Abstract

The existence and function of neurons remain largely unexplored in scleractinian corals. To gain a better understanding of neuronal functions in coral physiology, this study focused on Glycine-Leucine-Tryptophan-amide family neuropeptides (GLWamides), which have been shown to induce muscle contraction and larval metamorphosis in other cnidarians. Molecular identification and functional characterization of GLWamides in the adult stony coral Euphyllia ancora were performed. We successfully elucidated the full-length cDNA of GLWamide preprohormone in E. ancora (named EaGLW preprohormone). The deduced amino acid sequence was predicted to contain six potential GLWamide peptides. Tissue distribution analysis demonstrated that transcripts of EaGLW preprohormone were mainly expressed in the mouth (including the pharynx) and tentacles of the polyps. Immunodetection with an anti-GLWamide monoclonal antibody revealed that GLWamide neurons were mainly distributed in the epidermis of the mouth region and tentacle, in agreement with the distribution patterns of the transcripts. Treatment of the isolated mouth and tentacles with synthetic GLWamide peptides induced the contraction of these isolated tissues. Treatment of polyps with synthetic GLWamide peptides induced the contraction of polyps. These results suggest that GLWamides are involved in polyp contraction (myoactivity) in adult scleractinians. Our data provide new information on the physiological function of neuropeptides in scleractinians.

Abstract

International audience; The recessus orbitalis is an accessory organ of flatfishes functioning in the protrusion of the eyes. This character, along with cranial asymmetry and a forward insertion of the dorsal fin, have been considered synapomorphies for the Pleuronectiformes. New dissections and examination of images taken in the wild show that the recessus orbitalis is present in all representatives of Pleuronectoidei examined but is absent in the single species of Psettoidei dissected. Psettoidei, the most primitive pleuronectiform lineage, contains three recognized species; thus, the absence of the recessus orbitalis in this whole lineage is unclear without further dissections. Ancestral character estimation at the family level for the recessus orbitalis indicates that the recessus orbitalis was likely absent in the common ancestor of Pleuronectiformes but was most likely present in the common ancestor of the Pleuronectoidei. Given that so few species of flatfishes have been assessed for the recessus orbitalis to date, additional characterization of the distribution of the recessus orbitalis across flatfishes will further inform what states this character may have and if it is a synapomorphy of Pleuronectiformes or simply a derived character state of Pleuronectoidei.

Abstract

The gonochoristic feature with environmental sex determination that occurs during the yellow stage in the eel provides an interesting model to investigate the mechanisms of gonadal development. We previously studied various sex-related genes during gonadal sex differentiation in Japanese eels. In the present study, the members of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) superfamily were investigated. Transcript levels of anti-Müllerian hormone, its receptor, gonadal soma-derived factor (amh, amhr2, and gsdf, respectively) measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) showed a strong sexual dimorphism. Transcripts were dominantly expressed in the testis, and their levels significantly increased with testicular differentiation. In contrast, the expressions of amh, amhr2, and gsdf transcripts were low in the ovary of E2-feminized female eels. In situ hybridization detected gsdf (but not amh) transcript signals in undifferentiated gonads. amh and gsdf signals were localized to Sertoli cells and had increased significantly with testicular differentiation. Weak gsdf and no amh signals were detected in early ovaries of E2-feminized female eels. Transcript levels of amh and gsdf (not amhr2) decreased during human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)-induced spermatogenesis in males. This study suggests that amh, amhr2, and especially gsdf might be involved in the gene pathway regulating testicular differentiation of Japanese eels.

Abstract

International audience; Flight loss has evolved independently in numerous island bird lineages worldwide, and particularly in rails (Rallidae). The Aldabra white-throated rail (Dryolimnas [cuvieri] aldabranus) is the last surviving flightless bird in the western Indian Ocean, and the only living flightless subspecies within Dryolimnas cuvieri, which is otherwise volant across its extant range. Such a difference in flight capacity among populations of a single species is unusual, and could be due to rapid evolution of flight loss, or greater evolutionary divergence than can readily be detected by traditional taxonomic approaches. Here we used genetic and morphological analyses to investigate evolutionary trajectories of living and extinct Dryolimnas cuvieri subspecies. Our data places D. [c.] aldabranus among the most rapid documented avian flight loss cases (within an estimated maximum of 80,000-130,000 years). However, the unusual intraspecific variability in flight capacity within D. cuvieri is best explained by levels of genetic divergence, which exceed those documented between other volant taxa versus flightless close relatives, all of which have full species status. Our results also support consideration of Dryolimnas [cuvieri] aldabranus as sufficiently evolutionary distinct from D. c. cuvieri to warrant management as an evolutionary significant unit. Trait variability among closely related lineages should be considered when assessing conservation status, particularly for traits known to influence vulnerability to extinction (e.g. flightlessness).

Abstract

We demonstrated that oral intake of water by two calanoid copepods, Pseudodiaptomus annandalei and Eurytemora affinis takes place and has implications for their ecotoxicology. In the first experiment, copepods were exposed to a dyed medium, which allowed us to visually examine the possibility of water uptake by the copepod. We observed that both copepod species were taking in water orally and evacuated dye at different speeds. This exposure left concentrated dye in the guts of the copepods indicating adsorption into the gut epithelium. This was further demonstrated by exposing both copepod species independently to dissolved metals (Cd,17 µg/L; Cu,13.8 µg/L; Ni, 29.3 µg/L) and to dietary metals (Cd,18.8 µg/g; Cu, 35.3 µg/g; Ni, 32.5 µg/g). The results showed that although the concentration of dissolved metals they were exposed to were lower than those of the dietary metals, nevertheless, uptake of metals by both copepod species from the dissolved phase alone was substantially higher than from dietary exposure. This provides clear evidence to support our hypothesis that higher metal body burden observed in copepods exposed to dissolved metals than in those exposed to dietary metals is an implication of oral intake of water. P. annandalei showed higher excretion rate of metals when exposed to dissolved metals than E. affinis. However, the excretion rate of metals from both copepod species exposed to dietary metal was similar. We conclude here that both copepod species take in water orally. Our study further showed that metal uptake depends on the exposure routes and the uptake and excretion rates are dependent on the type of metals, amounts and the species.

Abstract

International audience; Dmrt1, doublesex- and mab-3-related transcription factor-1, has been suggested to play critical roles in male gonadogenesis, testicular differentiation and development, including spermatogenesis, among different vertebrates. Vasa is a putative molecular marker of germ cells in vertebrates. In this study, we cloned the full-length dmrt1 cDNA from Japanese eel, and the protein comprised 290 amino acids and presented an extremely conserved Doublesex and Mab-3 (DM) domain. Vasa proteins were expressed in gonadal germ cells in a stage-specific manner, and were expressed at high levels in PGC and spermatogonia, low levels in spermatocytes, and were absent in spermatids and spermatozoa of Japanese eels. Dmrt1 proteins were abundantly expressed in spermatogonia B cells, spermatocytes, spermatids, but not in spermatozoa, spermatogonia A and Sertoli cells. To our knowledge, this study is the first to show a restricted expression pattern for the Dmrt1 protein in spermatogonia B cells, but not spermatogonia A cells, of teleosts. Therefore, Dmrt1 might play vital roles at the specific stages during spermatogenesis from spermatogonia B cells to spermatids in the Japanese eel. Moreover, the Dmrt1 protein exhibited a restricted localization in differentiating oogonia in the early differentiating gonad (ovary-like structure) of male Japanese eels and in E2-induced feminized Japanese eels. We proposed that dmrt1 may be not only required for spermatogenesis but might also play a role in oogenesis in the Japanese eel.

Abstract

International audience; To investigate egg storage capacity of the copepod Acartia bilobata for aquaculture interest, we tested hatching success rate (HSR) of inclusive eggs (mixture of all egg types) after 4°C storage. The HSR peaked after 14 days storage when incubating at 28°C for 48 hr (85.8 ± 1.6%) and 72 hr (87.6 ± 0.9%), then gradually declined until 1 year (48 hr: 7 ± 0.6%; 72 hr: 19.4 ± 3.9%). Reallocation of fatty acid profile suggests that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is correlated with the HSR of A. bilobata eggs. Additionally, we investigated the HSR of diapausing eggs (unhatched eggs after 72 hr incubation of the inclusive eggs) after 4°C storage. Their HSR peaked after 14 days storage (48 hr:75.3 ± 3.5%; 72 hr:78.2 ± 2.1%), then gradually declined until 60 days (48 hr HSR:42.1 ± 2.3%; 72 hr HSR:53.0 ± 3.2%). Abstract

International audience; Previous investigations have uncovered divergent mitochondrial clades within the blue-spotted maskray, previously Neotrygon kuhlii (Müller and Henle). The hypothesis that the blue-spotted maskray may consist of a complex of multiple cryptic species has been proposed, and four species have been recently described or resurrected. To test the multiple-cryptic species hypothesis, we investigated the phylogenetic relationships and coalescence patterns of mitochondrial sequences in a sample of 127 new individuals from the Indian Ocean and the Coral Triangle region, sequenced at both the CO1 and cytochrome b loci. The maximum-likelihood (ML) tree of concatenated CO1+cytochrome b gene sequences, rooted by the New Caledonian maskray N. trigonoides yielded 9 strongly supported, main clades. Puillandre's ABGD algorithm detected gaps in nucleotide distance consistent with the ML phylogeny. The general mixed Yule-coalescent algorithm partitioned the dataset into putative species generally consistent with the ML phylogeny. Nuclear markers generally confirmed that distinct mitochondrial clades correspond to genetically isolated lineages. The 9 main lineages identified by ML analysis were geographically distributed in a parapatric fashion, indicating reproductive isolation. The hypothesis of multiple cryptic species is thus validated.

International audience; Nine morphologically similar but genetically distinct lineages in the blue-spotted maskray species complex, previously Neotrygon kuhlii (Müller and Henle) qualify as cryptic species. Four of these lineages have been previously described as Neotrygon australiae Last, White and Séret, Neotrygon caeruleopunctata Last, White and Séret, Neotrygon orientale Last, White and Séret, and Neotrygon varidens (Garman), but the morphological characters used in the descriptions offered poor diagnoses and their geographic distributions were not delineated precisely. The objective of the present work is to complete the description of the cryptic species in the complex. Here, an additional four lineages are described as new species on the basis of their mitochondrial DNA sequences: Neotrygon bobwardi, whose distribution extends from the northern tip of Aceh to the western coast of Sumatera; Neotrygon malaccensis, sampled from the eastern part of the Andaman Sea and from the Malacca Strait; Neotrygon moluccensis, from the eastern half of the Banda Sea; and Neotrygon westpapuensis from the central portion of northern West Papua. The geographic distributions of N. australiae, N. coeruleopunctata, N. orientale, and N. varidens are updated. For each species, a diagnosis is provided in the form of a combination of private or partly-private nucleotides at 2-4 nucleotide sites along a 519-base pair fragment of the CO1 gene. We believe that the present taxonomic revision will provide information relevant to the sound management and conservation of cryptic species of the blue-spotted maskray in the Coral Triangle region.

Abstract

This study determined the effect of cadmium (Cd) toxicity comparatively on two copepods, Eurytemora affinis (Poppe 1880) from a temperate region (Seine Estuary, France) and Pseudodiaptomus annandalei (Sewell 1919) from a subtropical region (Danshuei Estuary, Taiwan), according to their sex and reproductive stages. In addition, the effect of Cd to their life cycle traits was quantified. In the first experiment, both copepod sexes were exposed to 40, 80, 150, 220, and 360 µg/L of Cd and a control cultured in salinity 15, except that the temperature was 18 °C for E. affinis and 26 °C for P. annandalei. This allowed calculating median lethal concentration (LC50) of Cd after 96 h. This was 120.6 µg/L Cd for P. annandalei males which were almost twice as sensitive as P. annandalei females (LC50 = 239.5 µg/L Cd). For E. affinis females, the LC50 was 90.04 µg/L Cd, reflecting a 1.4 times higher sensitivity of females than of males (LC50 = 127.75 µg/L Cd). The males of both species were similarly sensitive; however, the E. affinis females were 2.7 times more sensitive than the P. annandalei females. We also compared the sensitivity of ovigerous females (OVF) and non-ovigerous females (NOF) of both species to Cd. Mortality was higher in NOF than in OVF of both copepod species in both the control and the 40 µg/L Cd treatment. Finally, the total population, fecundity and female morphology of both copepod species were estimated after exposing one generation cycle (nauplius to adult) to 40 μg/L Cd (for E. affinis) and 160 μg/L Cd (for P. annandalei). A significant decrease in cohort production, survival and clutch size but no significant difference in the prosome length of both copepod species exposed to Cd were detected. The ratio of OVF:NOF was high in both copepod species exposed to Cd. Cd toxicity did not significantly affect the M:F sex ratio and % OVF of E. affinis. However, the effect of Cd toxicity in P. annandalei was significant in the M:F sex ratio and was in favor of females and their reproductive activities due to an increase in % OVF. Moreover, there was a significant decrease in total production of P. annandalei due to high mortality in their nauplii and copepodid developmental stages. Toxicity to Cd appears to be affected by multiple factors including sex, reproductive life stage and species. The ecological implication of Cd toxicity on E. affinis and P. annandalei copepod ecology is more related to a skewed sex ratio, low egg production, reduced hatchability and reduced survival that affects the recruitment potential of the copepod nauplii resulting in a decreasing copepod population. Mortality, reproduction and population growth of model species may provide important bio-indicators for environmental risk assessment.

Abstract

Cannibalism in copepod culture may limit its production yield and therefore affect the economic interests associated with the use of copepods as live feed in aquaculture. The effects of adult density, egg density, and algal availability were tested on the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa to understand how these parameters affect cannibalism rates on eggs. The overall cannibalism within the range of adult densities tested (120-1,000 adult L-1) was solely influenced by the egg and algal density, and not by the adult density. The increased densities of eggs lead to higher occurrences of cannibalism. Increasing the availability of alternative diets (e.g., algae) significantly diminished the adults' cannibalistic behavior. The highest cannibalistic rates per adult were observed at low densities of adults and high densities of eggs (120 ind L-1 and 20,000 eggs L-1, respectively) and resulted in consumption rates > 20 eggs ind(-1) h(-1). In this experiment, cannibalistic behavior reached 20 % of adult weight ind(-1) h(-1) under the aforementioned parameters. Additionally, the present study suggests that at high adult copepod density, the interactions between adults result in a decreased ``time to feed.'' Finally, it is argued that the separations of eggs from adult copepods, as well as the continuous access to an alternative food source, are necessary for decreasing the effects of cannibalism in copepod cultures.

International audience; In egg-bearing copepods, the ovigerous females are reported to be more vulnerable to predators. However, the underlying mechanistic details of increased vulnerability are not yet well understood. We studied the predator-prey interaction between the copepod prey Eurytemora affinis and a predator, post-larvae of the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax. Standard video techniques have been used to quantify the predation efficiency of larval sea bass and to record the two-dimensional swimming behavior of the different reproductive stages (males, non-ovigerous females and ovigerous females) of E. affinis in both the absence and presence of predators. Our results revealed that ovigerous females suffered higher mortality rates than either non-ovigerous females or males. Body size and swimming speed seemed to be the main determinants of prey conspicuousness to predators. In the light of published data, we conclude that acute vulnerability of E. affinis ovigerous females to planktivorous predators is not necessarily harmful at the population level.

Abstract

Trophic interactions between bacteria, viruses, and protozoan predators play crucial roles in structuring aquatic microbial communities and regulating microbe- mediated ecosystem functions (biogeochemical processes). In this microbial food web, protozoan predators and viruses share bacteria as a common resource, and protozoan pre- dators can kill viruses (intraguild predation (IGP)) and vice versa, even though these latter processes are probably of less importance. However, protozoan predators (IG pred- ator) and viruses (IG prey) generally occur together in various environments, and this cannot be fully explained by the classic IGP models. In addition, controlled experiments have often demonstrated that protozoan predators have apparently positive effects on viral activity. These sur- prising patterns can be explained by indirect interactions between them via induced trait changes in bacterial assemblages, which can be compared with trait-mediated indirect interactions (TMIIs) in terrestrial plant-insect systems. Here, we review some trait changes in bacterial assemblages that may positively affect the activities and abundance of viruses. It has been suggested that in bacte- rial assemblages, protozoan predation may enhance growth conditions for individual bacteria and induce both pheno- typic trait changes at the individual (e.g., filament-forming bacteria) and group level as a result of changes in bacterial community composition (e.g., species dominance). We discuss the specificities of aquatic microbial systems and attempt find functional similarities between aquatic microbial systems and terrestrial plant-insect systems with regard to TMII function.

Abstract

International audience; Genetic variation was examined in two complex cases of Indo-Pacific pygmy angelfishes (genus Centropyge; Pomacanthidae). The lemonpeel pygmy angelfish C. flavissima (Cuvier and Valenciennes) has a geographically disjunct Indian vs. Pacific distribution and the individuals from these two regions differ by their colour patterns. Previous research on C. flavissima has shown mitochondrial introgression from two related species, C. eibli in the eastern Indian Ocean and C. vrolikii in the Pacific Ocean. Using the 16S rDNA and the CO1 gene as phylogeographic markers, we found no mitochondrial haplotypes in common between Indian Ocean C. flavissima and C. eibli, confirming partial genetic isolation, albeit recent. Also, we found substantial genetic differences between Indian and Pacific C. flavissima populations at the nuclear ETS-2 intron locus. The Indian Ocean form of C. flavissima, thus geographically isolated by >2000 km distance from its Pacific Ocean counterpart, is described as a new species, Centropyge cocosensis sp. nov. Centropyge cocosensis sp. nov. differs in appearance from C. flavissima in having a conspicuous blue iris and a fainter, bluish eye ring. We also found that the yellow pygmy angelfish C. heraldi Woods and Schultz consists of two genetically distinct entities, one distributed widely in the northern tropical Indo-West Pacific, the other distributed in the southern Pacific Ocean. The name originally given to the blackfin pygmy angelfish, C. woodheadi Kuiter, is here resurrected to designate the latter.

Abstract

International audience; The Leopard whipray (Himantura leoparda) and Blue-spotted stingray (Neotrygon kuhlii) are distributed in the Indian and West Pacific Ocean and considered as species complexes based on morphological and molecular evidence. In this study, we used the next-generation sequencing method to decipher the two complete mitogenomes of H. leoparda and N. kuhlii. The assembled mitogenomes had a length of 17,690 bp in H. leoparda and 17,974 bp in N. kuhlii, and showed 78% identity to each other. Both mitogenomes had the typical vertebrate arrangement, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNAs genes and the non-coding control region. The control region, which was 1931-bp long in H. leoparda and 2243-bp long in N. kuhlii was located between the tRNA-Pro and tRNA-Phe loci. The overall GC content was 40.3% in H. leoparda and 39.8% in N. kuhlii. The complete mitogenome sequences of H. leoparda and N. kuhlii provide important molecular data for further phylogenetic and evolutionary analyses of these two stingray species complexes.

International audience; This paper is a compilation of notes on 110 fungal taxa, including one new family, 10 new genera, and 76 new species, representing a wide taxonomic and geographic range. The new family, Paradictyoarthriniaceae is introduced based on its distinct lineage in Dothideomycetes and its unique morphology. The family is sister to Biatriosporaceae and Roussoellaceae. The new genera are Allophaeosphaeria (Phaeosphaeriaceae), Amphibambusa (Amphisphaeriaceae), Brunneomycosphaerella (Capnodiales genera incertae cedis), Chaetocapnodium (Capnodiaceae), Flammeascoma (Anteagloniaceae), Multiseptospora (Pleosporales genera incertae cedis), Neogaeumannomyces (Magnaporthaceae), Palmiascoma (Bambusicolaceae), Paralecia (Squamarinaceae) and Sarimanas (Melanommataceae). The new Dothideomycete genera Pseudomassariosphaeria (Amniculicolaceae), Heracleicola, Neodidymella and Pseudomicrosphaeriopsis (Didymellaceae), Pseudopithomyces (Didymosphaeriaceae), Brunneoclavispora, Neolophiostoma and Sulcosporium (Halotthiaceae), Lophiohelichrysum (Lophiostomataceae), Galliicola, Populocrescentia and Vagicola (Phaeosphaeriaceae), Ascocylindrica (Ascocylindricaceae), Elongatopedicellata (Roussoellaceae), Pseudoasteromassaria (Latoruaceae) and Pseudomonodictys (Macrodiplodiopsidaceae) are introduced. In class Pezizomycetes, Helvella pseudolacunosa and Helvella rugosa (Helvellaceae) are introduced as new species. The new families, Dendrominiaceae and Neoantrodiellaceae (Basidiomycota) are introduced together with a new genus Neoantrodiella (Neoantrodiellaceae), here based on both morphology coupled with molecular data. In the class Agaricomycetes, Agaricus pseudolangei, Agaricus haematinus, Agaricus atrodiscus and Agaricus exilissimus (Agaricaceae), Amanita melleialba, Amanita pseudosychnopyramis and Amanita subparvipantherina (Amanitaceae), Entoloma calabrum, Cora barbulata, Dictyonema gomezianum and Inocybe granulosa (Inocybaceae), Xerocomellus sarnarii (Boletaceae), Cantharellus eucalyptorum, Cantharellus nigrescens, Cantharellus tricolor and Cantharellus variabilicolor (Cantharellaceae), Cortinarius alboamarescens, Cortinarius brunneoalbus, Cortinarius ochroamarus, Cortinarius putorius and Cortinarius seidlii (Cortinariaceae), Hymenochaete micropora and Hymenochaete subporioides (Hymenochaetaceae), Xylodon ramicida (Schizoporaceae), Colospora andalasii (Polyporaceae), Russula guangxiensis and Russula hakkae (Russulaceae), Tremella dirinariae, Tremella graphidis and Tremella pyrenulae (Tremellaceae) are introduced. Four new combinations Neoantrodiella gypsea, Neoantrodiella thujae (Neoantrodiellaceae), Punctulariopsis cremeoalbida, Punctulariopsis efibulata (Punctulariaceae) are also introduced here for the division Basidiomycota. Abstract

The Agulhas Bank region, south of Africa, is an oceanographically important and complex area. The leakage of warm saline Indian Ocean water into the South Atlantic around the southern tip of Africa is a crucial factor in the global thermohaline circulation. Foraminiferal assemblage, stable isotope and sedimentological data from the top 10 m of core MD962080, recovered from the western Agulhas Bank Slope, are used to indicate changes in water mass circulation in the southeastern South Atlantic for the last 450 kyr. Sedimentological and planktonic foraminiferal data give clear signals of cold water intrusions. The benthic stable isotope record provides the stratigraphic framework and indicates that the last four climatic cycles are represented (i.e. down to marine isotope stage (MIS) 12). The planktonic foraminiferal assemblages bear a clear transitional to subantarctic character with Globorotalia inflata and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (dextral) being the dominant taxa. Input of cold, subantarctic waters into the region by means of leakage through the Subtropical Convergence, as part of Agulhas ring shedding, and a general cooling of surface waters is suggested by increased occurrence of the subantarctic assemblage during glacial periods. Variable input of Indian Ocean waters via the Agulhas Current is indicated by the presence of tropical/subtropical planktonic foraminiferal species Globoquadrina dutertrei, Globigerinoides ruber (alba) and Globorotalia menardii with maximum leakage occurring at glacial terminations. The continuous presence of G. menardii throughout the core suggests that the exchange of water from the South Indian Ocean to the South Atlantic Ocean was never entirely obstructed in the last 450 kyr. The benthic carbon isotope record and sediment textural data reflect a change in bottom water masses over the core location from North Atlantic Deep Water to Upper Southern Component Water. Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages and sediment composition indicate a profound change in surface water conditions over the core site approximately 200–250 kyr BP, during MIS 7, from mixed subantarctic and transitional water masses to overall warmer surface water conditions.

Abstract

International audience; The flathead mullet, Mugil cephalus, is a commercially vital fish in fisheries and aquaculture worldwide. Genetic analyses have recently revealed three cryptic species of M. cephalus in the Northwest Pacific. These species are sympatric in Taiwanese waters and specific reproductive behaviors have been suggested to be a major prezygotic barrier. Species composition was evaluated in samples of M. cephalus at different growth stages collected from various habitats (offshore spawning ground, estuarine nursery and feeding areas) over several months or years. The gonadosomatic index of adults and the body length of juveniles were recorded to determine the reproductive season and recruitment periods in estuaries. The results revealed partially temporal spawning isolation between species pairs, spatial segregation on specific spawning grounds and strong philopatry preclude hybridization. Thus, the results imply that traditional fisheries of mature fish in the Taiwan Strait target only one species, whereas aquaculture in Taiwan contain juveniles of all three species collected in estuaries. The ecological niche and demography of these species must be investigated further to estimate the impact of juvenile sources on aquaculture.

Abstract

Many Asian aquaculture farms cultivate copepods as live-feed for aquaculture species, as copepod nutritional and behavioural qualities are usually higher than those of traditional live-feeds (i.e., Artemia and rotifers). The most convenient method to use zooplankton in aquaculture as live feed involves dormant eggs. In this study, to establish whether the copepod species of the tropical Taiwanese ponds exhibit quiescence of their eggs, several sediment samples were collected from the ponds and incubated at low temperature. After 3 months of cold incubation, several nauplii of Acartia bilobata Abraham, 1970 hatched from the sediment at high temperature over several days. Further investigations need to be conducted to understand the origin of the dormancy (i.e., induced originally in the field or in the laboratory). Nevertheless, it is the first reported case of dormant eggs in calanoid copepods in tropical regions. The present study will certainly find some interest in tropical aquaculture as our results showed that long-term storage of tropical calanoid copepod eggs is possible, even if collected directly from the sediment without sorting the eggs.

Abstract

International audience; A general model of species diversity predicts that the latter is maximized when productivity and disturbance are balanced. Based on this model, we hypothesized that the response of bacterial diversity to the ratio of viral to bacterial production (VP/BP) would be dome-shaped. In order to test this hypothesis, we obtained data on changes in bacterial communities (determined by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism of 16S rRNA gene) along a wide VP/BP gradient (more than two orders of magnitude), using seawater incubations from NW Mediterranean surface waters, i.e., control and treatments with additions of phosphate, viruses, or both. In December, one dominant Operational Taxonomic Unit accounted for the major fraction of total amplified DNA in the phosphate addition treatment (75 +/- 20%, +/- S.D.), but its contribution was low in the phosphate and virus addition treatment (23 +/- 19%), indicating that viruses prevented the prevalence of taxa that were competitively superior in phosphate-replete conditions. In contrast, in February, the single taxon predominance in the community was held in the phosphate addition treatment even with addition of viruses. We observed statistically robust dome-shaped response patterns of bacterial diversity to VP/BP, with significantly high bacterial diversity at intermediate VP/BP. This was consistent with our model-based hypothesis, indicating that bacterial production and viral-induced mortality interactively affect bacterial diversity in seawater.

Abstract

International audience; Deorphanization of GPR54 receptor a decade ago led to the characterization of the kisspeptin receptor (Kissr) in mammalsand the discovery of its major role in the brain control of reproduction. While a single gene encodes for Kissr in eutherianmammals including human, other vertebrates present a variable number of Kissr genes, from none in birds, one or two inteleosts, to three in an amphibian, xenopus. In order to get more insight into the evolution of Kissr gene family, weinvestigated the presence of Kissr in osteichthyans of key-phylogenetical positions: the coelacanth, a representative of earlysarcopterygians, the spotted gar, a non-teleost actinopterygian, and the European eel, a member of an early group ofteleosts (elopomorphs). We report the occurrence of three Kissr for the first time in a teleost, the eel. As measured byquantitative RT-PCR, the three eel Kissr were differentially expressed in the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis, and differentiallyregulated in experimentally matured eels, as compared to prepubertal controls. Subfunctionalisation, as shown by thesedifferences in tissue distribution and regulation, may have represented significant evolutionary constraints for theconservation of multiple Kissr paralogs in this species. Furthermore, we identified four Kissr in both coelacanth and spottedgar genomes, providing the first evidence for the presence of four Kissr in vertebrates. Phylogenetic and syntenic analysessupported the existence of four Kissr paralogs in osteichthyans and allowed to propose a clarified nomenclature of Kissr(Kissr-1 to -4) based on these paralogs. Syntenic analysis suggested that the four Kissr paralogs arose through the tworounds of whole genome duplication (1R and 2R) in early vertebrates, followed by multiple gene loss events in theactinopterygian and sarcopterygian lineages. Due to gene loss there was no impact of the teleost-specific whole genomeduplication (3R) on the number of Kissr paralogs in current teleosts.

Abstract

International audience; Copepod mating behavior can be broken down into several steps including search, encounter, pursuit, capture and copulation. Using optical systems, we examined the pre- and post-capture mating behavior for the little known subtropical species Pseudodiaptomusannandalei, living in the Danshuei estuary in northern Taiwan. During the mate-finding process, the male remotely located the female through water-born chemical signals released by the female. We found that, when placed into female-conditioned water, the displacement of males exhibited higher frequencies of swimming speeds over 20 mm s−1 and large displacements representing intensive search in restricted areas. Additionally, in presence of females, males responded to signals at a distance greater than 10 body lengths and raced up faithfully along diffusive chemical trails. P. annandalei males also used hydromechanical signals produced by females for close localization and final leap adjustment. The pursuits often resulted in encounters, but only a maximum of 50% of encounters led to copulation, due to rejection behavior by the females. To mate, males had to overcome intensely 'shaky' periods characterized by jumping alternating with strongly convoluted paths. Their chances to copulate increased with the time male maintained seizure of the female, which is helped by modified elements on both sides of the geniculation of their right antenna. Finally, copulation duration was estimated to last an average of 10 min. Rejection behavior by the female is another limitation in addition to the chance of an encounter in the success of the mating process. The possibility that females may perform rejection dance for matechoice is discussed.

This study investigated the feeding habits of whitefish (C. lavaretus L.) larvae in Lake Annecy (France) coupled with experimental behavioral studies in order to identify the underlying mechanisms of the ontogenetic shifts in the diet. The predatory behavior of wild larvae, and the escape responses of their zooplankton prey were both videorecorded in experimental tanks under controlled laboratory conditions. Ontogenetic diet patterns showed that young whitefish larvae have a preference for small cyclops, while older larvae selectively predate cladocerans. Our experimental observations showed that the capture success rate also varied in relation to ontogenetic development in fish. Young larvae were more successful in capturing small copepods, whereas old larvae were more successful in capturing Daphnia. In addition, the larvae were able to adjust their predatory behavior (speed, pursuit) according to the swimming pattern of the prey. These observations suggest that the selective predation on cladocerans observed in old larvae is the outcome of both active and passive choices depending on the escape swimming behavior of the prey, and handling time of the predator.

Abstract

International audience; The effectiveness of Quinone outside Inhibitor (QoI) fungicides against grape downy mildew in European vineyards has significantly decreased in the last decade. One nucleotide polymorphism, G143A in the cytochrome b gene of Plasmopara viticola, is involved in resistance to QoIs. Previous genetic examination on the mitochondrial genomes showed four major haplotypes (IR, IS, IIR, IIS) coexisting in European vineyards. A resistant allele (G143A) was present in IR and IIR haplotypes. The purpose of the present study was to estimate the diversity of the different mitochondrial haplotypes and their distribution in QoI-resistant populations before evaluating the potential cost of the resistant mutation G143A in P. viticola population. From 2000 to 2004, the frequencies of resistant isolates ranged from 0% to 23.25% with an average of 4.64 % among the populations examined. To evaluate the fitness of sensitive and resistant isolates, a comparison of different biological parameters including latent period, spore production and infection frequency was performed, enabling a fitness index (FI) to be determined. Resistant isolates exhibited greater infection frequency than sensitive isolates, whereas no significant difference was found in sporulation ability and latent period between sensitive and resistant isolates. To further investigate competitiveness among isolates, an assay including two resistant isolates in different proportion with a sensitive isolate was conducted on eight asexual growing cycles in the absence of a QoI fungicide. The competitiveness of resistant isolates varied according to their fitness parameters, suggesting that there is no noticeable cost of QoI resistance in controlled conditions in Plasmopara viticola.

Loci were developed for the following species: Anthocidaris crassispina, Aphis glycines, Argyrosomus regius, Astrocaryum sciophilum, Dasypus novemcinctus, Delomys sublineatus, Dermatemys mawii, Fundulus heteroclitus,Homalaspis plana, Jumellea rossii, Khaya senegalensis, Mugil cephalus, Neoceratitis cyanescens, Phalacrocorax aristotelis, Phytophthora infestans, Piper cordulatum, Pterocarpus indicus, Rana dalmatina, Rosa pulverulenta, Saxifraga oppositifolia, Scomber colias, Semecarpus kathalekanensis, Stichopus monotuberculatus, Striga hermonthica, Tarentola boettgeri and Thermophis baileyi. Abstract

Molecular Ecology Resources Primer Development Consortium: et al., This article documents the addition of 512 microsatellite marker loci and nine pairs of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) sequencing primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Alcippe morrisonia morrisonia, Bashania fangiana, Bashania fargesii, Chaetodon vagabundus, Colletes floralis, Coluber constrictor flaviventris, Coptotermes gestroi, Crotophaga major, Cyprinella lutrensis, Danaus plexippus, Fagus grandifolia, Falco tinnunculus, Fletcherimyia fletcheri, Hydrilla verticillata, Laterallus jamaicensis coturniculus, Leavenworthia alabamica, Marmosops incanus, Miichthys miiuy, Nasua nasua, Noturus exilis, Odontesthes bonariensis, Quadrula fragosa, Pinctada maxima, Pseudaletia separata, Pseudoperonospora cubensis, Podocarpus elatus, Portunus trituberculatus, Rhagoletis cerasi, Rhinella schneideri, Sarracenia alata, Skeletonema marinoi, Sminthurus viridis, Syngnathus abaster, Uroteuthis (Photololigo) chinensis, Verticillium dahliae, Wasmannia auropunctata, and Zygochlamys patagonica. These loci were cross-tested on the following species: Chaetodon baronessa, Falco columbarius, Falco eleonorae, Falco naumanni, Falco peregrinus, Falco subbuteo, Didelphis aurita, Gracilinanus microtarsus, Marmosops paulensis, Monodelphis Americana, Odontesthes hatcheri, Podocarpus grayi, Podocarpus lawrencei, Podocarpus smithii, Portunus pelagicus, Syngnathus acus, Syngnathus typhle,Uroteuthis (Photololigo) edulis, Uroteuthis (Photololigo) duvauceli and Verticillium albo-atrum. This article also documents the addition of nine sequencing primer pairs and sixteen allele specific primers or probes for Oncorhynchus mykiss and Oncorhynchus tshawytscha; these primers and assays were cross-tested in both species.

Abstract

We present a conceptual framework for a new approach to environmental calibration of planktonic foraminifer census counts. This approach is based on simultaneous application of a variety of transfer function techniques, which are trained on geographically constrained calibration data sets. It serves to minimise bias associated with the presence of cryptic species of planktonic foraminifera and provides an objective tool for assessing reliability of environmental estimates in fossil samples, allowing identification of adverse effects of no-analog faunas and technique-specific bias. We have compiled new calibration data sets for the North (N=862) and South (N=321) Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean (N=1111). We show evidence that these data sets offer adequate coverage of the Sea-Surface Temperature (SST) and faunal variation range and that they are not affected by the presence of pre-Holocene samples and/or calcite dissolution. We have applied four transfer function techniques, including Artificial Neural Networks, Revised Analog Method and SIMMAX (with and without distance weighting) on faunal counts in a Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) data set for the Atlantic Ocean (748 samples in 167 cores; based on the GLAMAP-2000 compilation) and a new data set for the Pacific Ocean (265 samples in 82 cores) and show that three of these techniques provide adequate degree of independence for the advantage of a multi-technique approach to be realised. The application of our new approach to the glacial Pacific lends support to the contraction and perhaps even a cooling of the Western Pacific Warm Pool and a substantial (>3 °C) cooling of the eastern equatorial Pacific and the eastern boundary currents. Our results do not provide conclusive evidence for LGM warming anywhere in the Pacific. The Atlantic reconstruction shows a number of robust patterns, including substantial cooling of eastern boundary currents with considerable advection of subpolar waters into the Benguela Current, a cooling of the equatorial Atlantic by ∼5 °C, and steep SST gradients in the mid-latitude North Atlantic. The transfer function techniques generally agree that subtropical gyre areas in both hemispheres did not change significantly since the LGM, although the ANN technique produced glacial SST in the southern gyre 1–2 °C warmer than today. We have revisited the issue of sea-ice occurrence in the Nordic Seas and using the distribution of subpolar species of planktonic foraminifera in glacial samples, we conclude that the Norwegian Sea must have been ice-free during the summer.
