To reduce energy use and achieve a low carbon production in pulp and paper industry (PPI), it is essential to improve energy efficiency in pulp and paper production. In this study, the energy savings from the PPI were estimated based on a techno-economic analysis by EAGER tool for PPI at the factory level. The structure and implement procedure were introduced initially. Two typical pulp and paper mills from China were determined to estimate the impact of selected energy efficiency technologies (EETs) on energy savings as the cases in the base year. One Factory (A) only produced paper products (i.e. corrugated paper and Kraft linerboard) while the other Factory (B) also produced market pulp besides sack paper. In totally 22 selected EETs were applied to assess their saving potential in Factory A, and 29 measures were applied in Factory B. The results show that 2290 TJ and 1179 TJ of final energy could be saved annually in Factory A and B, corresponding to reduction of 29.4% and 13.6% total energy consumption respectively for the case factories. The CO 2 reduction potential was 32.3% for Factory A compared with that of 16.6% in Factory B. It suggests that the pulp and paper mills should encouraged to use this method estimating energy saving potential, and improve their energy efficiency with suggested measures in order to reduce energy consumption and related carbon emissions further in the coming years. • Energy savings of pulp and paper production were estimated at the factory level. • A techno-economic evaluation tool was applied to access the energy savings and carbon emission reductions. • Two typical pulp and paper factories from China were investigated to estimate their energy savings in the base year. • It is useful to assess energy savings and select feasible EETs in achieving energy saving and emission reduction targets. In the past three decades, fire engineering has experienced fast development worldwide. Fire regulations for building industry were moved from prescriptive description to performance-based specification. This trend started in the UK in the 1980s and spread to other western countries. Hong Kong closely followed the UK development and adopted the approach of performance-based design (PBD) for the Hong Kong International Airport and MTR stations in the early 1990s. The Government of Hong Kong SAR formally recognised the PBD approach in the prescriptive codes of practice in the mid-1990s and developed the performance-based code (PBC) in the 2000s. This PBC was promulgated in 2011. The evolution in fire engineering impacted the fire community in Mainland China. The State Key Laboratory of Fire Science (SKLFS) was established in University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1991. Then fire science and fire engineering stepped into the fast development track. The building industry in Mainland China started to adopt the PBD approach in the early 2000s for the significant developments including large airport terminals, railway and metro stations, super high-rise buildings, and mega commercial centres. However, a structured PBC system is not available within the regulatory framework to date. Adoption of PBD approach is slowing down in recent years. This paper presents a review of fire engineering development in Hong Kong and Mainland China. An analytical hierarchy model of the impact of solar reflectance, thermal emittance, heat transfer coefficient, and heat storage coefficient on building energy consumption was established through the implementation of orthogonal design experiments. The EnergyPlus software (v9.0.1) was utilized to simulate building energy consumption across diverse climatic regions in China, providing essential benchmarks for the orthogonal design. The results of the range analysis consistently indicate that, barring regions characterized by extremely cold climates, solar reflectance emerges as the predominant factor exerting an influence on building energy consumption. As geographical latitude increases, the impact of the heat transfer coefficient becomes progressively larger, while the weight of thermal reflectance concurrently diminishes. Drawing upon the principles rooted in the gradient refractive rate theory and the concept of atmospheric window radiation, a range of high-reflectance and high-emittance cool roof coatings in various colors were meticulously developed. A spectrophotometer was employed to precisely quantify their reflectance properties, and simulations were subsequently conducted to scrutinize their energy-saving characteristics. The results demonstrate that the cool roof coatings that were developed using the methodology described in this paper exhibit substantial enhancements in reflectance, with increases of 0.24, 0.25, 0.37, and 0.35 for the yellow, red, blue, and green cool roofing materials, respectively, in comparison to conventional colored coatings. Under typical summer conditions, these enhancements translate to significant reductions in roof temperatures, ranging from 9.4 °C to 14.0 °C. Moreover, the simulations exploring the cooling loads for the roofs of differing colors consistently revealed remarkable energy savings. These savings were quantified to be 4.1%, 3.9%, 5.5%, and 5.4%, respectively, when compared to conventional coatings of the corresponding colors. China's Hot Summer and Cold Winter zone, with a 550 million population, accounts for 45% of China's building energy consumption; as such, building retrofits could offer substantial energy savings. This paper presents results from a dynamic thermal modeling study of a typical urban multistory residential building under three types of air conditioning (A/C) operating schedules. Seven energy-saving retrofit measures (external wall insulation, roof insulation, double-glazing, air infiltration control, window shading, communal staircase design, and energy-efficient A/C) were evaluated, and the retrofit strategy with the highest annual energy savings and lowest thermal discomfort was identified. This retrofit strategy was subsequently evaluated for other flats (apartments) with different orientations and positions in the typical building. The annual space-conditioning energy could be reduced by 59%–68%, depending on the flat location, orientation and A/C operating schedule. The findings were then scaled up to estimate the potential energy savings in the city of Chongqing. More than 320 multistory residential buildings were represented by 12 archetypes. Space-conditioning energy consumption was reduced by up to 58% (18.8 TWh). This work provides evidence of the potential energy savings of city-scale retrofit that could aid China in reducing building energy consumption and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It was possible to explore a wide range of refurbishment options for China's highly energy-consuming Hot Summer and Cold Winter zone with hot, humid summers and mild, chilly winters using dynamic thermal models. The simulation models developed in this paper revealed that double-glazing with air infiltration control is the most effective retrofit measure for middle-floor flats, but for top-floor flats, roof insulation is the most effective; south-facing flats consume more high energy consumption than north-facing flats. Furthermore, high-rise buildings consume less energy than low-rise buildings per square meter, and one-bedroom flats consume more energy than three-bedroom flats per square meter. This study also demonstrated the procedure to develop thermal comfort evaluation methods, A/C operating schedules, and construction parameters from literature in this climate zone when there were no standards or databases available. Findings offer a tangible, clear retrofit strategy that considers different A/C operating schedules, flat locations, and building archetypes. It can assist decision-making by practitioners and homeowners aiming to upgrade the building stock of this climate zone which covers 3.4 billion m2 with a 550 million population to reduce energy consumption and improve occupant comfort. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present a tri-optimization approach to optimize design solutions regarding the building shape and envelope properties considering their implications on thermal comfort, visual comfort and building energy consumption (EN). The optimization approach has been applied to obtain the optimal design solutions in five typical cities across all climatic regions of China. Design/methodology/approach: The method comprises a tri-optimization process with nine main steps to optimize the three objectives (thermal comfort, visual comfort and building EN). The design variables considered are four types of building shape (pyramid, rectangular, cylindrical and dome shape) and different envelope properties (insulation thickness [INS] of external walls/roof, window type [WT] and window-to-envelop surface area ratio [WESR]). The optimization is performed by using the Taguchi and constraint limit method. Findings: The results show that the optimal design solutions for all climatic regions favor cylindrical shape and triple-layer low-E glazing window. The highest insulation level of 150 mm is preferred in three climatic regions, and the INS of 90 mm is preferred in the other two climate regions. In total, 10% WESR is preferred in all climatic regions, except the mild region. When the constraint limit of lighting intensity requirement by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is applied, the rectangular shape building is the optimal solution for those with 10% WESR. Research limitations/implications: The method proposed in the paper is innovative in that it optimizes three different objectives simultaneously in building design with better accuracy and calculation speed. Practical implications: Building designers can easily follow the proposed design guide in their practice which effectively bridges the gap between theory and practice. The optimal design solutions can provide a more comfortable living environment and yet less EN, which can help achieve the sustainability requirement of green buildings. Social implications: The solutions presented in the paper can serve as a useful guide for practical building designers which creates economic and commercial impact. In addition, the theory and practical examples of the study can be used by building regulators to improve the energy-efficient building design standard in China. Atriums play an irreplaceable role within the plan of modern commercial buildings. However, the presence of skylights makes the atrium suffer from unfavorable conditions such as overheating, high energy consumption, and glare, which can be partially reduced by the sun-shading design of skylights. In this paper, we conducted a field test and questionnaire survey on the daylight quality of commercial buildings in cold zones in China to find out the current problems of daylight quality in atriums and to establish a model of commercial atrium. After the dynamic daylight and energy consumption simulation, the sensitivity analysis of daylight and energy performance is performed for the skylight and shading (SAS) design parameters under three shading types. Finally, the Pareto front solution set of optimized commercial atrium daylight, visual comfort, and energy performance for the three shading types has been obtained using a multi-objective search tool. The results show that SRR has the greatest effect on sDA, DGP, and EUI in all shading cases; while SGT has a greater effect on EUI than on daylight quality; FC has a greater effect on EUI than FV on EUI; and LS and LI have a more significant influence on daylight and visual comfort. The optimal SAS values of no shading, fabric shading and louvered shading were screened as SRR is 0.4–0.5, SGT is Double silver Low-E insulating glass; SRR is 0.5–0.6, SGT is Double silver Low-E insulating glass, FV is 0.5–0.7, FC is 0.5–0.6; SRR is 0.6–0.7, SGT is Double silver Low-E insulating glass, LS is 100 mm/125 mm, and LI is 60–70°. The rapid development of the Chinese economy has stimulated consumer demand and brought huge opportunities for the retail industry. Previous studies have emphasized the importance of estimating regional consumption potentiality. However, the determinants of retail sales are yet to be systematically studied, especially at the micro level. As a result, the realization of sustainable development goals in the retail industry is restricted. In this paper, we studied the determinants of retail sales from two aspects—location-based socioeconomic factors and spatial competition between shops. Using 12,500 retail shops as our sample and by adopting a grid-division strategy, we found that regional retail sales can be positively impacted by nearby population, road length, and most non-commercial points of interest (POIs). By contrast, the number of other commercial facilities, such as catering facilities and shopping malls, and the area of geographic barriers often caused negative impacts on retail sales. As to the competition effects, we found that the isolation and decentralization of shops in one area have a marginally positive effect on sales performance within a threshold distance of 226.19 m for a central grid and a threshold distance of 514.85 m for surrounding grids, respectively. This study explores the determinants of micro-level retail sales and provides decision makers with practical and realistic approaches for generating better site selection and marketing strategies, thus realizing the sustainable development goals of the retail industry. Windows are responsible for the largest amount of energy loss related to building envelope. Past studies on the energy consumption of windows have mainly focused on residential and commercial buildings, while few studies have explored the energy consumption of windows in educational buildings. The sizes and locations of classroom windows affect not only the building energy consumption but also the indoor environment quality, which is an issue that needs to be balanced. This paper takes a classroom in Guangzhou as the object. Under the premise of meeting the lighting standards of the classroom, two parameters—window height and sill height —were simulated in different corridors of north–south and east–west classrooms to analyse the impact of their changes on the indoor environment as well as energy consumption based on the parametric platform Grasshopper and its plug-ins Ladybug and Honeybee. The energy consumption of a number of fenestration combinations on both sides of the classroom was optimized automatically by genetic algorithm, and the sizes and positions of windows that benefitted energy savings were obtained. In the best case ~16.6% of energy consumed in a whole year can be saved compared with the worst case. This conclusion can provide a quick decision-making process for the design of window shapes for the purpose of energy savings in the early design stage of educational buildings in the Pearl River Delta such that energy savings can be quickly and clearly guaranteed in the subsequent window configuration. To promote the realization of the "dual carbon target", the implementation of rooftop distributed photovoltaic (RDPV) projects in the whole county will usher in large-scale development in China. However, comprehensive investigations into the economic benefits of RDPV projects in the whole county are still rare. This paper thus aims to evaluate the economic benefits of RDPV projects when considering multiple factors. The net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR) and payback period (PBP) were used to analyze the financial feasibility of RDPV projects. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was adopted to optimize the economic benefits of RDPV projects by calculating the different installation ratios of different building types, including industrial and commercial buildings, government buildings, public buildings, and residential buildings. A case study verified the feasibility of the optimization model of the economic benefits of RDPV projects in the whole county in China. The results revealed that the self-use ratio of power generation greatly impacted the economic benefits of RDPV projects and a single RDPV project became economically feasible when the self-use ratio of power generation was greater than 87.753%. When considering the limitations of the self-use ratio of power generation, installed capacity, and grid connection mode of different building types, compared to the single RDPV project, the economic benefits of RDPV projects on a county scale were not financially feasible based on the optimization model, which had an NPV of about −10.35 million yuan. Industrial and commercial buildings had the highest proportion of RDPV systems installed among the four building types, while residential buildings had the lowest proportion. The current results demonstrate the economic benefits of RDPV projects in the whole county, which will promote the development of RDPV projects and reduce carbon emissions in China. This paper presents some results obtained from field measurements of wind effects on a super-tall building, the Di-Wang Tower, located in Shenzhen, China. The building has 79 storeys, and is approximately 324 m high. Simultaneous and continuous data on wind speed, wind direction and acceleration responses were recorded at the top of the building. The field data presented in this paper were measured during the passage of a typhoon. The characteristics of the typhoon-generated wind and the structural responses of the building are investigated. Passive house standard buildings (PHSBs), characterized by exceptional airtightness, present a promising technology for attaining carbon neutrality by 2060. The level of building airtightness is closely associated with air infiltration, which significantly impacts building energy consumption. However, there has been insufficient analysis of air infiltration in highly airtight buildings across diverse climatic regions. The present study involves the numerical simulation of the air infiltration rate (AIR) in an airtight building under varying design conditions during winter and summer, followed by a comprehensive analysis of the corresponding energy demand associated with air infiltration. The simulation results indicate that the building's AIR ranges from 125 to 423 m3/h, with an average of 189 m3/h under summer design conditions, and from 40 to 344 m3/h, with an average of 198 m3/h under winter design conditions. The statistical findings demonstrate distinct distribution patterns for AIR and energy demand across various climatic regions, exhibiting significant variations in values. The discussion emphasizes the substantial heating load associated with air infiltration, even at a building airtightness level of 0.5 h−1, highlighting the necessity of considering its impact in the design of highly airtight buildings. Furthermore, it is recommended to establish specific airtightness limits for buildings in different climatic regions of China. A city is an area highly concentrated in buildings, but is also an important place for energy consumption and waste generation, so the development of buildings with low energy consumption and less pollutant emissions is an important way to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction, and sustainable development of cities in China. On the basis of systematically combing and broadly absorbing the relevant research results of sustainable development and urban greening, and combining with the mathematical methods such as variation coefficient and intuitionistic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, urban housing buildings are taken as the subject of evaluation. With sustainable development as the evaluation background, the aim of study is to systematically and comprehensively evaluate and analyze the building greening level. Based on the analysis of green building theory and predecessors' research results, the influence of economic, political, technical and other factors on the development of green building in nearly 300 cities in China is analysed. And combined with the actual development examples of Shenzhen City, it is further discussed. Reducing building energy use, a linchpin of climate change mitigation, is a daunting challenge across the world. Gaining increasing attention, retro-commissioning (RCx) is a systematic process that can improve building energy performance. Using a techno-legal lens to review statutes and guides on RCx, this study reveals that in China, a national standard on building commissioning has taken effect yet RCx statutes are hitherto not found. The United States has RCx statutes enacted over 14 states; scrutinizing the statutes of five cities unveils similarities and differences in their scope of control and compliance requirements. In the absence of a specific RCx statute, the guide of Hong Kong, China provides detailed guidance for energy saving practices. While these findings can serve as reference for other places planning to formulate laws or guidance on RCx, the need to further study the effectiveness of mandating RCx for reducing building energy use is highlighted. A conceptual analysis of cost variation with statutory control, which could help policymakers consider from an economic perspective whether or to what extent statutory RCx requirements should be imposed, is also illustrated. This not only contributes insights to the pursuit of an optimal balance between statutory control and voluntary action for energy reduction but also adds to the debate on building energy policies. The building energy performance improvement of large-scale public buildings is very important to release China's energy shortage pressure. The aim of the study is to find out the building energy saving potentials of large-scale public and commercial buildings by energy audit. In this paper, the energy consumption, energy performance, and audit were carried out for a typical commercial mall, the so-called largest mall in Asia, located in a hot-summer and warm-winter climate zone. The total annual energy consumption reaches 210.01 kWh/m, of which lighting energy consumption accounts for 30.03 kWh/m and the lift and elevator energy consumption accounts for 40.46 kWh/m. It is by far higher than that of the average building energy consumption in the same category. However, the annual heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) energy consumption is only 87.19 kWh/m even though they run 24/7. It proves that the energy performance of the HVAC system is good. Therefore, the building energy savings potential mainly relies on reducing the excessive usage of lighting, lifts, and elevators. As most promoted solution of climate change, green buildings become more popular and widely promoted in China recently. This paper compared the carbon emissions of green buildings with non-green buildings; therefore, a life cycle carbon emission assessment approach (LCA) was attempted. In the present paper, we have integrated existing database Building Environmental Load Evaluation System (BELES) developed by Tsinghua University and twenty-six real existing buildings (nine residential and seventeen commercial buildings). Buildings located in two major climate zones were selected, namely, zone II and III. Five phases were defined for a whole life cycle of building: Phase 1 Raw Materials, Phase 2 Transportation, Phase 3 Construction, Phase 4 Operation & Maintenance and Phase 5 Demolishment. In each phase, the emissions were calculated separately. It is found that whole life cycle CO 2 (LCCO 2 ) of green buildings are lower than that of non-green buildings, i.e., 10% for residential and 32% for commercial buildings, respectively. For both residential and commercial buildings, Operational & Maintenance phase contributes the majority of emissions in the whole life cycle, about 69.2–89.3%. Moreover, green buildings have slightly higher embodied CO 2 emissions than non-green buildings, but with much lower operational emissions, and this phenomenon is significant in residential buildings. This indicates that the LCCO 2 of green buildings start to match with LCCO 2 of non-green buildings after operating for certain years, which is the turning point. Furthermore, China implemented Standard for Energy Consumption of Buildings in December 2016, which listed two values for energy efficiency in operational phase, which represents requested and optional. It can be expected that the emissions in Operational & Maintenance phase of green buildings will be further reduced in the future. In recent years, with the continuous growth of China's power peak load and the rapid development of renewable energy, a large number of renewable energy sources are connected to the power grid, increasing the uncertainty of power grid operation and posing new major challenges to the power system regulation capacity. Flexible load has the characteristics of wide distribution, fast response, and high economy, which is an important control resource for the future power system. Based on the flexible load of commercial buildings and residential users, this paper studies the resource characteristics and response characteristics, clarifies the resource characteristics and demand response characteristic indexes of commercial and residential users, and establishes the response characteristics model of commercial buildings and residential users. Considering the influence of weather, holidays, incentive mechanism, and other factors on the response of flexible load, the quantitative analysis method of flexible load resource regulation potential for regional power grid dispatching was studied, and the feasibility of flexible load resources directly participating in the load control system was analyzed. Based on the uncertainty and mathematical characterization method of the active response of flexible loads, the optimal combination control strategy of demand response resources was proposed to eliminate the problems of heavy load and overload of regional power grid equipment by using the active response ability of flexible loads. Finally, the IEEE 14-node system is selected for simulation verification, which provides a theoretical basis for alleviating the power grid operation pressure in the peak load period of the power grid in the urban core area, improving the safety and economic operation level of regional power grid dispatching and the utilization rate of power grid equipment assets. With a new trend in China that the Public Rental Housing (PRH) becomes a main part of indemnificatory housing, as a new kind rental oriented indemnificatory housing, PRH presents new challenges for housing sustainability. This paper aims to solve the sustainable construction problem for PRH by adopting the Industrialized Building (IB). The research processed with an extensive literature review, and then the common barriers for the IB adoption in housing industry were investigated. Combine with the characteristics of PRH, the barriers and advantages for adopting IB in China indemnificatory housing was analyzed. Furthermore, the sustainability principles for China's PRH construction were discussed in three aspects, which are economics sustainability, environmental sustainability and social sustainability. The results shown that PRH is able to overcome most of common barriers of IB adoption in commercial buildings, such as high initial cost and lack of market demand. However, increased industrial scale, optimized supply chain and improved the make recognition are still key challenges for IB adoption in PRH project. With the continuous implementation of a plan for reconstruction of "Beautiful Countryside" in China, the rural environment and appearance of rural houses have been significantly improved. However, those houses in cold areas of China have great trouble with indoor temperature and heating-related energy consumption. After investigating the current situation of the layout, building envelope, indoor temperature, and energy consumption of the rural houses renovated by the plan of "Beautiful Countryside" in Shandong Province, this paper puts forward the improvement measures of raising indoor temperature and reducing energy consumption. On this basis, a typical rural house was selected, and DesignBuilder was utilized to simulate the effects before and after the application of different renovation measures for this house. The results show that the main way to raise indoor temperature and reduce energy consumption is to improve the thermal insulation performance of the building envelope, including renovation of the roof, exterior walls, doors and windows, and attached sunspace. In addition, combined with the achievements of "Beautiful Countryside" reconstruction, this paper shall propose specific renovation practices which are suitable for different rural houses. Based on the level of economic development in rural areas, it also puts forward some feasible renovation paths for different rural areas, and further provides references for other areas to carry out relevant work in the future. This paper explores the driving factors leading to emission changes and examines the prospective emission peaks in China and China's provinces by adopting generalized Divisia index method (GDIM) and the combination of scenario analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. Furthermore, the regional emission heterogeneity and the contribution of provinces to the change and peak of national emissions are discussed to identify regions and provinces that should be focused on emission monitoring. Results show that in China and most Chinese provinces, energy consumption of commercial buildings, energy consumption and floor space of urban residential buildings besides income improvement, and the per capita CO 2 emissions of rural residential buildings contributed greatly to emission growth. Under current policies, commercial and urban residential buildings in most provinces would fail to reach their emission peaks ahead of schedule. The urban residential buildings in the northern region, commercial and rural residential buildings in the eastern region caused higher CO 2 emissions. At the provincial level, Shandong, Shanxi and Hebei made the top contribution to total emissions of commercial, urban residential and rural residential buildings, respectively. Shandong and the provinces in north China of urban residential buildings and four provinces including Shandong, Guangdong, Hebei and Zhejiang of commercial and rural residential buildings had the significant impact on the uncertainty of the peaking time of CO 2 emissions. Construction is an important sector for climate action. The construction, operation and maintenance, demolition and disposal stages of house buildings consume many resources and have a significant impact on society, the economy and the environment. To assess such efforts, we propose the emergy footprint model of house buildings, which can quantitatively analyse the ecological effect in the house buildings life cycle. The research shows the following. China's ecological efficiency of the housing sector is characterized by improvement. In the house building fifty-year life cycle, the emergy footprint of the operation and maintenance stage is the largest (75.92%), followed by the construction stage (21.95%), but the emergy footprint intensity of the latter is 4.82 times that of the former. Reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in the operation and maintenance stage is the key to reducing the life cycle emergy footprint of house buildings. The ecological impact coefficient of house buildings is negatively exponentially correlated with their service life. It reaches ecological break-even when the service period of the house building is equal to 36.73 years. Abstract With the surging urbanization process and rapid economic growth in the service industry, carbon emissions released by the commercial building sector have become critical for China's national action towards meeting the "Post Paris" mitigation target. This paper is the first to confirm whether carbon intensity in the commercial building sector decouples from the economic development in service industry via the decomposition and decoupling methods at both the scales of the nation and the top five urban agglomerations [Jing-Jin-Ji (JJJ), Yangtze-River-Delta (YRD), Pearl-River-Delta (PRD), Yangtze-River-Middle-Reach (YRMR), and Cheng-Yu (CY) urban agglomerations] in China during the 2000–2015 period. The key findings indicate the following. The nationwide decoupling status was weak from 2001 to 2005 and then strong from 2006 to 2015. At the scale of urban agglomeration, only four states were observed in the decoupling status, and the order of the decoupling statuses across the different urban agglomerations is as follows: JJJ > CY > YRD > PRD > YRMR (2001–2005), YRD > JJJ > PRD > CY > YRMR (2006–2010), and YRD > YRMR > JJJ > CY > PRD (2011–2015). The carbon Kuznets curves of the commercial building sector successfully reveal the causes of the different decoupling paths across different urban agglomerations. The growing decoupling effects can be attributed to the rapid development of energy conservation projects in the commercial building sector over the past decade. Overall, it is expected that our contribution covers the research gap of decoupling carbon intensity in the commercial building sector from economic growth in the service industry, and our efforts constitute a significant contribution to the analysis of the carbon emission peak in the Chinese commercial building sector. In Hong Kong, over half of the Protestant churches are located in the upper-floor units in commercial and residential buildings. Because of their physical locations, these churches are sometimes dubbed ‘upper-floor churches’. Unlike those that occupy stand-alone religious buildings or dwell in church-run schools and social service centres, these are often invisible in the landscapes of the city. Through analysis of a case study, this paper aims to explore the spatial practices that a Protestant community has adopted in acquiring, representing, and ritualising a business unit in a residential high-rise for building up their church. Our analysis of the case study shows that in a metropolis like contemporary Hong Kong, the construction of sacred space is full of tensions between utilitarian calculations and concerns of human relations and religious values. While the congregation had been very creative in transforming a commercial unit into a religious site, it did not show much awareness of the oppressive powers of the capitalist market and had a strong tendency to represent its spatial practices as commodities for consumption. Abstract: This paper takes a close look at the China national standard GB50189-2005, Design Standard for Energy Efficiency of Public Buildings, which was enforced on July 1, 2005. The paper first reviews the standard, then compares the standard with ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2004 to identify discrepancies in code coverage and stringency, and recommends some energy conservation measures that can be evaluated in the design of public buildings to achieve energy savings beyond the standard. The paper also highlights several important features of 90.1-2004 that may be considered as additions to the GB50189-2005 standard during the next revision. This paper contributes to filling the knowledge gap on risks in the commercial real estate market in four Chinese cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chongqing. This paper presents a case study of the prediction, potential and control of plume in wet cooling towers from a huge commercial building in Hong Kong based on the weather data available for a particular year. The power input is found to be lower and the coefficient of performance (COP) moderate when all the 10 towers with low speed are in use, while it is found to be reverse when there are five towers, especially, three low and two high-speed towers are used. It is also found that the combined heating and cooling option can be a better approach than that of the heating option alone from the point of view of thermodynamics as well as from the point of view of economics. The COP of the chillers increases from 6.01 to 7.09 when the number of cooling towers increases from five to ten. On the other hand, the power consumption first decreases and then increases which is mainly due to the increment in the consumption of fan power from 270 to 900 kW for both options. The overall power consumption decreases slightly for the combined heating and cooling option, while in the heating option, the overall power consumption increases slightly. However, it is observed that a proper operation of cooling towers is an effective means to control and/or at least reduce the potential of visible plume generated by wet cooling towers at the existing chilling plant design for this particular building. The feasibility of using thermal performance lines to assess the efficiency of using energy in air-conditioned commercial buildings in Hong Kong is being explored. The paper describes a regression study aimed at identifying a suitable climatic variable that would yield linear thermal performance lines for commercial buildings in Hong Kong. The study was based on the monthly electricity consumption of 26 existing office/commercial buildings obtained from a recent survey. Candidate weather parameters considered include monthly mean outdoor temperature, outdoor air moisture content and global solar radiation, and their square and product terms. The regression analysis shows that the square of monthly mean outdoor temperature would be the most appropriate climatic variable. Explanations are also given as to why moisture content and global solar radiation were considered less appropriate, notwithstanding that in Hong Kong, the humidity is high for most of the time in the year and the cooling load due to solar heat gain is a significant component of the design cooling load of air-conditioned buildings. Achieving this target requires actions from all sectors, especially the building sector, which accounts for 33 % of the total energy consumption in China. Within this scenario, this paper introduces a new urban building energy modeling tool, Automated Building Performance Simulation (AutoBPS), to calculate urban building energy demands and to analyze energy retrofit and rooftop photovoltaic (PV) potential. AutoBPS uses a building-by-building approach to automatically generate multi-zone (one zone per floor) models based on the city building dataset, considering the shading effect by surrounding buildings. The tool simulates building energy use and PV generation via EnergyPlus. A downtown district of 3633 buildings in Changsha, China, was selected as a case study to demonstrate the features of the tool. Firstly, annual baseline energy uses of 1793 GWh were simulated by inputting Geographic Information System (GIS) data. Then, different energy conservation measures (covering envelope, lighting, cooling system upgrade, etc.) and roof PV generation systems were adopted to explore energy saving potential. The results showed that the window upgrade was the most energy-efficient individual measure for residential buildings, while the lighting upgrade was that one for commercial buildings. Altogether three measures could save 2.7 ∼ 30.7 % of annual site energy use intensity per building. The total energy demand could be reduced by 18.5 % by combining all measures and saved by 38.6 % when PV installation was added. Zero-energy buildings have attracted interest worldwide as they consume less energy and can alleviate energy shortages caused by rapid economic development. This paper presents a review of the research and development regarding zero-energy buildings in China. First, it briefly introduces the evolution of the definition of zero-energy buildings and discusses the key influencing factors of such buildings in China. Then, envelope design, selection of mechanical and electrical equipment, and solar energy utilization aspects of zero-energy buildings are examined. Additionally, this paper discusses the development and application of zero-energy buildings in China, including project types, design methods, energy resources allocation, and energy operation management. Finally, this paper analyzes China's policies for zero-energy buildings, including incentive mechanisms, laws and regulations, and problems encountered, and provides suggestions for promoting zero-energy buildings in China. Commercial buildings, especially large irregular commercial buildings with complex space and dense occupation, have high energy consumption and carbon emissions. Moreover, the actual operating performance differs significantly from its design, in terms of energy conservation and carbon emissions. This study selected an irregular large-scale green commercial building in Dalian, a coastal city in the cold zone of China. The running energy consumption and indoor physical environment were investigated and analyzed, and a satisfaction survey was conducted using the Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) methods. The promotion strategies of holistic design were proposed by comparing the operational building performance with the design target. The research shows that the energy consumption of the building was 68.02 kWh/m2, which failed to meet the standard requirements. The carbon emission was 74.76 kgCO 2 /m2. Less than 10 % of humidity in summer fell in the expected range, and the lowest value of PM 2.5 concentration in winter was 28.3 %. The score of indoor environmental quality and service satisfaction was low. This paper identifies the problems and analyzes the differences between the operation stage and design phase. Under the impact of COVID-19 and the needs for urban expansion, a large number of outpatient buildings have been rapidly constructed, but the problem of high energy consumption has always been ignored. There is a lack of research on the adaptability of building shape in different climate zones. Many studies have shown that a reasonable shape in the early stage of design can significantly reduce the energy consumption of buildings. Therefore, it helps if architects quickly select a reasonable shape that can effectively reduce energy consumption. This study summarized a number of outpatient building cases in China and proposed three typical building shapes: centralized-type (Shape-1), corridor-type (Shape-2), and courtyard-type (Shape-3). The Design Builder tool was used to simulate and analyze the typical building energy consumption in different climate zones. The simulation results show that Shape-2 (angle: 0°) should be chosen in severe cold zone; Shape-1 (angle: 90°) should be chosen in cold zone; Shape-1 (angle: 0°) should be chosen in hot summer and cold winter zone; Shape-1 (angle: 60°) should be chosen in hot summer and warm winter zone; and Shape-1 or Shape-2 can be chosen in warm zone. In recent years, in the process of promoting prefabricated buildings, problems such as waste of resources and energy have been present, which have seriously hindered the realization of carbon emission reduction benefits of prefabricated buildings. Especially during the materialization stage of prefabricated buildings which involves the most engineering activities and the most extensive sources of carbon emissions, it is urgent to further meet the low-carbon development of the construction industry. This study takes the 4 substages of design and development, component production, transportation, and installation during the materialization stage as the point of penetration and identifies the carbon reduction impact pathways based on the 3E (Environment-Economy-Energy) system theory in 5 dimensions: government policy, management mode, technology level, economy input, and energy structure. The data are collected through the questionnaire survey, and structural equation modeling (SEM) is utilized to examine the hypothesis and impact dimensions of the study. The results confirm that the management mode has the strongest effects on carbon emission reduction, followed by government policy, economy input, and technology level, and the energy structure has the weakest effects. Using energy conservation measures (ECMs) for building retrofit can significantly reduce building operational carbon emissions (BOCEs) and contribute to Chinese carbon neutrality by 2060. This paper involves 11 feasible ECMs for commercial buildings in hot-summer and cold-winter zone, China, and proposes a quick assessment approach to BOCEs reduction. Prototypical models are simulated for ECMs using EnergyPlus and the emission intensity is corrected by the building shape factor and window-to-wall ratio. Based on pre-simulated results, effects on reducing emissions of individual measures and packages of them are studied to develop regression models in SPSS. The results show that decreasing the U-factor of external walls, lighting power density (LPD), or shading coefficient can reduce BOCEs linearly. BOCEs are most sensitive to LPD and using daylighting control can reduce emissions by 5–15%. In addition, increasing the boilers' efficiency reduces emissions linearly, while performance improvement of chillers or heat pumps reduces emissions logarithmically. Furthermore, utilizing variable speed pumps, heat recovery ventilation, and air-side economizers can reduce emissions by 3.8%, 6.6%, and 15.2%, respectively. Finally, significant interactions exist among measures of enhancing glazing U-factor, adding external shading, using energy-saving lamps, and improving cooling/heating system efficiencies. The developed regression models are validated in a retrofit case in Shanghai. Through assessment, the case can reduce BOCEs by 15.9 kgCO 2 /m2, with a reduction rate of 20.8%. Compared with recorded data, the relative error of assessing emission reduction is −13.0% and that of assessing reduction rate is 0.5%, which are acceptable in the decision-making stage of retrofit strategies. The use of natural ventilation in buildings to reduce the energy consumption and CO 2 emission has been widely investigated and practiced, but few existing studies have considered the exploration and assessment of natural ventilation in different location patterns of rural residential buildings in the mountainous terrain of China. In this paper, the representative rural residential buildings are firstly selected in Huarong, Pingjiang and Liuyang regions of northern Hunan Province to carry out on-site survey works to determine building types, physical parameters and layout forms. Then, the wind tunnel experiments are carried out to investigate the effectiveness of natural ventilation under different location patterns, and the monitored results are compared with simulated data. The results show that the experiments and simulations are in satisfactory agreement. The experimental data also indicate that when the modelled distance of 120 mm (i.e. 12 m between the building and hilly terrain in practical application) is the best option for building natural ventilation. Based on the investigation and statistical data, the natural ventilation effectiveness under different location patterns and operational conditions is simulated using CFD methods, and it is obtained the most favourable location pattern for natural ventilation. The results show that the winter ventilation of buildings in the existing location pattern is significantly obstructed in the hilly terrain, which is favourable to the indoor thermal environment, however, the natural ventilation is compromised to a certain extent in summer. Furthermore, the findings also show that, regardless of the hilly terrain's height at 50 m or 150 m, the buildings are able to avoid natural ventilation in winter to the maximum extent when the distance between the buildings and the frontier of the hilly terrain is double that of the building height (i.e. 12 m). A large part of energy consumption in homes, offices and commercial spaces is related to Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (HVAC) devices. The effective parameter on the consumption of HVAC systems is internal heat gains that arise from occupants, electric equipment and lighting. In order to reduce the energy consumption of these systems, internal heat gains should be predicted accurately. Since there are few investigations performed on the prediction of internal heat gains, in this paper, three predictive models, namely multiple regression model, Levenberg–Marquardt back-propagation (LM-BP) model and similar days method based on combined weights, have been deployed. By assessing the influential factors on internal heat gains, fundamental theories, structures, equations and parameters of these models are thoroughly proposed. To examine the prediction techniques, an office building in China was considered. It was found that all the proposed models have high accuracy; however, the LM-BP neural network showed the most precision among other models with RMSE = 15.59, MAE = 10.16 and MAPE = 6.35. This model had a higher agreement with the actual internal heat gains compared to the predetermined working programs in the ASHRAE standard 90.1. The proposed models used in this study can lead to providing a theoretical base for scholars and engineers to improve the predictive control of HVAC systems, which plays an important role in enhancing thermal comfort, saving energy of residential buildings. Abstract: Energy consumption keeps increasing in China's building sector with the constant growth of urban population and people's living standard. In order to achieve co-benefits of reducing energy use, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy costs effectively, all respects related to the energy performance in the building sector need to be addressed. Considering the fact that over 80% of total energy use in a building's lifecycle is contributed by the operation stage, the study's focus is put on this stage for well understanding the energy consumption and carbon emissions and exploring the approach to achieve the effectiveness of co-benefits. The energy use in large commercial buildings is 4–6 times higher than residential buildings in China, thus IKEA Xuhui Store as one of large shopping malls in Shanghai is selected as the case study by using the method formed in the study. The outcomes of research show that the benefit of annual 170 MWh of energy use and 150 tons of CO2e reduction as well as the significant economic benefit have been achieved by implementing different measures in IKEA Xuhui Store between 2008 and 2011. Existing investment, technology and capacity barriers to co-benefits approach in a wider consideration of China's building sector are described. The assessment for evaluating co-benefits of cutting energy use and CO2 emissions in the production and demolition stages in a building's lifecycle are also addressed by the paper. In this case study, calculations and analyses were performed mainly for a solar-ground source heat pump system using a newly built office–factory building. Calculations for the collector panels, the water heater system and the saving for natural lighting system were also performed. Results have shown that the energy consumption in ground source system is 34.1% more efficient than that of air source system in normal days in winter. The required data for the calculations were measured using calorimeters and electricity meters which form part of the building automation system (BAS). Based on the field measurement and wind tunnel test for wind pressure on the surface of a super-tall building on the coast of Xiamen city, this paper discussed the wind pressure characteristics and its distribution on super-tall building during the passage of typhoon Megi. The results clearly demonstrate that the wind pressure characteristics ( mean wind pressure coefficient and extreme wind pressure coefficient) and its distribution on super-tall building revealed by wind tunnel test are roughly agree with the field measurement. The mean wind pressure coefficient results of field measurement fit with wind tunnel test very well on the windward side, while the value of field measurement is smaller than wind tunnel test on the leeward side obviously. Abstract: Operation mode of combined cooling heating and power (CCHP) system determines its energetic and environmental performances. This paper analyzes the energy flows of CCHP system and separated production (SP) system. The fuel energy consumptions of CCHP system following electrical demand management (EDM) and thermal demand management (TDM) are deduced respectively. Three indicators: primary energy saving, exergy efficiency and CO2 emission reduction, are employed to evaluate the performances of CCHP system for a commercial building in Beijing, China. The feasibility analysis shows that the performance of CCHP system is strictly dependent upon building energy demands. The selection of CCHP operation modes is systemically based on building loads, CCHP system and local SP system. The calculation results conclude that CCHP system in winter under EDM achieves more benefits than in summer. The sensitivity discussion indicates that the coefficient of performance for cooling and the efficiency of electricity generation are the most sensitive variables to the energetic and environmental performances of CCHP system. Abstract: Energy consumption is an important issue in China. In heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, more and more commercial buildings use air-to-air heat recovery ventilators as energy saving units for recovering heat from the exhaust air in ventilation systems in current years. In the present paper, critical temperatures of air-to-air heat recovery systems for supermarkets in winter are recommended and discussed for the four cities in different climate zones of China. The analysis shows that the temperature of fresh air in winter can be categorized into three regions, i.e., recovery region, transition region and impermissible recovery region. The results also indicate that the latent heat recovery is not suitable for ventilation energy savings in supermarkets in winter. Meanwhile, the applicability of sensible heat recovery in supermarkets depends on outdoor climate and fresh air flow rate. If a variable rotational speed fan is used to introduce fresh air into the building, heat recovery does always function as planned in winter for all the selected cities except Guangzhou, and most values of the COP are much higher than 2.5. Abstract: The need to energy conservation and sustainable development in buildings is causing a new interest towards passive solar systems. Among them, double-skin facade (DSF) proves to be extremely attractive and promising. DSF is building envelope formed by two layers of different glazing facades which are separated by a ventilated air cavity. The cavity of DSF is used to collect or evacuate the solar radiation absorbed by the facades, thereby improving the thermal comfort and the indoor air quality while conserving energy for heating and cooling. Being a technique developed for colder climates, DSF has been widely applied in commercial buildings across Europe. Nowadays buildings with DSF also appear in the hot-summer and cold-winter zone in China where the weather conditions in summer seem to be not so good for the application. In fact, the thermal analysis of the DSF system is essential to its application in such hot-summer zone. This paper seeks to describe the existing main research methods on the thermal performance of DSF and the shading devices. Problems and possibilities are concomitant. Applying ventilated DSF with controlled shading device system would be a new efficient way for the commercial buildings in the hot-summer and cold-winter zone to meet the task of sustainable building design in China. Abstract: This paper reports the evaluations of energy efficiency, plume potential as well as plume control of a huge chiller plant using water-evaporative cooling towers for heat rejection for a super high-rising commercial office building in a subtropical region of Hong Kong. The evaluations were carried out in a dynamic Transient Simulation Program (TRNSYS)-based simulation platform using alternative control strategies including set-point control logics of the supply cooling water temperature and cooling tower fan modulation control methods as well as different number control means of cooling towers. The results show that different control strategies have significant effects on the energy efficiency of the chiller plant. The quantification of the energy efficiency demonstrates significant energy-saving potential by using advanced technologies for implementing optimal control strategies in this cooling system. The results also reveal that the plume may occur frequently in spring and summer seasons and occasionally in other months due to the odd subtropical weather conditions. Control strategies also have significant effects on the frequency of the plume occurrence. The effective energy efficiency control and effective plume control using wet–dry (i.e., hybrid) cooling towers are also discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

China is committed to peaking its carbon emissions by 2030 and become a carbon-neutral society by 2060. The building sector that accounts for over one-third of the total carbon emissions is expected to face a great challenge in helping China achieve this goal. Shenzhen, as a low-carbon pilot city, whether its low-carbon work of urban buildings reaches the target is crucial. An attempt has been made in this study to assess the intensity of carbon emissions and associated reduction efficiency of urban buildings (operation stage) in Shenzhen by using the life cycle assessment method. The results show that the total carbon emissions generated from the buildings' operation stage have increased from 22 million metric tons (Mt) CO 2 eq in 2005 to 42 (±13%) Mt. CO 2 eq in 2019. Carbon emissions mainly result from the buildings' electricity use (79%), followed by refrigerant release emissions (12%). The energy conservation and carbon emissions reduction intensity in Shenzhen is at the middle level in China, and there is considerable space for improvement. According to scenario-based analysis, the carbon emission of the buildings sector can probably reach its peak by 2025 with the implementation of suitable policies – 5 years earlier than national target by 2030. Overall, this study makes a systemic analysis of the characteristics of urban buildings energy consumption and carbon emissions reduction, which can provide supportings for justifying the effectiveness of low-carbon activities in Shenzhen and beyond. • This paper evaluated the emissions reduction of civil buildings in Shenzhen city. • LCA method is employed to quantify the efficiency of emissions reduction. • Public buildings consume more energy per unit area than residential buildings. • Electricity use is the focus of buildings emission, accounting for 79% of the total. • Current efforts cannot meet the ambitious carbon peak and neutrality target. Purpose - The recession in the late 1990s in Hong Kong has triggered many commercial building owners to cut operation and maintenance (O&M) cost via outsourcing. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dominant expenditure on O&M service and examine the relation between extent of outsourcing and rental income of the buildings. Design/methodology/approach - Experienced O&M practitioners were interviewed to collect both quantitative and qualitative data of the commercial buildings they looked after. The in-house and outsourced O&M costs, air-conditioning energy costs, rental incomes, and management and air-conditioning fees for the buildings were analysed. Findings - The total air-conditioning O&M cost is the principal cost item, with the energy cost being the dominant element. The analysis reveals that the extent of outsourcing bore little correlation with the air-conditioning O&M cost and the rental income. Research limitations/implications - Further work may take a similar approach to identify the extent and effect of outsourcing other kinds of services that underpin the core business of an organisation. Practical implications - Varying the extent of outsourcing O&M service was found to be unpromising for enhancing rental performance or cutting O&M expenditure. This is an important point that the building managers should address when considering whether to go for outsourcing. Originality/value - The findings imply that in the building O&M service industry, it would be more economical to outsource or undertake in-house the vast majority of O&M work. Purpose - To explain the recent emergence of the trend of outsourcing for building services operation and maintenance (O&M) work for commercial buildings in Hong Kong and to predict its future development. Design/methodology/approach - Based on economic theories, the authors' understanding of buildings and building services O&M in Hong Kong and information regarding property, companies and manpower statistics, the increasing use of outsourcing is explained with a prediction of its implications for industry stakeholders and future trends. Findings - Reports the common operation and maintenance organization for small, medium and large commercial buildings and explains the relation between outsourcing and the recent economic downturn and sharp cuts in O&M expenditure. Analyses the factors influencing O&M costs and predicts that the trend of outsourcing will continue if contractors keep on upgrading their knowledge and skills to provide quality services more economically than the in-house workforce. Research limitations/implications - The explanation and prediction rely greatly on economic theories and the authors' knowledge and observations from industry, yet the reason for outsourcing and the factors influencing O&M costs are unveiled. Practical implications - The findings have exposed implications for building owners and O&M practitioners as a result of the outsourcing trend, on top of establishing a rigid framework for future practical research in the area. Originality/value - This paper explains the prime motive for outsourcing building services O&M work for commercial buildings, predicts future trends and reveals the implications for stakeholders in the O&M industry in Hong Kong.
