The present report pertains to the synthesis and characterization of six mixed-ligand complexes of [Zn(L)(pip-)2] (1) (L = 2,2′-bipyridine, pip =1,3-benzodioxole-5-carboxylate), [Zn(L)(mpp-)2·H2O]·H2O (2) (mpp =2-methyl-2-phenoxypropanoate), [Cu(L)(mca-)2]·5H2O (3) (mca = p-methoxycinnamate), [Cd(L)( mca-)2·2H2O] (4), [Cd(L)2(mpp-)2]·H2O (5) and [Cu(L)(pdp2-)0.5Cl·H2O]2·8H2O (6) (pdp =1,4-piperazinedipropionate). The resulting complexes were characterized from EA, IR, and single-crystal XRD analysis. The TGA of all complexes were also evaluated. Compound 2 is a 2D sheet; all other complexes are 3D supramolecular assemblies. Zn and Cd have octahedral coordination geometry and Cu tetrahedral or square-pyramidal coordination. The single-crystal XRD studies showed that 1-5 are mononuclear, while 6 is a centrosymmetric dinuclear complex. The 2,2′-bipyridines are chelating bidentate to the metal ions. The COO- is monodentate in 2-6, while COO- in 1 has chelating bidentate coordination. The pyridine 3(3′)-CH participated in the CH-O contact in each compound. The intricate intra- and intermolecular classical H-bonds, CH-Cl, C-H···O, CH2···O, CH3···O, O···π, C-π, C-H···π, CH3-π, and π-π associations are elucidated from the X-ray crystallographic studies bringing the discrete complexes into high-dimensional ordered supramolecular structures. Four new transition metal coordination complexes, [Cd(H2pimdc)2(H2O)2] · 4H2O (1), [Zn(H2pimdc)2(H2O)2]2 · 7H2O (2), and [M(H2pimdc)2] (M = Cu (3) or Ni (4), H2pimdc- = 2-propyl-4,5-imidazoledicarboxylate), have been prepared by conventional synthesis and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. H2pimdc- is a bidentate chelating ligand in 1 and 2, leading to 3-D supramolecular structures through hydrogen bonds. However, H2pimdc- is a tridentate chelating-bridge ligand in 3 and 4, which exhibit 2-D layer structures. Thermal properties and photoluminescence spectra of 1-4 were measured. The title coordination polymer, {[Cu2(C6H15N2O)2(C10H8N2)](ClO4)2} n, was synthesized from 4,4′-bipyridine, N-hydroxypropyl-1,3-propanediamine and copper(II) per­chlorate. Structural analysis shows that each copper ion is coordinated by the 4,4′-bipyridine mol­ecule through one N atom, and by two N-hydroxypropyl-1,3-propanediamine ligands through the O atom and two N atoms of one, and the O atom from the second, giving a distorted square-pyramidal geometry. Nine coordination compounds, namely, Cu(Hdmpz) 2 (L1) 2 ( 1 ) (Hdmpz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole, L1 = 4-methylbenzoate), Cu(Hdmpz) 2 (L2) 2 ( 2 ) (L2 = 3-methylbenzoate), Cu(Hdmpz) 2 (L3) 2 ( 3 ) (L3 = 2-chlorobenzoate), Cu(Hdmpz) 2 (L4) 2 ( 4 ) (L4 = 2-chloronicotinate), Cu(Hdmpz) 2 (L5) 2 ( 5 ) (L5 = 4-methoxybenzoate), Cu(Hdmpz) 2 (L6) 2 ( 6 ) (L6 = 1-naphthylacetate), Cu 2 (Hdmpz) 4 (L7) 2 ( 7 ) (L7 = 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate), Cu(Hdmpz) 2 (L8) ( 8 ) (L8 = terephthalate) and Cu 3 (Hdmpz) 9 (L9) 2 ·Hdmpz ( 9 ) (L9 = trimesate) have been synthesized by the self-assembly of copper acetate, 3,5-dimethylpyrazole and carboxylate ligands at room temperature. All the compounds were structurally characterized by different techniques, including elemental analysis, IR spectra, TG and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The X-ray studies suggested that these complexes display mononuclear to trinuclear structures with tetrahedral (for compounds 1 – 8 ) or distorted square pyramidal (for compound 9 ) geometries around the copper ion. The pyrazole and carboxylate groups in all the compounds are only coordinated in the monodentate fashion. The uncoordinated oxygen atom of the carboxylate groups in all of the compounds forms intramolecular/intermolecular hydrogen bonding with the N–H group of the coordinated 3,5-dimethylpyrazole. On the basis of the X-ray crystallographic study, the rich intra- and intermolecular N–H⋯O hydrogen bonds, and other weak interactions, including CH 3 –C π , Cl⋯O, C–H⋯O, CH 3 ⋯O, C–H⋯π, CH 3 –π, and π–π associations, are analyzed. The various non-bonding interactions in these compounds are responsible for different structures such as sheet, 3D network and 3D layer structures. The thermal stabilities for 1 – 9 were examined and the results show that the complexes seem to be good candidates for novel inorganic–organic hybrid materials with good thermal stability. Abstract: A novel Salen-type ligand and its four complexes, [LnL(NO3)3] [Ln=La (1), Nd (2), Eu (3), Tb (4)], were synthesized. The X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis indicates that the ML type complexes [LaL(NO3)3] and [NdL(NO3)3] are isomorphous. With a proton migration (or transfer) from the phenol function to the imine function, coordination of Ln to the ligand gives the ligand a zwitterionic phenoxo-iminium form. The luminescent property of the Tb(III) complex is described and some factors that influence the luminescent intensity were also discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
