A design strategy was adopted in which hydrogen bonding allows the combination of the pi-stacking tendency of melamine and the lateral interaction capability of V-shaped molecules, which was extensively demonstrated through nematic, smectic, or columnar mesophases. The results allowed proposing a helical columnar model for the mesophase originated from a propeller-like conformation of the supramolecular complexes.

A simple strategy is described for the induction of chiral mesomorphic superstructures through noncovalent association between functionalized monomers. The introduction of a suitable chiral diacid, (R)-3-methyladipic acid, is responsible for the formation of H-bonds that preserve the structural integrity of this organization through the formation of a supramolecular polymeric structure.

The cation complexation force of 18-crown-6 is measured in ethanol by means of atomic force microscopy using probe tips and mica substrates modified chemically with 18-crown-6 and ammonium ion, respectively. The specific complexation force is suppressed by free potassium ion in the measurement solution.

A concise synthesis of (+)-geissoschizine, a biosynthetic precursor of a variety of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids, from D-tryptophan is performed as a critical prelude to achieving the first biomimetic, enantioslective synthesis of the sarpagine alkaloid (+)-Na-methylvellosimine. The approach to (+)-geissonschizine is designed to address the dual problems of stereocontrolled formation of the E-ethylidene moiety.

The synthesis and characterization of a new nanostructured platinum/tin/telluride inorganic/surfactant composite is reported. The material is synthesized from soluble SnTe4(super 4-) clusters and is shown to have well-defined nanometer scale periodicity along with unique optical properties.

A significant example of a successful combination of coordination chemistry and liquid crystal self-organization processes to achieve and control supramolecular helical architectures.

Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of altering the position and environment of a stereogenic center bound to the promesogenic monomers of chemical systems and to the function of synthetic polymers and helical liquid crystals. It was observed that polymers with stable optically active helical structures were not free to reorient themselves after their formation. Moreover, evidence has been gathered concerning the role of noncovalent interactions in the polymerization process.

The synthesis of ferroelectric and mesogenic properties of 11 compounds in five series of chiral oxazoline derivatives I(OH), I(H), II(H), and III(OH) is described. The spectroscopic research indicates the relationship between the molecular structure and ferroelectric properties of the oxazoline derivatives, and analyzes H-bonded and non-H-bonded phenyloxazoline moieties. The research of aryloxazolines as chiral moieties in FLC dopants indicates that the intramolecular H-bond between the nitrogen atom and the hydroxyl group of the oxazoline ring has an important role in improving ferroelectric properties of the chiral oxazoline derivatives.

Chiral promesogenic monomers, such as chiral isocyanides, can be induced to undergo polymerization under certain conditions to yield synthetic polymers that are predominantly one-handed with helical conformations. The polymerization of isocyanides having a stereogenic center configuration yields optically active polyisocyanides. Polymers with predominantly one-handed helical conformations are made from chiral moieties having either directly or very closely attached polymerizable groups. Stereoisomers of 4'-(1-methylheptoxy)phenyl 4-isocyanobenzoate were polymerized in the presence of NiCl2 hexahydrate to yield optically active polymers.

A new class of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) bearing improved second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore p-nitro-p'-(dialkylamino)-azobenzene along the polar axis has been synthesized. These FLCs contain large NLO susceptibility. The dye transition dipole is oriented parallel to the liquid crystal director to enhance the supramolecular stereochemistry and increase the susceptibility values. This was achieved by positioning the dye chromophore parallel to the director component.
