Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) is an iconic fish species that is present across the remote subarctic Barrenlands, yet our lack of understanding of their distributional patterns constrains predictions of anthropogenic effects on Barrenland populations. These adfluvial fish rely on seasonal lake-stream connections to migrate, spawn, and rear. We address knowledge gaps on what Barrenland stream attributes are suitable for rearing young-of-year Arctic grayling. Visual surveys of young-of-year Arctic grayling were conducted in 48 streams near Baker Lake, Nunavut, Canada. Occupancy modeling was used to relate stream habitat and landscape variables to fish presence/absence. The best predictors of occupancy were total area of contributing upstream lakes and landcover (upland/lowland); stream basins with larger contributing upstream lake area and more lowland cover were more likely to be occupied. Results suggest that occupancy reflects reliability of stream connectivity throughout the open water season and across years. The occupancy model developed here can adequately predict stream suitability for young-of-year Arctic grayling using lake area and land classification data that are remotely accessed. This may lessen the considerable financial and logistical constraints of conducting field research on Arctic grayling in the vast Barrenlands and facilitate more directed field programs to inform conservation and mitigation plans.

Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) can migrate long distances to spawn, but many populations currently spawn in systems where the length of accessible riverine migratory habitat has been greatly reduced by dam construction. Sea-run brown trout (Salmo trutta) have a highly phenotypically plastic life history that allows them to be effective colonizers and competitors in freshwater. This paper documents a previously unknown spawning behaviour in a brackish, tidally influenced estuary 14 km from the mouth of the Vosso River, a major Atlantic salmon- and sea-run brown trout–producing river in western Norway. Putative spawning gravel was observed, and sea-run brown trout deposited eggs that hatched in April. Survival of recruits was high (> 95%) in the tidal spawning gravel. These areas are strongly tidally influenced with a peak of 23.17 psu recorded at the lowest spawning ground. The observation of spawning so far from the river mouth may be unique in such a system with a long estuary but provides important insight into the biology of sea trout. Invasion of pink salmon, also known to spawn in estuaries, may negatively affect the competitive balance of sea trout with other salmonids in rivers where sea trout populations rely on recruitment from these relatively extreme spawning areas. Restoration of estuaries that have been modified by dredging or channelization may be important to ensure quality and heterogenous habitat for sea trout spawning given that haline spawning grounds could contribute to population resilience.

Lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens spawn at the base of Kakabeka Falls, a 39 m waterfall on the Kaministiquia River, a tributary to Lake Superior. Access to this historical spawning site can be restricted or delayed due to hydroelectric flow fluctuations that coincide with the A. fulvescens spawning season. The objectives of this study were to determine (a) the necessary flow conditions that facilitate spawning site access; (b) quantity and duration of flow required for successful spawning and dispersal of larvae; and (c) evaluate recruitment of juvenile A. fulvescens in relation to flow. A. fulvescens spawning migrations were tracked using a stationary telemetry receiver that logged the movements of 166 A. fulvescens fitted with radio-transmitters. Unrestricted access to the spawning site was facilitated when spawning flow was controlled at 23 m3 s-1 in 2004 and 17 m3 s-1 in 2006. Fluctuating (0.5-8.5 m3 s-1 ) and delayed spawning flows resulted in restricted and delayed access to the spawning site. Flow duration for successful egg incubation, hatch and larval dispersal was determined by sampling larvae using drift nets and quantified using cumulative temperature units (CTU). Over 10 years, 10,083 larvae were captured between 31 May and 20 July with 97% of the drift occurring prior to 30 June. From the date of first spawning to the end of larval dispersal took an average of 38.6 days, and the mean CTU value was 398.6. In general, a minimum flow of approximately 14.5 m3 s-1 from the date of initial spawning to the accumulation of c. 400 CTU ensured successful hatch and larval dispersal. During the timeframe of this study, recruitment was variable. This study described the complex and variable reproductive life history of A. fulvescens and defined spawning flow requirements ecologically, which can be used to develop operational provisions at hydropower facilities to ensure successful reproduction.

River herring (Alosa spp.) are anadromous fish that enter North American Atlantic coastal rivers and lakes each spring to spawn. Anthropogenic structures such as dams and tide gates serve as physical obstacles that limit river herring access to spawning habitat. This study examined the physical and ecological components affecting herring passage through a tide gate by applying a time-to-event analysis framework to multiple movement behaviors derived from telemetry data. Herring had higher passage success early in the season (78%) than later (16%). Key behaviors that govern passage varied with diel period, tide, and flow direction through the gates. Furthermore, these behaviors shifted as the season progressed, consistent with the hypothesis that predator avoidance may be driving passage failure late in the spawning season.

Sockeye salmon that spawn downstream of rearing lakes are an important example of the challenges faced by organisms with complex life histories requiring connectivity in aquatic habitat complexes. Specifically, newly emerged juvenile sockeye salmon must migrate upstream, against the flow of water, if they are to reach lake rearing habitat. Here, we examine the spatial and temporal dynamics of the water velocity landscape and juvenile sockeye salmon movement and condition at increasing distances downstream from the lake outlet of an important sockeye salmon system, the Babine Lake of British Columbia, one of Canada’s largest and most important sockeye salmon rearing lakes. The results of this study indicate that (i) there were seasonal and spatial patterns of water velocities that exceed the ability of juveniles to swim upstream to lake rearing habitat, (ii) higher water discharge was associated with more velocity barriers and potentially with less upstream movement of juveniles, and (iii) juveniles rearing in the lake obtained larger sizes (30% longer and 150% heavier) than those in downstream river habitats. Multiple processes that may be influencing these patterns could include more abundant food resources, lower metabolic demands, or size-selective immigration, emigration, or mortality among habitats. Years and seasons with high discharge may temporarily create one-way, downstream transport routes at lake outlets. Long-term changes in hydrology, perhaps driven by climate variability or land-use change, may control the degree to which lake outlets function as bidirectional travel corridors or one-way travel routes for young sockeye salmon.

The residence and movement patterns of the marbled flounder Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae were investigated around a spawning ground located off the coast of Nagasaki point, southern Suo Nada, Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Twenty marbled flounder (9 females and 11 males) tagged with ultrasonic transmitters were released on November 29, 2017, before the peak spawning season (peak spawning season: mid–late December), and their distributions were recorded by 15 acoustic receivers until January 21, 2018. Eighteen fish roamed around in the study site or disappeared from the study site but appeared again. The 18 fish then emigrated from the study site by mid-December. The remaining two (1 female and 1 male) of the 20 tagged fish resided until mid-January and continuously roamed around areas of silt–clay to very coarse sand bottom sediments both day and night during the peak spawning season. Movement patterns of marbled flounder may be related to spawning site selection or reproductive behaviors. The fish that emigrated may have roamed around the study site or surrounding areas in order to judge whether to spawn there, but most of them may not have in the study site. In contrast, the remaining two fish may have reproduced within the study site.

Keystone predators can impact many prey species, including those that are endangered. A requisite to assess the impact predators have on different prey populations is to identify the species being consumed in different types of communities, while accounting for possible seasonal variation in consumption. Here we used analysis of North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) scat to assess the impact river otters have on their prey populations, particularly endangered salmonids and migrating birds. We analyzed the prey composition of 1,411 river otter scats collected from 10 sites in Humboldt County, California, between 2011 and 2012. Analysis of prey items in scat placed study sites into four distinct clusters based on diet. Fish, mostly from the families Gasterosteidae, Cottidae, and Pholidae, formed the primary prey component, and crustaceans, birds, amphibians, and insects, also were important components of river otter diet. Salmonids constituted < 5% of overall diet, but river otters consumed the largest percentage of salmon during salmon spawning season at the inland cluster where salmonids spawn. Scat marking intensity varied between clusters and seasons, with the most scats collected in the autumn and the fewest in the winter/spring, except at the inland cluster where the pattern of marking activity was reversed. River otters may be responding to seasonal migrations of endangered and threatened salmonids. Diet surveys of this type are useful for monitoring resource use by top predators in aquatic ecosystems.

Median timing of reproduction in salmonid populations is generally consistent among years, reflecting long-term patterns of natural selection from characteristics of the local environment. However, altered selection from factors related to climate change or human intervention might shift timing over generations, with implications for the population’s persistence. To study these processes, we modeled median timing of redd (nest) counts as an index of spawning timing by natural-origin Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Skagit River system in Washington State, USA. Over the last 2–6 decades, natural-origin salmon have been spawning later by 0.03–0.52 days·year–1, while a naturally spawning group that is influenced by strays from a hatchery has been spawning earlier by 0.19 days·year–1. Trends in the spawning timing of hatchery-origin strays may reflect opposing selection from the hatchery, where egg take for propagation has become earlier by 0.58 days·year–1. As mean August river temperatures have risen over the period of record, hatchery timing trends may be moving in the opposite direction from the plastic or adaptive patterns expressed by natural-origin fish.

The reproductive characteristics of crabs play an important role in their fisheries management. The blue swimming crab Portunus pelagicus is one of the most commercially important crustaceans distributed along the Egyptian Coast; it has a great demand for their esteemed food. The spawning season of P. pelagicus was estimated based on three parameters: the monthly variation in both the maturity stages and in the gonado-somatic index (GSI) beside the histological examination of the ovarian structure. P. pelagicus was capable of continuous spawning throughout the year, where the mature stage was found to be distributed along the whole year indicating that crabs may be spawn at different times. P. pelagicus spawning mainly takes place twice, January-February (winter period) and June- August (summer period). As the monthly variation in GSI exhibit two distinct peaks in winter and summer. The mean size at which P. pelagicus became potentially reproductive (Lm50) was estimated to be 9.32 cm CW for males and 8.45 cm CW for females. To achieve the sustainable utilization, it is recommended to increase the minimum fishing size of this crab to at least 11.0 cm CW to protect the stock biomass and allow young individuals to reach the suitable marketable size.

In response to perceived, but unknown variation among the size selection of narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) by artisanal gillnetters off Iran, and the need for such data to control exploitation as a precursor to balanced harvesting, the effects of two common mesh sizes (130 and 140 mm stretched mesh opening made from multifilament twine) on catches were investigated over one fishing year (nine months encompassing autumn to spring). Both mesh sizes mostly caught S. commerson at fork lengths (FL) larger than mean sizes at maturity (>67 cm), with the mean size selection incrementally increasing in the 130-mm mesh gillnet from autumn, and especially during spring. The greater selection occurred concurrent with an increasing condition factor (CF) among S. commerson, which typically spawn in late spring/early summer. Conversely, the relative size-selection of the 140-mm mesh gillnet decreased in spring, attributed to increasing CF precluding the capture of larger fish. Such seasonal variation in size selection might be countered by increasing mesh size to ~145 or 150 mm in spring. However, the existing 140-mm mesh might positively affect stock biomass by allowing larger, more fecund fish to avoid capture during spawning. The data support the strong influence of biological and environmental factors on gillnet size selection, which might also extend to other migratory, pelagic species.

Understanding the extent and distribution of population structure and genetic connectivity of fisheries targets are crucial for informing management. This study uses population genomics to examine patterns of genetic structure of the market squid (Doryteuthis opalescens), one of the most important commercially harvested species in California. Data from 662 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci from a total of 149 individuals representing five monthly sampling groups (May–September 2014) in the Northern (Monterey) and Southern (Southern California) regions of the fishery (n = 8) revealed no significant genetic differentiation between regions (FST = 0.008, p > 0.05, FCT = − 0.006, p > 0.05). However, discriminant analysis of principal components and pairwise comparisons of genetic differentiation revealed unexpected complex patterns of fine-scale population structure over time. These results suggest the existence of smaller potentially genetically varied micro-cohorts that continually spawn in California, as opposed to the prevailing notion that spawning occurs in two asynchronous peaks in the Northern and Southern regions of the fishery, with important implications for fisheries management.

Anadromous salmonid fishes frequently exhibit strong geographic population structuring. However, population genetic differentiation of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) at fine geographic scales differs across equivalent spatial extents in different regions. So far, fine-scale genetic differentiation has not been assessed in rivers of the Baltic Sea, a region that contains an evolutionarily distinct Atlantic salmon lineage. Thus, Baltic salmon are currently managed on the river level, without focus on potential genetic structure and diversity within rivers. Here, we used microsatellites to characterize the genetic structure of wild juvenile salmon sampled throughout the interconnected, northern Baltic Tornio and Kalix Rivers. We found genetic differentiation within the two rivers, but not between them: salmon in the upper reaches differed from individuals in the lower reaches, regardless of river system. Further, examining smolts migrating from the river to the sea and adults returning from the sea to spawn, we found an association between the genetic structure and seasonal migration timing. Out-migrating smolts genetically assigned to upper river reaches were older and tended to reach the sea later in the season than smolts from the lower reaches. In contrast, mature adults originating from the upper reaches returned to the river early in the season. Our observation of genetic population structuring between downstream and upstream reaches of the large Tornio and Kalix rivers, and its association with migration timing, implies that careful temporal management of the northern Baltic fisheries would help to preserve the diversity and sustainability of the wild salmon stocks of these rivers.

The movement patterns of native migratory fishes may reflect different selection pressures in different environments that are associated with predictable patterns of temperature and discharge. Spatial and temporal variability in the movement patterns of adult Coho Salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch were explored with data that were collected from the Umpqua River basin, Oregon, focusing on two points in their return migration: (1) main-stem midriver migration timing of adult Coho Salmon as they pass Winchester Dam, Oregon, and (2) adult spawn timing in tributary streams of the Smith River. Main-stem migration of Coho Salmon as they pass Winchester Dam began 7 to 15 d after peak annual water temperature, when mean daily temperatures cooled to 18°C, but before the increases in discharge that are associated with autumn rains. Although migration timing appeared to be strongly related to river temperature, spawn timing of Coho Salmon in tributaries of the Smith River subbasin appeared to respond to a combination of both discharge and temperature thresholds. Spawning occurred after initial annual peak discharge events and when stream temperatures fell below a threshold of 12°C. These results directly inform water conservation and protection planning for environmental flow criteria and thermal ranges during migration and spawn timing of imperiled Coho Salmon in the Oregon Coast Range.

Seasonal aggregations at specific sites are common among some fish species. Experienced fishermen know where and when these aggregations happen, often targeting these spawning sites to increase their catch. This strategy can further contribute to endangering the survival of these species, especially for those already threatened by other forms of pressure. This study contributes knowledge to the spawning aggregation of fish in the north of Mozambique following survey work conducted around Cabo Delgado Province in six coastal villages in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The objectives of the study were 1) to identify the species and sites of spawning aggregation and 2) to determine the timing of spawning aggregations. Data collection consisted of interviews targeting the most experienced fishermen to obtain information on these subjects. The results indicate that out of 124 fishermen interviewed, 59% had knowledge of spawning aggregations. The information collected from fisher interviews revealed that there are at least six spawning locations and at least eight species aggregate to spawn (Leptoscarus vaigensis, Lethrinus harak, Lethrinus nebulosus, Lethrinus obsoletus, Lethrinus olivaceus, Plectorhinchus gaterinus, Plectorhinchus schotaf, Siganus sutor). Only Siganus sutor was reported to spawn in at least one of the fishing areas used by every village. The timing of spawning aggregations most reported by fishermen was during the Kusi (South) monsoon period.

The St. Marys River connects Lake Superior to Lake Huron, comprising the international border between Michigan, United States, and Ontario, Canada. This Great Lakes connecting channel naturally encompasses various habitats including lakes, wetlands, islands, tributaries, side channels, and main channels. The St. Marys River Rapids are shallow rock areas with high flow velocities (>1 m/s) in the upper river adjacent to the navigation locks and electric power generating stations, while the Little Rapids are shallow, recently restored rocky areas with lower velocities located about 7 km downstream. The St. Marys River Rapids provide important spawning habitat for several native and introduced fishes, but spawning by lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) was not previously documented. We sampled for lake sturgeon eggs and larvae in both locations during June and July 2018–2019 using weekly benthic egg mat lifts and overnight D-frame larval fish drift nets. Viable lake sturgeon eggs (11 in 2018, 45 in 2019) were collected in the tailrace of a hydroelectric power facility adjacent to the St. Marys River Rapids. Larval lake sturgeon (21 in 2018, 1 in 2019) were collected in the same area as the eggs. Neither lake sturgeon eggs nor larvae were collected at Little Rapids in either year. Our results are the first documentation of successful lake sturgeon spawning and larval drift in the upper St. Marys River. While our observations showed spawning in a human-made tailrace area, the fate of larvae produced here is unknown and warrants further research.

A variety of data needs challenge the successful restoration and management of alosine populations, including information on the migration, mortality, behavior, demographic rates, and distribution of fish, both in riverine and marine environments. Radiotelemetry with gastric‐implanted transmitters has typically been used to answer some of these questions; however, observing alosines over extended periods and in the marine environment has remained beyond the limitations of this technology and implantation technique. To address these issues, we conducted an acoustic telemetry study on American Shad Alosa sapidissima by using surgical implantation methods. We tagged fish during 2015 (n = 46) and 2016 (n = 52) in the Charles River, Massachusetts, an urbanized watershed where American Shad were believed to be extirpated prior to restoration efforts beginning in 2006. Surgical implantation produced rates of in‐river mortality (40% overall) and posttagging fallback (39% overall) that were comparable to those from traditionally used gastric implantation methods. Data from American Shad that were retained for statistical analyses (n = 59) demonstrated that Watertown Dam (at river kilometer 14.3) impeded upstream migration and that New Boston Dam and Locks (at the mouth of the river) delayed postspawn emigration from the river. In total, 49 American Shad were detected outside of the Charles River. The distribution and low number of total detections, despite a large number of nearshore arrays, suggest that American Shad occupy waters farther offshore during their marine phase. American Shad were detected as overwintering on the Scotian Shelf (n = 5) and the Mid‐Atlantic Bight (n = 1). In 2017, 10 of the individuals that were tagged in 2016 returned to spawn, providing the first reported data on total migration timing and migratory behavior free of handling effects. Surgical implantation of acoustic telemetry tags is an effective method that can provide necessary and previously unattainable data on a species of conservation need.

The spawning and well-being of fish in an ecosystem are closely linked to climatic cues, viz., temperature and rainfall. Reduced fitness can affect the reproductive performance and lead to skipped spawning. Benchmarking the threshold fitness required for a fish population to achieve readiness for spawning, and understanding how climatic parameters influence the fitness will aid in predicting the fate of its reproductive success in future climatic conditions. This study determined the threshold condition factor pre-spawning fitness (Kspawn50) at which 50% of the female Channa punctata population can be deemed fit for spawning. The optimal climate within which pre-spawning fitness is attained by this species under Indian climatic conditions was also identified. The study was conducted from June 2015 to September 2016, covering two spawning seasons (June–August) in a Gangetic floodplain wetland of West Bengal, India. The non-parametric Kaplan–Meier method (survival fit) was used for estimation of pre-spawning fitness. “Ready to spawn” females were classified based on binary coding of the gonadal maturity stages. The thermal and precipitation range within which spawning fitness is achieved was identified by using the locally weighted smoothing technique. Female C. punctata pre-spawning fitness (Kspawn50) ranged from 1.26 to 1.39 with an estimated median of 1.29 units. Temperatures between 29 and 32 °C and rainfall above 100 mm were conducive to attaining the requisite pre-spawning fitness in C. punctata. This is the first study benchmarking the pre-spawning fitness and optimal climate for C. punctata. Understanding spawning requirements can inform the climate change–induced impacts on reproductive plasticity and evolutionary adaptations of snakeheads in the Ganga river basin.

Octopus fisheries have prospered in many areas of the world ocean over the last six decades. Despite degradation and overexploitation of Chinese coastal ecosystems, octopus has become a stable Chinese domestic fishery species. Among the octopus species in the Bohai and Yellow, East and South China Seas, Amphioctopus fangsiao (d’Orbigny [in Ferussac & d’Orbigny], 1839–1841) plays an increasingly important role both economically and ecologically. However, no systematic research has been conducted on its biology and population dynamics in the China Seas. In this study, we characterized the growth and distribution of A. fangsiao in Haizhou Bay, Yellow Sea based on four years of trawl survey data. As the results, A. fangsiao is characterized by allometric growth and an overall sex ratio of 0.97 with a slight male bias. Small octopus can be observed through a whole year, suggesting that A. fangsiao may have an extended or continuous spawning season. A. fangsiao may migrate short distances along with seasonal changes and coastal currents, considering they overwinter in the offshore water and spawn in the inshore water. In addition to fishing pressure, annual variations in the population structure and biomass appeared to be influenced by ambient water temperature. These results provide basic biological information for a better understanding of the population dynamics and the ecological importance of A. fangsiao.

Invasive grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) are known to spawn in the Sandusky River, Ohio, USA, within the Great Lakes Basin, and are threatening to expand throughout the Great Lakes. Successful spawning is thought to require that eggs remain in suspension until hatching, which depends on river hydrodynamics and temperature-dependent egg development. Previous modelling efforts used one-dimensional hydrodynamic models that simplify egg movement by not simulating low-velocity zones within the river. To examine the effect of low-velocity zones on egg transit times and hatching rates, we developed a novel coupling of a biophysical Lagrangian particle tracker and three-dimensional hydrodynamic model on the Sandusky River during a high-flow event. The model successfully predicted egg-capture data for a range of developmental stages and revealed a mechanism that resuspends eggs trapped in low-velocity zones. The resuspension mechanism increases the residence time of grass carp eggs in spawning tributaries and can lead to successful hatching occurring in shorter distances than previously estimated. Grass carp potentially spawning in shorter tributary lengths has widespread implications for efforts preventing establishment in the Great Lakes Basin.

The ecosystems supporting Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) are changing rapidly as a result of climate change and habitat alteration. Understanding how—and how consistently—salmon populations respond to changes at regional and watershed scales has major implications for fisheries management and habitat conservation. Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) populations across Alaska have declined over the past decade, resulting in fisheries closures and prolonged impacts to local communities. These declines are associated with large‐scale climate drivers, but uncertainty remains about the role of local conditions (e.g., precipitation, streamflow, and stream temperature) that vary among the watersheds where salmon spawn and rear. We estimated the effects of these and other environmental indicators on the productivity of 15 Chinook salmon populations in the Cook Inlet basin, southcentral Alaska, using a hierarchical Bayesian stock‐recruitment model. Salmon spawning during 2003–2007 produced 57% fewer recruits than the previous long‐term average, leading to declines in adult returns beginning in 2008. These declines were explained in part by density dependence, with reduced population productivity following years of high spawning abundance. Across all populations, productivity declined with increased precipitation during the fall spawning and early incubation period and increased with above‐average precipitation during juvenile rearing. Above‐average stream temperatures during spawning and rearing had variable effects, with negative relationships in many warmer streams and positive relationships in some colder streams. Productivity was also associated with regional indices of streamflow and ocean conditions, with high variability among populations. The cumulative effects of adverse conditions in freshwater, including high spawning abundance, heavy fall rains, and hot, dry summers may have contributed to the recent population declines across the region. Identifying both coherent and differential responses to environmental change underscores the importance of targeted, watershed‐specific monitoring and conservation efforts for maintaining resilient salmon runs in a warming world., We investigated environmental effects on the productivity of 15 Chinook salmon populations in the Cook Inlet basin, Alaska. Across all populations, productivity declined with increased precipitation during the fall spawning and early incubation period and increased with above‐average precipitation during the juvenile rearing period. Above‐average stream temperatures during spawning and rearing periods had variable effects, including reduced productivity in many warmer streams and increased productivity in some colder streams. Productivity was also associated with regional indices of streamflow and ocean conditions, with high variability among populations.

Micro X-ray fluorescence (mu-XRF) analysis of otoliths was evaluated as a method to estimate the proportion of stocked one-summer-old whitefish Coregonus lavaretus L. in catches of adult fish (n = 20) ascending the River Kemijoki to spawn. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis was applied as control. Polished otoliths were scanned with mu-XRF to obtain strontium maps that were used to infer visually the provenance of the whitefish. Thirteen of the fish showed signs of being stocked as one-summer-old fingerlings. LA-ICP-MS was applied to determine the elemental composition in a spot outside the core of the otolith. The results were largely consistent with the visual inspection of the mu-XRF mapped otoliths. In conclusion, mu-XRF mapping successfully identified whitefish stocked as one-summer-old fingerlings. The vast majority of whitefish returning to the River Kemijoki to spawn were stocked fish.

The likelihood that fish will initiate spawning, spawn successfully, or skip spawning in a given year is conditioned in part on availability of energy reserves. We evaluated the consequences of spatial heterogeneity in thermal conditions on the energy accumulation and spawning potential of migratory bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) in a regulated river–reservoir system. Based on existing data, we identified a portfolio of thermal exposures and migratory patterns and then estimated their influence on energy reserves of female bull trout with a bioenergetics model. Spawning by females was assumed to be possible if postspawning energy reserves equaled or exceeded 4 kJ/g. Given this assumption, results suggested up to 70% of the simulated fish could spawn each year. Fish that moved seasonally between a cold river segment and a warmer reservoir downstream had a greater growth rate and higher propensity to spawn in a given year (range: 40%–70%) compared with fish that resided solely in the cold river segment (25%–40%). On average, fish that spawned lost 30% of their energy content relative to their prespawn energy. In contrast, fish that skipped spawning accumulated, on average, 16% energy gains that could be used toward future gamete production. Skipped spawning occurred when water temperatures were relatively low or high, and if upstream migration occurred relatively late (mid‐July or later) or early (early‐May or earlier). Overall, our modeling effort suggests the configuration of thermal exposures, and the ability of bull trout to exploit this spatially and temporally variable thermal conditions can strongly influence energy reserves and likelihood of successful spawning., We evaluated the consequences of spatial heterogeneity in thermal conditions on the energy accumulation and spawning potential of migratory bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) in a regulated river–reservoir system. Coral reefs are one of the ecosystems that have ecological functions for marine life, one of which is reef fish. Coral fish are marine biota that live in association with coral reefs. This study aims to determine the abundance of reef fish, the condition of coral reefs and the relationship between abundance of reef fish and coral reefs. This research was conducted in June 2019 in the waters of Tikus Island, Bengkulu City. The method used is a survey method. Data collection on reef fish was carried out using the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method and coral reefs condition data colletion is done using the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method. The abundance of reef fish found at the study site averages in the abundant category. At station I, an abundance of reef fish was 2,18 ind/m2, at station II it was 4,18 ind/m2, and at station III it was 1,27 ind/m2. While the average condition of coral reefs at the study site is include in the medium category. At station I, the percentage of live coral cover was 39,30% or include in the medium category. At station II, the percentage of live coral cover was 50,94% or include in the good category. And at station III, the percentage of live coral cover was 46,32% or include in the medium category. Coral fish and coral reefs have a fairly close relationship. Reef fish use coral reefs as a place to find food, shelter and spawn or breed.

Sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is a unique jawless vertebrate among the most primitive of all living vertebrates. This migratory fish is endangered in much of its native area due to dams, overfishing, pollution, and habitat loss. An introduced predator, the European catfish (Silurus glanis), is now widespread in Western and Southern European freshwaters, adding a new threat for sea lamprey migrating into freshwater to spawn. Here, we use a new prototype predation tag coupled with RFID telemetry on 49 individuals from one of the largest sea lamprey European populations (Southwestern France) to quantify the risk of predation for adult sea lampreys during its spawning migration in rivers with large populations of European catfish. We found that at least 80% of tagged sea lampreys (39 among 49) were preyed upon within one month, and that 50% of the released lampreys were rapidly consumed on average 8 days after tagging. This very high predation rate suggests that the European catfish represents a supplementary serious threat of extirpation for the native sea lamprey population we studied. This threat is likely to happen throughout most of the native lamprey distribution area, as the European catfish is becoming established almost everywhere the sea lamprey is.

Pelagic spawning riverine fish (pelagophils) spawn in free‐flowing river habitats with downstream drift of eggs and larvae but the spatial scale is often unknown, and this constitutes a major ecological knowledge gap. In the arid Darling River in south‐eastern Australia, the present objectives were: (i) to determine the potential downstream dispersal distance of young golden perch (Macquaria ambigua); and (ii) to evaluate whether provision of environmental water enhanced dispersal of young fish from Menindee Lakes to the lower Darling River (LDR) while also cueing further spawning in downstream lotic reaches. Golden perch spawned in unregulated lotic tributaries on a flood pulse and larvae drifted or dispersed >1,600 km downstream and entered large ephemeral productive floodplain lake nursery habitats as fully scaled fingerlings. Planned releases of environmental water cued golden perch spawning in the LDR and enabled juvenile fish to disperse downstream from the Menindee Lakes nursery into receiving populations in the LDR, Great Darling Anabranch, and southern Murray River, with some fish potentially completing an active migration of >2,100 km by age 1 year. The Darling River case study highlights the need for a system‐scale approach to the conservation management of pelagophilic fish, along with multi‐year perennial flow strategies to improve ecosystem integrity in large rivers globally.

This work aims to investigate reproductive biology of the Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus L. 1758) to provide biological base for management of its fisheries in the Mediterranean coast of Sinai, Egypt. Monthly samples of S. scombrus were collected from the commercial catch in different landing sites of the Mediterranean coast of Sinai during 2019. The length-weight relation was found as W= 0.0116 L2.9556, W= 0.0077 L3.091 and W= 0.0094 L3.022715 for males, females and combined sexes respectively. Overall sex ratio (males: females) was 1: 1.4 during the period of study. Gonado- Somatic Index (GSI) of females showed that S. scombrus spawn during March, April and May, since GSI peaked in these months (6.5, 7.2 and 5.2 % respectively). The lowest value of GSI of females was recorded in October (0.05%). Lengths at first sexual maturity (Lm) were determined as 23.2 and 23.4 cm for males and females respectively. The absolute fecundity (F) was increasing with the fish length and described by a power equation: F = 0.0014 L5.6414. The relative fecundity gradually increased from 2481.8 to 7599.3 eggs per cm (average 4748.9 eggs / cm). To protect and maintain the stock of Atlantic mackerel in the Mediterranean coast of Sinai, it is recommended to ban using fishing nets of illegal mesh sizes and other destructive fishing methods which catch small fish sizes. Length at first capture should be larger than length at first sexual maturity (> 23.4 cm) and ban fishing nets targeting S. scombrus during its spawning season (from March to May).

Populations of wild spring-run Chinook salmon in California’s Central Valley, once numbering in the millions, have dramatically declined to record low numbers. Dam construction, habitat degradation, and altered flow regimes have all contributed to depress populations, which currently persist in only a few tributaries to the Sacramento River. Mill Creek (Tehama County) continues to support these threatened fish, and contains some of the most pristine spawning and rearing habitat available in the Central Valley. Despite this pristine habitat, the number of Chinook salmon returning to spawn has declined to record low numbers, likely due to poor outmigration survival rates. From 2013 to 2017, 334 smolts were captured and acoustic tagged while out-migrating from Mill Creek, allowing for movement and survival rates to be tracked over 250 km through the Sacramento River. During this study California experienced both a historic drought and record rainfall, resulting in dramatic fluctuations in year-to-year river flow and water temperature. Cumulative survival of tagged smolts from Mill Creek through the Sacramento River was 9.5% (±1.6) during the study, with relatively low survival during historic drought conditions in 2015 (4.9% ± 1.6) followed by increased survival during high flows in 2017 (42.3% ± 9.1). Survival in Mill Creek and the Sacramento River was modeled over a range of flow values, which indicated that higher flows in each region result in increased survival rates. Survival estimates gathered in this study can help focus management and restoration actions over a relatively long migration corridor to specific regions of low survival, and provide guidance for management actions in the Sacramento River aimed at restoring populations of threatened Central Valley spring-run Chinook salmon.

The Green Sturgeon is a long-lived anadromous fish known to spawn in only three locations. Southern Distinct Population Segment (DPS) Green Sturgeon spawn only in the Sacramento drainage, while the Northern DPS spawns in the Klamath and Rogue rivers. In 2011, a young of year (YOY) Green Sturgeon was captured in the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam, providing preliminary evidence of a fourth spawning location. In 2017, four additional Green Sturgeon YOY of similar size were captured in the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam. Genetic analysis of all YOY samples indicates that they belong to the Northern DPS, confirming that the Northern DPS actually spawns in at least three locations. The detection of Green Sturgeon spawning in the Columbia River only in years with relatively high spring flow (2011, 2017), combined with confirmed correlations between flow and spawning for other White and Green Sturgeon populations, suggests that appropriate spawning conditions may only exist above a specific flow threshold. The Columbia River has the potential to play an important role in Green Sturgeon climate change adaptation due to its location at the northernmost end of the species’ reproductive range. We recommend future research to better quantify Green Sturgeon recruitment magnitude, frequency and dynamics in the Columbia River.

This study documented brown trout (Salmo trutta) spawning locations, redd construction timing, and associated environmental variables in an 850-m long mainstem section and a 400-m long diversion channel of Spearfish Creek within the city limits of Spearfish, South Dakota, USA in 2019. The first redds were observed on October 15, with no new redds observed after November 12. Redd construction peaked during the first week of November, when 23 redds were observed in the mainstem section and 50 in the diversion channel. Substrate size was significantly smaller, water temperatures significantly higher, and water velocities significantly greater in redd versus non-redd locations in both the mainstem reach and the diversion channel (P < 0.05). Six significant redd hotspots were observed in the diversion channel. Hotspots were associated with a small (0.1˚C), but significant, increase in water temperature from the rest of the channel locations. This is the first study to document redd locations in Spearfish Creek and will provide a baseline to evaluate future spawning activity, particularly as it may be affected by likely future anthropogenic changes potentially affecting the stream environment.

Pacific Lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus) are a native anadromous species that, like salmon, historically returned to spawn in large numbers in watersheds along the west coast of the United States (U.S.). Lamprey play a vital role in river ecosystems and are one of the oldest vertebrates that have persisted over time likely influencing the evolution of many aquatic species. Pacific Lamprey have declined in abundance and are restricted in distribution throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California. A key uncertainty influencing Pacific Lamprey status is the impact of climate change. We modified the NatureServe Climate Change Vulnerability Index (CCVI) to accommodate climate predictions from the International Panel on Climate Change. Using downscaled information, we characterized changes in 15 rivers occupied by Pacific Lamprey in the western U.S. We evaluated this risk under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 for two time periods (mid-century 2040–2069 and end-century 2070–2099). The CCVI scores generally increased when going from RCP 4.5 to RCP 8.5 in three Global Climate Models for both mid-century and end-century, which our analyses forecasts degraded stream temperature and hydrologic conditions under increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The geographically assessed results suggest that climate change impacts to Pacific Lamprey vulnerability are magnified in highly altered rivers. If we continue to observe greenhouse gas emission levels associated with the RCP 8.5, Pacific Lamprey will be at greater risk to climate change impacts. In order to mitigate the risk from climate change toward the end of the century, additional actions will need to be prioritized to rapidly reduce the impact of these threats such as increasing flow, creating backwater habitat, restoring riparian vegetation and reducing stream disturbances. The findings revealed the patterns of vulnerability for Pacific Lamprey across their U.S. range are informative for prioritizing river restoration actions when paired with regional implementation plans.

Tuna is the single valuable export fishery commodity in Indonesia, and Banda Sea is one of the main tuna fishing ground which belongs to fisheries management area (FMA) 714. More recently, the northern part of the Banda Sea has been preserved for tuna conservation since January 2015. The reason for this restriction is due to a preliminary of tuna spawning ground was adopted based on the scientific finding. Although conservation area has been enacted, information on the distribution of tuna larvae as a key variable for establishing conservation area in the Banda Sea needs to be improved through scientific findings. This study aims to provide the information on the tuna larvae encompassing the spatial distribution and tuna larval development stage as an important input to establish tuna conservation area. Tuna larvae data collection were carried out from several onboard surveys for more than four decades. Those study consisted of 21 surveys by using three types of gears to collect tuna larvae. Total of 143 stations was sampled from these surveys and tuna larvae were found in 57 stations. The average length of larvae specimens was 7.36 ± 0.33 mm. In general, tuna larvae found in the Banda Sea were in the pre-flexion, flexion, and post-flexion stage and larvae in pre-flexion stage found in the nearshore area. We concluded that the result of this study confirmed the hypothesis that tuna might spawn in the Banda Sea. Therefore, to strengthen this finding, studies on tuna larvae should be conducted regularly to clarify properly that the Banda Sea is an important tuna conservation zone.

The monitoring of chum and pink salmon escapement to spawning grounds in the Amur River basin was stopped in 2009. To start it again, a proved choice of the rivers is necessary for adequate controlling of these species number, by the spawning habitats of their population groups within the basin. For this purpose, results of the monitoring in 1949–2000 and the data on human settlements in the medieval times are analyzed. The lower reaches of the Amur were anciently inhabited by the paleoasiatic Nivkh people and the upper reaches where the fall chum spawned in spring waters were inhabited by the people of Pokrovskaya archeological culture — their burial grounds coincided with the spawning area of fall chum salmon. To reach these spawning grounds, fall chum salmon migrated up to the distance of 3427 km from the Amur mouth, but since the 20th century they occur rarely in the upper reaches of the Amur, in particular within Chinese territory where they are not observed in more than 50 years; recently they spawn in spring waters at the distance 500–1200 km from the Amur mouth, mainly in its right tributaries. The reproduction centers of other two populations of chum salmon, as the summer chum and fall chum breeding in hyporheic waters, are located in the Amgun River basin (the lower left tributary of the Amur). The fourth population is the lake chum salmon breeding in spring waters of Lake Chlya located on the left bank in the lower reaches of the Amur River. Centers of reproduction for both pink salmon populations, differentiated by even and odd years of spawning, are located in the Amgun River. Several test rivers are selected within all mentioned centers of reproduction, they are: Kerbi, Duki, Im, Somnya, Aksha, Khilka, Beshenaya, Gur, Anui, Khor, Kur, and Bira. This list is similar to the list of the rivers where chum and pink salmons were monitored in the 20th century

Structure of scales is investigated for coho salmon juveniles from several sites of their feeding in the Kamchatka River basin, from Pushchino (685 km from the river mouth) to Lake Nerpichye (at the mouth). The underyearlings begin their migrations over the river basin to individual plots soon after their emerging from nests, only part of them feed and winter at the spawning grounds (between Pushchino — Milkovo). A number of coho juveniles stay for feeding and wintering in the tributaries of the Kamchatka River, some of them migrate during spring–summer floods (mid May–June) to the old water bodies in its upper and middle reaches (near Milkovo, Dolinovka, Taezhny, Dedova Yurta, Lake Kulpik) and to the floodplain and lagoon–estuary lakes (Lake Kurazhechnoye, Lake Kursin, and others), having or yet having no scales. Aboriginal coho salmon never spawn in these floodplain water bodies, but the juveniles are observed there all the year round. After wintering, seasonal growth and forming a zone of closely-spaced sclerites of scale (ZCS) — annual ring start in early May or middle May (till early June for some individuals), both for coho yearlings and older juveniles. An additional ZCS (1st type) can be formed earlier on the coho scale in some lakes because of the feeding change. Besides, another additional ZSC (2nd type) can be formed on the scale of coho yearlings (1+) in the old water bodies at Dolinovka, Taezhny, Dedova Yurta, in the lakes Kulpik, Kurazhechnoye, Kursin, and Azabachye and in the Azabachya Channel (at the Dyakonovsky Brook) in late July — August because of seasonal changes in the feeding.

The chum salmon in the Amur River basin is represented by two races, that is, summer-run and fall-run races. In the summer-run race, one population is known to use a specific type of spawning grounds. The fall-run race includes three populations with different types of spawning grounds. These four populations correspond to four eco-geographical groups separated reproductively by geographical boundaries of the geomorphological zones, as well as temporally and ecologically. In China, chum salmon has not been recorded from the spawning grounds of the Amur basin for already more than 50 years. In the Russian Federation, 100% of summer-run chum salmon spawn completely at parafluvial springs in late July and August; 77.1% of fall-run chum spawn at orthofluvial springs in September–November; 20.4% of fall-run chum spawn in the downstream part of the spawning range at parafluvial springs in September; and 2.5% of fall-run chum spawn in lakes near the Amur River mouth at orthofluvial springs in October and November.

Immigration and emigration of individuals among populations influence population dynamics and are important considerations for managing exploited populations. Lake Huron and Lake Erie walleye (Sander vitreus) populations are managed separately although the interconnecting Huron-Erie Corridor provides an unimpeded passageway. Acoustic telemetry was used to estimate inter-lake exchange and movement within St. Clair River and Detroit River. Of 492 adult walleyes tagged and released during 2011 and 2012, one fish from Tittabawassee River (Lake Huron; 1 of 259, 0.39%) and one individual from Maumee River (Lake Erie; 1 of 233, 0.43%) exchanged lakes during 2011–2014. However, both fish returned to the lake where tagged prior to the next spawning season. The one walleye from Maumee River that moved to Lake Huron made repeated round-trips between Lake Erie and Lake Huron during three consecutive years. Of twelve fish tagged in the Tittabawassee River detected in the Huron-Erie Corridor, few (n = 3) moved south of Lake St. Clair to the Detroit River. Ten walleye tagged in the Maumee River entered the Huron-Erie Corridor, and five were detected in the St. Clair River. Our hypothesis that walleye spawning in Maumee River, Lake Erie, served as a source population to Lake Huron (“sink population”) was not supported by our results. Emigration of walleye to Lake Huron from other populations than the Maumee River, such as those that spawn on in-lake reefs, or from Lake St. Clair may contribute to Lake Huron walleye populations.

Spatial variation in habitat structure is a well-recognized characteristic of lotic ecosystems. The resulting patchwork mosaic provides opportunities for growth and survival as well as mortality risks for fish migrating through these systems. Dam construction within a watershed has numerous downstream tail water effects that alter creation and evolution of habitat features used by anadromous fishes that spawn and rear in these reaches. California Central Valley Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp) are largely restricted to areas below impassable dams and these populations are undergoing widespread declines. High mortality of juvenile salmon in these reaches is thought to be a limitation to recovery. We conducted a radio telemetry study to evaluate spatial variation in juvenile Chinook Salmon (O. tschawytscha) survival and survival-environment relationships in three reaches of a Central Valley tail water. Additionally, we used mobile surveys to identify the location of last known detections to elucidate areas of disproportionate mortality. Our results indicated variation in flow and salmon size had greater explanatory power than year effects. However, relationships between flow, salmon size and survival were reach-specific indicating drivers of survival are spatially heterogeneous. Significant clumping of last known detections in the two lower reaches of the river suggests that mortality may be more frequent in these locations. Our results suggest that there is substantial spatial variation in migration mortality and both environmental conditions (flow) and salmon characteristics (size) have a strong influence on observed mortality. This information should be used to target actions that can support Chinook Salmon recovery.

The morphological and genetic heterogeneity of sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka (from both the mixed samples and the samples collected in different periods of its mass migration) catched in the mouths of the rivers of west (Ozernaya, Bolshaya, and Palana rivers) and east (Kamchatka River) costs of Kamchatka Peninsula has been analyzed. The stocks of the sockeye salmon inhabiting these river basins (including tributaries and lakes) are the largest in Asia. According to the assessment of the biological parameters and the allele frequencies at 45 loci of single-nucleotide polymorphism at the DNA level, no periodicity in the mass-spawning migration of the sockeye salmon in the rivers of the Kamchatka Peninsula’s western coast was revealed. The analysis of the sockeye salmon’s mixed samples collected from the western Kamchatka Peninsula rivers allowed identifying a group of fishes in the sample taken from the Bolshaya River that was ascertained to the lake form. With respect to the Ozernaya and Palana river samples, the phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity was not revealed. The heterogeneity revealed in the fish sample taken from the Kamchatka River’s mouth can point to a complex spatial-genetic structure of the sockeye salmon in the basin of this lake–river system. The differences between the samples collected during the mass migration through the river’s mainstream indicate the successive approach of fishes to the mouth by the local groups that spawn in the different parts of the river basin.

Loss of foundation reef-corals is eroding the viability of reef communities and ecosystem function in many regions globally. Coral populations are naturally resilient but when breeding corals decline, larval supply becomes limiting and natural recruitment is insufficient for maintaining or restoring depleted populations. Passive management approaches are important but in some regions they are proving inadequate for protecting reefs, therefore active additional intervention and effective coral restoration techniques are needed. Coral spawning events produce trillions of embryos that can be used for mass larval rearing and settlement on degraded but recoverable reef areas. We supplied 4.6 million Acropora tenuis larvae contained in fine mesh enclosures in situ on three degraded reef plots in the northwestern Philippines during a five day settlement period to initiate restoration. Initial mean larval settlement was very high (210.2 ± 86.4 spat per tile) on natural coral skeleton settlement tiles in the larval-enhanced plots, whereas no larvae settled on tiles in control plots. High mortality occurred during early post-settlement life stages as expected, however, juvenile coral survivorship stabilised once colonies had grown into visible-sized recruits on the reef by 10 months. Most recruits survived and grew rapidly, resulting in significantly increased rates of coral recruitment and density in larval-enhanced plots. After two years growth, mean colony size reached 11.1 ± 0.61 cm mean diameter, and colonies larger than 13 cm mean diameter were gravid and spawned, the fastest growth to reproductive size recorded for broadcast spawning corals. After three years, mean colony size reached 17 ± 1.7 cm mean diameter, with a mean density of 5.7 ± 1.25 colonies per m–2, and most colonies were sexually reproductive. Coral cover increased significantly in larval plots compared with control plots, primarily from A. tenuis recruitment and growth. Total production cost for each of the 220 colonies within the restored breeding population after three years was United States $17.80 per colony. A small but significant increase in fish abundance occurred in larval plots in 2018, with higher abundance of pomacentrids and corallivore chaetodontids coinciding with growth of A. tenuis colonies. In addition, innovative techniques for capturing coral spawn slicks and larval culture in pools in situ were successfully developed that can be scaled-up for mass production of larvae on reefs in future. These results confirm that enhancing larval supply significantly increases settlement and coral recruitment on reefs, enabling rapid re-establishment of breeding coral populations and enhancing fish abundance, even on degraded reef areas.

International audience; We developed the HoOS simulator (Hasty or Omniscient Shads) to assess how upstream migration and reproductive timings influence allis shad Alosa alosa (Linnaeus, 1758) temperature-dependent survival of early-life stages. We tested the influence of two reproductive timings depending on whether spawners can synchronize their spawning activity (i.e., referred to as “omniscient fish”) with optimal temperature for early-life stage survival, or simply spawn immediately after arriving on the spawning grounds (i.e., referred to as “hasty fish”). We computed the survival of early-life stages using an existing relationship that predicts the survival of allis shad from hatch to up to 14 days post-hatching according to the time series of daily water temperature at the spawning grounds. The early-stage survival rate was then calculated for each reproductive timing using a range of upstream migration speed while also considering physiological constraints to spawning adults on reproductive timing. Results indicated that the temperature-dependent survival of early-life stages relative to the migration timing by the adults was dome-shaped, confirming the hypothesis of an optimal period for reproduction across the reproductive season. The expected gain of the early-stage survival under the “omniscient” reproductive timing was highest for early arrivals of adults on the spawning grounds, lowest for intermediate arrivals, and was increasing for late arrivals. The HoOS simulator demonstrated that early and late arrivals of adults calculated as less favorable could be compensated by an “omniscient” reproductive timing. In contrast, for intermediate transit times, the two spawning timings performed the same. Our results provided modelling support that a good match of spawning activity with optimal thermal conditions is particularly crucial for the early arriving adults to maximize allis shad fitness-related outcomes (here early-stage temperature dependent survival), a causal relationship frequently claimed but rarely explored.

To predict shifts in phenology and distribution of organisms we need to understand how survival through early life stages depends on environmental conditions. Here, we present a mechanistic model of development, feeding and bioenergetics of early life stages in bluefin tuna and predict the optimal time of the year for them to be born. We find that the availability of prey, particularly nauplii, is sufficient for fast growth in tuna larvae while temperature is moderate during midsummer, but not when temperatures increase later in summer. High temperatures benefit egg and yolk-sac stages, but the metabolic needs of feeding larvae are hard to sustain during the warmest periods. Background Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) is an ecologically important species that supports a valuable commercial fishery throughout Alaska waters. Although its life history includes seasonal movement for spawning and feeding, little is known about its movement ecology. Here, we present results from the first study to use pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) to track the within-year movements of Pacific cod to understand their potential seasonal movement patterns within the Aleutian Islands. This study was part of a cooperative research project; tagging was conducted onboard commercial vessels during the winter fishing season while Pacific cod were aggregated to spawn in the central Aleutian Islands. Results Of the 36 PSATs deployed, we were able to obtain movement data from 13 Pacific cod that were at liberty between 60 and 360 days. We determined that three tagged Pacific cod were predated on by marine mammals and three were recaptured by the commercial fishery. Geolocation models were produced for four migrating individuals. Eight Pacific cod moved to a productive foraging ground near Seguam Island located 64 to 344 km from their release site and presumed spawning ground within a few weeks of their release. These movements indicate that some Pacific cod in the Aleutian Islands undergo seasonal migration. Three Pacific cod remained near their release locations (within 50 km) for more than 75 days suggesting the existence of partial migration in the population. Two Pacific cod undertook larger movements (378 and 394 km) during which they swam over deep passes and crossed several management boundaries highlighting the potential connectedness of Pacific cod throughout the Aleutian Islands. Conclusions This study provided important initial insights into the seasonal movement patterns of Pacific cod in the Aleutian Islands. Most tracked Pacific cod (77%) undertook migrations in the middle of March (64–394 km) from their winter spawning areas to summer foraging areas, but a few individuals remained in their capture location suggesting a partial migration strategy. Their ability to cross deep passes that were previously seen as potential barriers to movement has expanded our understanding of population connectivity.

The long-spined sea urchin Diadema antillarum was once an abundant reef grazing herbivore throughout the Caribbean. During the early 1980s, D. antillarum populations were reduced by > 93% due to an undescribed disease. This event resulted in a lack of functional reef herbivory and contributed to ongoing ecological shifts from hard coral towards macroalgae dominated reefs. Limited natural recovery has increased interest in a range of strategies for augmenting herbivory. An area of focus has been developing scalable ex situ methods for rearing D. antillarum from gametes. The ultimate use of such a tool would be exploring hatchery origin restocking strategies. Intensive ex situ aquaculture is a potentially viable, yet difficult, method for producing D. antillarum at scales necessary to facilitate restocking. Here we describe a purpose-built, novel recirculating aquaculture system and the broodstock management and larval culture process that has produced multiple D. antillarum cohorts, and which has the potential for practical application in a dedicated hatchery setting. Adult animals held in captivity can be induced to spawn year-round, with some evidence for annual and lunar periodicity. Fecundity and fertilization rates are both consistently very high, yet challenges persist in both late stage larval development and early post-settlement survival. Initial success was realized with production of 100 juvenile D. antillarum from ~ 1200 competent larvae. While the system we describe requires a significant level of investment and technical expertise, this work advances D. antillarum culture efforts in potential future hatchery settings and improves the viability of scalable ex situ production for population enhancement.

Using social media, the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources collected data on the occurrence of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) in 2019. Eighty‐four pink salmon were reported from 22 locations across Greenland. This comprised 76 specimens from 2019 and 8 specimens from 2013 to 2018. Of these, 12 were caught in fresh water, and a single pink salmon was from the bottom of the Nuuk Fjord near the Kapisillit River – the only known river in Greenland where the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) spawn. It is unknown if pink salmon have reproduced in Greenland waters.

Atlantic bonito, Sarda sarda, is one of the representatives of the Scombridae family in the Adriatic Sea. Larvae and juveniles have been found and described in the area, but no information has been published regarding adults spawning in the Adriatic Sea. To explore the strong possibility that Atlantic bonito are reproducing in the Adriatic Sea, 122 specimens of adult Atlantic bonito were collected from a purse seine net ‘palamidara’ over four seasons in 2017. The fork length of the analysed specimens varied from 37.5 to 60.8 cm, with a mean of 48.83 ± 5.59 cm, while total body weight varied between 742.68 and 3102.59 g, with a mean value of 1700.49 ± 543.82 g. Gonadosomatic index values showed an increasing trend from autumn (0.123 for males, 0.897 for females) until spring, while in the summer, they reached their maximum values (3.609 for males, 5.604 for females). This trend was also confirmed by histological and macroscopic analyses of gonads, which suggested that the Atlantic bonito spawning season is in the spring-summer in the Adriatic Sea. Hence, this confirms that this species is spawning in the Adriatic Sea.

Одна из причин, приводящих к расселению чужеродных видов – целенаправленная интро-дукция полезных с хозяйственной точки зрения видов животных и растений. В работе рассмотрен процесс расселения на новой части ареала акклиматизированной в бассейне Белого моря горбуши Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (Walbaum, 1792). Цель работы – уточнение границ распространения этого дальневосточного вида в пределах крупных рек европейского северо-востока России и оценка приблизительной численности мигрирующих стад. На основании результатов исследований различных лет, проведенных специалистами Института биологии Коми НЦ УрО РАН, а также данных опросов промышленных рыбаков и рыболовов-любителей, составлена карта-схема распространения горбуши. Отмечена тенденция увеличения (в направлении с запада на восток) протяженности речной части миграционного пути горбуши в бассейнах крупных рек на территории европейской части России. Для популяций горбуши, заходящих на нерест в различные водотоки, статус самовоспроизводящихся в настоящее время не подтвержден, что не позволяет говорить об отсутствии ее конкурентных взаимодействий с представителями аборигенной ихтиофауны.

Encrasicholina heteroloba belonging to the family Engraulidae is a commercially important fish species in the small-scale artisanal fisheries in Sri Lanka. Fishery, reproductive biology and gillnet selectivity pattern of E. heteroloba were assessed using the data collected from the Negombo fish landing site on the west coast of Sri Lanka from January to December 2015 in order to provide baseline information such as catch rate, total production, reproductive seasonality, size at first sexual maturity (L50) and gear selectivity pattern of this data poor fishery. E. heteroloba are mainly exploited using drift gillnets of 1.1 cm, 1.2 cm and 1.8 cm stretched mesh sizes. Females spawn throughout the year reporting a peak spawning in July. The sizes at first sexual maturity of E. heteroloba male and female are 7.40 cm and 7.45 cm, respectively. The gillnet selectivity study revealed that the optimum length (Lopt) and selection range of E. heteroloba varied with mesh sizes and estimated Lopt for 1.0 cm, 1.2 cm and 1.8 cm mesh sizes were 5.6 cm, 6.4 cm and 9.2 cm, respectively. We analysed the ratios Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca in the otoliths of 55 adults of the southern population of Mugil liza in Brazil (Paraná to Rio Grande do Sul) to investigate its coastal zone use and migratory behaviour. All individual M. liza analysed had Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca values indicating that their birth was in the marine environment, which is consistent with the southern population migration to spawn in the ocean,. Juveniles exhibited at least three coastal use and recruitment strategies (contingents): the majority (89%) of M. liza juveniles migrated toward brackish water. They entered the estuary before completing the first year of life (64%) or after (25%) their first year of life. The remaining 11% did not appear to enter brackish or freshwater water as a nursery or at any point in their life cycle. Some adults returned to the estuary after spawning in the ocean but others (of both sexes) never returned to the estuary after spawning, remaining in the marine environment. The pattern of juvenile habitat use in the Brazilian southern population of M. liza seems to be recurrent throughout the extent of its distribution as a consequence of the reproductive spawning aggregation behaviour, which mixes all contingents (with marine or estuarine preferences).

In salmonid parentage‐based tagging (PBT) applications, entire hatchery broodstocks are genotyped, and subsequently, progeny can be nonlethally sampled and assigned back to their parents using parentage analysis, thus identifying their hatchery of origin and brood year (i.e., age). Inter‐ and intrapopulation variability in migration patterns, life history traits, and fishery contributions can be determined from PBT analysis of samples derived from both fisheries and escapements (portion of a salmon population that does not get caught in fisheries and returns to its natal river to spawn). In the current study of southern British Columbia coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) populations, PBT analysis provided novel information on intrapopulation heterogeneity among males in the total number of progeny identified in fisheries and escapements, the proportion of progeny sampled from fisheries versus escapement, the proportion of two‐year‐old progeny (jacks) produced, and the within‐season return time of progeny. Fishery recoveries of coho salmon revealed heterogeneity in migration patterns among and within populations, with recoveries from north and central coast fisheries distinguishing “northern migrating” from “resident” populations. In northern migrating populations, the mean distance between fishery captures of sibs (brothers and sisters) was significantly less than the mean distance between nonsibs, indicating the possible presence of intrapopulation genetic heterogeneity for migration pattern. Variation among populations in productivity and within populations in fish catchability indicated that population selection and broodstock management can be implemented to optimize harvest benefits from hatcheries. Application of PBT provided valuable information for assessment and management of hatchery‐origin coho salmon in British Columbia.
