BACKGROUND The development of regenerative therapy for human spinal cord injury (SCI) is dramatically restricted by two main challenges: the need for a safe source of functionally active and reproducible neural stem cells and the need of adequate animal models for preclinical testing. Direct reprogramming of somatic cells into neuronal and glial precursors might be a promising solution to the first challenge. The use of non-human primates for preclinical studies exploring new treatment paradigms in SCI results in data with more translational relevance to human SCI. AIM To investigate the safety and efficacy of intraspinal transplantation of directly reprogrammed neural precursor cells (drNPCs). METHODS Seven non-human primates with verified complete thoracic SCI were divided into two groups: drNPC group (n = 4) was subjected to intraspinal transplantation of 5 million drNPCs rostral and caudal to the lesion site 2 wk post injury, and lesion control (n = 3) was injected identically with the equivalent volume of vehicle. RESULTS Follow-up for 12 wk revealed that animals in the drNPC group demonstrated a significant recovery of the paralyzed hindlimb as well as recovery of somatosensory evoked potential and motor evoked potential of injured pathways. Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging data confirmed the intraspinal transplantation of drNPCs did not adversely affect the morphology of the central nervous system or cerebrospinal fluid circulation. Subsequent immunohistochemical analysis showed that drNPCs maintained SOX2 expression characteristic of multipotency in the transplanted spinal cord for at least 12 wk, migrating to areas of axon growth cones. CONCLUSION Our data demonstrated that drNPC transplantation was safe and contributed to improvement of spinal cord function after acute SCI, based on neurological status assessment and neurophysiological recovery within 12 wk after transplantation. The functional improvement described was not associated with neuronal differentiation of the allogeneic drNPCs. Instead, directed drNPCs migration to the areas of active growth cone formation may provide exosome and paracrine trophic support, thereby further supporting the regeneration processes.

Background This study aimed to describe the incidence, clinical characteristics, and prognosis of lung cancer patients with synchronous bone metastasis (SBM) and to analyze the prognostic factors of the lung cancer patients with SBM. Methods A total of 15,716 lung cancer patients who were diagnosed between 2009 to 2018 in the Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Among them, patients with SBM were checked. Both the demographic and clinical characteristics were included as follows: age, gender, marital status, history of smoking, alcohol consumption, family history of tumor, Karnofsky score, lymph node metastasis, histological type. Besides, laboratory data such as alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, carcinoembryonic antigen, squamous cell carcinoma antigen, cytokeratin-19 fragment, and neuron specific enolase were also included. The log-rank test and multivariate Cox regression analysis were employed to reveal the potential prognostic predictors. A further analysis using the Kaplan–Meier was employed to demonstrate the difference on the prognosis of LC patients between adenocarcinoma and non-adenocarcinoma. Results Among the included patients, 2738 patients (17.42%) were diagnosed with SBM. A total of 938 patients (34.3%) with SBM were successfully followed and the median survival was 11.53 months (95%CI: 10.57–12.49 months), and the 1-, 2-, and 5-year overall survival rate was 51, 17, and 8%, respectively. Multivariable Cox regression results showed history of smoking and high level of NSE were associated with the poor prognosis, while adenocarcinoma histological type was associated with better survival. Conclusion The prevalence of SBM in lung cancer is relatively high with poor survival. The lung cancer patients with SBM showed diverse prognosis. Among all the pathological types, the division of adenocarcinoma suggested different prognosis of the lung cancer patients with SBM. The present study emphasized the importance of pathological diagnosis on prognostic determinants in lung cancer patients with SBM.

Accumulation of liposomal drugs into human tumors has substantial variability influencing the probability of positive response to the therapy. Therefore, it becomes very important to identify the eligibility of patients for various treatment options. The existing strategies of tumor stratification using companion diagnostics are based on the assumption that the initial and subsequent doses of nanoparticles (NP) behave in a sufficiently similar manner to enable a valuable prognosis. Here, we use a combination of in vivo imaging techniques to validate the applicability of magnetic liposomes (ML) as a reliable tool to predict whether or not the tumor would respond to nanomedicine therapy. The results demonstrated that liposome biodistribution, interactions with immune cells, and extravasation behavior in tumors were not affected by the pretreatment with liposomes 24 h prior to the repeat dosing. Co-administration of liposomal doxorubicin (DXR) and liposomes loaded with maghemite NP resulted in a high colocalization rate between two nanomedicines in tumors suggesting that neither contrast agent, nor chemotherapeutics altered biodistribution of liposomes. Based on magnetic resonance imaging of 4T1 tumors performed before and 6 h after ML treatment, animals were classified into high and low accumulation subgroups. Higher ML deposition in tumors was associated with a reduction in lesion size and enhanced survival in animals treated with liposomal DXR, but not with DXR alone. Given that liposomes are the most numerous class of clinically approved nanomedicines the development of safe and cost-effective liposomal companion diagnostic suitable for non-invasive imaging is of paramount importance for improving the efficacy of cancer therapy.

Objective The aim of this study was to examine the survival rate of patients with different bone sarcomas and to investigate homogenous and heterogenous prognostic factors for different types of bone sarcomas. Methods This is a retrospective analysis of records from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result (SEER) database. Clear information on the distant metastasis of cancer is provided in the SEER database for patients diagnosed between January 2010 and December 2016. Data for the four types of malignant bone sarcomas were extracted, including osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, and chordoma. Patients with bone sarcomas originated from other sites, diagnosed at autopsy, or indicated in death certification were excluded. The overall survival was calculated for the entire cohort and across different bone sarcomas using the Kaplan–Meier method. A subgroup analysis of the different survival rates of four types of bone sarcomas in various levels of each variable was conducted and the differences were tested with the log‐rank test. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was performed to determine the prognostic factors. Variables with P, Patients with chordoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, and osteosarcoma showed homogenous and heterogenous clinicopathological characteristics, survival rates, and prognostic factors, which can potentially guide sarcoma‐specific prediction and treatments.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are a type of soft tissue sarcomas (STS) with recurrence and metastatic potential. We aimed to investigate the risk factors for developing distant metastases (DM) and to identify the prognostic factors in patients with DM. Based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result (SEER) database, MPNST patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2016 were extracted in our study. The logistic regression model was performed for predicting DM development while the Cox proportional hazard regression model was conducted for revealing the prognostic factors. Eventually, 764 patients diagnosed with MPNSTs were included with 109 cases presenting with metastases at initial diagnosis. Larger tumor size and lymph node metastases were independent risk factors for developing DM. The median overall survival (OS) for patients with metastases was 8.0 (95% CI: 6.1–9.9) months. Multiple metastatic sites and no surgical treatment were prognostic factors for worse survival. Tumors located in non-head and neck region were related with better survival. The incidence of DM was 14.3% with a dismal median OS of 8.0 months for metastatic MPNSTs. More evaluation should be applied for patients with large tumor size and lymph metastases. Tumors located in head and neck region and the presence of multiple metastases predicted worse survival outcome. Surgical treatment can significantly improve the survival of MPNST patients with distant metastasis.

This study aimed to develop a model that fused multiple features (multi-feature fusion model) for predicting metachronous distant metastasis (DM) in breast cancer (BC) based on clinicopathological characteristics and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A nomogram based on clinicopathological features (clinicopathological-feature model) and a nomogram based on the multi-feature fusion model were constructed based on BC patients with DM (n=67) and matched patients (n=134) without DM. DM was diagnosed on average (17.31±13.12) months after diagnosis. The clinicopathological-feature model included seven features: reproductive history, lymph node metastasis, estrogen receptor status, progesterone receptor status, CA153, CEA, and endocrine therapy. The multi-feature fusion model included the same features and an additional three MRI features (multiple masses, fat-saturated T2WI signal, and mass size). The multi-feature fusion model was relatively better at predicting DM. The sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy and AUC of the multi-feature fusion model were 0.746 (95% CI: 0.623-0.841), 0.806 (0.727-0.867), 0.786 (0.723-0.841), and 0.854 (0.798-0.911), respectively. Both internal and external validations suggested good generalizability of the multi-feature fusion model to the clinic. The incorporation of MRI factors significantly improved the specificity and sensitivity of the nomogram. The constructed multi-feature fusion nomogram may guide DM screening and the implementation of prophylactic treatment for BC.

We aimed to perform a pan-metastatic cancer analysis on survival and prognostic factors and to create a prognosis-based classification system. We selected distant metastasis patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The associations between the characteristics of the patients at admission and overall survival were determined. A prognosis-based metastatic cancer classification was established based on the identified prognostic factors. The differences in prognosis among these categories were tested. The survival rate and prognostic factors were not consistent across cancers. Three metastatic cancer categories were generated, each with different prognoses. The prognostic differences among the categories were satisfactorily validated. Different metastatic cancer types had homogeneous and heterogeneous survival rates and prognostic factors. A prognosis-based classification system for synchronous distant metastasis cancer patients at admission was created. This classification system reflects the grade of malignancy in metastatic cancers and may guide the prediction of survival and individualized treatment. Moreover, it may have important implications for the management of synchronous metastatic cancers and aid clinicians in properly allocating medical resources to metastatic patients.

In experiments on rats, co-transplantation of olfactory ensheathing cells of the human olfactory mucosa and neural stem/progenitor cells from the same source into post-traumatic cysts of the spinal cord led to improvement of the motor activity of the hind limbs and reduced the size of the cysts in some animals by 4-12%. The transplantation of a combination of the olfactory mucosa cells is effective and can be used in preclinical trials for the treatment of spinal cord injuries.

Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the early mortality rate and associated factors for early death in bone and soft tissue tumors, and to construct predictive nomogram. Methods: Patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) dataset were enrolled. The early death (survival time ≤ 3 months) rate was calculated and associated risk factors were evaluated by the logistic regression models. The significant factors were used to construct predictive nomograms. Results: A total of 2,003 (8.5%) patients died within 3 months after cancer diagnosis, among whom 1,146 (4.9%) patients died from cancer-specific cause. Older age (19-50 and >50 years), grade (III and IV), reginal or distant stage were associated with higher odds of total, cancer-specific and non-cancer-specific early death. T2 stage, metastasis to brain and lung were risk factors for total and cancer-specific early death. Surgical interventions significantly decreased the odds of total, cancer-specific and non-cancer-specific early death. Female and black race were associated with lower odds of non-cancer-specific early death. The area under the curve (AUC) of the nomograms for total early death, cancer-specific and non-cancer-specific early death prediction was 88.0%, 89.0% and 83.2%, respectively. Conclusions: A total of 8.5% patients with bone and soft tissue tumors suffered early death. Several risk factors were associated with higher odds of early death while surgery can decrease the possibility of early death. Nomograms based on all related factors can be used to estimate the early death in bone and soft tissue tumors.

Enriched cultures of olfactory ensheathing cells and neural stem/progenitor cells were obtained according to our developed protocols from the olfactory mucosa of rat and human. It has been shown that only transplantation of human and rat olfactory ensheathing cells leads to a significant decrease in the size of cysts, as well as their complete disappearance in some animals.

Rationale: Treatment of Parkinson's disease has been by now symptomatic. The literature on the efficacy and side effects of levodopa has been contradictory. Some authors mention an anti-depressant effect of the agent, while others believe that it is exactly levodopa that eventually induces the occurrence of depressive symptoms.Aim: To reproduce the OHDA-hemiparkinsonism rat model with subsequent assessment of both external and structural manifestations of the disorder, as well as to study the efficacy of levodopa for motor and non-motor symptoms of parkinsonism.Materials and methods: The study was performed in 52 male Wistar rats. The disease model included stereotaxic administration of neurotoxic 6-OHDA into the pars compacta of the substantia nigra. At 2 months after the administration, the animals underwent test for motor (Rotarod, cylinder, ketamine-induced rotation in the rotometer) and non-motor abnormalities (open field, social interest, conditioned escape response).Results: In 18% of the animals no hemiparkinsonism symptoms were found. 32% of rats had only motor symptoms, whereas in 50% of the animals both motor and non-motor symptoms were noted. Levodopa could partially correct the motor abnormalities, with augmentation of depressive-like behavior.Conclusion: Levodopa has shown its partial efficacy in correction of the motor symptoms caused by administration of 6-OHDA neurotoxin; however, it caused such side effects as augmentation of depressive-like behavior and anxiety.

We studied the efficiency of transplantation of neural stem/progenitor cells from human olfactory mucosa in chronic spinal cord injury. Neural stem/progenitor cells were obtained by a protocol modified by us and transplanted to rats with spinal post-traumatic cysts. It was shown that transplantation of neural stem/progenitor cells from human olfactory lining improved motor activity of hind limbs in the recipient rat with spinal post-traumatic cysts (according to BBB scale).

Depression is a serious mental disorder that affects more than 300 million people worldwide. Due to the lack of effective treatment methods, the pathogenesis of depression is necessary to study in order to understand its development and find new therapies. The review describes the main mechanisms of depression, including the monoamine hypothesis, impairment of the hipotalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, decreased production of neurotropic factors, and neuroinflammation. Genetic correlations, gene polymorphisms, and epigenetic mechanisms are also considered. Common and different features of the etiology are analyzed for depression and depressive conditions associated with other pathologies (schizophrenia, Parkinson disease, and Alzheimer's disease). Modern experimental methods used to investigate the molecular mechanisms of depressive conditions are described with a focus on gene knockouts in laboratory animals and the CRISPR/Cas technology. Consideration is given to optogenetic and chemogenetic methods and analyses of genetic polymorphisms and their combinations. The data may provide for a better integral understanding of the modern ideas about the pathogenesis of depression as an isolated or comorbid disorder and the prospects in studying the mechanisms of depressive conditions.

Aim. Neural progenitor cells (NPC) are used for the development of cell therapies of neurological diseases. Their stereotaxic transplantation in the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model imitating ischemic stroke results in symptom aleviation. However, exploration of less invasive transplantation options is essential, because stereotaxic transplantation is a complex procedure and can be applied to humans only by vital indications in a specialized neurological ward. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of cell therapy of the experimental ischemic stroke by the intra-arterial transplantation of NPC.Materials and methods. NPC for transplantation (IPSC-NPC) were derived by two-stage differentiation of cells of a stable line of human induced pluripotent stem cells. Stroke modeling in rats was carried out by transitory 90 min endovascular MCAO by a silicon-tipped filament. NPC were transplanted 24 hours after MCAO. Repetitive magnetic resonance tomography of experimental animals was made with the Bruker BioSpin ClinScan tomograph with 7 Tl magnetic field induction. Animal survival rate and neurological deficit (using mNSS standard stroke severity scale) were evaluated at the 1st (before IPSC-NPC transplantation), 7th and 14th day after transplantation. Histological studies were carried out following standard protocols.Results. Intra-arterial transplantation of 7 × 105 IPSC-NPC in 1 ml at a constant 100 l/min rate in case of secured blood flow through the internal carotid artery did not cause brain capillary embolism, additional cytotoxic brain tissue edemas or other complications, while inducing increase of animal survival rate and enhanced revert of the neurological deficit. IPSC-NPC accumulation in brain after intra-arterial infusion was demonstrated. Some cells interacted with the capillary endothelium and probably penetrated through the blood-brain barrier.Conclusion. Therapeutic efficacy of the systemic, intra-arterial administration of NPC in ischemic stroke has been experimentally proven. A method of secure intra-arterial infusion of cell material into the internal carotid artery middle in rats has been developed and tested.

Background: Molecular mechanisms of depression remain unclear. The brain metabolome after antidepressant therapy is poorly understood and had not been performed for different routes of drug administration before the present study. Rats were exposed to chronic ultrasound stress and treated with intranasal and intraperitoneal clomipramine. We then analyzed 28 metabolites in the frontal cortex and hippocampus. Methods: Rats’ behavior was identified in such tests: social interaction, sucrose preference, forced swim, and Morris water maze. Metabolic analysis was performed with liquid chromatography. Results: After ultrasound stress pronounced depressive-like behavior, clomipramine had an equally antidepressant effect after intranasal and intraperitoneal administration on behavior. Ultrasound stress contributed to changes of the metabolomic pathways associated with pathophysiology of depression. Clomipramine affected global metabolome in frontal cortex and hippocampus in a different way that depended on the route of administration. Intranasal route was associated with more significant changes of metabolites composition in the frontal cortex compared to the control and ultrasound groups while the intraperitoneal route corresponded with more profound changes in hippocampal metabolome compared to other groups. Since far metabolic processes in the brain can change in many ways depending on different routes of administration, the antidepressant therapy should also be evaluated from this point of view.

Cell therapy is an emerging approach to stroke treatment with a potential to limit brain damage and enhance its restoration after the acute phase of the disease. In this study we tested directly reprogrammed neural precursor cells (drNPC) derived from adult human bone marrow cells in the rat middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model of acute ischemic stroke using human placenta mesenchymal stem cells (pMSC) as a positive control with previously confirmed efficacy. Cells were infused into the ipsilateral (right) internal carotid artery of male Wistar rats 24 h after MCAO. The main goal of this work was to evaluate real-time distribution and subsequent homing of transplanted cells in the brain. This was achieved by performing intra-arterial infusion directly inside the MRI scanner and allowed transplanted cells tracing starting from their first pass through the brain vessels. Immediately after transplantation, cells were observed in the periphery of the infarct zone and in the brain stem, 15 min later small numbers of cells could be discovered deep in the infarct core and in the contralateral hemisphere, where drNPC were seen earlier and in greater numbers than pMSC. Transplanted cells in both groups could no longer be detected in the rat brain 48–72 h after infusion. Histological and histochemical analysis demonstrated that both the drNPC and pMSC were localized inside blood vessels in close contact with the vascular wall. No passage of labeled cells through the blood brain barrier was observed. Additionally, the therapeutic effects of drNPC and pMSC were compared. Both drNPC and pMSC induced substantial attenuation of neurological deficits evaluated at the 7th and 14th day after transplantation using the modified neurological severity score (mNSS). Some of the effects of drNPC and pMSC, such as the influence on the infarct volume and the survival rate of animals, differed. The results suggest a paracrine mechanism of the positive therapeutic effects of IA drNPC and pMSC infusion, potentially enhanced by the cell-cell interactions. Our data also indicate that the long-term homing of transplanted cells in the brain is not necessary for the brain’s functional recovery.

Depression is a global threat to mental health that affects around 264 million people worldwide. Despite the considerable evolution in our understanding of the pathophysiology of depression, no reliable biomarkers that have contributed to objective diagnoses and clinical therapy currently exist. The discovery of the microbiota-gut-brain axis induced scientists to study the role of gut microbiota (GM) in the pathogenesis of depression. Over the last decade, many of studies were conducted in this field. The productions of metabolites and compounds with neuroactive and immunomodulatory properties among mechanisms such as the mediating effects of the GM on the brain, have been identified. This comprehensive review was focused on low molecular weight compounds implicated in depression as potential products of the GM. The other possible mechanisms of GM involvement in depression were presented, as well as changes in the composition of the microbiota of patients with depression. In conclusion, the therapeutic potential of functional foods and psychobiotics in relieving depression were considered. The described biomarkers associated with GM could potentially enhance the diagnostic criteria for depressive disorders in clinical practice and represent a potential future diagnostic tool based on metagenomic technologies for assessing the development of depressive disorders.

Neuropsychiatric diseases are one of the main causes of disability, affecting millions of people. Various drugs are used for its treatment, although no effective therapy has been found yet. The blood brain barrier (BBB) significantly complicates drugs delivery to the target cells in the brain tissues. One of the problem-solving methods is the usage of nanocontainer systems. In this review we summarized the data about nanoparticles drug delivery systems and their application for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. Firstly, we described and characterized types of nanocarriers: inorganic nanoparticles, polymeric and lipid nanocarriers, their advantages and disadvantages. We discussed ways to interact with nerve tissue and methods of BBB penetration. We provided a summary of nanotechnology-based pharmacotherapy of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorder and Alzheimer’s disease, where development of nanocontainer drugs derives the most active. We described various experimental drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease that include vector nanocontainers targeted on β-amyloid or tau-protein. Integrally, nanoparticles can substantially improve the drug delivery as its implication can increase BBB permeability, the pharmacodynamics and bioavailability of applied drugs. Thus, nanotechnology is anticipated to overcome the limitations of existing pharmacotherapy of psychiatric disorders and to effectively combine various treatment modalities in that direction.

Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cancer burden, and prognosis is determined by many demographic and clinicopathologic factors. The present study aimed to construct a prognostic nomogram for colorectal cancer patients with distant metastasis. Methods Colorectal cancer patients with distant metastasis diagnosed between 2010 and 2016 were selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to identify independent prognostic factors. A nomogram was constructed to predict survival, and validation was performed. Results A total of 7099 stage IV colorectal cancer patients were enrolled in the construction cohort. The median overall survival was 20.0 (95% CI 19.3–20.7) months. Age at diagnosis, marital status, race, primary tumour site, tumour grade, CEA level, T stage, N stage, presence of bone, brain, liver and lung metastasis, surgery for primary site and performance of chemotherapy were independent prognostic factors. The nomogram was constructed and the calibration curve showed satisfactory agreement. The C-index was 0.742 (95% CI 0.726–0.758). In the validation cohort (7098 patients), the nomogram showed satisfactory discrimination and calibration with a C-index of 0.746 (95% CI 0.730–0.762). Conclusion A series of factors associated with the survival of CRC patients with distant metastasis were found. Based on the identified factors, a nomogram was generated to predict the survival of stage IV colorectal cancer patients. The predictive model showed satisfactory discrimination and calibration, which can provide a reference for survival estimation and individualized treatment decisions.

BACKGROUND The early death of patients is a global cancer issue. We aimed to identify the risk factors for early death in stage IV breast cancer. Predictive nomograms for early death evaluation were generated based on the risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS Based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, patients diagnosed with IV breast cancer were selected. The risk factors for early death (survival time ≤1 year) were identified using logistic regression model analysis. Predictive nomograms were constructed and internal validation was performed. RESULTS A total of 5998 (32.6%) breast cancer patients were diagnosed as early death in the construction cohort. Age older than 50 years, unmarried status, black race, uninsured status, triple-negative type, grade (II and III), tumor size >5 cm, and metastasis to lung, liver, and brain were risk factors for total early death, while Luminal B subtype, N1 stage, and surgical interventions were associated with lower risk of early death. As for cancer-specific and non-cancer-specific early death, several factors were not consistent between the 2 groups. Nomograms for all-cause, cancer-specific, and non-cancer-specific early death were constructed. The calibration curve showed satisfactory agreement. The areas under the ROC curve (AUC) were 78.3% (95% CI: 77.7-78.9%), 75.8% (75.1-76.4%), and 72.3% (71.6-72.9%), respectively. In the validation cohort, a total of 689 (19.3%) patients were diagnosed as early death and the calibration curve showed satisfactory agreement. The AUCs of the all-cause, cancer-specific, and non-cancer-specific early death prediction were 74.0% (95% CI: 72.5-75.4%), 73.5% (72.0-74.9%), and 68.6% (67.0-70.1%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Nomograms were generated to predict early death, with good calibration and discrimination. The predictive model can provide a reference for identifying cases with high risk of early death among stage IV breast cancer patients and play an auxiliary role in guiding individual treatment.

BACKGROUND The objective of the present research was to explore the prevalence, risk, and prognostic factors associated with bone metastases (BM) in newly diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS From 36 507 HCC patients who were registered in Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, we enrolled 1263 with BM at the initial diagnosis of HCC from 2010 to 2014. Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests were used to estimate overall survival for different subgroups. Univariate and multivariate logistic and Cox regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors and independent prognostic factors for BM. RESULTS A total of 1567 (4.29%) HCC patients were detected with BM at initial diagnosis. Male sex, unmarried status, higher T stage, lymph node involvement, intrahepatic metastases, and extrahepatic metastases (lung or brain) were positively associated with BM. The median survival of the patients was 3.00 months (95% CI: 2.77-3.24 months). Marital status and primary tumor surgery were independently associated with the better survival. CONCLUSIONS A list of factors associated with BM occurrence and the prognosis of the advanced HCC patients with BM were found. These associated factors may provide a reference for BM screening in HCC and guide prophylactic treatment in clinical settings.

Background: Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the most common malignancies in women. Advanced bone metastases (BM) commonly result in the poor prognosis. We aim to evaluate the prevalence and associated factors for the de novo BM development and prognosis in OC. Materials and methods: The present study was a cohort study that used the United States based National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. SEER documented OC patients, diagnosed between 2010 and 2015, were included in the present study. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed to identify associated factors for BM development. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to estimate the overall survival and multivariable proportional hazard regression was used to identify the prognostic factors for OC patients with BM. Results: A total of 32,178 eligible OC patients were included in the present study, the prevalence of de novo BM was 1.09% (N=352). Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (LGMS) is a rare entity with a predilection for the head and neck. There are still no optimal treatment strategies for patients with LGMS. We retrospectively investigated the efficacies of chemotherapy and radiation treatment for patients with LGMS. We obtained data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result (SEER) database for 96 patients diagnosed with LGMS between 2001 and 2015. We used Kaplan–Meier curves and log-rank tests to estimate overall survival (OS) and Cox proportional hazard regression to identify prognostic factors. The median age of the patients was 55.0 years. Twenty-two of the patients had LGMS in the head and neck region. Of the 96 patients, 86 (89.6%) received surgical treatment, 28 (29.2%) received radiation treatment, and 20 (10.4%) received chemotherapy. The mean OS was 125.2 [95% confidence interval (CI) 106.3–144.2] months. The 1, 3, 5, and 10-year OS rates were 88%, 77%, 70%, and 59%, respectively. Age greater than 60 years, positive nodal status, and no surgical treatment were independent prognostic factors for patients with LGMS, whereas chemotherapy and radiation treatment were not. Surgical resection is the most effective therapy for LGMS. Chemotherapy and radiation had limited effects on survival improvement for patients with LGMS. Therefore, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy should not be routinely performed in LGMS, especially for those with negative margins after surgery.

The first stage of Parkinson's disease pathogenesis is the prodromal phase, which characterized by absence of motor impairments, but development of depression in numerous cases. To improve the course of the disease, it is important to diagnose and start treatment with early stage.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a traumatic injury to the spinal cord which is not a consequence of the disease. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have gradually become one of the most used stem cells in research and clinic trial. Based on the previous reports employed the cells ranged from 4 • 105 to 1 • 106, the present study was performed to figure out the best number of MSCs for transplantation of the chronic SCI. Magnetic nanoparticles were used for proving the precise transplantation strategy. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), diffusion tensor tractography (DTT), and behavior testing evaluations, we focused the effect of varying numbers of MSCs on reducing lesion cavity and post–traumatic syrinx formation, suppressing glial scar formation, enhancing neuronal fibers remodeling, promoting axonal regeneration and sprouting, improving vascularization, ameliorating the neuronal factors expressional level, and function improvement. Magnetic nanoparticles were precisely transplanted into the post–traumatic syrinx (PTS). MSCs can restore function after chronic SCI through stimulating the regeneration and sprouting of the axons, reducing the formation of PTS. The effect of MSCs on PTS management and functional improvement post chronic SCI was cell number–dependent, and within the range of 4 • 105 to 1 • 106, 1 • 106 cells were proved to be the best dose.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely used to diagnose cancer and study patterns and effectiveness of nanocarrier delivery of anticancer drugs. Accumulation of nanoparticles in a tumor varies widely in a given population; it is also highly dependent on biological factors, which remain largely unstudied. In recent years, there was developed a hypothesis that suggests that MRI can be used to predict response to nanoformulations-based anticancer therapy since it provides data on accumulation of MRI contrast agents in the tumor. Pilot tests prove feasibility of the approach based on this hypothesis, however, there is a number of conceptual and technical problems and limitations that hamper its introduction into the routine clinical practice. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of methods to stratify tumors by level of nanoparticles accumulation. Further research in this field would facilitate development of effective algorithms of personalized treatment with anticancer drugs delivered by nanoparticles.

In the late stages of their development, cancers can form metastases. Formation of metastases was found to be associated with the capacity of cancer cells to quit the tumor mass and journey through the circulation to distant organs. This cell population is called circulating tumor cells (CTCs). They exhibit several advanced properties such as epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and dormancy that are essential for supporting their survival in the bloodstream, radio- and chemoresistance, their escape from the anti-cancer immune response, and metastasis initiation. CTCs, and especially dormant tumor cells, are responsible for post-surgery tumor recurrence. CTCs were detected in the blood of patients affected with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM)-the most frequent, invasive, and deadly neoplasm among primary brain tumors. The identification of glioblastoma CTCs might have a promising clinical potential for early tumor diagnosis and prognosis. A variety of CTC enrichment and detection techniques have been developed to date. For several epithelial cancers, especially for breast carcinoma, a prognostic value of CTCs was reported. Similar efforts should be performed for GBM to evaluate clinical the significance of CTCs.

We evaluated the efficacy of rat olfactory ensheathing cells in the therapy of experimental cysts of the spinal cord. Improvement of the motor function of the hind limbs after transplantation of the olfactory ensheathing cells into the posttraumatic spinal cord cysts rats was found. We also determined the required number of cells for transplantation and demonstrated a neuroprotective effect of this dosage. For further clinical studies, autologous tissue-specific cell preparation of olfactory ensheathing cells has to be created. Cell therapy in combination surgical and pharmacological treatment will substantially improve the quality of life of patients with posttraumatic spinal cord cysts.

We studied aggression in male Sprague-Dawley rats in a model of a depressive-like state induced by unpredictable treatment with ultrasonic waves with the frequencies of 20-45 kHz for 1, 2 or 3 weeks. We did not find any increase in the number of animals exhibiting aggression in the “Resident- intruder” test after the treatment of any chosen duration. However, the aggressive animals exposed to ultrasound exhibited increased number of attacks and their total duration as well as decreased latency of the first attack compared to the respective scores in the animals of the control group. Taking this into account, we suggest that the initial level of aggression increases in a model of ultrasonic chronic stress.

We developed an optimal protocol for preparing and culturing of olfactory ensheathing cells from human olfactory mucosa. Using this protocol, we obtained a culture enriched with human olfactory ensheathing cells. Immunofluorescence analysis by simultaneous expression of GFAP and p75NTR markers showed that the content of ensheathing cells was maximum in passage 3 and 4 cultures (94 and 89.5%, respectively). The developed protocol can be recommended for obtaining autologous preparations of human ensheathing cells for cell therapy of spinal cord injuries.

Background Post-traumatic syringomyelia (PTS) is a common disease after spinal cord injury (SCI). The present study was performed to evaluate the advantages of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in estimating SCI and prognosing PTS in SCI rats. Material/Methods Forty rats were divided into 3 groups based on the extent of the individual SCI and PTS: a control group (n=10), a PTS group (n=8), and an SCI group (n=22). BBB tests were performed preoperatively and postoperatively at (1 d, 3 d, 5 d, 1 w, 2 w, 1 w, 2 w, 3 w, 4 w, 5 w, and 6 w). MRI T2 scanning was conducted postoperatively at (1 w, 2 w, 3 w, 4 w, 5 w, 6 w). DTI and diffusion tensor tractography were used for analyzing neuro-fiber changes after SCI. Oncolytic viral therapy is a promising approach to targeted therapy of malignant tumors. In this article we consider the therapeutic potential of a non-pathogenic Coxsackie A7 virus (CA7V) with neurotropic properties on a model of human neuroblastoma. Purpose to study in vitro/in vivo sensitivity of human neuroblastoma HNB (from cell line JMR-32) to Coxsackie virus A7 (CA7V). Objectives: еvaluation of cytolytic activity in vitro on NB cells verified by cytomorphology and assessment of dynamics of the growth of subcutaneous neuroblastoma xenografts in Balb/c nude male mice exposed to CA7V multiple i.v. injections. Material and methods. CA7V was produced in the cells of line-producer С-33А. Cell culture and the strain of transplanted NB (JMR-32) were obtained from the Collection of N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center. Cytomorphologic verification of neuroblastoma and CA7V cytolytic activity were executed with the use of standard cultural methods, TCID50 and IC50 criteria. Experiments «in vivo» were performed on immunodeficient Balb/c nude male mice bred and reared in the N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center. The experiments were made at day 6 when neuroblastoma subcutaneous xenografts developed to the Vmean = 79-82 mm3 by day 6. The treatment with CA7V at the i.v. single dose of 1×108 cells per mouse was performed 3 times with 72-hours intervals; evaluation of the efficacy was made according to standard criterion Т/С ≤ 42%; and control of the tumor growth rate (Vt/V0) in the dynamics. Statistical assessment was made with the software Excel for Windows 2007 with the use of T-test under p ≤ 0.05. Results. Cytolytic effect of CA7V on neuroblastoma cells was registered similar to basic parameters of the original line-producer С-33А: TCID50 = 0.99×10-4 pfu/cell, and IC50 = 1.11×10-4 pfu/cell; 48 and 72 hours after virus reproduction in NB cells the rate was 2.0 and 1.5-fold higher than in the line-producer cells. СA7V inhibiting effect on the growth of large subcutaneous neuroblstoma xenografts is registered after the first i.v. injection at the minimal level of T/C = 67% (criterion ≤ 42%) with the 1.5-fold decrease of the tumor growth rate and cancellation of early mice death by day 22 vs day 15 in the control group of untreated mice (n = 8). Conclusion. The obtained results allow to consider human neuroblastoma (JMR-32) to possess the low sensitivity to oncolytic effect of in vitro/in vivo. In order to obtain significant effect in vivo the treatment should be started in mice with 2-fold smaller tumors and a higher initial dose of the oncolytic agent.

5-ALA intraoperative fluorescence is widely used in surgery of brain tumors for intraoperative demarcation of boundaries and more total resection because 5-ALA metabolites are not accumulated in the intact brain and vascular tissues. Given this fact, it was hypothesized that fluorescence of vessels in the immediate vicinity of a brain tumor may indicate their infiltration by tumor cells as a potential pathway for their dissemination and as a factor for continued tumor growth after surgery and adjuvant therapy.Identification of fluorescent vessels located near cerebral gliomas, with a histological description of their structure, relationships with the tumor, and potential invasion of the walls by tumor cells.A prospective cohort study included 14 patients with malignant supratentorial gliomas, aged 20 to 78 years. Five patients were operated on due to continued tumor growth. Two hours before surgery, all patients received 5-ALA orally. During surgery, a microscope (Carl Zeiss OPMI Pentero, Germany) with a fluorescent module (BLUE-400) was used. In all cases, molecular-genetic and immunohistochemical examinations of the tumor material were performed. During surgery, fluorescent vessels, after evaluating their functional significance, were also resected for histological examination.Glioblastoma and anaplastic astrocytoma were verified in 10 and 4 patients, respectively. In 4 out of 10 glioblastoma cases, vessels with homogeneous or fragmentary fluorescent walls were detected in the tumor bed after resection of most of the tumor; in patients with anaplastic astrocytomas, vascular fluorescence was not observed. In the four vascular samples with intraoperatively detected wall fluorescence, tumor invasion into the vascular layers was revealed in all cases. These patients underwent an immunohistochemical examination with monoclonal antibodies to the glial GFAP marker, which clearly identified areas of ingrowth of tumor cells into the vascular wall.5-ALA intraoperative fluorescence is a fundamentally new approach in the rapid diagnosis of tumor-infiltrated blood vessels. Invasion of tumor cells to intact vessels may be a mechanism of tumor progression and dissemination. С учетом этого факта высказана гипотеза о том, что флуоресценция сосудов, расположенных в непосредственной близости от опухолей мозга, может указывать на их инфильтрацию опухолевыми клетками как на потенциальный путь их диссеминации и фактор продолженного роста опухоли после операции и адъювантной терапии. Цель исследования - выявление флуоресцирующих сосудов, расположенных вблизи глиом головного мозга, с гистологическим описанием их структуры, взаимоотношений с опухолью и возможной инвазии стенок опухолевыми клетками. Материал и методы. В проспективное когортное исследование включены 14 пациентов в возрасте от 20 до 78 лет со злокачественными супратенториальными глиомами. У 5 больных операция проведена в связи с продолженным ростом опухоли. Все пациенты за 2 ч до операции получали 5-АЛК внутрь. Во время операции использовали микроскоп OPMI Pentero (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Германия) с флуоресцентным модулем (BLUE-400). Во всех случаях проведены молекулярно-генетическое и иммуногистохимическое исследования опухолевого материала. В ходе хирургического вмешательства дополнительно для гистологического исследования резецировали флуоресцирующие сосуды после оценки их функциональной значимости. Результаты. У 10 пациентов верифицирована глиобластома, у 4 - анапластическая астроцитома. В 4 из 10 наблюдений c глиобластомами после удаления основной массы опухоли в ложе удаленной опухоли выявлены сосуды с гомогенно или фрагментарно флуоресцирующими стенками, у пациентов с анапластическими астроцитомами флуоресценции сосудов не отмечалось. Во всех четырех образцах сосудов, в которых интраоперационно определена флуоресценция стенки, выявлена инвазия опухоли в васкулярные слои. У данных пациентов проведено иммуногистохимическое исследование с использованием моноклональных антител к глиальному маркеру GFAP. Это позволило четко выделить участки врастания опухолевых клеток в сосудистую стенку. Выводы. Интраоперационная флуоресценция с применением 5-АЛК является принципиально новым подходом в экспресс-диагностике сосудов, инфильтрированных опухолью. Инвазия опухолевыми клетками ранее интактных сосудов может являться механизмом, посредством которого осуществляются прогрессирование и диссеминация опухолевого процесса. Дополнительная резекция флуоресцирующих сосудов может влиять на радикальность хирургического лечения, однако необходима обязательная оценка их функциональной значимости.

Human placenta mesenchymal stromal cells were injected to healthy rats either stereotaxically into the striatum or intra-arterially through the internal carotid artery. Some cells injected into the brain migrated along the corpus callosum both medially and laterally or concentrated around small blood vessels. A small fraction of MSC injected intra-arterially adhered to the endothelium and stayed inside blood vessels for up to 48 hours mostly in the basin of the middle cerebral artery. Neither stereotaxic, nor intra-arterial transplantation of mesenchymal stromal cells modulated the proliferation of neural stem cells in the subventricular zone of the brain, but stereotaxic transplantation suppressed activation of their proliferation in response to traumatization with the needle.

We studied the possibility of developing an autism model based on chronic prenatal psychological stress caused by variable frequency ultrasound 20-45 kHz. The offspring of female rats stressed during pregnancy demonstrated reduced time of social contacts in the social interaction test, increased anxiety in the open-field test, and memory impairment in the Morris water maze test in comparison with the control (intact) rat offspring. We also found a reducing trend in the BDNF gene expression in the amygdala in males of the experimental group. The results showed the possibility of developing the animal autism model based on prenatal stress.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the incidence and associated factors for early death in stage IV colorectal cancer (CRC) and to construct the predictive nomogram. Patients with stage IV CRC, who had been diagnosed between 2010 and 2014 in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results datasets, were eligible for this retrospective cohort study. The univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were conducted to determine the associated factors for early death (survival time ≤ 3 months). The predictive nomogram was constructed and the internal validation was performed. Ten thousand two hundred sixty-three out of 36,461 (28.1%) eligible patients resulted in all causes of early death (25.8% for cancer-specific early death and 2.3% for non-cancer early death). Advanced age, marital status, right colon, poor differentiation, higher N stage, and bone metastasis were positively associated with all causes of early death, cancer-specific early death, and non-cancer early death, while higher T stage, positive carcinoembryonic antigen, and distant metastases (bone, lung, liver, and brain) were only positively associated with all causes of early death and cancer-specific early death. The calibration curve for all causes of early death, cancer-specific early death, and non-cancer early death showed the prediction curve closely approximated at the 45° line and the areas under the curve were 75.7% (95% CI, 74.9–76.4%), 75.9% (95% CI, 75.1–76.6%), and 76.9% (95% CI, 76.3–77.6%), respectively. The nomogram was calibrated to predict all causes of early death development, cancer-specific early death development, and non-cancer early death development. These findings can be utilized in early screening and to tailor targeted treatment regimens for stage IV CRC patients.

Willner's "chronic mild stress" (CMS) model is a globally recognized and most commonly used depression model. A depression model induced by ultrasonic exposure of variable frequencies has been created in our laboratory. This article compares two models of the depressive-like state according to three validity criteria. Face validity has been demonstrated in sucrose preference test, Porsolt test, social interest, open field and the Morris water maze. Rats after ultrasound impact have more pronounced anhedonia and social isolation. The construct validity has been proven due to increased levels of corticosterone, epinephrine and norepinephrine and reduced levels of dopamine and some of its metabolites in rat plasma after ultrasound exposure. Predictive validity has been described previously, where the therapeutic effects of various classes of antidepressants have been shown. Our study has demonstrated that the ultrasound-induced depression model is suitable, such as the generally accepted CMS protocol, and meets all required validity criteria. The model presented in this article might help to study pathogenetic mechanisms of depressive disorders, as well as to test promising methods of depression treatment.

High grade gliomas (HGGs) are the most frequent and highly invasive type of brain tumors, which arise from glial cells. Among HGGs, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the commonest and deadliest tumor type. Standard HGG therapy that involves tumor resection followed by concomitant treatment with radiation exposure and temozolomide (TMZ) cannot prevent recurrent tumor. The median survival of treated patients after surgery does not exceed 1.5 years. Vaccination with autologous dendritic cells (DCs) pulsed with tumor-specific peptides, antigens, or lysates is considered as a promising option to induce a potent anti-tumor immune response and cytotoxicity against GBM cells. However, since the tumor microenvironment is highly immunosuppressive and immunotolerant, specialized approaches should be applied to protect DC transplants against tumor-induced functional impairment and inhibition. So far, many phase I-III clinical trials utilizing DC vaccines for HGG treatment were completed or are underway. In summary, DC vaccination was safe and well tolerated by patients. DC-induced anti-tumor immune responses correlated with prolonged overall and progression- free survival. Combination of DC therapy with other interventional strategies (i.e., radiotherapy, chemotherapy, antibodies, etc.) and multimodal approaches should improve HGG treatment outcomes. In this review, we consider strategies that provide an option to override the immune inhibitory tumor microenvironment and boost DC vaccine-based antitumor immune response.

The efficiency of monotherapy with zoledronic acid (Resorba), doxorubicin, and their combination was studied on the model of metastasizing breast carcinoma in BALB/c mice. Doxorubicin monotherapy was accompanied by a significant increase in median survival up to 57 days (vs. 34 and 35 days in control groups); 27% animals survived for 90 days (duration of the study). Bioluminescence area of the primary tumor significantly decreased on days 21 and 28; the total number of visceral metastases also decreased according to magnetic-resonance imaging data. Resorba monotherapy produced no general toxic effect, the median survival increased to 64 days, and 90-day survival was 33%. Imaging techniques (magnetic-resonance imaging, microtomography, bioluminescent analysis) showed that Resorba delayed the development of the primary tumor (regression of luminescence area on days 21 and 28, regression of standardized bioluminescence intensity on day 28) and significantly reduced the number of visceral metastases in comparison with the control. Combination therapy was less effective than monotherapy with the same medications. Median survival was 55 days, 90-day survival was 13%, but magnetic-resonance imaging and bioluminescence analysis after combination therapy also showed delayed growth of the primary tumor and reduced number of visceral metastases. Microtomography revealed bone metastases in ~30% animals of the control group; in experimental groups, no bone metastases were found. The experiment with periosteal (distal epiphysis of the femur) injection of 4T1-Luc2 tumor cells demonstrated pronounced selective effectiveness of Resorba in relation to bone metastases. Monotherapy with Resorba can prevent the development of not only bone, but also visceral metastases of breast cancer.

The application of cell carriers for transporting nanodrugs to the tumor draws much attention as the alternative to the passive drug delivery. In this concept, the neutrophil (NΦ) is of special interest as this cell is able to uptake nanoparticles (NPs) and cross the vascular barrier in response to tumor signaling. There is a growing body of literature describing NP-NΦ interactions in vitro and in vivo that demonstrates the opportunity of using these cells to improve the efficacy of cancer therapy. However, a number of conceptual and technical issues need to be resolved for translating the technology into clinics. The current review summarizes the recent advances and challenges associated with NP-NΦ interactions, with the special focus on the complex interplay between the NP internalization pathways and the modulation of NΦ activity, and its potential consequences for nanodrug delivery.

We studied the effect of electroconvulsive therapy on cognitive functions in rats with depression-like disorder caused by exposure to ultrasound of varying frequency (20-45 kHz). Object recognition and Morris water-maze tests revealed no negative effects of the therapy on memory. Moreover, positive effect of therapy was demonstrated that manifested in amelioration of memory disturbances in depression-like disorders in these behavioral tests. The results of this study do not support the idea about side effects of electroconvulsive therapy, in particular, development of transient amnesia, and are a prerequisite for a more thorough study of internal mechanisms of the effect of the therapy on cognitive sphere.

Stress-induced changes in the behavior of CBA and BALB/c mice were studied after 3-week ultrasound exposure (22-45 kHz). The mice of both lines demonstrated increased aggression in the resident-intruder and social interest paradigms and reduced number of social interactions in the social interest test. Elevated plus maze test showed a decrease in anxiety level in CBA mice and an increase in this parameter in BALB/c mice. Chronic exposure to ultrasound induced an increase in aggression level in mice of both lines that was not directly related to changes in anxiety level.

We studied the effect of ultrasonic waves with a frequency of 20-45 kHz on behavioral reactions of rats after 7, 14 and 21 days of continuous exposure. A decrease in the number of social contacts in the social interest test was recorded in all groups, while lengthening of immobility time in Porsolt test was found only in the groups exposed to ultrasound for 2 and 3 weeks. Memory impairment in the new object recognition test was recorded only after 21 days of stressing. Chronic exposure to ultrasound of variable frequencies leads to the development of a depressive-like state in rats and the duration of exposure affects the specificity of the observed disorders. Different protocols of using of this model help to determine the stages of depressive-like condition in rats that can serve as a basis for the development of new methods of depressive disorders treatment.

Oxytocin (OXT) and arginine-vasopressin (AVP) are structurally homologous peptide hormones synthesized in the hypothalamus. Nowadays, the role of OXT and AVP in the regulation of social behaviour and emotions is generally known. However, recent researches indicate that peptides also participate in cognitive functioning. This review presents the evidence that the OXT/AVP systems are involved in the formation of social, working, spatial and episodic memory, mediated by such brain structures as the hippocampal CA2 and CA3 regions, amygdala and prefrontal cortex. Some data have demonstrated that the OXT receptor's polymorphisms are associated with impaired memory in humans, and OXT knockout in mice is connected with memory deficit. Additionally, OXT and AVP are involved in mental disorders' progression. Stress-induced imbalance of the OXT/AVP systems leads to an increased risk of various mental disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, and autism. At the same time, cognitive deficits are observed in stress and mental disorders, and perhaps peptide hormones play a part in this. The final part of the review describes possible therapeutic strategies for the use of OXT and AVP for treatment of various mental disorders.

Background The objectives were to investigate the disparity in the prevalence of bone metastases (BM) between the sexes and to assess the effect of female sex on the development and prognosis of BM. Methods Cases of invasive non-sex-specific cancers diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program were used. The prevalence of BM was calculated by combining the prevalence of BM among different cancers. Multivariable logistic regression and proportion hazard regression were conducted to investigate the effect of female sex, and the results were pooled by meta-analysis. Results The pooled prevalence of BM among male and female patients was 2.3% (95% CI: 1.6–3.2%) and 1.8% (95% CI: 1.2–2.6%), respectively. The pooled prevalence of BM dramatically decreased for patients aged 11–40 years old, plateaued for patients aged 41–90 years old and increased for patients aged > 90 years old in both male and female patients. Meta-analysis suggested that female sex had a protective effect on the development of BM (pooled OR = 0.80; 95% CI: 0.75–0.84; p p Conclusions Female sex was associated with fewer BM in various non-sex-specific cancers, and the effect was constant with changes in age. Female sex showed a protective effect exclusively on the prognosis of respiratory system cancers.

We performed a comparative study of the effect of electroconvulsive therapy on anxiety in outbred rats and Sprague-Dawley rats with depressive-like disorder induced by exposure to ultrasound of variable frequency (20-45 Hz). The anxiogenic effect of therapy was revealed in elevated plus maze and open-field tests in both linear and non-lineal rats, but was more pronounced in linear animals. Differences between outbred rats and Sprague-Dawley rats by the anxiety level were demonstrated. These results suggest that electroconvulsive therapy should be used with cautious in patients with depression and comorbid anxiety disorders. Pronounced behavioral differences between linear and non-linear rats should be considered when choosing optimal experimental object in this research field.
