Aerosols play a crucial role in cloud formation. Biologically derived materials from bacteria, fungi, pollen, lichen, viruses, algae, and diatoms can serve as ice nucleating particles (INPs), some of which initiate glaciation in clouds at relatively warm freezing temperatures. However, determining the magnitude of the interactions between clouds and biologically derived INPs remains a significant challenge due to the diversity and complexity of bioaerosols and limited observations of such aerosols facilitating cloud ice formation. Additionally, microorganisms from the domain Archaea have, to date, not been evaluated as INPs. Here, we present the first results reporting the ice nucleation activity of four species in the class Haloarchaea. Intact cells of Halococcus morrhuae and Haloferax sulfurifontis demonstrated the ability to induce immersion freezing at temperatures up to −18 ∘C, while lysed cells of Haloquadratum walsbyi and Natronomonas pharaonis were unable to serve as immersion INPs. Exposure to heat and peroxide digestion indicated that the INPs of intact cells were driven by organic (H. morrhuae and H. sulfurifontis) and possibly also heat labile materials (H. sulfurifontis only). While halophiles are prominent in hypersaline environments such as the Great Salt Lake and the Dead Sea, other members of the Archaea, such as methanogens and thermophiles, are prevalent in anoxic systems in seawater, sea ice, marine sediments, glacial ice, permafrost, and other cold niches. Archaeal extremophiles are both diverse and highly abundant. Thus, it is important to assess their ability to serve as INPs as it may lead to an improved understanding of biological impacts on clouds.

Ice nucleating particles (INPs) influence weather and climate by their effect on cloud phase state. Fatty alcohols present within aerosol particles confer a potentially important source of ice nucleation activity to sea spray aerosol produced in oceanic regions. However, their interactions with other aerosol components and the influence on freezing were previously largely unknown. Here, we report quantitative measurements of fatty alcohols in model sea spray aerosol and examine the relationships between the composition and structure of the surfactants and subphase in the context of these measurements. Deposited mixtures of surfactants retain the ability to nucleate ice, even in fatty acid-dominant compositions. Strong refreezing effects are also observed, where previously frozen water-surfactant samples nucleate more efficiently. Structural sources of refreezing behavior are identified as either kinetically trapped film states or three-dimensional (3D) solid surfactant particles. Salt effects are especially important for surfactant INPs, where high salt concentrations suppress freezing. A simple water uptake model suggests that surfactant-containing aerosol requires either very low salt content or kinetic trapping as solid particles to act as INPs in the atmosphere. These types of INPs could be identified through comparison of different INP instrument responses.

We present a framework for estimating concentrations of episodically elevated high-temperature marine ice nucleating particles (INPs) in the sea surface microlayer and their subsequent emission into the atmospheric boundary layer. These episodic INPs have been observed in multiple ship-based and coastal field campaigns, but the processes controlling their ocean concentrations and transfer to the atmosphere are not yet fully understood. We use a combination of empirical constraints and simulation outputs from an Earth system model to explore different hypotheses for explaining the variability of INP concentrations, and the occurrence of episodic INPs, in the marine atmosphere. In our calculations, we examine the following two proposed oceanic sources of high-temperature INPs: heterotrophic bacteria and marine biopolymer aggregates (MBPAs). Furthermore, we assume that the emission of these INPs is determined by the production of supermicron sea spray aerosol formed from jet drops, with an entrainment probability that is described by Poisson statistics. The concentration of jet drops is derived from the number concentration of supermicron sea spray aerosol calculated from model runs. We then derive the resulting number concentrations of marine high-temperature INPs (at 253 K) in the atmospheric boundary layer and compare their variability to atmospheric observations of INP variability. Specifically, we compare against concentrations of episodically occurring high-temperature INPs observed during field campaigns in the Southern Ocean, the Equatorial Pacific, and the North Atlantic. In this case study, we evaluate our framework at 253 K because reliable observational data at this temperature are available across three different ocean regions, but suitable data are sparse at higher temperatures. We find that heterotrophic bacteria and MBPAs acting as INPs provide only a partial explanation for the observed high INP concentrations. We note, however, that there are still substantial knowledge gaps, particularly concerning the identity of the oceanic INPs contributing most frequently to episodic high-temperature INPs, their specific ice nucleation activity, and the enrichment of their concentrations during the sea–air transfer process. Therefore, targeted measurements investigating the composition of these marine INPs and drivers for their emissions are needed, ideally in combination with modeling studies focused on the potential cloud impacts of these high-temperature INPs.

Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from personal care products (PCPs) contribute to poor indoor air quality. Exposure to indoor VOCs is typically determined through ambient concentration measurements; however, for some PCPs the proximity of use to the nose and mouth may lead to disproportionately large inhaled doses. In this paper, we quantify emission factors for six common PCP ingredient VOCs (ethanol, 2-propanol, benzyl alcohol, 1,3-butanediol, t-butyl alcohol, and the grouping of monoterpenes as limonene) from 16 facial day-moisturizers using headspace analysis and selected ion flow-tube mass spectrometry. A wide range of emissions rates were observed across the range of products tested (e.g., ethanol 3.3-6.9 × 102 µg s-1 g[product]-1 , limonene 1.3 × 10-1 -4.1 × 10-1 µg s-1 g[product]-1 ). We use a mannequin head with reconstructed nose and mouth airways to sample VOCs from facial application at typical respiration volumes. A single facial application of moisturizer can lead to a much larger inhaled VOC dose than would be inhaled from typical indoor ambient air over 24 h (e.g., limonene up to ~×16 greater via facial application, ethanol up to ~×300). Emissions from facially applied PCPs typically decayed to background concentrations over periods ranging from 5 to 150 min.

Angiomotins (Amot) are a family of adaptor proteins that regulate cellular differentiation and proliferation signaling. These cellular events are linked to the initiation of invasive ductal carcinoma, the most common form of breast cancer. Their characteristic coiled-coil homology (ACCH) domain selectively binds phosphatidylinositol lipids (PI), leading to membrane deformation and fusion events necessary for the trafficking polarity proteins to and from the apical membrane. We have previously shown that the ACCH domain has the ability to reorganize and homogenize the PI-enriched microdomains in membranes. However, the connection between the membrane fusion activity and the homogenization of PI has not been well described. In this study, we use small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) to demonstrate the lipid reorganization function and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to characterize the vesicle fusion activity. As a result, we found 6 mutations in the ACCH domain that caused a loss of fusion activity. Furthermore, these mutations also have lost lipid reorganization activity. The results presented provide insight into the role of the Amot ACCH domain residues in driving membrane fusion events involved in targeting and recycling cellular polarity proteins to maintain normal cellular phenotypes.

Intra-host evolved tumor virus variants have provided insights into the risk, pathogenesis and treatment responses of associated cancers. However, the intra-host variability of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), the etiologic agent of Kaposi sarcoma (KS), has not been explored at the whole viral genome level. An accurate and detailed description of KSHV intra-host diversity in whole KSHV genomes from matching tumors and oral swabs from Ugandan adults with HIV-associated KS was obtained by deep, short read sequencing, using duplex unique molecular identifiers (dUMI) – random double-stranded oligonucleotides that barcode individual DNA molecules before library amplification. This allowed suppression of PCR and sequencing errors down to ∼10−9/base. KSHV genomes were assembled de novo, and identified rearrangements were confirmed by PCR. 131-kb KSHV genome sequences, excluding major repeat regions and averaging 2.3 × 104 reads/base, were successfully obtained from 23 specimens from 9 individuals, including 7 tumor-oral pairs. Sampling more than 100 viral genomes in at least one specimen per individual showed that KSHV genomes were virtually homogeneous within samples and within individuals at the point mutational level. Heterogeneity, if present, was due to point mutations and genomic rearrangements in tumors. In 2 individuals, the same mutations were found in distinct KS tumors. The K8.1 gene was inactivated in tumors from 3 individuals, and all KSHV genomic aberrations retained the region surrounding the first major internal repeat (IR1). These findings suggest that lytic gene alterations may contribute to KS tumorigenesis or persistence.Author summaryKaposi sarcoma (KS) is a leading cancer in sub-Saharan Africa and in those with HIV co-infection. Infection by Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is necessary for KS, yet why only few KSHV infections develop into KS is largely unknown. While strain differences or mutations in other tumor viruses are known to affect the risk and progression of their associated cancers, whether KSHV genetic variation is important to the natural history of KS is unclear. Most studies of KSHV diversity have characterized only ∼4% of its 165-kb genome and may have been impacted by PCR or cloning artifacts. Here, we performed highly sensitive, single-molecule sequencing of whole KSHV genomes in paired KS tumors and oral swabs from 9 individuals with KS. We found that KSHV genomes were virtually identical within individuals, with no evidence of quasispecies formation nor multistrain infection. However, KSHV genome aberrations and inactivating mutations appeared to be a common, tumor-associated phenomenon, with some mutations shared by distinct tumors within an individual. Certain regions of the KSHV genome featured prominently among tumor-associated mutations, suggesting that they are important contributors to the pathogenesis or persistence of KS.

Angiomotins (Amots) are a family of adapter proteins that modulate cellular polarity, differentiation, proliferation, and migration. Amot family members also have a characteristic lipid-binding domain, the coiled coil homology (ACCH) domain that selectively targets the protein to membranes, which has been directly linked to its regulatory role in the cell. Several spot blot assays were used to validate the regions of the domain that participate in its membrane association, deformation, and vesicle fusion activity, which suggested the need for a structure to define the mechanism. Therefore, we endeavored to understand the structure-function relationship of this domain with the desire to find ways to modulate these signaling pathways. After many failed attempts to crystallize the ACCH domain of each of the Amot family members for structural analysis, we decided to pursue homologous models that could be refined using small angle x-ray scattering data. Theoretical models were produced using the homology software SWISS-MODEL and threading software I-TASSER and LOMETS, followed by comparison to SAXS data for model selection and refinement. As a result, we present a theoretical model of the domain that is driven by alpha helices and short random coil regions. These alpha helical regions form a classic dimer interface followed by two wide spread legs that we predict to be the lipid binding interface.

Ice nucleating particles (INPs) influence cloud properties and can affect the overall precipitation efficiency. Developing a parameterization of INPs in global climate models has proven challenging. More INP measurements – including studies of their spatial distribution, sources and sinks, and fundamental freezing mechanisms – must be conducted in order to further improve INP parameterizations. In this paper, an immersion mode INP measurement technique is modified and automated using a software-controlled, real-time image stream designed to leverage optical changes of water droplets to detect freezing events. For the first time, heat transfer properties of the INP measurement technique are characterized using a finite-element-analysis-based heat transfer simulation to improve accuracy of INP freezing temperature measurement. The heat transfer simulation is proposed as a tool that could be used to explain the sources of bias in temperature measurements in INP measurement techniques and ultimately explain the observed discrepancies in measured INP freezing temperatures between different instruments. The simulation results show that a difference of +8.4 °C between the well base temperature and the headspace gas results in an up to 0.6 °C stratification of the aliquot, whereas a difference of +4.2 °C or less results in a thermally homogenous water volume within the error of the thermal probe, ±0.2 °C. The results also show that there is a strong temperature gradient in the immediate vicinity of the aliquot, such that without careful placement of temperature probes, or characterization of heat transfer properties of the water and cooling environment, INP measurements can be biased toward colder temperatures. Based on a modified immersion mode technique, the Automated Ice Spectrometer (AIS), measurements of the standard test dust illite NX are reported and compared against six other immersion mode droplet assay techniques featured in Hiranuma et al. (2015) that used wet suspensions. AIS measurements of illite NX INP freezing temperatures compare reasonably with others, falling within the 5 °C spread in reported spectra. The AIS as well as its characterization of heat transfer properties allows higher confidence in accuracy of freezing temperature measurement, allows higher throughput of sample analysis, and enables disentanglement of the effects of heat transfer rates on sample volumes from time dependence of ice nucleation.

This measurement is performed with the MicroBooNE detector, an 85 ton active mass liquid argon time projection chamber exposed to the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab. This result on argon is compared to past measurements on lighter nuclei to investigate the scaling assumptions used in models of the production and transport of pions in neutrino-nucleus scattering. The techniques used are an important demonstration of the successful reconstruction and analysis of neutrino interactions producing electromagnetic final states using a liquid argon time projection chamber operating at the Earth's surface.

[Image: see text] The family of Angiomotin (Amot) proteins regulate several biological pathways associated with cellular differentiation, proliferation, and migration. These adaptor proteins target proteins to the apical membrane, actin fibers, or the nucleus. A major function of the Amot coiled-coil homology (ACCH) domain is to initiate protein interactions with the cellular membrane, particularly those containing phosphatidylinositol lipids. The work presented in this article uses several ACCH domain lysine/arginine mutants to probe the relative importance of individual residues for lipid binding. This identified four lysine and three arginine residues that mediate full lipid binding. Based on these findings, three of these residues were mutated to glutamates in the Angiomotin 80 kDa splice form and were incorporated into human mammary cell lines. Results show that mutating three of these residues in the context of full-length Angiomotin reduced the residence of the protein at the apical membrane. These findings provide new insight into how the ACCH domain mediates lipid binding to enable Amot proteins to control epithelial cell growth.

Phosphatidylinositol (PI) lipids are necessary for many cellular signaling pathways of membrane associated proteins, such as angiomotin (Amot). The Amot family regulates cellular polarity, growth, and migration. Given the low concentration of PI lipids in these membranes, it is likely that such protein−membrane interactions are stabilized by lipid domains or small lipid clusters. By small-angle X-ray scattering, we show that nonphosphorylated PI lipids induce lipid demixing in ternary mixtures of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), likely because of preferential interactions between the head groups of PE and PI. These results were obtained in the presence of buffer containing tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid, NaCl, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, dithiothreitol, and benzamidine at pH 8.0 that in previous work showed an ability to cause PC to phase separate but are necessary to stabilize Amot for in vitro experimentation. Collectively, this provided a framework for determining the effect of Amot on lipid organization. Using fluorescence spectroscopy, we were able to show that the association of Amot with this lipid platform causes significant reorganization of the lipid into a more homogenous structure. This reorganization mechanism could be the basis for Amot membrane association and fusogenic activity previously described in the literature and should be taken into consideration in future protein−membrane interaction studies.

Immersion freezing is the most relevant heterogeneous ice nucleation mechanism through which ice crystals are formed in mixed-phase clouds. In recent years, an increasing number of laboratory experiments utilizing a variety of instruments have examined immersion freezing activity of atmospherically relevant ice-nucleating particles. However, an intercomparison of these laboratory results is a difficult task because investigators have used different ice nucleation (IN) measurement methods to produce these results. A remaining challenge is to explore the sensitivity and accuracy of these techniques and to understand how the IN results are potentially influenced or biased by experimental parameters associated with these techniques. Within the framework of INUIT (Ice Nuclei Research Unit), we distributed an illite-rich sample (illite NX) as a representative surrogate for atmospheric mineral dust particles to investigators to perform immersion freezing experiments using different IN measurement methods and to obtain IN data as a function of particle concentration, temperature (T), cooling rate and nucleation time. A total of 17 measurement methods were involved in the data intercomparison. Experiments with seven instruments started with the test sample pre-suspended in water before cooling, while 10 other instruments employed water vapor condensation onto dry-dispersed particles followed by immersion freezing. The resulting comprehensive immersion freezing data set was evaluated using the ice nucleation active surface-site density, ns, to develop a representative ns(T) spectrum that spans a wide temperature range (−37 °C < T < −11 °C) and covers 9 orders of magnitude in ns. In general, the 17 immersion freezing measurement techniques deviate, within a range of about 8 °C in terms of temperature, by 3 orders of magnitude with respect to ns. In addition, we show evidence that the immersion freezing efficiency expressed in ns of illite NX particles is relatively independent of droplet size, particle mass in suspension, particle size and cooling rate during freezing. A strong temperature dependence and weak time and size dependence of the immersion freezing efficiency of illite-rich clay mineral particles enabled the ns parameterization solely as a function of temperature. We also characterized the ns(T) spectra and identified a section with a steep slope between −20 and −27 °C, where a large fraction of active sites of our test dust may trigger immersion freezing. This slope was followed by a region with a gentler slope at temperatures below −27 °C. While the agreement between different instruments was reasonable below ~ −27 °C, there seemed to be a different trend in the temperature-dependent ice nucleation activity from the suspension and dry-dispersed particle measurements for this mineral dust, in particular at higher temperatures. For instance, the ice nucleation activity expressed in ns was smaller for the average of the wet suspended samples and higher for the average of the dry-dispersed aerosol samples between about −27 and −18 °C. Only instruments making measurements with wet suspended samples were able to measure ice nucleation above −18 °C. A possible explanation for the deviation between −27 and −18 °C is discussed. Multiple exponential distribution fits in both linear and log space for both specific surface area-based ns(T) and geometric surface area-based ns(T) are provided. These new fits, constrained by using identical reference samples, will help to compare IN measurement methods that are not included in the present study and IN data from future IN instruments.

Ice nucleation has previously been described in only a few lichens from a single location. Here we greatly extend this work and suggest that in lichens ice nucleation is a water harvesting adaption. Fifty-seven lichen samples from a variety of widespread locations were tested for ice nucleation by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Samples initiated freezing in the range -5.1° to -20°C and the median freezing temperature was -7.2°C. The vapour pressure difference between ice and water is significant at this temperature, and so ice grows at the expense of water (Bergeron—Findeisen process). Therefore, the ability to form ice at these temperatures provides a useful water-harvesting mechanism for lichens. Ice nucleation appears to be ubiquitous in lichens and is more likely to be associated with the mycobiont and may influence atmospheric processes.

Precipitation chemistry can provide unique insights into the composition of aerosol particles involved in precipitation processes. Until recently, precipitation chemistry studies focused predominantly on soluble components. Analyzing the single particle insoluble components in addition to soluble ions in precipitation can provide detailed information on the individual particles originally in the cloud or removed by precipitation as well as the source of the aerosols. Herein, we present an in-depth analysis of resuspended residues from precipitation samples collected at a remote site in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California during the 2009–2011 winter seasons. In addition, we present results from laboratory control experiments of dust, leaf litter, smoke, and sea salt samples that were conducted to better understand how insoluble and soluble residues are distributed during the atomization process and aid in the classification of the residue compositions in the precipitation samples. Further, immersion freezing ice nuclei (IN) measurements of insoluble residues from precipitation water enabled the determination of residue types that likely seeded clouds. Long-range transported dust mixed with biological material tended to be more IN active, while purely biological residues contained a variety of high and low temperature IN. Overall, results from this study can be used as a benchmark for classification of insoluble precipitation residues in future studies. Knowledge of the precipitation chemistry of insoluble residues coupled with meteorological and cloud microphysical measurements will ultimately improve our understanding of the link between aerosols, clouds, and precipitation.

Recent literature has shown that buffers affect the interaction between lipid bilayers through a mechanism that involves van der Waals forces, electrostatics, hydration forces and membrane bending rigidity. This letter shows an additional peculiar effect of buffers on the mixed chain 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) lipid bilayers, namely phase coexistence similar to what was reported by Rappolt et al. for alkali chlorides. The data presented suggest that one phase appears to dehydrate below the value in pure water, while the other phase swells as the concentration of buffer is increased. However, since the two phases must be in osmotic equilibrium with one another, this behavior challenges theoretical models of lipid interactions.

Vapor-deposited amorphous solid water (ASW) is the most abundant solid molecular material in space, where it plays a direct role in both the formation of more complex chemical species and the aggregation of icy materials in the earliest stages of planet formation. Nevertheless, some of its low temperature physics such as the collapse of the micropore network upon heating are still far from being understood. Here we characterize the nature of the micropores and their collapse using neutron scattering of gram-quantities of D2O-ASW of internal surface areas up to 230 ± 10 m(2) g(-1) prepared at 77 K. The model-free interpretation of the small-angle scattering data suggests micropores, which remain stable up to 120-140 K and then experience a sudden collapse. The exact onset temperature to pore collapse depends on the type of flow conditions employed in the preparation of ASW and, thus, the specific surface area of the initial deposit, whereas the onset of crystallization to cubic ice is unaffected by the flow conditions. Analysis of the small-angle neutron scattering signal using the Guinier-Porod model suggests that a sudden transition from three-dimensional cylindrical pores with 15 Å radius of gyration to two-dimensional lamellae is the mechanism underlying the pore collapse. The rather high temperature of about 120-140 K of micropore collapse and the 3D-to-2D type of the transition unraveled in this study have implications for our understanding of the processing and evolution of ices in various astrophysical environments.

Distinct lipid environments, including lipid rafts, are increasingly recognized as a crucial factor affecting membrane protein function in plasma membranes. Unfortunately, an understanding of their role in membrane protein activation and oligomerization has remained elusive due to the challenge of characterizing these often small and transient plasma membrane heterogeneities in live cells. To address this difficulty, we present an experimental model membrane platform based on polymer-supported lipid bilayers containing stable raft-mimicking domains (type I) and homogeneous cholesterol-lipid mixtures (type II) into which transmembrane proteins are incorporated (α(v)β(3) and α(5)β(1) integrins). These flexible lipid platforms enable the use of confocal fluorescence spectroscopy, including the photon counting histogram method, in tandem with epifluorescence microscopy to quantitatively probe the effect of the binding of native ligands from the extracellular matrix ligands (vitronectin and fibronectin for α(v)β(3) and α(5)β(1), respectively) on domain-specific protein sequestration and on protein oligomerization state. We found that both α(v)β(3) and α(5)β(1) sequester preferentially to nonraft domains in the absence of extracellular matrix ligands, but upon ligand addition, α(v)β(3) sequesters strongly into raft-like domains and α(5)β(1) loses preference for either raft-like or nonraft-like domains. A corresponding photon counting histogram analysis showed that integrins exist predominantly in a monomeric state. No change was detected in oligomerization state upon ligand binding in either type I or type II bilayers, but a moderate increase in oligomerization state was observed for increasing concentrations of cholesterol. The combined findings suggest a mechanism in which changes in integrin sequestering are caused by ligand-induced changes in integrin conformation and/or dynamics that affect integrin-lipid interactions without altering the integrin oligomerization state.

Fusarium virguliforme is the cause of sudden death syndrome in soybean. Physiological variability among isolates of the fungus is unknown. One way to measure physiologic variability is to analyze growth on different carbon sources. The carbon source utilization profiles of 18 F. virguliforme isolates were examined using the Biolog FF 96-well microplate, which contains 95 different carbon sources. The utilization of dextrin, d-mannitol, maltotriose, d-lactic acid methyl ester, N-acetyl-d-galactosamine, salicin, d-trehalose, and l-alanine differed significantly among isolates (P = 0.05). Carbon sources were grouped into 3 clusters based on their ability to promote growth of F. virguliforme, after calculating Euclidean distances among them. About 12% of the carbon sources promoted a high amount of mycelial growth, 39% promoted a medium amount of growth, and 49% promoted a low amount of mycelial growth; the latter was not significantly different from the water blank control. A hierarchical tree diagram was produced for the 18 isolates based on their carbon source utilization profiles using Ward’s hierarchical analysis method. Two main clusters of isolates were formed. One cluster represented greater average mycelial growth on all of the carbon sources than the other cluster. In this study, variability in carbon source utilization among F. virguliforme isolates was evident, but the results were not associated with geographic origin of the isolates, year collected, or published data on aggressiveness. Additional research is needed to determine if these carbon utilization profiles are associated with other biological characteristics, like spore germination, propagule formation, and saprophytic competitiveness.

The effect of temperature and transient addition of H2 on the NOx–SCR reaction was investigated over a 2-wt.% Ag/Al2O3 catalyst using isotopically labelled 15NO. The addition and removal of hydrogen had a marked effect on the nitrogen balance at temperatures ranging from 245 to 400 °C. At a low temperature (245 °C), the addition of hydrogen resulted in the storage of NOx, whereas, the reverse was true at 400 °C, where NOx was stored upon removal of hydrogen from the feed. The transient NOx storage effect could be harnessed to allow continuous high NOx conversion with intermittent hydrogen addition. In particular, an average NOx conversion of 79% could be achieved during transient experiments in which H2 was switched in and out of the feed in 6-s intervals at 300 °C.

The quenching of perdeuterated naphthalene by paramagnetic ions in solid matrices of ethyl alcohol is observed by us. The results show that the decay curves are not exponential and the decay rate depends on the concentrations of paramagnetic ions. To interpret the experimental data, we assume as with Hoijtink that the interaction between the triplet state molecule and the paramagnetic ion is of the exchange type interaction. Theoretical expressions for decay function, relative yield, mean duration etc., are derived. The theoretical expressions derived correlate the experimental data very well.

This is a compilation of several studies that were performed to address specific grower concerns or questions about onion fertilization, to assess onion fertility, to make adjustments in soil test recommendations, and to test specific fertilizers for clients covering the 1999–2000 to 2004–2005 seasons. The synthesis of these studies was to evaluate levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) fertilizers and their effect on yield, graded yield, and leaf tissue nutrient status in short-day onions over 6 years. In addition, various fertilizers were evaluated for their effect on these parameters. There was a significant increasing quadratic effect on yield from increasing N fertilizer from 0 to 336 kg·ha−1 with an R2 of 0.926. Maximum calculated yield was at 263 kg·ha−1 N fertilizer; however, the yield at this rate did not differ, based on a Fisher's least significant difference (P ≤ 0.05), from our current recommendations of 140 to 168 kg·ha−1 N. Jumbo (7.6 cm or greater) yield performed in a similar fashion. Phosphorus fertilizer rates from 0 to 147 kg·ha−1 had no effect on total yield, but did affect jumbo yields, which decreased linearly with an R2 of 0.322. Evaluations of P fertilizer in the 2001–2002 and 2002–2003 seasons only, when the exact same P fertilizer rates were used, showed a decreasing quadratic effect for jumbo yields with the lowest jumbo yields at 83 kg·ha−1 P fertilizer and jumbo yields increasing with 115 and 147 kg·ha−1 P fertilizer rates. Potassium fertilizer rates from 0 to 177 kg·ha−1 had a quadratic affect on total yield, with the highest yield of 52,361 kg·ha−1 with 84 kg·ha−1 K fertilizer rate. As would be expected, N and P fertilizer rates affected leaf tissue N and P levels, respectively. In addition, N fertilizer rates affected leaf tissue calcium (Ca) and sulfur levels. Potassium fertilizer rates had a significant linear effect on leaf tissue K 3 of 6 years. In addition, K fertilizer rates had a significant effect on leaf tissue P levels. Several fertilizers, including Ca(NO3)2 and NH4NO3, along with complete fertilizers and liquid fertilizers, were used as part of a complete fertilizer program and showed no differences for total yield or jumbo yield 4 of 5 years of evaluation when applied to supply the same amount of N fertilizer. Based on the results of this study, soil test P and K recommendations for onions in Georgia have been cut 25% to 50% across the range of soil test levels.

The H 2 -assisted hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction (HC-SCR) of NO x was investigated using fast transient kinetic analysis coupled with isotopically labelled 15 NO. This allowed monitoring of the evolution of products and reactants during switches of H 2 in and out of the SCR reaction mix. The results obtained with a time resolution of less than 1 s showed that the effect on the reaction of the removal or addition of H 2 was essentially instantaneous. This is consistent with the view that H 2 has a direct chemical effect on the reaction mechanism rather than a secondary one through the formation of “active” Ag clusters. The effect of H 2 partial pressure was investigated at 245 °C, it was found that increasing partial pressure of H 2 resulted in increasing conversion of NO and octane. It was also found that the addition of H 2 at 245 °C had different effects on the product distribution depending on its partial pressure. The change of the nitrogen balance over time during switches in and out of hydrogen showed that significant quantities of N-containing species were stored when hydrogen was introduced to the system. The positive nitrogen balance on removal of H 2 from the gas phase showed that these stored species continued to react after removal of hydrogen to form N 2 .

The sulphur tolerance and thermal stability of a 2 wt% Ag/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was investigated for the H2-promoted SCR of NOx with octane and toluene. The aged catalyst was characterised by XRD and EXAFS analysis. It was found that the effect of ageing was a function of the gas mix and temperature of ageing. At high temperatures (800 °C) the catalyst deactivated regardless of the reaction mix. EXAFS analysis showed that this was associated with the Ag particles on the surface of the catalyst becoming more ordered. At 600 and 700 °C, the deactivating effect of ageing was much less pronounced for the catalyst in the H2-promoted octane-SCR reaction and ageing at 600 °C resulted in an enhancement in activity for the reaction in the absence of H2. For the toluene + H2-SCR reaction the catalyst deactivated at each ageing temperature. The effect of addition of low levels of sulphur (1 ppm SO2) to the feed was very much dependent on the reaction temperature. There was little deactivation of the catalyst at low temperatures (≤235 °C), severe deactivation at intermediate temperatures (305 and 400 °C) and activation of the catalyst at high temperatures (>500 °C). The results can be explained by the activity of the catalyst for the oxidation of SO2 to SO3 and the relative stability of silver and aluminium sulphates. The catalyst could be almost fully regenerated by a combination of heating and the presence of hydrogen in the regeneration mix. The catalyst could not be regenerated in the absence of hydrogen.

The current study reports on the layer-by-layer assembly of a polymer-tethered lipid multi-bilayer stack using the iterative addition and roll out of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) containing constituents with thiol and maleimide functional groups, respectively. Confocal microscopy and photobleaching experiments confirm stack integrity and stability over time, as well as the lateral fluidity of individual bilayers within the stacks. Complementary wide-field single molecule fluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy experiments show that increasing bilayer-substrate distances are associated with changes in lipid lateral mobility and bilayer morphology. Importantly, the described iterative approach can be employed to assemble multi-bilayer stacks with more than two bilayers, thus further reducing the influence of the underlying solid substrate on membrane behavior. Furthermore, the presence of lipopolymers within the multi-bilayer stacks results in fascinating membrane dynamics and organization properties, with interesting parallels to those found in plasma membranes. In that sense, the described multi-bilayer architecture represents an attractive model membrane platform for a variety of different biophysical studies.

Few data exist on direct greenhouse gas emissions from pen manure at beef feedlots. However, emission inventories attempt to account for these emissions. This study used a large chamber to isolate N2O and CH4 emissions from pen manure at two Australian commercial beef feedlots (stocking densities, 13-27 m(2) head) and related these emissions to a range of potential emission control factors, including masses and concentrations of volatile solids, NO3-, total N, NH4+, and organic C (OC), and additional factors such as total manure mass, cattle numbers, manure pack depth and density, temperature, and moisture content. Mean measured pen N2O emissions were 0.428 kg ha(-1) d(-1) (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.252-0.691) and 0.00405 kg ha(-1) d(-1) (95% CI, 0.00114-0.0110) for the northern and southern feedlots, respectively. Mean measured CH4 emission was 0.236 kg ha(-1) d(-1) (95% CI, 0.163-0.332) for the northern feedlot and 3.93 kg ha(-1) d(-1) (95% CI, 2.58-5.81) for the southern feedlot. Nitrous oxide emission increased with density, pH, temperature, and manure mass, whereas negative relationships were evident with moisture and OC. Strong relationships were not evident between N2O emission and masses or concentrations of NO3- or total N in the manure. This is significant because many standard inventory calculation protocols predict N2O emissions using the mass of N excreted by the animal.

A new type of extremity dosemeter, which incorporates the Harshaw TLD EXTRAD dosemeter element into a PVC finger stall, has been developed. The dosemeter uses high-sensitivity lithium fluoride, (7)LiF:Mg,Cu,P (TLD-700H) in a thin 7 mg cm(-2) layer, with alternative coverings of PVC at 10 mg cm(-2) and aluminised polyester at 3.2 mg cm(-2). Results are presented of the type testing of both versions of the finger stall dosemeter against published standards.
