Purpose: Diabetes is one of the health problems of increasing importance owing to the increase in its incidence and the problems it causes, and it is closely related to nutrition. This study aims to determine the relationship between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) scores of individuals with type 2 diabetes, depression, anxiety and quality of life. Design/methodology/approach: In this cross-sectional study, 158 individuals with type 2 diabetes who applied to a nutrition and diet outpatient clinic of a private hospital in Istanbul were included. Their depression status was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory; their anxiety status was evaluated using the Beck Anxiety Inventory; and their quality of life was evaluated using the Short Form 36 Quality of Life scale. One-way ANOVA test was used to define the difference between groups. All test results were evaluated at a significance level of 0.05. Findings: There was no significant relationship between DII scores, depression (p = 0.814) and anxiety (p = 0.817). However, a significant decrease was observed in the scores of the quality of life criterion in the groups with high depression and anxiety scores (p < 0.05). In addition, participants with high anxiety states had higher HbA1c levels (p = 0.043). Originality/value: Individuals in this sample with no known psychiatric diagnosis or treatment history demonstrated a significant relationship between depression and anxiety scores and quality of life. The aim of this study was to compare the anxiety, depression, and quality of life of husbands of women with breast cancer referred to the chemotherapy clinic with husbands of non-affected wives. This was a case-control study, with purposive-convenience sampling method. 190 husbands of patients with or without breast cancer participate in this study. Data collection tools included a four-part questionnaire, consisted of demographic characteristics, shortened form of quality of life questionnaire, Beck depression inventory, and Beck anxiety inventory. In the areas of social relations and living environment (QolD3, QolD4), a statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in quality of life (p-value < 0.001). Pearson correlation coefficient showed a statistically significant difference in the case group between the history of chemotherapy and mean anxiety score (p-value < 0.001), and quality of life with number of children (p-value < 0.002). Purpose: The symptoms and findings resulting from thyroid dysfunctions display a picture similar to mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, which are the most common psychiatric disorders in the community. Therefore, this study aims to examine patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis receiving L-thyroxine therapy and euthyroid patients with postoperative hypothyroidism receiving L-thyroxine therapy in terms of their susceptibility to anxiety and depression and the change in their quality of life, as well as determine the role of the thyroid gland in psychosocial life. Material and method: For evaluating anxiety, depression, and quality of life, Beck depression and Beck anxiety inventories and SF-36 were administered to 120 people (20-80 years old) who were applied to the Department of Endocrinology of Sivas Cumhuriyet University. Forty of them had developed hypothyroidism after thyroid surgery, 40 were diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis at some point in their life and are now in a euthyroid state after L-thyroxine treatment, and 40 were healthy people in the control group. Data were analyzed on SSPS. Results: The reasons for these psychosocial effects on individuals were evaluated in multiple ways, such as thyroid dysfunction, having a chronic disease, the idea of constant drug use, the effect of autoimmunity, and endogenous hormone secretion. Thyroidectomy patients' anxiety and depression were higher, and their quality of life was poorer than both Hashimoto thyroiditis patients and the control group (p<0.05). In addition, patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis and thyroidectomy had higher anxiety and depression and poorer quality of life than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis are more depressed and anxious and have a lower quality of life than the control group due to the autoimmunity effect. On the other hand, patients with thyroidectomy were psychologically more affected than Hashimoto thyroiditis patients, and their quality of life was poorer due to the lack of endogenous hormone secretion and/or the undiscovered physiological effect of the thyroid gland. We aimed to investigate the impact of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) positivity on women's mental health and sexual dysfunction (SD). Anxiety, hopelessness, and depression were investigated in this study as common psychological problems. This prospective cross-sectional case-control study was done on 213 participants who attended gynecology clinic from February 2021 to May 2022. The Turkish version of Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI)-6 was used to measure SD in women. The Turkish version of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) was used to measure depression, anxiety and hopelessness in women. According to the HPV test results, the subjects were divided into two groups: 1st group as HPV positive and 2nd group as HPV negative. 97 women in the 1st group and 116 patients in the 2nd group were included in the study. The participants' age and body mass index (BMI) were 33.91±3.74 and 24.88±3.01, respectively. There was a significant difference between HPV-positive and HPV-negative women in FSFI total scores and all subdomains (p-value<0.05). There was a significant difference in BDI, BHS, and BAI (p-value<0.05). There was a significant correlation between the FSFI and BAI in HPV-positive group. There was a significant correlation between the FSFI and BAI in HPV-negative group. There was a significant correlation between the FSFI and BDI in HPV-negative group. The family is one of the institutions that interfere with well-being throughout development and may impact on quality of life. In the context of epilepsy, psychosocial aspects cushion or increase as implications of the disease. The aim of this research was to evaluate the relationship between the quality of family relationships, depression and anxiety symptoms and the effects on quality of life in people with epilepsy. The participants were 63 people, mostly 65.6% women diagnosed with epilepsy. Patients answered the Family Climate Inventory (ICF), the Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventory and the Epilepsy Quality of Life Inventory (QOLIE-31). This study has a cross-sectional and empirical cohort design. Significant correlations were found between family variables - cohesion, support and family conflict - and mood with the variables of quality of life, such as emotional well-being, energy/fatigue and overall quality of life. The results also show that individuals with. The results also demonstrate that individuals with high cohesion and high conflict have, respectively, a less and higher likely to present depressive symptoms. In addition, the linear regression model with the Beck Inventory of Depression and Positive Family Climate (support and family cohesion) explains (R = .28) quality of life. The results indicate the importance of family support and cohesion for the improvement of quality of life and the relationship between family conflict and the highest rates of anxiety and depression. Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the current situation of hypoparathyroid patients and to investigate the relationship between treatment adherence and quality of life. Study design Prospective, multicentre study. Methods Adult patients presenting with the diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism to 20 different endocrinology clinics were included. They were receiving conventional therapies for hypoparathyroidism, using calcium, active vitamin D, and magnesium. We collected data on demographic features, disease- and treatment-related information, and results of routine laboratory tests, treatment adherence, and presence of complications. Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Short Form-36 quality of life assessments were administered. Results Among the 300 patients studied, 60.7% were adherent to their treatment, and 34.1% had complications. Anxiety and depression scores were significantly higher in non-adherent versus treatment-adherent patients (p<0.001 and p=0.001, respectively). Most of the domains of quality-of-life scores were also significantly lower in non-adherent patients. Both anxiety and depression scores showed significant, negative correlations with serum calcium and magnesium concentrations (r =−0.336, p<0.001 and r =−0.258, p<0.001, respectively). Conclusions Nearly 40% of the patients were non-adherent to conventional treatment for hypoparathyroidism, and such patients had higher anxiety and depression scores and poorer quality of life scores. Conventional treatment might not be sufficient to meet the needs of patients with hypoparathyroidism. In addition to seeking new therapeutic options, factors influencing quality of life should also be investigated and strategies to improve treatment adherence should be developed. Objective: Fatigue is a common symptom frequently reported in many disorders but little is known about the prevalence of fatigue in asthma. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of fatigue in asthmatic patients, the effect of fatigue on asthma quality of life and the relationship between fatigue and anxiety/depression Materials and methods: This prospective cross‐sectional study was conducted in Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Immunology and Allergic Diseases outpatient clinic from June 2019 to December 2019. Fatigue was assessed using the Checklist Individual Strength‐Fatigue (CIS‐Fatigue), psychological distress was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and quality of life were assessed using the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ). Results: In the present study, a total of 168 patients are included with an average age of 43.8 ± 4.3 years. Nearly 64.8% of patients had controlled asthma and (35.2%) patients had uncontrolled asthma. Fatigue (CIS‐Fatigue ≥ 27 points) was detected in 62.6% of patients and associated with asthma‐related quality of life, asthma control, dyspnea, depression and anxiety (P < 0.05). However, the degree of lung function impairment and asthma severity were not associated with fatigue. Conclusions: Fatigue as a symptom is common in asthmatic patients and correlates with asthma‐related quality of life, asthma control, dyspnea, depression and anxiety. Objective To compare Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) measures of depression and anxiety to the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and explore patterns of selected PROMIS measures in patients undergoing evaluation for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). Method BDI-II, BAI, and seven PROMIS measures were administered to 163 DBS candidates with diagnoses of Parkinson Disease (PD, n  = 102), Essential Tremor (ET, n  = 45), or Dystonia (n  = 16). Results Elevated PROMIS Depression using BDI-II Crosswalk equivalents predicted elevated BDI-II with 63% sensitivity and 94% specificity. On other PROMIS measures, 69 patients (42%) reported low Physical Function (T ≤ 40) with Pain Interference being the next most frequent abnormal score (n  = 51, 31%). Group differences were present for PROMIS Physical Function, Sleep Disturbance, and Pain. Conclusions These preliminary findings provide initial support for PROMIS Depression to assess mood disturbance in DBS candidates, and characterize other PROMIS measures in DBS candidates including group differences reflecting disease specific contribution to Quality of Life. Background: Fear of falling (FOF) is a serious problem in Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease (IPD) which increases mortality and affects Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL).Objective: To evaluate the effect of FOF on HRQoL in IPD.Methods: 84 controls and 87 IPD patients were compared by means of Fall Efficacy Scale (FES), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC Scale), Impact Of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Parkinson Disease Specific Quality of Life Scale (PDQ-39). Then, patients were divided into two subgroups such as patients with FOF (Group 2a) and patients without FOF (Group 2b) by FES. Groups were compared in terms of BBS, ABC Scale, IES-R, BDI, BAI, PDQ-39. Independent factors affecting HRQoL were measured.Results: FOF was higher in IPD patients than controls. Female sex, previous falls, off periods, hallucinations, urge incontinence were significantly higher in Group 2a. However, RBD, dyskinesia, daytime somnolence and FOG were not different in IPD patients whether they have FOF or not. FOF was mostly correlated to disability level and disease severity. In addition, UPDRS and FOF were found to be independent factors affecting HRQoL in IPD.Conclusions: Clinicians should be aware that FOF can be detected in IPD patients, who are female, depressed or anxious, who had more severe disease with off periods, urge incontinence, hallucinations and previous falls. Background/Aim. Recent investigations have established a significant correlation between melanoma and quality of life, as well as anxiety and depression in these patients. In prognosis of melanoma, the most important is the stage in which it is diagnosed. The objective of the study was to analyze the quality of life, anxiety and depression in patients with a diagnosis of melanoma at different stages of the disease. Methods. In our cross-sectional study, 40 consecutive patients with melanoma, diagnosed and treated at the Department of Dermatology and Venerology, Military Medical Academy in Belgrade during the period from October to November 2015, were included. Twenty respondents were in stages I and II (localized disease) and 20 respondents in the stage IV (distant metastases). We used European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ 30), Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) and Beck depression inventory (BDI). The statistical analysis included parametric and non-parametric descriptive statistics. Results. In patients with stages I and II of the disease, anxiety scores were higher in comparison to those in patients with the stage IV (37.5 vs. 14.5, respectively; p < 0.05), but depression was more pronounced (6 vs. 2.5, respectively; p < 0.05) in patients with the IV stage of the disease. There were statistically significant differences in all segments of quality of life between patients with stages I and II and those with the stage IV of the disease. The global quality of life was significantly worse in patients with the IV stage (33.5 vs. 83), the symptomatology was more pronounced (78.5 vs. 0) and the functioning was significantly worse (31 vs. 85) in relation to patients with stages I and II (p < 0.01) for all segments of quality of life. Conclusion. Anxiety and quality of life decrease, while depression increases with melanoma stages. The need for adequate social and family support as well as psychological assistance in order to achieve better coping with the illness are necessary in patients with melanoma. Further studies are needed for monitoring of anxiety, depression and quality of life from the moment of diagnosis of the disease over time, as well as the impact of new treatment modalities on these parameters. Albinism is an inherited condition that may cause mental challenges in individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychiatric distress that individuals with albinism experienced, the level of emotional impact caused by albinism on the quality of life and self-esteem. Twenty individuals with albinism, 20 individuals with vitiligo, 20 healthy controls included to the study. Participants were administered Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Coopersmith's Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI), World Health Organization Questionnaire on Quality of Life: Short Form (WHOQOL-BREF). BDI, BAI scores of individuals with albinism were significantly higher. The physical health, psychological, social relationship domain scores of the individuals with albinism were significantly lower than in healthy controls. Individuals with albinism had lower scores on Environment domain scores were lower than both those with vitiligo and healthy controls. The physical health, psychological, social relationship domain scores were negatively correlated with BDI; the physical health and environment domain scores were negatively correlated with BAI scores in albinism group. The CSEI scores of individuals with albinism were significantly lower than in healthy controls. According to our findings, the higher levels of depression and anxiety, lower levels of self-esteem, and quality of life indicate psychosocial distress among the individuals with albinism. Determination of the psychosocial distress experienced by individuals with albinism will contribute in better understanding of the experience of individuals with albinism and public awareness on albinism. Objective: It is known that the risk of anxiety disorders and depression in infertile women increases and their quality of life deteriorates. Temperamental characteristics are considered as predictors of mood disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate temperamental characteristics in infertile women and their effects on depression and anxiety levels, and the quality of life, and to reveal the differences and level of relationship compared to healthy women. Method: Fourty-four female patients with primary infertility and 30 healthy female controls were included in this study. Temperamental characteristics of the participants were assessed with Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-Autoquestionnaire version (TEMPS-A). Depression and anxiety severity were evaluated with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). To evaluate the quality of life, Short Form 36 (SF-36) health survey questionnaire was also applied. Results: Hyperthymic temperament scores were higher in infertile women than the control group (p=0.001). BDI scores were positively correlated with depressive and cyclothymic temperament scores, and BAI scores were positively correlated with depressive and anxious temperament scores. A negative correlation was found between hyperthymic temperament and BAI and BDI scores. Hyperthymic temperament scores were positively correlated with both physical and mental subdimension scores of the quality of life scale. Conclusion: In this study, hyperthymic temperament in infertile women was shown to be protective against anxiety and depression and it also improves the quality of life. Objective: The greater occipital nerve block (GONB) with local anesthetics is an effective treatment for chronic migraine (CM). In this study, it was aimed to demonstrate the change in quality of life, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance scores before and after treatment in CM patients who underwent GONB and the effectiveness of treatment. Patients and methods: The study included 84 patients diagnosed as CM according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders III beta version diagnostic criteria. The 24-Hour Migraine Quality of Life Questionnaire (MQoLQ), Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Headache Impact Test (HIT), and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were applied on patients before GONB treatment and at posttreatment months 1 and 3. Results: MQoLQ scores, which measured the daily quality of life, were 38 [3–66] before GONB treatment, and 64 [38–88] in the first month and 72 [40–86] in the third month after treatment. In addition, this increase was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Furthermore, we found a statistically significant decrease in disability, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance scores after treatment (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In this study, we observed a prominent improvement in quality of life and disability rates of CM patients treated with GONB compared to pretreatment. Objective To provide further convergent validity on the Personal Impact of Epilepsy Scale (PIES) Spanish version for use in Hispanics with epilepsy. Participants and Method This study included 90 patients (22 Hispanic and Spanish speaking - HSS, 30 Hispanic and English speaking – HES, and 38 non-Hispanic and English speaking – NHES) who were diagnosed with epilepsy and referred by their epileptologist for a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation that, in addition to cognitive measures, also included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and PIES in English or Spanish- depending on the participant's primary language. The PIES was created with subscales to measure the effect of seizures, adverse effects of treatment, and comorbidities such as mood disorders on quality of life. We compared scores on the PIES subscales in English and Spanish to determine equivalence. We further examined if language of administration moderated the relationship between PIES subscale scores and depression/anxiety through nonparametric bootstrapping. Results There were no significant demographic or clinical differences between the 3 groups examined. ANOVA contrast of mean scores on all PIES subscales between HSS, HES and NHES groups did not reach significance (Seizures F [2,88] =.06 , p = -.93; Medication use F[2,88] = 1.95, p =.14, Comorbidity F[2,88] =.64, p =.52, and total PIES F[2,88] =.19, p =.83). The relationships between PIES and BDI-II/BAI scores were not significantly moderated by language of administration. Conclusions Our data suggest clinical equivalency between the English and Spanish versions of the PIES. Furthermore, the relationships between PIES subscales and the BDI-II/BAI were not significantly changed by language of administration. These findings indicate that the Spanish PIES appears to have good convergent validity with the original English version and can be useful in the assessment of quality of life in HSS patients. Tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) catalyzes the rate-limiting step of serotonin synthesis. TPH2 is the brain-specific isoform of this enzyme, and genetic variations in the TPH2 gene have been shown to impact its transcription and enzymatic activity and are associated with mood disorders. In this study we focused on the rs4570625 (-703G/T) single nucleotide polymorphism of TPH2 gene. By using conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we examined the effect of this polymorphism on stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms as well as quality of life, evaluated based on the Holmes–Rahe Inventory, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life – Short Version, respectively. We found that individuals with the homozygous recessive T/T genotype had lower stress and depression scores. In addition, the quality of life in the psychological health domain was better in males with the T/T genotype. These results suggest that T/T genotype could decrease the susceptibility to developing stress and depression in the Mexican population without a diagnosis for an emotional disorder. Nowadays, infertility is one of the health issues in public health. Women with infertility suffer from a wide range of psychological problems. The goal of this study was to evaluate depression, sexual dysfunction and quality of life in Iranian women with infertility. In this study, 189 infertile women enrolled. All participants were asked to fill valid and reliable Persian versions of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), SF-36 and female sexual function index (FSFI). Mean age and mean duration of marriage were 28±5.9 and 5.9±0.3 years, respectively. One hundred and fifteen (60.8%) women had primary infertility and the remaining subjects (39.2%) secondary infertility. Mean BDI, BAI, FSFI and their domains as well as quality of life subscales were not significantly different between the two groups. There was a significant correlation between BDI, BAI, FSFI and subscales and domains of quality of life. Context: Seizures and accompanying situations including social, medical, and psychiatric problems threaten the quality of life (QOL) in patients with epilepsy. The World Health Organization defines health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Aims: This study examines the prevalence of both depression and anxiety symptoms and also impact of the affective state on QOL in patients with focal epilepsy in Turkey. Settings and Design: One hundred and five patients with focal epilepsy over 18 years old were included in this study. The patients were classified into four groups according to the presence of AS and seizure control. Subjects and Methods: Patients' affective symptoms (AS) and QOL were examined using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and QOL in Epilepsy Inventory-31 (QOLIE-31). Statistical Analysis Used: We used descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Mann–Whitney U-test, Kruskal–Wallis H-test, and also Pearson's and Spearman's correlation test for correlations. Results: There were positive correlations between total QOLIE-31 score and epilepsy surgery, employment, and seizure freedom, whereas negative correlations were found with antiepileptic drug use, anxiety, and depression. Statistically significant differences were found in QOLIE-31 totals and subscores between Groups 3 and 4 (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The presence of AS has a negative impact on QOL in patients with focal epilepsy. Background: Infertility has negative effects on the psychological well being of both men and women. There are little studies evaluating the psychological well-being in men suffering from infertility. Objective: The goal of this study was to define depression, anxiety and health related quality of life in infertile women's male partners. Material and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Women's Hospital between August 2015 and March 2016. By convenience sampling, 97 men in the infertile group (whose women attended a ward of Women's Hospital) and 83 in the control group participated in the study. They were asked to fill the valid and reliable Persian version of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and SF-36 questionnaires. Results: The anxiety score was significantly higher and the SF-36 scor significantly lower in the infertile group. Regression analysis by considering SF-36 as dependent variable and others as independent variables showed that BAI was an independent predictor of SF-36. Conclusion: Psychological well-being (depression and anxiety) should be considered in men whose wives attend an infertility clinic. Quality of life assessment is necessary in these men. • We evaluated seizure reduction, neuropsychiatric and psychosocial outcomes of 50 patients treated with responsive neurostimulation. • The 6-month median seizure frequency reduction and responder rate were 88% and 78%, respectively. • There was no statistically significant difference at a group level in any of the evaluated cognitive, psychiatric and quality of life outcomes. • Meaningful variability at an individual level was noted warranting careful patient selection and monitoring. The impact of responsive neurostimulation (RNS) on neuropsychiatric and psychosocial outcomes has not been extensively evaluated outside of the original clinical trials and post-approval studies. The goal of this study was to ascertain the potential real-world effects of RNS on cognitive, psychiatric, and quality of life (QOL) outcomes in relation to seizure outcomes by examining 50 patients undergoing RNS implantation for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). We performed a retrospective review of all patients treated at our institution with RNS for DRE with at least 12 months of follow-up. In addition to baseline demographic and disease-related characteristics, we collected cognitive (Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient, Verbal Comprehension, and Perceptual Reasoning Index), psychiatric (Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventory Scores), and QOL (QOLIE-31) outcomes at 6 and 12 months after RNS implantation and correlated them with seizure outcomes. Fifty patients (median age 39.5 years, 64% female) were treated with RNS for DRE in our institution from 2005 to 2020. Of the 37 of them who had well-documented pre and post-implantation seizure diaries, the 6-month median seizure frequency reduction was 88%, the response rate (50% or greater seizure frequency reduction) was 78%, and 32% of patients were free of disabling seizures in this timeframe. There was no statistically significant difference at a group level in any of the evaluated cognitive, psychiatric, and QOL outcomes at 6 and 12 months post-implantation compared to the pre-implantation baseline, irrespective of seizure outcomes, although a subset of patients experienced a decline in mood or cognitive variables. Responsive neurostimulation does not appear to have a statistically significant negative or positive impact on neuropsychiatric and psychosocial status at the group level. We observed significant variability in outcome, with a minority of patients experiencing worse behavioral outcomes, which seemed related to RNS implantation. Patients with multiple mental disorders often experience sexual dysfunction and reduced quality of life. The unified protocol (UP) is a transdiagnostic treatment for emotional disorders that has the potential to improve quality of life and sexual functioning via improved emotion management. The present study evaluates changes in quality of life and sexual functioning in a highly comorbid sample treated with the UP in a group format. Forty-eight patients were randomly assigned to either a UP active-treatment group or a medication-only control group. Treatment was delivered in 14 sessions over the course of 4 months. Symptoms of anxiety and depression were assessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory. Sexual functioning was assessed by the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX), and quality of life was assessed by the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF scale (WHOQOL-BREF). Quality of life, anxiety and depression all significantly improved among participants treated with the UP. Some improvement in sexual functioning was also noted. Background: Different standardized questionnaires are used to assess tinnitus severity, making comparisons across studies difficult. These questionnaires are also used to measure treatment-related changes in tinnitus although they were not designed for this purpose. To solve these problems, a new questionnaire - the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) - has been established. The TFI is highly responsive to treatment-related change and promises to be the new gold standard in tinnitus evaluation. The aim of the current study was to validate a German version of the TFI for a German-speaking population in Switzerland.Methods: At the ENT department of the University Hospital Zurich, 264 subjects completed an online survey including the German version for Switzerland of TFI, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and sociodemographic variables. Internal consistency of the TFI was calculated with Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Pearson correlation coefficients were used for the test-retest reliability of the TFI and to investigate convergent and discriminant validity between the THI and the BDI and BAI, respectively. Factor analysis was assessed using a principal component analysis with oblique rotation. The different factors extracted were then compared with the original questionnaire.Results: The German version of the TFI for Switzerland showed an excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.97) and an excellent test-retest reliability of 0.91. The convergent validity with THI was high (r = 0.86). The discriminant validity with BAI and BDI showed moderate results (BAI: r = 0.60 and BDI: r = 0.65). In the factor analysis only five factors with one main factor could be extracted instead of eight factors as described in the original version. Nevertheless, relations to the original eight subscales could be demonstrated.Conclusion: The German version of the TFI for Switzerland is a suitable instrument for measuring the impact of tinnitus. The reliability and validity of this version are comparable with the original version of the TFI. Although this study showed only five factors in the factor analysis, relations to the original eight subscales were identified. Background: Reduced health-related quality of life in the physical domain (HRQOLphysical) has been reported to increase risks for cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, the mechanism underlying this phenomenon is still unclear. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) that connects the body and mind is a biologically plausible candidate to investigate this mechanism. The aim of our study is to examine whether the HRQOLphysical independently contributes to heart rate variability (HRV), which reflects ANS activity. Methods: We recruited 329 physically and mentally healthy adults. All participants completed Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory and World Health Organization Questionnaire on Quality of Life: Short Form-Taiwanese version (WHOQOL-BREF). They were divided into groups of individuals having high or low scores of HRQOLphysical as discriminated by the quartile value of WHOQOL-BREF. We obtained the time and frequency-domain indices of HRV, namely variance (total HRV), the low-frequency power (LF; 0.05-0.15 Hz), which may reflect baroreflex function, the high-frequency power (HF; 0.15-0.40 Hz), which reflects cardiac parasympathetic activity, and the LF/HF ratio. Results: There was an independent contribution of HRQOLphysical to explaining the variance in HRV after excluding potential confounding factors (gender, age, physical activity, alcohol use, depression and anxiety). Compared with the participants with high levels of HRQOLphysical, those with low levels of HRQOLphysical displayed significant reductions in variance and LF. Conclusions: This study highlights the independent role of low HRQOLphysical in contributing to the reduced HRV in healthy adults and points to a potential underlying mechanism for HRQOLphysical to confer increased risks for CVD. Abstract: Background: The quality of life (QoL) of adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) has gained significant interest. In addition to medical problems, many patients with CHD face psychosocial, educational, and behavioral challenges. However, few studies have examined the relationship between disease severity and QoL in adults with CHD. Methods: Eighty-five patients (50 men, 35 women) aged 20–52years (median, 26.5years) were enrolled. Patients underwent a QoL, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) survey. The scores were compared with those of age- and gender-matched population data according to the degree of underlying CHD. Disease severity was classified in relation to initial diagnosis, illness course, and current functional status (New York Heart Association [NYHA] class, ability index, CHD functional index, ventricular ejection fraction, and peak VO2). Results: There was no significant correlation between disease severity and current functional status assessed by BDI and BAI. Patients who stated that they were religious had better scores for resilience (p=0.031), physical QoL (p=0.008), and environmental QoL (p=0.025). Environmental QoL scores were higher in patients who fully understood their disease (p=0.004). Current NYHA functional class was associated with scores for psychological resilience. Conclusions: CHD severity had a detrimental impact on resilience only when measured in terms of poor functional status. The initial diagnosis and course of the illness influence QoL and perceived health. Good psychosocial adaptation could be the result of close family relationships and involvement, making mental adjustment easier. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: Several studies that have evaluated psychological and counseling interventions suggest that a proactive approach may be effective in preparing patients for the experience of living with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). The purpose of this study was to develop and assess cognitive and behavioral interventions in reducing stress and anxiety and improving quality of life. Methods: One hundred Patients with ICD in Shariati and Imam Khomeini Hospital in Tehran, Iran during 2009- 2010 were divided randomly into two groups to undergo cognitive and behavioral interventions (case group) or serve as the control group. The patients in the case group were received relaxation, cognitive and ICD alarm trainings three times during the study period. Routine care was the same in both groups after ICD implantation. We evaluated anxiety and depression by, respectively, Beck anxiety and Beck depression inventories in the two groups before and after ICD implantation. Quality of life was also evaluated by SF-36 instrument before and after the interventions. The results were later compared between the two groups. Results: Beck scores for anxiety in the case and control groups before the interventions were 24.9±15.5 and 24.2±15.8 (P=0.590), respectively; and after six months they were 13.5±8.3 and 17.9±10.1 (P=0.005), respectively. Beck scores for depression in the case and control groups before the interventions were 17.7±9.8 and 18.4±10.6 (P=0.590), respectively; and after six months the scores, respectively, were 13.5±8.3 and 17.9±10.1 (P=0.005). Conclusion: It seems that psychological interventions can reduce anxiety and depression after ICD implantation. Further studies with more sample sizes are necessary for the final judgment. The article presents a study which aims to test the effects of smartphone-delivered behavioral activation treatment. The study employed a randomized controlled trial, Beck anxiety inventory (BAI), Beck depression inventory (BDI), and quality of life inventory (OLIN) . Results suggest the smartphones can be integrated into society and serve an important role in the healthcare in which therapists can use the application for behavioral activation.

It was aimed to investigate the existence of the symptoms related to fibromyalgia in the first-degree relatives or spouses of the patients and to assess the psychologic and general health status of these individuals and the correlation of these with the patients' status. Thirty-seven patients with FS, 32 first-degree relatives or spouses of the patients and 30 healthy subjects as a control group were included. Symptoms related to FS were recorded in all subjects. Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire and Nottingham Health Profile were used to assess the components of functional status and quality of life. General health status was evaluated by General Health Questionnaire. Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory were used to assess the psychologic status. There were significant differences in the frequency of the symptoms between three groups ( P < 0.05). Symptoms and signs related to of relatives/spouses of the patients and healthy controls were found to be significantly lower than those of the patients. GHQ, BAI and BDI scores of patients were found to be significantly higher than relative/spouses and control groups ( P < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences between three groups in energy level, pain, sleep and physical abilities subscores of NHP ( P < 0.05). No significant differences were detected in NHP subscores between relative/spouses of the patients and controls ( P > 0.05). No fibromyalgia symptoms or signs were detected in the relatives/spouses. Objective: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common significant motor impairment in childhood. Studies on the quality of life (QOL) of children with CP are limited. The aim of this study was to describe parent-reported QOL of children with CP and to investigate the factors that inşuence it. QOL was measured using the Turkish version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). Methods: The study sample consisted of children who applied to the outpatient Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department of The Sami Ulus Child Hospital between June 2008 and December 2008 and were diagnosed as having CP. Medical and developmental history of children was obtained from their parents. The physical evaluation of CP patients was made by the second author. The primary caregivers were asked to fill out the PedsQL parent proxy report, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Data were analyzed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 11.5. Results: A total of 37 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 5.3±3.3years and of the primary caregivers (parents) was 29.5±4.9. When the factors that inşuence the PedsQL scores were analyzed, a statistically significant inverse correlation of BDI and BAI scores was found only with Physical Health Total Score, Psychosocial Health Total Score and Total Scale Score. Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that QOL of children with CP was inşuenced only by the mental status of the primary caregivers (parents); no statistically significant correlation was found between the other variables and the PedsQL scores.
