Delamination is one of the life‐limiting failure modes for fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite composites resulting in poor damage tolerance, as this failure mode occurs at considerably lower loads. Owing to the enormous demand and mass production of FRP composites, a large amount of fiber waste is produced worldwide. This triggers concern about utilizing these fiber wastes for some valuable applications. The present study aims to improve the overall damage tolerance of laminated glass/epoxy composites via the introduction of waste short carbon fibers (SCFs) reinforcement in the epoxy matrix. The effect of various SCF contents (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt%) in glass fiber/epoxy composites were evaluated experimentally for their interlaminar fracture toughness in terms of both crack development and propagation under mode I and II interlaminar fracture toughness tests, at elevated temperatures (30, 50, and 70°C). Based on the experimental results, glass/epoxy composite with 0.1 wt% of SCF revealed 13.49% and 20.45% increment in mode I and II interlaminar fracture toughness, respectively, at ambient temperature. A positive reinforcement effect could be noticed for GIC and GIIC values up to 50°C. However, due to residual interfacial stresses, interfacial debonding, and epoxy softening, a negative reinforcement effect could be noticed at 70°C. Delamination initiation and crack propagation mechanisms have been explored at elevated temperatures. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers. Hybrid composites are referred to as high-performance FRP materials used in safety-critical structural applications. Generally, FRP composite laminates are very weak in their out-of-plane properties, to address this issue unidirectional (UD) Glass laminates are prepared by modifying the matrix using plasma-treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in epoxy matrix and compared fracture toughness characteristics with low-cost micro fillers like Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3). These Nano and Micro fillers are loaded with 0.5wt%, 1wt% and 2wt% in the epoxy matrix while making FRP laminates. Adding these fillers into the epoxy matrix was caused a significant increase in the out-of-plane load-bearing capacity of the composites as compared to plain Glass epoxy laminates. Thus, the fracture toughness was enhanced by 20-26% and 14-17% under mode I and mode II loading respectively. The acoustic emission monitoring with artificial neural networks predicts the ultimate strength of glass/epoxy composite laminates using Acoustic Emission Data. The ultimate loads of all the specimens were used to characterise the emission of hits during failure modes. The six layered glass fiber laminates were prepared (in woven mat form) with epoxy as the binding medium by hand lay-up technique. At room temperature, with a pressure of 30 kg/cm2, the laminates were cured. The laminates of standard dimensions as per ASTM D3039 for the tensile test were cut from the lamina. The Acoustic Emission (AE) test was conducted on these specimens under the load of uni-axial tension in the 10 Ton capacity Universal Testing Machine (UTM). In the monitoring process, acoustic emission parameters such as hits, counts, energy, duration, Root Mean Square (RMS) Value and amplitude were recorded. The present study involves frequency-driven exploration of bi-directional, industry-driven, laminated composite glass/epoxy beams by experimental and finite element analysis. The experimental vibration responses were ensured through a vibration first Fourier transform (FFT) analyzer. The finite element predictions were made using MATLAB platform by developing a programmable computer code accounting for shear deformation. The results conclude that the free-vibration finite element predictions for glass/epoxy beams are sensitive to effects of different boundary conditions and span-to-thickness ratios. The present study will assist in our understanding of modal behaviour towards design and service of laminated beams in the frequency domain and can serve as experimental benchmark results. This study focuses on developing and implementing Mamdani hybrid fuzzy logic inference system (FIS) for transverse crack detection and fault diagnosis in a woven fiber laminated glass/epoxy composite beam using different vibration modes of natural frequencies. The shifting of vibration is attributed to the implication of cracks. These vibration signatures are fuzzified through hybrid fuzzy sets (triangular, trapezoidal, Gaussian) and scaled to crack location and depth using the fuzzy rules and defuzzification process. The vibration signatures are recorded using ABAQUS finite element (FE) simulation software for a fixed beam and are fed as input parameters to the developed FIS for computing the desired outputs. The realization for crack depth and position is experimentally verified through a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analyzer. The experimental results with simulated data show that fuzzy logic application detects crack positions and depth accurately at different levels. It is concluded that the hybrid FIS bears a close resemblance to the experimental analysis and also stands out as an effective method for crack detection in LCB over other standalone methods. This research work investigates the influence of hybrid particulate fillers, Mg–Al layered double hydroxide (LDH), and nanoclay (NC), on the mechanical properties and formability of glass laminate AA5052 epoxy composites (GLARE). The composite laminates were prepared by varying the weight percentage (i.e., 3, 4, and 5 wt%) of the hybrid fillers in the epoxy resin. The conventional hand layup technique was utilized for the fabrication of the laminates. The tensile test samples were prepared in different orientations with respect to the rolling direction (i.e., 0°, 45°, and 90°) to address their anisotropic nature. The flexural, impact, lap shear, and formability tests were conducted as per ASTM and IS standards. The Erichsen cupping test was performed to study the formability of the composite laminates. For each test, the results were compared with that of the laminates containing individual LDH filler, NC filler, and no filler material. The results showed that the composite laminate with 5 wt% of LDH + NC hybrid filler exhibited enhanced tensile properties, impact energy, and lap shear strength while the laminate of 4 wt% LDH + NC filler possessed better flexural properties. The formability of the composite laminates with hybrid LDH + NC fillers was observed to be lower than that of the laminates with individual filler materials and laminate without any filler. Cracks can occur in the composite structures during production, assembly, or usage. Environment temperature, deformation rate, and crack geometry have a direct influence on the fracture behavior of laminated composites. In this study, the fracture behavior of S‐2 glass/epoxy composites having different crack geometry at different temperatures and deformation rates was investigated experimentally and numerically. Within the scope of the study, the fracture toughness (K) and strain energy release rate (G) values of samples with 5 mm crack geometry were calculated for the crack tip opening conditions in Mode I and Mode I/II. Fracture tests at different environmental temperatures were performed to investigate the effects of temperature on fracture behavior. Fracture tests were achieved at three different deformation rates, to exhibit the relationship between crack initiation and deformation rate. Also, the fracture behavior of S‐2 glass/epoxy laminated composites was analyzed by using the finite element method (FEM). S‐2 glass fabric reinforced composite is used as a new alternative to traditional building materials, especially in the aviation, space and military industries. The results obtained from the experimental and FEM studies of this composite structure showed that different environmental and loading conditions were effective on the fracture behavior of the composite structure. This research work is focused on development of epoxy based fiber metal laminate (FML) that comprised of multi‐walled carbon nano‐tube (MWCNT), glass fiber, and aluminum metal sheet. The hand layup technique was employed to fabricate the sandwich FML with different weight percentages (3, 4, and 5 wt%.) of MWCNT. The mechanical properties of the developed FMLs were determined through tensile, flexural, lap shear, and hardness tests following ASTM and IS standards. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to characterize the failure mechanism of composites. The FML with MWCNT offered superior tensile and shear properties up to the addition of 4 wt%. The MWCNTs were found to be agglomerated in the epoxy when added more than 4 wt%. The FML's showed larger deformation before complete failure in shear mode with respect to the addition of MWCNTs. However, there was no considerable improvement recorded in the flexural and impact behavior of the FML composition. Composite material has attractive applications in electronic devices; glass fiber/copper reinforced epoxy is one completive material in Micro–Electro–Mechanical-Systems (MEMS). Upon operation, mechanical vibration arises from the electrical current fluctuations causing damage and consequently affect its performance. On the other hand, size effect in the strength of a material is referred to as a decrease in the nominal strength of a scaled open hole structure. Therefore, this work aims to study the scaling phenomenon concerning dynamic and vibration for a composite structure used in MEMS devices. At this end, a matrix of specimens with 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 mm diameter circular holes of copper/laminated glass fiber reinforced epoxy plated have subjected to simple vibration test modal analysis using the free-fallen hammer. A simple finite element model is built to obtain different shape modes which revealed the different mode shapes and Mises stress effect regions, moreover the frequency factor at each mode. The response of the material to free vibration has given different trends with holes. With increasing specimen size, the natural frequencies increase, this is opposite results when increasing the static load. The Finite element results are in good agreement with the published ones. In this study, a multi-parameter analysis, using Taguchi method for design of experiments, has been conducted to investigate the optimum curing conditions for GNPs/E-glass fabric/epoxy laminated nanocomposites. The independent variables in the L25 Taguchi orthogonal array were heating rate, curing temperature and curing time, addressing five levels each. Tensile and 3-point bending tests were performed for each experiment number (run number) of the Taguchi L25. The analysis shown that the most significant parameter for tensile strength is the time and for flexural strength is the temperature. The numerical simulation on the interlayer phase morphology evolution of "Ex‐Situ" toughened laminate was performed in this study. Specifically, the diffusion process of thermoset (TS) resin into thermoplastic (TP) resin was modeled incorporating the negative effect of resin curing reactions. The dynamic process of polymerization‐induced phase separation in TP/TS blends was predicted by the modified Cahn–Hilliard equation, in which the concentration‐dependent mobility was used to describe dynamic asymmetry between TP resin and TS resin, and the mixing free energy of the blends contained the contribution of resin curing reactions. The phase morphology evolution of polysulfone/epoxy blends in the interlaminar region was analyzed numerically, and the results indicated that the diffusion process resulted in the concentration‐gradient distribution of epoxy resin in interlayer, and when the concentration‐gradient decreased, the interlayer phase morphology developed from the coexistence of different microstructures to the presence of a single structural form. The post‐curing temperature played a more important role in the phase separation than that in resin curing reaction, and the separated structures were only observed in the local region of interlayer under low post‐curing temperature, due to small driving force of phase separation. An experimental study is performed to investigate the electro-mechanical response of three-dimensionally conductive multi-functional glass fiber/epoxy laminated composites under quasi-static tensile loading. To generate a threedimensional conductive network within the composites, multi-wall carbon nanotubes are embedded within the epoxy matrix and carbon fibers are reinforced between the glass fiber laminates using an electro-flocking technique. A combination of shear mixing and ultrasonication is employed to disperse carbon nanotubes inside the epoxy matrix. A vacuum infusion process is used to fabricate the laminated composites of two different carbon fiber lengths (150 mm and 350 mm) and four different carbon fiber densities (500, 1000, 1500, 2000 fibers/mm2). A four circumferential probe technique is employed to measure the in-situ electrical resistance of composites under tensile load. Although composites of both carbon fiber lengths showed significant decrease of sheet resistance under no mechanical load conditions, composites of 350 mm long carbon fibers showed the lowest resistivity of 10 X/sq. Unlike the resistance values, composites of 350 mm carbon fibers showed a significant decrease in Young's modulus compared to 150 mm counterparts. For the electro-mechanical response, composites containing carbon fibers of 150 mm long demonstrated a maximum value of percentage change in resistance. • Two-part epoxy-based formulation has been employed as a laminating adhesive, which has been utilized in the fabrication of aluminized glass fabric laminate. • Amine curing agent containing amide linkages has been employed, to bear the stress generated due to cyclic loading. • Aluminium powder has been added in the adhesive layer, to contribute in the reflective properties of the laminate, post abrasive damage. • Heat transmission on exposure to radiant heat as well as flame has been studied for the aluminized glass fabric laminate. The genre of the present work is related to adhesives, which has been realized as an integral component in the fabrication of outermost reflective laminates, which are destined for their use in fire proximity clothing. This aspect has not received much attention from researchers and has motivated us to investigate the potential of extensively available diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA)-based epoxy formulation as a laminating adhesive, where polyamide containing amine has been employed as a curing agent. The work is intended to adhere single–sided aluminized polyester film over glass fabric of satin weave pattern. It is to be noted that the single-sided metallized polyester film based reflective laminate loses its potential to reflect the radiant heat after abrasion damage. In view of the same, aluminium powder at 1, 3, and 5 wt.% loading has been incorporated in the optically clear layer of epoxy adhesive, with an aim to render reflective properties, which is expected to contribute in reflecting the radiant heat, after the abrasive damage. The influence of incorporating aluminium powder on the characteristics of adhesive has been investigated using techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), temperature sweep rheological experiments, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and surface energy measurements. Further, the peel-adhesion strength of the formulations has been determined as per ASTM D1876 standard. The heat transmission in the developed reflective laminates on exposure to radiant heat has been studied. The present work aims to analyze the strength and failure modes for the multi holes pin joint configurations made from unidirectional glass/epoxy nanoclay laminates. The geometric parameters, i.e. the distance from the free edge of the specimen to the diameter of the first two holes (E/D) ratio, the distance between two holes along the length of the specimen to the diameter of the hole (F/D) ratio, the distance between the two holes along the width of the specimen to the diameter of the hole (P/D) ratio and side width to diameter (S/D) ratio were studied for their effect on strength and failure modes of the joint. Design of experiment with Taguchi method was used for the optimization of different geometric parameters. Analysis of variance was applied to determine the influence of individual geometric parameter on the strength of the joint. The results demonstrate that the E/D and F/D ratios are the most significant parameters to increase the strength of multi holes pin joint configurations. Their percentage contributions were about 62% to 65% and 23% to 26%, respectively. Two types of laminate composites made of glass fibre/epoxy matrix (EPO_FV) and glass fibre/epoxy modified tri-block copolymer (Nanostrength) matrix (EPONS_FV) were manufactured by compression moulding. Some AFM investigations have been done to identify the Nanostrength dispersion in the epoxy matrix and some DMA analyses have been performed, at different frequencies, to understand the frequency or the strain rate sensitivity of both composites. Compared to EPO_FV, EPONS_FV exhibits a significant frequency/strain rate sensitivity. Impact resistance of the composite was investigated by means of low velocity impact tests. The low velocity impact results indicate that the addition of Nanostrength leads to the improved impact resistance and an increase in absorbed energy, especially at high impact energy level. SEM observations, performed on ion polished samples, reveal the presence of micro-cracks for both composites. Micro-cracks consist of a coalescence of fibre matrix de-bonding. It was also observed that EPONS_FV contains a lower density of micro-cracks compared to EPO_FV, confirming the fact that the composite with Nanostrength absorbs more energy by Nanostrength micelles cavitation. Abstract: The purpose of this work is the study of the mechanical behaviour in 3-point bending, in static and fatigue mode, of two different composite sandwiches laminate foam with unidirectional reinforcements and crossed SMS [04] and SMS [0/902/0]. These two sandwich composites were developed in laboratory. The specimens are made of fiberglass and epoxy resin for skins and PVC foam for the core. The tests in the static mode permitted the determination of the mechanical characteristics necessary to the fatigue tests and the mechanical behaviour of the materials. The fatigue tests made in controlled force gave curves which inform about the lifetimes of the materials. The observations of the fracture surfaces revealed the different modes of damages causing the material fracture. The lifetimes are characterized by the Wöhler curves. This study evidenced the influence of the reinforcement orientation on endurance of the studied material. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This article describes further development of a novel Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) approach described in one of our previous papers. Here these sensors have been used for the first time as a Piecewise Continuous System (PCS), which means that they are not only capable of following the deformation pattern but can also detect distinctive fracture events. In order to characterize the simultaneous compression and traction response of these sensors, multilayer glass laminate composite samples were prepared for 3-point bending tests. The laminate sample consisted of five layers of plain woven glass fabrics placed one over another. The sensors were placed at two strategic locations during the lay-up process so as to follow traction and compression separately. The reinforcements were then impregnated in epoxy resin and later subjected to 3-point bending tests. An appropriate data treatment and recording device has also been developed and used for simultaneous data acquisition from the two sensors. The results obtained, under standard testing conditions have shown that our textile fibrous sensors can not only be used for simultaneous detection of compression and traction in composite parts for on-line structural health monitoring but their sensitivity and carefully chosen location inside the composite ensures that each fracture event is indicated in real time by the output signal of the sensor. • One ultra-thin antiskid surface layer (UTASS) was designed and evaluated. • A cold-mixed epoxy resin binder was selected as the binder material of UTASS. • The UTASS can improve the skid resistance of epoxy asphalt concrete (EAC) pavement. • The developed EAC-UTASS composite structure performed good performances overall. To improve the skid resistance of epoxy asphalt-based concrete (EAC) pavement, a cold-mixed ultra-thin antiskid surface layer (UTASS) was developed and incorporated into the EAC pavement in this study. The performances of four types of epoxy resin-based binders were assessed. The best binder type was selected and UTASS preparation procedures were determined. Subsequently, the skid resistance, high-temperature rutting resistance, low temperature cracking resistance, and interlayer bonding properties of the EAC-UTASS composite structure (with the UTASS on the top of the EAC) were evaluated using a series of tests, and the performances of EAC-UTASS were compared with several other composite structures that are commonly used in the steel bridge deck pavement (SBDP) in China. The results showed that the texture depth of EAC-UTASS is almost 10 times of that of the pavement composite structures with an EAC surfacing structure. In addition, EAC-UTASS has excellent high-temperature rutting resistance, low-temperature cracking resistance and interlayer bonding stability. Finally, a stripping resistance test was utilized to evaluate the UTASS based on a third-scale Model Mobile Loading Simulator (MMLS3). The service life of UTASS was determined based on the anti-stripping coefficient threshold value of 80%. Traditional epoxy resin (EP) materials have difficulty to meet the performance requirements in the increasingly complex operating environment of the electrical and electronic industry. Therefore, it is necessary to study the design and development of new epoxy composites. At present, fluorinated epoxy resin (F-EP) is widely used, but its thermal and mechanical properties cannot meet the demand. In this paper, fluorinated epoxy resin was modified by ordered filling of fluorinated graphene oxide (FGO). The effect of FGO interlayer spacing on the thermal and mechanical properties of the composite was studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It is found that FGO with ordered filling can significantly improve the thermal and mechanical properties of F-EP, and the modification effect is better than that of FGO with disordered filling. When the interlayer spacing of FGO is about 9 Å, the elastic modulus, glass transition temperature, thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal conductivity of FGO are improved with best effect. Furthermore, we calculated the micro parameters of different systems, and analyzed the influencing mechanism of ordered filling and FGO layer spacing on the properties of F-EP. It is considered that FGO can bind the F-EP molecules on both sides of the nanosheets, reducing the movement ability of the molecular segments of the materials, so as to achieve the enhancement effect. The compatibility between the majority of thermoplastic veils (TPVs) and epoxies is typically poor, owing to the inherently low surface energies of thermoplastics. This tends to largely affect the toughening performance of TPVs as interlayer materials of carbon fibre/epoxy composites. The traditional methods for surface activation of thermoplastics, such as corona discharge, plasma treatment and acid etches, are not applicable to TPVs as they could cause significant damage to the thermoplastic fibres with nano-/micro-scale diameters. Herein, a UV-irradiation technique was proposed to active the surfaces of polyphenylene-sulfide (PPS) veils, that effectively improved their adhesion with epoxies. Consequently, the effects of an improved veil/epoxy adhesion on the mode-I and mode-II fracture behaviour and corresponding fracture mechanisms of the interleaved laminates were investigated. It was found that an improved veil/epoxy adhesion significantly enhanced the toughening performance of the PPS veils for the laminates manufactured by resin transfer moulding of non-crimp fabrics, by introducing additional carbon fibre delamination and significant PPS fibre damage during the fracture process. In contrast, the increased level of veil/epoxy adhesion inhibited PPS fibre bridging during the fracture process of the laminates produced from unidirectional prepregs, and caused considerable adverse effects on the fracture performance. The low velocity impact behavior of basalt/epoxy composites, seen as an eco-friendly replacement of glass-epoxy composites, has not been studied systematically so far. Here, the elastic elasto-plastic properties, strengths, intralaminar and interlaminar fracture energies were determined. The intralaminar energies were determined using compact tension and compression tests. The elasto-plastic properties needed in the plastic potential were determined using off-axis test. These properties are used in Finite Element (FE) code with an elasto-plastic damage model developed earlier to simulate the impact response of cross-ply laminates basalt/epoxy laminates. Low velocity impact (LVI) experiments at 10 J, 20 J and 30 J are performed on these composites. The FE simulation is successful in capturing force, energy, deflection histories and damage zones showing a close match to the experiments. In the present research, a novel dynamic constitutive micromechanical (DCM) model was developed to predict the strain rate dependent mechanical behavior of laminated glass/epoxy composites. The present model is an integration of the generalized strain rate dependent constitutive model as a constitutive model for the neat polymer, the plasticity model of Huang as a micromechanical model, and dynamic progressive failure criteria. This model is able to predict the longitudinal and transverse tensile and in-plane shear behaviors of unidirectional glass/epoxy composites with arbitrary fiber volume fractions at arbitrary strain rates. The present model can also predict the stress-strain behavior of laminated composites with different layups and fiber volume fractions at arbitrary strain rates.
