Objective: The present study deals with the Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of one ayurvedic Rasayana formulation, “Brahma Rasayanam,” which is a health rejuvenating tonic prescribed in Ayurveda. Materials and Methods: Brahma Rasayanam was procured from ayurvedic vendor at Chennai and subjected to GC-MS procedure by following standard protocol. Results: The GC-MS profile indicated the presence of some very important biomolecules such as 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural, 2H-Pyran-2-one, tetrahydro-6-nonyl-, n-hexadecanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid, and n-decanoic acid. Conclusion: The medicinal roles of the molecules represent that of Brahma Rasayanam itself, further work to standardize the medicine is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The present study deals with three antioxidant assays for one Ayurvedic medicine, Mahanarayana Thailam which is used to treat diseases such as arthritis, paralysis, facial palsy, hearing loss, tremors, wasting of muscles, insanity, oligospermia, female infertility, headache, psychosis, humpback, and eye diseases. Materials and Methods: 2,2’-azino-bis-3- ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP), and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays were conducted following standard protocols. Results: Mahanarayana Thailam showed very good antioxidant potential at very low concentrations in FRAP assay as compared to ABTS and DPPH assays. Conclusion: These results clearly indicate the medicinal efficacy of Mahanarayana Thailam as a very good antioxidant formula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The present study deals with the three antioxidant assays, namely, 2, 2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) by standard protocols for one Ayurvedic medicine, Drakshadi Kashayam which is used to cure a number of ailments. Materials and Methods: Drakshadi Kashayam was procured from standard Ayurvedic vendor at Chennai, India, and was subjected to GC-MS analysis following standard protocol. Results: It was observed that among the three assays, Drakshadi Kashayam indicated excellent results at very low concentrations in FRAP assay as compared to ABTS and DPPH assays which indicated moderate antioxidant activities of the medicine. Materials and Methods: Ashtachurnam was procured from standard Ayurvedic vendor from Chennai and was subjected to GC-MS analysis following standard procedure. Results: Some important biomolecules such as cycloheximide, piperine, 1-heptatriacotanol., beta.-sitosterol, Thymol, and n-decanoic acid with medicinal values were found in the GC-MS profile. Objective: The study envisages finding the molecules present in one Ayurvedic medicine, Avipathi churnam, which is prescribed to treat digestive disorders by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Materials and Methods: Avipathi churnam was procured from standard Ayurvedic medicine vendor at Chennai, India, and was subjected to GC-MS analysis following standard procedures. Results: The GC-MS profile shows the presence of some important biomolecules of medicinal importance such as cis-5,8,11-Eicosatrienoic acid, methyl ester, 6,6-Dimethyl-2-(2-methyl-allyl)-1,6-dihydropyrimidine4-Carbonitrile, 3-Cyclohexene-1-methanol., alpha., alpha., 4-trimethyl-, acetate, 2(1H)-Isoquinolinecarboximidamide, 3,4-dihydro-., beta.-ylangene, Caryophyllene oxide, 7-Methyl-Z-tetradecen-1-ol acetate, 12-Hydroxy-14-methyl-oxacyclotetradec-6-en-2-one., beta.-sitosterol, 9, 19-Cyclolanost-24-en-3-ol, acetate, (3.beta.)-, Ursodeoxycholic acid, Butyl 9.cis., and 11.trans.-octadecadienoate which augur well with the medicinal properties of Avipathi churnam. Methods: Lohasava was bought from a standard Ayurvedic vendor at Chennai and subjected to GC–MS analysis by standard procedures. The medicinal roles of the biomolecules indicated in the GC–MS profile were screened for their various medicinal roles using Dr. Duke’s phytochemical and ethno-botanical data and other data. Results: The GC–MS profile of Lohasava indicated the presence of important biomolecules such as butanoic acid, 3-hydroxy-, ethyl ester, phenylethyl alcohol, ethyl hydrogen succinate, thymol, 4-hydroxy-2-methylacetophenone, hydrocinnamic acid, 2,6-dimethoxyphenyl-beta-phenylpropionate, bisphenol C, benzeneethanamine, 2,5-dimethoxy-alpha.,4-dimethyl-and piperine. Conclusions: It is concluded that Lohasava does have a scientific efficacy toward its claimed role as a medicine in Ayurveda. Methods: Drakshadi Kashayam was bought from a standard Ayurvedic vendor at Chennai and subjected to GC–MS analysis by standard procedures. The medicinal roles of the biomolecules indicated in the GC–MS profile were screened for their various medicinal roles using Dr. Duke’s phytochemical and ethnobotanical data and other data. Results: GC–MS profile of Drakshadi Kashayam indicated the presence of important biomolecules such as carbonic acid, pentyl phenyl ester, bisphenol C, histamine, N-benzoyl-2-cyano-, o-Methoxy-.alpha.-phenethylamine, benzenethanamine, 3,4-dimethoxy-.alpha.-methyl-, cis-Z-.alpha.-Bisabolene epoxide, and 1,3-Dimethoxy-5-(1-methyl-heptyl)-benzene which have medicinal roles supporting the efficacy of Drakshadi Kashayam as a liver tonic. Conclusions: It is concluded that Drakshadi Kashayam, which is an important Ayurvedic medicine, does contain some very important molecules showing its efficacy. The medicinal roles of the biomolecules indicated in the GC-MS profile were screened for their various medicinal roles using Dr. Duke’s Phytochemical and ethnobotanical data and other data. Results: GC-MS profile of Kutajarishtam indicated the presence of important biomolecules such aso-Acetyl-L-serine, 4H-Pyran-4-one, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-, 2-Furanethanol., beta.-ethoxy-, Acetic acid, 1-(2-hydroxy-1-methyl-ethyl)-3-methoxymethoxy-2-methyl-propyl ester and Cyclohexan-1,4,5-triol-3-one-1-carboxylic acid which have medicinal roles which correlated well with that of Kutajarishtam. Conclusions: It is concluded that Kutajarishtam, which is an important Ayurvedic medicine, contains some very important molecules showing its efficacy. The present study aims at knowing the presence of biomolecules present in one Ayurvedic medicine, Madhukasavam, by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis. Materials and Methods: Madhukasavam was procured from a standard Ayurvedic medicine vendor ant Chennai and was subjected to GC–MS analysis by standard procedure. Results: Important biomolecules such as phenyl-beta-D-glucoside, eucalyptol.,alpha-methyl 4-O-methyl-D-mannoside, pentanoic acid, 2-ethylhexyl ester, phenylethyl alcohol, L-alpha-terpineol, 2-furanethanol., beta-ethoxy-, Quinolin-2-ol, 6-methoxy-4-methyl-, 3-(3,3-Dimethyloxiran-2-yl)-2,2-dimethylpropionic acid, ethyl ester, decane, 5-ethyl-5-methyl-, (1Ar-(1aalpha,4abeta,8as(*)))-4a,8,8-trimethyloctahydrobenzo(c)cyclopropa(d)pyran-2,4-dione, n-hexadecanoic acid, trans-geranylgeraniol, and N,N-dimethyl-4-nitroso-3-(trimethylsilyl)aniline were shown in the GC–MS profile, which have far-reaching medicinal roles.
