Streets are an essential element of cities, and their design has a profound impact on their functionality to the movement of people and their well-being. This paper investigates preferences for and economic values of several street design characteristics, encompassing greenspaces (ground vegetation, trees, flowers), and walking and cycling infrastructure. A discrete choice experiment on a single case study street in Taipei, Taiwan, has revealed positive preferences for ground vegetation (and a willingness to pay—WTP—between $2.8 and $4 per year for a 1% increase in coverage), separated cycling infrastructure (with a WTP between $60 and $100 for cycleways separated from traffic), pedestrian access to road islands (WTP of $55), and the (reduced) amount of space dedicated to motor vehicles (WTP of $29 to avoid any increase). Flowers were also deemed important, but a mixed picture was obtained with respect to preference for street trees. The analysis is exploratory, on a relatively small sample of street users, but contributes to the literature on the importance of urban vegetation and walking and cycling infrastructure when designing streets and be used to draw lessons for other similarly dense urban areas in the country and wider region. Typhoon is one of the most destructive disasters in Taiwan, which usually causes many floods and mudslides and prevents the electrical and water supply. Prior to its arrival, how to accurately forecast the path and rainfall of typhoon are important issues. In the past, a regression-based model was the most applied statistical method to evaluate the associated problems. However, it generally ignored the spatial dependence in the data, resulting in less accurate estimation and prediction, and the importance of particular explanatory variables may not be apparent. Therefore, in this paper we focus on assessing the spatial risk variations regarding the typhoon cumulated rainfall at Taipei with respect to typhoon locations by using the spatial hierarchical Bayesian model combined with the spatial conditional autoregressive model, where the model parameters are estimated by designing a family of stochastic algorithms based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo technique. The proposed method is applied to a real data set of Taiwan for illustration. Also, some important explanatory variables regarding the typhoon cumulated rainfall at Taipei are indicated as well. This study presents a land-use design model for transit-oriented development planning at the regional level. The proposed model allocates a city's residential, employment and recreational activities according to four objectives and six groups of constraints. In order to handle adequately the presence of uncertainty and the flexibility needed in practical planning, the inputs and outputs of the model can be grey numbers. To solve the proposed model and other grey multi-objective programming models, the Grey TOPSIS approach can be adopted. The model is applied to Taipei City. Recommendations are made regarding the case study and a sensitivity analysis informs policy formulation and parameters setting. Este estudio presenta un modelo de diseño de uso del suelo para la planificación de desarrollo regional orientado al tránsito de ámbito regional. El modelo propuesto asigna las actividades residenciales, laborales y de recreo de acuerdo con cuatro objetivos y seis grupos de restricciones. Para poder manejar adecuadamente la presencia de incertidumbre y la flexibilidad necesaria en la planificación práctica, los inputs y outputs del modelo pueden ser números grey. Para resolver el modelo propuesto y otros modelos de programación multiobjetivo grey, se puede adoptar el método Grey TOPSIS. El modelo se aplica para Taipei City. This paper presents results of a case study on cliff recession mechanism and progressive development of talus deposits around Xiangshan of the Sishou Hills in the southeast of the Taipei Basin. Based on photogrammetric analysis and physical modeling, the geomorphologic changes of talus deposits are carefully examined and the cliff recession rates from 1904 to 2005 are thus measured and tabulated. Our study identified the fundamental control factors on mechanisms of cliff recession and proposed a possible scenario of cliff recession and progressive development of talus deposits around the Xiangshan region from 1904 to 2005. Multi-municipal water governance, with fragmentation and asymmetry among boundaries and institutions caused by water sharing, can give rise to quarrels among governments. Many related cases worldwide suggest integration and bottom-up participation as solutions for fostering multi-municipal collaboration, although existing power imbalances and competing interests continue to motivate conflicts. The research attempts to provide insights on how territorial conflicts can create barriers to multi-municipal integration. The case study considers the headwater of Taipei Metropolis, located in a rural-urban nexus in Taiwan, which is characterised by disconnected territory and authority. Along with democratisation and urbanisation, conflicts in interests between the headwater municipality, New Taipei City, and the capital downstream, Taipei City, have become more significant. By content and discourse analysis using secondary data and semi-structured interviews, the study identifies critical changes leading to the curious status quo and possible reasons for unresolved conflicts. The configuration of a multi-municipal water-sharing region has mediated inner tensions of territorialisation, which have been stimulated by developmental pressures of a growing entity under changing scalar status in the municipal hierarchy. The research indicates that territorial discourses provide legitimacy for municipal interests, while marking a shift from upstream inequity to downstream water sharing. The case study identifies the role of territorial conflicts and stresses the impacts of municipal competition triggered by scale politics, thereby offering an alternative understanding of conflicts in multi-municipal water governance. In the transport field, two characteristics–inter-temporal dependency and fuzziness–need to be considered when assessing transport performance. First, input and output levels are inter-temporal dependent due to heavy capital investment and because quasi-fixed input can influence output levels over multiple periods. Second, conventional Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models are, in nature, formulated with quantitative variables. However, qualitative measurements that are characterized with "vagueness" or "fuzziness" are as important as quantitative variables for multi-period transport performance assessment. To rectify these problems, the present study extends previous research by proposing a Dynamic Fuzzy Data Envelopment Analysis (DFDEA) method for assessing the comparative efficiency where inter-temporal dependence exists in operating production processes with some "fuzzy" variables. An case study was conducted to evaluate the performance of city bus transport companies in Taipei, Taiwan.
