The amusement company Six Flags Inc.'s Vernon, New Jersey-based amusement park Hurricane Harbor, did not add any rides this year but they will be utilizing Play Money, a debittype card that is held on a keychain, at the park for the first time. "Other Six Flags parks have used this idea and it works great," said Kristen Siebeneicher, PR manager for the park.

Charlie Brusco, executive vice president of TBA Entertainment Management, said that as usual, country music is ahead in routing this year. He said that there are some packages that might go out as far as classic rock is concerned, but nothing is definite in that genre yet.

Several carnival owners feel that the advent of the cellular phone has been a godsend to the communications of the amusement industry. In the days before cellular phones, a show had to call the phone company to have a line turned on each time it traveled to a different spot. If the phones did get turned on in time, the show paid for the whole month, even though it used the line for much less than that. “The phones rarely were on when you got to the spot,” said John Tolve of Lyndhurst, New Jersey-based Tolve Presentations. Applications of cellular phones have included a full range of solutions that benefit the traveling amusement industry, including integrated voice and mobile data and a reliable and seamless network that can significantly improve the show's bottom line. The phones offer wireless processes for e-mail, timesheets, scheduling, and dispatching among other things. Cellular phones with Internet access take it one step further, allowing the user to check everything from the weather to electronic mail.

San Francisco-based Signatures Network Inc., which will also work with performers Madonna, Reba McEntire, Gloria Estefan and others this summer, sells items in all price ranges, from $5 key chains to $250 collectible jackets.

While national franchises do well at some larger parks contacted by the periodical "Amusement Business," (AB) most midsize and smaller parks prefer to do food in house or take on local franchises. George Frantzis, vice president of Quassy Amusement Park, Middlebury, told AB that while the park is not adding any new food this year, it will continue with the value meal options started by the park last year. While the branded idea of using value meals is utilized at the park, Frantzis told AB that the actual branded food is not as important.

Visionlatid, in Bessemer, Alabama, will premier a new 750,000 dollar thrill water ride made by Amusement Leisure Worldwide when sister park Splash Beach opens on May 15, 2004. Southland President and Chief Executive Kent Lemasters told Aβ that the ride, Splash Down, travels at about 30 miles per hour through a 103 foot tube. To get to the slide, patrons climb 170 steps to the top of the 50 foot tower shared by last year's addition to the water park, Acapulco Drop. Southland Entertainment LLC, which in late 2002 purchased Visionland from the 11 city agency that launched the park to great fanfare and eventual failure, is considering ways to bolster attendance over the next five years.

Manager and entrepreneur Irving Azoff and entertainment industry executive Robert Geddes have acquired live events producer TBA Entertainment Corp. The deal was done via a partnership with JHW Greentree Capital LLC. Under terms of the merger agreement, the partnership will acquire all of TBA's stock for cash consideration in the amount of $6,150,000, which, after deduction of certain transaction expenses, results in net consideration of $0.67 per share of common stock and $0.70 per share of preferred stock.

This year's slight increase in grandstand revenues and attendance over 2002 is being attributed to a healthier economy and successful mid-size acts, according to many of the booking agents, talent buyers and personal managers contacted by the periodical "Amusement Business," as of December 22, 2003. Charlie Brusco, executive vice president of TEA Entertainment Management in Roswell, Georgia, said that the grandstand business was fairly good this year, the only downfall being the weather. "A lot of fairs suffered with the weather in the early part of the season," Brusco said.

Bad weather and a soft economy have taken a 40% bite out of revenues this year for Jones Food Concessions, Wauchula, Florida. The 30-year-old concession business, owned by Kathy and Joe Jones, begins its season in March at the Strawberry Festival in Florida. They travel through Southern Florida in April then go into the Midwest or as they did this year, the Fast Coast. The Jones' employ four people beside themselves for the three trailers that travel together from spot to spot.

New dates and a new chicken act program are keeping things in the right place for Connie Boger and Bunky Boger, owners of Animal Specialties, based in Lowell, Arkansas, despite a spring season that has seen more rain than all of last year combined. The problem with the early year rain washout is that the Bogers were planning on using 2003 as a measuring tool to decide next year's expansion plans. While the usual fair fee for a two-tent attraction is $ 1,000, the cost covers travel and animal feed only. The real bread and butter is in the sale of animal feed for the petting portion of the attraction, the $ 3 pony rides, and the $ 5 fee for photos taken with the animals.

The summer fixed festival circuit has begun in earnest throughout North America, and once again music lovers can come for the day, spend the weekend or stay for a week or longer. Fixed music festivals, or festivals that do not tour, usually take one of two formats. They either target a family demographic with a variety of music or they utilize the European-style niche configuration seen at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, staged in the Southern California desert, or at Bonnaroo, held 60 miles south of Nashville. Good weather has been a blessing for the amusement company Stipe's Shows, White Bear, Minnesota, so far this year, keeping revenues up despite increasing fuel and insurance prices. "We have played four spots and the weather has been great," said co-owner Barry Stipe. Because of the increasing prices during the past couple of years, the show, which plays 25 dates throughout their home state of Minnesota and Wisconsin, has depended on Stipe's food trailer to fatten the bottom line. Stipe's has three county fairs in Minnesota and a number of celebrations.

Some amusement park Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio visitors that previously fit into the Millennium coaster might not be able to this year. On a directive from the ride's manufacturer, Switzerland-based Intamin, the restraints on the coaster have been modified this year to be more restrictive. Robin Innes, PR director at the park, would not say whether the modified restraints were in response to the recent tragedy in at a Six Flags, but ChannelCincinnati.com said "Cedar Point officials say the ride's manufacturer mandated the seatbelt brackets be repositioned after a man was killed when he fell off the Superman coaster at Six Flags Inc., New England." Theme park operator Six Flags Inc. at the beginning of May said the park would improve the safety features on its Superman Ride of Steel roller coaster after a rider was killed.

This year, amusement company Bush's Baked Beans will be the title sponsor of the duel location Family Zone during the CMA Music Festival/Fan Fair June 10-13, in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Introduced in 2001, this popular CMA Music Festival element continues to expand. In 2004, the Bush's Baked Beans Family Zone will be on Broadway between First and Second Avenues and at the Hall of Fame Park, across the street from the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum at Fifth Avenue and Demonbreun Street. Howard Miller, owner of Nancy's Concessions and Porky's, told that the season has been off by about 10% this year. "The weather has been great, but the people just are not coming out as much as prior years," said Miller. "Personally, I think it is because of the economy." At the beginning of the month, the concession, which is based out of Lafayette, Indiana, played two bike rallies simultaneously, one in North Carolina and one in Nevada. The concessions will start in Indiana in June and travel between that, Virginia and North Carolina for most of the summer, then head to Florida in the winter.

A falling tree branch killed a 5-year-old boy and injured his mother at Lake Compounce theme park in Southington, Connecticut and a 3-year-old boy was hurt after falling out of a carnival ride at the Manchester Parkade shopping mall. The fatality occurred at Lake Compounce on the evening of May 16. Larry Piretti, spokesperson for the park, told that the Southington Police Department had completed its on-site investigation and concluded the incident was a natural occurrence. Piretti told that the mother and son were on their way from the park's trolley barn and passing the miniature golf area at 7:15 p.m. when a six-inch diameter tree limb fell from the tree, striking both of them.

Atlantic City, Pennsylvania's first family entertainment attraction opens this summer with the 17,000-square-foot, $15 million PassPort: Voyages of Discovery. The attraction will open in early June 2004 at The Walk on Michigan Avenue, adjacent to the 486,000-square-foot Atlantic City Convention Center. Atlantic City is the first Northeast location for this state-of-the-art, multi-sensory, family entertainment attraction. The entertainment complex encompasses three experiences, where patrons can see, hear, feel and ride the action. The ride uses film, motion-based seats and special effects to immerse audiences in the experience. The project is the brainchild of International Tourist Attractions, a European creator and producer of multimedia, multi-sensory entertainment attractions.

The first ride on grounds at the new Blue Diamond Amusement Park, New Castle, Delaware. Other attractions, including a paintball field and two 18 hole miniature golf courses, are also in place at the 400 acre site owned by the Greggo& Ferrara construction company. The company has seen a decline in budgets for New Year's fireworks since the Millennium. Vitale told that while there was a definite drop in corporate work during 2002 and most of 2003, things are looking up again.

Frank LoPresti, creator of Minnesota's Twin City Ribfest and Rib America Festivals, has been promoted to vice president of the group. The new Festival/Events group will be responsible for creating new content for CCE venues and tours that will range from larger, European-style music tours to Ribfest-style events throughout the country. In addition, the group will also produce specific programs such as open houses, holiday and consumer interest shows and auctions.

Tony Conway, president of Buddy Lee Attractions in Nashville, Tennessee has been in the music business for more than 30 years. Beginning his career booking acts after college in Lexington, Kentucky, Conway hooked up with musicians Peace and Quiet, who worked as Crystal Gayle's backup band when she was on tour. The band told Conway he should move to Nashville and get into business there, which he did in 1974. In this article Conway is talking about the ups and downs of the constantly changing country music industry. In 2003, the touring business was up between 18% and 20% in general, and between 10% and 12% in the country music genre, in particular. The Ketcham family, owners and operators of amusement events company Ketcham's Concessions, expanded their season and route in 2003 by traveling with Wade Shows Inc. Jon and Dee Ketcham started the concession business 25 years back. At first, Jon and Dee played with Gooding's Million Dollar Midways that routed through the South. Later, the concession traveled with Otto's Amusements Oscar's Amusements and for the last 20 years, S&S Amusements. Besides Dee, Jon and daughter, Sara, Ketcham's Concessions is run by Jon and Dee's son Dan and youngest daughter Kate.

Artist Reba McEntire will launch one of the most anticipated tours of the year when she hits the road this March. The tour will encompass at least two dozen shows in as many cities during her first tour in last three years. Brian Leedham, production manager for McEntire, has also done tours for the Goo Goo Dolls and Lollapalooza. This tour will focus on the body of work McEntire has created over the past two-plus decades, a career that has produced dozens of No. 1 and Top 10 singles. The tour this year will visit primarily outdoor venues and casinos. In many markets, the outdoor venues will consist of fairs and festivals, including the tour's kick-off date, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, March 7.

Despite a soggy season for Midway Park, Maple Springs, New York, which resulted in a 4% decline in revenues, park owner Janis Walsh is looking to a bright 2004 with a major catering expansion. The catering expansion will take place at the park's 80-year-old roller skating rink, which features inside and outside skating circles. During the 2003 season, the park rented the tables and chairs during the events, as well as catered out most of the food. In addition to the roller rink, the park also offers nine major rides, nine kiddie rides, two water rides and a Heritage Tour of the 16th oldest continually operating amusement park in the nation.
