Remote sensing plays an important role for modern geography and environmental science. At the same time, it often stands on a weak epistemological foundation. Remote sensing results are mostly treated as strictly objective, context-independent artifacts. This vastly ignores the human practices that led to these results. Thus, remote sensing data are uncritically incorporated into (environmental) policy decision-making processes without understanding exactly how they were generated. Recent research has been critical of this. In a previous study, I showed that the accuracy of land use results can be increased by class aggregation, while the geographic or environmental meaning of the results suffers. I called this provocatively the "more accurate, less meaningful (MALM)" effect and showed that it exists regardless of the technical level of classification. In this study, I discuss the extent to which MALM can be remedied by choosing an appropriate quality indicator. I show that, to the largest extent conceivable, the quality indicator does not and cannot unveil the effects of socio-technical practices, which are materially inscribed into land use maps. Hence, quality indicators are unable to objectivize the effects of practices and values by the researchers. Consequently, they do not solve the MALM problem. On the contrary, I show that the explicit inclusion of geographic knowledge in quality addresses the MALM effect to the largest extent possible. This reinforces my claim that more attention needs to be paid to considering the values and practices behind remote sensing information. I discuss the results in a broad context and argue that and why critical remote sensing based on critical (physical) geography and science-and-technology studies is vital to better incorporate such results into policymaking. Parameterization of subgrid‐scale processes is a major source of uncertainty in global atmospheric model simulations. Global storm‐resolving simulations use a finer grid (less than 5 km) to reduce this uncertainty by explicitly resolving deep convection and details of orography. This study uses machine learning to replace the physical parameterizations of heating and moistening rates, but not wind tendencies, in a coarse‐grid (200 km) global atmosphere model, using training data obtained by spatially coarse‐graining a 40‐day realistic geography global storm‐resolving simulation. The training targets are the three‐dimensional fields of effective heating and moistening rates, including the effect of grid‐scale motions that are resolved but imperfectly simulated by the coarse model. A neural network is trained to predict the time‐dependent heating and moistening rates in each grid column using the coarse‐grained temperature, specific humidity, surface turbulent heat fluxes, cosine of solar zenith angle, land‐sea mask and surface geopotential of that grid column as inputs. The coefficient of determination R2 for offline prediction ranges from 0.4 to 0.8 at most vertical levels and latitudes. Online, we achieve stable 35‐day simulations, with metrics of skill such as the time‐mean pattern of near‐surface temperature and precipitation comparable or slightly better than a baseline simulation with conventional physical parameterizations. However, the structure of tropical circulation and relative humidity in the upper troposphere are unrealistic. Overall, this study shows potential for the replacement of human‐designed parameterizations with data‐driven ones in a realistic setting. Plain Language Summary: Numerical models used for projecting climate change impacts must use ad‐hoc assumptions about the effects of unresolved small‐scale processes. These assumptions contribute to uncertainty in predicting how rainfall and temperature will change in the future. Expensive fine‐grid simulations which eliminate the need for some of these assumptions are possible to run for shorter (month‐to year‐long) duration. We use such a simulation to train a data‐driven representation of the effects of processes, like clouds, which are poorly simulated by a cheaper coarse‐grid model. The data‐driven representation (a neural network) predicts rates of temperature and moisture change in each column using inputs from that grid column. This approach has been previously shown to work for models with idealized boundary conditions, but not for the realistic setting we use. When this neural network is used in a coarse‐resolution model, the realism of many global skill metrics is as good or better than a baseline model with traditional representation of small‐scale processes. However, some features are degraded, such as the time‐evolving pattern of rainfall in the tropics and humidity in the upper atmosphere. This work is a first step toward the use of data‐driven representations of unresolved processes in realistic global atmospheric models. Geography, as a discipline, is keeping pace with the overall development of scientific systems. The 20th century division between physical and human geography dispelled the integrity and unity of geography, while the division of specialties and the deep development of research topics further eroded the discipline. In anticipation of the synthesis of complexity and earth system science, and new sciences in the 21st century, and against the background of globalization and sustainable development, nature and humanities should be reintegrated in university classrooms. The influence of dualism can disappear invisibly through the standardization of academic language, construction of discipline theories, and transformation of research paradigms. In this work, a technical and social viewpoint on strategic renewable energy implementation based on tactical factors with a restrained viability, in selected places in India are presented. The argument initiates with the consideration of augmenting the available resources at a place of interest and leveraging the homegrown advantage over non-local facilities. Such undertakings can facilitate resource efficiency, by combining technological and economic rewards for the overall benefit of society unlocking the aspects of co-dependence on alternate energy forms. Nine different places in India were identified in Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Karnataka and explored employing physical survey, to identify the distinct geographies, allowing a narrative building in favor of strategic deployment. This mapping of resources, when applied to the local conditions by using a stochastic model developed as a direct output from the work. The result of the survey expresses that nominated people’s opinion is heavily skewed toward bioenergy and solar by almost a factor of 2, in comparison to wind, small hydro, geothermal, and hydrogen. Respondents recorded about 80% urban and 25% rural for solar, followed by bioenergy at 68% urban and 46% rural. Geothermal and hydrogen received the least (<20% urban, <5% rural). In the end, the study opens a wider scope for judgment-making for policymakers, to distinguish between the approach for all-inclusive and preferential renewables deployment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The last decade has seen growing interest across human geography in the concept of the unconscious as a key terrain for thinking social life. At the same time, an increasing number of geographers are exploring theorisations of the unconscious that push beyond the subject-predicate tendencies of much psychoanalytic thinking, addressing material and non-representational forces that exceed the confines of a human-centred understanding. This paper extends this work through an engagement with the philosophy of Gilbert Simondon, highlighting three key implications for geographical understandings of the unconscious. First, how it inverts the traditional emphasis on already-constituted psychic individuals to processes of psychic individuation that modulate the emergence and becoming of subjects. Second, how it shifts beyond the psychoanalytical fixation on negativity and repression through an understanding of the transductive potential of unconscious forces to create new forms of life. And third, how it opens a new way of articulating the relation of the psychic and collective as a relation of individuations that he terms the transindividual. Empirically, the paper turns to the subterranean landscape of dreams and desires in the novels of Haruki Murakami, exploring how literary encounters might open a space for thinking the transductive forces of the transindividual unconscious. Experiential learning is recognized as a high-impact educational practice. Fieldwork is an important component of the geographic tradition. When implemented using an inquiry-based approach, fieldwork can be a highly effective form of experiential education. However, many geography instructors are dissuaded from implementing inquiry-based fieldwork because of logistical challenges. Here, a modular, semester-long fieldwork design is presented, involving inquiry-based research on local streams. This framework has been successfully implemented twice in undergraduate classes. A total of 37 undergraduate students did physical habitat assessments and water-quality monitoring on urban streams in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. Quantitative and qualitative anonymous student evaluations and student work products provide preliminary support for the approach's effectiveness in enhancing student learning. The practical advantages of the presented fieldwork design are that it is less costly in time and money than fully field-based courses, it breaks up a large class into more manageable group sizes, and it alleviates some of the common concerns about accessibility, equity, and risk management. While still needing to be systematically assessed, the pedagogical benefits potentially include development of critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, interpersonal, and affective skills. In this brief contribution, I reflect on some of the newest tendencies and fashions in social theoretic thinking in the field of human geography and beyond. Human geography attracts its scholars, thinkers and audiences with its engagement to contribute to a better environment and a better world. As such human geography as a discipline is a political project, with high societal relevance. In this human engagement with the world around us, the relationship between the human and the spatial environment is of central importance, and thorough scientific conceptual reflections are crucial in a discipline that is not just political but also scientific. Geographers traditionally excel in sophisticated conceptualisations of our physical and social environment but have rather neglected the conceptualisation of the other end of this relationship, the human being and becoming. In the current debate on the various versions of posthumanism, we observe that one easily resorts to rather simplistic categorisations and qualifications of what we envision as posthuman utopias or dystopias, with sometimes also dangerous ethical consequences. In this contribution, I try to argue that, if we dig a bit deeper, with the help of the philosophical anthropology of Helmuth Plessner we gain a more nuanced and sustainable as well as ethically responsible view of the role of the posthuman self in the geography of today's world. Anthropology and physical geography were among Kant's most popular and longest running courses. He intended them to give his students the world-knowledge [Weltkenntniß] that they needed in order to be effective world-citizens [Weltbürgern]. Much of this indoctrination amounted to teaching Occidental white men, Kant's default audience, to perceive themselves as uniquely entitled and obliged to work as agents of human progress on the assumption that they, thanks to their geographic location on Earth, were naturally formed as an exceptional race. I trace this perception to a combination of Kant's lectures and publications. He already indicated it in some of his works from the 1750s and 1760s. He subsequently fleshed it out through a theory of race based on his geography course in conjunction with a pure moral theory, a pragmatic anthropology that complements the moral theory, and a theory of education that builds on those three. Carl Sauer's The Morphology of Landscape is a foundational text for cultural geography. Instead of focusing on culture, however, this article pays special attention to Sauer's use of phenomenology. Through the lens of German Theory, I detail the debate around areal realism in German geography amongst Carl Ritter, Julius Fröbel, Alexander von Humboldt, and Alfred Hettner leading up to The Morphology of Landscape. By reconstructing the onto-epistemological problem that Sauer's invocation of phenomenology responds to, I extrapolate a Sauerian phenomenology for both physical and human geography. This article studies the Taiqing jinye shendan jing 太清金液神丹經 (Grand Clarity Scripture of Divine Elixir Made from Liquid Gold, hereafter Scripture of Liquid Gold), attributed to Ge Hong 葛洪 (283–343 CE), to examine the intersection of religion, science and medicine in China. Passages from the Scripture of Liquid Gold describe the healing powers of drugs and highlight ways medieval writers imagined the transmission of medical knowledge, as well as the specific places producing potent substances. The text provides a view that contravenes standard narratives of foreign medical migration that vector into China via Buddhist channels. As such, we argue that it provides a novel view of medical migration in its time period. As one of the early sources on physical geography and trade goods from Southeast Asia, it is an important resource for early knowledge of the region and is one of the earliest examples of possible Daoist religio-technical continuities between the regions. It takes real talent and hard work to scrutinize films in this manner, but by doing so Sadlier identifies things that film reviewers, and even scholars, might miss. Increasing attention has been given to geographical contributions to cultural heritage in religion. However, comparative quantitative research remains scarce. As a first attempt, this study presents findings from comparative spatial and statistical analyses of the geographical distribution and features of mountains in China sacred in Taoism and Buddhism. Because both have strong orientations to natural environments, we find more similarities than differences between them, even though the two religions have different origins, philosophies, and doctrines. The results empirically support the influences of Taoism on Buddhism in China, findings that supplement current understandings of Buddhism in China in terms of the geographical dynamics of integration and sinicisation of Chinese culture. The findings also enrich current debates, including in this journal, emphasising the importance of environmental symbols in studies on geography and religion. Connecting humanity with physical geography in light of the changes, including grief, being wrought in the Anthropocene, we hope to inspire more geographically grounded and methodologically eclectic studies on religions. Based on Carl O. Sauer's taped reflections on his own academic life, this paper outlines and offers a personal appreciation of Sauer's intellectual history. I argue that Sauer's intellectual life can be conceptualized as three dialectical developmental stages: (1) the Warrenton-Calw stage , marked by general education in his hometown environment; (2) the Chicago-Ann Arbor stage , marked by steep intellectual growth and expansion of his knowledge in geography as an academic subject; and (3) the Berkeley Stage , characterized by his Mexican field work and establishment of his own form of historical-cultural geography. This paper argues that Sauer's own intellectual curiosity, rather than any external influences, was the primary factor behind his scholarly progression to successive stages. Driven by his own curiosity, Sauer covered a wide range of research themes covering physical geography, use of fire in the development of landscape, theoretical discussion of the landscape morphology, and prehistorical agricultural origins and dispersals. The geographical boundary or limit outlines the spatial expansion of a specific feature, being a scale dependent notion. In geography, there are different types of boundaries, such as natural and artificial, physical and political, clearly-positioned defined lines or fuzzy and complex belts, determined through traditional methods or quantitative approaches. Clear delineation of the boundary is important for fully reveal and representation of the feature area. The aim of our study is to propose a GISbased multi-criteria analysis in order to define the boundary at fine scale between two landform units: Curvature Carpathians and Subcarpathians placed between Prahova and Teleajen rivers. Various natural and anthropic criteria are selected, reclassified, homogenized and quantified, and then combined and converted into a spatial model providing a qualitative-quantitative integrated approach for boundary delineation. The resulted spatial model is classified in five gradually classes from Subcarpathians to Carpathians, allowing the drawing of boundary at high spatial resolution. Muslim Arabs excelled in various sciences since the beginning of the Islamic era, and geography had a special interest on their part, as great efforts were made to study and develop Arab geographical thought. Geographers are often asked “what is geography?”, and the number of answers to this question nearly equals the number of geographers. We (and others) argue that it is the spatial dimension that makes geography different, and that to do geography, one must communicate spatial information. Cartography is one of the key forms of spatial communication. However, the geographic literature often lacks maps. To examine this, we reviewed 67 years of the Annals of the American Association of Geographers to test any trends in the presence/absence of maps, the influence of editors, and how any trends related to changes in the field of geography. On average, 24% of the papers published did not contain maps. Roughly speaking, papers from the 1950s, mid-1970s through the 1980s, and from 2000–present were the least likely to contain maps. Papers in the 1960s, early 1970s, and mid-1990s contained the most. The influence of editors on the percentage of papers published without maps was significant, but weak. We found a relationship between the changes in numbers of papers with maps and broad changes in the field of geography. There was a slight increase in the number of publications that included maps during the quantitative revolution after World War II, which declined during the discipline’s shift toward social and critical geography in the 1960s and 1970s. In 2001, the format of the Annals changed from publishing all the articles in one section to dividing the publications in four thematic sections with different editors. From 2001–2017, the Physical Geography and Environmental Sciences section was the most likely to have maps (11.9% of articles without maps) while the People, Place, and Regions section was the least likely (47.7% without maps). Overall, the changes in the percentage of articles without maps can largely be explained by changes in the fields of geography and cartography—up to about the year 2000. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines seven tourist places in the Spanish province of Alicante, where it is possible to identify a greater presence or agency of LGBTQ+ communities. They are also coastal enclaves highly appreciated by heteronormative society and thus crossed by spatial conflicts and exclusion policies that allow their reality to be approached from an intersectional perspective. Our study reveals that, in addition to the gradients of dispossession and discrimination that non-normative inhabitants suffer transversally in society, the queer condition, upon intersecting with the class factor, causes differentiated experiences in terms of segregation, harassment and homophobic violence. In each location, the idiosyncrasy of the physical and cultural geography suggests specific analytical methodologies, mostly qualitative, which, together with an effort of queer pedagogy, invite us to reflect on other ways of producing and sharing knowledge. It aims to be the go-to peer-reviewed journal for those interested in the latest research in all areas of environmental geography. It will publish perspectives papers, progress reports, and themed interventions, covering a wide range of topics within the discipline. The article focuses on Katerina Palthe's journey in geography, starting with childhood exposure to a world map and progressing through university studies, which led to a Master of Geography and later an agricultural science degree. Objective: The objective of the current study was to determine if patients of a large health care system in Detroit who self-identify as food insecure live further away from healthy grocery stores compared with food secure patients. Second, we explored whether food insecurity and distance to healthy grocery stores are related to ecological measures of vehicle availability in the area of residence.Design: A secondary data analysis that uses baseline data from a pilot intervention/feasibility study.Setting: Detroit, Michigan, USA.Participants: Patients of Henry Ford Health System were screened for food insecurity to determine eligibility for a pilot intervention/feasibility study (i.e. Henry's Groceries for Health), conducted through a collaboration with Gleaners Community Foodbank of Southeastern Michigan. Only patients residing in Detroit city limits (including Highland Park and Hamtramck) were included in the secondary analysis. Of the 1,100 patients included in the analysis, 336 (31 %) were food insecure.Results: After accounting for socio-demographic factors associated with food insecurity, we did not find evidence that food insecure patients lived further away from healthier grocery stores, nor was this modified by ecological measures of vehicle access. However, some neighbourhoods were identified as having a significantly higher risk of food insecurity.Conclusions: Food insecure patients in Detroit are perhaps limited by social and political determinants and not their immediate neighbourhood geography or physical access to healthy grocery stores. Future research should explore the complexity in linkages between household socio-economic factors, socio-cultural dynamics and the neighbourhood food environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Opics related to the nature of geographic knowledge and the pathway to acquire geographic knowledge have been debated and contested especially during periods of major social and technological change (Harvey [6]; Sayer [10]; Liverman et al. [8]; Sui and Kedron [16]). Discussion of principles in geography and GIScience will also further improve methodological rigour in the context of reproducibility and replicability and stimulate further empirical testing through the open science paradigm, which is more urgent and relevant than ever with growing the spread of mis/disinformation. In this paper, we chart the changing character of Australian geographical research based on trends in publications in the Australian Geographer. Using data starting from the journal's inception in 1928 until 2018, we document changes in geographical research reflecting broader trends in the evolution of the discipline. We argue that a long-term perspective, harnessing an empirical approach to data produced over a 90-year publication history, enables geographers to better understand the discipline. Accordingly, we track 'who' is doing geography and 'where' these studies take place. We also ask 'how' geography is being done vis-à-vis physical/human and combined studies. Our analysis of the publication history of the Australian Geographer over the last 90 years aims to provoke broader reflection on the progression of geographical research and the discipline's identity. This editorial introduces a Classics Revisited collection within which a range of invited authors have used Louise Bracken and Emma Mawdsley's paper, '"Muddy glee": Rounding out the picture of women and physical geography fieldwork', as inspiration for reflection and to broaden the debate around geography fieldwork. Published in 2004, 'Muddy glee' sought to engage with feminist critiques of the masculinist endeavour of fieldwork, whilst trying to reclaim some of the more nuanced, positive aspects of women in fieldwork. This editorial introduces the classic paper, reflects on fieldwork access today and the role of the RGS‐IBG in helping to shape good practice and briefly introduces the collection of papers that together form the special section. According to Araujo (2021), the concepts and conceptions about geological-geomorphological dynamics are often presented in textbooks superficially, without deepening and without a critical analysis. This research aims to propose unconventional methodologies to fill the gaps related to the contents of Geomorphology and Geology found in the textbook "Geography Contexts and Networks" by Silva, Olic and Lozano (2016) corresponding to the 1st grade of high. The methodology used is qualitative/descriptive, case study and content analysis. The study was motivated by the complexity, misconceptions and high degree of abstraction that the physical contents of Geography usually present in didactic works. It justifies the choice of theme due to the need to evaluate the natural physical contents present in textbooks, and to propose unconventional methodologies to fill the gaps present in these materials, being an important work for teachers, serving as a suggestion to address issues related to physical geography, notably Geomorphology and Geology in a meaningful, integrated and applied way in order to achieve teaching-learning and geographic reasoning of the students. It is confirmed that the insertion of digital software (games and the GIS Google Earth), models, cinema and comic books (HQs), are beautiful examples of how the teacher may be working with some concepts that present gaps or inconsistencies in the textbook "Geography Contexts and Networks". The aim of the article is to present the chronology of activities that led to the emergence of the discipline 'socio-economic geography and spatial management' in the new classification of science in Poland which has been in force since 2018. The path of emergence of the discussed discipline is analysed from the standpoint of one of the participants of this process. The article also presents positive and negative consequences of implementing this classification in the context of two different structural models of geography as a science. Among positive consequences one can mention (1) preservation of the name 'geography' on the list of scientific disciplines, and (2) a favourable formal and legal 'empowerment' of socio-economic geography in the system of the organisation and evaluation of science in Poland. Among the greatest threats one can see (1) a reduction in the importance of socio-economic geography in favour of spatial management, and (2) the organisational disintegration of some geographical communities, institutions and research units. However, there are also attempts at the reintegration of geography around two of its basic segments, i.e. physical geography and human geography. In the author's opinion, future activities should focus on the means to strengthen realistically (and not only declaratively) the position of the new discipline and its constituent subdisciplines against other scientific disciplines. This paper is a provocation and reflection on some of the methodological tensions and opportunities I encountered in trying to "get at" gender in my research on the everyday gendered geographies of physical activity. Situated in a feminist methodology, I designed my study on gender and gym environments to include multiple forms of data (interviews, drawings, journals) to foster a participant‐centred research process by offering diverse forms of expression. Yet, there were moments where my feminist commitment to recognise participants' agency in how they articulated their gendered experiences was stymied by seeming self‐contradictions throughout their multi‐modal narratives, as well as by my researcher interpretations of gender. In this post‐mortem, I consider what incongruities in the ways some participants spoke about gender within and across data types tell us about gender as a concept. I illustrate how there is methodological opportunity in using multiple creative methods as a check for rigour in the form of "catalytic validity," or awareness‐raising among research participants, which is consistent with socially transformative feminist geographical aims. The paper states that geodiversity is the abiotic complement to biodiversity, and is considered to be the elements associated with the abiotic environment, e.g. geological diversity, geomorphodiversity, pedodiversity, hydrodiversity and climodiversity. Geoheritage is considered as the geological heritage of a site, but is here presented as the abiotic heritage of a site, and is related to geological heritage, geomorphoheritage, pedoheritage, hydroheritage and climoheritage. Thus, it is possible to talk about geological sites, geomorphosites, pedosites, hydrosites and climosites. Geodiversity and geoheritage are strongly linked to geology. The analysis of regional convergence often stays at the level of documentation, with limited attention placed on the drivers of convergence/divergence dynamics. This article offers a systematic analysis of this, examining the role of first-nature (location, proximity, physical geography) and second-nature geography (economic structure, agglomeration, economic potential) in accounting for regional synchronicity in growth trajectories (stochastic convergence). Utilising historical data for Greece at the prefectural level and up-to-date time-series econometric techniques, we test for the presence of stochastic convergence in the country over three decades prior to the crisis; identify the pairs of regions which exhibit co-movement in their growth dynamics; and examine the covariates of this. Our results unveil a picture of limited-only and cluster-like convergence, driven predominantly by factors related to accessibility, sectoral specialisations, labour market dynamism, market potential and selected locational characteristics. This supports two propositions: (a) convergence is an endogenous process, related to shared and incongruent characteristics of regions; and, by implication, (b) regional disparities are structural (in the sense that they are linked to economic and spatial structure) and thus require targeted policies in order to be addressed. Researchers across an array of disciplines are focused on measuring the potential of specially designed programs – sport, movement, and/or arts-based – for supporting the recovery of youth in contexts of conflict and disaster. Yet, few such projects engage youth directly to capture their experiences of trauma and recovery, and too many continue to assume youth are 'victims' requiring 'our' (adult-designed) versions of support. This paper seeks to move scholarship, policy and practice beyond the 'deficit model' by providing space for local voices and prioritizing the creative grassroots strategies devised by youth to support their own recovery. Drawing upon three case studies and a multi-method approach (interviews with digital ethnography) it reveals the social and cultural benefits of grassroots informal sporting activities, particularly in providing youth with opportunities for valued forms of physical self-expression and escapism, social connectedness, and possibilities to redefine physical and emotional geographies. In so doing, this paper reveals informal sports as critical resources taken up by youth within situations and systems where their specific needs are too often marginalized. It also highlights the opportunities in alternative methodologies – i.e. longitudinal research, sustained digital observations – for building relationships and amplifying the voices of youth in conflict and post-disaster geographies. This paper analyses the notion of Mediterranean 'Southern Thought' discussed by Italian philosopher Franco Cassano (1943–2021), through the lenses of critical geographical and geopolitical scholarship, drawing upon the concept of 'costal indentation' as addressed by one of its main interpreters, anarchist geographer Elisée Reclus (1830–1905). Southern Thought is increasingly associated with decolonial and post-development approaches, especially with notions such as degrowth, and the 'pluriverse'. It is first and foremost understood as an anti-dogmatic philosophy that opposes all fanaticisms and narrow (political, cultural or ethnic) chauvinisms, including the dogmas of development, market, speed and productivity coming from (neo)colonial 'Norths' to foster pluralism and mutual listening. Connecting and putting into dialogue different strands of scholarship in critical geopolitics and decoloniality, I first contend that Southern Thought can help enlarging geographical notions of plural Souths to avoid essentialising any single notion of 'Global South', or 'Southern Theory', which would imply the risk of reproducing new dogmatisms. Then, I argue that Southern Thought can engage productively with geography, and especially with scholarship in critical geopolitics addressing global crises such as the migrant and refugees one, in learning from these plural 'Souths' (including Southern Europe and the Mediterranean) to find alternative models to that of the nation-state based on territorial sovereignty and bound to territorial 'traps'. In this first issue of 2021, we are pleased to publish the 2019 I SJTG i lecture on "GIS research to address tensions in geography" (Yuan, 2021a), based on an April 2019 plenary presentation at the American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting held in Washington, DC. This is a reflection on Tivers' (1978) paper from a physical geography point of view. I discuss four elements of the original paper: the increase in women in the field of geography, fieldwork, family role, and "everyday sexism." Today, the preferences of the tourists have been directed towards the fields that have not been touched before, with the potential of physical and human geography, and have rich resources in terms of alternative tourism activities. In recent years, the arrival of tourists coming to our country from the coastal areas that appeal to mass tourism to various destinations in the interior of our country can be seen as a result of these changing tourist preferences. The Black Sea Region has many destinations that can respond to changing tourist preferences, in Turkey. Gümüşhane province, located in the Eastern Black Sea Region of the Black Sea Region, is one of our provinces that stand out in terms of alternative tourism with its natural and cultural touristic elements. Altınpınar (Limni) Lake, which is located within the borders of Altınpınar Village of Torul district of Gümüşhane province, and its immediate surroundings, is one of the potential areas of the region in terms of alternative tourism. With this research, it has been aimed to determine the recreation - tourism potential of Altınpınar Lake by taking into consideration the increasing tourism demand for the Black Sea Region in the recent years and to present it to the use of local people and tourists with a protection-oriented planning. The data of the research was obtained from the literature, the study report obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Nature Conservation and National Parks 12th Regional Directorate and field studies conducted in the region. In this context, firstly, physical and human geography features of Altınpınar (Limni) Lake and its immediate surroundings are revealed. In addition, recreation potential of Altınpınar Lake and its nearby area was determined by using the Forest Recreation Evaluation (ORPD) method developed by Gülez (1990). While doing this process, suggestions were made for the probability of the nature park and the planning of the area in which this lake is located as a touristic destination based on the similarities of the Altınpınar Lake with the Zigana-Limni Lake at a nearby location. As a result of the field studies and evaluations made according to the Gülez method, the recreation potential value of Altınpınar (Limni) Lake and its nearby area was determined as 51%. In the increasing territorial competition to attract productive investments in the age of globalization, mountain areas have a role to play, if they wish to find new (exogenous) resources to diversify their economy and to develop sustainably in the future. This means that they have either to be, or to become attractive. Attractiveness for investments is an issue rarely studied with respect to mountain areas. This paper casts light on the attractiveness of the Italian Alpine provinces, using quantitative and qualitative data coming from a research on the stated locational preferences of entrepreneurs in Italy. According to the findings, it is not said that mountain areas are unattractive, due to their characteristics in terms of physical geography and accessibility. Instead, a different perspective on geography itself (Alpine areas bordering with foreign countries), and the role of the government, can make even marginal areas like mountain areas rather attractive for investments. Therefore, policy-makers should identify and strengthen all possible locational advantages that can strengthen the attractiveness of these areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Stellenbosch University boasts a long history of geography teaching and research. Notably, physical geography only gained traction in research only in the 1960s at Stellenbosch University and would again all but disappear from the research agenda of the department in the late 1990s and early 2000s, to be, in a sense, replaced by environmental geography. This continued until the mid 2010s, where efforts have been made to strengthen the sub-discipline once more. This paper attempts to trace the history and growth of physical and environmental geography in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, acknowledge the contributions made by individuals to the subject area and concludes by highlighting some implications for the future growth, teaching and research of physical and environmental geography. This paper sought to perform a spatiotemporal analysis of the bibliographic production of articles published in the journal GEOGRAFIA between the years 1976 and 2019 (44 years). The aim was to generate subsidies to assess the dynamics and frequency of scientific production in Geography by areas and subthemes, in order to verify the spatial distribution and the origin of the knowledge produced and disseminated at the national and regional level. For that, the complete collection of the journal was used as a basis for reading and empirical evaluation of the articles, distributed by research areas and subthemes in Geography and in the institutional origin of the authors. Thus, graphs and maps of distribution and intensity were created to support the analysis of the academic production of the journal. The results showed the regularity and frequency of the various themes in the area of Physical and Human Geography addressed over time and the intense spatial heterogeneity of scientific production, mostly originating from institutions located in the main cities of central-south Brazil. This article makes visible the unseen and obscured cycling routes of on-demand, app-based food couriers in Edinburgh, Scotland, drawing from qualitative research (twenty-five interviews with riders), original digital data gathered through smartphone apps, and a custom-made mapping workflow developed in collaboration with student researchers and used by Deliveroo riders to track and map their delivery work. Qualitative research among riders suggests the presence of 'two Edinburghs,' or a city divided not only by its physical geography but by the navigation of risks. Riders actively discuss the strategies they use to negotiate the city and stay safe while working, and the geolocalised digital data they produce reveal the ways in which such negotiations become collective navigations throughout the city. By exploring, visualising, and mapping these navigations, this article uses unique data to illustrate how on-demand food couriers create, modify, and reproduce social space in the city. We suggest that forms of urban platform hacking, when coupled with qualitative work, constitute a powerful instrument to challenge top-down urban narratives that foreground the integrated, optimised flow of resources and labour as a hegemonic vector in the city. Energy geographers have characterized energy as a borderland topic because of its ability to straddle and interconnect different geographic concepts and debates. In this review, we evaluate how the borderland of energy geographies has been emerging in recent years by analyzing scholarship on energy published in top geography journals and a leading energy studies journal, Energy Research & Social Science. In part 1 of our review, we evaluate how the borderland of energy geographies is evolving by mapping the geographic range of empirical studies, the processes and types of energy systems being researched and the key geographic concepts/theories engaged across the four main sub‐fields of geography. We find that energy geographies scholarship has primarily centered on the Global North, remains focused on the extractive and production phase of energy development and is evolving across and within three of the four sub‐fields of geography. Energy transitions, governance, justice, space, and landscape are key topics and concepts examined. Notable underrepresentations include a relative lack of energy geographies scholarship within physical geography, as well as limited studies that engage geographic concepts to study the transportation sector, unconventional energy development and the food‐energy‐water nexus. In part 2, we identify three broad research themes to expand the frontier of energy geographies: (a) geographies of energy knowledge production, particularly indigenous knowledge; (b) materializing energy, especially through engaging political‐industrial ecology; and (c) advancing geographic thought by critically assessing how studying energy advances/challenges/transforms core geographic concepts and debates. Collectively, our review demonstrates that energy geographies have established firm footing within and across geography. Deepening engagement with emerging trends elsewhere in geography and the social sciences will not only help to better conceptualize what a geographic perspective on energy means but will also help to make clearer sense of the rapid economic, social, environmental, and political transformations currently underway within the global energy system.
