In the verification procedure carried out on 15 Oct 2022, the Specialized Prosecutor for Environmental Matters (FEMA) of Nauta-Loreto confirmed that the oil spill that spread through the Cuninico River and reached the Maranon River was the result of an intentional cutting performed by third parties. In the inspection and verification tasks carried out at kilometre 42+092 of Section I of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP), in the district of Urarinas, province and region of Loreto, representatives of the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining also participated - Osinergmin and the Port Authority and Coast Guard Directorate - DICAPI Iquitos. As recorded in the Osinergmin Field Inspection Act, the authorities of the aforementioned entities confirmed the existence of a 19 cm cut through the pipe, with a 4 mm opening, through which the oil leak occurred that caused the environmental contingency. Likewise, they recorded that this and five other additional cuts that, unlike the first, did not manage to perforate the pipe, have been made with a mechanical element maneuvered by unidentified persons. Prior to the official diligence, the pipe was raised above the water level of the flotation channel with the help of wooden structures called porticos, since it was 40 cm submerged. Subsequently, and in the presence of the authorities, the metal staple that was placed on 16 Sep 2022 to contain the leak of crude oil was removed. As recalled, Petroperu acted immediately by sealing the spill point with the placement of a metal staple the same day it became aware of the event and began hydrocarbon containment and recovery work and initial cleanup. It should be noted that, from Dec 2021 to date, the ONP has suffered 11 attacks with more than 50 intentional cuts, all of these have been confirmed and are being investigated by the National Police of Peru and the Public Ministry. S. Gulf of Mexico, pink shrimp, Farfantepenaeus duorarum, catch statistics have been collected by NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, or its predecessor agency, for over 50 years. Recent events, including hurricanes and oil spills within the ecosystem of the fishery, have shown that documentation of these catch data is of primary importance. Fishing effort for this stock has fluctuated over the 50-year period analyzed, ranging from 3,376 to 31,900 days fished, with the most recent years on record, 2008 and 2009, exhibiting declines up to 90% relative to the high levels recorded in the mid 1990's. Our quantification of F. duorarum landings and catch rates (CPUE) indicates catch have been below the long-term average of about 12 million lb for all of the last 10 years on record. In contrast to catch and effort, catch rates have increased in recent years, with record CPUE levels measured in 2008 and 2009, of 1,340 and 1,144 lb per day fished, respectively. Our regression results revealed catch was dependent upon fishing effort (F=[98.48.sub.df=1, 48], p < 0.001, [r.sup.2]=0.67), (Catch=1,623,378 + (520) X (effort)). High CPUE's measured indicate stocks were not in decline prior to 2009, despite the decline in catch. The decrease in catch is attributed in large part to low effort levels caused by economical and not biological or habitat related conditions. An oil spill began approximately 6.5 miles southeast of Santa Barbara, CA, on Jan 28, 1969, and ended in Apr 1969. An additional spill occurred in Dec 1969. The effects of the spills on the abundance of three pelagic species, the northern anchovy, the Pacific bonito and the jack mackerel, were studied. The results indicated that the abundance of the jack mackerel and the Pacific bonito was affected in the short term, but the abundance of the anchovy remained fairly stable between 1968 and 1971.

The United States Department of Justice has launched a civil and criminal investigation into the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The agency is working with attorneys general and US attorneys from the affected coastlines. Federal laws reviewed include the Clean Water Act, the 1990 Oil Pollution Act and the Endangered Species Act.
