International audience; To guarantee the blue skies for the 2022 Winter Olympics held in Beijing and Zhangjiakou from February 4 to 20, Beijing and its surrounding areas adopted a series of emission control measures. This provides an opportunity to determine the impacts of large-scale temporary control measures on the air quality in Beijing during this special period. Here, we applied the WRF-CMAQ model to quantify the contributions of emission reduction measures and meteorological conditions. Results show that meteorological conditions in 2022 decreased PM2.5 in Beijing by 6.9 and 11.8 μg/m3 relative to 2021 under the scenarios with and without emission reductions, respectively. Strict emission reduction measures implemented in Beijing and seven neighboring provinces resulted in an average decrease of 13.0 μg/m3 (-41.2%) in PM2.5 in Beijing. Over the entire period, local emission reductions contributed more to good air quality in Beijing than nonlocal emission reductions. Under the emission reduction scenario, local, controlled regions, other regions, and boundary conditions contributed 47.7%, 42.0%, 5.3%, and 5.0% to the PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing, respectively. The results indicate that during the cleaning period with the air masses from the northwest, the abatements of PM2.5 were mainly caused by local emission reductions. However, during the potential pollution period with the air masses from the east-northeast and west-southwest, the abatements of PM2.5 were caused by both local and nonlocal emission reductions almost equally. This implies that regional coordinated prevention and control strategies need to be arranged scientifically and rationally when heavy pollution events are forecasted.

Background The reported incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in China has been increasing over the last decades, especially among drug users, which has become one of the main burdens of public health in China. This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence and associated factors of STIs among non-injecting methamphetamine (MA) users in Eastern China. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 632 MA users in Eastern China in 2017. Demographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, behaviors of MA use and sexual health knowledge were collected through questionnaire. First pass urine specimens were collected and detected for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) with Nucleic Acid Amplification Technology (NAAT), while blood specimens were collected and detected for antibodies of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV-2), and syphilis with enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA). Results Among the 632 MA users, 464 (73.42%) were males, 60.92% were Conclusions This study found that the prevalence of HSV-2 and syphilis are alarming high among non-injecting MA users in Shandong Province in Eastern China. The prevention and control intervention of STIs among MA users in Shandong were needed, especially on females and MA users ≥ 35 years of age.

Background Anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) is a rare malignant tumor with increasing incidence. The goal of our study was to analyze the treatment outcome and prognostic factors of ASCC in South China in the past half‐century. Methods This study retrospectively included 59 patients with ASCC admitted from 1975 to 2018 in Sun Yat‐sen University cancer center. The clinical records and follow‐up information of all patients were collected. Survival analysis and univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed using the “survival” and “survminer” packages of R software. Results In 59 patients, 5 patients had distant metastasis at diagnosis. Among 54 M0 stage patients, 33 patients received chemoradiotherapy (CRT), 19 patients received local surgery, and 2 patients refused curative treatment and received the best supportive treatment (BST). The most common grade 3–4 acute toxicities during treatment were myelosuppression and radiation dermatitis. The median follow‐up time was 32 months. For the whole group, the 3‐year and 5‐year overall survival (OS) rates and disease‐free survival (DFS) were 71.1% and 63.6%, and 73.4% and 69.0%, respectively. Multivariate regression analysis showed that the T3–4 stage was an independent prognostic risk factor for OS, progression‐free survival (PFS), and DFS. And M1 was an independent prognostic risk factor for PFS and DFS. Patients in stage M0 mainly treated with CRT had better local control than those mainly treated with surgery (p = 0.027). For M0 patients, induction chemotherapy combined with CRT tends to prolong OS compared with CRT alone (p = 0.26). The 3‐year colostomy‐free survival for the whole group was 81.1%. Conclusions CRT is recommended as the first choice for the treatment of M0 stage ASCC. Induction chemotherapy may bring better survival benefits for some patients. Patients with ASCC in China seem to have a better local control rate, which suggested different treatment strategies may be needed in China., CRT is recommended as the first choice for the treatment of M0 stage ASCC. Induction chemotherapy may bring better survival benefits for some patients. The different failure modes of disease control required different treatment strategies in China.

We shed light on the importance of government disclosure in public emergency management. During the outbreak of COVID-19, provinces in China entered a government disclosure regime, which mandated the disclosure of the number of people infected with the virus on a daily basis. Each province also voluntarily disclosed its own virus situation. We find that various forms of province-level government disclosure generally reduced the number of trips made by the infected and sped up their diagnosis. They also raised attention paid to the virus and self-protection awareness as well as reduced mobility among the susceptible. Finally, government voluntary disclosure helped to reduce the duration of local epidemics. We conclude that government disclosure can be effective in instilling the correct human behaviors that are conducive to fighting the pandemic.

A single-dose, open-label, randomized-sequence, 2×2 crossover study was conducted in healthy Chinese adults, after fasting and postprandial, to evaluate the bioequivalence of 2 pyrazinamide (PZA) formulations. Fasting and postprandial tests were conducted in 24 cases. Test-reference and reference-test were randomly divided into 2 sequence groups, with 12 cases in each group. The concentration of PZA in plasma was determined after 0.5 g single oral PZA test and reference formulations by the high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method. In the fasting group, the 90% confidence intervals (CIs) of the 2 formulations maximum plasma concentration (Cmax ), area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) from time 0 to last detectable plasma concentration, and AUC from time 0 to infinity after logarithmic conversion were 104.8% to 121.9%, 97.7% to 101.6%, and 97.7% to 101.6%, respectively. In the postprandial group, the 90%CIs of the 2 formulations' Cmax , AUC from time 0 to last detectable plasma concentration, and AUC from time 0 to infinity after logarithmic conversion were 86.4% to 100.2%, 96% to 102%, 95.8% to 102.3%, respectively. The 90%CIs of the test/reference Cmax ratio and AUC ratio were within the acceptable range of 80.00% to 125.00% for bioequivalence under both fasting and postprandial conditions. No serious adverse events occurred during treatment with the test formulation or the reference formulation.

Southern East Asia, including Guangxi and Fujian provinces in China, is home to diverse ethnic groups, languages, and cultures. Previous studies suggest a high complexity regarding population dynamics and the history of southern East Asians. However, large-scale genetic studies on ancient populations in this region are hindered by limited sample preservation. Here, using highly efficient DNA capture techniques, we obtain 48 complete mitochondrial genomes of individuals from Guangxi and Fujian in China and reconstruct their maternal genetic history over the past 12,000 years. We find a strong connection between southern East Asians dating to ~12,000-6000 years ago and present-day Southeast Asians. In addition, stronger genetic affinities to northern East Asians are observed in historical southern East Asians than Neolithic southern East Asians, suggesting increased interactions between northern and southern East Asians over time. Overall, we reveal dynamic connections between ancient southern East Asians and populations located in surrounding regions, as well as a shift in maternal genetic structure within the populations over time.

Understanding the salt tolerance of microbial communities may help to elucidate the effects of salt concentration and other environmental factors on soil biodiversity. Here, high-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA and ITS was combined to investigate the distribution and salt tolerance of microbial communities in coastal soils and sediments near the Yinggehai saltern field of Hainan Island, China. The microbial communities in the soils and sediments of the land zone (YGHLS), the intertidal zone (YGHIS), and the inshore zone (YGHWS) were compared. PCoA of weighted and unweighted UniFrac distance revealed obvious differences in soil microbial community among different samples. ANOSIM analysis could clearly separate the three samples from each other. Three halotolerant bacteria, including Halomonas, Halobacillus and Wallemia, were found in the samples, which accounted for 0.0335 ± 0.0586%, 0.0241 ± 0.0304%, and 0.0308 ± 0.0445% of the total microbial community, respectively. The relative abundance of Trk system potassium uptake protein, Kdp operon response regulator, and Na+/H+ antiporter in the samples exceeded 0.09%, 0.06%, and 0.02%, respectively, indicating that the Trk system plays a major role in the salt tolerance of halotolerant bacteria in Yinggehai coastal soils and sediments.

Understanding long-term vegetation diversity patterns and their potential responses to climate and/or human driven processes are important for ecosystem modeling and conservation. Late-Holocene fossil pollen assemblage and associated vegetation diversity estimates provide an opportunity to explore the interactions among vegetation, climate, and human activities. A continuous 2000-year palynological record was obtained from the Beihai Wetland, southwestern China, to represent regional vegetation history, particularly the vegetation diversity changes. The results indicate that regional vegetation was dominated by deciduous broadleaved forest components (e.g. Alnus, deciduous Quercus), which showed a gradual decrease accompanied by expansion of herbaceous taxa (mainly Poaceae) after AD 800. Such progressive decline of forest was attributed to regional deforestation driven by intensified human activities, which was further confirmed by the increasing non-pollen polymorph abundance, particularly an abrupt rise after AD 1350. Vegetation diversity based on the Hill numbers ( N0, N1, and N2) showed a dramatic decline between ca. AD 200–400, which was triggered by regional fire events as shown by increased charcoal abundance from a nearby lake. The vegetation diversity reduced gradually after AD 800, especially the vegetation richness reflected by N0, revealing the transitional process from climate-driven to human-dominated vegetation changes. Minor increases of vegetation diversity occurred during Chinese dynastical transitions, probably due to reduced human activities following war-induced population crises. On the multidecadal scale, variations in vegetation diversity correlated significantly with climate fluctuations (revealed by synthesized temperature of China and stable oxygen isotope record from Dongge Cave) before AD 800, indicating a climate dominant condition. Then, the correlation between vegetation diversity and climate declined after AD 800, representing a progressive transition to human-dominant condition. In addition, the compositional turnover based on DCCA of the fossil pollen assemblage revealed a stepwise decrease, indicating reduced vegetation turnovers under anthropogenic influences.

Objective Our present study intended to examine the associations of RPEL1 and miR-1307 gene polymorphisms (rs4917385 and rs7911488) with susceptibility, glucocorticoids (GCs) efficacy, anxiety, depression, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Chinese systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Methods Initially, 1000 participants (500 SLE cases and 500 controls) were recruited for the case–control study. Then, 429 cases who received GCs were followed through 12 weeks to explore GCs efficacy, depression, anxiety, and HRQoL. We selected the iMLDR technique for genotyping: RPEL1: rs4917385 (G/T) and miR-1307: rs7911488 (A/G). Results The minor G allele of rs7911488 reduced the risk of SLE ( p = .024). Four haplotypes consisting of rs4917385 and rs7911488 were associated with SLE susceptibility ( p < .025). Both rs4917385 and rs7911488 were associated with anxiety symptoms and physical function (PF) in SLE patients ( p < .025). The rs4917385 was associated with depression and its improvement. No statistical significance was found between RPEL1 and miR-1307 gene polymorphisms with GCs efficacy. Meanwhile, additive interaction analysis showed a significant association between RPEL1 and miR-1307 gene polymorphisms with tea consumption in anxiety. Conclusion RPEL1 and miR-1307 gene polymorphisms (rs4917385 and rs7911488) might be related to SLE susceptibility in Chinese population. Additionally, the two polymorphisms were possibly associated with depression, anxiety, and HRQoL in Chinese SLE population.

To analyze the clinical phenotype and variant of SLC2A1 gene in a Chinese pedigree affected with glucose transporter type 1 deficiency syndrome (GLUT1-DS).Clinical data of a child who was treated due to delayed motor and language development and his family members were collected. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples and subjected to high-throughput medical exome sequencing. Candidate variant was verified by Sanger sequencing of his parents and sister. The genotype-phenotype correlation was explored.The child, his mother and sister had common manifestations such as delayed mental and motor development, poor exercise tolerance, easy fatigue and paroxysmal dystonia, but the difference was that the child and his mother had microcephaly and seizures, while his sister did not. A heterozygous missense SLC2A1 c.191TC (p.L64P) variant was identified in all affected members, which was unreported previously.The missense SLC2A1 c.191TC (p.L64P) variant probably underlay the disease in the proband and his mother and sister. Variability of the clinical phenotypes has reflected the genetic and phenotypic diversity of GLUT1-DS. Detection of the novel variant has enriched the spectrum of GLUT1-DS mutations.

Recently, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) released a new Global Atmospheric Reanalysis (CRA-40) dataset for the period 1979−2018. In this study, surface relative humidity (RH) from CRA-40 and other current reanalyses (e.g., CFSR, ERA5, ERA-Interim, JRA-55, and MERRA-2) is comprehensively evaluated against homogenized observations over China. The results suggest that most reanalyses overestimate the observations by 15%−30% (absolute difference) over the Tibetan Plateau but underestimate the observations by 5%−10% over most of northern China. The CRA-40 performs relatively well in describing the long-term change and variance seen in the observed surface RH over China. Most of the reanalyses reproduce the observed surface RH climatology and interannual variations well, while few reanalyses can capture the observed long-term RH trends over China. Among these reanalyses, the CFSR does poorly in describing the interannual changes in the observed RH, especially in Southwest China. An empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis also suggests that the CRA-40 performs better than other reanalyses to capture the first two leading EOF modes revealed by the observations. The results of this study are expected to improve understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the current reanalysis products and thus facilitate their application.

International audience; Rising air pollution by surface ozone (O 3) in China has induced extensive efforts to control ozone generation in major urban and industrial areas, yet mechanisms ruling the ozone production and loss are not well understood. In particular, ozone levels are strongly influenced by meteorological factors such as relative humidity, but this has been explored only in local situations, and the effect of relative humidity on ozone levels in warm seasons on a large scale in China is still unknown. Here we studied surface ozone, relative humidity, temperature, and other meteorological variables in 74 major cities in China during 2017-2018, focusing on the warm seasons in seven regions. Results show that ozone levels decrease with increasing relative humidity in all cities, with an average correlation coefficient of − 0.58, ranging from − 0.17 in Zhangjiakou to − 0.84 in Hengshui. At high relative humidity levels, above 75%, average ozone levels ranged from 44.6 to 122.5 μg m −3 , which is lower than Chinese quality threshold of hourly average ozone level of 200 μg m −3. The decreases of ozone with relative humidity were more pronounced at high temperature, above 30 °C, than below 25 °C. The increases of ozone with temperature were more pronounced at low relative humidity, below 40%. Overall, our findings reveal that mechanisms ruling surface ozone levels are similar on a large scale. This is promising to design common methods of climate engineering to protect human health.

At present, rural areas are becoming the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and it is imperative to explore a low-carbon construction and development model suitable for rural areas.In view of insufficient vitality of rural public venues, through a combination of field visits and investigations, ArcGIS spatial analysis and related mathematical statistics, the service range index and service distribution index of rural public venues are created, and Shijiaying Village, representative of the Guanzhong Plain area, is selected as an example to analyze the spatial distribution of its public venues. It is found that rural public venues present the overall characteristics of unbalanced spatial distribution, which are mainly manifested in the following aspects: first, administrative village-level public venues have small effective service range; second, there are distinctive differences in service distribution between different villages; third, rural public venues lack service in overall. Factors such as the distribution pattern of rural settlements, the location layout and type of the venues exert an important impact on the spatial distribution of rural public venues. The study is expected to provide a useful reference for the planning and construction of rural public venues and the quality improvement of human settlements in China in the new era.

Summary Transportation contributes to around one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, while also causing severe air pollution. The conversion to electric vehicles (EVs) represents a major path to decarbonize the transport sector, with potentially significant co-benefits for human health. However, the scale of such co-benefits largely remains an empirical question and lacks observational evidence. The full lockdown in China during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic provides an unprecedented real-world experiment to evaluate emission reduction potentials of a large-scale transition to EVs. Here, we utilize ground and satellite observations of air quality during the full lockdown to constrain predictions of a comprehensive chemical transport model and find that the substantial traffic reductions are near-linearly linked to reductions of PM2.5 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm) and NO2. A further extrapolation of a full conversion to EVs shows a significant reduction of PM2.5 (30%–70%) and NO2 (30%–80%) in most of China. Our findings provide fact-based evidence of potential environmental benefits generated by fully switching to EVs.

On the basis of the revitalization plans of 10 industries implemented by the Chinese government in 2009, this study analyzes the relationship between industrial policies and analysts’ earnings forecasts. We find that industrial policies lead to a decline in the accuracy of analysts’ earnings forecasts. Our mechanism analysis confirms that the uncertainties caused by these industrial policies have a mediating effect on this relationship. In view of the effects of industrial policies as a mechanism for the government to intervene in the market, the negative effects of these policies on the role of analysts and their increasing effects on uncertainties are both more significant in competitive industries.

The annual planting area of major inbred rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars reach more than half of the total annual planting area of inbred rice cultivars in China. However, how the major inbred rice cultivars changed during decades of genetic improvement and why they can be prevalently cultivated in China remains unclear. Here, we investigated the underlying genetic changes of major inbred cultivars and the contributions of landraces and introduced cultivars during the improvement by resequencing a collection of 439 rice accessions including major inbred cultivars, landraces, and introduced cultivars. The results showed that landraces were the main genetic contribution sources of major inbred Xian (Indica) cultivars, while introduced cultivars were that of major inbred Geng (Japonica) cultivars. Selection scans and haplotype frequency analysis shed light on the reflections of some well-known genes in rice improvement, and breeders had different preferences for the Xian's and Geng's breeding. Six candidate regions associated with agronomic traits were identified by genome-wide association mapping, five of which were under positive selection in rice improvement. Our study provides a comprehensive insight into the development of major inbred rice cultivars and lays the foundation for genomics-based breeding in rice.

Aim To measure nurses' turnover intention and identify associated factors in general hospitals in China. Background Understanding nurses' turnover intention is important to retain nurses, but factors associated with turnover intention require elucidation. Method A cross-sectional survey was conducted across 23 hospitals in China to investigate nurses' (N=12,291) turnover intention and its associated factors. Associated factors were explored by univariate and multilevel multiple logistic regression analysis. Results The mean total score for nurses' turnover intention was 13.97±3.63. High proactive personality score, a seriously ill family member, experience of negative workplace events, high work pressure, and high work-family conflict increased the risk for turnover intention. A low turnover intention was associated with being a non-local resident nurse, position title, high salary level, good person-organization fit and person-group fit, and high family-work facilitation. Conclusion Nurses with a proactive personality, heavy family care burden, experience of negative workplace events, no position title, and a low salary may merit special consideration. Implications for nursing management Nurses' personality traits should be further focused on, and it is important to build a nurse-oriented organization atmosphere, including protecting nurses from workplace violence, establishing friendly relationships with their families, expanding career paths.

National audience; Increasing severe and persistent ozone pollution in China has resulted in serious harm to human health in recent years, yet the precise pollution sources are poorly known because there is few knowledge on large-scale extreme ozone episodes. Here, we studied the formation of the historical orange-alert regional ozone episode in eastern China on 6 June, 2021, by combining process analysis, integrated source apportionment modelling, and chemical and meteorological data. Results show that during the pollution episode, 94% of cities in eastern China suffered ozone pollution, and 39% had dailymaximum 8-h average ozone concentrations higher than 100 ppb. This is explained by favorable local ozone formation and transports provided by the prevailing northwestern winds in the upper air, and by sinking atmospheric motions favoring the persistence of high surface ozone concentrations. During daytime, local photochemical production induced an ozone increase of 0.3–28.4 ppb/h and vertical transport induced an ozone increase of 0.4–56.1 ppb/h. As a consequence, vertical downward transport of ozone generated in the upper air by photochemical reactions aggravated surface ozone pollution. Surface ozone concentrations include 25.8–53.9% of ozone from local provincial emissions, 0–42.6% of ozone from inter-regional transports from neigh-boring regions, 4.6–23.1% of ozone from outer-regional transport, and 13.6-52.9% of ozone from boundary conditions in the selected cities. Overall, our findings show that favorable meteorological conditions promoted the chemical productions of ozone on the surface and at high altitudes, thus resulting in this heavy ozone pollution. In addition, regional and vertical downward transports of aloft ozone further aggravated the surface ozone pollution, leading to the large-scale extreme ozone pollution episode.

Introduction: We investigated cognitive function and its influencing factors in empty-nest and non-empty-nest elderly adults in China. Results: Cognitive function was better in empty-nest elderly living as a couple but worse in those living alone than in non-empty-nest elderly. Older age, rural habitation, poorer instrumental activities of daily living, and depression were risk factors for cognitive decline, while higher education was protective. Women had poorer cognitive function than men among non-empty-nest elderly and empty-nest elderly living as a couple. Among non-empty-nest elderly, those who were divorced/widowed/never married, underweight or economically active exhibited poorer cognitive function. Having two or more chronic diseases and being overweight were associated with better cognitive function among empty-nest elderly living as a couple. Conclusion: These findings suggest that cognitive function is poorest in empty-nest elderly living alone and best in empty-nest elderly living as a couple. The factors influencing cognitive function differed according to empty-nest status, which should be considered in interventions. Methods: 5549 elderly from the 2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were included in this study. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status, episodic memory tests and visuospatial ability assessments. Factors influencing cognitive function were determined via multiple linear regression analysis.

Description Générale de la Chine is an important sinology masterpiece published in France in the late 18th century. Its author Jean-Baptiste Grosier summarized and rearranged a large number of first-hand materials to systematically introduce China's national traditions and culture. A great part of this book introduced ancient Chinese medicine, which facilitated the unbiased understanding of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Europe and fostered a knowledge dialogue between the Chinese and Western medicine systems. Such content also provided a historical reference for how to promote the further going out of TCM to the world.

Species of the genus Sugiyamaella (Trichomonascaceae, Saccharomycetales), found in rotting wood in China, were investigated using morphology and the molecular phylogeny of a combined ITS and nrLSU dataset. Nine taxa were collected in China: two were new species (viz. Sugiyamaella chuxiongsp. nov. and S. yunanensissp. nov.) and seven were known species, S. americana, S. ayubii, S. novakii, S. paludigena, S. valenteae, S. valdiviana and S. xiaguanensis. The two new species are illustrated and their morphology and phylogenetic relationships with other Sugiyamaella species are discussed. Our results indicate a potentially great diversity of Sugiyamaella spp. inhabiting rotting wood in China just waiting to be discovered.

Snow cover is an important component of the cryosphere. Clouds have a large influence on optical remote sensing satellites when recognizing snow cover. Geostationary satellites, due to their high-frequency observations over coverage areas, can effectively compensate for the drawback of snow cover recognition from polar orbit optical satellites under cloud-covered conditions. However, past geostationary satellites have relatively few band settings to produce sensitive factors for snow cover recognition. The FY-4A Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager (AGRI) satellite has the advantage of high temporal resolution with a wealth of bands, which highlights its potential in reducing the impact of clouds and accurately obtaining snow cover information. Based on the advantages of FY-4A AGRI data and the flow characteristics of clouds, we developed an improved maximum brightness temperature image synthesis algorithm, which can greatly reduce the probability of cloud and snow cover misclassification. Combining the features of FY-4A AGRI data, we reorganized the snow cover recognition factor and developed a new snow cover recognition method. The results show that the proposed method can reduce cloud cover by 57.172% compared with MOD10A1 data. After evaluating the proposed method using meteorological ground observation datasets and MOD10A1 data, we found that the overall accuracy of the proposed method can reach 94.11% and 98.55%, respectively, and the F-score (FS) can reach 73.05% and 85.40%, respectively.

PurposeThe Chinese construction industry is experiencing a rapid growth these days. Due to the requirements of energy conservation, emission reduction and construction waste management, the development of prefabricated buildings (PBs) has attracted much attention in the Chinese construction industry. However, the development of PBs are still in their infancy in China, which have been negatively impacted by many obstacles. It is of great significance to clarify and analyze these obstacles for the purpose of promoting the development of PBs in China. Due to the wideness and complex features of obstacles, the existing literature exploring the research topic lacks comprehensiveness. The purpose of this paper is to systematically identify and discuss the obstacles that hinder the development of PBs in China.Design/methodology/approachThis paper adopts the method of news report analysis based on the news reports retrieved from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and nine major portals in China. The Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) method of content analysis was used to rank the obstacles according to their importance.FindingsA total of 79 obstacles to the development of PBs in China are identified, and the 79 obstacles are divided into 8 dimensions. Among the Top 20 obstacles, the government dimension accounted for the highest number of 5, the market and consumer dimension and development organization dimension were 4, Manufacturing Enterprise of Prefabricated Components (PCs) dimension, construction organization dimension and design organization dimension were 2, logistics enterprise dimension was 1, and industry association dimension was 0. Among them, the biggest obstacle is the high transportation costs.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, data collection may not be very comprehensive. Second, this paper is only based on the obstacles in the development of PBs in China, and the universality of the management conclusions needs to be further strengthened.Practical implicationsThe research results help the stakeholders in the Chinese PBs industry to better understand the barriers hindering the industry development in a systemic way, which will help propose appropriate strategies to address these barriers.Originality/valueThis paper clarifies the obstacles of China's PBs and makes an analysis, which is of great value to the development of China's PBs.

Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) mitigation relies strongly on anthropogenic emission control measures, the actual effectiveness of which is challenging to pinpoint owing to the complex synergies between anthropogenic emissions and meteorology. Here, observational constraints on model simulations allow us to derive not only reliable PM2.5 evolution but also accurate meteorological fields. In this study, we isolate meteorological factors to achieve reliable estimates of surface PM2.5 responses to both long-term and emergency emission control measures from 2016 to 2019 over the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China. The results show that long-term emission control strategies play a crucial role in curbing PM2.5 levels (> 14 μg/m3, 19 %), especially in the megacities and other areas with abundant anthropogenic emissions. The G20 summit hosted in Hangzhou in 2016 provides a unique and ideal opportunity involving the most stringent, even unsustainable, emergency emission control measures. For the winter time periods from 2016 to 2019, the most substantial declines in PM2.5 concentrations (~ 35 μg/m3, ~ 59 %) are thus achieved in Hangzhou and its surrounding areas. The following hotspots also emerge in megacities, especially in Shanghai (32 μg/m3, 51 %), Nanjing (27 μg/m3, 55 %), and Hefei (24 μg/m3, 44 %). Compared to the long-term policies from 2016 to 2019, the emergency emission control measures implemented during the G20 Summit achieve more significant decreases in PM2.5 concentrations (17 μg/m3 and 41 %) over most of the whole domain, especially in Hangzhou (24 μg/m3, 48 %) and Shanghai (21 μg/m3, 45 %). By extrapolation, we derive insight into the magnitude and spatial distributions of PM2.5 mitigation potentials across the YRD, revealing significantly additional rooms for curbing PM2.5 levels.

Background In China, the prevalence of superficial fungal infections of the foot is high and recurrence is common. However, a prospective, large-scale and multicentre study on the aetiology of superficial fungal infections of the foot is still lacking. Objectives To study the epidemiology of aetiological agents of superficial fungal infections of the foot in urban outpatients in mainland China, as well as to understand the aetiology features of the pathogenic agent. Methods The study was designed as a multicentre, prospective epidemiological survey. A total of 1704 subjects were enrolled from seven geographical areas in mainland China. For each subject, one mycological sample and one bacterial sample were collected. KOH wet mount examination and culture were performed at local laboratories. The bacterial results were only reported in those with positive mycology. Further morphological identification and, if necessary, molecular biological identification were conducted in a central laboratory. Results Of 1704 enrolled subjects, 1327 (77.9%) subjects had positive fungal culture results. The incidence of dermatophytes, yeasts and moulds was 90.1%, 8.1% and 1.1%, respectively. The most frequently isolated aetiological agent (fungus) was Trichophyton rubrum. Moccasin form was the most commonly reported clinical diagnosis of superficial fungal infections. The most frequently isolated bacterial genus in patients was Staphylococcus. Conclusion This study prospectively investigated the clinical and mycological features of human dermatophytosis in mainland China. T rubrum was the most frequently isolated fungus, and moccasin form was the most commonly reported clinical diagnosis of superficial fungal infections.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most pressing health issues in today's society. As such, it is imperative that the scientific community devise effective methods to inhibit the proliferation and metastasis of CRC cells. Ferroptosis is a recently discovered regulatory cell death mode mainly manifested by dysregulation of cellular iron metabolism and mitochondrial lipid peroxidation. ACADSB is a member of the acyl-CoA dehydrogenase. This study finds that ACADSB is lowly expressed in CRC tissues. Its expression is negatively correlated with N- and M-stage CRC but positively correlated with the overall survival rate of CRC patients. In addition, it finds that ACADSB is found in the mitochondria of cells. Overexpression of ACADSB inhibits CRC cell migration, invasion, and proliferation, while ACADSB knockdown has the opposite effect. More importantly, the study finds that ACADSB negatively regulates expression of glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase 4, the two main enzymes responsible for clearing glutathione (GSH) in CRC cells. ACADSB overexpression enhances the concentration of malondialdehyde, Fe+ , superoxide dismutase, and lipid peroxidation in CRC cells, but reduces the concentration of GSH. This is significant, as all of these are important indicators of ferroptosis. Evaluating the data as a whole, this paper speculates that ACADSB affects CRC cell migration, invasion, and proliferation by regulating CRC cell ferroptosis.

Familial cold autoinflammatory syndrome (FCAS) is the mildest subtype of cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome (CAPS) and is a rare inherited systemic autoinflammatory disease (SAID). CAPS is the consequence of a rare group of genetic disorders that are mostly reported in European and American populations, but scarcely reported in Chinese populations. NLRP3, NLRP12, PLCG2, and NLRC4 are known pathogenic genes associated with FCAS, and the aim of this study was to identify pathogenic mutations in two intact pedigrees of Chinese FCAS. We performed Sanger sequencing of genomic DNA samples from 25 affected and 32 unaffected members of the two intact pedigrees and analyzed the pathogenic mutations for their conservativeness using multiple sequence alignment tools. In addition, we reviewed previously reported pathogenic genes of FCAS and their pathogenicity classification and summarized the characteristics of different genotypes and phenotypes of FCAS. This study reported two intact FCAS pedigrees with different genotypes and phenotypes, the heterozygous mutation (p.V72M) in NLRP3 in pedigree 1 and the heterozygous mutation (p.R754H) in NLRP12 in pedigree 2. There are no reports targeting p.V72M in NLRP3 in FCAS1, and there are relatively few relevant phenotypic data on the clinical manifestations identified in previous pedigrees. Multiple sequence comparisons of NLRP3 indicate that the p.V72M mutation is highly conserved during evolution. Our study has enriched the understanding of the pathogenesis of FCAS, a rare disease especially in Asian populations. KEY POINTS: •The NLRP3 (p.V72M) variant was first discovered in the Chinese pedigree of FCAS1 •NLRP12 (p.R754H) variants are not conserved in multiple sequence alignments, but they are still co-segregated and expressed in the big Chinese diseased pedigree.

Dyslexic readers have been reported to show abnormal temporal acuity and multisensory integration deficiency. Here, we investigated the influence of temporal intervals on Chinese character-speech integration in children with and without dyslexia. Visual characters were presented synchronously to the onset of speech sounds (AV0) or before speech sound by 300 ms (AV300). Event-related potentials (ERP) evoked by congruent condition (speech sounds presented with congruent Chinese characters) and by baseline condition (speech sounds presented with Korean characters) were compared. Typically developing (TD) children exhibited congruency effect in AV0 condition, whereas dyslexic children exhibited congruency effect in AV300 condition. Moreover, congruency effect in TD children was due to enhanced neural activation to congruent trials, congruency effect in dyslexic children was contributed by neural suppression for baseline trials. These results suggested that different underlying mechanisms were involved in character-speech integration for typical and dyslexic children.

To explore whether the association of community urbanization levels with overweight incidence changes over time and varies by region.The data is from the China Health and Nutrition Survey(1991-2015). The survey applied a multistage, random cluster design to draw samples. A total of 8684 adults aged 20-64 years were confined in nine provinces(autonomous regions). Based on an urbanicity score, communities were divided into two groups: low-and high-urbanization-level groups. The nine provinces(autonomous regions) were divided into four regions, including the Coast, Central, Northeast and West. Multilevel Logistic regression models was applied to examine whether the association between urbanization levels and overweight incidence changed over time and varied by region.38.08% of respondents became overweight during the follow-up surveys. The interactions between the high urbanization level with the Coast(OR=0.45, 95%CI 0.34-0.60), the Central(OR=0.67, 95%CI 0.52-0.86), and the Northeast(OR=0.70, 95%CI 0.52-0.94) were statistically significant. The interaction between the high urbanization level and period was also statistically significant(OR=0.97, 95%CI 0.96-0.99). In 1991, the Coast(OR=0.99, 95%CI 0.77-1.26), the high urbanization level was positively associated with overweight incidence in the Central(OR=1.45, 95%CI 1.15-1.83), Northeast(OR=1.53, 95%CI 1.16-2.02) and West(OR=2.18, 95%CI 1.68-2.83), with statistical significance. In 2015, the high urbanization level was significantly negatively associated with overweight incidence in the Coast(OR=0.53, 95%CI 0.41-0.68) and Central(OR=0.77, 95%CI 0.62-0.97), while the association in the Northeast(OR=0.82, 95%CI 0.63-1.05) and West(OR=1.17, 95%CI 0.91-1.49) was statistically insignificant.There were spatiotemporal variations in the association between urbanization levels and overweight incidence among adults in the nine provinces(autonomous regions).

Objectives : To explore the associations of FKBP4 and FKBP5 gene polymorphisms with disease susceptibility, glucocorticoid (GC) efficacy, anxiety, depression, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Methods : All subjects were collected from the First and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University in Hefei, China, during 2011 to 2015. In the case–control study, 541 SLE patients and 543 controls were recruited. In the follow-up study, 466 patients completed the 12-week follow-up and then were divided into GC-sensitive and GC-insensitive groups. Genotyping was determined using Multiplex SNaPshot technique. Data were analyzed using chi-square test and univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results : rs4713904, rs9368878, and rs7757037 of FKBP5 were associated with depression in SLE patients (rs4713904, PBH = 0.037; rs9368878, PBH = 0.001; rs7757037, PBH = 0.003). Moreover, rs4713904 was associated with GC efficacy in males with SLE (PBH = 0.011). The rs755658 of FKBP5 was associated with improvement in social function (PBH = 0.022) and mental component summary (PBH = 0.028). The rs4713907 of FKBP5 was related to improvement in total score of SF-36, bodily pain, and mental component summary score (all PBH = 0.018). Furthermore, the rs12582595 of FKBP4 was correlated with general health improvement (PBH = 0.033). No associations were seen between FKBP4/FKBP5 gene polymorphisms and SLE susceptibility and anxiety. Conclusions : FKBP5 gene polymorphisms may be associated with depression and GC efficacy of SLE patients. Meanwhile, the genetic polymorphisms of FKBP4 and FKBP5 genes may be associated with HRQOL improvement in SLE patients.Key Points• FKBP5 gene polymorphisms were associated with depression of SLE patients.• FKBP5 gene polymorphisms were associated with GC efficacy of SLE patients.• FKBP5 gene polymorphisms were associated with HRQOL improvement in SLE patients.• FKBP4 gene polymorphisms were associated with HRQOL improvement in SLE patients.

The economic and social development of a country rely heavily on transportation. In China, it has become the third largest energy consumption sector and generates substantial amounts of carbon emissions. In the present study, direct and indirect carbon emissions from the transportation industry throughout China's 30 provinces during 1997-2017 were calculated. Further, to reveal the spatio-temporal characteristics of the relationship between carbon emissions and economic growth, the standard deviational ellipse and Tapio decoupling method were employed. The main results are as follows. (1) The total carbon emissions from the transportation industry increased from 132.79 million tons (Mt) in 1997 to 849.64 Mt in 2017, with an average annual growth rate of 9.72%; direct carbon emissions accounted for approximately 86% of the total. (2) Carbon emissions as well as the added value of the transportation industry had the same spatial distribution characteristics, presenting a northeast-southwest pattern during 1997-2017. Although their spatial distribution patterns were mainly in the north-south direction, the development in the east-west direction became increasingly obvious. (3) The decoupling index in the transportation industry was greater than 0.8 for most years, with an expansive negative decoupling state or an expansive coupling state. The differences in carbon emissions and economic growth between various provinces showed a spatio-temporal disparity of the decoupling states in the transportation industry. The obtained results are of considerable interest for China's policymakers to set more reasonable carbon emission reduction goals and implement targeted policies according to the carbon emission situation at a local scale.

Background The recent outbreak of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, PR China, was caused by a novel beta coronavirus, the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Purpose To summarize chest computed tomography (CT) manifestations of the early stage of COVID-19 infection and provide a piece of reliable imaging evidence for initial screening and diagnosis. Material and Methods From 10 January 2020 to 10 February 2020, we continuously observed chest CT imaging of 14 patients with clinically suspected new coronavirus infection in the two weeks after onset of symptoms. Ground-glass opacity (GGO), consolidation, reticular pattern, and ground-glass mimic nodules in each patient’s chest CT image were recorded. Results We enrolled 14 patients, of which nine patients had the infection confirmed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Five patients were highly suspected of infection. All cases had epidemiological evidence. GGO was a dominant imaging manifestation in the initial days of infection. GGO performance accounts for 40% in 1– 2 days, 90% in 3– 6 days, and 85% in 7– 10 days. With disease progression, consolidation appeared on follow-up CT. Consolidation performance accounts for 0% in 1– 2 days, 40% in 3– 6 days, and 71% in 7– 10 days. The lesions are mostly near the pleura. The number of lesions and the extent of the lesions increased as the disease progressed. Conclusion Patients with novel coronavirus pneumonia have characteristic CT features in the initial stage of infection, which can be used as an essential supplement for nucleic acid examination.

Background The objectives of present study were to examine the level of disagreement between self-reported and objective measurement of sensitization to common inhalant allergens, and to explore the potential risk factors that might contribute to this discrepancy. Methods A total of 215 children were enrolled from pediatric clinics at a tertiary pediatric center in Beijing, China. A survey questionnaires regarding self-perceived sensitization was completed by participants’ parents/caregiver, meanwhile, skin prick testing(SPT) was performed as objective assessment of sensitization. Extent of agreement between self-reported versus SPT-measured sensitization to individual allergen was calculated using Cohen’s kappa (κ) coefficient. Multivariable regression analyses were used to determine the factors associated with discrepancy between self-reported and objective measurement of sensitization. Results 119(55.3%) patients have reported to be sensitized to at least one of inhalant allergen, whereas 167(77.7%) patients had a positive skin testing response. Agreement between self-perceived and actual aeroallergen sensitization was moderate for mites(κ = 0.518) and grass pollen mix(κ = 0.451), moreover, fair agreement was observed for mold(κ = 0.316) and cockroach(κ = 0.297), respectively. There was a least agreement between perceived and actual sensitization observed for pet dander, with a kappa coefficient of 0.005. Subjects’ age, atopy history, ownership of pet may increase the risk of disagreement, moreover, background factors of informant, like: age, education level, and the relationship with enrolled subjects, were linked to the incidence of disagreement between self-reported sensitization in comparison with SPT results. Conclusion Questionnaire-based self-assessment is easy way to collect clinical information on allergen sensitization; however, the accuracy of questionnaire-derived information is more likely to be influenced by respondent’s background factors. The information from the questionnaire report is considered to be more reliable when in combination with objective assessment of sensitization, including blood IgE testing and SPT.
