Mobile phones and various electronic products contribute to the world's fastest-growing category of hazardous waste with international repercussions. We investigated the trends in potential human health impacts and ecotoxicity of waste mobile phones through quantitative life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods and regulatory total threshold limit concentrations. A market-dominant sample of waste basic phones and smartphones manufactured between 2001 and 2015, were analyzed for toxicity trends based on 19 chemicals. The results of the LCIA (using USEtox model) show an increase in the relative mass of toxic materials over the 15-year period. We found no significant changes in the use of toxic components in basic phones, whereas smartphones contained a statistically significant increase in the content of toxic materials from 2006 to 2015. Nickel contributed the largest risk for carcinogens in mobile phones, but the contributions of lead and beryllium were also notable. Silver, zinc and copper contents were associated with non-cancer health risks. Copper components at 45,818-77,938 PAF m3/kg dominated ecotoxicity risks in mobile phones. Overall, these results highlight the increasing importance of monitoring trends in materials use for electronic product manufacturing and electronic-waste management processes that should prevent human and environmental exposures to toxic components.

Cathode ray tube televisions (TVs) contributes significantly to the rapidly increasing waste stream of cathode ray tubes in the e-waste. This study mainly focused on the material flow of waste cathode ray tube TVs in China. Currently, waste cathode ray tubes constitute a major part of the total generation of e-waste in China. The study aimed to emphasise the flow of materials in the generated waste cathode ray tube TVs by using stock-based material flow analysis model. The modelling was conducted to investigate the disposable number of obsolete devices, in-use stock, and end-of-life of cathode ray tube TVs. SubSTance flow ANalysis (STAN) software was used to perform the material flow analysis modelling and graphical model of the waste cathode ray tube TVs. The results show that in a period of 10 years, overall about 3241.37 kt of cathode ray tube TVs were net produced in China, containing 183.6 kt of glass, 1718.2 kt of plastic, 243 kt of steel/iron, 153.5 kt of lead, 76.6 kt of copper, 7.8 kt of aluminium, and 1.6 kt of antimony. The results revealed that almost 125 kt of end-of-life cathode ray tube TVs containing about 68 kt of glass, 40 kt of plastic, 9 kt of steel/iron, 6 kt of lead, 3 kt of copper, 0.3 kt of aluminium, and 0.07 kt of antimony were dumped in the period of 10 years. Therefore, the management of waste cathode ray tube TVs required better infrastructure for recycling and better regulation to achieve better results in the high recovery of valuable resources. Waste printed circuit board (PCB) is attracting serious concerns because the recycling of its valuable metallic portion is made difficult by the existence of hazardous substances. The objective of the present study was to develop a simplified approach for copper bioleaching from waste PCB. In this context, we intended mechano-microbial systems symbolized as SET-I (spore suspension + potato dextrose broth medium + waste PCB powder), SET-II (pre-cultured until the logarithmic phase, without waste PCB powder), and SET-III (fungal metabolites produced at stationary phase). The results of bioleaching studies showed that the developed method achieved the highest copper leaching of 85% by the SET-III approach. This study provides an insight for bioleaching copper from waste PCB. Furthermore, this approach can be established as an ecofriendly method for copper bioleaching by using an integrated system. Abstract Brief background E-waste generation has become a serious environmental challenge worldwide. The global quantity of e-waste was estimated 44.7 million metric tons (Mt) in 2016. The improper recycling of e-waste is still a challenging issue in developing countries. Objective The objectives of this a review article to present comprehensive information of recent studied on environment pollution and effect on human health in China. Method The search engines consulted, period of publications reviewed 2015–2018. For search study, we used different key words: 'improper recycling', 'primitive recycling,' 'backyard recycling,' 'e-waste,' 'WEEE', and the studies related to improper recycling of e-waste. Results According to reports, the e-waste recycled by unorganized sectors in China. These unorganized sector workers daily go for work, such as e-waste collection from consumer house and manual dismantling of e-waste by using simple method, at unauthorized workshop. These backyard workshop are reported in small clusters in or around city e.g., Qingyuan village; Taizhou, Longtang Town, Guiyu, nearby Nanyang River and Beigang River in China. Discussion The earlier reported studies directed the heavy metals effect (causing effects both acute and chronic effects; respiratory irritation, reproductive problem, cardiovascular and urinary infection/disease) on human health. According the reports, the improper recycling of e-waste which need to be address for the environment protection and prevention of public health risk. However, if e-waste exposure is not avoided very well, the associated contamination will be continuing, and simultaneously needful to increase the awareness for proper e-waste management in China. Conclusions In order to solve the e-waste problem in China, more detail research is needed. Furthermore, for environment protection and health safety, the proper e-waste dismantling techniques, environmentally sound management, and the regular monitoring are very important. Globally, electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) is now a part of daily life. When this equipment becomes waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE or E-waste), however, it needs to be properly processed, for use as a source of materials for future production and renewable energy, and to minimize both the exploitation of raw materials and the deleterious effects on both the environment and human health. A large quantity of e-waste is generated in both India and China, and both countries still suffer from an entrenched informal e-waste processing sector. Consequently, valuable materials in e-waste are disposed in open land, rather than being properly extracted for reuse and recycling. In this article we note that the major portion of e-waste in China and India is collected by the informal sector and treated with primitive methods. Additionally, illegal shifting agents also play a role by mislabeling e-waste and exporting them to developing countries. This article proposes that: the implementation of e-waste management laws and policies for proper e-waste collection, treatment and recycling, better educate consumers on the dangers of e-waste contamination, restrict the illegal movement of e-waste across borders, and support the development of a formal, regulated e-waste processing industry by funding incentive programs constructing recycling infrastructure. Management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has recently attracted worldwide attention because of high metal concentrations in them. Evolution of toxic and precious metals utilized in WEEE can not only reflect the adventure of eco-design, but can also guide the final recycling option. Pb, As, Cu, Au, Sn and Ag were determined in 10 composite samples of printed circuit boards of cathode ray tube televisions (TV–PCBs) that were produced between 1980 and 2005. The obtained results indicated that average metal concentrations in all TV–PCBs were – Cu: 10.6 ± 4.1%, Sn: 4.21 ± 0.90%, Pb: 3.15 ± 0.54%, Ag: 0.0215 ± 0.0068%, Au: 0.0068 ± 0.0049% and As: 0.0007 ± 0.0004%. No remarkable difference was found in compositions of Pb and Sn over the years, suggesting that there were no major modifications of Sn/Pb solder used in joining the circuitry system. The average composition of Cu fluctuated between 5.10% in 1980 and 12.8% in the mid-1990s and decreased afterwards. The decreases in Ag and Cu compositions could possibly be associated with thinner layers of these metals in newer model products. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Increasing concerns on resource depletion and environmental pollution have largely obliged electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) should be tackled in an environmentally sound manner. Recycling process development is regarded as the most effective and fundamental to solve the e-waste problem. Based on global achievements related to e-waste recycling in the past 15 years, we first propose a theory to design an e-waste recycling process, including measuring e-waste recyclability and selection of recycling process. And we summarize the indicators and tools in terms of resource dimension, environmental dimension, and economic dimension, to examine the e-waste recycling process. Using the sophisticated experience and adequate information of e-waste management, spent lithium-ion batteries and waste printed circuit boards are chosen as case studies to implement and verify the proposed method. The management of used cathode ray tube (CRT) devices is a major problem worldwide due to rapid uptake of the technology and early obsolescence of CRT devices, which is considered an environment hazard if disposed improperly. Previously, their production has grown in step with computer and television demand but later on with rapid technological innovation; TVs and computer screens has been replaced by new products such as Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) and Plasma Display Panel (PDPs). This change creates a large volume of waste stream of obsolete CRTs waste in developed countries and developing countries will be becoming major CRTs waste producers in the upcoming years. We studied that there is also high level of trans-boundary movement of these devices as second-hand electronic equipment into developing countries in an attempt to bridge the ‘digital divide’. Moreover, the current global production of e-waste is estimated to be ‘41 million tonnes per year’ where a major part of the e-waste stream consists of CRT devices. Electrical and electronic waste (e-waste), is an emerging and fast growing waste stream in the world. Among all the e-waste, cathode ray tubes (CRTs) are significantly recyclable in principle, but in practice, recycling is often inefficient because of limits imposed by hazardous behavior, recycling technologies, and the composition of glass. These topics were studied in this paper based on their characteristics and concluded the recycling challenges and most recent developed recycling technologies that could improve recycling rates. As a global society, we are currently far away from a closed-loop material system because the demand for CRT glass closed-loop recycling is extremely limited. However, much improvement is possible through recent developed recycling technologies but the challenge for the future is to transfer these environmentally friendly and energy-saving technologies into practice. The viability of closed-loop recycling of electronics can sustain the future development of the flourishing electronics industry. Identification for the recyclability of e-waste (or WEEE) plays an enhanced role in process designing and policy making. However, precise measurements of recyclability, subjected to resource reclamation and environmental protection analysis, have not yet been well recognized. This study defines the rules of grade determination for various materials in any given WEEE, then combines these rules with the Statistical Entropy function, to develop an innovative model to measure the recyclability, emphasizing the product design stage, in order to significantly promote qualitative to quantitative eco-design. Using this model, not only e-waste recycling can be partitioned into three levels of difficulty, but also the measurement method can be employed to divide the responsibility for electronics recycling between producer and recycler. Informal recycling of waste (including e-waste) is an emerging source of environmental pollution in India. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and heavy metals, among other substances, are a major health concern for workers engaged in waste disposal and processing, and for residents living near these facilities, and are also a detriment to the natural environment. The main objective of this review article was to evaluate the status of these impacts. The review found that, huge quantity of e-waste/waste generated, only a small amount is treated formally; the remainder is processed through the informal sector. We also evaluated the exposure pathways, both direct and indirect, and the human body load markers (e.g., serum, blood, breast milk, urine, and hair), and assessed the evidence for the association between these markers and e-waste exposure. Our results indicated that the open dumping and informal e-waste recycling systems should be replaced by the best available technology and environmental practices, with proper monitoring and regular awareness programs for workers and residents. The rapid growth of the production of electrical and electronic products has meant an equally rapid growth in the amount of electronic waste (e-waste), much of which is illegally imported to India, for disposal presenting a serious environmental challenge. The environmental impact during e-waste recycling was investigated and metal as well as other pollutants [e.g. polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)] were found in excessive levels in soil, water and other habitats. The most e-waste is dealt with as general or crudely often by open burning, acid baths, with recovery of only a few materials of value. As resulted of these process; dioxins, furans, and heavy metals are released and harmful to the surrounding environment, engaged workers, and also residents inhabiting near the sites. The informal e-waste sectors are growing rapidly in the developing countries over than in the developed countries because of cheapest labor cost and week legislations systems. It has been confirmed that contaminates are moving through the food chain via root plant translocation system, to the human body thereby threatening human health. E-waste has become one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world, and has attracted worldwide attention. However, very little research on e-waste has focused on waste office equipment. In this study, we chose waste printers as the typical waste office equipment, to investigate the generation and management status of this type of e-waste in China. Using the Stanford and Gompertz Curve models, we estimated the generated volume of waste printers to be 39.15 million units in 2014; this volume can be expected to increase to 57.15 million units in 2025. Twenty private enterprises and public institutions, 4 small retailers, 7 second-hand recyclers, 3 producers, 4 informal dismantling points, and 4 formal recycling enterprises were investigated, to understand the life-cycle flow of waste printers, from usage into collection channels, to treatment. Similar to other e-waste in China, at present storage is still the most common disposal method, accounting for about 54% of the discarded printers. For the remaining 46%, small retailers and second-hand markets are still the primary collection channel in China. Although formal recycling enterprises and producers have also set about recycling waste printers in China, the informal sector still dominates the treatment market for waste printers. The EPR management system of e-waste has now been established in China, and some producers have also attempted to collect and recycle their own waste printers, but the EPR principle is still not the primary model for recycling waste printers. Over the last decade, there has been much effort to promote the management of e-waste in China. Policies have been affected to prohibit imports and to control pollution. Research has been conducted in laboratories and on large-scale industrial operations. A subsidy system to support sound e-waste recycling has been put in place. However, the handling of e-waste is still a concern in China and the issue remains unresolved. There has been relatively little work to follow up this issue or to interpret continuing problems from the perspective of sustainable development. This paper first provides a brief overview of conventional and emerging environmental pollution in Chinese 'famous' e-waste dismantling areas, including Guiyu in Guangdong and Wenling in Zhejiang. Environmentalists have repeatedly proven that these areas are significantly polluted. Importing and backyard recycling are decreasing but are ongoing. Most importantly, no work is being done to treat or remediate the contaminated environmental media. The situation is exacerbated by the rising tide of e-waste generated by domestic update of various electronics. This study, therefore, employs a Sales Obsolescence Model approach to predict the generation of e-waste. When accounting for weight, approximately 8 million tons of e-waste will be generated domestically in 2015, of which around 50 % is ferrous metals, followed by miscellaneous plastic (30 %), copper metal and cables (8 %), aluminum (5 %), and others (7 %). Of this, 3.6 % will come from scrap PCBs and 0.2 % from lead CRT glass. While more and more end-of-life electronics have been collected and treated by formal or licensed recyclers in China in terms of our analysis, many of them only have dismantling and separation activities. Hazardous e-wastes, including those from PCBs, CRT glass, and brominated flame retardant (BFR) plastics, have become problematic and probably flow to small or backyard recyclers without environmentally sound management. Traditional technologies are still being used to recover precious metals-such as cyanide method of gold hydrometallurgy-from e-waste. While recovery rates of precious metals from e-waste are above 50 %, it has encountered some challenges from environmental considerations. Worse, many critical metals contained in e-waste are lost because the recovery rates are less than 1 %. This research focused on the application of the hydrothermal sulphidisation method to separate lead from scrap cathode ray tube funnel glass. Prior to hydrothermal treatment, the cathode ray tube funnel glass was pretreated by mechanical activation. Under hydrothermal conditions, hydroxyl ions (OH–) were generated through an ion exchange reaction between metal ions in mechanically activated funnel glass and water, to accelerate sulphur disproportionation; no additional alkaline compound was needed. Lead contained in funnel glass was converted to lead sulphide with high efficiency. Temperature had a significant effect on the sulphidisation rate of lead in funnel glass, which increased from 25% to 90% as the temperature increased from 100 °C to 300 °C. A sulphidisation rate of 100% was achieved at a duration of 8 h at 300 °C. This process of mechanical activation and hydrothermal sulphidisation is efficient and promising for the treatment of leaded glass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mobile e-waste recycling equipment was chosen as the object of this study, including manual dismantling, mechanical separation of cathode ray tubes (CRTs), and printed circuit boards (PCBs) in the two independent workshops. To determine the potential environmental contamination, the noise, the heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Pb), and the environmental impacts of the e-waste recycling processes in the two workshops of the mobile plant have been evaluated in this paper. This study determined that when control measures are employed, the noise within the two workshops (<80 dB) will meet the national standards. In the CRT workshop, Pb was the most polluting metal, with 2.3 μg/m and 10.53 mg/g in the air and floor dust, respectively. The result of a health risk assessment shows that noncancerous effects are possible for Pb (hazard index (HI) = 3.54 in the CRT workshop and HI = 1.27 in the PCB workshop). The carcinogenic risks to workers for Cd are relatively light in both the workshops. From the results of life cycle assessment (LCA), it can be seen that there was an environmental benefit from the e-waste recycling process as a whole. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE or e-waste) recycling industries in China have been through several phases from spontaneous informal family workshops to qualified enterprises with treatment fund. This study attempts to analyse the development potential of the e-waste recycling industry in China from the perspective of both time and scale potential. An estimation and forecast of e-waste quantities in China shows that, the total e-waste amount reached approximately 5.5 million tonnes in 2013, with 83% of air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions sand computers. The total quantity is expected to reach ca. 11.7 million tonnes in 2020 and 20 million tonnes in 2040, which indicates a large increase potential. Moreover, the demand for recycling processing facilities, the optimal service radius of e-waste recycling enterprises and estimation of the profitability potential of the e-waste recycling industry were analysed. Results show that, based on the e-waste collection demand, e-waste recycling enterprises therefore have a huge development potential in terms of both quantity and processing capacity, with 144 and 167 e-waste recycling facilities needed, respectively, by 2020 and 2040. In the case that e-waste recycling enterprises set up their own collection points to reduce the collection cost, the optimal collection service radius is estimated to be in the range of 173 km to 239 km. With an e-waste treatment fund subsidy, the e-waste recycling industry has a small economic profit, for example ca. US$2.5/unit for television. In the past 20 years, the booming consumer electronics (CE) industry has been rapidly changing the economic and social landscape. This phenomenon is partly raised by the development of ecodesign, which is dedicated to improving the environmental performance of CE, throughout its life cycle. The theory and application of ecodesign have both been improved and expanded, owing largely to the development of more environmentally friendly materials, newly emerging technology, and legislation mandating better handling of CE—both in manufacturing and in waste treatment. Yet many challenges and opportunities remain, including the pressure that the huge CE market exerts on resources; new materials and technology such as carbon nanomaterial and the Internet of Things; the need to balance business profit with environmental impacts and benefits; and a significant shift of focus in the processing of electronic waste—from dismantling for recycling to disassembly for remanufacturing. This critical review article can help create sustainable development strategies from a local solution to global opportunities that will elevate ecodesign or design for environment to a new level in new materials selecting, CE industry development, integrated e-waste management, and legislation. As the world’s leading manufacturing country, China has become the largest dumping ground for e-waste, resulting in serious pollution of heavy metals in China. This study reviews recent studies on environmental effects of heavy metals from the e-waste recycling sites in China, especially Taizhou, Guiyu, and Longtang. The intensive uncontrolled processing of e-waste in China has resulted in the release of large amounts of heavy metals in the local environment, and caused high concentrations of metals to be present in the surrounding air, dust, soils, sediments and plants. Though the pollution of many heavy metals was investigated in the relevant researches, the four kinds of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Cd and Cr) from e-waste recycling processes attracted more attention. The exceedance of various national and international standards imposed negative effects to the environment, which made the local residents face with the serious heavy metal exposure. Abstract: As China is one of the countries facing the most serious pollution and human exposure effects of e-waste in the world, much of the population there is exposed to potentially hazardous substances due to informal e-waste recycling processes. This report reviews recent studies on human exposure to e-waste in China, with particular focus on exposure routes (e.g. dietary intake, inhalation, and soil/dust ingestion) and human body burden markers (e.g. placenta, umbilical cord blood, breast milk, blood, hair, and urine) and assesses the evidence for the association between such e-waste exposure and the human body burden in China. The results suggest that residents in the e-waste exposure areas, located mainly in the three traditional e-waste recycling sites (Taizhou, Guiyu, and Qingyuan), are faced with a potential higher daily intake of these pollutants than residents in the control areas, especially via food ingestion. Moreover, pollutants (PBBs, PBDEs, PCBs, PCDD/Fs, and heavy metals) from the e-waste recycling processes were all detectable in the tissue samples at high levels, showing that they had entered residents' bodies through the environment and dietary exposure. Children and neonates are the groups most sensitive to the human body effects of e-waste exposure. We also recorded plausible outcomes associated with exposure to e-waste, including 7 types of human body burden. Although the data suggest that exposure to e-waste is harmful to health, better designed epidemiological investigations in vulnerable populations, especially neonates and children, are needed to confirm these associations. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers with persistent organic pollutant properties are required to be controlled by the Stockholm Convention. Recently, polybrominated diphenyl ether contamination has become widespread in Asia, mainly because of the disposal and recycling processes of polybrominated diphenyl ether-containing wastes. The management status, production, usage, import/export, treatment, and disposal, as well as implementation deficiencies for the environmentally sound management of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polybrominated diphenyl ether-containing materials in ten Asian countries were investigated and assessed in this study. This information could help the participating countries implement the Stockholm Convention and could promote the regional environmentally sound management of polybrominated diphenyl ether-containing articles and products. The results obtained were as follows. (1) Most of the countries studied lacked environmental policies and regulations, or even standards of polybrominated diphenyl ether pollution management and emission control actions. Accurate data on the consumption and importation of polybrominated diphenyl ether-containing materials, however, were not available for all the participating countries. In addition, there were no special treatment or disposal systems for polybrominated diphenyl ether-containing materials, or emission-cutting measures for the treatment of waste in these countries, owing to the lack of sufficient funding or technologies. (2) The improper dismantling of e-waste is a major source of polybrominated diphenyl ether emissions in these countries. (3) Proper e-waste management could result in a breakthrough in the environmentally sound management of this major polybrominated diphenyl ether-containing material flow, and could significantly reduce polybrominated diphenyl ether emissions. Finally, based on the study results, this article puts forward some recommendations for improving the environmentally sound management of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in Asia. The purpose of this work was to achieve a better understanding of the generation of toxic chemicals related to specific processes in scrap computer recycling and disposal, such as thermal recycling of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and the landfilling or dumping of cathode ray tubes (CRTs). Tube furnace pyrolysis was carried out to simulate different thermal treatment conditions for the identification of the by-products and potential environmental risk from thermal recycling of PCBs. The Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and a column test were used to study the leaching characteristics of lead from waste CRT glass, which is one of the most important environmental concerns arising from the disposal of e-waste. The results indicate that more attention should be paid to the benzene series when recycling PCBs under thermal conditions, especially for workers without any personal protection equipment. The impact of immersion on the leaching of lead from CRT leaded glass was more effective than the impact of washing only by acid rain. Abstract: With the development of the science, technology and economy, electronic products became the important necessary products in daily life. Due to the large usage of electronic products, generation of the e-waste became more and more. The e-waste treatment was generally as a troublesome task. The life cycle assessment (LCA) method is used to analyze the treatment technology of cathode ray tube (CRT) display. The results show that the environmental impact of incineration of CRT display has the greatest impacts, with comparison to the manual-based dismantling and mechanical recycling. The impact of Carcinogens is the major contributor, which cause a direct impact on human health. The result suggests that the CRT display should be separately treated and not be mixed with municipal solid waste which is treated by incineration. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are commonly added to electronic products for flame-retardation effects, and are attracting more and more attentions due to their potential toxicity, durability and bioaccumulation. This study conducts a sysmtematic review to understand the human exposure to PBDEs from e-waste recycling, especially exploring the exposure pathways and human burden of PBDEs as well as investigating the temporal trend of PBDEs exposure worldwide. The results show that the particular foods (contaminated fish, poultry, meat and breast milk) ingestion, indoor dust ingestion and indoor air inhalation may be key factors leading to human health risks of PBDEs exposure in e-waste recycling regions. Residents and some vulnerable groups (occupational workers and children) in e-waste recycling areas may face higher exposure levels and health risks. PBDE exposure is closely related to exposure level, exposure duration, e-waste recycling methods, and dietary customs. High levels of PBDEs are found in human tissues (breast milk, hair, blood (serum), placenta and other tissues) in e-waste areas, at far higher levels than in other areas. Existing data indicate that PBDE exposure levels do not present any apparent downward trend, and will possibly cause serious human diseases. E-waste has attracted global concern owing to huge generation amount, rich valuable metal content, and potential environmental risk. The evaluation of the recycling potential is becoming more and more important, especially for many recyclers when they are hesitating which substance is more worthwhile to recover. In this research, a simplified method is set up to calculate the recycling potential of many metals in e-waste, and considers four respects, including existence condition, substance toxicity, economic condition and technical condition. A study case based on the liquid crystal display (LCD) is presented as an example to assess the recycling potential of substances contained. The recycling potential of the contained metals was measured according to those four aspects. As a result, the priority level of these substances recycled from waste LCDs is aluminum (Al) > mercury (Hg) > indium (In) > tin (Sn) > zinc (Zn), and the technological level would be an important factor that affect the recycling potential value of Hg. The toxicity and the price are two key issues that affect the recycling potential of Sn compared with Zn. The proliferation of toxic electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) have become problematic, especially for small countries or cities with extremely high population densities. Environmental pollution and resource discarding have been widely recognized in case of temporary stock, simple dismantling, landfill or transboundary transportation of this waste. To address these e-waste problem subjected to environmental conservation and resource recycling, we designed an integrated mobile recycling plant, operating with combined processes of dismantling, crushing, and multi-level separation. Two large standardized and movable containers were equipped for whole-unit dismantling as well as waste monitors and printed wiring board recycling. A sophisticated demonstration indicates that valuable resources, including metals, plastic and glass, could be fully separated for further recycling. Meanwhile, we evaluated the environmental performance from the perspectives of gaseous emissions, waste water, and noise pollution, and found that these emissions could completely meet the requirements of environmental protection and human health. Abstract: Electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) has become one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world, and many countries have established e-waste treatment enterprises to solve their e-waste problems. Because of the potential environmental pollution from e-waste, evaluating the overall sustainability of e-waste enterprises is critical to both nations and cities, although a great challenge academically. In this study, a combined approach of emergy analysis and life cycle assessment (LCA) was undertaken, to quantitatively investigate the effectiveness of an e-waste treatment trial project in Macau. In the emergy analysis, we also introduced two new indices (emergy recovery and technical efficiency) in order to evaluate the technical level of e-waste treatment in Macau. The research results show that the trial project has low competitive ability, due to high input emergy and low economic benefits. The emergy environmental efficiency analysis and LCA analysis together indicated that the trial project will indeed produce a low impact on the local environment, and because of the recovery of some resources in the e-waste treatment process, can even generate some environmental benefits. The analysis on the emergy recovery efficiency and technical efficiency shows that trial project has a relatively higher emergy recovery rate (52.78%) and technical level (72.36%) than the e-waste treatment enterprises in mainland China. However, based on both the emergy sustainability index (ESI) and the emergy–LCA sustainability index, it was found that the e-waste treatment trial project is not sustainable over the long term, due to low economic efficiency. Compared to ESI, the emergy–LCA sustainability index is more intuitive and easier to understand. Relevant results and data from this study could provide decision support to enterprise managers and government sectors, so that they could implement appropriate policies on e-waste treatment, to promote sustainable development and improved e-waste processing technologies. Large quantities of e-waste are presently being generated in Macau, but since recycling facilities and laws on e-waste still need to be developed, most e-waste cannot currently be properly treated. Moreover, little is known about residents'' behaviors, attitudes, and their willingness to pay (WTP) for recycling e-waste. These issues are discussed in this study, based on a questionnaire survey on household electronic product usage. In 2010, “Life span completed” was the primary reason respondents abandoned their electronic products, accounting for about 37.97% of responses; the main disposal methods of e-waste in Macau were “Retailers retrieve from consumer” and “Sale to a recycling corporation.” While having little understanding of e-waste disposal issues, most residents were still willing to hand their e-waste into the government for centralized collection. In addition, the respondents gave “telephone reservation” as their preferred collection method. Finally, the residents'' WTP in Macau was estimated by the logistic regression method. It was found that education level, age and household income were the significant factors affecting residents'' WTP. The monthly mean WTP was 20.03MOP (2.50 US dollar) per household, and the annual WTP was approximately 40,185,067 MOP (5,023,133 US dollar) for all of Macau. Abstract: The e-waste issue is drawing increasing attention in China as a result of the country''s rapid course of industrialization and modernization. The potential environmental pollution from e-waste makes evaluating the overall eco-efficiency of e-waste treatment enterprises a critical need for environmental sound management of e-waste, and a great challenge academically. The emergy analysis method can link economic and ecological systems together, highlighting the internal relationships among the different subsystems and components. Therefore, this method was used in this study to evaluate the sustainability of an e-waste treatment enterprise. Considering the characteristics of the e-waste treatment process, the traditional emergy indices were improved, and two new emergy indices were put forward to analyze the emergy recovery rate and technical level of the e-waste treatment enterprise. The research results show that the e-waste treatment enterprise can generate large economic benefits, and its environmental impact can be relatively moderate; however, the e-waste treatment enterprise had a relatively low emergy recovery rate and technical level in 2010. Finally, the emergy sustainability index (ESI) indicated that the e-waste treatment enterprise could have a sustainable contribution to both the economy and the environment for moderate periods into the future. The study will provide some useful decisions support to the enterprise managers, so that they may make appropriate policies toward sustainable development or maturation of their enterprise. This comparative research represents an example for a better conservation of resources by reducing the amount of waste (kg) and providing it more value under the umbrella of remanufacturing. The three discussed cases will expose three issues already addressed separately in the literature. The generation of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) interacts with the environmental depletion. In this article, we gave the examples of addressed issues under the concept of remanufacturing. Online collection opportunity eliminating classical collection, a business to business (B2B) implementation for remanufactured servers and medical devices. The material reuse (recycling), component sustainability, reuse (part harvesting), product reuse (after repair/remanufacturing) indicates the recovery potential using remanufacturing tool for a better conservation of resources adding more value to the products. Our findings can provide an overview of new system organization for the general collection, market potential and the technological advantages using remanufacturing instead of recycling of WEEE or used electrical and electronic equipment. Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE or e-waste) is regarded as one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world and is becoming an emerging issue owing to adverse consequences on the natural environment and the human health. This research article reveals the presence of a strong linear correlation among global e-waste generation and Gross Domestic Product. The obtained results indicate that the best fit for data can be reached by comparing e-waste collected volumes and GDP PPS. More in detail, an increase of 1000 GDP PPS means an additional 0.27 kg of e-waste collected and 0.22 kg of e-waste reused/recycled. Furthermore, for each additional citizen, there will be an increase of 7.7 kg of e-waste collected and 6.2 kg of e-waste reused/recycled. The better collection of e-waste acts an important role concerning the circular economy, and it can be an advantageous approach. Therefore, e-waste could be considered as an opportunity for recycling or recovery of valuable metals (e.g., copper, gold, silver, and palladium), given their significant content in precious metals than in mineral ores. Many studies show that high levels of many toxic metals and persistent and bio-accumulative chemicals have been found in electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling sites and their surrounding environmental media. Both flame-retardant plastic housing materials and printed circuit boards (PCBs) could be the major contributors. However, relatively little work has focused on the use or content of toxic substances and their changing in scrap housing materials and PCBs from home appliances. This study evaluated the existence of brominated flame retardants (BFRs, including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and Tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA)) in housing plastics and PCBs from home appliances collected from various e-waste recyclers in China. These were then analyzed for the potential migration of BFRs from the e-waste components into their recycled products. The results show that both PBDEs and TBBPA were found with high level in most of e-waste samples, indicating that the widespread use of BFRs in home appliances are entering into the end-of-life stage. For the plastics samples, CRT TVs and LCD monitors should be given priority for the control of BFRs. Regarding PBDEs, the dominant congeners of BDE-209 in the plastics samples contributed 90.72–93.54% to the total concentrations of PBDEs, yet there are large variations for PCBs samples: BDE-28, -47, -99, and -153 were also important congeners compositions, except for BDE-209. Compared with previous studies, the BFRs concentrations in current Chinese e-waste are trending to decline. This study also found that BFRs in housing plastics and PCBs will be transferred into the recycled products with other purpose use, and the new products could have highly enriched capacities for BFRs. The obtained results could be helpful to manage e-waste and their components properly in order to minimize associated environmental and health risks of BFRs, particularly for their further reuse. The derived waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE, or e-waste) has become a global issue in the areas of environmental pollution, resource recycling, and sustainable industry. China is not only the largest producer and consumer of EEE, but also the country seriously polluted from illegal e-waste importation and informal recycling. In the past decade, China demonstrated a whole process of e-waste adventure: from serious pollution in the start to regulation controlling in the present. Here, we specifically examine the past adventure of e-waste management related to legislation system, and seek to outline the lessons and gaps. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE or e-waste) has become a global problem, due to its potential environmental pollution and human health risk, and its containing valuable resources (e.g., metals, plastics). Recycling for e-waste will be a necessity, not only to address the shortage of mineral resources for electronics industry, but also to decline environmental pollution and human health risk. To systematically solve the e-waste problem, more attention of e-waste management should transfer from macroscopic to microscopic scales. E-waste processing technology should be significantly improved to diminish and even avoid toxic substance entering into downstream of material. The regulation or policy related to new production of hazardous substances in recycled materials should also be carried out on the agenda. Non-metallic fractions (NMFs), which make up almost three fourths (by weight) of waste printed circuit boards, have become a matter of great concern for e-waste recyclers, because most of them contain hazardous substances with low utilization value. This study used an advanced Sales Obsolescence Model approach to quantify the generation and flows of non-metallic fractions in China, and to examine the potential environmental impacts associated with both the fractions themselves, and their end-of-life processing activities: disposal into landfills or incineration, and recycling via physical or chemical methods. The results show that approximately 201,000 tons (one time standard deviation: 67,000) of scrap non-metallic fractions were expected to be generated in 2015, and that this amount could increase to 279,000 tons by 2020. Both our own analysis and a systematic review of existing studies on the hazardous characterization of printed circuit boards waste, non-metallic fractions, and their recycling and disposal activities, indicate the threat of environmental pollution, from heavy metals, brominated flame retardants and secondary persistent organic pollutants, particularly dioxins. Since Stockholm Convention listed polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) as persistent organic pollutants and banned their addition, alternative halogen flame retardants (AHFRs) have been substituted for PBDEs. This study systematically investigates the change trends of PBDEs and AHFRs from typical e-waste plastics and dust, as well as clarifying human exposure risks of PBDEs in formal and informal e-waste recycling enterprises, repair store and residential building. The results show that the PBDEs levels in five typical types of e-waste vary in the range of 1.08 × 10−3-30.8 μg/g, meeting the requirements of RoHS regulation. Compared with the residential buildings (1.49–1.68 μg/g), PBDEs in the dust from the formal and informal e-waste recycling enterprises are much higher, ranging from 4.70 to 536 μg/g. BDE-209 is the main congener in most e-waste plastic and dust samples. Meanwhile, AHFRs have become the important composition (3.5–61.5%) in e-waste plastics, while its contribution is lower in dust, implying the higher enrichment efficiency of PBDEs. For PBDEs exposure, the dust intake risk of PBDEs is much higher than skin contact for the workers, and the highest hazard quotient (HQ) value (1.40 × 10−1) and cancer risk (CR) value (1.21 × 10−7) both imply safe exposure levels. • POP-BFRs are transferred from e-waste to consumer products, via recycling. • Around 77% of PBDEs and 39% of HBCD were found flowing into recycled materials. • A non-negligible amount of PBDEs was estimated in recycling streams in China. • The results could be helpful for POP-BFRs management and control. Due to the rapid increase of e-waste plastics and the national policy's strong preference for mechanical recycling, a substantial amount of POP-BFRs is flowing into recycling streams in China. Therefore, confronting with the worldwide prohibition in manufacturing and consumption, identifying the transfer and inventory of POP-BFRs in recycling stage has become the key to their effective management and elimination. In this study, the level of PBDEs in e-waste housings, recycled plastics and daily-use products from recycling facilities and the commodity market was determined, and a gradual decrease of PBDEs was observed along with the downstream life cycle, indicating that recycling is a crucial medium of POP-BFRs transferred from their original use to an expansive reutilization market. Based on that, an extrusion experiment was conducted to imitate the mechanical recycling of e-waste plastics. It was found that, about 77% of PBDEs and 39% of HBCD were retained in recycled materials, with levels comparable to those in the products from recycling manufacturers and the consumer market. Mechanical recycling had no effect on the predominance of highly brominated BDE congeners, and no obvious transformation from higher to lower brominated diphenyl ethers was observed in recycled materials under thermal conditions; however, the isomerization of γ-HBCD brought about a noticeable increase in the relative abundance of α-HBCD. According to a Monte Carlo method estimation by using the transfer rate, approximately 235–687.8 tons of PBDEs have entered into recycling streams annually in the most recent five years. The field survey, laboratory findings and model evaluation results obtained in this study would not only contribute to a broader understanding of POP-BFRs sources and impact scopes posed on human health and the environment, but also provide a basis for developing effective strategies to manage POP-BFRs from the recycling perspective.
