- Abstract
In the fourth decade of the last century, the most important synthesis studies about Eminescu appeared: Tudor Vianu - Eminescu's Poetry (1930), G. Călinescu - Mihai Eminescu's Life (1932) and Mihai Eminescu's Opera (1934-1936). After Călinescu's biography and E. Lovinescu's novels - Mite (1934) and Bălăuca (1935), the true Eminescu biographical image is born, "the true myth of the poet's life" (Simuţ). How was the epic image of Eminescu's biography formed in the narratives of the two literary critics and historians? How did they manage to mix fiction and documentary in the writings about Eminescu? What does the epic image of the Eminescu biography look like, as it emerges from the novels of the two critical authorities?. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Beckettian theatre describes the agony of the modern world. His character as shown in the phenomenon of his perception, even when limited to four aspects: body, items, time and the Other, let us confirm the validity of Beckett's reflections about a man who is lost, terrified and resigned to our world. Abstract: A close look at the identity construction of the character Empress Carlota in the historical novel, Noticias del Imperio, by the Mexican author Fernando del Paso. Published in 1987, the novel is based on the ephemeral era of Maximilian of Habsburg, Emperor of Mexico from 1864 to 1867. This article takes into account both textual self-representations and the intervention of myth (in the discursive sense found in the work of Roland Barthes), as well as the rules of self-utterance, evidenced in the text as most relevant. Also under consideration are the textual processes which generate possible regulating meanings (elements which take part in the construction, properly speaking, of the protagonist’s identity).

IDENTITY crises (Psychology) , *PRONOUNS (Grammar) , *LITERARY criticism , *PSYCHOPATHS , *INTROVERTS - Abstract
The texts of Leslie Kaplan question the irreducible opposition between the real and the non-real. Her characters and their intentional absence confuse the repository and fictional worlds, not only to point out the thin margin between reality and fiction, but to underline the impossible delimitation between the real and the fictional, or even between the text and the world. This article studies the characters of Kaplan and aims to demonstrate their identity crisis through the study of their literary onomastic and the use of the neutral pronoun 'it' and allegoric expressions. In addition, the objective of this article is to shed light on the Kaplanian characters as Kunderian models, while stressing the particularity of their physionomy, which consists to present 'fuzzy' characters that are present and absent at the same time, engaging the reader in the fictional process as a try to complete the missing details. This article concludes that the Kaplanian characters are not only the prototypes of the postmodern being, but they are also introverted, psychopaths and a demonstration of different facets of the unconscious. DEHUMANIZATION , *PSYCHOLOGY , *TERROR , *GOOD & evil , *NOVELISTS - Abstract
The relative stability characteristic of classic novels favors the identification of characters who have a clear lineage and psychology, which results in a coherent language. In contrast, the neo-romantic works inherent in the war because the novelists of that time lived it, reflect this painful experience. Claude Simon's Route des Flandres (1960) is the breeding ground for degraded characters, depersonalized, disintegrated and disintegrated by the terror they have experienced. As such, the novelist reflects this dehumanization by various processes. Also, the evil is such that it affects the neo-romantic language fallen into crisis to the point of being incoherent, because of its destructuring, in part linked to the jumps of memory, to dreams and to hallucinations which exclude the protagonists of the novel of their immediate surroundings. In Zeami’s treatises, there is no place for what the modern Japanese would call a character (人物 jinbutsu). Instead, Zeami describes human forms (人体 jintai) produced by the actor on stage. Their shapes (姿 sugata/shi) are associated with the metaphors of the flower (花 hana/ka) which represents the beauty of the role on the stage, and of the the seed (種 tane/shu) which refers to its potentiality. Paradoxically, this lively metaphor is based on the artificial performance of a masked actor compared to a puppet (操り ayatsuri). Instead of a transcendental subject, we have an artificial form that will take the freshness and beauty of life through the actor’s mastery., Les traités de Zeami sur le nō n’accordent aucune place à ce que le japonais moderne désignerait comme « personnage » (人物 jinbutsu).

Bonaventure Des Périers, author of Les Nouvelles récréations et joyeux devis (1558), not only borrows several stories from Poggio’s Facetiæ, he also plays with a too merry (“trop gaillard”) decorum, whose rhetorical, ethical, and moral implications he examines and exploits. Indeed, while the influences of the Italian original emerge in the cheerfully provocative enthusiasm of Des Périers’s rhetorical and narrative material, where he plays on the limits of propriety and good taste, his tales nonetheless highlight the moral implications of decorum, with some characters providing a unique illustration of magnanimity. In addition, these tales reveal that decorum can be a medium for questioning literary genres. While taking from Poggio’s Facetiæ, Des Périers practices a forward writing or écriture du dépassement: he goes beyond the licentious and provocative amusements inherited from the Italian humanist, in order to lay claim to a style of writing and to wake up readers who are prisoners of their reading habits.

This article analyses Ginés de Pasamonte as a character from the literary tradition that Cervantes naturalized to his fictional world, more than a parody or criticism on a real figure or a literary genre. In the craft of Ginés, Cervantes applied a skeptical perspective, a peculiar aspect of his writing, which is not necessarily against picaresque, but a literary device to entertain the reader through two comic concepts, the paradox and the irony.

This article explains the triple seriality which contributed to the fame of the war picturebooks of Bécassine and the Pieds Nickelés published from 1913 to 1919, and first published as comic strips in the weeklies La Semaine de Suzette and L’Épatant. This study aims to show how the belligerent and propagandist context contributed to the popularity of the adventures of these heroes through the effect of reality and the narrative tension, first in the strip of a board, then between magazine episodes and finally between picturebooks. It will then be necessary to consider the editorial strategy for the sequential distribution of stories. Finally, we note the role of the cliffhanger in the reinforcement of a recurring literariness and the construction of literary and social types.

- Abstract
One thing intrigues the reader of The Quest for the Absolute by Honoré de Balzac: the two main characters undergo a transfiguration. Balthazar Claës, a crazy chemist, physically deteriorates and becomes uglier with every weeks passed in his quest for the Absolute. Joséphine Claës, his devoted wife, to the contrary blossoms and beautifies progressively as she suffers. More so, their physical features entirely hold between two binary oppositions: perfection and imperfection. Their description, their respective struggle against the Absolute, desired by one, cursed by the other, metaphorically exemplifies Balzac poetic, a creative mode informed by the practice of imperfection. This paper tends to explain how and why Arrian condemns some of Alexander’s transgressions before approving them in the final description of the conqueror. At first, the historian depicts a traditional concept of transgression, which links the crossing of geographical boundaries to the adoption of barbarian habits and hubris. But afterwards he highlights the differences between these transgressions by making it possible to get back into a reasonable behaviour and by differentiating true transgression from apparent transgression. Thus, he establishes different kinds of violations. This analysis enables him to overcome the traditional opposition between transgression and the established order: geographic barriers can finally be crossed in order to preserve justice, and paradoxically, the ostentatious violation of Greek habits and the apparent arrogance can help the ruler fight against disorder.

Published in 2009, Anne Terral’s novel Curiosité is a modern version of Bluebeard. Not only does the author use the story to write her own novel but, what is even more important, she also borrows certain formal elements from fairy tales, such as time and space treatment, unrealistic atmosphere and archetypal nature of characters. It seems crucial then to examine what poetic possibilities have come out of the union of a novel with a fairy tale. The assumption is that the presence of the elements listed above allows the author to tell the story of a murder in a symbolic manner. Those elements suspend the standard judgment of facts, typical for criminal, psychological or realistic novel. In consequence, the reader does not condemn the count of Furbach for killing his wives nor does he perceive Arian’s behavior as insane because of her feelings for the count. Thanks to the denial of verisimilitude Curiosité becomes a metaphoric novel of love and trust.

This study sets out to interrogate the notion of exemplarity in María de Zayas’s Novelas amorosas y ejemplares (1637), whose title can be read as an opportunistic extension of Cervantes’s famous work. Far from limiting itself to the study of the outcomes of the «maravillas» of the author, the article attempts to show the coherence of the construction of the characters and, in some novels, the patient construction of an exemplary sense in which a feminine perspective is expressed that claims an equality of potencies and capacities between Women and Men.

Are there specific conditions to consider when playing a Shakespearean ghost character rather than a character of flesh and bone? Through a scenic creation of Act I, scene 5 of Hamlet with three actresses, this discussion probes this very question by making visible the processes of creation and representation of the actor-ghost and his son and by observing how the scenic imagination of the actresses is built and evolves from and in relation to the multiple layers of Shakespearean writing. Starting from actoral practice, this discussion explores how the material that Shakespeare offers his interpreter sediments in him and how a disembodied figure is embodied in the actor. This will lead us to a broader reflection on the spectral dimension of the notion of the dramatic character who is more like a ghost than the human being whom we usually mistake him for.

This article intends to unfold the meta-literary dimension of the work of Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003) in two parallel paths traced in his multiple books and which converge in the singular character of Benno von Archimboldi, a consecrated writer of unknown identity that unites the different parts of 2666. In this sense, the first part seeks to list and problematize some of the topics addressed by Bolaño within the literary field and which will be capital for the narrative structure of his opus magnum. In a second moment, we follow the path of Arturo Belano, the author's alter ego and a fundamental character for the understanding of Bolaños work. Finally, we analyze how these two paths confront and consolidate themselves in the figure of Archimboldi, not only at the thematic level but also at the level of the narrative device.

Thierry Groensteen’s concept of iconic solidarity (IS) is one of the most familiar terms in all of comics scholarship. This paper introduces a new theoretical term and concept, figural solidarity (FS), as a critical adaptation of Groensteen’s notion (1999; 2011); FS provides additional explanatory power in the central cases of narrative comics. FS is founded on the coreferentiality of sequential figures, which provides both cohesiveness and driving force for visual narratives. The introductory section compares empirical eye-tracking data with the hypothesized top-down strategies of readers influenced by FS, as they concentrate on recurring characters to understand narratives. Subsequent sections retrace FS’s theoretical roots in Groensteen, Mikkonen and other scholars. The concept of figure in the FS context is defined and intuitive motivation for it provided. We then address, without fully resolving, the question of whether and how linguistic theories of meaning can be applied to comics (with particular reference to Cohn’s Visual Language Theory). We hope that the concept of FS may promote a broader research program into how comics images create meaning.

- Abstract
The present work intends to rescue the literary work of Aluísio Azevedo from the neglect to which it seems to have been condemned by a majority of literary critics who, since the end of the nineteenth century, have been treating his narratives as school examples of second-rate naturalism. Starting from the analysis of the evolution and the composition of his main characters, this paper seeks to find out how the condition of the Portuguese immigrant was recreated in fictional lines, in order to question the presumed anti-lusitanism that the author of The Slum (O Cortiço in Portuguese) has been accused of so many times. The article examines the links between fictionality and textuality, which are understood as two distinct regimes whose relationships to the text diverge, in order to better examine the demands that the term "transfictionality" places on traditional modes of literary analysis. It is also a question of questioning the status of the character and the modalities of its migrations, according to the degree of fictionality of the text. In this sense, it is also a question of showing why the genre of science fiction maintains a singular connivance with the notion of "transfictionality" whereas this notion is more difficult to apply to medieval texts. The limits of this notion for the analysis of historically and/or culturally distant texts are then considered.

Lorca’s characters have been the subject of high-quality studies. All of them focus on his theater and leave aside his poetry. This article approaches the lyric regime of the Lorquian characters as a form of recitative, and takes the example of Amargo, a transgeneric figure, at the crossroads of the elegiac and the tragic, to examine his incarnations in Poema del cante jondo, Bodas de sangre and Romancero gitano.

This article questions the status of the sci-fi television series character when confronted with his double from a parallel world. The character is analyzed as dependent on narrative structures, the fictional world, aesthetic forms, as well as the practices of the actors. The figurative analyzes deployed in this article seek to account for the various aesthetics surrounding the relations to otherness experienced by split serial characters. The analysis start with doubles easily recognizables (by caricature, bodily alienation, and the “framing” of the alterity) and continue with overhauls increasingly imperceptibles (by intrication, entanglement, and “double-sided” image).

International audience; This article considers the question of the narrative of innovations through the characters involved and their actions in the innovation process. This entry through the characters allows us to understand the said process through the analysis of the several hardships. It is through the history of the TEL, a Saint-Gobain process that revolutionized insulation in the 1950s, that the authors choose to highlight the centrality of the characters. By relying on the discourses produced by the company, this contribution leads to emancipation from the myth of the solitary innovator and allows us to see that the design process was not a long, quiet river but was, on the contrary, full of pitfalls that the actors were able to overcome with panache.; Cet article propose d’analyser les récits d’une innovation à travers le prisme de deux des piliers de l’analyse narrative que sont les personnages et les actions qui les engagent dans le processus d’innovation.

The plurality of interpretations, sometimes contradictory, allowed by the novel reveals a poetics of « distraction », in the etymological sense of « pulling in various directions ». Indeed, with its effects of delay and digressions and the wealth of symbolic – sometimes paradoxical – interpretations which it makes possible, the novel and its main character afford to light, beyond the very history of the genocide of Tutsi in Rwanda, the deep complexity of a phenomenon like genocide which still resists full and conscious understanding.

In the middle of the 20th century, Thérèse Le Prat photographs in France many actors of theater. Nevertheless her shots are not made to valorize celebrities, because she looks for expressions of faces during their passage through a role when is revealled an incarnation and an inevitable disappearance. Through a singular practice that we can call a photographic theater, this artist touches on the drama of human existence and its gravity.
