The article discusses the immutability of social classes in the U.S. The quasi-official division of the population into the economic classes, high-, middle-, and low-income groups, misses the point because as a class indicator the source of money is almost as significant as the amount. The Out-of-Sight classes at top and bottom have several things in common including it is given its money, they are literally all but invisible, and their anxiety to keep their names out of the papers. Social class is defined less by bare income than by constraints, insecurities, habits and attitudes.
