Salicylic anion abstraction and effusion are analyzed in different solvents and solvent mixtures. The significant Stokes shift observed for this anion is considered to indicate a rapid excited phase proton transfer reaction to its keto form.

Proton tautomerizaton plays an important role in many fields of chemistry and biochemistry. A study is conducted to demonstrate that salicylideneanilines are generally thermochromic in the fluid solution of isopentane or the isopentane/methylcyclohexane mixture and that the proton tautomerization, which is the origin of the thermochromism, is controlled by the aggregation of molecules.

The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and the resolution of the identity-coupled cluster singles and doubles method (RI-CC2) calculations are performed on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer in malonaldehyde, o-hydroxybenzaldehyde, salicylic acid, 7-hydroxy-1-indanone, and 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole. The results obtained indicate that both RI-CC2 and TDDFT methods are good candidates for the description of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESPIT) potential energy surfaces.

Salicylic and phthalic acids are used to study the complexation of aromatic carboxylic acids with Al(III) in solution and on mineral surfaces. A method for studying aqueous and surface carboxylic acids/metal complexes with UV Raman is developed.

The substituent effect on the dynamics of deactivation of the first singlet state of para-substituted salicylideneaniline in octanol is investigated using multifrequency phase and modulation fluorometry. It is found that the activation energy increases when the electron-donor strength of the substituent increases.

The multidimensional wave packet dynamics of salicylaldimine following ultrafast infrared laser excitation of the OH-bending and stretching vibrations is discussed. Coherent wave packet dynamics is observed after excitation of OH-bending fundamental transition. Strong anharmonic mode couplings to the stretching transition cause intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution on a time scale of about 700 fs.

Research designed to obtain an improved insight into the photochemical and photophysical properties of salicylic acid derivatives in solution is presented. There is evidence for a reversible intramolecular rearrangement in the excited state in polar and apolar aprotic solvents.
