Research has been conducted on the bacterial strains resisting and reducing selenite and tellurite concentrations. The isolation, characterization and enumeration of the physiological properties of these strains have been carried out and the details are reported.

Research has been conducted on methanotrops. The authors have investigated the presence of the diverse pmoA genes in methanotrops' genotypic trait, and have described the development of PCR hybridization probes and primers for the detection of pmoA-like genes in methane-oxidizing genospecies.

The authors have investigated chlorate reduction in this bacterium, and they describe the isolation and characterization of chlorate reductase from I. dechloratans, and the sequences for the genes encoding chlorate reductase.

The authors have investigated Aureococcus anophagefferens causing algal blooms in estuaries on the Mid-Atlantic United States. They discuss the improved method developed for immunodetection of A. anophagefferens which includes the application of monoclonal-antibody technique allowing high reactivity with the target species but low cross-reactivity with other bacteria species.

Research has been conducted on culturable bacterial lineages from the coastal North Sea picoplankton. The growth of these leneages has been studied under various incubation conditions, and the results suggest that bacteria affiliated with frequently isolated genera such as Vibrio and Alteromonas are rare in this picoplankton due to the counterballance between their rapid growth response to changing environmental conditions and higher grazing mortality.

Research has been conducted on methyl tert-butyl ether-contaminated groundwater. The authors report the discovery of bacterial strain discovered in this groundwater which is identical to the native strain PM1, degrading methyl tert-butyl ether, in its ribosomal 16S DNA sequence.

Research has been conducted on wine bacterium Oenococcus oeni which has to cope with such environmental conditions as nonoptimal growth temperatures, acidic pH and high alcoholic content. The authors describe the cloning and characterization of O. oeni ftsH gene encoding ATP binding cassette protein superfamily protease, and suggest that this gene is a well-conserved stress-protective molecular device.

Research has been conducted on bacterial strains which use organophosphate pesticides as a carbon source. The authors report that the strains of these bacteria isolated from different geographical regions have a gene linked to opd plasmids which is involved in p-nitrophenol degradation.

The authors report that the addition of L-valine to glucose minimal medium has not affected the growth of this bacterium but has inhibited the growth of derived valine strain VAL1 due to the increased level of ilvB protein product caused by valine.
