Introduction: Interactions of different hemoglobin variants with thalassemia alleles can result in various clinical phenotypes. HbE-beta-thalassemia generally manifests with severe anemia where individuals exhibit beta-thalassemia major with regular blood transfusions or beta-thalassemia intermedia with periodic blood transfusions. This study presents a unique Malay family with three beta-globin gene defects-HbE, Hb South Florida, and IVS1-1 (G-->A).Materials and Methods: HbE activates a cryptic splice site that produces non-functional mRNAs. Hb South Florida is a rare beta-hemoglobin variant, and its interactions with other beta-thalassemia alleles have not been reported. IVS1-1 is a Mediterranean mutation that affects mRNA processing giving rise to beta(o)-thalassemia.Results and Discussion: Fifteen mutations along the beta-globin gene complex were analyzed using the amplification refractory mutation system. Hb South Florida was identified by direct sequencing using genomic DNA.Conclusion: The affected child with HbE/IVS1-1 produced a beta-thalassemia major phenotype. Compound heterozygosity for Hb South Florida/IVS1-1 produced a beta-thalassemia carrier phenotype in the mother. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An urban subway network system is a complex public transportation system. To compare rail transit braking digital command control strategies based on neural network, this article analyzes and studies the characteristics of subway vehicle driver controllers and their design methods from three aspects: mechanical, electrical and software-assisted design. The learning rule of the BP neural network is called the mentor system learning rule, which is a kind of error-correcting algorithm. In the learning and training process, the expected output value needs to be given. The weights and thresholds of the BP neural network are optimized by selecting the parameters of the SA algorithm. The search method of SA is heuristic, and it has the following advantages: The selection of the initial solution does not affect the optimal solution. The simplified model extracts the core data processing individual analysis. In this paper, the physical data are extracted from the physical entity operation process for analysis, and the twin model is established to extract the twin data for analysis. This paper uses the characteristics of physical data to test the modeling effect and utilizes the twin data to carry out algorithm experiments on physical data. The ultimate goal is to use twin data to predict the state information of physical entities. The network error in the scheme designed by the article is 6%. The smooth implementation of this research constitutes an important reference for the design of subway train network control systems in other cities in China. Background: Otitis externa is a commonly diagnosed dermatological disorder in canines. The pathogens primarily involved in canine otitis externa (COE) include Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, and Malassezia pachydermatis. As COE tends to be superficial, medications delivered topically are often effective and practical in managing the condition. As such, there is a wide variety of approved topical products currently available in the market. The efficacy of topical dosage forms can be dependent on various factors such as the pharmacology of active constituents and the physicochemical properties of the formulation, including pH, viscosity, spreadability, and bio-adhesion. Currently, there is a lack of published literature available on the optimal properties of topical COE products. In this study, we compared the physicochemical properties of nine commercially available otic veterinarian products in Australia used clinically to manage COE. Results: Based on our comparative analysis, the pH (6.26 ± 0.04) of an aqueous-based product was similar to a healthy dog's external auditory canal. Products containing polymers exhibited higher viscosity and bio-adhesion. Spreadability was inversely related to viscosity and Osurnia ® a product with high viscosity demonstrated the lowest spreadability. Aqueous-based otic products showed better syringebility whereas oil-based systems required higher force to expel the products. Variability in droplet size was noted. Derm Otic, Baytril Otic, and Aurizon Ear Drops had the lower standard deviation which indicates they would give a more consistent dose. Conclusions: Findings from this work provide considerations for industry researchers or formulation scientists working in the area of otic dosage formulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study evaluates the role of hypothyroidism in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by comparing the OSA indices in hypothyroid OSA (OSA-HYPOT) with euthyroid OSA (OSA-EUTHY) patients.Methods: After literature search in several electronic databases and selection of studies by following eligibility criteria, meta-analyses of mean differences/standardized mean differences were performed to compare OSA indices at the time of diagnosis between OSA-HYPOT and OSA-EUTHY patients. Metaregression analyses were carried out to examine the relationship between age, BMI, sample size, and gender vs OSA indices in OSA-HYPOT patients.Results: Twelve studies and five case reports recruiting 192 OSA-HYPOT and 1423 OSA-EUTHY patients were included in the meta-analysis. Prevalence (mean ± SD) of clinical hypothyroidism in OSA patients was 8.12 ± 7.13% and that of subclinical hypothyroidism 11.07 ± 8.49%. Apnea-Hypopnea Index, time of sleep with oxygen desaturation <90%, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale were significantly higher in the OSA-HYPOT patients at diagnosis, whereas there was no significant difference in arousal index, respiratory disturbance index and sleeping efficiency between OSA-HYPOT and OSA-EUTHY patients. Body mass index was positively associated with Apnea-Hypopnea Index in OSA-HYPOT patients.Conclusions: Hypothyroidism is found to be associated with severity of OSA. Abstract: Numerical models predicting anisotropic heat transfer of multi-scale wires using the transient electrothermal (TET) technique were successfully developed. Compared to previous models, the developed models are more realistic and accurate by taking into account the anisotropic thermal conduction in both axial and radial directions and the radiation heat loss from the wire surface to the measurement ambient. In the TET technique, the to-be-measured wire is placed between two electrodes. By feeding a step DC to the wire, its temperature increases and eventually reaches the steady state. The temperature evolution is probed by measuring the variation of voltage/resistance over the wire, which is then used to determine the axial and radial thermal diffusivities of the wire. For the first time, the developed models are solved using implicit finite difference method, giving more accurate predictions than the previous models using Green's function. The obtained results are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Using the validated models, the effects of various wire morphologies (radius of 10–200 μm, length of 5–20 mm), and experimental conditions (DC supply of 5–50 mA and ambient temperature of 0–25 °C) on the thermal characterization of the wires were also quantified. Our results are beneficial to experimentalists on optimization of measurement conditions of the experiments characterizing the thermal properties of multi-scale wires such as carbon-based microfibers.
