We investigate the properties of the mixed-mode (RRd) RR Lyrae (RRL) variables in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy by using $B$- and $V$-band time series collected over twenty-four years. We compare the properties of the RRds in Fornax with those in the Magellanic Clouds and in nearby dSphs, with special focus on Sculptor. We found that the ratio of RRds over the total number of RRLs decreases with metallicity. Typically, dSphs have very few RRds with 0.49$\ltsim P_0 \ltsim $0.53 days, but Fornax fills this period gap in the Petersen diagram (ratio between first overtone over fundamental period versus fundamental period). We also found that the distribution in the Petersen diagram of Fornax RRds is similar to SMC RRds, thus suggesting that their old stars have a similar metallicity distribution. We introduce the Period-Amplitude RatioS (PARS) diagram, a new pulsation diagnostics independent of distance and reddening. We found that LMC RRds in this plane are distributed along a short- and a long-period sequence that we identified as the metal-rich and the metal-poor component. These two groups are also clearly separated in the Petersen and Bailey (luminosity amplitude versus logarithmic period) diagrams. These circumstantial evidence indicates that the two groups have different evolutionary properties. All the pulsation diagnostics adopted in this investigation suggest that old stellar populations in Fornax and Sculptor dSphs underwent different chemical enrichment histories. We present accurate and deep multi-band ($g,r,i$) photometry of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. The images were collected with wide field cameras at 2m/4m- (INT,CTIO,CFHT) and 8m-class telescopes (SUBARU) covering a 2 square degrees FoV across the center of the galaxy. We performed PSF photometry of $\approx$7,000 CCD images and the final catalog includes more than 1 million objects. We developed a new approach to identify candidate field and galaxy stars, and performed a new estimate of the galaxy center by using old stellar tracers finding that it differs by 1.15 (RA) and 1.53 (DEC) arcmin from previous estimates. We also found that young (Main Sequence, Red Supergiants), intermediate (Red Clump, Asymptotic Giant Branch [AGB]) and old (Red Giant Branch [RGB]) stars display different radial distributions. Old stellar population is spherically distributed and extends to radial distances larger than previously estimated ($\sim$1 degree). The young population shows a well defined bar and a disk-like distribution, as suggested by radio measurements, that is off-center compared with old population. We discuss pros and cons of the different diagnostics adopted to identify AGB stars and develop new ones based on optical-NIR-MIR color-color diagrams (CCDs) to characterize Oxygen and Carbon (C) rich stars. We found a mean population ratio between Carbon and M-type (C/M) stars of 0.67$\pm$0.08 (optical/NIR/MIR) and we used the observed C/M ratio with empirical C/M-metallicity relations to estimate a mean iron abundance of [Fe/H]$\sim$-1.25 ($\sigma$=0.04 dex) that agrees quite well with literature estimates., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 34 pages, 22 figures, 6 tables

Classical Cepheids are the most popular distance indicators and tracers of young stellar populations. The key advantage is that they are bright and they can be easily identified in Local Group and Local Volume galaxies. Their evolutionary and pulsation properties depend on their chemical abundances. The main aim of this investigation is to perform a new and accurate abundance analysis of two tens of calibrating Galactic Cepheids using high spectral resolution (R$\sim$40,000-115,000) and high S/N spectra ($\sim$400) covering the entire pulsation cycle. We focus our attention on possible systematics affecting the estimate of atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances along the pulsation cycle. We cleaned the line list by using atomic transition parameters based on laboratory measurements and by removing lines that are either blended or display abundance variations along the pulsation cycle. The spectroscopic approach that we developed brings forward small dispersions in the variation of the atmospheric parameters ($\sigma$($T_{\rm eff}$)$\sim$50 K, $\sigma$($\log{g}$)$\sim$0.2 dex, and $\sigma$($\xi$)$\sim$0.2 km/s) and in the abundance of both iron ($\lesssim$ 0.05 dex) and alpha elements ($\lesssim$0.10 dex) over the entire pulsation cycle. We also provide new and accurate effective temperature templates by splitting the calibrating Cepheids into four different period bins, ranging from short to long periods. For each period bin, we performed an analytical fit with Fourier series providing $\theta = 5040/{T_{\rm eff}}$ as a function of the pulsation phase. We report the discovery of high velocity candidates among RR~Lyrae stars found in the Milky Way halo. We identified 9 RR~Lyrae stars with Galactocentric velocities exceeding the local escape velocity based on the assumed Galaxy potential. Based on close examination of their orbits', we ruled out their ejection location in the Milky Way disk and bulge. The spatial distribution revealed that seven out of 9 pulsators overlap with the position of the Sagittarius stellar stream. Two out of these seven RR~Lyrae stars can be tentatively linked to the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy on the basis of their orbits. Focusing on the high-velocity tail of the RR~Lyrae velocity distribution we estimate the escape velocity in the Solar neighborhood to be $v_{\rm esc}=512^{+94}_{-37}$\,km\,s$^{-1}$~($4$ to $12$\,kpc), and beyond the Solar neighborhood as $v_{\rm esc}=436^{+44}_{-22}$\,km\,s$^{-1}$~and $v_{\rm esc}=393^{+53}_{-26}$\,km\,s$^{-1}$~(for distances between $12$ to $20$\,kpc and $20$ to $28$\,kpc), respectively. We utilized three escape velocity estimates together with the local circular velocity to estimate the Milky Way mass. The resulting measurement $M_{\rm 200}=0.83^{+0.29}_{-0.16} \cdot 10^{12}$\,M$_{\odot}$ falls on the lower end of the current Milky Way mass estimates, but once corrected for the likely bias in the escape velocity (approximately $10$ percent increase of the escape velocity), our mass estimate yields $M_{\rm 200}=1.26^{+0.40}_{-0.22} \cdot 10^{12}$\,M$_{\odot}$, which is in agreement with estimates based on different diagnostics of the Milky Way mass. The MW mass within $20$\,kpc then corresponds to $M_{\rm MW} \left(r < 20\,\text{kpc} \right)=1.9^{+0.2}_{-0.1} \times 10^{11}$\,M$_{\odot}$ without correction for bias, and $M_{\rm MW} \left(r < 20\,\text{kpc} \right)=2.1^{+0.2}_{-0.1} \times 10^{11}$\,M$_{\odot}$ corrected for a likely offset in escape velocities., Accepted for publication in A&A

We present FORS2@VLT follow-up photometry of YMCA-1, a recently discovered stellar system located 13\degr~from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) center. The deep color-magnitude diagram (CMD) reveals a well-defined main sequence (MS) and a handful of stars in the post-MS evolutionary phases. We analyse the YMCA-1 CMD by means of the automated isochrone matching package {\tt ASteCA} and model its radial density profile with a Plummer function. We find that YMCA-1 is an old ($11.7^{+1.7}_{-1.3}$~Gyr), metal-intermediate ([Fe/H] $\simeq -1.12^{+0.21}_{-0.13}$~dex), compact (r$_{\rm h} = 3.5 \pm 0.5$ pc), low-mass (M $= 10^{2.45 \pm 0.02} M_{\odot}$) and low-luminosity (M$_V = -0.47 \pm 0.57$~mag) stellar system. The estimated distance modulus ($\mu_0 = 18.72^{+0.15}_{-0.17}$~mag), corresponding to about 55~kpc, suggests that YMCA-1 is associated to the LMC, but we cannot discard the scenario in which it is a Milky Way satellite. The structural parameters of YMCA-1 are remarkably different compared with those of the 15 known old LMC globular clusters. In particular, it resides in a transition region of the M$_V$-r$_h$ plane, in between the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies and the classical old clusters, and close to SMASH-1, another faint stellar system recently discovered in the LMC surroundings., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present new period-$ϕ_{31}$-[Fe/H] relations for first overtone RRL stars (RRc), calibrated over a broad range of metallicities ($-2.5 < \textrm{[Fe/H]}< 0.0$) utilizing the largest currently available set of Galactic halo field RRL with homogeneous spectroscopic metallicities. Our relations are defined in the optical (ASAS-SN $V$-band) and, inaugurally, in the infrared (WISE $W1$ and $W2$ bands). Our $V$-band relation can reproduce individual RRc spectroscopic metallicities with a dispersion of 0.30 dex over the entire metallicity range of our calibrator sample (an RMS smaller than what we found for other relations in literature including non-linear terms). Our infrared relation has a similar dispersion in the low and intermediate metallicity range ($\textrm{[Fe/H]} < -0.5$) but tends to underestimate the [Fe/H] abundance around solar metallicity. We tested our relations by measuring both the metallicity of the Sculptor dSph and a sample of Galactic globular clusters, rich in both RRc and RRab stars. The average metallicity we obtain for the combined RRL sample in each cluster is within $\pm 0.08$ dex of their spectroscopic metallicities. The infrared and optical relations presented in this work will enable deriving reliable photometric RRL metallicities in conditions where spectroscopic measurements are not feasible; e.g., in distant galaxies or reddened regions (observed with upcoming Extremely Large Telescopes and the James Webb Space Telescope), or in the large sample of new RRL that will be discovered in large-area time-domain photometric surveys (such as LSST and the Roman space telescope)., Accepted by ApJ, 22 pages, 9 Figures, 3 Tables

We present our analysis of a large sample (over 150k) of candidate Galactic RR Lyrae (RRL) stars for which we derived high quality photometry at UV, optical and infrared wavelengths, using data from publicly available surveys. For a sub-sample of these stars (~2,400 fundamental mode field RRLs) we have measured their individual metallicity using the Delta S method, resulting in the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic data set collected for RRLs. We use this sample to study the metallicity distribution in the Galactic Halo, including the long-standing problem of the Oosterhoff dichotomy among Galactic globular clusters. We provide the largest and most homogeneous sample of $��$-element (Mg, Ca, Ti) and iron abundances for field RR Lyrae (RRLs, 162 variables) by using high-resolution spectra. The current measurements were complemented with similar abundances available in the literature for 46 field RRLs brought to our metallicity scale. We ended up with a sample of old (t$\ge$ 10 Gyr), low-mass stellar tracers (208 RRLs: 169 fundamental, 38 first overtone, 1 mixed mode) covering three dex in iron abundance (-3.00$\le$[Fe/H]$\le$0.24). We found that field RRLs are $\sim$0.3 dex more $��$-poor than typical Halo tracers in the metal-rich regime, ([Fe/H]$\ge$-1.2) while in the metal-poor regime ([Fe/H]$\le$-2.2) they seem to be on average $\sim$0.1 dex more $��$-enhanced. This is the first time that the depletion in $��$-elements for solar iron abundances is detected on the basis of a large, homogeneous and coeval sample of old stellar tracers. Interestingly, we also detected a close similarity in the [$��$/Fe] trend between $��$-poor, metal-rich RRLs and red giants (RGs) in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy as well as between $��$-enhanced, metal-poor RRLs and RGs in ultra faint dwarf galaxies. These results are supported by similar elemental abundances for 46 field Horizontal Branch (HB) stars. These stars share with RRLs the same evolutionary phase and the same progenitors. This evidence further supports the key role that old stellar tracers play in constraining the early chemical enrichment of the Halo and, in particular, in investigating the impact that dwarf galaxies have had in the mass assembly of the Galaxy.

We developed a new approach to provide accurate estimates of metal content, reddening and true distance modulus of RR Lyrae stars (RRLs). The method is based on homogeneous optical ($BVI$) and near-infrared ($JHK$) mean magnitudes and on predicted period--luminosity--metallicity relations ($IJHK$) and absolute mean magnitude--metallicity relations ($BV$). We obtained solutions for three different RRL samples in $��$ Cen: first overtone (RRc,~90), fundamental (RRab,~80) and global (RRc+RRab) in which the period of first overtones were fundamentalized. The metallicity distribution shows a well defined peak at [Fe/H]$\sim$--1.98 and a standard deviation of $��$=0.54 dex. The spread is, as expected, metal-poor ([Fe/H]$\le$--2.3) objects. The current metallicity distribution is $\sim$0.3 dex more metal-poor than similar estimates for RRLs available in the literature. The difference vanishes if the true distance modulus we estimated is offset by --0.06/--0.07~mag in true distance modulus. We also found a cluster true distance modulus of $��$=13.720$\pm$0.002$\pm$0.030~mag, where the former error is the error on the mean and the latter is the standard deviation. Moreover, we found a cluster reddening of E($B-V$)=0.132$\pm$0.002$\pm$0.028~mag and spatial variations of the order of a few arcmin across the body of the cluster. Both the true distance modulus and the reddening are slightly larger than similar estimates available in the literature, but the difference is within 1$��$. The metallicity dependence of distance diagnostics agree with theory and observations, but firm constraints require accurate and homogeneous spectroscopic measurements.

New accurate and homogeneous optical UBVRI photometry has been obtained for variable stars in the Galactic globular $��$ Cen (NGC 5139). We secured 8202 CCD images covering a time interval of 24 years and a sky area of 84x48 arcmin. The current data were complemented with data available in the literature and provided new, homogeneous pulsation parameters (mean magnitudes, luminosity amplitudes,periods) for 187 candidate $��$ Cen RR Lyrae (RRLs). Among them we have 101 RRc (first overtone), 85 RRab (fundamental) and a single candidate RRd (double-mode) variables. Candidate Blazhko RRLs show periods and colors that are intermediate between RRc and RRab variables, suggesting that they are transitional objects. The comparison of the period distribution and of the Bailey diagram indicates that RRLs in $��$ Cen show a long-period tail not present in typical Oosterhoff II (OoII) globulars. The RRLs in dwarf spheroidals and in ultra faint dwarfs have properties between Oosterhoff intermediate and OoII clusters. Metallicity plays a key role in shaping the above evidence. These findings do not support the hypothesis that $��$ Cen is the core remnant of a spoiled dwarf galaxy. Using optical Period-Wesenheit relations that are reddening-free and minimally dependent on metallicity we find a mean distance to $��$ Cen of 13.71$\pm$0.08$\pm$0.01 mag (semi-empirical and theoretical calibrations). Finally, we invert the I-band Period-Luminosity-Metallicity relation to estimate individual RRLs metal abundances. We have performed a new abundance analysis of Carina Red Giant (RG) stars from spectroscopic data collected with UVES (high resolution) and FLAMES/GIRAFFE (high and medium resolution) at ESO/VLT. The former sample includes 44 RGs, while the latter consists of 65 (high) and ~800 (medium resolution) RGs, covering a significant fraction of the galaxy's RG branch (RGB), and red clump stars. To improve the abundance analysis at the faint magnitude limit, the FLAMES/GIRAFFE data were divided into ten surface gravity and effective temperature bins. The spectra of the stars belonging to the same gravity/temperature bin were stacked. This approach allowed us to increase by at least a factor of five the signal-to-noise ratio in the faint limit (V>20.5mag). We took advantage of the new photometry index cU,B,I introduced by Monelli et al. (2014), as an age and probably a metallicity indicator, to split stars along the RGB. These two stellar populations display distinct [Fe/H] and [Mg/H] distributions: their mean Fe abundances are -2.15$\pm$0.06dex (sig=0.28), and -1.75$\pm$0.03dex (sig=0.21), respectively. The two iron distributions differ at the 75% level. This supports preliminary results by Lemasle et al. (2012) and by Monelli et al. (2014). Moreover, we found that the old and intermediate-age stellar populations have mean [Mg/H] abundances of -1.91$\pm$0.05dex (sig=0.22) and -1.35$\pm$0.03dex (sig=0.22); these differ at the 83% level. Carina's ��-element abundances agree, within 1sigma, with similar abundances for field Halo stars and for cluster (Galactic, Magellanic) stars. The same outcome applies to nearby dwarf spheroidals and ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, in the iron range covered by Carina stars. Finally, we found evidence of a clear correlation between Na and O abundances, thus suggesting that Carina's chemical enrichment history is quite different than in the globular clusters., 21 pages, 19 figures, 11 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present new and accurate optical photometry of the Bulge globular cluster NGC 6528. The images were collected with ACS at HST and together with WFC3 (UVIS, IR) allowed us to measure the proper motion to separate cluster and field stars. We adopted two empirical calibrators and we found that NGC 6528 is coeval with and more metal-rich than 47 Tuc. Moreover, it appears older and more metal-poor than the super-metal-rich old open cluster NGC 6791. We also performed a preliminary analysis of field stellar populations located around NGC 6528 and NGC 6522 by using ground-based near-infrared photometry collected with SOFI at NTT. The comparison of evolved stellar components (red giant branch, red horizontal branch, red clump stars) indicates that they share similar properties in this region of the Baade's Window., 7 pages, 2 figures. We present new and accurate near-infrared (NIR) J, K-band time series data for the Galactic globular cluster (GC) M5 = NGC5904. Data were collected with SOFI at the NTT (71 J + 120 K images) and with NICS at the TNG (25 J + 22 K images) and cover two orthogonal strips across the center of the cluster of \approx 5 \times 10 arcmin^{2} each. These data allowed us to derive accurate mean K-band magnitudes for 52 fundamental (RR_{ab}) and 24 first overtone (RR_{c}) RR Lyrae stars. Using this sample of RR Lyrae stars, we find that the slope of the K-band Period Luminosity (PLK) relation (-2.33 \pm 0.08) agrees quite well with similar estimates available in the literature. We also find, using both theoretical and empirical calibrations of the PLK relation, a true distance to M5 of (14.44 \pm 0.02) mag. This distance modulus agrees very well (1\sigma) with distances based on main sequence fitting method and on kinematic method (14.44 \pm 0.41 mag, \citealt{rees_1996}), while is systematically smaller than the distance based on the white dwarf cooling sequence (14.67 \pm 0.18 mag, \citealt{layden2005}), even if with a difference slightly larger than 1\sigma. The true distance modulus to M5 based on the PLJ relation (14.50 \pm 0.08 mag) is in quite good agreement with the distance based on the PLK relation further supporting the use of NIR PL relations for RR Lyrae stars to improve the precision of the GC distance scale., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present U,B,V,I photometry of the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy, based on more than 4,000 CCD images. Special attention was given to the photometric calibration, and the precision for the B,V,I bands is better than 0.01 mag. We compared in the V,B-V and V,B-I color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) Carina with three Globular Clusters (GCs, M53, M55, M79). We find that only the more metal-poor GCs (M55, [Fe/H]=-1.85; M53, [Fe/H]=-2.02 dex) provide a good match with the Carina giant branch. We performed a similar comparison in the V,V-I CMD with three SMC intermediate-age clusters (IACs, Kron3, NGC339, Lindsay38). We find that the color extent of the SGB of the two more metal-rich IACs (Kron3, [Fe/H]=-1.08; NGC339, [Fe/H]=-1.36 dex) is smaller than the range among Carina's intermediate-age stars. However, the ridge line of the more metal-poor IAC (Lindsay38, [Fe/H]=-1.59 dex) agrees quite well with the Carina intermediate-age stars. These findings indicate that Carina's old stellar population is metal-poor and seems to have a limited spread in metallicity (Delta [Fe/H]=0.2--0.3 dex). Carina intermediate-age stars can hardly be more metal-rich than Lindsay38 and its spread in metallicity appears modest. We also find that the synthetic CMD constructed assuming a metallicity spread of 0.5 dex for intermediate-age stars predicts evolutionary features not supported by observations. The above results are at odds with recent spectroscopic investigations suggesting that Carina stars cover a broad range in metallicity (Delta [Fe/H]~1--2 dex). We present a new method to estimate the metallicity of complex stellar systems using the difference in color between the red clump and the middle of the RR Lyrae instability strip. The observed colors of Carina's evolved stars indicate a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.70+-0.19 dex, which agrees quite well with spectroscopic measurements., Accepted on PASP, 12 pages, 6 figures

We report the possible discovery of a new stellar system (YMCA-1), identified during a search for small scale overdensities in the photometric data of the YMCA survey. The object's projected position lies on the periphery of the Large Magellanic Cloud about $13^\circ$ apart from its center. The most likely interpretation of its color-magnitude diagram, as well as of its integrated properties, is that YMCA-1 may be an old and remote star cluster of the Milky Way at a distance of 100 kpc from the Galactic center. If this scenario could be confirmed, then the cluster would be significantly fainter and more compact than most of the known star clusters residing in the extreme outskirts of the Galactic halo, but quite similar to Laevens~3. We collected a large data set of field RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) by using catalogues already available in the literature and Gaia DR2. We estimated the iron abundances for a sub-sample of 2,382 fundamental RRLs ($\Delta$S method: CaIIK, H$\beta$, H$\gamma$ and H$\delta$ lines) for which are publicly available medium-resolution SDSS-SEGUE spectra. We also included similar estimates available in the literature ending up with the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic data set ever collected for RRLs (2,903). The metallicity scale was validated by using iron abundances based on high resolution spectra for a fundamental field RRL (V~Ind), for which we collected X-shooter spectra covering the entire pulsation cycle. The peak ([Fe/H]=-1.59$\pm$0.01) and the standard deviation ($\sigma$=0.43 dex) of the metallicity distribution agree quite well with similar estimates available in the literature. The current measurements disclose a well defined metal-rich tail approaching Solar iron abundance. The spectroscopic sample plotted in the Bailey diagram (period vs luminosity amplitude) shows a steady variation when moving from the metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-3.0/-2.5) to the metal-rich ([Fe/H]=-0.5/0.0) regime. The smooth transition in the peak of the period distribution as a function of the metallicity strongly indicates that the long-standing problem of the Oosterhoff dichotomy among Galactic globulars is the consequence of the lack of metal-intermediate clusters hosting RRLs. We also found that the luminosity amplitude, in contrast with period, does not show a solid correlation with metallicity. We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of horizontal branch stars in the globular cluster NGC 3201. We collected optical (4580-5330 Å), high-resolution (∼34,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (∼200) spectra for 11 RR Lyrae stars and one red horizontal branch star with the multifiber spectrograph M2FS with the 6.5 m Magellan telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory. From measured equivalent widths, we derived atmospheric parameters and abundance ratios for α (Mg, Ca, and Ti), iron-peak (Sc, Cr, Ni, and Zn), and s-process (Y) elements. We found that NGC 3201 is a homogeneous, monometallic ([Fe/H] = -1.47 ± 0.04), α-enhanced ([α/Fe] = 0.37 ± 0.04) cluster. The relative abundances of the iron-peak and s-process elements were found to be consistent with solar values. In comparison with other large stellar samples, NGC 3201 RR Lyraes have similar chemical enrichment histories as do those of other old (t ≥ 10 Gyr) Halo components (globular clusters; red giants; blue and red horizontal branch stars; and RR Lyraes). We also provided a new average radial velocity estimate for NGC 3201 by using a template velocity curve to overcome the limit of single-epoch measurements of variable stars: Vrad = 494 ± 2 km s-1 (σ = 8 km s-1). We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of RR Lyrae (RRL) variables in the globular cluster NGC 5139 (ω Cen). We collected optical (4580–5330 Å), high-resolution (R ∼ 34,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (∼200) spectra for 113 RRLs with the multifiber spectrograph M2FS at the Magellan/Clay Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We also analyzed high-resolution (R ∼ 26,000) spectra for 122 RRLs collected with FLAMES/GIRAFFE at the Very Large Telescope, available in the ESO archive. The current sample doubles the literature abundances of cluster and field RRLs in the Milky Way based on high-resolution spectra. Equivalent-width measurements were used to estimate atmospheric parameters, iron, and abundance ratios for α (Mg, Ca, Ti), iron peak (Sc, Cr, Ni, Zn), and s-process (Y) elements. We confirm that ω Cen is a complex cluster, characterized by a large spread in the iron content: −2.58 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ −0.85. We estimated the average cluster abundance as , with σ = 0.33 dex. Our findings also suggest that two different RRL populations coexist in the cluster. The former is more metal-poor ([Fe/H] ≲ − 1.5), with almost solar abundance of Y. The latter is less numerous, more metal-rich, and yttrium enhanced ([Y/Fe] ≳ 0.4). This peculiar bimodal enrichment only shows up in the s-process element, and it is not observed among lighter elements, whose [X/Fe] ratios are typical for Galactic globular clusters.

We present an updated analysis of the M31 pixel lensing candidate event OAB-N2 previously reported in Calchi Novati et al. (2009). Here we take advantage of new data both astrometric and photometric. Astrometry: using archival 4m-KPNO and HST/WFPC2 data we perform a detailed analysis on the event source whose result, although not fully conclusive on the source magnitude determination, is confirmed by the following light curve photometry analysis. Photometry: first, unpublished WeCAPP data allows us to confirm OAB-N2, previously reported only as a viable candidate, as a well constrained pixel lensing event. Second, this photometry enables a detailed analysis in the event parameter space including the effects due to finite source size. The combined results of these analyses allow us to put a strong lower limit on the lens proper motion. This outcome favors the MACHO lensing hypothesis over self lensing for this individual event and points the way toward distinguishing between the MACHO and self-lensing hypotheses from larger data sets., Accepted for publication in ApJ - minor changes to match the accepted version - Figure 1 updated

The Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) is an optical wide-field imaging survey carried out with the VLT Survey Telescope and the OmegaCAM camera. KiDS will image 1500 square degrees in four filters (ugri), and together with its near-infrared counterpart VIKING will produce deep photometry in nine bands. Designed for weak lensing shape and photometric redshift measurements, the core science driver of the survey is mapping the large-scale matter distribution in the Universe back to a redshift of ~0.5. Secondary science cases are manifold, covering topics such as galaxy evolution, Milky Way structure, and the detection of high-redshift clusters and quasars. KiDS is an ESO Public Survey and dedicated to serving the astronomical community with high-quality data products derived from the survey data, as well as with calibration data. Public data releases will be made on a yearly basis, the first two of which are presented here. For a total of 148 survey tiles (~160 sq.deg.) astrometrically and photometrically calibrated, coadded ugri images have been released, accompanied by weight maps, masks, source lists, and a multi-band source catalog. A dedicated pipeline and data management system based on the Astro-WISE software system, combined with newly developed masking and source classification software, is used for the data production of the data products described here. The achieved data quality and early science projects based on the data products in the first two data releases are reviewed in order to validate the survey data. Early scientific results include the detection of nine high-z QSOs, fifteen candidate strong gravitational lenses, high-quality photometric redshifts and galaxy structural parameters for hundreds of thousands of galaxies. The Shapley Supercluster Survey is a multi-wavelength survey covering an area of ~23 deg^2 (~260 Mpc^2 at z=0.048) around the supercluster core, including nine Abell and two poor clusters, having redshifts in the range 0.045-0.050. The survey aims to investigate the role of the cluster-scale mass assembly on the evolution of galaxies, mapping the effects of the environment from the cores of the clusters to their outskirts and along the filaments. The optical (ugri) imaging acquired with OmegaCAM on the VLT Survey Telescope is essential to achieve the project goals providing accurate multi-band photometry for the galaxy population down to m*+6. We describe the methodology adopted to construct the optical catalogues and to separate extended and point-like sources. The catalogues reach average 5sigma limiting magnitudes within a 3\arcsec diameter aperture of ugri=[24.4,24.6,24.1,23.3] and are 93% complete down to ugri=[23.8,23.8,23.5,22.0] mag, corresponding to ~m*_r+8.5. The data are highly uniform in terms of observing conditions and all acquired with seeing less than 1.1 arcsec full width at half-maximum. The median seeing in r-band is 0.6 arcsec, corresponding to 0.56 kpc h^{-1}_{70} at z=0.048. While the observations in the u, g and r bands are still ongoing, the i-band observations have been completed, and we present the i-band catalogue over the whole survey area. The latter is released and it will be regularly updated, through the use of the Virtual Observatory tools. This includes 734,319 sources down to i=22.0 mag and it is the first optical homogeneous catalogue at such a depth, covering the central region of the Shapley supercluster., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 7 tables.
