In this study, lead-free zirconium (Zr)-modified Bi1/2(Na0.78K0.22)1/2TiO3 (BNKT) ceramics were synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction method. The co-existence of two phases (tetragonal; P4mm and cubic phases; Pm 3 ‾ m) with definite phase fractions were observed for all samples. The lattice parameters were gradually enhanced by the addition of Zr-content in the BNKT ceramics, which strongly support the relaxor-ferroelectric response. All of the samples are well-dense with no noticeable pores detected. Definite grains with clear grain boundaries were observed through SEM analysis. The temperature-dependent (25–200 °C) ferroelectric polarization response of all specimens were studied in detail under the constant applied electric field (60 kV cm-1). Thermally-stable high energy-storage properties (Wrec ≈ 0.72 J cm-3, and η ≈ 98%) with an extended operating temperature range (25–200 °C) within ±15% variation was observed for the Zr-modified BNKT composition. The enhancement of energy-storage properties can be attributed to the Zr addition, which increased the phase fraction of cubic crystal structure and assisted the ferroelectric to relaxor-ferroelectric phase transition. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the energy-storage response of the lead-free ceramics for energy-storage devices.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of low protein diets added with protease on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and blood profiles of weaned piglets and growing-finishing pigs. A total of 96 weaned pigs ([Yorkshire × Landrace] × Duroc) with average body weight (BW) of 6.99 ± 0.21 kg were used in a 20-week experiment. The dietary treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial design. Treatments were as follows: In phase 1 (1–2 weeks), two protein levels as high protein (HP; 19.0%), low protein (LP; 17.0%), and three protease (PT) levels (PT0, 0%; PT1, 0.3%; and PT2, 0.5%); in phase 2 (3–4 weeks), protein levels (HP, 18.05%; LP, 16.15%) and protease levels (0%, 0.3%, and 0.5%); in phase 3 (5–12 weeks), protein levels (HP, 17.1%; LP, 15.3%) and protease level (0%, 0.15%, and 0.3%); in phase 4 (13–20 weeks), protein levels (HP, 16.15%; LP, 14.45%) and protease level (0%, 0.15%, and 0.3%). At 4 weeks and 20 weeks after treatment, BW was higher (p < 0.050) in the PT2 group than PT0 group. From weeks 0 to 4, average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (G/F) were higher (p = 0.006 and p = 0.014; p = 0.014 and p = 0.044, respectively) in the PT2 group than PT0 and PT1 groups. From weeks 16 to 20, ADG and G/F were higher (p < 0.001 and p = 0.009; p = 0.004 and p = 0.033, respectively) in the PT2 group than PT0 and PT1 groups. Crude protein (CP) digestibility was higher (p = 0.013, p = 0.014, and p = 0.035, respectively) in the low protein (LP) group than high protein (HP) group at weeks 4, 12, and 20. At weeks 4 and 20, the LP diet group had lower (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively) blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels than the HP diet group. Therefore, a low CP diet added with protease could increase growth performance and CP digestibility of weaned piglets and growing-finishing pigs.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of crude protein (CP) and protease on nitrogen (N) utilization, nutrient digestibility, and growth performance in growing pigs. A total of six crossbred ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) barrows were individually accepted in 1.2 m × 0.7 m × 0.96 m stainless steel metabolism cages. The pigs (average initial body weight of 27.91 ± 1.84 kg) randomly assigned to six diets with six weeks (6 × 6 Latin square design). The experiment was carried out in an environment with a temperature of 23 ± 1.5°C, a relative humidity of 83 ± 2.3% and a wind speed of 0.25 ± 0.03 m/s. The dietary treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial design with two levels of CP (15.3% or 17.1%) and three levels of protease (0 ppm, 150 ppm, or 300 ppm). The average daily gain and gain to feed ratio (G:F) tended to increase (p = 0.074) with increasing amounts of protease. The low CP level diet reduced (p < 0.050) urinary and fecal N concentrations, the total N excretion in feces, and increased (p < 0.050) N retention. Different protease levels in the diet did not affect (p > 0.05) at N intake, but supplementation of the diets with 300 ppm protease decreased (p < 0.050) the N concentration in urine and feces and tended to increase (p = 0.061) the percentage of N retention retained of the total N intake. The dietary CP level did not affect (p > 0.050) the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter, digestible energy (DE), and metabolic energy (ME), but diet supplementation with 300 ppm protease showed higher (p < 0.050) ATTD of DE and ME than in the protease-free diet. Therefore, a low protein diet with protease could improve the utilization of nitrogen, thereby reducing the negative effect of N excretion into the environment while maintaining or increasing growth performance compared to a high protein diet.

In a previous study, we prepared a low-oxygen titanium powder from titanium scrap through Hydrogenation-Dehydrogenation and deoxidation in a solid-state (DOSS) process with calcium. In this study, an advanced deoxidation in a solid-state process applied titanium hydride as a raw material is proposed to shorten the time of the previous DOSS process. Compared to the previous DOSS process, the total process time was shortened, and the same oxygen reduction rate was obtained. In addition, it was confirmed that the low-oxygen titanium powder prepared this by advanced DOSS process has a superior oxidation resistance than the titanium powder obtained by the previous study.

In the proposed method, we could complete the synthesis with only 3 h of thermal treatment, which is relatively fast in comparison to the previously reported procedure, without an expensive gascontrolled chamber system. The compound comprises Re2O3 and NiO3 powders that were mixed thoroughly in a stoichiometric ratio in a ball mill for 24 h and then dried in an oven at a 100 °C. The powder mixture was quickly calcined at various temperature for at least 3 h in an oxygen gas flow compared to conventional annealing method. After calcination at 1100 °C, the detected XRD peaks matched well with peaks of the standard ABO3 perovskite structure. Moreover, EDX and FT-IR spectral analysis results confirmed that the mixture had formed stoichiometry ReNiO3. All prepared samples comprised plate-like grains with a random orientation, and their average particle size was in the range of 1 to 3 μm calculated from FE-SEM images.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of exogenous emulsifier supplementation on growth performance, energy digestibility, and meat quality in broilers. A total of 60 Ross 308 broilers were treated for two weeks. The three dietary treatments were: (CON) basal diet; (T1) basal diet + 0.1% exogenous emulsifier, and (T2) basal diet + 0.2% exogenous emulsifier. In Period 1 (0–7 days), broilers in the T2 group showed significantly higher body weight gain (BWG) (p < 0.05) and broilers in the T1 and T2 treatment groups had significantly lower feed conversion ratios (FCR) (p < 0.05). In Period 2 (8–14 days), broilers in the T2 treatment group had significantly higher feed intake (FI) (p < 0.05). Therefore, in this experiment (from days 0 to 19), BWG and FCR were affected (p < 0.05) by the T1 and T2 treatments. Additionally, the T1 and T2 treatments with added exogenous emulsifier in the broiler feed showed significantly higher energy digestibility (p < 0.05) than the CON treatment. Broilers fed the T2 diet had higher water-holding capacity (WHC) (p < 0.05) and cooking loss than the broilers fed the CON and T1 diets. Moreover, the shearing force in the meat was decreased (p < 0.05) in broilers fed the T2 diet. In conclusion, supplementation with exogenous emulsifier to broiler diets improved growth performance, energy digestibility, and meat quality. The optimal amount of exogenous emulsifier supplementation requires further investigation.

A new concept of read-out method for ferroelectric random-access memory (FeRAM) using a graphene layer as the channel material of bottom-gated field effect transistor structure is demonstrated experimentally. The transconductance of the graphene channel is found to change its sign depending on the direction of spontaneous polarization (SP) in the underlying ferroelectric layer. This indicates that the memory state of FeRAM, specified by the SP direction of the ferroelectric layer, can be sensed unambiguously with transconductance measurements. With the proposed read-out method, it is possible to construct an array of ferroelectric memory cells in the form of a cross-point structure where the transconductance of a crossing cell can be measured selectively without any additional selector. This type of FeRAM can be a plausible solution for fabricating high speed, ultra-low power, long lifetime, and high density 3D stackable non-volatile memory.

Understanding metal-to-insulator phase transitions in solids has been a keystone not only for discovering novel physical phenomena in condensed matter physics but also for achieving scientific breakthroughs in materials science. In this work, we demonstrate that the transport properties (i.e., resistivity and transition temperature) in the metal-to-insulator transitions of perovskite nickelates are tunable via the epitaxial heterojunctions of LaNiO3 and NdNiO3 thin films. A mismatch in the oxygen coordination environment and interfacial octahedral coupling at the oxide heterointerface allows us to realize an exotic phase that is unattainable in the parent compound. With oxygen vacancy formation for strain accommodation, the topmost LaNiO3 layer in LaNiO3/NdNiO3 bilayer thin films is structurally engineered and it electrically undergoes a metal-to-insulator transition that does not appear in metallic LaNiO3. Modification of the NdNiO3 template layer thickness provides an additional knob for tailoring the tilting angles of corner-connected NiO6 octahedra and the linked transport characteristics further. Our approaches can be harnessed to tune physical properties in complex oxides and to realize exotic physical phenomena through oxide thin-film heterostructuring.

We demonstrate the effect of the crystallinity of ceramic targets on the electronic properties of LaNiO3 (001) thin films epitaxially grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). We prepared two kinds of LaNiO3 targets with different crystallinity by manipulating calcination temperature (i.e., 300 and 1000 °C) in the solid state reaction for ceramic synthesis. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments of the as-sintered LaNiO3 ceramic targets clearly show that the LaNiO3 target sintered after high-temperature (1000 °C, high crystallinity) calcination is more oxidized to Ni3+ with better crystallinity than the LaNiO3 target sintered after low-temperature (300 °C, poor crystallinity) calcination. To realize giant electrostriction in BNT-based piezoelectrics, the tuning of thermotropic phase boundary (TF-R) towards ambient temperature is necessary. For the regulation of such TF-R, compositional modification approach either in the form of elemental doping or the substitution of higher tolerance factor ABO3 perovskite is usually preferred. In this study, we used a feasible approach to tune the TF-R of BNT-based system by introducing low tolerance factor ABO3 perovskite to achieve large strain response. To assess our synthetic approach, herein, a novel low tolerance factor perovskite Bi(Zn1/2Ce1/2)O3 is introduced as a chemical modifier and a ternary (0.935-x)Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3-0.065BaTiO3-xBi(Zn1/2,Ce1/2)O3 (BNT-BT-BZC) system is designed and prepared by solid state reaction method. By monitoring the temperature-dependent permittivity and tangent loss, a critical composition is detected for x = 0.015, at which the TF-R tuned down to room temperature (RT). By establishing the relationship between TF-R and electromechanical strain, the composition (x = 0.015) where TF-R situated below RT showed highest strain response (S = 0.43%) accompanied by a giant electrostrictive coefficient Q33 ˜0.036 m4/C2. The derived Q33 value is comparable to the prominent Pb-based counterparts and much higher than the reported lead-free BNT-based electrostrictors. Furthermore, favorable temperature stability in strain and electrostrictive performances is also demonstrated for the BNT-BT-BZC compound. We expect that our current work may provide a highly attractive way for the future development of lead-free electrostrictive materials.

Toward the standardization of common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) sprout extract (OBS-E), we aimed to obtain indicator compounds and use a validated method. HPLC-UVD allowed simultaneous quantification of the indicator compounds quercetin-3-O-glucuronide and ellagic acid. The method was validated in terms of specificity, linearity, precision, accuracy, and limit of detection/limit of quantification (LOD/LOQ). High specificity and linearity was demonstrated, with correlation coefficients of 1.0000 for quercetin-3-O-glucuronide and 0.9998 for ellagic acid. The LOD/LOQ values were 0.486/1.472 &mu, g/mL for quercetin-3-O-glucuronide and 1.003/3.039 &mu, g/mL for ellagic acid. Intra-day and inter-day variability tests produced relative standard deviation for each compound of &lt, 2%, a generally accepted precision criterion. High recovery rate were also obtained, indicating accuracy validation. The OBS-E prepared using various concentrations of ethanol were then analyzed. The 50% ethanol extract had highest content of quercetin-3-O-glucuronide, whereas the 70% ethanol extract possessed the lowest. However, the ellagic acid content was highest in the 70% ethanol extract and lowest in the 90% ethanol extract. Thus, quercetin-3-O-glucuronide and ellagic acid can be used industrially as indicator compounds for O. biennis sprout products, and our validated method can be used to establish indicator compounds for other natural products.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of Oenothera biennis sprout extract (OBS-E) on skin-function improvement in an in vitro system and to identify its pharmaceutically active components. OBS-E showed antioxidant ability in radical scavenging and reducing power assays, significantly inhibited matrix metalloproteinases-1 and -2, and increased the production of type I collagen, indicating its anti-wrinkle activity. Furthermore, OBS-E significantly increased the level of hyaluronic acid (HA) and the expression of moisturizing genes, such as hyaluronic acid synthase 2 (HAS2) and aquaporin 3 (AQP3), indicating it is effective in enhancing skin hydration. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (MS) analyses showed that OBS-E contained high levels of polyphenolic acids, such as gallic acid and ellagic acid, in addition to flavonoid glycosides, such as luteolin 7-glucuronide and quercetin 3-glucuronide. Our results suggest that these major phytochemicals are likely to play crucial roles in the expression of antioxidant, anti-wrinkle, and moisturizing activities of OBS-E.

Summary Nitrogen (N) is a major factor for plant development and productivity. However, the application of nitrogenous fertilizers generates environmental and economic problems. To cope with the increasing global food demand, the development of rice varieties with high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is indispensable for reducing environmental issues and achieving sustainable agriculture. Here, we report that the concomitant activation of the rice (Oryza sativa) Ammonium transporter 1;2 (OsAMT1;2) and Glutamate synthetase 1 (OsGOGAT1) genes leads to increased tolerance to nitrogen limitation and to better ammonium uptake and N remobilization at the whole plant level. We show that the double activation of OsAMT1;2 and OsGOGAT1 increases plant performance in agriculture, providing better N grain filling without yield penalty under paddy field conditions, as well as better grain yield and N content when plants are grown under N llimitations in field conditions. Combining OsAMT1;2 and OsGOGAT1 activation provides a good breeding strategy for improving plant growth, nitrogen use efficiency and grain productivity, especially under nitrogen limitation, through the enhancement of both nitrogen uptake and assimilation., Significance Statement We report that concurrent activation of OsAMT1;2 and OsGOGAT1 confers better growth and improves the grain yield and quality of rice, especially under nitrogen limitation. Thus, our approach constitutes a promising strategy for improving nitrogen use efficiency in rice.

Spin orbit torque (SOT) is essential to magnetization modulation in various ferromagnet/non-magnet bilayers. In this study, we demonstrated that SOT can be enhanced in a hybrid system composed of a perovskite oxide NdNiO3 (NNO) and a Ni81Fe19/Pt bilayer. We also find that the SOT enhancement might be attributed to spin absorption at the interface between the NNO and Ni81Fe19 layers. Our findings suggest that metal-oxide hybrid structures can be promising systems for the development of efficient spin–orbitronic devices.

Niclosamide, which is an anti-tapeworm drug, was developed in 1958. However, recent studies have demonstrated the antiviral effects of niclosamide against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. In this study, we developed and validated a quantitative analysis method for the determination of niclosamide in rat and dog plasma using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS), and used this method for pharmacokinetic studies. Biological samples were prepared using the protein precipitation method with acetonitrile. Ibuprofen was used as an internal standard. The mobile phase used to quantify niclosamide in rat or dog plasma consisted of 10 mM ammonium formate in distilled water-acetonitrile (30:70, v/v) or 5 mM ammonium acetate–methanol (30:70, v/v). An XDB-phenyl column (5 µm, 2.1 × 50 mm) and a Kinetex® C18 column (5 µm, 2.1 × 500 mm) were used as reverse-phase liquid chromatography columns for rat and dog plasma analyses, respectively. Niclosamide and ibuprofen were detected under multiple reaction monitoring conditions using the electrospray ionization interface running in the negative ionization mode. Niclosamide presented linearity in the concentration ranges of 1–3000 ng/mL (r = 0.9967) and 1–1000 ng/mL (r = 0.9941) in rat and dog plasma, respectively. The intra- and inter-day precision values were 99.8%) and low metabolic stability. These results can be helpful for further developing and understanding the pharmacokinetic characteristics of niclosamide to expand its clinical use.

PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of overactive bladder (OAB). METHODS A total of 219 subjects were enrolled and divided into 2 groups: OAB subjects (n=189) and controls without OAB symptoms (n=30). Three-day voiding diaries and questionnaires were collected, and urinary levels of nerve growth factor (NGF), prostaglandin E2, and adenosine triphosphate were measured and normalized to urine creatinine (Cr). Baseline characteristics and urinary levels of markers were analyzed. A receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the diagnostic performance of urinary markers. Urinary levels of markers according to subgroup and pathogenesis of OAB were evaluated. Correlation analyses were used to analyze the relationship between urinary levels of markers and voiding diary parameters and questionnaires. RESULTS There was no difference between the 2 groups with regards to age, sex ratio, or urine Cr (P>0.05). The urinary levels of NGF/Cr were higher in OAB subjects than in controls (P

Introduction Information on the nerve fibers innervating the dental pulp is crucial for understanding dental pain and hypersensitivity. This study investigated the morphologic differences of parvalbumin (PV)-positive (+) myelinated fibers in 3 different regions of the human dental pulp. Methods Light and electron microscopic immunohistochemistry for parvalbumin, a marker for myelinated fibers, and quantitative analysis were performed in the apical root, core of coronal pulp, and peripheral pulp of human premolar teeth. Results About 40% of the myelinated fibers in the apical root pulp became unmyelinated in the core of the coronal pulp, and virtually all the remaining fibers became unmyelinated at the peripheral pulp. The size of myelinated axons decreased from root to peripheral pulp. PV+ axons showed extensive axonal varicosities in the peripheral pulp. Conclusions These findings suggest that the myelinated fibers innervating the human dental pulp undergo extensive morphologic change in the extrapulpal region and in the coronal and peripheral pulp, and that PV-mediated regulation of calcium concentration and its downstream events may occur primarily in axonal varicosities in the peripheral pulp.

Metal-to-insulator phase transitions in complex oxide thin films are exciting phenomena which may be useful for device applications, but in many cases the physical mechanism responsible for the transition is not fully understood. Here we demonstrate that epitaxial strain generates local disproportionation of the $\mathrm{Ni}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ octahedra, driven through changes in the oxygen stoichiometry, and that this directly modifies the metal-to-insulator phase transition in epitaxial (001) $\mathrm{NdNi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ thin films. Theoretically, we predict that the Ni-O-Ni bond angle decreases, while octahedral tilt and local disproportionation of the $\mathrm{Ni}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ octahedra increases resulting in a small band gap in an otherwise metallic system. This is driven by an increase in oxygen vacancy concentration in the rare-earth nickelates with increasing in-plane biaxial tensile strain. Experimentally, we find an increase in pseudocubic unit-cell volume and resistivity with increasing biaxial tensile strain, corroborating our theoretical predictions. With electron-energy-loss spectroscopy and x-ray absorption, we find a reduction of the Ni valence with increasing tensile strain. These results indicate that epitaxial strain modifies the oxygen stoichiometry of rare-earth perovskite thin films and through this mechanism affects the metal-to-insulator phase transition in these compounds.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of replacing corn with soy hulls on nutrient digestibility of growing pigs. Three experimental diets were tested using a 3 × 3 Latin square design using three barrows per group (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc, average initial body weight of 36.9 ± 4.0 kg) in individual metabolic cages. The dietary treatments were the control (CON) basal diet (corn-soybean meal based diet), whereas in the test diets, soy hulls were included at 5% (H1), 10% (H2), gradually replacing corn. The daily feed allowance was adjusted to 2.7 times the maintenance requirement for digestible energy (DE) (2.7 × 110 kcal of DE/kg BW0.75). Intake of crude fiber (CF) was different among treatments (p < 0.05). Pigs fed with H2 diet excreted higher concentrations of dry matter (DM), and CF than pigs fed with H1 diet and basal diet (p < 0.05). Pigs fed with H1 and H2 diets excreted higher concentrations of crude protein (CP) than pigs fed with CON diet (p < 0.05). The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of CF from H1 and H2 diets were higher than CON diet (p < 0.05). Pigs fed with H2 diets were significantly lower (p < 0.05) the ATTD of CP than the pigs fed with CON and H1 diets. The current data suggest that 10% inclusion soy hulls can slightly decrease CP digestibility. However, soy hulls considerably increased CF digestibility.It is concluded that 5% soy hulls may be a usable alternative to corn in growing pig diets.

The bismuthate superconductor $\mathrm{BaP}{\mathrm{b}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ and its bismuthate heterostructure have gained much attention due to their potential applications, such as topologically protected quantum devices. To fabricate $\mathrm{BaP}{\mathrm{b}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$-based junctions or devices with atomically sharp interfaces, researchers have long searched for innovative methods to achieve coherent-strained superconducting $\mathrm{BaP}{\mathrm{b}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ films. However, the large lattice mismatches between $\mathrm{BaP}{\mathrm{b}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ and widely used perovskite substrates have been huge obstacles hindering the achievement of coherent-strained superconducting films. Here, we successfully fabricated coherent-strained superconducting $\mathrm{BaP}{\mathrm{b}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ films on $\mathrm{SrTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ substrates by inserting $\mathrm{BaCe}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}/\mathrm{BaZr}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ buffer layers. By performing both grazing-incidence in-plane x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, we demonstrated that without buffer layers the $\mathrm{BaP}{\mathrm{b}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ films exhibited fully relaxed structures with a reconstructed interface layer. With buffer layers, the superconducting transition temperatures of coherent-strained $\mathrm{BaP}{\mathrm{b}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ films were higher than that of relaxed films. Based on these interface-engineering results, this paper provides opportunities for exploring the emergent properties of bismuthate-based superconducting devices, such as quantum computing circuits.

A sulfur element is a promising anion dopant for synthesizing new multifunctional materials and for exploring unusual physical phenomena. However, owing to its volatility, sulfur substitution to oxide materials is challenging, and thus the sulfurization effects on the associated properties have been limitedly studied. Here, a facile method for sulfurization to a perovskite oxide $\mathrm{Pb}(\mathrm{Zr},\mathrm{Ti}){\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ is developed and demonstrated. A thiourea $(\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{H}}_{4}{\mathrm{N}}_{2}\mathrm{S})$ solution is used as a precursor for the sulfurization and its doping-level control. By manipulating the sulfur concentration ($x$), we systematically examine the physical properties of sulfur-doped $\mathrm{Pb}(\mathrm{Zr},\mathrm{Ti}){\mathrm{O}}_{3\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{S}}_{x}$ films. An enhancement in the tetragonality and ferroelectricity by sulfurization is observed with the band-gap reduction, which is consistent with our theoretical predictions. In the sulfurized films, the ferroelectric phonon modes become softened progressively, probably due to the substitution of apical oxygens with sulfur atoms. Our work is of practical interest for designing ferroelectric photovoltaic devices with high performances.

Background Bakanae disease is an important fungal disease caused by Gibberella fujikuroi. Incidence of rice bakanae disease creates serious problems in the foremost rice growing countries, and no rice variety has been found to be completely resistant to this disease. However, breeding rice varieties resistant to bakanae disease may be a cost-saving solution preferable to the application of fungicides. In this study, we aimed to determine the exact position and the candidate gene for qBK1, a major resistant quantitative trait locus (QTLs) for bakanae disease. Results The genotypes/phenotypes of recombinants selected from backcrossed recombinant inbred lines of two rice varieties, Shingwang (resistant) and Ilpum (susceptible), indicated that the locus qBK1, conferring resistance to bakanae disease in Shingwang, was delimited to a 35-kb interval delimited by InDel 18 (23.637 Mbp) and InDel 19–14 (23.672 Mbp). Sequence analysis of this 35-kb region revealed four candidate genes, LOC_Os01g41770, LOC_Os01g41780, LOC_Os01g41790, and LOC_Os01g41800. There were many non-synonymous SNPs in LOC_Os01g41770 and the transcript of LOC_Os01g41790 was early terminated in Shingwang, whereas there were no differences in both LOC_Os01g41780 and LOC_Os01g41800 sequences between Ilpum and Shingwang. Expression profiling of the four candidate genes showed the up-regulation of LOC_Os01g41770, LOC_Os01g41780, and LOC_Os01g41790 in Ilpum and of LOC_Os01g41800 in Shingwang after inoculation of G. fujikuroi. Conclusion Utilization of marker-assisted selection (MAS) with a precise molecular marker on qBK1 could provide an effective tool for breeding rice varieties resistant to bakanae disease. To our knowledge, this is the first report on fine mapping and candidate gene approaches for identifying the gene for qBK1. Oxide single-crystal substrates with atomically smooth and chemically uniform surfaces are indispensable for constructing high-quality epitaxial heterostructures and sharp heterointerfaces. In this paper, the authors develop a simple and efficient recipe to optimize the surface structure in LaAlO${}_{3}$ (001) single crystal, a widely used substrate for growing perovskite oxide heterostructures. The authors combine thermal annealing and subsequent deionized water leaching processes to treat the LaAlO${}_{3}$ (001) surface. Thanks to the distinct solubility between AlO${}_{2}$ and LaO surface layers, the treated substrate exhibits an atomically flat and uniformly AlO${}_{2}$-terminated surface. This method circumvents the high-temperature instability of LaAlO3 (001) surface due to the intrinsic surface polarity.

The surface and internal deoxidation behavior of hydrogenation-dehydrogenation titanium alloy powder deoxidized by Ca vapor was investigated. Comparison of the deoxidation behavior of solid solution and intermetallic alloys was performed by calculating the surface and internal oxygen concentrations. The surface O concentration of the Ti alloy powders depended on the specific surface area and the thickness of the surface oxide layer. The removed surface O concentration of the solid solution alloy increased significantly with decreasing particle size. However, the removed surface O concentration of the intermetallic alloy increased slightly as the particle size decreased. The difference in the deoxidation behavior of the surface O of the solid solution alloy and the intermetallic compound alloy occurred owing to the difference in the tendency of the specific surface area to increase with the particle size and the thickness of the reduced surface oxide layer. The internal O concentration of the Ti alloy powder was uniformly reduced regardless of the particle size, and a larger amount of O was removed from the inside of the particles than from the surface.

An effective strategy is developed to create peptide-based hierarchical nanostructures through the meniscus-driven self-assembly in a large area and fabricate antiferroelectric devices based on these nanostructures for the first time. The diphenylalanine hierarchical nanostructures (FF-HNs) are self-assembled by vertically pulling a substrate from a diphenylalanine (FF) solution dissolved in a miscible solvent under precisely controlled conditions. Owing to the unique structural properties of FF nanostructures, including high crystallinity and α-helix structures, FF-HNs possess a net electrical dipole moment, which can be switched in an external electric field. The mass production of antiferroelectric devices based on FF-HNs can be successfully achieved by means of this biomimetic assembly technique. The devices show an evident antiferroelectric to ferroelectric transition under dark conditions, while the ferroelectricity is found to be tunable by light. Notably, it is discovered that the modulation of antiferroelectric behaviors of FF-HNs under glutaraldehyde exposure is due to the FF molecules that are transformed into cyclophenylalanine by glutaraldehyde. This work provides a stepping stone toward the mass production of self-assembled hierarchical nanostructures based on biomolecules as well as the mass fabrication of electronic devices based on biomolecular nanostructures for practical applications.

Oxide heterostructures have great potential for spintronics applications due to their well‐defined heterointerfaces and vast functionalities. To integrate such compelling features into practical spintronics devices, effective control of the magnetic switching behavior is key. Here, continuous control of the magnetic coercive field in SrTiO3/SrRuO3 ultrathin heterostructures is achieved by oxygen vacancy (VO) engineering. Pulsed laser deposition of an oxygen‐deficient SrTiO3 capping layer can trigger VO migration into the SrRuO3 layer while avoiding the formation of Ru vacancies. Moreover, by varying the thickness and growth conditions of the SrTiO3 capping layer, the value of the coercive field (HC) in the ferromagnetic SrRuO3 layer can be continuously tuned. The maximum enhancement of HC at 5 K is 3.2 T. Such a wide‐range tunability of HC may originate from a VO‐induced enhancement of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and domain wall pinning. This study offers effective approaches for controlling physical properties of oxide heterostructures via VO engineering, which may facilitate the development of oxide‐based functional devices.

Tropomyosin receptor kinase A (trkA), a high affinity receptor for nerve growth factor (NGF), has been implicated in neuronal survival, neurite outgrowth and inflammatory pain. So far, the characterization of the primary sensory neurons that express trkA, and are thus potentially affected by NGF, has remained incomplete. The goal of this study was to investigate the trkA-expressing neurons and fibers in the rat trigeminal ganglion and its sensory root using light- and electron-microscopic immunohistochemistry and quantitative analysis. TrkA-immunopositive (+) trigeminal neurons varied from small to large. Double immunofluorescent staining showed that about 28%, 33% and 3% of the trkA(+) neurons coexpressed SP, CGRP and IB4, respectively. About 11% of the trkA(+) neurons also coexpressed parvalbumin. Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) in relation to prostate size and urodynamic parameters, including bladder outlet obstruction index (BOOI), presence of detrusor overactivity, and detrusor contractility, and to investigate factors predictive of HoLEP success. Methods: This retrospective analysis of prospective data included 174 consecutive patients treated with HoLEP at Samsung Medical Center from 2009 to 2013. Prostate-specific antigen, prostate size, urodynamic parameters, and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS)/quality of life (QoL) were evaluated preoperatively, while prostate-specific antigen, uroflowmetry/postvoid residual (PVR) urine, and IPSS were measured six months after HoLEP. Two definitions of treatment success were established based on the following three variables: IPSS, maximum flow rate (Qmax), and QoL index. Factors predictive of HoLEP success were identified using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: IPSS/QoL, Qmax, and PVR improved significantly following HoLEP. Ovarian carcinoma is a highly lethal malignancy due to frequent relapse and drug resistance. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are thought to contribute significantly to disease relapse and drug resistance. In this study, a subpopulation of CSCs of ovarian carcinoma was isolated and the genes differentially expressed in these cells were identified to characterize CSCs and to find candidate biomarkers. Ovarian carcinoma cells from patients were primarily cultured, and spheroid-forming cells (SFCs) were isolated. The characteristic genes of SFCs were identified through cDNA microarray and validation by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry, and the association of their expression with clinicopathologic parameters was analyzed. GSC (4.26-fold), VAV3 (7.05-fold), FOXA2 (12.06-fold), LEF1 (17.26-fold), COMP (21.33-fold), GRIN2A (9.36-fold), CD86 (23.14-fold), PYY (4.18-fold), NKX3-2 (10.35-fold), and PDK4 (74.26-fold) were significantly upregulated in SFCs compared with parental cancer cells. With validation for human ovarian carcinomas, LEF1, PYY, NKX3-2, and WNT3A were significantly upregulated in chemoresistant cancers compared with chemosensitive cancers. Rice flour is used in many food products. However, dough made from rice lacks extensibility and elasticity, making it less suitable than wheat for many food products such as bread and noodles. The high-molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) of wheat play a crucial role in determining the processing properties of the wheat grain. This paper describes the development of marker-free transgenic rice plants expressing a wheat Glu-Dy10 gene encoding the HMG-GS from the Korean wheat cultivar ‘Jokyeong’ using Agrobacterium-mediated co-transformation. Two expression cassettes, consisting of separate DNA fragments containing Glu-1Dy10 and hygromycin phosphotransferase II (HPTII) resistance genes, were introduced separately into Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA105 for co-infection. Each EHA105 strain harboring Glu-1Dy10 or HPTII was infected into rice calli at a 3: 1 ratio of Glu-1Bx7 and HPTII. Among 290 hygromycin-resistant T0 plants, we obtained 29 transgenic lines with both the Glu-1Dy10 and HPTII genes inserted into the rice genome. We reconfirmed the integration of the Glu-1Dy10 gene into the rice genome by Southern blot analysis. Transcripts and proteins of the Glu-1Dy10 in transgenic rice seeds were examined by semi-quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. The marker-free plants containing only the Glu-1Dy10 gene were successfully screened in the T1 generation.

Bakanae disease is an important fungal disease in the world. No rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties have been found to be completely resistant to this disease. To facilitate accurate, uniform and simultaneous screening of many rice accessions, we developed an inoculation method for microconidia of Fusarium fujikuroi using a tissue embedding cassette and seedling tray. Standards for evaluating the inoculated rice seedlings as healthy or unhealthy were also established. The method was fast and reproducible for accurately evaluating resistance to bakanae disease in rice.

This report details a method using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) that allows one to determine the concentration of an atypical anticancer drug, enzalutamide, in rat plasma. Specifically, this method involves the addition of an acetonitrile and bicalutamide (internal standard) solution to plasma samples. Following centrifugation of this mixture, an aliquot of the supernatant was directly injected into the LC-MS/MS system. Separation was achieved using a column packed with octadecylsilica (5 µm, 2.1 × 50 mm) with 10 mM ammonium acetate in acetonitrile as the mobile phase; detection was accomplished using MS/MS by multiple-reaction monitoring via an electrospray ionization source. This method demonstrated a linear standard curve (r = 0.997) over a concentration range of 0.001-1 µg/mL, as well as an intra- and inter-assay precision of 2.7 and 5.1%, respectively, and an accuracy range from 100.8 to 105.6%. The lower limit of quantification was 1.0 ng/mL in 50 μL of rat plasma sample. We also demonstrated that this analytical method could be successfully applied to the pharmacokinetic study of enzalutamide in rats.

Surface-adsorbed polar molecules can significantly alter the ferroelectric properties of oxide thin films. Thus, fundamental understanding and controlling the effect of surface adsorbates are crucial for the implementation of ferroelectric thin film devices, such as ferroelectric tunnel junctions. Herein, we report an imprint control of BaTiO3 (BTO) thin films by chemically induced surface polarization pinning in the top few atomic layers of the water-exposed BTO films. Our studies based on synchrotron X-ray scattering and coherent Bragg rod analysis demonstrate that the chemically induced surface polarization is not switchable but reduces the polarization imprint and improves the bistability of ferroelectric phase in BTO tunnel junctions. We conclude that the chemical treatment of ferroelectric thin films with polar molecules may serve as a simple yet powerful strategy to enhance functional properties of ferroelectric tunnel junctions for their practical applications.

Active control of defect structures and associated polarization switching in a ferroelectric material is achieved without compromising its ferroelectric properties. Based on dipolar interaction between defect dipole and polarization, the unique functionality of the defect dipole to control ferroelectric switching is visualized. This approach can provide a foundation for novel ferroelectric applications, such as high-density multilevel data storage.

Objectives : The oriental medicine Jangwonhwan, a boiled extract of 12 medicinal herbs/mushrooms, has been prescribed to patients with cognitive dysfunction, as originally described in the Korean medical text, DonguiBogam(amnesia chapter). Recently, a modified formula of Jangwonhwan (LMK02-Jangwonhwan) consisting of seven medicinal plants/mushrooms, was shown to reduce the -amyloid deposition in the brain of Tg-APPswe/PS1dE9 mouse model for Alzheimer`s disease. The toxicity of LMK02-Jangwonhwan was investigated in SD rats, by a daily oral administration for 13 weeks and NOAEL(No observed adverse effect dose), a definite toxic dose and target organ, as well. Methods : Quality control of the tablet form of LMK02-Jangwonhwan was established by estimating the indicative components, Ginsenoside Rg3 of Red Ginseng and Decursin of Angelicagigas Nakai. The toxicity of LMK02-Jangwonhwan was investigated in 6 week old, specific pathogen free (SPF), Sprageu-Dawley rats by oral administration. Each test group consisted of 10 male and 10 female rats. The groups received doses of 500, 1,000 or 2,000 mg/kg/day of test substance for 13 weeks. The clinical signs, death rate, body weight, food consumption, ophthalmic examination, urinalysis, hematological and serum biochemistry, organ weight and pathological changes were examined and compared with those of the control group. Results : The 13-week repeated oral treatment doses didn`t result in any specific symptoms or death. There were no significant changes in the rat`s weight and food consumption. Further, ophthalmic examination, urinalysis, hematological, serum biochemistry test and organ weight revealed no significant differences. Conclusions : The no-observed-adverse-effect level(NOAEL) of LMK02 for male and female Sprague-Dawley rats was determined as 2,000mg/kg/day and the target organ wasn`t confirmed. Because no significant adverse effects were observed, the target organ could not be determined.

Ultrastructural parameters related to synaptic release and their correlation with synaptic connectivity were analyzed in the low-threshold mechanoreceptive vibrissa afferent boutons in laminae III and IV of the trigeminal caudal nucleus (Vc). Rapidly adapting vibrissa afferents were intra-axonally labeled, and quantitative ultrastructural analyses with serial sections were performed on the labeled boutons and their presynaptic endings (p-endings). The volume of the labeled boutons was widely distributed from small to large ones (0.8~12.3 µm(3)), whereas the p-endings were small and uniform in size. The volume of the labeled boutons was positively correlated with the ultrastructural parameters such as mitochondrial volume (correlation coefficient, r=0.96), active zone area (r=0.82) and apposed surface area (r=0.79). Vesicle density (r=-0.18) showed little correlation to the volume of labeled boutons, suggesting that the total vesicle number of a bouton is proportional to its volume. In addition, the bouton volume was positively correlated with the number of p-endings (r=0.52) and with the number of dendrites postsynaptic to the labeled bouton (r=0.83). These findings suggest that low-threshold mechanoreception conveyed through vibrissa afferents is processed in a bouton size-dependent manner in the Vc, which may contribute to the sensory-motor function of laminae III/IV in Vc.

How plants defend themselves from microbial infection is one of the most critical issues for sustainable crop production. Some TGA transcription factors belonging to bZIP superfamily can regulate disease resistance through NPR1-mediated immunity mechanisms in Arabidopsis. Here, we examined biological roles of OsTGA2 (grouped into the same subclade as Arabidopsis TGAs) in bacterial leaf blight resistance. Transcriptional level of OsTGA2 was accumulated after treatment with salicylic acid, methyl jasmonate, and Xathomonas oryzae pv. Oryzae (Xoo), a bacterium causing serious blight of rice. OsTGA2 formed homo- and hetero-dimer with OsTGA3 and OsTGA5 and interacted with rice NPR1 homologs 1 (NH1) in rice. Results of quadruple 9-mer protein-binding microarray analysis indicated that OsTGA2 could bind to TGACGT DNA sequence. Overexpression of OsTGA2 increased resistance of rice to bacterial leaf blight, although overexpression of OsTGA3 resulted in disease symptoms similar to wild type plant upon Xoo infection. Overexpression of OsTGA2 enhanced the expression of defense related genes containing TGA binding cis-element in the promoter such as AP2/EREBP 129, ERD1, and HOP1. These results suggest that OsTGA2 can directly regulate the expression of defense related genes and increase the resistance of rice against bacterial leaf blight disease.

Ovarian cancer is a gynecological malignancy with the highest mortality. Chemoresistance is an important subject for the treatment of ovarian cancer, because obtaining significant drug resistance to the first line chemotherapy, paclitaxel, causes major therapeutic obstacles. It is essential to improve the survival rate of ovarian cancer patients by mining the biomarkers indicating the drug resistance and prognosis, and by further understanding underlying mechanisms of drug resistance. In the present study, we established paclitaxel-resistant subline (SKpac) from human epithelial ovarian cancer cell line, SKOV3, and performed comparative analysis of whole proteomes between paclitaxel-resistant SKpac sublines and paclitaxel-sensitive parental SKOV3 cells to identify differentially expressed proteins and useful biomarkers indicating chemoresistance. Proteins related to chemoresistant process were identified by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) with mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF and LC-MS/MS). Eighteen spots were differentially expressed and were identified in SKpac chemoresistant cells compared to SKOV3. The expressions of ALDH 1A1, annexin A1, hnRNP A2, and GDI 2 proteins were validated by Western blot, which was consistent with proteomic analysis. Among the selected proteins, downregulation of hnRNP A2 and GDI 2 was found to be the most significant finding in SKpac cells and chemoresistant ovarian cancer tissues. Our results suggest that hnRNP A2 and GDI 2 may represent potential biomarkers of the paclitaxel-resistant ovarian cancers for tailored cancer therapy.

284 Background: Enzalutamide (ENZ)-resistance is a clinically challaengeable issue for management of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) patients. Here, we aimed to investigate the distinct features of transcriptional expression in ENZ-resistant CRPC cells using RNA sequencing, focusing on the histone modification enzymes as AR co-regulators. Methods: We chronically treated various concentration of ENZ (1 to 40 µM) for 6 to 9 months to establish ENZ-resistant CRPC cells by using C4-2B cells. To explore the phenotypic features of ENZ-resistant CRPC cells (ENZ-R), we analyzed the gene expression patterns, particularly AR target genes, following ENZ treatment. We performed cell viability assay, clonogenic assay, apotosis assay and tumor sphere formation assay. To examine the distinct features of transcriptional expression in ENZ-resistant CRPC cells, we conducted RNA sequencing and classified the key differential expression genes (DEG) according to Gene Ontology Database. Results: ENZ-R cells showed a higher cell viability and clonogenic proliferation compared to control cells following ENZ treatment. Also, ENZ-R cells showed higher gene expression of AR target gens (KLK2, KLK3, TTMPRSS) than those in control cells after dihydrotestosterone treatment. Of note, ENZ-R cells significantly expressed full length AR as well as AR splicing variant 7. Moreover, RNA sequencing revealed that 367 up-regulated genes and 223 down-regulated genes were identified as DEG compared to control cells. We further analyzed these DEG of histone modification enzyme as AR co-regulators, and therefore; we finally determined the candidate 28 target genes of histone modification enzyme (23 up-regulated and 5 down-regulated genes). We validated the differential expression of these key histone modification enzyme genes in ENZ-R cells by using real-time PCR. Conclusions: In sum, we established the ENZ-R cells and identified the 28 candidate DEG of histone modification enzyme in ENZ-R cells by performing RNA sequencing analysis. Our study can offer the valuable information for exploring the ENZ-resistant mechanisms, particularly focusing on the imbalance of AR co-regulators.

Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), responding to noxious cold and pungent compounds, is implicated in the mediation of nociception, but little is known about the processing of the TRPA1-mediated nociceptive information within the trigeminal sensory nuclei (TSN) and the spinal dorsal horn (DH). To address this issue, we characterized the TRPA1-positive (+) neurons in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) and investigated the distribution of TRPA1(+) afferent fibers and their synaptic connectivity within the rat TSN and DH by using light and electron microscopic immunohistochemistry. In the TG, TRPA1 was expressed in unmyelinated and small myelinated axons and also occasionally in large myelinated axons. Many TRPA1(+) neurons costained for the marker for peptidergic neurons substance P (26.8%) or the marker for nonpeptidergic neurons IB4 (44.5%). In the CNS, small numbers of axons and terminals were immunopositive for TRPA1 throughout the rostral TSN, in contrast to the dense network of positive fibers and terminals in the superficial laminae of the trigeminal caudal nucleus (Vc) and DH. The TRPA1(+) terminals contained clear round vesicles, were presynaptic to one or two dendrites, and rarely participated in axoaxonic contacts, suggesting involvement in relatively simple synaptic circuitry with a small degree of synaptic divergence and little presynaptic modulation. Immunoreactivity for TRPA1 was also occasionally observed in postsynaptic dendrites. These results suggest that TRPA1-dependent orofacial and spinal nociceptive input is processed mainly in the superficial laminae of the Vc and DH in a specific manner and may be processed differently between the rostral TSN and Vc.

A novel polystyrene (PS)/clay nanocomposite was synthesized using a simple emulsion polymerization method in the presence of sodium ion exchanged montmorillonite (Na‐MMT). Prior to the radical polymerization procedure with potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator, the hydrophobic styrene monomer was intercalated into hydrophilic clay layers using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a surfactant. The FTIR spectra of the products showed the characteristic absorbance peaks of both the synthesized PS and Na‐MMT. The x‐ray diffraction patterns of the products exhibited an increase in the d 001‐spacing, pointing to the intercalation of the PS chains into the intergalleries of the Na‐MMT.
