We study melting in a two-dimensional system of classical particles with Gaussian-core interactions in disordered environments. The pure system validates the conventional two-step melting with a hexatic phase intervening between the solid and the liquid. This picture is modified in the presence of pinning impurities. A random distribution of pinning centers forces a hexatic-like low temperature phase that transits into a liquid at a single melting temperature $T^{\rm RP}_{\rm m}$. In contrast, pinning centers located at randomly chosen sites of a perfect crystal anchors a solid at low temperatures which undergoes a direct transition to the liquid at $T^{\rm CP}_{\rm m}$. Despite the enormous theoretical and application interests, a fundamental understanding of the glassy dynamics remains elusive. The static properties of glassy and ordinary liquids are similar, but their dynamics are dramatically different. What leads to this difference is the central puzzle of the field. Even the primary defining glassy characteristics, their implications, and if they are related to a single mechanism remain unclear. This lack of clarity is a severe hindrance to theoretical progress. Here, we combine analytical arguments and simulations of various systems in different dimensions and address these questions. Our results suggest that the myriad of glassy features are manifestations of two distinct mechanisms. Particle caging controls the mean, and coexisting slow- and fast-moving regions govern the distribution of particle displacements. All the other glassy characteristics are manifestations of these two mechanisms; thus, the Fickian yet non-Gaussian nature of glassy liquids is not surprising. Our results have crucial implications on how the glassy dynamics data are analyzed, challenge some recent suggestions on the mechanisms governing gassy dynamics, and impose strict constraints that a correct theory of glasses must have.

We report the formation of a pinned vortex liquid spanning a very large region of the magnetic field-temperature parameter space in a 5 nm thick amorphous superconducting Re_xZr (x~6) (a-ReZr) thin film, using a combination of low-temperature scanning tunnelling spectroscopic (STS) imaging and magnetotransport measurements. The nature of the vortex liquid differs significantly from a regular liquid. Analysing series of STS images captured as a function of time, we observe that the interplay of pinning and intervortex interactions produces a very inhomogeneous state, where some vortices remain static, whereas others move forming a percolating network along which vortices are mobile. With increase in temperature or magnetic field this network becomes denser eventually encompassing all vortices. In equilibrium hard-rod fluids, and in effective hard-rod descriptions of anisotropic soft-particle systems, the transition from the isotropic (I) phase to the nematic phase (N) is observed above the rod aspect ratio L/D = 3.70 as predicted by Onsager. We examine the fate of this criterion in a molecular dynamics study of a system of soft repulsive spherocylinders rendered active by coupling half the particles to a heat bath at a higher temperature than that imposed on the other half. We show that the system phase separates and self-organizes into various liquid-crystalline phases that are not observed in equilibrium for the respective aspect ratios. Recently, some of us developed a novel model glass-forming liquid with k extra interactions with pseudo neighbours to each liquid particle over and above the regular interactions with its neighbours. Analysis of the structure and dynamics of these systems showed that with an increase in k the systems have more mean-field like properties. This work presents an extensive study of the thermodynamics of the above-mentioned model for several values of k and its correlation with the dynamics. We surprisingly find that the usual thermodynamic integration (TI) method of calculating the entropy provides unphysical results for this model. It predicts the vanishing of configurational entropy at state points at which both the collective and the single-particle dynamics of the system show complete relaxation. We then employ a new method known as the two-phase thermodynamics (2PT) method to calculate the entropy. We find that with an increase in k the difference in the entropy computed using the two methods (2PT and TI) increases. We also find that in the temperature range studied, the entropy calculated via the 2PT method satisfies the Adam-Gibbs (AG) relationship between the relaxation time and the configurational entropy, whereas the entropy calculated via the TI method shows a strong violation of the same. We then apply the 2PT method to calculate the entropy in another system where some fractions of particles are pinned randomly in their equilibrium positions. This system also shows a similar breakdown of the AG relationship as reported earlier. We show that the difference in entropy calculated via the 2PT and TI methods increases with an increase in pinning density. We report phase separation and liquid-crystal ordering induced by scalar activity in a system of Soft Repulsive Spherocylinders (SRS) of aspect ratio $L/D = 5 $. Activity was introduced by increasing the temperature of half of the SRS (labeled \textit{`hot'}) while maintaining the temperature of the other half constant at a lower value (labeled \textit{`cold'}). The difference between the two temperatures scaled by the lower temperature provides a measure of the activity. Starting from different equilibrium initial phases, we find that activity leads to segregation of the hot and cold particles. Activity also drives the cold particles through a phase transition to a more ordered state and the hot particles to a state of less order compared to the initial equilibrium state. The cold components of a homogeneous isotropic (I) structure acquire nematic (N) and, at higher activity, crystalline (K) order. Similarly, the cold zone of a nematic initial state undergoes smectic (Sm) and crystal ordering above a critical value of activity while the hot component turns isotropic. We find that the hot particles occupy a larger volume and exert an extra kinetic pressure, confining, compressing and provoking an ordering transition of the cold-particle domains., Comment: 19 pages, 21 figures

We study the single-file dynamics of three classes of active particles: run-and-tumble particles, active Brownian particles and active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles. At high activity values, the particles, interacting via purely repulsive and short-ranged forces, aggregate into several motile and dynamical clusters of comparable size, and do not display bulk phase-segregation. In this dynamical steady-state, we find that the cluster size distribution of these aggregates is a scaled function of the density and activity parameters across the three models of active particles with the same scaling function. The velocity distribution of these motile clusters is non-Gaussian. We show that the effective dynamics of these clusters can explain the observed emergent scaling of the mean-squared displacement of tagged particles for all the three models with identical scaling exponents and functions. Concomitant with the clustering seen at high activities, we observe that the static density correlation function displays rich structures, including multiple peaks that are reminiscent of particle clustering induced by effective attractive interactions, while the dynamical variant shows non-diffusive scaling. Dynamic heterogeneity, believed to be one of the hallmarks of the dynamics of supercooled liquids, is expected to affect the diffusion of the particles comprising the liquid. We have carried out extensive molecular dynamics simulations of two model glass-forming liquids in three dimensions to study the time scales at which Fick's law of diffusion starts to set in. We have identified two different Fickian timescales: one at which the mean squared displacement begins to show a linear dependence on time, and another one at which the distribution of particle displacements becomes Gaussian. These two times scales are found to be very different from each other and from the $\alpha$ relaxation time in both systems. An interesting connection is found between one of these Fickian time scales and the time scale obtained from the bond-breakage correlation function. We discuss the relationships between these different timescales and their connection to dynamic heterogeneity in the system.

We study various properties of the vibrational normal modes for Coulomb-interacting particles in two-dimensional irregular confinement using numerical simulations. By analyzing the participation ratio and spectral statistics, we characterize the vibrational modes for Coulomb clusters as localized, quasi-localized and delocalized. We also study a novel correlation function to understand the spatial structure of these different kinds of modes and subsequently extract the associated characteristic length scales. We further demonstrate that, at any given temperature, particles exhibiting larger displacement over a time interval comparable to the structural relaxation time, are strongly correlated with the low-frequency quasi-localized modes of the inherent structure corresponding to the initial configuration. Establishing this correlation for Coulomb clusters paves the path to identify the particular feature of the initial configuration that determines the previously observed heterogeneous dynamics of the particles at low temperatures in these systems., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

We present {\it block analysis}, an efficient method to perform finite-size scaling for obtaining the length scale of dynamic heterogeneity and the point-to-set length scale for generic glass-forming liquids. This method involves considering blocks of varying sizes embedded in a system of a fixed (large) size. The length scale associated with dynamic heterogeneity is obtained from a finite-size scaling analysis of the dependence of the four-point dynamic susceptibility on the block size. The block size dependence of the variance of the $\alpha$-relaxation time yields the static point-to-set length scale. The values of the obtained length scales agree quantitatively with those obtained from other conventional methods. This method provides an efficient experimental tool for studying the growth of length scales in systems such as colloidal glasses for which performing finite-size scaling by carrying out experiments for varying system sizes may not be feasible., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The origins of rapid dynamical slow down in glass forming liquids in the growth of static length scales, possibly associated with identifiable structural ordering, is a much debated issue. Growth of medium range crystalline order (MRCO) has been observed in various model systems to be associated with glassy behaviour. Such observations raise the question about the eventual state reached by a glass former, if allowed to relax for sufficiently long times. Is a slowly growing crystalline order responsible for slow dynamics? Are the molecular mechanisms for glass transition in liquids with and without MRCO the same? If yes, glass formers with MRCO provide a paradigm for understanding glassy behaviour generically. If not, systems with MRCO form a new class of glass forming materials whose molecular mechanism for slow dynamics may be easier to understand in terms of growing crystalline order, and should be approached in that manner, even while they will not provide generic insights. In this study we perform extensive molecular dynamics simulations of a number of glass forming liquids in two dimensions and show that the static and dynamic properties of glasses with MRCO are different from other glass forming liquids with no predominant local order. We also resolve an important issue regarding the so-called Point-to-set method for determining static length scales, and demonstrate it to be a robust, order agnostic, method for determining static correlation lengths in glass formers.

The dynamics of a dense binary mixture of soft dumbbells, each subject to an active propulsion force and thermal fluctuations, shows a sudden arrest, first to a translational then to a rotational glass, as one reduces temperature $T$ or the self-propulsion force $f$. Is the temperature-induced glass different from the activity-induced glass? To address this question, we monitor the dynamics along an iso-relaxation-time contour in the $(T-f)$ plane. We find dramatic differences both in the fragility and in the nature of dynamical heterogeneity which characterise the onset of glass formation - the activity-induced glass exhibits large swirls or vortices, whose scale is set by activity, and appears to diverge as one approaches the glass transition. This large collective swirling movement should have implications for collective cell migration in epithelial layers., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

Thermal conductivity of a model glass-forming system in the liquid and glass states is studied using extensive numerical simulations. We show that near the glass transition temperture, where the structural relaxation time becomes very long, the measured thermal conductivity decreases with increasing age. Secondly the thermal conductivity of the disordered solid obtained at low temperatures depends on the cooling rate with which it was prepared, with lower cooling rates leading to lower thermal conductivity. Our analysis links this decrease of the thermal conductivity with increased exploration of lower-energy inherent structures of the underlying potential energy landscape. Further we show that the lowering of conductivity for lower-energy inherent structures is related to the high frequency harmonic modes associated with the inherent structure being less extended., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures

Extensive computer simulations are performed for a few model glass-forming liquids in both two and three dimensions to study their dynamics when a randomly chosen fraction of particles are frozen in their equilibrium positions. For all the studied systems, we find that the temperature-dependence of the $\alpha$ relaxation time extracted from an overlap function related to the self part of the density autocorrelation function can be explained within the framework of the Random First Order Transition (RFOT) theory of the glass transition. We propose a scaling description to rationalize the simulation results and show that our data for the $\alpha$ relaxation time for all temperatures and pin concentrations are consistent with this description. We find that the fragility parameter obtained from fits of the temperature dependence of the $\alpha$ relaxation time to the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) form decreases by almost an order of magnitude as the pin concentration is increased from zero. Our scaling description relates the fragility parameter to the static length scale of RFOT and thus provides a physical understanding of fragility within the framework of the RFOT theory. When a binary liquid is confined by a strongly repulsive wall, the local density is depleted near the wall and an interface similar to that between the liquid and its vapor is formed. This analogy suggests that the composition of the binary liquid near this interface should exhibit spatial modulation similar to that near a liquid-vapor interface even if the interactions of the wall with the two components of the liquid are the same. The Guggenheim adsorption relation quantifies the concentrations of two components of a binary mixture near a liquid-vapor interface and qualitatively states that the majority (minority) component enriches the interface for negative (positive) mixing energy if the surface tensions of the two components are not very different. From molecular dynamics simulations of binary mixtures with different compositions and interactions, we find that the Guggenheim relation is qualitatively satisfied at wall-induced interfaces for systems with negative mixing energy at all state points considered. For systems with positive mixing energy, this relation is found to be qualitatively valid at low densities, while it is violated at state points with high density where correlations in the liquid are strong. This observation is validated by a calculation of the density profiles of the two components of the mixture using density functional theory with the Ramakrishnan-Yussouff free-energy functional. Ozawa et. al [1] presented numerical results for the configurational entropy density, $s_c$, of a model glass-forming liquid in the presence of random pinning. The location of a "phase boundary" in the pin density ($c$) - temperature ($T$) plane, that separates an "ideal glass" phase from the supercooled liquid phase, is obtained by finding the points at which $s_c(T,c) \to 0$. According to the theoretical arguments by Cammarota et. al. [2], an ideal glass transition at which the $\alpha$-relaxation time $\tau_\alpha$ diverges takes place when $s_c$ goes to zero. We have studied the dynamics of the same system using molecular dynamics simulations. We have calculated the time-dependence of the self intermediate scattering function, $F_s(k,t)$ at three state points in the $(c-T)$ plane where $s_c(T,c) \simeq 0$ according to Ref. [1]. It is clear from the plots that the relaxation time is finite [$\tau_\alpha \sim \mathcal{O}(10^6)]$ at these state points. Similar conclusions have been obtained in Ref.[3] where an overlap function was used to calculate $\tau_\alpha$ at these state points.

Temporal relaxation of density fluctuations in supercooled liquids near the glass transition occurs in multiple steps. The short-time $\beta$-relaxation is generally attributed to spatially local processes involving the rattling motion of a particle in the transient cage formed by its neighbors. Using molecular dynamics simulations for three model glass-forming liquids, we show that the $\beta$-relaxation is actually cooperative in nature. Using finite-size scaling analysis, we extract a growing length-scale associated with $\beta$-relaxation from the observed dependence of the $\beta$-relaxation time on the system size. Remarkably, the temperature dependence of this length scale is found to be the same as that of the length scale that describes the spatial heterogeneity of local dynamics in the long-time $\alpha$-relaxation regime. These results show that the conventional interpretation of $\beta$-relaxation as a local process is too simplified and provide a clear connection between short-time dynamics and long-time structural relaxation in glass-forming liquids.

Using all atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we have studied the mechanical properties of ZnS/CdS core/shell nanowires. Our results show that the coating of a few atomic layer CdS shell on the ZnS nanowire leads to a significant change in the stiffness of the core/shell nanowires compared to the stiffness of pure ZnS nanowires. The binding energy between the core and shell region decreases due to the lattice mismatch at the core-shell interface. This reduction in binding energy plays an important role in determining the stiffness of a core/shell nanowire. We have also investigated the effects of the shell on the thermal conductivity and melting behavior of the nanowires.

We study the equilibrium properties of an Ising model on a disordered random network where the disorder can be quenched or annealed. The network consists of four-fold coordinated sites connected via variable length one-dimensional chains. Our emphasis is on nonuniversal properties and we consider the transition temperature and other equilibrium thermodynamic properties, including those associated with one dimensional fluctuations arising from the chains. We use analytic methods in the annealed case, and a Monte Carlo simulation for the quenched disorder. Our objective is to study the difference between quenched and annealed results with a broad random distribution of interaction parameters. The former represents a situation where the time scale associated with the randomness is very long and the corresponding degrees of freedom can be viewed as frozen, while the annealed case models the situation where this is not so. We find that the transition temperature and the entropy associated with one dimensional fluctuations are always higher for quenched disorder than in the annealed case. These differences increase with the strength of the disorder up to a saturating value. It is frequently assumed that in the limit of vanishing cooling rate, the glass transition phenomenon becomes a thermodynamic transition at a temperature $T_{K}$. However, with any finite cooling rate, the system falls out of equilibrium at temperatures near $T_g(>T_{K})$, implying that the very existence of the putative thermodynamic phase transition at $T_{K}$ can be questioned. Recent studies of systems with randomly pinned particles have hinted that the thermodynamic glass transition may be observed in simulations and experiments carried out for liquids with randomly pinned particles. This expectation is based on the results of approximate calculations that suggest that the temperature of the thermodynamic glass transition increases as the concentration of pinned particles is increased and it may be possible to equilibrate the system at temperatures near the increased transition temperature. We test the validity of this prediction through extensive molecular dynamics simulations of two model glass-forming liquids in the presence of random pinning. We fit the temperature-dependence of the structural relaxation time to the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann form that predicts a divergence of the relaxation time at a temperature $T_{VFT}$ and identify this temperature with the thermodynamic transition temperature $T_K$. We find that $T_{VFT}$ does not show any sign of increasing with increasing concentration of pinned particles. The main effect of pinning is found to be a rapid decrease in the kinetic fragility of the system with increasing pin concentration. The breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein (SE) relation between diffusivity and viscosity at low temperatures is considered to be one of the hallmarks of glassy dynamics in liquids. Theoretical analyses relate this breakdown with the presence of heterogeneous dynamics, and by extension, with the fragility of glass formers. We perform an investigation of the breakdown of the SE relation in 2, 3 and 4 dimensions, in order to understand these interrelations. Results from simulations of model glass formers show that the degree of the breakdown of the SE relation decreases with increasing spatial dimensionality. The breakdown itself can be rationalized via the difference between the activation free energies for diffusivity and viscosity (or relaxation times) in the Adam-Gibbs relation in three and four dimensions. The behavior in two dimensions also can be understood in terms of a generalized Adam-Gibbs relation that is observed in previous work. We calculate various measures of heterogeneity of dynamics and find that the degree of the SE breakdown and measures of heterogeneity of dynamics are generally well correlated but with some exceptions. The two dimensional systems we study show deviations from the pattern of behavior of the three and four dimensional systems both at high and low temperatures. The fragility of the studied liquids is found to increase with spatial dimensionality, contrary to the expectation based on the association of fragility with heterogeneous dynamics.

We present a numerical study of a continuum plasticity field coupled to a Ginzburg-Landau model for superfluidity. The results suggest that a supersolid fraction may appear as a long-lived transient during the time evolution of the plasticity field at higher temperatures where both dislocation climb and glide are allowed. Supersolidity, however, vanishes with annealing. As the temperature is decreased, dislocation climb is arrested and any residual supersolidity due to incomplete annealing remains frozen. Motivated by many recent experimental studies of non-classical rotational inertia (NCRI) in superfluid and supersolid samples, we present a study of the hydrodynamics of a superfluid confined in the two-dimensional region (equivalent to a long cylinder) between two concentric arcs of radii $b$ and $a$ ($b \pi$, we find an unexpected divergence of the velocity at the origin, which implies the presence of either a region of normal fluid or a vortex for {\it any} nonzero value of the angular velocity. Implications of our results for experiments on "supersolid" behavior in solid $^4{\rm He}$ are discussed. We study the growing time scales and length scales associated with dynamical slow down for a realistic glass former, using computer simulations. We perform finite size scaling to evaluate a length scale associated with dynamical heterogeneity which grows as temperature decreases. However, relaxation times which also grow with decreasing temperature, do not show the same kind of scaling behavior with system size as the dynamical heterogeneity, indicating that relaxation times are not solely determined by the length scale of dynamical heterogeneity. We show that relaxation times are instead determined, for all studied system sizes and temperatures, by configurational entropy, in accordance with the Adam-Gibbs relation, but in disagreement with theoretical expectations based on spin-glass models that configurational entropy is not relevant at temperatures substantially above the critical temperature of mode coupling theory. The temperature dependence of the heterogeneity length scale shows significant deviations from theoretical expectations, and the length scale one may extract from the system size dependence of the configurational entropy has much weaker temperature dependence compared to the heterogeneity length scale at all studied temperatures. Our results provide new insights into the dynamics of glass-forming liquids and pose serious challenges to existing theoretical descriptions.

We have used atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the structure and dynamics of water molecules inside an open ended carbon nanotube placed in a bath of water molecules. The size of the nanotube allows only a single file of water molecules inside the nanotube. The water molecules inside the nanotube show solid-like ordering at room temperature, which we quantify by calculating the pair correlation function. It is shown that even for the longest observation times, the mode of diffusion of the water molecules inside the nanotube is Fickian and not sub-diffusive. We also propose a one-dimensional random walk model for the diffusion of the water molecules inside the nanotube. We find good agreement between the mean-square displacements calculated from the random walk model and from MD simulations, thereby confirming that the water molecules undergo normal-mode diffusion inside the nanotube. We attribute this behavior to strong positional correlations that cause all the water molecules inside the nanotube to move collectively as a single object. The average residence time of the water molecules inside the nanotube is shown to scale quadratically with the nanotube length., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

From numerical minimization of a model free energy functional for a system of hard spheres, we show that the width of the local peaks of the time-averaged density field at a glassy free-energy minimum exhibits large spatial variation, similar to that of the ``local Debye-Waller factor'' in simulations of dynamical heterogeneity. Molecular dynamics simulations starting from a particle configuration generated from the density distribution at a glassy free-energy minimum show similar spatial heterogeneity in the degree of localization, implying a direct connection between dynamical heterogeneity and the structure of glassy free energy minima., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We report numerical and analytic results for the spatial survival probability for fluctuating one-dimensional interfaces with Edwards-Wilkinson or Kardar-Parisi-Zhang dynamics in the steady state. Our numerical results are obtained from analysis of steady-state profiles generated by integrating a spatially discretized form of the Edwards-Wilkinson equation to long times. We show that the survival probability exhibits scaling behavior in its dependence on the system size and the `sampling interval' used in the measurement for both `steady-state' and `finite' initial conditions. Analytic results for the scaling functions are obtained from a path-integral treatment of a formulation of the problem in terms of one-dimensional Brownian motion. A `deterministic approximation' is used to obtain closed-form expressions for survival probabilities from the formally exact analytic treatment. The phase diagram of a polydisperse hard sphere system is examined by numerical minimization of a discretized form of the Ramakrishnan-Yussouff free energy functional. Crystalline and glassy local minima of the free energy are located and the phase diagram in the density-polydispersity plane is mapped out by comparing the free energies of different local minima. The crystalline phase disappears and the glass becomes the equilibrium phase beyond a "terminal" value of the polydispersity. A crystal to glass transition is also observed as the density is increased at high polydispersity. We numerically study a one-dimensional conserved growth equation with competing linear (Ehrlich-Schwoebel) and nonlinear instabilities. As a control parameter is varied, this model exhibits a non-equilibrium phase transition between two mounded states, one of which exhibits slope selection and the other does not. The coarsening behavior of mounds in these two phases is studied in detail. With a view to understanding the ``rheochaos'' observed in recent experiments in a variety of orientable fluids, we study numerically the equations of motion of the spatiotemporal evolution of the traceless symmetric order parameter of a sheared nematogenic fluid. In particular we establish, by decisive numerical tests, that the irregular oscillatory behavior seen in a region of parameter space where the nematic is not stably flow-aligning is in fact spatiotemporal chaos. We outline the dynamical phase diagram of the model and study the route to the chaotic state. We find that spatiotemporal chaos in this system sets in via a regime of {\em spatiotemporal intermittency}, with a power-law distribution of the widths of laminar regions, as in H. Chat\'{e} and P. Manneville, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 58}, 112 (1987). Further, the evolution of the histogram of band sizes shows a growing length-scale as one moves from the chaotic towards the flow aligned phase. Motivated by the observation of rheochaos in sheared wormlike micelles [Bandyopadhyay et al., Phys. Rev. Lett, 84 2022, (2000); Europhys. Lett. 56, 447 (2001); Pramana 53, 223 (1999)] we study the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations for the hydrodynamic velocity and order parameter fields in a sheared nematogenic fluid. We study a class of one-dimensional, nonequilibrium, conserved growth equations for both nonconserved and conserved noise statistics using numerical integration. An atomistic version of these growth equations is also studied using stochastic simulation. The models with nonconserved noise statistics are found to exhibit mound formation and power-law coarsening with slope selection for a range of values of the model parameters. Unlike previously proposed models of mound formation, the Ehrlich-Schwoebel step-edge barrier, usually modeled as a linear instability in growth equations, is absent in our models. Mound formation in our models occurs due to a nonlinear instability in which the height (depth) of spontaneously generated pillars (grooves) increases rapidly if the initial height (depth) is sufficiently large. When this instability is controlled by the introduction of an infinite number of higher-order gradient nonlinearities, the system exhibits a first-order dynamical phase transition from a rough self-affine phase to a mounded one as the value of the parameter that measures the effectiveness of control is decreased. We define a new ``order parameter'' that may be used to distinguish between these two phases. In the mounded phase, the system exhibits power-law coarsening of the mounds in which a selected slope is retained at all times. The coarsening exponents for the continuum equation and the discrete model are found to be different. An explanation of this difference is proposed and verified by simulations. In the growth equation with conserved noise, we find the curious result that the kinetically rough and mounded phases are both locally stable in a region of parameter space. We use numerical minimization of a model free energy functional to study the effects of columnar pinning centers on the structure and thermodynamics of a system of pancake vortices in the mixed phase of highly anisotropic layered superconductors. The magnetic field and the columnar pins are assumed to be perpendicular to the layers. Our methods allow us to study in detail the density distribution of vortices in real space. We present results for the dependence of the average number of vortices trapped at a pinning center on temperature and pinning strength, and for the effective interaction between nearby pinned vortices arising from short-range correlations in the vortex liquid. For a commensurate, periodic array of pinning centers, we find a line of first order vortex lattice melting transitions in the temperature $T$ vs. pin concentration $c$ plane, which terminates at an experimentally accessible critical point as $c$ is increased. Beyond this point, the transition is replaced by a crossover. We study the equilibrium and dynamical properties of the ANNNI (axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising) chain at the multiphase point. An interesting property of the system is the macroscopic degeneracy of the ground state leading to finite zero-temperature entropy. In our equilibrium study we consider the effect of softening the spins. We show that the degeneracy of the ground state is lifted and there is a qualitative change in the low temperature behaviour of the system with a well defined low temperature peak of the specific heat that carries the thermodynamic ``weight'' of the ground state entropy. In our study of the dynamical properties, the stochastic Kawasaki dynamics is considered. The Fokker-Planck operator for the process corresponds to a quantum spin Hamiltonian similar to the Heisenberg ferromagnet but with constraints on allowed states. We study the equilibrium properties of the nearest-neighbor Ising antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice in the presence of a staggered field conjugate to one of the degenerate ground states. Using a mapping of the ground states of the model without the staggered field to dimer coverings on the dual lattice, we classify the ground states into sectors specified by the number of ``strings''. We show that the effect of the staggered field is to generate long-range interactions between strings. In the limiting case of the antiferromagnetic coupling constant J becoming infinitely large, we prove the existence of a phase transition in this system and obtain a finite lower bound for the transition temperature. For finite J, we study the equilibrium properties of the system using Monte Carlo simulations with three different dynamics. We find that in all the three cases, equilibration times for low field values increase rapidly with system size at low temperatures. Due to this difficulty in equilibrating sufficiently large systems at low temperatures, our finite-size scaling analysis of the numerical results does not permit a definite conclusion about the existence of a phase transition for finite values of J. A surprising feature in the system is the fact that unlike usual glassy systems, a zero-temperature quench almost always leads to the ground state, while a slow cooling does not., Comment: 12 pages, 18 figures: To appear in Phys. We show from numerical simulations that a limited mobility solid-on-solid model of kinetically rough surface growth exhibits extended self-similarity analogous to that found in fluid turbulence. The range over which scale-independent power-law behavior is observed is significantly enhanced if two correlation functions of different order, such as those representing two different moments of the difference in height between two points, are plotted against each other.
