MYTHOLOGY , *MASCULINITY , *IDEOLOGICAL analysis , *NATION building ,PERUVIAN history - Abstract
"El General y 'lo pequeño' de la historia" analyzes several of Ricardo Palma's tradiciones that focus on Simón Bolívar. The tradiciones demystify not only General Bolívar, the independence-era hero whose life and times are chronicled throughout Venezuelan and Andean cultural mythologies, but, moreover, history itself, a discourse ascendant in power and prestige during the nineteenth century in Spanish America. Many of these tradiciones present a Peruvian critique of the Libertador, portraying him as an imperfect figure, both authoritarian and effeminate, characterizations that are quite distinct from those associated with the cult of Bolívar. These narratives underscore the artificial separation between history and fiction, while examining history as an ideological, nation-building discourse. Palma's Bolivarian tradiciones emphasize the subjective nature of history in order to cultivate critical counterpublics that might read against the grain, questioning both the general and "lo pequeño" of official histories and their fictions.

Bolívar’s life and actions, hero of Latin American Independence Wars and and Venezuela’s « Liberator », gave rise from the nineteenth century onwards to the establishment of a civic religion whose consensual aspect accompanied the forming of the Venezuelan nation, paving the way for the imposition in the long term of an official History based on heroic cult. With Chávez’s arrival as President of the Republic (1999-2013), « Bolivar’s cult » reached a decisive stage. The new official History tends indeed to promote the redeeming vision of a « second Independence », this time against the American « empire », turning the « twenty-first century Bolívar » into the continent’s new saviour. Therefore, we are witnessing an unprecedented instrumentalization of History, in an extremely consensual and inspiring context: the Bicentennial of Latin American Independence Wars.

This article examines the role played by some intellectuals and neogranadian politicians in the early years of the Republic in the creation of stories and heroes of independence. These illustrated politicians were given the task of drawing up some stories and interpretations about the immediate past of emancipation and the colonial period, in order to understand how much reprocessing of the past could be useful to consolidate a new project of State nation and the Republic. This initial process of some stories and heroes of independence would be crucial in the construction of a national memory which is represented with regard to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the independence of Colombia.

This article examines the soundscape, both commemorative and disruptive, experienced in the city of Lima during the War of Independence, focusing on the sounds produced by church bells and cannons. Even though, in Lima, patriots and royalists never fought a pitched battle, the war resoundingly marked the city’s aural environment. Disruptive noise emitted by church bells and cannons during the war greatly exceeded in intensity and duration the commemorative sounds sponsored by the independent government, and even had the power to change it dramatically.

This essays aims to analyze the use of bolivarian myths in Venezuelan history from point of view of the history of ideas and representations. So its focuses on long term interpretation in order to emphasize the political imaginary of Bolivarian Republic. It points out to the fact that, along with Independence consecrated chronology and homeland centered historiography, come up matters and passions frequently forgotten by academic history but recovered by the new official history.

The author examines “Guayaquil”, a short-story by Jorge Luis Borges included in Doctor Brodie’s Report, which tells the historical rendezvous between Bolívar and San Martín that took place in the city. Robles sheds light on Borges’ text through references to Joseph Conrad’s novel Nostromo, plotted with criollo elites and caudillos, their wanderings and betrayals. Robles claims that Borges depicts his own view of history in “Guayaquil”: a construction based on intertwining perspectives, rearranged pieces of information and imprecisions. In the quest for power, where popular caudillos as well as refined politicians are involved, Borges would believe a major role is played by will and decision as opposed to words. Finally, the author examines the effect of how stories are organized differently within the book. The first English version would show an increasing representation of barbarism (as theme), present in Latin American nations a century and a half after their independence.

The revolution in Santo Domingo had a greater influence on Venezuelan independence than the participants or later historians have been prepared to acknowledge. For it called into question the reasons usually offered to justify the emancipation from Spain—liberty and equality. It is true that nothing was further from the minds of the créole elites asserting their independence than to extend freedom to their black slaves, and to regard them as equals, or evenfor that matter, to non-whites, though these werefree. Whereas for the blacks the revolution in Santo Domingo showed them the road to equality, for the elites it represented a model to be avoided. It was this contradictory or ambivalent influence of the Haitian revolution that was among the chief causes for the delay in the affirmation of the principle of national emancipation., La Révolution de Saint-Domingue a beaucoup plus influencé le processus d'indépendance du Venezuela que ce que les acteurs de ces événements et les historiens d'aujourd'hui sont prêts à reconnaître. Some relationships of considerable interest to the history of Spanish Botany are illustrated based on documents at the author's disposa]. Ignacio's Bolívar leadership in the whole range of our Natural Sciences is well known; a leadership Cándido, his son, inherited early, it seems, and continued up to end of the civil war.
