We present X-ray and multi-band optical observations of the afterglow and host galaxy of GRB 180418A, discovered by ${\it Swift}$/BAT and ${\it Fermi}$/GBM. We present a reanalysis of the GBM and BAT data deriving durations of the prompt emission of $T_{90}\approx$2.56s and $\approx$1.90s, respectively. Modeling the ${\it Fermi}$/GBM catalog of 1405 bursts (2008-2014) in the Hardness-$T_{90}$ plane, we obtain a probability of $\approx$60% that GRB 180418A is a short-hard burst. From a combination of ${\it Swift}$/XRT and ${\it Chandra}$ observations, the X-ray afterglow is detected to $\approx$38.5 days after the burst, and exhibits a single power-law decline with $F_{\rm X} \propto t^{-0.98}$. Late-time Gemini observations reveal a faint r$\approx$25.69 mag host galaxy at an angular offset of $\approx$0.16''. At the likely redshift range of z$\approx$1-2.25, we find that the X-ray afterglow luminosity of GRB 180418A is intermediate between short and long GRBs at all epochs during which there is contemporaneous data, and that GRB 180418A lies closer to the $E_{\gamma,{\rm peak}}-E_{\gamma,{\rm iso}}$ correlation for short GRBs. Modeling the multi-wavelength afterglow with the standard synchrotron model, we derive the burst explosion properties and find a jet opening angle of $\theta_{\rm j} \gtrsim 9-14^{\circ}$. If GRB 180418A is a short GRB that originated from a neutron star merger, it has one of the brightest and longest-lived afterglows along with an extremely faint host galaxy. If instead the event is a long GRB that originated from a massive star collapse, it has among the lowest luminosity afterglows, and lies in a peculiar space in terms of the Hardness-$T_{90}$ and $E_{\gamma,{\rm peak}}-E_{\gamma,{\rm iso}}$ planes., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables (Accepted, ApJ)

We present optical spectra of the host galaxies of the short-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 070429B and the likely short-duration with extended emission GRB 070714B. In both cases, we find a single emission line that we identify as O II lambda 3727 at z ~ 0.9. Both events are more distant than any previous short-duration GRB with a secure host association from the sub-arcsecond position of an optical afterglow. GRBs 070429B and 070714B provide strong evidence in support of our previous claims in Berger et al. that a significant fraction of short-duration hosts (>~ 33%) reside at z > 0.7. We discuss the implications of the existence this population on the energetics of short-duration GRBs, as well as on progenitor models. We present the discovery and characterisation of PTF10iya, a short-lived (dt ~ 10 d, with an optical decay rate of ~ 0.3 mag per d), luminous (M_g ~ -21 mag) transient source found by the Palomar Transient Factory. The ultraviolet/optical spectral energy distribution is reasonably well fit by a blackbody with T ~ 1-2 x 10^4 K and peak bolometric luminosity L_BB ~ 1-5 x 10^44 erg per s (depending on the details of the extinction correction). A comparable amount of energy is radiated in the X-ray band that appears to result from a distinct physical process. The location of PTF10iya is consistent with the nucleus of a star-forming galaxy (z = 0.22405 +/- 0.00006) to within 350 mas (99.7 per cent confidence radius), or a projected distance of less than 1.2 kpc. At first glance, these properties appear reminiscent of the characteristic "big blue bump" seen in the near-ultraviolet spectra of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, emission-line diagnostics of the host galaxy, along with a historical light curve extending back to 2007, show no evidence for AGN-like activity. We therefore consider whether the tidal disruption of a star by an otherwise quiescent supermassive black hole may account for our observations. Though with limited temporal information, PTF10iya appears broadly consistent with the predictions for the early "super-Eddington" phase of a solar-type star disrupted by a ~ 10^7 M_sun black hole. Regardless of the precise physical origin of the accreting material, the large luminosity and short duration suggest that otherwise quiescent galaxies can transition extremely rapidly to radiate near the Eddington limit; many such outbursts may have been missed by previous surveys lacking sufficient cadence., 18 pages, 8 figures; revised following referee's comments
