Battery energy storage systems can be integrated with photovoltaic (PV)-diesel microgrids as an enabling technology to increase the penetration of PV systems and aid microgrid stability by smoothing out the power fluctuations of the PV systems. This paper focuses on this topic and aims to derive correlations between the optimal capacity of the smoothing batteries and variabilities in the daily solar irradiance. To this end, the two most commonly used moving average and ramp rate control techniques are employed on a real solar irradiance dataset with a 1-min resolution for a full calendar year across 11 sites in Australia. The paper then presents the developed empirical model, based on linear regressions, to estimate the batteries' optimal capacity without requiring detailed simulation studies, which are useful for practitioners at the early stages of a project's feasibility evaluation. The performance of the developed technique is validated through numerical simulation studies in MATLAB®. The study demonstrates that the empirical model provided reasonably accurate estimates when using the moving average smoothing technique but had limited accuracy under the ramp rate control technique. Many countries have started their transition to a net-zero economy. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) play an ever-increasing role towards this transition as a rechargeable energy storage medium. Initially, LIBs were developed for consumer electronics and portable devices but have seen dramatic growth in their use in electric vehicles (EVs) and via the gradual uptake in battery energy storage systems (BESSs) over the last decade. As such, critical metals (Li, Co, Ni, and Mn) and chemicals (polymers, electrolytes, Cu, Al, PVDF, LiPF6, LiBF4, and graphite) needed for LIBs are currently in great demand and are susceptible to global supply shortages. Dramatic increases in raw material prices, coupled with predicted exponential growth in global demand (e.g., United States graphite demand from 2022 7000 t to ~145,000 t), means that LIBs will not be sustainable if only sourced from raw materials. LIBs degrade over time. When their performance can no longer meet the requirement of their intended application (e.g., EVs in the 8–12 year range), opportunities exist to extract and recover battery materials for re-use in new batteries or to supply other industrial chemical sectors. With the advancements of the battery energy storage systems (BESSs), reduction of their manufacturing costs and government subsidies, the BESS uptake is likely to increase rapidly in power distribution networks. This paper investigates the effects of residential BESSs on low-voltage (LV) networks using the actual household load profiles equipped with BESS and solar-photovoltaic (PV) systems. The electricity consumption data collected via smart meters (2200 households with PV/BESS, 1950 households with PV only and 1000 households without a PV or a BESS) at different solar-PV penetration levels and network types are used to simulate real network operating scenarios. A real LV distribution network in Australia is analysed in DIgSILENT PowerFactory under different scenarios, such as, customers with and without a solar-PV/BESS, with a solar-PV but without a BESS, and without a solar-PV, by using both the power flow and quasi-dynamic simulation studies under balanced and the unbalanced network loading conditions. According to the study, customers experience large voltage excursions from solar-PV power exports, which could be resolved by the household BESS, provided that the BESS charging is coordinated with the solar-PV production. Moreover, quasi-dynamic simulation shows that the BESS could reduce the violation of the over-voltage limit during the solar peak hours (midday) by lowering the worst-case feeder voltage by 3%. Finally, extreme-event (high solar PV generation scenario) simulation shows that the implementation of the BESS controller to facilitate charging BESS during afternoon solar-PV export may reduce the negative grid impact and will assist to avoid network upgrades. This paper provides models for managing and investigating the power flow of a grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) system with an energy storage system (ESS) supplying the residential load. This paper presents a combination of models in forecasting solar PV power, forecasting load power, and determining battery capacity of the ESS, to improve the overall quality of the power flow management of a grid-connected solar PV system. Big data tools were used to formulate the solar PV power forecasting model and load power forecasting model, in which real historical solar electricity data of actual solar homes in Australia were used to improve the quality of the forecasting models. In addition, the time-of-use electricity pricing was also considered in managing the power flow, to provide the minimum cost of electricity from the grid to the residential load. The output of this model presents the power flow profiles, including the solar PV power, battery power, grid power, and load power of weekend and weekday in a summer season. The battery state-of-charge of the ESS was also presented. Therefore, this model may help power system engineers to investigate the power flow of each system of a grid-connected solar PV system and help in the management decision for the improvement of the overall quality of the power management of the system. Deploying the cloud energy storage system (CESS) is an economic and efficient way to store excess photovoltaic generation and participate in demand response without personal investment on pricy energy storage equipment. It is a shared battery energy storage system (BESS) for local residential and small commercial consumers, which is designed and controlled by the CESS operator. Based on the profit purpose, the CESS operator not only pursues the most economic operating strategy, but also tries to minimize the total investment on the design stage. This paper considers the investment on the batteries, power conversion system, reactive power compensation equipment and the cost including battery degradation cost and operation cost. The electricity price uncertainty and the voltage deviation of the CESS node caused by power exchange are also considered. Moreover, the cases of a largely centralized energy storage system and multiple distributed energy storage systems are all modelled. Finally, an original robust cooptimization model is transferred to a mixed integer linear programming model (MILP) and solved in GAMS. Summary: With the increasing popularity of combining residential photovoltaic systems with battery storages, research, industry, and customers look for ways to determine if such an investment is economically profitable. Simulation programs may serve to predict the profitability and lifetime of the system. In this paper, we use techno‐economic analysis with a specific account of battery degradation to determine profitability and lifetime of a residential photovoltaic (PV) battery system under different energy management and tariff regimes. This work presents two case studies: the first being a techno‐economic comparison for a residential PV‐battery system in New South Wales, Australia and Germany, and the second analyzing the profitability and degradation impact of three different operation strategies for a battery storage in Australia. The results reveal that site‐specific conditions (i.e., geographical and energy‐economic constraints) may have a significant impact on the ideal system configuration and ultimately the anticipated battery lifetime. Furthermore, statistical analysis of different storage operation strategies applied to various prosumer load and generation profiles reveals the effects of storage dispatch strategies on battery aging. Over the last decade, the electricity sector has seen a significant increase in the number of residential battery systems, as well as increasing interest in using them to reduce demand during network peaks. Although there is an abundance of literature assessing this ability using modelled residential batteries, there is a lack of detailed assessment using deployed residential batteries. This paper analyses 1-min resolution data from 15 non-coordinated residential batteries deployed in Australia across 6 network peak demand periods. A novel metric was used to quantify errors in BESS load-following, which occurred when the batteries did not completely mitigate grid import and export even when they had sufficient energy capacity and rated power. On average the 15 batteries discharged around 25% of their rated power during network demand peaks, whereas those that load-followed discharged around 40%. Despite the small sample size, these results suggest that the outcomes from modelled batteries represent the ideal upper bound and the actual performance of some batteries is likely to be lower. This paper investigates a comparative study for practical optimal sizing of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) for grid-connected houses (GCHs) by considering flat and time-of-use (TOU) electricity rate options. Two system configurations, PV only and PV-BESS, were optimally sized by minimizing the net present cost of electricity for four options of electricity rates. A practical model was developed by considering grid constraints, daily supply of charge of electricity, salvation value and degradation of PV and BESS, actual annual data of load and solar, and current market price of components. A rule-based energy management system was examined for GCHs to control the power flow among PV, BESS, load, and grid. Various sensitivity analyses are presented to examine the impacts of grid constraint and electricity rates on the cost of electricity and the sizes of the components. Although the capacity optimization model is generally developed for any case study, a grid-connected house in Australia is considered as the case system in this paper. It is found that the TOU-Flat option for the PV-BESS configuration achieved the lowest NPC compared to other configuration and options. The optimal capacities of rooftop PV and BESS were obtained as 9 kW and 6 kWh, respectively, for the PV-BESS configuration with TOU-Flat according to two performance metrices: net present cost and cost of electricity. Although noteworthy efforts towards energy storage participation in electricity markets have been witnessed worldwide during the last decades, market mechanisms for optimal storage integration are yet to be comprehensively studied. This paper presents a novel approach wherein a multi-period look-ahead market is proposed to progressively solve the optimisation problem over a receding horizon, incorporating intertemporal constraints to enable forward planning. The focus is specifically on modelling the bidding behaviour of energy storage, and to address this, we develop two distinct models for the participation of energy storage in the market. The integrated model aims to schedule the future dispatch of the storage to minimise total operational cost, taking into account the fixed costs of the storage, while the strategic model pursues the dual ambition to maximise storage profit by formulating a bilevel optimisation problem. We validate the viability of our proposed market mechanisms through case studies on the Australian National Electricity Market. We conduct case studies which provide evidence that both the strategic and integrated bidding models effectively address the requirement for forward planning, resulting in reduced market costs and volatility. The increased uptake of variable renewable energy sources has increased electricity price volatility in many energy pool markets, providing an opportunity for storage systems to profit through energy arbitrage. Comparison between the cost or value of storage systems engaging in energy arbitrage should be performed on a levelised basis due to differences in system lifetime. Existing energy arbitrage models with bid/offer curves and imperfect forecasting are typically computationally expensive and are impractical for calculating lifetime levelised cost metrics. In this work, an open-source modular energy arbitrage model with bid and offer curve inputs was developed for a lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) and pumped hydro system (PHS) to analyse lifetime levelised cost and revenue. The mixed integer linear program scheduling module included a new piece-wise linearised description of PHS charging behaviour for rapid optimisation. A one-at-a-time sensitivity analysis indicated that levelised cost and revenue were highly sensitive to discharging efficiency. In a case study based on Australia's National Electricity Market, imperfect forecasting with no risk hedging was found to increase levelised costs by up to 24% and decrease levelised revenue by up to 50% relative to perfect price forecasting, despite 95% of prices being forecast to be within $35/MWh of the actual trading price. BESS levelised costs were more significantly correlated with consistent low risk bids (Kendall Tau-b of 0.75), since the undiscounted capital costs contribute to a larger proportion of the overall costs than in the PHS systems. This paper proposes a multifunctional control strategy for battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in solar photovoltaic (PV) plants to avoid the unacceptable PV-power ramp-rate caused by PV variability. In addition to the PV variability tolerant ramp-rate control, the proposed multifunctional BESS control strategy is capable of maintaining a user-specified charging profile to store excess PV power while providing backup power support and charge maintenance, by accommodating diverse control functions time to time. Four control functions, namely, Rest (RST), Surplus Energy Storage (STR), Back-up Power Support (SPT) and Charge Maintenance (CMT) functions, are proposed in this article. Besides, extendibility of the proposed multifunctional strategy is presented by adding two action strategies – one with the STR function and another with the SPT function. Validation of the proposed control strategy is conducted by using real historical data from a utility-scale solar PV plant located in Queensland, Australia. Numerical analyses show that the strategy can successfully keep the PV ramp-rate within specified limit along with the user specified charge profile. Further, exploiting the real-field data, the proposed strategy is demonstrated through a real-time co-simulation study conducted in a MATLAB interfaced RSCAD-RTDS platform that can be used as Digital Twin (DT) for the PV plant. Curtailment of distributed photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems will have significant implications for power system transition around the world. Australia offers a unique case study as it has highest installation rate of distributed-PV and growing fleet of battery energy storage systems. Distributed-PV and battery inverters in Australia are required to exhibit voltage-responsive power-quality response modes to prevent excessive voltage rise caused by increasing day-time energy exports, but these modes can curtail power output and limit the value that can be gained from the renewable energy assets. For the first time in Australia, this paper studies all three inverter power-quality response modes and develops novel algorithms to assess curtailment. The algorithms are applied to a real-world dataset of 1-sec distributed-PV and battery power measurements from 1300 residential households; therefore, data resolution is higher and sample size is larger than previous related studies. Using these datasets, the study compares the experienced curtailment between distributed-PV only sites and distributed-PV coupled with battery sites for the first time. The study investigates and quantifies the energy loss due to curtailment within the South Australia region with over 40% distributed-PV penetration which has the highest uptake in the world. The results show that average curtailment loss was 1.5% for distributed-PV only sites and 0.2% for distributed-PV coupled with battery sites, however, some sites were heavily impacted losing up to 25% of generation. The reasons for the larger curtailment loss were identified as wiring and network connection faults and high voltage set-points at households' respective local substations. Other potential reason for the heavily impacted sites is being located towards the end of the low voltage feeder, however this couldn't be verified due to lack of spatial data. The large variation in curtailed generation across sites raises concerns for system owners and suggests further inquiry into the power-quality response mode design and regulations. The study also examines inverter conformance using real-world operational data for all three power quality response modes for the first time, and the results showed a low rate of conformance according to the Australian Standards and there were various discrepancies in the execution of these modes which raises concerns considering the increasing importance of distributed-PV and battery inverter fleet in supporting network operations and security. Conventional fossil-fuel-based power systems are undergoing rapid transformation via the replacement of coal-fired generation with wind and solar farms. The stochastic and intermittent nature of such renewable sources demands alternative dispatchable technology capable of meeting system stability and reliability needs. Battery energy storage can play a crucial role in enabling the high uptake of wind and solar generation. However, battery life is very sensitive to the way battery energy storage systems (BESS) are operated. In this paper, we propose a framework to analyse battery operation in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) electricity spot and contingency reserve markets. We investigate battery operation in different states of Australia under various operating strategies. By considering battery degradation costs within the operating strategy, BESS can generate revenue from the energy market without significantly compromising battery life. Participating in contingency markets, batteries can substantially increase their revenue with almost no impact on battery health. Finally, when battery systems are introduced into highly volatile markets (such as South Australia) more aggressive cycling of batteries leads to accelerated battery aging, which may be justified by increased revenue. The findings also suggest that with falling replacement costs, the operation of battery energy systems can be adjusted, increasing immediate revenues and moving the battery end-of-life conditions closer. This paper develops new practical rule-based energy management systems (EMSs) for typical grid-connected houses with solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery by considering different rates for purchasing and selling electricity. The EMSs are developed to supply the household's loads and reduce operating costs of the system based on different options of flat and time-of-use (ToU) rates for buying and selling electricity prices. Four different options are evaluated and compared in this study: (1) Flat-Flat, (2) ToU-Flat, (3) Flat-ToU, and (4) ToU-ToU. The operation cost is calculated based on the electricity exchange with the main grid, the equivalent cost of PV generation, as well as the degradation cost of battery storage. The operation of the grid-connected house with rooftop solar PV and battery is evaluated for a sunny week in summer and a cloudy week in winter to investigate the proper performance for high and low generations of PV. While the developed rule-based EMS are generic and can be applied for any case studies, a grid-connected house in Australia is examined. For this purpose, real data of solar radiation, air temperature, electricity consumption, and electricity rates are used. Energy storage plays a crucial role in the safe and stable operation of power systems under high renewable energy penetration. Unlike conventional energy sources, the special physical characteristics of battery energy storage make it challenging to apply in practice. Some countries have been developing battery energy storage for a long time, and it is worthwhile to learn from the policies and market mechanisms for the development of battery energy storage to clear the obstacles for large-scale development and participation in the power market. This study focuses on the current status of battery energy storage, development policies, and key mechanisms for participating in the market and summarizes the practical experiences of the US, China, Australia, and the UK in terms of policies and market mechanisms. Then, the challenges of the current development of battery energy storage are analyzed, and suggestions are made in terms of policies and market mechanisms, so as to provide a reference for the development of battery energy storage in other countries or regions. Common property (CP) is a significant consumer of electricity in apartment buildings. Although some apartments in Australia have adopted shared microgrid configurations to offset grid consumption, the characteristics and load patterns of CP are rarely discussed due to lack of available data. As common areas normally constitute part of owner corporations, energy distribution in these premises requires attention. This paper presents empirical analysis of the CP load connected to shared solar and battery storage for three apartment complexes located in Perth Australia. Load patterns for CP over a defined dataset period were analyzed, and grid usage reduction was examined by implementing and comparing three energy allocation strategies based on surplus energy utilization. The findings indicated significant grid usage reduction for CP load in different apartments after implementation of three strategies. Instantaneous consumption decreased 72%, and surplus allocation strategy reduced 91%, while consumption-based allocation reduced 76%, of grid electricity. Moreover, consumption-based allocation offered improved cost benefits compared to the other two strategies. The results further revealed the usefulness of energy allocation and effectiveness of surplus energy utilization. Based on outcomes, the strategies provide consolidation with conventional energy trading mechanisms and broadly link to the virtual power plant concept for coordinating energy flows between multiple generators. Recent trends in increased public environmental awareness coupled with the introduction of governmental incentives, has resulted in a remarkably rapid growth in rooftop photovoltaic (PV) installations at a residential level in Australia. Despite the widely perceived economic and environmental benefits of rooftop PV, the economic and environmental performance of rooftop PV under Australian conditions are yet to be thoroughly examined. Whilst prior studies on the subject of rooftop PV are extensively overseas based, the conditions under which they are performed differ immensely from the Australian conditions. Consequently, this paper focuses on evaluating the life cycle economic and environmental merit of rooftop PV in Australia. By making use of component-wise costs and embedded emissions associated with each component of the rooftop PV generation system, the life cycle cost and emission models have been developed. For this to occur, the Australian costs and, energy and emission intensities have been used. All the life cycle factors relating to the manufacturing, purchasing, installation and operation of rooftop PV are considered. A sensitivity analysis is performed with respect to electricity price, feed-in tariff, battery price, battery lifetime and emission intensities. The results of the cost and emissions analyses are collectively used to estimate the cost of emissions mitigation through the use of rooftop PV for current and potential future scenarios in Australia. The cost payback and the energy payback times are found to range between 11 to more than 25 years and 1.75 to 14 years, respectively. The study also reveals that local load profile can have a significant impact on payback times. For example, the cost payback without battery storage is found to be the least for Tasmania which hosts the least favourable solar insolation conditions and lowest feed-in tariff amongst the Australian states however possesses a high daily load and electricity price. An increasing number of residential customers have installed hybrid rooftop solar battery systems (HRSBSs). Currently, most HRSBSs are installed behind-the-meter (BTM), where only customers’ net load is measured by smart meters. This invisibility poses significant challenges to the system operation. Disaggregating BTM PV generation and battery charging/discharging profile of customers can enhance the grid-edge observability. This article proposes an energy disaggregation method to jointly separate the PV generation and battery charging/discharging power from the net load. First, a Home Smart Battery Management model is built to simulate the battery charging/discharging profile. Second, an optimal disaggregation model is established based on a contextually supervised source separation method. Furthermore, the feature vectors of PV, load, and battery are extracted as the input of the disaggregation model. Understanding the complexities around managing the end-of-life (EoL) residential solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) is a precursor to a better decision-making process that mitigates unintended product life-cycle impacts. In this paper, a participatory Systems Thinking approach was utilised to build a causal loop diagram (CLD) for this system based on the collective knowledge of stakeholders. The developed CLD was categorised into three sub-systems: (1) waste flows; (2) regulatory aspects; and (3) industry strategies and government incentives. Two main system archetypes were identified in a reflection to the CLD, namely fixes that fail and drifting goals. The identified feedback loops indicate the need to introduce a comprehensive national product stewardship scheme, complimentary landfill restrictions, and provide sufficient incentives to industries for promoting recovery activities within residential PV panels and BESS sectors. An effective waste management system for these renewable energy technologies is most effective if industries are required to participate through regulation which also specifies certain targets, such as product and material recovery rates and establishes a sustainable funding model to meet operational requirements and future needs. The increasingly prohibitive overseas waste export market will require local industries and governments to collaboratively improve domestic recycling capability and capacity. One way of setting up hybrid wind farms is through augmentation of turbines with battery energy storage systems (BESS). Due to variation in wind speed in such wind farms, the cost of BESS increases and reduction in battery life takes place. This paper proposes a wake management technique to reduce the operational cost of a hybrid wind farm equipped with BESS. The battery charging and discharging powers are ascertained considering error in the wind speed prediction. This investigation considers three different conditions for a wind farm, namely, (i) without wake (ii) without wake management and (iii) with wake management. An ageing model is utilized for the lead-acid battery while accounting for temperature and depth of discharge changes to assess the battery operational cost and lifecycle count. Simulation analysis for a two-turbine layout with the upstream turbine yawed from 0 ∘ to 5 ∘ , presents a 44.37% savings in operational cost and 79.74% increase in battery life evaluated for a dataset obtained from Challicum hills in Australia. Additionally, the battery operational cost is minimized at a yaw angle of 15°. Uncertainty analysis is done to study the effect of prediction technique on the lifecycle count. This article determines the optimal capacity of solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage (BES) for grid-connected households to minimize the net present cost of electricity. The real-time rule-based home energy management systems using actual annual data of solar insolation, ambient temperature, household electricity consumption, and electricity rates are used in the optimization process. The above-mentioned technique is applied to two system configurations—household with a solar PV and a BES. The uncertainty analysis is implemented using ten years of real data to confirm the optimal results. An accurate cash flow analysis is also presented to illustrate the customer payment in each year during the project lifetime. The sensitivity analysis is conducted by varying the cost and capacity of system components, grid constraint, average daily electricity demand, and retail price of electricity. A typical grid-connected household in South Australia is considered as the case study. A practical guideline is presented for the residential consumers in South Australia to select the optimal PV/BES based on their daily average electricity demand and the available rooftop space for PV installation. The purpose of this paper is to provide a consideration of the role of battery energy storage in enhancing electricity grid stability at a time of increased use of non-hydro renewable generation sources, focusing on the Australian case. Besides the creation of a strategic reserve one measure that might reduce this instability that have being increasingly attracted much attention by both the operators of power systems and electricity distribution networks is the use of battery energy storage. Challenging frequency control issues, such as the reliability and security of the power system, arise when increasing penetration levels of inverter-interfaced generation are imposed. As a result of the displacement of convention generation in favour of renewable energy sources, the reduction of frequency response capabilities can be seen. A promising method of overcoming the aforementioned challenges is to utilise Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which provides frequency support by injecting instantaneous power to the grid and back up the conventional generation systems. However, large battery systems increase the cost while inadequate battery capacities result in poor performance. This paper, therefore, proposes an approach for finding the optimum BESS size for an islanded microgrid power system. The determination of the optimum BESS size is based on an existing case study, under which the most severe contingencies of generation loss and load loss have been accounted for, as well as different levels of penetration of renewable energy sources. As a result of using meta-heuristic optimization (Grey Wolf Optimization), the constraint optimization problem has been identified as BESS sizing. Through the use of real-time simulation DIgSILENT PowerFactory software, estimated BESS size can be applied to a standalone microgrid to test the frequency of support capabilities. Australia is one of the leading countries in energy transition, and its largest power system is intended to securely operate with up to 75% of variable renewable generation by 2025. High-inertia synchronous condensers, battery energy storage systems, and grid-forming converters are some of the technologies supporting this transformation while facilitating the secure operation of the grid. Synchronous condensers have enabled 2500 MW of solar and wind generation in the state of South Australia, reaching minimum operational demands of ≈100 MW. Grid-scale battery energy storage systems have demonstrated not only market benefits by cutting costs to consumers but also essential grid services during contingencies. Fast frequency response, synthetic inertia, and high fault currents are some of the grid-supporting capabilities provided by new developments that strengthen the grid while facilitating the integration of new renewable energy hubs. This manuscript provides a comprehensive overview, based on the Australian experience, of how power systems are overcoming expected challenges while continuing to integrate secure, low cost, and clean energy. More than 2 million houses in Australia have installed solar photovoltaic (PV) systems; however, apartment buildings have adopted a low percentage of solar PV and battery storage installations. Given that grid usage reduction through PV and battery storage is a primary objective in most residential buildings, apartments have not yet fully benefited from installations of such systems. This research presents shared microgrid configurations for three apartment buildings with PV and battery storage and evaluates the reduction in grid electricity usage by analyzing self-sufficiency. The results reveal that the three studied sites at White Gum Valley achieved an overall self-sufficiency of more than 60%. Owing to the infancy of the shared solar and battery storage market for apartment complexes and lack of available data, this study fills the research gap by presenting preliminary quantitative findings from implementation in apartment buildings.
