Abstract Deep-sea microorganism research has become a hot topic in life science, owing to its special value in high pressure and low temperature environment. If not kept the in-situ low temperature and high pressure, it will cause the microorganism to lose its activity and lead to a waste of resources. A freeze-sediments valve presents a promising solution to maintain the low temperature and high pressure in situ, improve the success rate of sampling and shorten the sampling time. A series of experiments were conducted to characterize the freeze-sediments valve, including the sampling time without leakage, adaptation to different sediments and the effect of the length, etc. Most important of all, temperature change of sediments is observed in all experiments. Experimental results indicated that the freeze-sediments valve was formed in 5 min without leakage and the freeze-sediments valve could be applied to different sediments without limitations on sediments type and mineral content. Considering the pressure retaining capacity and formation time of freeze-sediments valve, it was found that the freeze-sediments valve with a length of 60–80 mm has good pressure retaining capacity whose value was 41.3–48.4 Mpa and short formation time which was 5 min. Precooling the sampler could be used to shorten the sampling time in the actual environment application. This sampling technique can play a vital role in maintaining in-situ low temperature at −2 to −4 ° Celsius in all the experiments. According to the tests, the sampling technique based on the freeze-sediments valve had the potential to solve the problem of keeping in-situ temperature, low sampling success rate and long sampling time in the future. The Late Cenozoic East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) enhancement has been attributed to several factors, such as uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, retreat of the Paratethys Sea, and global cooling related to polar ice volume increment. However, the fundamental forcing factors remain enigmatic due to the absence of long and continuous climate records and sensitive indicators. Here we reanalyzed the published grain-size record of Sikouzi fine sediments in the western Chinese Loess Plateau through end-member (EM) modeling. The results indicate that EM 2 with grain-size peaks between 10–100 μm decreased in content from 20.1 to 17 Ma and stepwise increased from 17 to 0.07 Ma during the following six stages (17–15 Ma, 15–12 Ma, 12–8 Ma, 8–6 Ma, 6–4 Ma and 4–0 Ma). Such varying trends can be successively correlated in seven stages with the integrated benthic δ18O record, implying that global warming weakened the EAWM from 20.1 to 17 Ma and global cooling has stepwise strengthened the EAWM since 17 Ma. Therefore, we conclude that global temperature change played a major role on the evolution of EAWM during the Neogene period. By contrast, Late Cenozoic palaeogeographic reorganization caused by uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and retreat of the Paratethys Sea contributed less to the evolutionary evolution of EAWM. Spectral analysis of the EM 2 data first provided direct evidence of orbitally influenced deposition in the study area and thus the EAWM variations during the Neogene period. The 100-kyr period became weak since ~10 Ma, possibly due to the decrease in sensitivity of a more stable, continental-scale ice sheet in Antarctica to local insolation forcing, deserving further investigation. Hydraulic scour is one of the major causes of bridge and embankment failure during typhoon-induced or monsoon-induced floods in steep intermittent rivers in Taiwan. In this study, field data for sediment load and riverbed scour, measured in gravel-bed and sand-bed reaches between 2003 and 2013 are analyzed to determine their differences under nonequilibrium sediment-transport conditions. The riverbed scouring potential was extremely high during the fast-rising stage of a large flood in the bimodal gravel-bed reach. By contrast, the unimodal sand-bed reach with a higher suspended load typically demonstrated a lower scouring rate, although it was still higher than that of a perennial river. Existing bridge-scour formulas suitable for intermittent rivers were examined by separating short-term general scour and localized scour. A maximum general scour-depth formula is developed in this study for use as a potential tool for emergency evacuations and bridge closure purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of sandification process was studied, by monitoring the changes of sediment characteristics, at marsh-sandy land intersections in China's Songnen region. A series of sediment collection plates were deployed in the region; after one year, sediments in these plates were analyzed for changes of mass and chemical characteristics. The sediment flux and the sand content of the sediments decreased with the increasing longitudinal distance between the sampling site and the centre line of a sand dune. The mean sediment flux was 29±14 kg m−2 yr−1 and 0.6±0.3 kg m−2 yr−1 in the sandy land and marsh, respectively. Strong, positive correlations were found between the concentrations of organic matter, total nitrogen, P, Fe, Ti, V and Zr, all of which were also negatively correlated with the sand content. The concentrations of organic matter, total nitrogen, P, Fe, Ti, V and Zr in the marsh sediment samples were all significantly greater than the corresponding concentrations of the sandy land (p<0.001). Sand content and Ti, V and Zr concentrations all proved to be valid indicators of sandification intensity, and they showed that the marsh could be divided into three distinct zones. Sand expansion extended about 88 m into the marsh. The mean sand content in the sediments of the sandy land was 91% and then 64% in the marsh, which in turn was higher than that of marshes outside the influence of sandification, suggesting that the marsh in the marsh-sandy land transitional area has already undergone extensive sandification in the past. The article offers information on the accumulation of gas hydrates at the bottom of the sea during sequential deposits of sendiments with different transport properties. It states that geophysical studies have revealed more than 200 hydrate manifestations in the World Ocean, mainly in the offshore zones where favorable conditions for the generation of biogenic and thermogenic gas are realized. It mentions that accumulation of gas hydrates occurs during the deposition, burying, and compaction of sediments. It highlights that filtration in the sediment medium is the most powerful mechanism of gas supply into the stable zone of gas hydrates.

This paper discusses the influence of sedimentary environment and geological setting on geotechnical and physical properties of resulting sedimentary deposits. For this study, two different geological settings were considered, one is a river-fed and the other is a glacier-fed sedimentary environment. For both sedimentary environments, various geotechnical properties were considered and compared. These include plasticity, activity, compressibility, undrained shear strength and sensitivity. Results indicate that physical and geotechnical properties of sediments deposited in these two settings are significantly different. These differences are then interpreted in terms of the various mechanisms involved in submarine slope failure initiation in river-fed versus glacier-fed sedimentary environments. Coral reef calcareous sediment, a special category of rock-soil material, has representative geological structure and environmental characteristics. It is widely distributed in shallow areas of the tropical ocean; therefore the exploration instruments and technologies for engineering geology studies of coral reef calcareous sediments are very different from those used in land or deep-sea. Obtaining undisturbed cores from the Holocene unconsolidated stratum of coral reefs has been a key problem in the field of marine geology and environment surveying. The authors have designed a novel floating drilling platform equipped with a drilling machine, and successfully achieved undisturbed cores from both reef flats (with water depth 0.5 to 2 m) and a enclosed lagoon (with water depth 2-12 m) of Yongshu Reef (9°32-9°42 N, 112°52-113°04 E), southern South China Sea. Based on the detailed observation on the cores and the analysis from engineering geology, Yongshu Reef was split into reef three engineering geological zones: leading edge, reef flat (including outer reef flat, middle reef flat and inner reef flat) and lagoon. Abstract: The Alaknanda and Bhagirathi Rivers originate in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas (Garhwal) and result in high sediment yields causing flood hazards downstream of the Ganga River and high sediment flux to the Bay of Bengal. The rivers are perennial, since runoff in these rivers is controlled by both precipitation and glacial melt. In the present study, three locations in the upper reaches of the Ganga River were monitored for 1yr (daily observations of, more than >1000 samples) for suspended sediment concentrations. In addition, more than one hundred samples were collected from various locations of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi Rivers at different periods to observe spatial and temporal variations in river suspensions. Further, multi-annual data (up to ∼40yrs) of water flow and sediment concentrations were used for inferring the variations in water flow and sediment loads on longer time scales. In most previous studies of Himalayan Rivers, there has been a general lack of long term water flow and sediment load data. In the present study, we carried out high frequency sampling, considered long term discharge data and based on these information, discussed the temporal and spatial variations in water discharge and sediment loads in the rivers in the Himalayan region. The results show that, >75% of annual sediment loads are transported during the monsoon season (June through September). The annual physical weathering rates in the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi River basins at Devprayag are estimated to be 863tonskm−2 yr−1 (∼3.25mmyr−1) and 907tonskm−2 yr−1 (∼3.42mmyr−1) respectively, which are far in excess of the global average of 156tonskm−2 yr−1 (0.58mmyr−1). Abstract  A novel method for analyzing the effects that stratigraphic layers and joints have on spring locations is presented, with specific relevance for the southern Sacramento Mountains, south central New Mexico, USA. Bedrock in this heavily vegetated mountain block is mostly covered by alluvium and soil, making direct field observations difficult, and necessitating alternative methods. Elevations of a mapped geologic contact are used to produce a three-dimensional stratigraphic surface. A histogram of spring stratigraphic positions, calculated from this surface, indicates zones of preferential groundwater flow. Field measurements are combined with GIS analyses to quantify joint control on spring locations within stream valleys, and these results are compared to traditional lineament analysis. Stream valleys are parallel to joints observed in the field, and joint-parallel segments selected from digital elevation model (DEM)-mapped streams are up to 900 m in length. The abundance of springs throughout the study area decreases logarithmically with distance from these joint-parallel stream segments. Springs are more than twice as abundant within 25 m of joint-parallel stream segments compared with manually mapped lineaments from air-photos. Higher correlation with spring locations and significant time reduction by using GIS to select joint-parallel streams for lineament interpretation indicate that the method provides a good alternative to manual lineament analysis. Abstract: To mitigate erosion on abandoned fields in semi-arid ecosystems, it is important to understand how vegetation and soil properties and patterns develop after land abandonment. Our objective was to investigate the development of spatial heterogeneity in vegetation and soil properties after land abandonment. We described the vegetation composition, collected soil samples and made detailed aerial photographs for two series of abandoned fields on marl and calcrete in Southeast Spain. The images were classified into bare and vegetated patches, and spatial metrics were calculated for each site. Our results showed that recovery of vegetation and change in soil properties after land abandonment are slow and take at least 40 years in such a semi-arid environment. Succession on calcrete appeared to be faster than on marl, probably because more water is available due to the higher rock fragment cover. Organic matter, aggregate stability and electrical conductivity were all significantly higher under vegetated patches. We found a clear linear relationship between vegetation cover and most spatial metrics, which offers the possibility of upscaling spotted vegetation patterns. The results of our integrated approach to study spatial heterogeneity in vegetation and soil properties can be used to improve predictions of runoff and erosion. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Eulerian equations for the vertical flux and momentum of suspended particles in dilute sediment-laden open-channel flow in equilibrium have been derived using the two-fluid approach. Reynolds averaging has been applied in order to allow validation of individual terms with experimental data. Consideration of the various terms of the vertical momentum balance with experimental flume data indicates that the drag force has to be separated into a mean and a turbulent contribution with different timescales, respectively, the (gravitational) particle timescale and the integral turbulence timescale. A laboratory characterization of cohesive sediment has been carried out in which data obtained from standard sedimentation and rheological measurements were combined in a determination of the critical solid concentration for the detection of elasticity in a weakly cohesive suspension. The corresponding storage modulus and shear stress are very critical in any in situ rheometry of sediments, especially in the study of mud-water surface erosion in a flume. Sedimentation results showed that particle size distribution rather than surface treatment controlled the rheological behavior of the suspension while the critical solid concentration for the appearance of three-dimensional space-filling network, showing some measurable elasticity in the suspension, occurred in the region of 0.015. This parallel between the consolidation behavior and shear rheology development for the flocculating system has been established. This technique could be an adjunct to the laboratory characterization of cohesive sediments for the estimation of critical shear stress for surface erosion, especially in a typical flume experiment under water wave pressure. The original derivation of the Einstein bed-load formula involves several oversimplified assumptions concerning step length of a particle, exchange time, and probability of being lifted into motion. A modified version of the Einstein formula that relaxes these assumptions and incorporates a nonuniform sediment model is proposed and tested with both field and laboratory data. Abstract: A configuration of pebbles on the vertices of a graph is solvable if one can place a pebble on any given root vertex via a sequence of pebbling steps. A function is a pebbling threshold for a sequence of graphs if a randomly chosen configuration of asymptotically more pebbles is almost surely solvable, while one of asymptotically fewer pebbles is almost surely not. In this paper we tighten the gap between the upper and lower bounds for the pebbling threshold for the sequence of paths in the multiset model. We also find the pebbling threshold for the sequence of paths in the binomial model. Finally, we show that the spectrum of pebbling thresholds for graph sequences in the multiset model spans the entire range from to n, answering a question of Czygrinow, Eaton, Hurlbert and Kayll. We have performed the first known semicontinuous monitoring of particulate organic carbon (POC) fluxes and dissolved Si concentrations delivered to the ocean during a typhoon. Sampling of the Choshui River in Taiwan during Typhoon Mindulle in 2004 revealed a POC flux of 5.00 × 105 t associated with a sediment flux of 61 Mt during a 96 h period. The linkage of high amounts of POC with sediment concentrations capable of generating a hyperpycnal plume upon reaching the ocean provides the first known evidence for the rapid delivery and burial of POC from the terrestrial system. These fluxes, when combined with storm-derived CO2 consumption of 1.65 × 108 mol from silicate weathering, elucidate the important role of these tropical cyclone events on small mountainous rivers as a global sink of CO2. Abstract: The effects of a giant offshore dyke, Saemangeum, have been of special interest on both scientific and environmental aspects. Without any rival worldwide with regard to the ample scale and estuarine setting, the Saemangeum dyke and its vicinity (Saemangeum Area) should be an unprecedented experimental site for monitoring the consequence of the estuarine developments with dykes. In order to unravel geologic changes caused by the Saemangeum dyke, we collected a number of surface sediment samples and bathymetric profiles from a full coverage of the Saemangeum Area, and compared topography and sediment phase on the inter-annual (2002–2006, post-construction) and decadal (1982–2002, between pre- and post-construction) timescales. The dyke construction induced vigorous erosion along the dyke, especially across a few open gaps between dyke segments. These open gaps led to forming deep erosional troughs and the associated channels to the river mouth. At the same time, mild accumulation of sediments occurred on the broad seafloor offshore the erosional zone of dyke sector IV and on shoals between the erosional troughs off dyke sectors I–II. Inside the dyke, tidal flats have become expanded and aggraded with continuously discharged riverine sediments. Sands have been newly introduced into the offshore area of sector IV owing to tidal currents with an orientation forced to be parallel to sector IV (NE–SW), reinforced by high waves during winter. By contrast, the expanded sandy area off sectors I–II resulted from redistribution of pre-existing sands without any new input from offshore. As a whole, the concentrated erosion and sandy-seafloor expansion offshore represent the man-made influences triggered by the Saemangeum dyke. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A new planktonic foraminiferal taxon, Hillsella hillsi n. g., n. sp., is described from the upper Turonian-Coniacian sediments of the Caribbean region. The new taxon is included within the Family Hedbergellinae Loeblich and Tappan 1961 and is characterized by a cancellate test wall, which is described for the first time from below the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary. The Upper Cretaceous Chalk hills of the South Downs form the southern flank of the Wealden anticline in south-east England, with older Wealden and Purbeck sediments exposed at its core. With prominent chalk escarpments on each side of it, this major structure is up to 70 km wide, and extends eastwards for over 200 km from eastern Hampshire to the area around Boulogne-sur-Mer in Northern France, dissected by the English Channel. In this study, three dimensional quadrant analysis of bursting process was used to recognize the susceptible regions for sediment entrainment and deposition at the bed of a vortex chamber. From the analysis, it was found that two dimensional quadrant analysis in unable to find the turbulent coherent structure of flow near the bed of the vortex chamber. Therefore, a new method based on three dimensional bursting process is introduced in this study to define the turbulent flow structure. Based on the new methodology in this study, the bursting event is divided into eight different cube zones according to three dimensional velocity fluctuations. It was realized that, four cube zones interactions are toward the central orifice of the vortex chamber and four cube zones interactions are toward the wall of the chamber and they are categorized as classes A and B, respectively. The results from the experiments showed that in class A, the internal sweep events (class IV-A) moves the settled sediment particles toward the central orifice of the chamber, whereas in class B the external sweep events (class IV-B) moves the settled sediment particles toward the external region of the chamber. Also the transition probabilities of the bursting events in 64 particular movements were determined. The result showed that stable organizations of each class of the events had highest transition probabilities whereas cross organizations had lowest transition probabilities. Additionally, an effort was made to find the average inclination angle of the three dimensional bursting events in each cube zone. The results showed that near the bed of the vortex chamber by increasing the tangential velocity toward the center of the chamber, the average inclination angle of the events in the cube zones decreased. A high-resolution pollen record, c. 50 yr/sample, from terminal lake sediments in the Shiyang River drainage basin on the present margin of the summer monsoon was used to reconstruct vegetation and climate history during the Holocene. Forest trees from mountainous areas of the drainage, including Sabina, Picea and Pinus, dominated pollen assemblages in the early Holocene (11.6–7.1 cal. ka). In the mid-Holocene (7.1–3.8 cal. ka) desert and steppe shrubs and herbs around the lake, including Nitraria, Poaceae, Compositae and Artemisia, were dominant. The late Holocene (3.8–0 cal. ka) was again dominated by alternation of Pinus–Sabina tree pollen and desert-steppe pollen. The early Holocene forest expansion in the mountains and subsequent increase in the river transport of tree pollen corresponds with maximum precipitation during the East Asian summer monsoon maximum. The timing of these changes in our record from arid China is different from that of East China, where the Holocene monsoon maximum appeared in the middle Holocene. This difference indicates that the extent and development of summer monsoon circulation in the Holocene was complex. Changes in the pollen record appear to show pervasive and persistent centennial- to millennial-scale oscillations throughout both wet and dry periods of the Holocene. Foraminiferal and sedimentary data, supplemented with geochemical dating and ground-penetrating radar transects, show that the barrier island at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge just north of Rodanthe, North Carolina, has been dominated by a combination of inlet and overwash processes for at least 1000 years. The stratigraphic record of several vibracores does not preserve every, or even many, overwash events but, instead, is characterized by three to four fining-upward sequences. The last three commence with overwash sand or gravel that is overlain by a variety of finer-grained estuarine, inlet, and marsh deposits. The dynamic nature of this segment of the Outer Banks was muted in the late 1930s by construction of artificial barrier dune ridges, extensive planting of grass and shrubs, and construction of Highway 12 in 1953. Whalebacks are convex landforms created by the smoothing of bedrock by glacial processes. Their formation is attributed to glacial abrasion either by bodies of subglacial sediment sliding over bedrock or by individual clasts contained within ice. This paper reports field measurements of sediment depth around two whaleback landforms in order to investigate the relationship between glacigenic deposits and whaleback formation. The study site, at Lago Tranquilo in Chilean Patagonia, is situated within the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) ice limits. The two whalebacks are separated by intervening depressions in which sediment depths are generally 0.2 to 0.3 m. Two facies occur on and around the whalebacks. These facies are: (1) angular gravel found only on the surface of the whalebacks, interpreted as bedrock fracturing in response to unloading of the rock following pressure release after ice recession, and (2) sandy boulder-gravel in the sediment-filled depressions between the two whalebacks, interpreted as an ice-marginal deposit, with a mixture of sediment types including basal glacial and glaciofluvial sediment. Since the whalebacks have heavily abraded and striated surfaces but are surrounded by only a patchy and discontinuous layer of sediment, the implication is that surface abrasion of the whalebacks was achieved primarily by clasts entrained in basal ice, not by subglacial till sliding. The behaviour of deep-ocean sediments from the North Atlantic abyssal plains is examined within the context of a recognised framework, the Sensitivity Framework, which was developed by Cotecchia & Chandler for structured terrestrial clays. The deep-ocean sediments have very high sensitivities, of the order of those of quick clays, but in volumetric compression their destructuration occurs at more moderate rates, similar to those usually found in terrestrial clays of medium sensitivities. The deep-sea sediments were retrieved using different types of sampler, which influenced greatly the strength and stiffness of the different samples. In particular, in the lower-quality samples the greater disturbance caused by sampling is responsible for changing their behaviour from brittle to ductile during shearing after compression to stresses post-gross yield, giving them an apparent insensitivity to shear strains. Results from numerical analyses using a constitutive model that was developed for structured terrestrial clays are presented. They show that such a model, which accounts for natural structure, can be used to simulate the behaviour of deep-ocean sediments provided an appropriate destructuration law is used in the model. The north-western corner of Lake Le Bourget is situated along an active fault zone and accommodated a large sediment supply from the Rhone River until the end of the Late Glacial period. On the delta slope, the Holocene sheet drape that covers the largest buried mass wasting deposit (the HDU) shows undulations, small fractures and discontinuities that are attributed to downslope creep. Evidence for episodes of vigorous fluid expulsion is found in association with these discontinuities. All these features are rooted at the top of the HDU and occur along two specific isobaths. These observations indicate a close link between fractures and focused fluid flow. We suggest that focused fluid flow triggered by earthquakes facilitates the formation of small-scale faults that accommodate part of the downslope movement and eventually link up to form a head-scarp of a large slide (c. 107 m3).Terra Nova, 00, 1–7, 2004 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Channel-scale sedimentary units associated with bedrock-controlled riffle-pool morphology are examined in detail along Sandy Creek gorge, an ephemeral stream in arid south-eastern central Australia. Pool-fills comprise cut-and-fill assemblages of poorly sorted sediments ranging in texture from muds to boulders. Five unit types are defined based on particle size, sedimentary structures, geometry and bounding surface character: (1) coarse-grained bar platform; (2) fine-grained bar supraplatform; (3) fine-grained pool-fill; (4) fine-grained bench; and (5) modern pool-fill. The last coarse-grained unit currently lining the pools suggests an altered sedimentation style over the post-settlement period (post-ad 1860s). Situated at bedrock valley constrictions, pool-fills are compared with other sedimentary units associated with recirculating currents: eddy bars and slackwater deposits. But only the fine-grained bench units reflect eddy recirculation; the pool-fills are principally forced-bars associated with bedrock-controlled or‘forced’ riffle-pool morphology. A late Holocene palaeoflood history is proposed based on radiocarbon ages from the pool-fills: multiple phases of cut-and-fill activity were preceded by a superflood 3400–1900 years ago that eroded the pool-fills to bedrock. The resilience of the pool-fills was illustrated by the passage of a 1-in-100-year flood in 1992, which caused only minor erosion. The presence of pool-fills may provide a window to past phases of river activity that cannot be extracted from either historical records/observations or palaeoflood slackwater sediment analyses. The formation and sedimentary preservation potential of these landforms reflect a combination of hydraulic and structural influences, but the occurrence of high-magnitude floods exerts the dominant control. Fine sediment deposition in the ocean is complicated by the cohesive nature of muds and their tendency to flocculate. The result is disaggregated inorganic grain size (DIGS) distributions of bottom sediment that are influenced by single-grain and floc deposition. This study outlines a parametric model that characterizes bottom sediment DIGS distributions. Modelled parameters are then used to infer depositional conditions that account for the regional variation in the grain sizes deposited by turbidity currents on the Laurentian Fan–Sohm Abyssal Plain, offshore south-eastern Canada. Results indicate that, on the channellized Laurentian Fan, the mass fraction of floc-deposited mud increases only slightly downslope. The small evolution in this fraction arises because sediment concentration and turbulent energy are associated in turbidity currents. On the Sohm Abyssal Plain, however, the mass fraction of floc-deposited mud decreases, probably as a result of lower sediment concentration at this source-distal site. Estimates of the mass fraction of mud deposited as flocs suggest that floc deposition is the dominant mode by which sediment is lost from suspension, although single-grain deposition contributes more to the depositional flux in proximal areas where high energy breaks flocs and in distal areas where low sediment concentration limits floc formation. It is concluded that, throughout the dispersal system, changes in the fraction of flocculated mud deposited from turbidity currents reflect changes in sediment concentration and energy downslope. Sediments deposited off the Nicoya Peninsula advect large volumes of water as they enter the Costa Rica subduction zone. Seismic reflection data, together with results from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 170, show that hemipelagic mud comprises the upper ∼135 m of the sediment column (ranging from 0 to 210 m). The lower ∼215 m of the sediment column (ranging from 0 to 470 m) is pelagic carbonate ooze. We analyzed samples from 60 shallow (<7 m) cores to characterize the spatial variability of sediment composition on the incoming Cocos Plate. The bulk hemipelagic sediment is 10 wt% opal and 60 wt% smectite on average, with no significant variations along strike; the pelagic chalk contains approximately 2 wt% opal and <1 wt% smectite. Initially, most of the water (96%) in the subducting sediment is stored in pore spaces, but the pore water is expelled during the early stages of subduction by compaction and tectonic consolidation. Approximately 3.6% of the sediment's total water volume enters the subduction zone as interlayer water in smectite; only 0.4% of the water is bound in opal. Once subducting strata reach depths greater than 6 km (more than 30 km inboard of the subduction front), porosity drops to less than 15%, and temperature rises to greater than 60°C. Under those conditions, discrete pulses of opal and smectite dehydration should create local compartments of fluid overpressure, which probably influence fluid flow patterns and reduce effective stress along the plate boundary fault. Late Oligocene basins were very unusual in terms of sedimentation. The most remarkable example is the early Kalmykian basin that was characterized by the drastic morphological differentiation and deposition of substantially different lithofacies sediment types (shallow-water shelf to relatively deep-water facies in anoxic troughs). Slopes of the troughs and uncompensated areas are marked by the accumulation of thick sandy-silty-clayey (up to 1000 m) and thin calcerous-clayey (up to 100 m) sediments, respectively. The outer shelf zone with islands and shoals includes metalliferous fish bone detritus and iron sulfide deposits. This exotic feature of the Kalmykian basin has no genetic analogues among other formations of the world. This communication presents the first description of the late Kalmykian basin and its lithofacies map that demonstrates the abrupt transformation of the paleogeographic setting in the late Oligocene as a result of the general relative shoaling and basin bottom leveling. Consequently, metalliferous sediments ceased to accumulate in the northern shelf area, but bone-sulfide deposits could accumulate in the southern part of the basin along the Caucasian archipelago. Correlation of continental shelf-slope stratigraphy in Santa Monica Bay (southern California) with Ocean Drilling Program records for nearby slope-basin sites has illuminated the timing and scale of terrigenous sediment dispersal on margin since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Marine flooding surfaces preserved in a transgressive sequence on the Santa Monica Shelf provide a key link between base-level elevation and sediment transport across shelf. Sediment-accumulation rates at slope-basin sites were maximal ca. 15-10 ka, well after the LGM, decreased during the 12-9 ka transition from fluvial-estuarine to fully marine conditions on the shelf, and decelerated throughout the Holocene to 30%-75% of their values at the LGM. The deceleration is interpreted to manifest a landward shift in the margin depocenter with the onset of transgressive sedimentation beginning when sea level surmounted the shelf edge ca. 13 ka, as predicted by sequence-stratigraphic models. The sediments of Santa Barbara Basin, a valuable source of information about the history of the California Current, show cyclic deposition in three properties here investigated: varve thickness, total organic carbon (TOC) accumulation, and fish-scale abundance. We analyzed the record since A.D. 1350 for varves, A.D. 1120 for TOC, and A.D. 1200 for fish scales. Prominent periods are 169 yr, 93 yr, 51.4 yr, 17.7 yr (varve thickness), 124 yr, 56 yr, 37.4 yr (TOC flux), and 103 yr, 128 yr (fish-scale abundance). A surprising number of the varve and TOC cycles can be interpreted as deriving from the common tidal cycles, i.e., the 4.425 yr perigee period (describing the changing distance between Earth and Moon) and the 18.6 yr lunar nodal period (which pertains to the lineup of Earth, Moon, and Sun). We suggest that the record of the basin is partly a result of pulsed sedimentation aligned with tides. These findings support the hypothesis that a considerable portion of sediment destined for deposition in the center of the basin goes through a phase of shallow storage on the shelf where it can be remobilized through storms and tides. Mechanisms calling on tidally pulsed productivity or tidally influenced climate change are not excluded, but are considered less attractive than remobilization. Basal ice samples were collected from ice exposures in a natural subglacial cavity beneath an outlet glacier of Øksfjordjøkelen, North Norway. Sediment and cation (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+) concentrations were then determined, and indicate stacking of basal ice units producing a repeat pattern of 'clean firnification ice' overlying sedimentrich ice. All measured cations show correlation with sediment concentration indicating weathering reactions to be the dominant contributor of cations. Regressions of specific sediment surface area per unit volume with cation concentration are performed and used to predict cation concentrations. These predicted values provide an indication of cation relocation within the basal ice sequence. The results suggest limited melting and refreezing resulting in the relocation of predominantly monovalent cations downward through the profile. Exchange of cations into solution during the melting of sediment-rich ice samples has previously been suggested as a source of error in such investigations. Analyses of sediment-free regelation ice spicules formed at the bed show cation concentrations above firnification ice levels and comparable, in many instances, to the basal ice samples. Large sediment deposits on the reef front around Oahu are a possible resource for replenishing eroded beaches. High-resolution subbottom profiles clearly depict the deposits in three study areas: Kailua Bay off the windward coast, Makua to Kahe Point off the leeward coast, and Camp Erdman to Waimea off the north coast. Most of the sediment is in water depths between 20 and 100&ThickSpace;m, resting on submerged shelves created during lowstands of sea level. The mapped deposits have a volume of about 4&ThickSpace;×&ThickSpace;108&ThickSpace;m3 in water depths less than 100&ThickSpace;m, being thickest off the mouth of channels carved into the modern insular shelf, from which most of the sediment issues. Vibracore samples contain various amounts of sediment of similar size to the sand on Oahu beaches, with the most compatible prospects located off Makaha, Haleiwa, and Camp Erdman, and the least compatible ones located in Kailua Bay. Laboratory tests show a positive correlation of abrasion with Halimeda content: samples from Kailua Bay suffered high amounts of attrition, but others were comparable to tested beach samples. The common gray color of the offshore sediment, aesthetically undesirable for sand on popular tourist beaches, was diminished in the laboratory by soaking in heated hydrogen peroxide. The deep ocean floor between the Clarion and Clipperton fracture zones (NE equatorial Pacific) has the highest known manganese nodule abundance in the world oceans. A detailed analysis of MR1 (Mapping Researcher 1, 11–12&ThickSpace;kHz) sonar images and free-fall grab data in the Korean manganese nodule field areas reveals a close relationship between side-scan sonar characteristics of the seafloor and manganese nodule abundance. Eight sonar facies are identified based on back-scattering intensity and distribution patterns. These sonar facies can be interpreted as (1) volcanic seamounts (facies I-1), (2) bounding faults of abyssal hills (facies I-2 and II-1), (3) lava flows or volcanoclastic mass-flow deposits around the volcanic seamounts (facies I-3 and II-2), (4) crests of abyssal hills (facies II-1), (5) abyssal troughs between abyssal hills (facies III-1), (6) relatively flat areas (facies II-3 and III-2). In the areas where facies II-1 (abyssal hill crests with thin sediment cover) and II-3 (relatively flat areas draped by thin sediments) are dominant, manganese nodules occur abundantly. In contrast, zones comprising facies III-1 (abyssal troughs with thick sediment cover) and III-2 (relatively flat areas covered by thick sediments) are characterized by low abundance of manganese nodules. This relationship between distribution of sonar facies and manganese nodule abundance implies that (1) the qualitative difference in acoustic reflectivity of long-range side-scan sonar with some ground truth data is useful for regional assessment of manganese nodule occurrence over wide areas in a reasonable time, and (2) seafloor topography and sediment thickness are important controlling factors for regional occurrences of manganese nodules. Global fallout 137Cs was used for dating sediment cores and estimation of recent sedimentation rates (up to 1 cm/y) in the Thane Creek, which lies in the southern part of the Deccan belt of India. The residence time of 210Pb in the Thane Creek water was calculated to be 0.7 years. Further, the concentrations of Pb (up to 70 μg/g) and Hg (up to 10 μg/g) in sediment profiles were measured to assess the anthropogenic input of contaminants due to large-scale industrialization, which has taken place in this area over the last two decades. In shallow lakes, the cycling of P between water and bottom sediments is strongly influenced by wind-induced resuspension of particulate matter. The significance of this P flux as an algal nutrient source is unclear. We examined gross sedimentation in 3 open and shallow agriculturally loaded lakes. In addition, we estimated the potential P-release from settling and bottom matter by laboratory tests. The mean daily rate of gross sedimentation was 21–170 g m-2 d-1 of dry sediment, 0.04–0.18 g m-2 d-1 of P and 0.18–2.0 g m-2 d-1 of N; being the highest in the shallowest and most eutrophic lake. In Lake Karhijärvi, where the most intensive measurements were taken, wind explained the temporal variation in the gross sedimentation to some extent. The settling matter consisted of inorganic particles low in nutrients, especially during peak sedimentation periods. On average, 7.7 ± 3.1% ($\{x\}$ ± 95% confidence interval) of the P in the settling matter in L. Karhijärvi was in an algal-available form according to 2–3 week bioassays. In the bottom matter of the three lakes, 3.0 ± 1.7% and 2.5 ± 3.6%, and 4.3 ± 3.7% of the P was utilized by the algae. In L. Karhijärvi, resuspension of the potentially available P exceeded 20 times the external loading during the open water season. According to sorption tests, P is released from the bottom matter only when the concentration of o-P is <2 μg l-1. Although such a low value cannot be determined with common analytical procedures, it seems probable that the P concentration allows P desorption during P-limited periods. The concentrations of o-phosphate and dissolved inorganic carbon were monitored in the interstitial water of the sediment in two highly eutrophic coastal lagoons, Laguna Honda and Laguna Nueva (SE, Spain) from July 2000 to August 2001. Additionally, the organic matter concentration and the P-fractions in the sediment were analysed. Despite their proximity, these two lagoons showed many significant differences (P<0.05). The P-concentration in the interstitial water of the top sediment was higher in the Laguna Honda (up to 1 mg l-1), especially during summer, when both sites registered their highest values. By contrast, the concentration of organic matter and organic P-fractions were higher in the sediment of the Laguna Nueva. The concentration of the organic matter in the vertical profile of the sediment decreased with depth in the Laguna Nueva (from 17% at 0 cm to 7% at 15 cm, annual mean value) while it increased in the sediment of Laguna Honda (from 9% at 0 cm to 12% at 15 cm, annual mean value). The P-concentration in the interstitial water and the organic matter in the top sediment of Laguna Honda followed a seasonal pattern and, were both correlated with the temperature of the bottom water (r=0.706, P<0.05 and r= -0.929, P<0.01, respectively). The inorg-P fractions comprised 63% of the Tot-phosphate in the sediment of Laguna Honda, whereas org-P fractions (68%) dominated in the sediment of Laguna Nueva. The concentrations of Tot-P in the sestonic material collected at three different depths of the water column averaged 2.2 mg g-1d.w. in Laguna Honda and 2.5 mg g-1d.w. in Laguna Nueva. The average atomic C:P ratio of the sestonic material was significantly higher in Laguna Honda than in Laguna Nueva, but the top sediment in Laguna Nueva had a C:P ratio significantly higher than that of the sestonic material (average: 416 and 162, respectively).The different biodegradability of the organic matter in the top sediment probably explained the differences found in sediment composition between these two lagoons. We suggest that the P-reclying from the sediment to the interstitial water was faster in Laguna Honda due to the higher biodegradability of the organic matter. By contrast, the lower biodegradability of the organic matter in the top sediment of Laguna Nueva was probably due to a higher contribution of vascular plants which could explain the organic matter accumulation detected in this lagoon. The temporal and spatial distribution of total nitrogen and total phosphate in the sediments of a shallow eutrophic Chinese lake (Lake Chao), and their relationships with the physical and chemical features of sediments, and their effects on the lake water quality and trophic state, are presented in this paper. The following results were obtained: (1) higher concentration of Tot-N and Tot-P in the sediments occurred in the summer and the autumn seasons; (2) higher annual average Tot-N and Tot-P concentrations were observed in the sediments near the various river mouths and in the western part of the lake; (3) Tot-N and Tot-P concentration in the lake sediments generally increased with increase in lake sediment Eh, pH, and Al2O3, and declined with decrease in lake sediment size diameters and SiO2; and, (4) correlations were observed in both the temporal and spatial distributions between the trophic state, Tot-N and Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and the Tot-N and Tot-P concentration found in the lake sediments. Phosphate binding and P-release in the sediment of the eutrophic shallow Lake Bützow are described based on sediment profiles, particle size fractions and incubation experiments. Total phosphorus was about 15% higher in the upper 0.5 cm layer than in the 0.5–1 cm layer. Phosphorus binding varied with sediment depth. Hot P→NaOH and P→HCl were the dominant fractions in all sediment horizons down to 10 cm depth, with values ranging from 20 to 30%. The P→H2O, P→BD, o-P→NaOH and nr-P→NaOH decreased with depth. The P→BD contributed 21% to Tot-P in the horizon 0–0.5 cm and decreased by half in 1–2 cm. The greatest proportion of particles (35%) was found in the 100–200 μm fraction. This size fraction also accumulated most of the phosphate. Moreover, P-forms were differently distributed in the various particle sizes of the sediment. Sediment particles <40 μm can be resuspended by a wind velocity of 2 m s-1, whereby 17% of the Tot-P from the topmost sediment were transported into the water column. The proportions of released labile phosphate, organic phosphate and hydrolysable phosphate were higher, with values of 24, 33 and 26%, respectively. Dissolved P was released under oxic and anoxic incubation, but anoxic release was higher. Comparison of the results shows that the P-release under anoxic conditions was equal to the P-release by resuspension, but under anoxic conditions the release of bioavailable P was higher. Rates of inorganic nutrient and oxygen fluxes, and gross community primary productivity were investigated using incubated cores in July, August and September 2001, in a seagrass meadow of Lake Illawarra, a barrier estuary in New South Wales, Australia. The results indicated that rates of gross primary productivity were high, varying from C = 0.62 to 1.89 g m-2 d-1; low P/R ratios of 0.28–0.48 define the system as heterotrophic and indicate that more carbon is respired than is produced. In order to determine the effect of macroalgae on O2 and nutrient fluxes, measurements were also conducted on cores from which the macroalgae had been removed. The results showed that the O2 fluxes during light incubations were significantly lower in the cores without macroalgae (P<0.01), indicating that macroalgae could be a significant contributor to the primary production in the lake. In general, nutrient fluxes showed a typical diurnal variation with an efflux from sediments in the dark and a reduced efflux (or uptake) in the light. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (NO2-+ NO3-+NH4+) net fluxes were directed from the sediments towards the water column and dominated by the NH4+ fluxes (>80%). NO2-+ NO3- and o-P fluxes were always very low during the sampling period. The increasing tendency of net nutrient effluxes, especially NH4+ from July to September, is consistent with the increase of the water temperature and seagrass biomasses. However, in September, significantly lower light, dark and net NH4+ effluxes were found in the cores with macroalgae (SA-sediments) compared with the cores without macroalgae (S-sediments). These results support the hypothesis that actively-growing dense macroalgal mats (i.e., algal blooms in September) may act as a filter reducing the flux of nutrients to the water column. A persistent benthic nepheloid layer with high total suspended matter (TSM) and high total particulate surface area was observed in south-eastern Lake Michigan. The layer thickens from a few metres near the shelf—slope boundary to greater than 10 m at the base of the slope. When compared to the hypolimnion, TSM increases by a factor of 2–20 at 1 m above the bottom, the greatest increase detected at the slope—basin boundary. Sediment trap profiles within the nepheloid layer show that the particulate flux increases exponentially from about 10 m above the bottom to l m above the bottom, suggesting that a large fraction of the collected material came from resuspension. A nepheloid layer is created during the formation of the thermal bar and maintained during the stratified period, apparently through the action of weak but persistent currents. This layer is supplemented by lakeward transport of fine particles resuspended near the shelf-slope boundary due to impingement of the thermociine on the bottom, or during higher energy events. The most common wave-generated structures in the nearshore lacustrine sediments of the south-east Shetland basin are cosets of undulatory and unidirectional ripple cross-lamination. The undulatory lamination was produced at relatively high oscillatory flow strengths by accretion of rolling grain (post-vortex) ripples, and the unidirectional cross-sets were formed by the migration of vortex (orbital) ripples at lower strengths. Unidirectional solitary lenses were generated under moderate but discontinuous wave activity on a partly sand-starved substrate. Some lenses were reworked during periods of more prolonged wave activity. The lnman—Komar plot of near-bottom orbital diameter versus ripple spacing (λ = 0.80d0 for small-d0, or λ = 0.65d0 as modified by Miller & Komar) may only be used in estimating ancient wave conditions for vortex ripples with tow Vertical Form Indices and small wavelengths. This laboratory based relationship (minimum d0 conditions) is utilized in this study since wave periods in lakes are small. The estimation of ancient wave conditions suggests that the ripples were produced in water depths of up to 10 m and in most cases less than 5 m. Sandstones of the uppermost Witteberg Group in the Cape fold belt of South Africa exhibit unusual and distinctive soft-sediment deformation structures. These structures include folds, axial planar cleavage and micro-fold lineations. Interfering fold patterns and intersecting sets of lineations are indicative of repeated deformation. The sandstones are immediately overlain by glacial and proglacial sediments of the Carboniferous Dwyka Group, indicating that the deformation was related to glaciation, Possible environments of deformation include: (a) subglacial dragging of unconsolidated material, (b) subaqueous slumping beyond the limit of floating ice, and (c) englacial deformation of material incorporated by freezing into the base of the glacier. Microscopical and chemical examination of intertidal flats of the Wash indicate that phases of iron corresponding to ferric hydroxide and iron monosulphide are involved in the early diagenetic formation of pyrite, the first being an important source of the iron. Sedimentological data are tested against analyses of total iron extractable by hydrochloric acid and concentrated nitric acid, and of the pyritic fraction of this iron; ignition data for residual organic matter are considered. The occurrence of the pyrite as isolated grains and spherules of framboidal texture is recorded, their size ranges given, and iron monosulphide recognised as the precursor of both forms. Ordering in the pyrite framboidal spherules is recorded and internal coalescence confirmed as a feature of primary growth which obscures the ordering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A simple method to estimate the degree of ‘crystallinity’ of illite has been used for several years in three French laboratories. Many results, which are unpublished, were obtained; three examples are presented in this paper. They show the sensibility of the method, which allows one to appreciate, above all other methods, burial diagenesis, the front of metamorphism, or some regional areas of very weak metamorphism. The observed size in the thin-section is less than the true train sizes of the clastic rock as the thin-section plane does not necessarily pass through the centre of gravity of the grains. Correction factors based on probability theory give corrected arithmetic moments of the size distribution in the elastic rock from the observed arithmetic moments of the size distribution in the thin-section. The corrected arithmetic moments so obtained are transformed to their equivalent corrected phi moments which are useful to generate the unknown size distribution of the clastic rock by the help of Edgeworth's series. Indices based on Wentworth phi values of Q1, Md and Q3 are used for textural classification of sediments. Wentworth phi values enable a detailed subdivision. A nomenclature based on the Wentworth phi indices is developed. The indices, and to a smaller degree the names, show sorting and skewness based on integer phi units. The classification scheme gives a continuous scale from gravel to fine clay. The Q1MdQ3-indices can be used for distinction of river, marine and loess deposits. The addition of indices of the 1st and 99th percentile, giving 5-digit indices, augments the Possibilities for a determination of the environment: river deposits can be distinguished from beach and dune sediments and in more detail from shallow marine and coastal deposits. The crystallinity and mineralogy of both the glauconite and the clay fraction of samples from six contemporary marine environments were investigated by X-ray diffraction. In those areas where glauconite is now forming, the mineralogy and the degree of crystallinity of both the glauconite pellets and the associated clay fraction are similar. In contrast, detrital and relic glauconites are observed to have mineralogies that are different from their clay fractions. No consistent relationship was observed between degree of crystallinity and color of the pellets. Further, only two classes of glauconite as defined by BuRsT (1958) were common: expandable, interlayered clays and two or more clay minerals in a mixed assemblage. Based on the clay fraction-glauconite similarities and other supporting evidence, glauconite on the Scotia Ridge is concluded to be authigenic. Glauconite from Santa Monica Bay, California and from the continental shelf off Morocco appear to be detrital. Glauconite pellets in the shelf sediments off Guinea and the southeastern Atlantic Shelf of the United States are both detrital and authigenic. The poor crystallinity exhibited by the Chatham Rise glauconite is in contrast to the well-crystallized associated clay fraction and indicates that they are not genetically related.
