Food safety and wastage caused by fruit deterioration is a serious global problem. Effective packaging systems for extending the freshness period of fruit play a key role in food safety. In this work, we constructed an eco-friendly and flexible polysaccharide-based packaging film based on hydroxypropyl guar (HPG), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), deep eutectic solvents (DES) and anthocyanin (Anth). DES could endow polysaccharide films with multiple hydrogen bond numbers and good stability. Hydroxypropyl guar/cellulose nanocrystals/anthocyanin with 0.2 g deep eutectic solvents (HCA-DES 0.2 ) had good tensile properties, oxygen barrier properties (3.01 cm 3 /m 2 ·day·Pa), water resistance (WCA 111.97°), antibacterial (CFU ˂ 10 3 ), and transparency (55.4 %). Porphyromonas gingivalis causes various health issues through oral infections. This study investigates the antibacterial activities of food-derived dihydrochalcone flavonoids against Porphyromonas gingivalis and their mechanisms of antibacterial action through comparative transcriptome profiling. Susceptibility tests showed that two typical dihydrochalcone flavonoids (phloretin and phlorizin) had much lower minimum inhibitory concentrations (12.5 μg mL -1 and 50 μg mL -1 , respectively) than the common flavanone naringenin (100 μg mL -1 ). SEM observations and the LDH activity assay indicated obvious anomalies in cell morphology and increased cell membrane permeability, indicating the destructive effect of those compounds on the cell structure. These compounds might also induce apoptosis in P. gingivalis , as shown by the CLSM fluorescence images. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the flavonoid treatment impacted DNA function and oxidative damage. These flavonoids may activate antioxidant-related pathways that are lethal to anaerobic bacteria like P. gingivalis . Additionally, the compounds resulted in the silencing of transposition-related genes, potentially inhibiting resistance-gene acquisition and expression. Phloretin regulated fatty acid metabolism pathways, which are related to the construction and maintenance of the cell membrane. This suggests a relationship between the structure and antibacterial activities of the tested compounds that share a flavonoid skeleton but differ in the C-ring and glucose moiety. This is the first report of the antibacterial activities and mechanisms of action of food-derived dihydrochalcone flavonoids at the transcriptome level, offering a promising approach for the development of new antibacterial agents from natural products and enhancing their applicability in treating diseases associated with oral pathogens as a substitute for antibiotics.

Sodium alginate (SA) is widely used in the food, biomedical, and chemical industries due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and excellent film-forming properties. This article introduces a simple method for preparing uniform alginate-based packaging materials with exceptional properties for fruit preservation. The alginate was uniformly crosslinked by gradually releasing calcium ions triggered by the sustained hydrolysis of gluconolactone (GDL). A cinnamaldehyde (CA) emulsion, stabilized by xanthan without the use of traditional surfactants, was tightly incorporated into the alginate film to enhance its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV shielding properties. The alginate-based film effectively blocked ultraviolet rays in the range of 400-200 nm, while allowing for a visible light transmittance of up to 70 %. Additionally, it showed an increased water contact angle and decreased water vapor permeability. The alginate-based film was also employed in the preparation of coated paper through the commonly used coating process in the papermaking industry. The alginate-based material displayed excellent antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Botrytis cinerea, successfully extending the shelf life of strawberries to 7 days at room temperature. The phytohormone ethylene is the main cause of postharvest spoilage of fruit and vegetables (F&V). To address the global challenge of reducing postharvest losses of F&V, effective management of ethylene is of great importance. This review summarizes the various ethylene scavengers/inhibitors and emerging technologies recently developed for the effective removal of ethylene released, paying particular attention to the ethylene scavenger/inhibitors containing catalysts to promote the in-situ oxidation of ethylene without inducing further pollution. Packing ethylene scavengers, such as zeolite, titanium dioxide and transition metals, in a small sachet has been practically used and widely reported. However, incorporating ethylene scavenger into food packaging materials or films along with the in-situ oxidation of ethylene has been rarely reviewed. Silylated cellulose has been successfully synthesized using TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose (TEMPO-NC) from oil palm empty fruit bunch and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) in an ethanol/water medium at a low curing temperature of 40 °C as compared to those reported in the literature of above 100 °C. Confirmation of the grafting process can be seen from the new FTIR peaks at 810 cm -1 and 749 cm -1 which are attributed to the SiC stretching and SiC, and new 13 C NMR signals at 10.3, 21.7 and 42.7 ppm which are assigned to C7, C8, and C9 of the silylated TEMPO-NC. The decrease in the intensities of the cellulose peaks of C2, C3, C6 and C6' in the 13 C NMR indicates that silylation not only occurs on the hydroxyls, but more importantly on the TEMPO-NC carboxylic moiety of C6', which is postulated as being the primary factor for this successful modification. This is further corroborated by the emergence of three signals at 43, 61, and 69 ppm in the 29 Si NMR spectrum which corresponds to Si(OSi)(OR) 2 R', Si(OSi) 2 (OR)R', and Si(OSi) 3 R' units respectively. Additional evidence is provided by the EDX which shows an increase in Si weight percent of 1.94 after reaction. Fresh fruit is important for a healthy diet. However, because of their seasonal production, regional specific cultivation, and perishable nature, it is essential to develop preservation technologies to extend the postharvest shelf life of fresh fruits. Climacteric fruit adopt spoilage because of ethylene, a key hormone associated with the ripening process. Therefore, controlling ethylene activity by following safe and effective approaches is a key to extend the postharvest shelf life of fruit. In this review, ethylene control technologies will be discussed aiming for the need of developing more innovative and effective approaches. The biosynthesis pathway will be given first. Then, the technologies determining the postharvest shelf life of climacteric fruit will be described with special attention to the latest and significant published works in this field. Special attention is given to 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), which is effective in fruit preservation technologies. Finally, the encapsulation technology to improve the stability of 1-MCP will be proposed, using a potential encapsulation agent of 1-MCP, calixarene.

Acetone soluble oil palm empty fruit bunch cellulose acetate (OPEFB-CA) of DS 2.52 has been successfully synthesized in a one-step heterogeneous acetylation of OPEFB cellulose without necessitating the hydrolysis stage. This has only been made possible by the mathematical modeling of the acetylation process by manipulating the variables of reaction time and acetic anhydride/cellulose ratio (RR). The obtained model was verified by experimental data with an error of less than 2.5%. NMR analysis showed that the distribution of the acetyl moiety among the three OH groups of cellulose indicates a preference at the C6 position, followed by C3 and C2. XRD revealed that OPEFB-CA is highly amorphous with a degree of crystallinity estimated to be ca. 6.41% as determined from DSC. Sulfite pretreatment to overcome the recalcitrance of lignocelluloses (SPORL) was applied to an empty fruit bunches (EFB) for ethanol production. SPORL facilitated delignification through lignin sulfonation and dissolution of xylan to result in a highly digestible substrate. The pretreated whole slurry was enzymatically saccharified at a solids loading of 18% using a relatively low cellulase loading of 15 FPU/g glucan and simultaneously fermented without detoxification using Saccharomyces cerevisiae of YRH400. An ethanol yield of 217 L/tonne EFB was achieved at titer of 32 g/L. Compared with literature studies, SPORL produced high ethanol yield and titer with much lower cellulase loading without detoxification., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Unlabelled: This study reports the preparation and characterization of nanofibers consisting mainly of cellulose microfibrils from orange peel (OP), which is a significant byproduct of orange juice production. Three treatments (boiling, alkaline, and pectinase) were investigated with and without subsequent grinding treatment. It was possible to prepare the cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) using these methods, except for the boiling treatment with grinding. Interestingly, only pectinase and a mild-physical blender treatment without grinding produced nanofibers. The width of the nanofibers from OP was approximately 10 to 50 nm. The microfibril bundles of OP were considered to be thinner than those of commercial CNFs. Our data indicated that the removal of pectic polysaccharides and hemicelluloses covering the cellulose microfibrils was important for the preparation of nanofibers from OP. These nanofibers from OP using pectinase are proposed to be applicable as food materials, pharmaceuticals, and filters for the tractive characteristics of the sheet., Practical Application: This study demonstrates: (1) it was possible to prepare the nanofibers from orange peel using pectinase and (2) the width of the nanofibers from orange peel was approximately 10 to 50 nm. (3) Removal of polysaccharides such as pectin and hemicelluloses covering cellulose microfibrils was very important for preparation of nanofibers from OP. In seed extracts of five oilseed species, in bran extracts of three cereal species, and in seed and/or whole berry extracts of 10 berry species, the concentrations of a large number of lignans and the enantiomeric composition of selected lignans were determined. In the case of sesame and hemp seeds, the lignan content and composition of the whole seeds was compared to that of the hulled seeds. The results showed that cloudberry seeds are the third most lignan-rich food source after linseeds and whole sesame seeds, and that most of the berry species analysed were more lignan-rich than the cereal brans. The lignans are concentrated in the hull of the oilseeds and in the seeds of the berries.
