This article considers the fugitive slave narrative as an important episode in the history of the book. It notes the multiple editions to which many of these books ran, and the difficulty of determining a comprehensive bibliographic record of publication. We establish this bibliographic record for Moses Roper's autobiography, Narrative of the Adventures and Escape of Moses Roper from American Slavery , whose sixteen editions were published between 1837 and 1849 in English and Welsh, in what the article identifies as six phases of publication. The article argues for the documentary importance of the paratextual material and visual imagery folded into each edition as extensions of the autobiographical record and, therefore, moments of historical redefinition that respond to the material, economic, social, and cultural conditions of production. This includes the capacity of Black writing to establish spheres of Atlantic print culture other than Anglophone. The article shows that the bibliographic surfeit of nineteenth-century Black writing exemplified by Roper's work provides an untapped biographical resource in which important clues to the biographies of their authors, and of their families in slavery and in freedom, lie hidden in plain sight. Bibliographic attention to Roper's work therefore reveals the novel ways in which the book was systematized as a form of archival practice at a time when it was necessary to travel light, and the public sphere provided one of the few hopes of establishing a durable record of the author's personal and family history. The remarkable theatrical history of Joseph Addison's 1713 tragedy Cato is well known, but the play is also an exceptional case in book history. This essay looks in detail at its two entirely distinct "first" editions. It resolves the relationship between these two editions and considers the quite different problems they raise for the bibliographer: the one of how we distinguish between edition and issue in a context of frenzied publication, standing type, and incremental resetting; the other, of how a manifestly substandard and suspicious edition came to carry the self-proclaimed hallmark of the play's true publisher, Jacob Tonson. The early print history of Addison's Cato , this essay shows, both puts pressure on the language of bibliography and also marks an important and revealing episode in a number of larger histories: those of the Tonson house, of book piracy and copyright protection, and of the bestseller. Studies carried out in Europe are of great importance in terms of the history of the Book of Dede Korkut studies. The present study is based on the analytical evaluation of studies conducted in Europe on the Book of Dede Korkut and in foreign languages spoken in Europe. For the list of academic studies in this article, previous bibliographic studies, European and USA-centered databases/online catalogs were utilized. The bibliographic list obtained was classified as "translations" and "selected other works". This study, which has a descriptive character in terms of presenting a bibliographic list on the Book of Dede Korkut, can also be accepted as an analytical review in terms of a holistic evaluation of the studies in question. The present study, which aims to bring the studies on the Book of Dede Korkut in foreign languages to the attention of scholars who read and write in Turkish, to determine the general tendencies of the Dede Korkut researches in Europe and to make a general evaluation based on these determinations, has the purpose of contributing to the corpus of the Book of Dede Korkut researches. Distant reading promises access to "the great unread", which should allow scholars to rethink the history of literature. However, the rise in volume of data does not guarantee the understanding of a corpus and its relation to the literary population. This article discusses how a "complete" corpus of the 19th-century poetry books in Russian might be collected with account for historical data and potential survivorship bias. Even if bibliographical sources cannot provide a complete list of books printed in a given period, the amount of "incompleteness" can be directly estimated with the unseen species models. The estimation of survival ratios for printed poetry shows differences in the loss rate across different types of sources: with conventional editions, like books and anthologies, are well-preserved, while booklets and pamphlets are the largest expected source of loss. This research note offers a contextual overview of the printing history of Johann Blaeu's 1646 octavo edition of Hugo Grotius's De iure belli ac pacis (IBP). The note examines the printing process of the last edition that was prepared while Grotius was still alive, though it was published after his death. The note also sheds light on the theological dimension of some readers' annotations, and concludes by discussing the impact this edition had on the modern versions of the text. This note studies the 1650 edition of Hugo Grotius's De iure belli ac pacis. Using online and card catalogues, we have located eighty-nine copies, thirty-seven of which we examined in person, with an additional six fully digitised copies online. We hope that this research note on the preliminary results will generate greater interest in this unduly neglected edition. The note shows how, despite the connection established in the history of seventeenth-century politics that emphasized the ties between Grotius and the Peace of Westphalia, the reception of Grotius's 1650 edition bore no relation to the debates at Osnabrück and Münster. Lux Librorum: Essays on Books and History for Chris Coppens is a Festschrift honoring the esteemed Flemish book historian and librarian Chris Coppens. The article centers on a handwritten account of the stillbirth of conjoined twins in eighteenth-century Mexico stitched into a book about natural history. Finding things in books as part of an accidental process of discovery in the present does not equal random acts by users in the past. Inserting documents and prints of various kinds into books represented for historical actors a distinct kind of archival practice that combined careful observation, deliberation, and a certain measure of dexterity to manipulate the physicality of a book. Examples of records and objects found in other titles from the same time period and region help to contextualize the way people used books and how they stored memories, as well as what we as researchers can learn when critically analyzing the materiality of print. At the end of the twentieth century, increased access to certain technologies and processes, such as 3D scanning, computer-aided design, rapid fabrication and microcircuitry, enabled consumers to become creators of material design. These activities, which collectively came to be known as making, extended across both public and private sectors, including the study of the book. This paper offers an extended discourse on the full range of activities comprising the bibliographical maker movement, which in recent years has coalesced around the idea that maker culture may be employed to enhance our understanding of not only the history but also the future of the book. The application of these new technologies toward critical book studies has proceeded from the practice-based approach to research and instruction first begun under the auspices of the bibliographical press movement in the mid-twentieth century. In keeping with this earlier work, biblio-making is predicated upon the idea that certain kinds of knowledge are best gained through personal experience and experimentation. This article will first outline the benefits of applying 3D technologies to the goals of book history before locating and describing the activities of participating individuals and institutions within three broad categories: holistic, 3D digitisation; recovering historical tools and processes; and creative experiments in book design. As the article demonstrates, the strength and potential of the bibliographical maker movement lies in its widening community of practice and that, by virtue of its being an open-access network of constituents, it is now poised to make a significant and lasting contribution to the study of the book. This article examines how digital methodologies expand the capabilities of book history scholarship through a case study of the Women's Print History Project. The WPHP is a database of thousands of bibliographical records about printed books linked to records about the persons and business firms that created them. Using what we call "radical descriptivism" tempered with "radical skepticism," we explore how traces of women's labor exist in plain sight and how books can obscure and reveal gendered norms. This article attributes one of the three "first" editions of Leviathan to the London printer John Richardson (fl. 1673–1703), revising Noel Malcolm's attribution to a different printer in the recent Clarendon Edition of Leviathan. We lay out the mystery of Leviathan 's so-called "Ornaments" edition and use evidence from damaged type pieces to say why we attribute its printing to Richardson. We then give a short sketch of Richardson's life and career and present evidence that supports a new date for the edition, including newly discovered advertisements and evidence from deteriorating type. We conclude with some implications for book history and bibliography, on the one hand, and Hobbes scholarship on the other. We argue that what we call "computational bibliography"—the analysis of bibliographical evidence through computational methods such as machine learning and computer vision— offers new angles for seeing the materiality and craft of clandestine, anonymously-printed books like Hobbes' Leviathan. This special issue offers a capacious sample of scholarship on religion and material texts in the Americas, and seeks to reveal the potential of material-texts approaches for the study of religion. It features articles by four early-career Americanists (Emily Floyd, Alexandra Kaloyanides, Roxanne Korpan, and Martin Tsang) whose research bridges both areas. Because material texts research typically relies on archives for its source base, I asked the authors of the "In Conversation" essays (Matthew P. Brown, Steffi Dippold, Kyle Roberts, and Judith Weisenfeld) to discuss what they see as the challenges and opportunities confronting archival research in material texts today. While the collected eight pieces reflect the diversity and originality of their authors, they make several collective contributions. This article considers how markers of place function differently in the print book ecosystem vs. the ebook ecosystem, using books associated with Australia and Western Australia as a case study. Although book historians have mostly failed to engage with ebooks as subject matter, they have considered in some detail the way in which markers of place function in the print book ecosystem. By surveying the scholarly output of book historians working with mapping technologies, it is possible to conclude that, in the print book ecosystem, there exist a handful of markers identifying the following categories: places associated with a book's setting, its author, its publication, its purchase, and its marketing and publicity. The latter three markers look substantially different in the ebook ecosystem than in the print book ecosystem. Aims: The aims of the present study were to assess the prevalence of recipes about invalid cookery in Australian cookbooks published from 1860 to 1950; describe the dishes regarded as suitable for invalids and summarise the advice about how best to feed invalids or convalescents in the home. Methods: Using published bibliographies, the Trove database, and the author's private collection, all available cookbooks published in Australia up to 1950 were reviewed and all recipes and advice about feeding invalids were recorded. Results: Eight hundred and eighty‐nine book titles were examined and 25% contained some recipes specifically designed for people who were sick or convalescing. One thousand, four hundred and seventy‐one different recipes were recorded with more than half for beverages, desserts and soups. The most common recipes were for beef tea, barley water, gruel and meat broths. Advice about feeding focused on the food requirements of invalids, safe and appealing meal service, cooking methods and suitable food choices. The recipes and advice did not appear to change substantially over the nine decades and most did not appear to be based on any clear scientific evidence. Conclusions: Many of the general principles of invalid cookery in these books are similar to the requirements of the light diet, commonly used in Australian hospitals up until the 1980s. This study deals with bibliography of Russian books published under the Tsarist Russia. It determines the fact that Russian scholars belonging to the Academy of Russian Sciences had produced valuable studies regarding the Balkans. The availability of them about the aforementioned region stems from the fact that destinies of both Russia and the Balkans are closely linked with each other. No doubt that this is of great importance for Turkish historiography as well. Anyu, found in ancient Chinese bibliographies, is an author's note that adds extra information to the prefaces of different classificatory sections, and may record annotations concerning individual books. Siku quanshu zongmu, which contains 127 occurrences of anyu, may be regarded as typical. While anyu are valuable and beneficial to the bibliographical study of ancient Chinese books and to Chinese literary history, study of them has long been neglected and only a few articles have been written. This paper tries to redress this neglect by providing a more comprehensive investigation of the distribution, content and contribution to the bibliographical study of ancient Chinese books and Chinese scholarly history by the anyu contained in the Siku quanshu zongmu. The Romanian Academy Library published 4 volumes of the Modern Romanian Bibliography, which is intended to continue the Old Romanian Bibliography. This exhaustive work contains all the titles of the books published in Romania between 1831 and 1918. Yet, there are still some flaws, including a small poem entitled The Verse of a Recruit, which was printed around 1847 in Sibiu or Braşov. Eighteenth-century European publications focused on book history followed the contemporaneous standards in science and scientific literature, but showed also certain characteristics arising from the state of bibliology itself. Bibliology at that time -- an in statu nascendi discipline-gained its scientific status through historical research. Fairly voluminous European literature on the history of book encompassed a broad spectrum of issues and facts, including the history of writing, manuscripts, printing, bookselling, and libraries. The typological approach to this legacy allows identifying its specific features, evolutionary tendencies, strengths and weaknesses of the early book historiography. In the presentation, various types of 18th-century publications are shown, distinguished by writing and editorial characteristics, form, content, objectives and targets. These include individual and multi-authored works; monographs and syntheses; original writings, compilations and adaptations; publications in different literary forms, such as letters and travelogues (e.g., library travels, Germ. In bibliology, the methodology of historical studies entirely depends on an applied approach. The author adheres to the historical approach that says that a science development is traced with a kind of its historical logic, with all ways of its development, including those that are dead-end. Based on such approach and starting from G. Peignot's concept of bibliology, the author logically traces trends of bibliology development in Western Europe beginning from the 17th century. The author concludes that by the beginning of the 19th century when Peignot presented his works, in the science there had already been the established corpora of scientific knowledge used by this outstanding French bibliologist. Investigation of book history sources or source research is a book science discipline that investigates the origin of book history sources, their retrieval, classification, evaluation and usage. This is partly a theoretical and partly an applied discipline. The theoretical part of source investigation includes the analysis of the authenticity, reliability, and typology of sources. The applied part of source investigation focuses on the issues of building the basis of sources and their usage. The general solution in the methodology of processing sources is classification. The main concepts of classification are type and sort. A type is perceived as a model of a group of objects (data, work or things) having a general essential property. A sort is defined as an object under classification that meets the type definition by a general or a partial attribute. Scholars of different countries have agreed that a type is determined by the following attributes: 1) time of origin (primary and secondary), 2) information format (written, visual, audial, linguistic, or objects). Book history perceives the second attribute as the most important because, according to it, sources are defined as written and non-written. Written sources are most numerous; depending on their purpose they are grouped into the following sorts: 1) books; 2) official documents; 3) critical and evaluation materials; 4) bibliographies; 5) statistical documents; 6) reference books of institutions and companies, catalogues, address books; 7) archival clerical documents; 8) advertisements of publications; 9) information material of periodicals; 10) diaries; 11) correspondence; 12) memoirs; 13) book research in other sciences; 14) publicistic writings; 15) book ownership marks; 16) other manuscript or printed sources. Non-written sources are less diverse. They include: 1) visual and audial documents; 2) objects of material culture (buildings, equipment, memorials, book culture means). Critical evaluation concerns mainly written sources. It may be internal and external. The first one helps to identify the sort of a source as a document and its attributes, and the latter is related to the significance of a document. A researcher builds his conclusions on the totality of sources and reconstructs the facts and phenomena that belong to the past of a book and serve as a basis for determining the regularities of its development. This catalog was produced between 1657 and 1660. An overview of the contents of the book catalogue is presented, highlighting several notable titles and characteristics of those included. A growing body of empirical bibliography and critical making aims at re-creating historical practice and interrogating book history through firsthand material means. None of this work has questioned the role or place of gender in the book trades by investigating either how women labored physically or how they were treated in a male-dominated workplace.
