Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH)-detecting electrochemical sensors are attractive in monitoring and diagnosing various physiological disorders of NADH abnormalities. The NADH detection methods using conventional electrodes are challenging due to slow electron transfer and fouling effect. Interestingly, paper-based flexible and disposable electrodes (PE) are superior for sensing biomolecules through simple detection procedures with excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, to construct a conducting polypeptide-modified paper electrode, initially, polytyrosine (PTyr) is synthesized from l-tyrosine N-carboxy anhydride through ring-opening polymerization, and PTyr is drop-coated on the PE. The PTyr-modified paper electrode (PMPE) demonstrated excellent electrochemical properties and facilitated the electrooxidation of NADH at a lower potential of 576 mV. The PMPE displayed a linear detection between 25 and 145 μM of NADH concentration, with a lower detection limit of 0.340 μM. Under ideal circumstances, the sensor developed displayed an excellent NADH detection capability without interference with the most common electroactive species, ascorbic acid. The PMPE facilitates good electrocatalytic activity toward NADH, which can also be employed as a substrate material for biofuel cells.

Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) is commonly released from plastics in aqueous environment, which can disrupt endocrine system and cause adverse effects on public health. There is a pressing need to highly sensitive detect DEHP. Herein, a near-infrared (NIR) light-driven lab-on-paper cathodic photoelectrochemical aptasensing platform integrated with AgInS 2 /Cu 2 O/FeOOH photocathode and "Y"-like ternary conjugated DNA nanostructure-mediated "ON-OFF" catalytic switching of hemin monomer-to-dimer was established for ultrasensitive DEHP detection. Profiting from the collaborative roles of the effective photosensitization of NIR-response AgInS 2 and the fast hole extraction of FeOOH, the NIR light-activated AgInS 2 /Cu 2 O/FeOOH photocathode generated a markedly enhanced photocathodic signal. The dual hemin-labelled "Y"-like ternary conjugated DNA nanostructures made the hemin monomers separated in space and they maintained highly active to catalyze in situ generation of electron acceptors (O 2 ). The hemin monomers were relocated in close proximity with the help of target-induced allosteric change of DNA nanostructures, which could spontaneously dimerize into catalytically inactive hemin dimers and fail to mediate electron acceptors generation, resulting in a decreased photocathodic signal. Therefore, the ultrasensitive DEHP detection was realized with a linear response range of 1 pM-500 nM and a detection limit of 0.39 pM. Many studies have been conducted on measuring avian influenza viruses and their hemagglutinin (HA) antigens via electrochemical principles; most of these studies have used gold electrodes on ceramic, glass, or silicon substrates, and/or labeling for signal enhancement. Herein, we present a paper-based immunosensor for label-free measurement of multiple avian influenza virus (H5N1, H7N9, and H9N2) antigens using flexible screen-printed carbon nanotube-polydimethylsiloxane electrodes. These flexible electrodes on a paper substrate can complement the physical weakness of the paper-based sensors when wetted, without affecting flexibility. The relative standard deviation of the peak currents was 1.88% when the electrodes were repeatedly bent and unfolded twenty times with deionized water provided each cycle, showing the stability of the electrodes. For the detection of HA antigens, approximately 10-μl samples (concentration: 100 pg/ml-100 ng/ml) were needed to form the antigen-antibody complexes during 20-30 min incubation, and the immune responses were measured via differential pulse voltammetry. The limits of detections were 55.7 pg/ml (0.95 pM) for H5N1 HA, 99.6 pg/ml (1.69 pM) for H7N9 HA, and 54.0 pg/ml (0.72 pM) for H9N2 HA antigens in phosphate buffered saline, and the sensors showed good selectivity and reproducibility. In this work, a self-circulation oxygen-hydrogen peroxide-oxygen (O 2 -H 2 O 2 -O 2 ) system with photogenerated electrons as fuel and highly active hemin monomers as operators was engineered for ultrasensitive cathode photoelectrochemical bioassay of microRNA-141 (miRNA-141) using a stacked sealed paper device. During the circulation, the photogenerated electrons from BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O photosensitive structures assembled on a reduced graphene oxide paper electrode first reduced the electron acceptors (dissolved O 2 ) to H 2 O 2 , which was then catalytically decomposed by hemin monomers to generate O 2 again. The regenerated O 2 continued to be reduced, which made O 2 and H 2 O 2 stuck in the infinite loop of O 2 -H 2 O 2 -O 2 accompanied by the fast consumption of photogenerated electrons, generating an amplified photocurrent signal. When a target existed, a duplex-specific nuclease-induced target recycling reaction with dual trigger DNA probes as the output was performed to initiate the assembly of bridge-like DNA nanostructures, which endowed the self-circulation system with dual destruction functions as follows. (i) Reduced fuel supply: the assembled DNA bridges acting as a negatively charged barrier prevented the photogenerated electrons from participating in the O 2 reduction to H 2 O 2 . (ii) Incapacitation of operators: DNA bridging induced the dimerization of hemin monomers linked on the DNA hairpins to catalytically inactive hemin dimers, leading to the abortive regeneration of O 2 . These destruction functions resulted in the circulation interruption and a remarkably decreased photocurrent signal. Thus, the developed cathode photoelectrochemical biosensing platform achieved ultrasensitive miRNA-141 detection with a linear range of 0.25 fM to 1 nM and a detection limit of 83 aM, and it also exhibited high accuracy, selectivity, and practicability.

Screen-printed technology has helped considerably to the development of portable electrochemical sensors since it provides miniaturized but robust and user-friendly electrodes. Moreover, this technology allows to obtain very versatile transducers, not only regarding their design, but also their ease of modification. Therefore, in the last decades, the use of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) has exponentially increased, with ceramic as the main substrate. However, with the growing interest in the use of cheap and widely available materials as the basis of analytical devices, paper or other low-cost flat materials have become common substrates for SPEs. Thus, in this revision, a comprehensive overview on paper-based SPEs used for analytical proposes is provided. A great variety of designs is reported, together with several examples to illustrate the main applications.

The need for agile and proper identification of drugs of abuse has encouraged the scientific community to improve and to develop new methodologies. The drug lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is still widely used due to its hallucinogenic effects. The use of voltammetric methods to analyze narcotics has increased in recent years, and the possibility of miniaturizing the electrochemical equipment allows these methods to be applied outside the laboratory; for example, in crime scenes. In addition to portability, the search for affordable and sustainable materials for use in electroanalytical research has grown in recent decades. In this context, employing paper substrate, graphite pencil, and silver paint to construct paper-based electrodes is a great alternative. Here, a paper-based device comprising three electrodes was drawn on 300 g/m 2 watercolor paper with 8B pencils, and its efficiency was compared to the efficiency of a commercially available screen-printed carbon electrode. Square wave voltammetry was used for LSD analysis in aqueous medium containing 0.05 mol/L LiClO 4 . The limits of detection and quantification were 0.38 and 1.27 μmol/L, respectively. Both electrodes exhibited a similar voltammetric response, which was also confirmed during analysis of a seized LSD sample, with recovery of less than 10%. The seized samples were previously analyzed by GCMS technique, employing the full scan spectra against the software spectral library. The electrode selectivity was also tested against 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and methamphetamine. The development of actuators for power sources is essential for the efficient manipulation of fluids in microfluidics systems. In this work, a capacitor-type three-layer paper actuator was fabricated by sandwiching a polyelectrolyte layer between two films of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS). The paper actuator exhibited stable large electromechanical deformations in bilateral symmetry under alternating square-wave electric field. The actuation properties were examined in a function of voltage (±0.5, ±1, ±1.5, ±2, and ±2.5 V) and frequency (1, 0.5, 0.2, and 0.05 Hz). In addition, the PEDOT/PSS electrode films with different thicknesses were prepared, and the effects of actuator thickness on actuation properties were examined. As a result, it was found that the actuator displacement increased considerably with reducing actuator thickness. In addition, the actuator with a thickness of 48 μm demonstrated a maximum displacement of 5.8 mm at a voltage of 1.5 V and a frequency of 0.05 Hz. The proposed actuator can be potentially used in the development of power sources for micropumps and check valves of microfluidic devices.

Multiplex ion analyzers have been introduced recently for the assay of several inorganic ions, whilst electrochemists have extensively employed screen printed sensors for pharmaceutical analyses. This work aims to develop a USB pluggable sensor with a user-friendly design for multiplex analysis of oppositely charged co-formulated organic ions. The miniaturized screen-printed electrode was developed using silver ink on paper substrate. A compact sensor design was attained by including three electrodes, a single reference electrode along with an indicator electrode for each of the determined ions. Optimized PVC membranes were drop-casted over each of the indicator electrodes for the determination of phenylephrine HCl (PHE) and ibuprofen (IBU). The proposed multiplex potentiometric sensors exhibit Nernstian slopes of 59.2 ± 0.26 and -56.8 ± 0.16 mV/decade for PHE and IBU, respectively, with respective detection limits of 1.6 × 10 -7 and 6.53 × 10 -8 mol L -1 . The fast and stable response of the developed sensor enabled the real-time monitoring of the combined dosage form dissolution. The dissolution profiles obtained by this potentiometric analyzer and an off-line separation technique were compared favourably, albeit our proposed in-line sensor reduced waste and time of analysis. This paper describes the use of aluminum and zinc as anodic materials for a battery employing nickel (II) oxide (NiO) as cathode. Comparison of both materials resulted in the development of a compact, cost effective, and easy to use primary NiO/Al battery employing an alkaline electrolyte. The system features electrodes composed of powder forms of the active materials on modified paper substrates that are contained in a simple multilayer design utilizing thin laminated plastic materials to provide structure and flexibility to the battery as well as a paper separator. Various concentrations of potassium hydroxide (KOH) electrolyte were examined and maximum performance was observed at 6 M KOH. A maximum current density and power density of 1.94 mA/cm 2 and 1 mW/cm 2 , respectively was achieved. This user-friendly device was able to produce a maximum capacity of 2.33 mAh/g when 2 mA/g was applied. In this work, a triggerable H 2 O 2 -cleavable fluid switch mediated paper-based biochip, being amenable to multiplexing and quantitative analysis with the dual-response output of visual screening and ratiometric electrochemistry, was developed for sensitive detection of target on-site. By properly implanting hydrophobic Ag-H 2 O 2 responsive material in specific zone to form a programmable fluid switch, the biochip could achieve different modes of blocking/connecting switching automatically. In order to improve the test performance, a ratiometric electrochemical signal readout was designed, which was enhanced by a secondary in situ growth method fabricating trepang-shaped Au modified paper working electrode. In virtue of hybridization chain reaction, classic competitive recognition interactions of aptamer and target, and ratiometric internally calibrated mechanisms, ultrasensitive detection of the target was realized. To acquire a more quantitative and straightforward naked eye visual screening, the hydrophobic Ag switch was triggered by stimulating instructions from H 2 O 2 , thus reconnecting the electrochemical and ratiometric units automatically and resulting in a "signal on" visual fluidic flow on the chemometer characterized by the accurate distance of color development as a detection motif. With MCF-7 and K562 cells as models, wider linear detection ranges from 150 to 1.0 × 10 7 and 220 to 7.0 × 10 6 cells mL -1 for MCF-7 and K562 cells, respectively, were achieved. Meanwhile, thanks to the paper fluid chemometer, an acceptable screening detection limit of 10 3 cells mL -1 was obtained in the quantitative colorimetric assays. The proposed paper-based biochips opened up new horizons for designing of integratable, easy-to-use, and precise point-of-care testing devices.

A novel paper electrode-based flexible pressure sensor modified with multiwalled carbon nanotubes was designed for point-of-care (POC) immunoassay of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) with digital multimeter readout. The portable POC testing device consisted of flexible pressure sensor equipped with a paper electrode and connected through syringe tubing to a single-break microplate. The immunoreaction was initially carried out on the microplate with a sandwich-type assay format using platinum nanozyme-labeled secondary antibody for the gas generation. Upon addition of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), platinum nanozyme (catalase-like mimic) reduced it into hydrogen oxide and oxygen (O 2 ). The overflowing oxygen gas increased the pressure of the multiwalled carbon nanotube-functionalized paper electrode in a homemade pressure-tight system, and the increased pressure could be readily monitored using the paper electrode-based flexible pressure-tight sensor with a digital multimeter readout. The detectable signal mainly derived from the resistance change of pressure sensor because of its deformation with the assistance of the as-generated gas, and the shift in the resistance could be allowed to detect the gas pressure even as low as 80 Pa. Under optimum conditions, pressure sensor-based immunoassay exhibited good resistance responses toward target CEA within a linear range of 0.5-60 ng/mL at a detection limit of 167 pg/mL. Moreover, our strategy provided acceptable reproducibility, precision, high specificity, and good accordance with the commercial CEA ELISA kit for detecting human serum specimens.

Paper-based microfluidic devices with screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) for electrochemical sensing are popular for low-cost point-of-care diagnostics. The electroactive sensing area in these devices is always the irregular, bottom-SPE surface which is in contact with the analyte flowing within the paper substrate. Unfortunately, this results in an electroactive area which varies widely from sensor to sensor. In this paper, we present a three-dimensional paper-based analytical device with a hollow 3D fluid reservoir which allows for use of a more uniform top-SPE surface as the electroactive sensing area. The use of this isolated reservoir eliminates the need for dielectric inks used in conventional SPEs on paper. Our sensors are fabricated using a combination of wax-printing, screen-printing and simple folding via a cleanroom free process without the need for expensive equipment. Additionally, for the first time, we demonstrate an electrochemical paper-based analytical device with a custom designed potentiostat integrated circuit (IC) as a miniaturized reader. The versatility of the sensor is demonstrated through voltammetric, amperometric and potentiometric measurements of important biochemical analytes such as dopamine, glucose and pH. The 3D ePAD together with a custom CMOS potentiostat demonstrates a low-cost, versatile, self-contained system suitable for point-of-care diagnostic devices.

Rapid and sensitive point-of-care diagnostics are of paramount importance for early detection of infectious diseases and timely initiation of treatment. Here, we present cellulose paper and flexible plastic chips with printed graphene-modified silver electrodes as universal point-of-care diagnostic tools for the rapid and sensitive detection of microbial pathogens or nucleic acids through utilizing electrical sensing modality and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). We evaluated the ability of the developed paper-based assay to detect (i) viruses on cellulose-based paper microchips without implementing amplification in samples with viral loads between 10 6 and 10 8 copies per ml, and (ii) amplified HIV-1 nucleic acids in samples with viral loads between 10 fg μl -1 and 10 8 fg μl -1 . The target HIV-1 nucleic acid was amplified using the RT-LAMP technique and detected through the electrical sensing of LAMP amplicons for a broad range of RNA concentrations between 10 fg μl -1 and 10 8 fg μl -1 after 40 min of amplification time. Our assay may be used for antiretroviral therapy monitoring where it meets the sensitivity requirement of the World Health Organization guidelines. Such a paper microchip assay without the amplification step may also be considered as a simple and inexpensive approach for acute HIV detection where maximum viral replication occurs.

A simple, low-cost, and sensitive electrochemical lab-on-paper assay is developed based on a novel gold nanoparticle modified porous paper working electrode for use in point-of-care testing (POCT). Electrochemical methods are introduced for lab-on-paper based on screen-printed paper electrodes. To further improve specificity, performance, and sensitivity for point-of-care testing, a novel porous Au-paper working electrode (Au-PWE) is designed for lab-on-paper using growth of an interconnected Au nanoparticle (NP) layer on the surface of cellulose fibers in order to enhance the conductivity of the paper sample zone and immobilize the primary antibodies (Ab1). With a sandwich-type immunoassay format, Pd-Au bimetallic nanoparticles possessing peroxidase-like activity are used as a matrix to immobilize secondary antibodies (Ab2) for rapid detection of targets. This lab-on-paper based immunodevice is applied to the diagnosis of a cancer biomarker in clinical serum samples.

The increasing demands for portable, wearable, and implantable sensing devices have stimulated growing interest in innovative electrode materials. In this work, we have demonstrated that printing a conductive ink formulated by blending three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene-carbon nanotube (CNT) assembly with ionic liquid (IL) on two-dimensional (2D) graphene paper (GP), leads to a freestanding GP supported graphene-CNT-IL nanocomposite (graphene-CNT-IL/GP). The incorporation of highly conductive CNTs into graphene assembly effectively increases its surface area and improves its electrical and mechanical properties. The graphene-CNT-IL/GP, as freestanding and flexible substrates, allows for efficient loading of PtAu alloy nanoparticles by means of ultrasonic-electrochemical deposition. Owing to the synergistic effect of PtAu alloy nanoparticles, 3D porous graphene-CNT scaffold, IL binder and 2D flexible GP substrate, the resultant lightweight nanohybrid paper electrode exhibits excellent sensing performances in nonenzymatic electrochemical detection of glucose in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility and mechanical properties., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. The integration of paper with an electrochemical device has attracted growing attention for point-of-care testing, where it is of great importance to fabricate electrodes on paper in a low-cost, easy and versatile way. In this work, we report a simple strategy for directly writing electrodes on paper using a pressure-assisted ball pen to form a paper-based electrochemical device (PED). This method is demonstrated to be capable of fabricating electrodes on paper with good electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance, holding great potential to be employed in point-of-care applications, such as in human health diagnostics and food safety detection. As examples, the PEDs fabricated using the developed method are applied for detection of glucose in artificial urine and melamine in sample solutions. Furthermore, our developed strategy is also extended to fabricate PEDs with multi-electrode arrays and write electrodes on non-planar surfaces (e.g., paper cup, human skin), indicating the potential application of our method in other fields, such as fabricating biosensors, paper electronics etc.

Carbon nanofibers are an emerging smart material that are promising for use as a biosensor and a biofuel cell transducer material due to their morphological and electrochemical characteristics. In particular, graphitized carbon nanofibers possess unique structures of graphite-like edges within their high surface area that provide a large active site for enzyme attachment. For a specific application such as a biofuel cell, which requires highly stable electrical communication and electricity generation, non-covalent enzyme immobilization using bifunctional molecule is suggested as an appropriate approach because it does not change the carbon hybridization from sp2 to sp3 as covalent immobilization by acid treatment does. Graphitized carbon-nanofiber paper (GCNFp) electrode were fabricated through dispersion-filtration method in which glucose oxidase as model enzyme were immobilized by a bifunctional molecule that forms π-π stacking of the pyrene moiety with the nanofiber wall coupled by a reactive end-amine reaction. This system provides a practical enzyme-electrode hybrid that facilitates comparatively faster enzyme-electrode electrical communication than other system using similar material, as calculated from the heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constant (K(s)) which was 5.45 s(-1).

A novel device combining electrochemical and colorimetric detection is developed for the rapid measurement of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a DNA oxidative damage biomarker. The device takes advantage of the speed and low cost of the conventional strip test as well as the high reliability and accuracy of the electrochemical assay. Competitive immunoreactions were performed on the lateral flow strip, and the captured 8-OHdG on the control line was determined by chronoamperometric measurement with carbon nanotube paper as the working electrode. At the same time, the color intensity of the test line was measured by a scanner and analyzed by the ImageJ software. The device was able to detect 8-OHdG concentrations in PBS as low as 2.07 ng mL(-1) by the colorimetric method and 3.11 ng mL(-1) by the electrochemical method. Furthermore, the device was successfully utilized to detect 8-OHdG in urine with a detection limit of 5.76 ng mL(-1) (colorimetric method) and 8.85 ng mL(-1) (electrochemical method), respectively. In conclusion, the integrated device with dual detection methods can provide a rapid, visual, quantitative and feasible detection method for 8-OHdG. The integration of these two methods holds two major advantages over tests based on a single method. Firstly, it can provide double confidence on the same assay. Secondly, by involving two methods that differ in principle, the integration could potentially avoid false results coming from one method. In addition, these methods do not require expensive equipment or trained personnel, making it suitable for use as a simple, economical, portable field kit for on-site monitoring of 8-OHdG in a variety of clinical settings.

In this study, two different supramolecular recognition architectures for impedimetric detection of DNA hybridization have been formed on disposable paper-supported inkjet-printed gold electrodes. The gold electrodes were fabricated using a gold nanoparticle based ink. The first recognition architecture consists of subsequent layers of biotinylated self-assembly monolayer (SAM), streptavidin and biotinylated DNA probe. The other recognition architecture is constructed by immobilization of thiol-functionalized DNA probe (HS-DNA) and subsequent backfill with 11-mercapto-1-undecanol (MUOH) SAM. The binding capacity and selectivity of the recognition architectures were examined by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) measurements. SPR results showed that the HS-DNA/MUOH system had a higher binding capacity for the complementary DNA target. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements showed that the hybridization can be detected with impedimetric spectroscopy in picomol range for both systems. EIS signal indicated a good selectivity for both recognition architectures, whereas SPR showed very high unspecific binding for the HS-DNA/MUOH system. The factors affecting the impedance signal were interpreted in terms of the complexity of the supramolecular architecture. The more complex architecture acts as a less ideal capacitive sensor and the impedance signal is dominated by the resistive elements.

We have reported the fabrication of flexible graphene-paper electrode (GPE) with a flat surface, whose internal structure has been formed with gradient porous build-up (from the surface to the 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose (HC)-coated paper). HC solution was used as a binder to form the gradient porous graphene layer, enabling it to create an anchoring force between the porous graphene layer and the filter paper. The morphology of GPE was investigated using a scanning electron microscope, and the surface resistance of the GPE as a function of graphene content was determined using four-probe method. The electrochemical performance of the GPE was evaluated using a three-electrode test cell by cyclic voltammetry. The gravimetric capacitance of GPE was found to be 120 F per gram of graphene, and the capacitance retention was within ca. 96% for over 500 cycles. This could be attributed to both the low surface resistance resulting from the flat surface and the high electrochemical activity caused by the gradient porous structure. This unique structure not only offers an enhanced conductivity and good electrical contact between the electrode and electrolyte but also helps GPE to maintain good cyclic stability, proving its potential for use in various rechargeable and portable energy-storage devices.

Background: Cheap, reliable, point-of-care diagnostics is a necessity for the growing and aging population of the world. Paper substrate and printing method, combined together, are the cheapest possible method for generating high-volume diagnostic sensor platforms. Electrical transduction tools also minimize the cost and enhance the simplicity of the devices., Methods: Standard surface characterization techniques, namely contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze the growth of the organic thiol layers on top of the printed metal electrodes on paper substrates. The results were compared with those obtained by impedimetric electrical characterization method., Results: This article reports the fabrication and characterization of printed metal electrodes and their functionalization by organic layers on paper and plastic substrates for biosensing and diagnostic applications. Flexible and highly conductive single-walled carbon nanotube/polycellulose papers (SWCNT/PPs) were developed as current collectors for lithium-ion batteries by a simple and scalable process. The flexible electrodes based on SWCNT/PP conductors consisted of a unique three-dimensional interwoven structure of electrode materials and cellulose fibers with CNTs and exhibited flexibility, good electrochemical performance and excellent cyclic stability. Full cells using Li(4)Ti(5)O(12) and LiFePO(4) electrodes based on SWCNT/PPs showed a first discharge capacity of 153.5 mA h g(-1) with Coulombic efficiencies of 90.6% at 0.1 C and discharge capacity of 102.6 mA h g(-1) at high rate (10 C). Full cells based SWCNT/PP conductors showed higher capacities and lower electrochemical interfacial resistance compared to metallic current collectors. Half cells using anatase TiO(2) hierarchical spheres based on SWCNT/PP conductors also exhibited outstanding electrochemical performance, verifying the stability of SWCNT/PP conductors to various electrode materials. Our results demonstrated the potential versatility of composite electrodes and conductive SWCNT/PPs for flexible and portable micropower devices.

The development of flexible electrodes is of considerable current interest because of the increasing demand for modern electronics, portable medical products, and compact energy devices. We report a modular approach to fabricating high-performance flexible electrodes by structurally integrating 2D-assemblies of nanoparticles with freestanding graphene paper. We have shown that the 2D array of gold nanoparticles at oil-water interfaces can be transferred on freestanding graphene oxide paper, leading to a monolayer of densely packed gold nanoparticles of uniform sizes loaded on graphene oxide paper. One major finding is that the postassembly electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide paper restores the ordered structure and electron-transport properties of graphene, and gives rise to robust and biocompatible freestanding electrodes with outstanding electrocatalytic activities, which have been manifested by the sensitive and selective detection of two model analytes: glucose and hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) secreted by live cells. This paper presents a hybrid wearable bio-sensing system, which combines traditional small-area low-power and high-performance System-on-Chip (SoC), flexible paper substrate and cost-effective Printed Electronics. Differential bio-signals are measured, digitized, stored and transmitted by the SoC. The total area of the chip is 1.5 × 3.0 mm(2). This enables the miniaturization of the wearable system. The electrodes and interconnects are inkjet printed on paper substrate and the performance is verified in in-vivo tests. The quality of electrocardiogram signal sensed by printed electrodes is comparable with commercial electrodes, with noise level slightly increased. The paper-based inkjet printed system is flexible, light and thin, which makes the final system comfortable for end-users. The hybrid bio-sensing system offers a potential solution to the next generation wearable healthcare technology.

Gold is among the highly conductive and stable materials, which are ideal anodes for microbial fuel cells (MFCs). However, previous studies have shown that bare gold surface is recalcitrant for the colonization of some exoelectrogens, e.g., Shewanella putrefacians. In this work, the problem regarding the poor bio-compatibility of gold as an anode material was sorted out through coupling it with carbon paper. A new composite anode material was fabricated through sputtering gold layer homogeneously on carbon paper matrix. Results of cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in Fe(CN)6(3-/4-) solution demonstrated better electrochemical performance of the carbon paper-gold (C-Au) composite than either carbon paper or bare gold, when they were used in MFCs. With Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 as the inoculum, the C-Au anode-based MFC produced total electric charges higher than the carbon-paper-anode-based MFC by 47%. The cyclic voltammetry analysis and the scanning electron microscopy observation showed that the MR-1 biofilm growth was accelerated when the carbon paper surface was sputtered with gold. The content of a bacterial consortium found on an electron beam (e-beam) Pt-deposited electrode in a mediator-less microbial fuel cell (MFC) using glucose and glutamate as fuel is reported in this paper. The e-beam Pt-deposited electrode and electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) consortium were developed to improve the mediator-less MFC performance. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), and 16S rRNA sequencing were used to identify the EAB consortia. Sequencing results showed that clone ASP-31 was predominant and was similar to Aeromonas hydrophila, an Fe(III)-reducing and EAB. The phylogenetic tree analysis disclosed the presence of gamma-proteobacteria groups such as Aeromonas genus, Enterobacter asburiae, and Klebsiella oxytoca. These results suggest that MFC performance of the e-beam Pt-deposited electrode with Aeromonas genus consortia dominated by A. hydrophila was higher than other MFCs within a short period. With the e-beam Pt-deposited electrode and Aeromonas genus consortia in the mediator-less MFC, it is possible to increase the efficiency of electron transfer between the bacteria and the electrode.

The fabrication of the Screen‐Printed Electrode (SPE) was performed using the graphite ink to print the working (WE) and counter electrodes (CE), and silver/silver chloride path as reference electrode (RE). All the electrodes are printed in a paper substrate using screen‐printing technique. The resulting SPE is characterized using scanning electron microscopy, showing all the ink layer, and subsequently optimized. The paper sample presented the cellulose fibers entanglement, extremely rough, with highly porous network. Then the graphite ink was deposited and the surface became flat, thinner and very smooth. When the silver ink was painted on top of the graphite ink, the spherical silver particles, ranged from 2–3.5 μm in size, were observed. And finally, the silver ink was covered with a AgCl layer and the particle size becomes larger with an irregular sphere‐like phase. The images showed that the layers appear to be homogeneously distributed with good coverage. Then fabrication process was optimized concerning type of paper, the sanding process, the hydrophobic barrier, the electrode design and size. In summary, the optimized values included using the previously sanded matte paper with a mineral spirit layer. The design and size of the electrode were also tested to achieve the best electrochemical performance (design 3 with 3.5 cm). The final SPE was a miniaturized and flexible paper‐based electrochemical electrode. In order to evaluate the electrical properties, the ohmic resistance of each ink was tested using a multimeter and the obtained values were 2.18 kΩ for the graphite ink, 2.27 Ω for the silver ink and 38.33 kΩ for the silver/silver chloride ink. That can indicate the good conductivity of each ink used in the fabrication of the electrode and the correct deposition of Ag/AgCl. Finally, the electrode was used to measure the electrochemical response of K4[Fe(CN)6] in different concentrations. Then a calibration curve was obtained from the voltammograms and a linearity was observed between the current and concentration in the range of 0.50–2.00 mM. Electrocoagulation and chemical coagulation are treatment methods based on the same removal mechanism.In this study, it was investigated the effectiveness of coagulation methods using Al electrodes and Al2(SO4)3.18H2O on the wastewaters from cardboard production.In the electrocoagulation experiments, the optimum current and pH where the highest COD removal efficiency by 54% was achieved were determined respectively as 10A and 6.62.The study also it was seen that 58%COD removal was reached for the KCl concentration of 0.5 mg/L that was applied.In the chemical coagulation study, the highest removal efficiencies were obtained as 36%, 95% and 97% for respectively COD, color and turbidity.The results show that higher efficiency could be achieved by electrocoagulation as a pre-treatment step. Using disposable screen-printed electrodes is a convenient way of monitoring environmental pollution, production process control etc. Usually, commercially available screen-printed electrodes are used, but more and more studies are being carried out in the field of printing electrodes on thinner, low-cost and versatile substrates, including paper. In the present research, the comparison of screen-printed electrodes printed on different paper-based materials is presented. Two unique and innovative invasive plant-based papers made from (1) Japanese knotweed, (2) Canadian and Giant goldenrod and (3) commercially available cardboard were used as a printing material for the electrodes. The selected paper substrates were characterized, and screen-printed electrodes were printed. The influence of substrates' properties and pre- or post-treatment of the screen-printed electrodes on the electrochemical behaviour is thoroughly analyzed. The results indicate that the printing substrate (roughness) had the most significant influence on the cyclic voltammetry response. Comparing pre- and post-treatment of screen-printed electrodes, it was shown that grinding influenced the electrochemical activity significantly, while corona discharge does not have as significant influence. Besides, it was shown that the invasive plant-based papers are viable alternatives to commercially available papers and can be used as low-cost and eco-friendly alternatives for disposable screen-printed electrodes. • Ultraflexible and biodegradable PSCs on cellophane paper were achieved. • OMO electrodes exhibited stable resistance after 1000 bending CYC cycles (R = 1 mm). • PSCs on cellophane retained 97.6% of initial PCE after bending with radius of 0.3 mm. • PSCs on cellophane preserved 95.8% of initial PCE after 1000 bending cycles (R = 1 mm). Flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs) on paper are promising biodegradable power sources for wearable and portable electronics, while fabrication of paper-based PSCs with high mechanical flexibility and efficiency is still challenging due to the limited optimization of paper-based PSCs. Herein, flexible PSCs were demonstrated using 25 μm cellophane paper substrates combined with TiO 2 /ultrathin Ag/TiO 2 (OMO) electrodes, composing the typical structure of cellophane/OMO/C60 pyrrolidinetris-acid (CPTA)/CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 /Spiro-OMeTAD/Au. PSCs on cellophane paper exhibited a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.00%. More interesting, the performance of paper-based PSCs showed minor degradation after bending with the radius in the range of 0.3–10 mm: they retained 97.6% of the initial PCE after bending with a radius of 0.3 mm and even preserved 95.8% of the initial PCE after bending with a radius of 1 mm for 1000 cycles. The ultraflexibility of PSCs was ascribed to the ultrathin substrates to relieve strain in bended devices and superior flexibility of OMO electrodes. In the past few years, point-of-care testing (POCT) technology has crossed the boundaries of laboratory determination and entered the stage of practical applications. Herein, the latest advances and principal issues in the design and fabrication of paper-based bipolar electrode electrochemiluminescence (BPE-ECL) sensors, which are widely used in the POCT field, are highlighted. After introducing the attractive physical and chemical properties of cellulose paper, various approaches aimed at enhancing the functions of the paper, and their underlying principles are described. The materials typically employed for fabricating paper-based BPE are also discussed in detail. Subsequently, the universal method of enhancing BPE-ECL signal and improving detection accuracy is put forward, and the ECL detector widely used is introduced. Furthermore, the application of paper-based BPE-ECL sensors in biomedical, food, environmental and other fields are displayed. Finally, future opportunities and the remaining challenges are analyzed. It is expected that more design concepts and working principles for paper-based BPE-ECL sensors will be developed in the near future, paving the way for the development and application of paper-based BPE-ECL sensors in the POCT field and providing certain guarantee for the development of human health. • Preparation and application prospect of paper-based BPE-ECL sensor are discussed. • Approaches to boost functionalization of paper and existing limitations are described. • Fabricating BPE from classical electrode materials are introduced exhaustively. • Strategies of enhancing ECL signal to improve device sensitivity are displayed. Globe Thistles-Like NiCo 2 S 4 and rGO grow on flexible paper for the detection of H 2 O 2. [Display omitted] • To paper as the basement, successfully developed a low cost and biodegradable flexible electrochemical sensor electrode materials. • NiCo 2 S 4 microspheres with unique globe thistles-like structure was prepared for the first time. • The NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP electrode has high sensitivity, low LOD, and wide linear range. The Globe Thistles-Like (GTL) NiCo 2 S 4 nanostructures were supported on reduced graphene oxide modified filter paper (FP). The prepared GTL NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP is investigated as a disposable and flexible electrode for the electrochemical detection of H 2 O 2 in alkaline media. Owing to the rich redox active sites, the synergistic effect between Co3+ and Ni2+, and the rapid electron transportation of substituting sulfur (S) for oxygen (O) in NiCo 2 O 4 , the GTL NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP exhibits considerable enzyme-free H 2 O 2 sensing performance with wide linear H 2 O 2 ranging from 38.8 to 37306.8 μM, high sensitivity of 2.4326 mA mM−1 cm−2, and low detection limit of 0.08 μM. The GTL NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP electrode has stable sensing performance and is highly selective toward analyte for physiological interfering species. The excellent electrochemical performance of GTL NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP composite is attributed to the GTL structure of NiCo 2 S 4. By studying the hydrothermal reaction time, electrochemical active surface area, and hydrophilic-hydrophobic surfaces of GTL NiCo 2 S 4 /rGO/FP composite, the relationship between the microstructure and sensing performance of the composite was elucidated. To investigate the effect of aging on surface discharge of the pressboard on the shielding electrode at the end of bushing, a thermal aging preparation methods of different aging degrees of pressboard samples, surface defect model, and the associated hemisphere are designed and the step‐up method is used for subsequent experimental work. Finally, the partial discharges (PDs) under different degrees of aging are compared and combined with Fourier Transform Infrared spectra and electric field simulation. Results show that the pre‐discharge occurs mainly in the oil gap between the hemispherical electrode edge and the pressboard. The aging of the pressboard exerts no obvious effect on the discharge characteristics in the initial stage of PD; with the development of the discharge, the development of aging of pressboard leads to a higher electric field intensity acting over a greater area, the more intense the discharge, the faster the relative discharge increases and the larger its amplitude. This discharge will cause decomposition of the oil in the pores of the aging pressboard thus generating gas bubbles which will move as discharge develops. When the bubbles reach the surface of the pressboard, the local electric field intensity will increase and the discharge will become more intense. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flexible electronics based on the paper have attracted significant attention. A paper-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) consisting of commercial and low-cost materials, e.g., printer paper, polytetrafluoroethylene tape, and conductive ink, was proposed in this study. This TENG unit can directly illuminate 24 blue commercial LEDs. Furthermore, compound paper-based TENGs were developed and a considerable enhancement of the electrical output performance was thereby realized. In this study, we explored the facile and quick dry transfer method to fabricate a paper-based electrode for flexible printed energy storage system. The conventional Ag nanoparticle suspension with high solid contents above ~50 wt% was confirmed to be deposited on a super hydrophobic polyethylene terephthalate (SHP-PET) substrate without a special ink formulation or surface treatment of substrate. The silver nanoparticle (AgNP) layer on the SHP-PET was able to be transferred only onto the toner-printed region of the paper substrate during a simple lamination process, thereby realizing the patterned AgNP conductive lines on the paper substrates. The AgNP/toner/paper electrodes were highly robust, showing no deterioration in conductivity after taping for 100 times. Moreover, the AgNP/toner/paper electrodes successfully functioned as flexible electrodes; thus, light emitting diodes connected to the AgNP/paper electrodes could be operated under folding deformation without significant loss of brightness. As a potential application in flexible energy storage systems, a flexible supercapacitor based on the AgNP/toner/paper electrodes as the current collector was also demonstrated; it showed an excellent power density of 10.79–16.64 kW/kg and energy density of 1.85–4.65 Wh/kg. Flexible paper electrodes for supercapacitors were prepared with partially-exfoliated graphite and polypyrrole as the active materials. Graphite was coated on paper with pencil drawing and then electrochemically exfoliated using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique to obtain the exfoliated graphite (EG)-coated paper (EG-paper). Polypyrrole (PPy) doped with β-naphthalene sulfonate anions was deposited on EG-paper through in-situ polymerization, leading to the formation of PPy-EG-paper. The as-prepared PPy-EG-paper showed a high electrical conductivity of 10.0 S·cm-1 and could be directly used as supercapacitor electrodes. The PPy-EG-paper electrodes gave a remarkably larger specific capacitance of 2148 F·g-1 at a current density of 0.8 mA.cm-2, compared to PPy-graphite-paper (848 F·g-1). The capacitance value of PPy-EG-paper could be preserved by 80.4% after 1000 charge/discharge cycles. In addition, the PPy-EG-paper electrodes demonstrated a good rate capability and a high energy density of 110.3 Wh·kg-1 at a power density of 121.9W·kg-1. Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) are an efficient and versatile tool for ion detection. However, portability and applicability for field applications are often limited by the need of a conditioning step, and high cost of the needed bulky reference electrode. Herein, the traditional conditioning protocol of ISEs has been eliminated and a paper-based solid-contact ISE (PBSC-ISE) has been integrated with a paper-based solid-contact reference electrode (PBSC-RE) in a single strip format for on-site analysis. The PBSC-RE is based on the copolymer methyl methacrylate-co-decyl methacrylate (MMA-DMA) (support matrix), combined with ionic liquids (ILs) to create and maintain a stable potential that is un-affected by a change in ionic activity. This single-strip ready-to-use sensor yields a Nernstian response towards Na +, K + , and I − ions with submicromolar limits of detection, and is able to be used for multiplex analysis. Paper based microfluidic devices have emerged as a simple and low cost platform for efficient clinical diagnostics. An effort has been made in the present work to develop a microfluidic cholesterol biosensor using paper based platform. Microfluidic channels have been fabricated by patterning filter paper (Whatman 1) using photolithography. SU 8 photoresist formed a hydrophobic barrier on the paper with microchannels of dimensions 1000 μm(w)×100 μm(t). A three electrode system was fabricated by simple mask printing of graphite as the working, as well as the counter electrodes, and silver as the reference electrode. The working electrode was modified using nickel oxide nanoparticles prepared using co-precipitation method. Cholesterol oxidase enzyme is spotted on the test zone and chronoamperometric measurements are taken for different concentrations of cholesterol in the range of 0.12-10.23 mM, giving a quick and sensitive detection with a sensitivity of 24 µA mM−1 cm−2. An inkjet-printed relative humidity sensor based on capacitive changes which responds to different humidity levels in the environment is presented in this work. The inkjet-printed silver interdigitated electrodes configuration on the paper substrate allowed for the fabrication of a functional proof-of-concept of the relative humidity sensor, by using the paper itself as a sensing material. The sensor sensitivity in terms of relative humidity changes was calculated to be around 2 pF/RH %.
