Antimicrobial resistance is a global threat, and pet-associated strains may pose a risk to human health. Equine veterinarians are at high risk of carrying methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS), but specific risk factors remain elusive, and few data are available for other personnel involved in the horse industry. The prevalence, characteristics, and risk factors for nasal carriage of MRS in horses and their caregivers were studied in northwestern Italy. Nasal swabs from 110 asymptomatic horses housed at 21 barns and 34 human caregivers were collected. Data on barns, horses, and personnel were acquired through questionnaires. The samples were incubated in selective media, and the bacterial isolates were identified by mass spectrometry. Risk factors were investigated by Poisson regression. MRS were isolated from 33 horses (30%), 11 humans (32.4%) and 3 environmental samples (14.2%). Most isolates were multidrug resistant (MDRS). The prevalence of MRS and MDRS was greater in racehorses and their personnel than in pleasurable and jumping/dressing horses. MRS carriage in caregivers was associated with an increased prevalence of MRS carriage in horses. The frequency of antimicrobial treatments administered in the barn during the last 12 months was a risk factor for MRS carriage in horses [prevalence ratio (PR) 3.97, 95% CI 1.11, 14.13] and caregivers (PR 2.00, 95% CI 1.05, 3.82), whereas a good ventilation index of the horse tabling environment was a protective factor (PR 0.43, 95% CI 0.20, 0.92). Our data reveal relevant interactions occurring between bacterial communities of horses and humans that share the same environment, suggesting that One Health surveillance programs should be implemented. Equid herpesvirus 4 (EHV-4) is a common respiratory pathogen in horses. It sporadically induces abortion or neonatal death. Although its contribution in neurological disorders is not clearly demonstrated, there is a strong suspicion of its involvement. Despite preventive treatments using vaccines against EHV-1/EHV-4, the resurgence of alpha-EHV infection still constitutes an important threat to the horse industry. Yet very few studies have been conducted on the search for antiviral molecules against EHV-4. A screening of 42 antiviral compounds was performed in vitro on equine fibroblast cells infected with the EHV-4 405/76 reference strain (VR2230). The formation of cytopathic effects was monitored by real-time cell analysis (RTCA), and the viral load was quantified by quantitative PCR. Aciclovir, the most widely used antiviral against alpha-herpesviruses in vivo, does not appear to be effective against EHV-4 in vitro. Potential antiviral activities were confirmed for eight molecules (idoxuridine, vidarabine, pritelivir, cidofovir, valganciclovir, ganciclovir, aphidicolin, and decitabine). Decitabine demonstrates the highest efficacy against EHV-4 in vitro. Transcriptomic analysis revealed the up-regulation of various genes implicated in interferon (IFN) response, suggesting that decitabine triggers the immune antiviral pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Rotaviral infection is the most common cause of foal diarrhoea, leading to severe dehydration and electrolyte derangements, which, left untreated, can be rapidly fatal. Until 2021, equine rotaviruses of group A (ERVA) were considered to be the only rotaviruses affecting horses; however, equine rotavirus group B (ERVB) has recently been identified in association with neonatal foal diarrhoea outbreaks. ERVA has been observed globally in many countries with large equine industries. Equine rotaviruses (ERV) are extremely contagious. Foals as young as 12 hours of age can show clinical signs. These clinical signs include inappetence, dullness, colic and characteristic watery diarrhoea that can be orange‐yellow to reddish‐brown in colour. Nowadays diagnosis relies mainly on qPCR—a test limited by the fact that PCR is a directed test requiring a priori knowledge of a pathogen's genome. The mainstay of therapy for rotaviral diarrhoea is supportive care since treatment directly targeting the virus itself is not available. Prevention relies on proper biosecurity protocols and, in the case of ERVA, vaccination of mares. Currently, researchers at the University of Kentucky are working on developing a vaccine for ERVB. Summary: In 2019, a Swedish outbreak of equine herpes virus type 1 (EHV‐1) led to varying neurological symptoms also known as EHM (equine herpes myeloencephalopathy). Nineteen of the 39 exposed horses developed EHM. EHM outbreaks have become more common in recent decades and can result in large economic losses for the horse industry in addition to clear welfare implications. However, there is limited information about the estimated time to recovery from EHM and return to previous level of performance and there is limited published information regarding neurological rehabilitation in horses. Our objective was to describe and evaluate the potential benefit of implementing individual rehabilitation plans for horses recovering from EHM. Four horses with EHV‐1 and with clinical signs of neurological dysfunction were selected. All horses were initially hospitalised at an intensive care unit between 4 and 9 days and approximately 3 months after the outbreak they were considered sufficiently recovered to start a rehabilitation programme. The programs mainly focused on regaining proprioception, core stability and strength with consideration given to fatigue in the horse and risk to the handlers. A repeated neurological examination was performed six times over the first year and the rehabilitation programs were modified accordingly. The owners considered the horses 'normal', both mentally and physically, between 6 and 8 months after the outbreak. All horses were back to their previous level of performance after 8–11 months. A limitation of the study was a small study population with no control group. Our conclusions are that horses suffering from severe EHM may return to an acceptable athletic function given time and an individually adapted rehabilitation program. To potentially show that an individually adapted rehabilitation plan brings the horse back to acceptable function faster than nonspecific rehabilitation, a case‐control study would be required. Abortions in horses represent an important health and economic challenge for equine industry. Primary causes of abortion are divided in non‐infectious and infectious. Non‐infectious causes include abnormalities of foetal appendices (umbilical cord and placenta essentially), abnormalities of gestation, maternal and foetal origins. Infectious abortions are caused in almost cases by bacterial infections, followed by viruses, fungi and parasites. New abortive pathogens (as Leptospira, Neospora caninum, Coxiella burnetii, Chlamydophila abortus, and) have been confirmed in equines by comparison already known for their abortive properties in human or in other species. Despite an increasing number of autopsies and continuous improvements in diagnostic tools, in management and surveillance, 20%–40% of the causes of equine abortion remain unknown depending on the country. Simple Summary: Sports that involve horses are complicated, and research focusing on the health and well-being of horse, rider, and environment requires collaboration across disciplines. Our team has developed a new approach called the Triple-E Model, which expands on the One Health Model. The Triple-E Model focuses on the horse (equine), rider (equestrian), and the environment. Right now, no models capture all the complexities of these interactions, even though the horse industry has a significant impact on the economy and healthcare. This paper discusses the current models and their shortcomings in equestrian sports complexities and then introduces the Triple-E Model as a solution. It allows different experts to collaborate and share their knowledge to help the equestrian community. The Triple-E Model goes beyond just looking at diseases and includes injuries and overall well-being. It is all about working together as a team to provide the best care and support for everyone involved in equestrian activities. Equestrian sport has various welfare issues and educational needs. To address these complex interactions, we propose an integrated approach called the Triple-E Model, which focuses on the equine, equestrian, and environmental triad. A literature review of existing models suggests that complexities of these interactions are overlooked, despite the significant impact of equine industries on economics, healthcare, and animal welfare. This paper discusses current models and theories used to evaluate equine–equestrian–environmental interactions and introduces the Triple-E Model to foster multidisciplinary collaboration. Unlike the One Health triad, which focuses on disease emergence, transmission, and zoonosis, the Triple-E Model extends to non-infectious research, such as musculoskeletal injury. It promotes collaborative care and rehabilitation within the equestrian community by engaging multidisciplinary, multi-setting, and multi-sectoral teams. Given the nature of human–animal interaction and welfare considerations, this model fills the gap in understanding human–horse interactions. Simple Summary: There is an increased understanding of shared human–animal risk in terms of "one welfare", whereby when animals are at risk, so are people. Reducing the risk and preventing injury to one species may also prevent injury to the other. The authors of the current manuscript considered this approach to study road equine transport-related injuries to humans in New Zealand and so aimed to determine their frequency and associated factors. New Zealand horse industry participants were surveyed on their horse industry, activities, and road transport experiences and asked if they had experienced horse-related self-injury. There were 112/1067 (10.5%) owners and carers injured while preparing, loading, traveling, or unloading. Of these, four in ten had multiple injury types, and a third had several body regions affected. Hand injury was most common, followed by the foot, arm, head, or face. Injuries were associated with the responder's industry educational background, driving experience, and reporting a horse injured during road transport in the past two years. Findings support wearing helmets and gloves, and adopting strategies designed to eliminate equine injuries associated with the road transport of horses to reduce the risk of injury to their handlers. Vaccination is one of the most widely used strategies to protect horses against pathogens. However, available equine vaccines often have limitations, as they do not always provide effective, long-term protection and booster injections are often required. In addition, research efforts are needed to develop effective vaccines against emerging equine pathogens. In this review, we provide an inventory of approved adjuvants for equine vaccines worldwide, and discuss their composition and mode of action when available. A wide range of adjuvants are used in marketed vaccines for horses, the main families being aluminium salts, emulsions, polymers, saponins and ISCOMs. We also present veterinary adjuvants that are already used for vaccination in other species and are currently evaluated in horses to improve equine vaccination and to meet the expected level of protection against pathogens in the equine industry. Finally, we discuss new adjuvants such as liposomes, polylactic acid polymers, inulin, poly-ε-caprolactone nanoparticles and co-polymers that are in development. Our objective is to help professionals in the horse industry understand the composition of marketed equine vaccines in a context of mistrust towards vaccines. Besides, this review provides researchers with a list of adjuvants, either approved or at least evaluated in horses, that could be used either alone or in combination to develop new vaccines. Parascariasis is the most common disease of horses, which needs strict control to prevent losses in the equine industry. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of locally accessible herbal plants, as natural remedies, in managing Parascaris equorum infection relative to a most efficacious but expensive allopathic medicine Piperazine Adipate (PA). One hundred and ten horses naturally infected with Parascaris equorum were randomly allocated to five treatment groups each having ten animals. The treatments included aqueous extracts of three herbal drugs that is Nigella sativa (N. sativa) seeds, Fumaria parviflora (F. parviflora) leaves, Flemingia macrophylla (F. macrophylla) leaves, positive control with PA and untreated negative control. Plant extracts were administered through a nasogastric tube, on day 0 and 18 at a dose rate of 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 g/kg body weight (BW) of horses. Piperazine adipate was given at a dose rate of 0.113 g/kg BW. All of the herbal extracts, at a dosage of 0.15 g/kg BW, showed increased efficacy as indicated by a significant (p<0.01) reduction in eggs per gram (EPG) of faecal samples on day 18 of the first treatment. Further reduction (p<0.01) in EPG was noticed on day 28 of the 2nd treatment. Efficacy was highest for N. sativa on the 28th-day post-treatment which was 86.08% as compared to 82.11% and 73.74% for F. parviflora and F. macrophylla, respectively. Piperazine adipate presented an efficacy of 85.94% and 100% on the 18th and 28th day of the trial, respectively. Summary: Equine herpesvirus type‐1 (EHV‐1) and equine arteritis virus (EAV) are infectious agents that cause serious health risks to horse populations and are disbursed worldwide, which can lead to significant financial losses. In addition to being responsible for abortion and neonatal death, these viruses are associated with respiratory illness. Although previous research and reviews have been written on these viruses, both viruses still affect horse populations around the world and the vaccines currently available are not completely protective, especially against EHV‐1 and equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM). Moreover, EAV is considered a threat to the $102 billion equine industry in the United States. As a result, these viruses represent a huge threat to the horse industry and efforts geared towards preventing the outbreak of the disease are strongly encouraged. For this reason, updates about these viruses are necessary and require more and more discussion on the nature and characteristics of these viruses to know how to overcome them. Prevention and control of abortion and neonatal foal death caused by each of the two viruses depend on appropriate management strategies coupled with prophylactic vaccination. This review presents the latest detailed information on EHV‐1 and EAV from several aspects such as transmission, clinical signs, pathogenesis, latest developments on the treatment of the diseases, vaccination, and finally challenges and future perspectives. The information presented herein will be useful in understanding EHV‐1 and EAV and formulating policies that can help to limit the spread of these viruses within horse populations. Introduction: In recent years there has been public speculation about the breed, destination and number of horses being sold by public auction at livestock saleyards in Australia. Currently, there is little objective information available about the breed and condition of horses sold through this medium. With little publicly available objective data on these horses, the horse industry has been left vulnerable to misinformation. Accurate information regarding the composition and condition of horses attending saleyards is important to identify and address any welfare issues and to inform public debate. Method: Data were collected on 312 horses and ponies presented for sale through the Pakenham Horse Sales between July 2019 and March 2020. All horses and ponies were inspected at the saleyards and information on breed, age, body condition score (BCS), purchaser and sale price were recorded as the animals were auctioned. Results: Crossbred horses and ponies were the largest groups presented for sale. Ponies were more likely to be sold to private buyers. Quarter horses and riding ponies were as likely to be sent to slaughter as thoroughbreds and standardbreds. Entire males and females sold for lower prices than geldings. Most horses and ponies (64%) were sold to private buyers. More than three‐quarters (77%) of horses and ponies presented for sale had a BCS greater than or equal to three out of five. Conclusion: This pilot study challenges perceptions that thoroughbreds are the primary breed to attend public sales or that animals attending the sales are in poor condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: A 3‐year‐old Thoroughbred filly presented with a several‐month history of weight loss, polydipsia and polyuria, intermittent diarrhoea and behavioural changes and intermittently uncoordinated gait. Neurological examination revealed hyperexcitability, bilaterally reduced pupillary light reflexes and quadrilateral ataxia with proprioceptive deficits more obvious in the forelimbs than in the hindlimbs. A multifocal neurological lesion was suspected. The laboratory finding of a persistent hyperchloraemia and an apparent negative anion gap prompted measurement of serum bromide concentration and subsequently confirmed bromide intoxication. Further questioning of the trainer revealed that the filly had been administered oral potassium bromide for behavioural modification over several months. Clinical signs of bromide intoxication resolved within 20 days following the last bromide administration, without specific medical intervention. Equine influenza virus (EIV) is a major infectious pathogen causing significant respiratory signs in equids worldwide. Voluntary surveillances in the United States recently reported EIV detection in horses with respiratory signs even with adequate vaccine protocols and biosecurity programs and posed a concern about suboptimal effectiveness of EIV vaccine in the United States. This study aims to determine the genetic characteristics of 58 field EIV H3N8 strains in the United States from 2012 to 2017 using the phylogenetic analysis based on the haemagglutinin (HA) gene. Amino acid substitution and acquisition of N‐glycosylation of the HA gene were also evaluated. Phylogenetic analysis identified that almost all US field strains belonged to the Florida clade 1 (FC1) except one Florida clade 2 strain from a horse imported in 2014. US EIV strains in 2017 shared 11 fixed amino acid substitutions in the HA gene, compared to the vaccine strain (A/equine/Ohio/2003), and two additional amino acid substitutions were detected in 2019. The introduction of foreign EIV strains into the United States was not detected, but antigenic drift without acquisition of N‐glycosylation in the HA gene was observed in US field strains until 2017. Considering the global dominance of FC1 strains, subsequent antigenic drift of US EIV strains should be monitored for better effectiveness of the EIV vaccine in the United States and global equine industries. The purpose of this study was to identify the demographic characteristics, career motivations, and professional development of American equine journalists. An online survey was distributed to equine journalists identified through their professional organizational membership. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Equine journalists were found to be predominately female, Caucasian, and averaged 53 years old. Nearly half were exposed to the equine industry prior to their career and have been working in the industry for over 15 years. Respondents were well educated and were most motivated towards their career as an equine journalist because of their interest in horses. Over 70% of equine journalists in this study participated in one to 10 professional developments in the last year, with social media management as the most frequently reported topic. Other frequently reported topics were marketing, journalistic writing, and magazine publication. Recommendations for practice include recruiting agricultural communications minor or certificate students from specialized programs such as animal science, equine science, equine studies, or livestock. Summary: Abortion in mares can be a financially devastating event to horse owners and the equine industry. In this case report, we describe the gross, histopathological and microbiological findings associated with an abortion caused by Salmonella enterica subsp. arizonae, which should be considered in cases of abortion and metritis. Gross and histopathological evaluation of fetal and placental tissue were consistent with ascending septic placentitis resulting in fetal septicaemia. S. enterica subsp. arizonae was isolated from the placenta, lung and fetal gastric contents. Diagnosis was confirmed by MALDI‐TOF MS. To our knowledge, this subspecies of S. enterica has not been previously reported as an isolate in a case of late‐term equine abortion. A retrospective search of abortion cases at our institution was done, and no similar cases were identified for comparison. This case demonstrates S. enterica subsp. arizonae, although not previously reported as a cause of abortion in pregnant mares and uncommonly isolated from equids in the literature, may cause late‐term abortions in susceptible animals. This pathogen should be considered in cases of abortion outbreaks on a farm and merits investigation of the carrier status of mares within a herd. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the past 20 years, there has been a contraction in the New Zealand Thoroughbred industry and, to a lesser extent, within the Standardbred industry. These changes have seen an increasing proportion of the market being associated with fewer larger commercial farms. Many of these farms manage their own mares, and the mares and foals of several clients. This, in turn, has increased the similarity of the management of breeding and young stock within New Zealand. The temperate climate allows the majority of the management of breeding and young stock to be pasture based. The predominant pasture is ryegrass-clover mix that has been demonstrated to provide adequate nutrition for growth and development. The temperate climate also permits management of horses at pasture year round, which is proposed to stimulate development of the musculoskeletal system. Apart from a brief period during weaning, most young stock remain at pasture from birth until the start of yearling preparation. Free access to pasture exercise provides the opportunity to stimulate the musculoskeletal system for the future challenges as a racehorse. The export focus of many of the equine industries heavily influences the management decisions. Despite the availability of good-quality pasture post-weaning, many foals receive up to 50% of the daily dietary energy requirement as concentrates, possibly reflecting the emphasis on early sales as yearlings and the drive to optimise growth. The observations of drench resistance of common internal parasites presents an emerging problem for pasture-based production systems. Alarge proportion of the Thoroughbred foal crop is exported as yearlings or ready to run 2-year-olds. There is an increasing trend for Standardbreds to be sold as yearlings and this has resulted in changes in the management of Standardbred young stock. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) is one of the most important and prevalent viral pathogens of horses and a major threat to the equine industry throughout most of the world. EHV-1 primarily causes respiratory disease but viral spread to distant organs enables the development of more severe sequelae; abortion and neurologic disease. The virus can also undergo latency during which viral genes are minimally expressed, and reactivate to produce lytic infection at any time. Recently, there has been a trend of increasing numbers of outbreaks of a devastating form of EHV-1, equine herpesviral myeloencephalopathy. This review presents detailed information on EHV-1, from the discovery of the virus to latest developments on treatment and control of the diseases it causes. We also provide updates on recent EHV-1 research with particular emphasis on viral biology which enables pathogenesis in the natural host. Equine influenza (EI) is the main cause of respiratory illness in equines across the globe and is caused by equine influenza A virus (EIV-A), which has impacted the equine industry internationally because of the marginal mortality and high morbidity. In the present study, the immune responses after equine influenza vaccination were evaluated in 4,144 horses in Korea using the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay. The equine influenza virus (EIV), A/equine/South Africa/4/03 (H3N8), was used as the antigen in the HI assay. The mean seropositive rates were 89.2% (97.4% in 2016, 77.6% in 2017, and 92.4% in 2018). Use of transabdominal ultrasonography in the acute abdomen: Has it really revolutionised our colic work-ups? The equine practitioner is familiar with the routine colic work-up, which generally at minimum includes a physical exam, rectal exam and nasogastric intubation. Although not the aim of the study, the authors did observe that horses having primary large-intestinal lesions did have large colon walls that were subjectively more distended and hyperechoic as compared with clinically normal horses; however, at that time they stated that other than for nephrosplenic entrapments, abdominal ultrasonography was non-diagnostic for primary large colon lesions. They concluded that ultrasonography can help to distinguish between small and large intestinal lesions: finding small intestinal loops that are completely distended (round shape) and lacking motility is highly related to a definitive diagnosis of strangulating obstruction, while finding partially distended small intestinal loops (square shape) with reduced or normal contractility is related to a large intestinal lesion. In recent years, outbreaks of exotic as well as newly emerging infectious diseases have highlighted the importance of biosecurity for the Australian horse industry. As the first potentially fatal zoonosis transmissible from horses to humans in Australia, Hendra virus has emphasised the need to incorporate sound hygiene and general biosecurity practices into day-to-day horse management. Recommended measures are widely publicised, but implementation is at the discretion of the individual owner. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine current levels of biosecurity of horse owners and to identify factors influencing the uptake of practices utilising data from an online survey. Level of biosecurity (low, medium, high), as determined by horse owners’ responses to a set of questions on the frequency of various biosecurity practices performed around healthy (9 items) and sick horses (10 items), was used as a composite outcome variable in ordinal logistic regression analyses. The majority of horse owners surveyed were female (90%), from the states of Queensland (45%) or New South Wales (37%), and were involved in either mainly competitive/equestrian sports (37%) or recreational horse activities (35%). Seventy-five percent of owners indicated that they follow at least one-third of the recommended practices regularly when handling their horses, resulting in medium to high levels of biosecurity. Main factors associated with a higher level of biosecurity were high self-rated standard of biosecurity, access to personal protective equipment, absence of flying foxes in the local area, a good sense of control over Hendra virus risk, likelihood of discussing a sick horse with a veterinarian and likelihood of suspecting Hendra virus in a sick horse. Comparison of the outcome variable with the self-rated standard of biosecurity showed that over- as well as underestimation occurred. This highlights the need for continuous communication and education to enhance awareness and understanding of what biosecurity is and how it aligns with good horsemanship. The horse industry has soared in Europe in the last decades. This article analyses the existing and possible interactions between horses and rangelands, by taking horse feeding as well as environmental and socio-economic issues into consideration. Due to the amount of recent data available for France, this country serves as a case study for the EU. Even though rangeland-based feeding is common in traditional horse-farming systems and still exists today on some pastoral farms, most horses are fed on conserved forage and concentrates, especially when the economic value of the horse is high. Scientific literature and recent field data suggest that rangelands can be used as the main feed source for mares and growing horses, providing not only nutrition but also a suitable environment for training and welfare. Horses can contribute to the sustainable development of rangelands, if they are well integrated into the local agricultural context and if horse grazing is carefully managed. To achieve this, a better integration of horses in the agricultural sector (from the field to research activities) is needed. An issue of utmost importance is the access of horse owners to land and technical support, taking into account that horses are herbivores similar to ruminants, as well as the peculiarities of the horse industry. Human-horse interactions have a rich tradition and can be highly rewarding, particularly within sport and recreation pursuits, but they can also be dangerous or even life-threatening. In parallel, sport and recreation pursuits involving animals, including horses, are facing an increased level of public scrutiny in relation to the use of animals for these purposes. However, the challenge lies with event organisers to reconcile the expectations of the public, the need to meet legal requirements to reduce or eliminate risks to paid and volunteer workers, and address horse welfare. In this article we explore incident management at horse events as an example of a situation where volunteers and horses can be placed at risk during a rescue. We introduce large animal rescue skills as a solution to improving worker safety and improving horse welfare outcomes. Whilst there are government and horse industry initiatives to improve safety and address animal welfare, there remains a pressing need to invest in a strong communication plan which will improve the safety of workplaces in which humans and horses interact. Congenital hypothyroidism and dysmaturity syndrome ( CHD) in neonatal foals was first described in western Canada in 1981 and remains an important problem for the western Canadian horse industry. This syndrome is characterised by hyperplasia of the thyroid gland, increased gestational length and multiple congenital musculoskeletal abnormalities. This case series describes the first confirmed cases of CHD in Europe and challenges contemporary opinion which suggests that this syndrome is distinct from congenital hypothyroidism associated with visible goitre. Simple Summary: The road transport of horses poses a significant welfare issue. This study describes the injuries sustained by horses during road transport in New Zealand in general alongside factors associated with injury while in a moving vehicle. More than 1100 New Zealand horse industry participants were surveyed on their horse transport experiences and equine industry activities. Of the survey participants, approximately a fifth reported at least one horse injured during road transport during the two years covered by the survey. Most injuries (81%) occurred in transit when transported with one (39%) or more than one (21%) other horse. Most commonly, the hindlimbs, the head, or the forelimbs were injured (59% of horses). Injuries ranged from bruises to severe trauma. Factors associated with injury included horses used for eventing, not always checking the fitness of horses for transport, the use of a tail guard or bandage, a stallion guard in the vehicle, loose bedding on the floor, and behavioural problems. Overall, this survey identified a significant number of injuries and related euthanasia in horses transported by road in New Zealand and key factors associated with these injuries. Negative outcomes associated with the road transport of horses are a significant welfare issue. This study aimed to describe the injuries sustained by horses during road transport in New Zealand and factors associated with trauma while in transit. New Zealand horse industry participants were surveyed on their horse transport experiences and equine industry involvement. Participants were solicited through horse organisations. The data were tabulated, and a logistic regression was performed to identify significant (p < 0.05) factors associated with transport-related injury. In total, 201/1133 (17.7%/2 years) eligible surveys reported at least one horse injured during road transport. Most incidents occurred in transit (137/169; 81%), or when transported with one (76/193; 39.4%) or more (41/193; 21.2%) other horses. Most commonly, the hindlimbs, the head, or the forelimbs were injured (59.1%; 110/186 horses), ranging in severity from bruises to catastrophic orthopaedic trauma necessitating euthanasia. Eventing, not always checking horses' fitness for transport, using a tail guard or bandage, a stallion guard in the vehicle, bedding type on the floor, and behavioural problems were associated with injuries. Abstract: Pulmonary diseases are common in horses and have a major economic impact on the equine industry. Some of them could be associated with an inadequate immune response in the lung, but methods to evaluate this response in horses are lacking. The aim of this study was to develop and validate an experimental model that could be applied in several physiological and pathological conditions to assess the innate immune response of equine pulmonary cells. Equine alveolar macrophages (AMs) obtained from bronchoalveolar lavages were isolated from other cells by adhesion. TLR2, 3, and 4 expression in AMs was studied and their responses to commercial ligands (respectively FSL-1, Poly(I:C), and LPS) were evaluated after determination of the appropriate dose and time of incubation. TLR responses were assessed by measuring cytokine production using (1) gene expression of TNFα, IFNβ, Il-1β, and IFNα by qPCR (indirect method); and (2) cytokine production for TNFα and IFNβ by ELISA (direct method). TLR 2, 3, and 4 were expressed by AMs. TLR 2 stimulation with 10ng/mL of FSL-1 during 3h significantly increased IL-1β and TNFα gene expression. TLR 3 stimulation with 1000ng/mL of Poly(I:C) during 1h increased IFNβ, IFNα, Il-1β and TNFα expression. TLR 4 stimulation with 100ng/mL of LPS during 3h increased TNFα, IFNβ, and Il-1β expression. Results obtained by ELISA quantification of TNFα and IFNβ produced by AMs following stimulation during 6h were similar: FSL-1 increased TNFα production but not IFNβ, Poly(I:C) and LPS increased production of IFNβ and TNFα. In conclusion, pulmonary innate immunity of horses can be assessed ex vivo by measuring cytokine production following stimulation of AMs with TLR agonists. This experimental model could be applied under several conditions especially to improve the understanding of equine respiratory disease pathogenesis, and to suggest novel therapeutic opportunities. Abstract: Abrupt dietary transitions and feeding of rapidly fermentable diets are common practices in the horse industry and have been associated with digestive and metabolic disorders that can impair the performance of horses. The present study investigated the effect of dietary transition from pasture grazing to confinement with concentrate feeding, and back, on fecal pH and bacterial populations of Streptococcus spp and Lactobacillus spp. Six Thoroughbred fillies, previously grazing perennial ryegrass and white clover-based pasture, were housed in individual stalls and fed an increasing ratio of concentrate to conserved forages for 13 days (days 1-13), followed by an abrupt transition back to only pasture-grazing for 3 days (days 14-16). The concentrate was initially offered at 0.83 kg dry matter (DM)/d and increased to 5 kg DM/d, whereas ensiled alfalfa was initially offered at 0.61 kg DM/d, increasing to 1.22 kg DM/d. Meadow hay was initially offered at 6.73 kg DM/d, decreasing to 1.6 kg DM/d. Fecal specimens were collected daily for determination of pH, and every 2 days for quantitative analysis of Streptococcus spp and Lactobacillus spp. Mean fecal pH increased significantly from pasture baseline values (pH 6.18) during the initial confinement and supplementation on day 1 (6.37), day 2 (6.52), day 3 (6.58), and day 4 (6.43) (standard error of mean [SEM]: 0.056; P < .001). By day 5, mean fecal pH values had decreased to, and remained at, baseline values until the horses returned to pasture, when another increase occurred at day 15 (6.45). Fecal colony forming units (cfu) of Streptococcus spp and Lactobacillus spp increased linearly (r = 0.94; P < .001) from 6.0 and 6.1 log10 cfu/g on day -4, to 7.8 log10 cfu/g on day 14 (SEM: 0.2 P < .001), respectively. Fecal cfu decreased on return to a pasture-only diet (P < .001). In this study, the increment of bacterial populations was associated with a relatively stable fecal pH and highlights the difficulty in identifying the effects of dietary transition on the equine hindgut health, without microbial culture. Abstract: We conducted a cross-sectional survey to determine the demographic characteristics of non-commercial horses in New Zealand. A sampling frame of properties with non-commercial horses was derived from the national farms database, AgriBase™. Horse properties were stratified by property size and a generalised random-tessellated stratified (GRTS) sampling strategy was used to select properties (n =2912) to take part in the survey. The GRTS sampling design allowed for the selection of properties that were spatially balanced relative to the distribution of horse properties throughout the country. The registered decision maker of the property, as identified in AgriBase™, was sent a questionnaire asking them to describe the demographic characteristics of horses on the property, including the number and reason for keeping horses, as well as information about other animals kept on the property and the proximity of boundary neighbours with horses. The response rate to the survey was 38% (1044/2912) and the response rate was not associated with property size or region. A total of 5322 horses were kept for recreation, competition, racing, breeding, stock work, or as pets. The reasons for keeping horses and the number and class of horses varied significantly between regions and by property size. Of the properties sampled, less than half kept horses that could have been registered with Equestrian Sports New Zealand or either of the racing codes. Of the respondents that reported knowing whether their neighbours had horses, 58.6% (455/776) of properties had at least one boundary neighbour that kept horses. The results of this study have important implications for New Zealand, which has an equine population that is naïve to many equine diseases considered endemic worldwide. The ability to identify, and apply accurate knowledge of the population at risk to infectious disease control strategies would lead to more effective strategies to control and prevent disease spread during an exotic, infectious disease outbreak, but could also highlight groups within the population that require targeted surveillance. Background: Ireland has long been renowned as a major centre for the breeding, rearing and keeping of horses. Since 2007, however, there has been increasing concern for horse health and welfare standards, and links between these concerns and the structures, governance and funding of the Irish equine industries have been reported. This paper addresses two central issues: firstly the local governance of, trade in and disposal of unwanted horses; and secondly mechanisms employed to improve standards of care given to horses owned by certain communities. Method: Primary information was gathered through visits to horse pounds run by and on behalf of Local Authorities, to social horse projects, to horse dealer yards, ferry ports, horse slaughter plants and knackeries. Results: The approach adopted by members of a given group, e.g. ferry ports, is described and differences are highlighted, for example in how different Local Authorities implement the Control of Horses Act of 1986, and how the choice, for example, of disposal route affects the standard of animal welfare. Conclusions: There is a pressing need for a more centrally mandated and uniformly applied system of governance to safeguard the health and promote the keeping of horses to a higher welfare standard in Ireland. Fundamental to an understanding of why there is insufficient oversight of the keeping and proper disposal of horses is the lack of a comprehensive, integrated system for the registration, identification and tracing of equidae in Ireland. Abstract: Horse-riding is a particularly dangerous activity for children especially before they have accrued significant riding experience. It is reasonable to suppose that children in this relatively naïve group would be riding ponies and, accordingly, they and their caregivers are the target market for ponies presented for sale. We examined whether there was a relationship between the use of descriptive terms associated with pony safety and the advertised price. This would indicate that vendors valued safety characteristics in their pricing decisions in the Australian pony market. We examined the Ponies and Pony Club sections in 6 consecutive 2009 editions of Horse Deals, the leading Australian horse trading magazine. A pilot analysis identified 66 descriptive terms and phrases that vendors used to describe their ponies. These descriptors were assigned to 4 categories based on the extent to which they communicated a behavioral or biological characteristic of the pony relevant to rider/handler safety. Of these 4 categories, 3 reflected degrees of perceived positive assurance and the fourth contained covert warning (negative) descriptors. Data on price, descriptors, and other characteristics (age, height, gender, color, breed, registration, experience) were gathered for 875 advertisements. A linear regression model analysis revealed that price significantly increased with factors such as height and stated experience in showing and dressage (P < 0.001). Positive descriptors were not associated with an increased asking price in the Ponies or in Pony Club markets. However, there was a significant decrease in asking price (P < 0.05) for every warning descriptor that appeared in advertisements. We concluded that safety descriptors do not contribute to pricing of ponies in the Australian horse market but warnings about possible unsafe aspects of the animal can have a deleterious effect on pricing decisions of pony vendors. Our findings concur with previous research carried out in other horse markets and may provide further evidence that vendors value characteristics that are different from those valued by buyers. We recommend that the potential purchasers in these markets become better informed of the importance of safety and predictability in animals bred and trained to be ridden by younger riders. From 1870 to 1910 the numbers of horses used for agricultural purposes in Great Britain steadily rose, before a notable reduction when these horses were commandeered for military service during World War I. During the 1920s numbers dramatically declined as the horse's contribution to the agricultural industry, assisting in the cultivation of land and crops, was no longer required and the development of the internal combustion engine diminished the horse's role in transport. As a result of these changes the way in which the public viewed the horse altered and the role of the horse began to transform. Since World War II the horse has become a recreational and sporting animal, rather than a beast of burden. Estimates suggest there are presently in excess of 1 million horses in Great Britain, with around 4.3 million riders. This paper focuses on the transformation of the horse, explaining its socio-economic importance in Britain and examining how the Government's view of the horse has changed during this time. A three-round Policy Delphi using vignette methodology was employed as a new approach to study stakeholder perceptions and experiences of equine welfare. Forty-four representatives from stakeholder groups in the Irish equine industry participated. In Round 1, vignettes (narratives illustrating potential infringements of equine welfare) were presented to assess perceptions of 'Acceptability' and experiences of 'Frequency of occurrence'. In Round 2, lists of situations where equine welfare might be compromised, possible drivers of behaviour and potential solutions were presented for grading. In Round 3, two composite issues were formed from an analysis of responses to the previous round, namely (1) the disposal of horses trade, and (2) behaviour at unregulated gatherings; these were illustrated using vignettes to establish stakeholder attitudes to the desirability, feasibility and means of improving standards of welfare for horses. Equine herpesvirus-1 is a highly prevalent and frequently pathogenic infection of equids. The most serious clinical consequences of infection are abortion and equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM). In recent years, there has been an apparent increase in the incidence of EHM in North America, with serious consequences for horses and the horse industry. Abstract: Viral diseases constitute an ever growing threat to the horse industry worldwide because of the rapid movement of large numbers of horses for competition and breeding. A number of different types of vaccines are available for protective immunization of horses against viral diseases. Traditional inactivated and live-attenuated (modified live virus, MLV) virus vaccines remain popular and efficacious but recombinant vaccines are increasingly being developed and used, in part because of the perceived deficiencies of some existing products. New generation vaccines include MLVs with deletions and/or mutations of critical genes, subunit vaccines that incorporate immunogenic proteins (or portions thereof) or expression vectors that produce these proteins as immunogens, and DNA vaccines. New generation vaccines have been developed for several viral diseases of horses. We recently have developed an alphavirus replicon-vectored equine arteritis virus (EAV) vaccine, and evaluated a commercial canary pox virus-vectored vaccine for West Nile disease. The success of these new-generation vaccines has catalyzed efforts to develop improved vaccines for the prevention of African horse sickness, a disease of emerging global significance. Simple Summary: The aim of this study was to provide information about horses and ponies in equine-assisted services (EAS), particularly in the areas of selection, longevity, and retirement as little published information exists about this sector of the United States horse industry. Survey results revealed centers do use selection procedures when evaluating horses which often included initial screenings and trial periods. Horses are active in programs from anywhere less than a year to over 20 years. The greatest number of horses are active for 1–6 or 7–10 years. Horses are retired for a variety of reasons. The most common reasons include unsoundness, behavior, and other health issues. We conclude behavior, soundness, and health are key considerations when selecting and retiring horses in EAS. These areas should be focused on at an individual horse level in future research efforts. The information presented in this article helps us understand the horses in EAS programs, provides a starting point for future research, and begins to explore the unique needs of programs and horses in EAS. Little published information exists on the horses in equine-assisted services (EAS), particularly their selection, longevity, and retirement. The purpose of this study was to characterize horses and procedures used in EAS. A pilot survey was developed using focus group discussions and distributed to Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International (PATH Intl) centers in Florida (n = 45, Part I) before further modification and distribution to members of PATH Intl., American Hippotherapy Association (AHA), eagala, and Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) (n = 26,000, Part II). Response rates were 36% (Part I) and 0.7% (Part II). Centers report a median of 10 (Part I) or 9 (Part II) horses and ponies. Selection procedures included initial screening (Part I = 100%, Part II = 96%), pre-purchase or pre-donation exam (I = 64%, II = 60%), acclimation period (I = 100%, II = 84%), trial period (I = 91%, II = 90%), and other (II = 11%). Horses remained active in programs for less than a year to over 20 years with the greatest number working 7–10 (Part I) or 1–6 (Part II) yr. In Part I of the study, behavior (44%) was the leading cause of retirement followed by unsoundness (33%). In Part II, unsoundness was the highest ranked response followed by behavior. Simple Summary: The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for equine transport-related problem behaviors (TRPBs) and injuries in support of the development of best practices that minimize their occurrence. An online cross-sectional survey was designed and disseminated to equine industry members in Italy. Respondents were asked if one of their horses exhibited TRPBs or sustained transport injuries during the two previous years, and to describe their equine background, experience, transport vehicles, and practices. TRPBs were reported by 14.45% of respondents. Sedation and coercive equipment (i.e., whip) use for loading were confirmed to be major risk factors for horse injuries (17/148; 11.49%). Horse injuries were also associated with a lack of checks of the vehicle brakes, and vehicle design (i.e., rubber mat and chest bar). During 50% of the accidents described, horses and handlers were simultaneously injured. These results may be useful to safeguard horse and handler well-being by educating people in charge of moving horses on transport risks and best practices. An online survey was conducted to determine associations between equine transport management and transport-related injuries and problem behaviors in Italy. The survey was composed of four sections: respondents' demographic information and background, transport management practices, journey details and vehicle design, and transport injuries experienced by the horse in the previous two-year period. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression with a binary outcome variable was performed to explore associations between variables (respondents' and journeys' details and transport practices) and equine transport-related problem behaviors (TRPBs) and injuries. TRPBs were also considered an explanatory variable for injuries. The survey generated 201 responses; only 148 were complete and analyzed. TRPBs were reported by 14.45% of the respondents and the odds of TRPBs was linked to the respondent gender (p = 0.034), the use of tranquilizers prior to transport (p = 0.002), the use of a whip for loading (p = 0.049), the lack of protection equipment (p = 0.050), and shavings (p = 0.025) on the vehicle floor. Horse injuries (11.49%) were reported by more respondents who did not check the brakes of their transport vehicle before traveling (p = 0.043), had vehicles with padding on the chest bar (p = 0.038), and for horses reported to display TRPBs (p = 0.001). Finally, 10 respondents reported they were injured during horse transport (10/140; 7.14%), 50% simultaneously with their horses. The study findings should be interpreted with caution due to small sample size bias and participants' recall bias. Nevertheless, the results are in concordance with the literature, confirming that horse transport is a risk for the horse's and handler's health and well-being. Those in the equine community have a strong desire for knowledge in the quest to provide the best care for their horses. Unfortunately, they often seek out advice through on-line sources and are quick to take anecdotal evidence or testimonials as fact. While those in the scientific community would encourage decisions to be made based upon quality research, often there are insufficient data available to answer questions posed by the industry. One of the reasons for this is limited resources. In the past it was common to have departmental-funded assistantships for graduate students. However, those assistantships have disappeared in many departments and now students are often supported through grants. Likewise, there is additional pressure by administrators for federal funding though "horse research" is often considered less important to such funding agencies as horses are viewed as recreational animals as opposed to being a food-producing animals. Hence, much funded equine research would fall under the category of product-testing. While somewhat limited in scope, such research may provide the opportunity to answer other research questions if projects are appropriately planned. However, such "sideprojects" are only useful if adequate subject numbers and controls are in place. Reduced animal availability and increased costs of utilizing horses in research may necessitate using other animal models for horses to answer fundamental questions and, if appropriately designed, may allow projects to be competitive for federal funding. Especially as it pertains to junior faculty, collaborative research utilizing colleagues with specialized skills can be important in terms of promoting competitive and fundamental research proposals. While limited resources may increase the appeal for low-cost studies, there is still a need for well-designed studies that answer questions critical to the horse industry and doing quality research is important to enhance the reputation of equine research. Simple Summary: Scientific interest in animal welfare was initially driven by popular emotional, ethics and political concerns. It has now become an important societal question and all the stakeholders agree on the necessity to rely on unambiguous scientific evidence for evaluation and making decisions. Animal welfare is defined as a chronic state reflecting an animal's subjective perception of its situation indicated by behavioural, postural and physiological parameters. Because of their multiple statuses (as farm, leisure, sport or pet animals), horses experience a large variety of more or less adequate environmental conditions that present risks of impairing their welfare. The aim of this review is to disentangle welfare parameters and to differentiate reliable animal-based indicators of horses' welfare from potential signals of acute sickness, discomfort, temporary states of pain, stress or emotion that are not based on popular beliefs in order to provide the equine industry with appropriate guidelines and recommendations. Animal welfare is defined as a chronic state reflecting an individual's subjective perception of its situation. Because it is possible to be in a good welfare state and nevertheless experience acute fear or pain, and conversely, short-term positive emotions can be experienced during impaired welfare states, welfare as a chronic state has to be clearly distinguished from temporary states related to emotions, pain or stress. The evaluation of non-verbal individuals' welfare state, particularly in interspecific situations, is a real challenge that necessarily implies animal-based measures and requires multidisciplinary scientifically validated measures. In the last decade, studies investigating horses' welfare flourished together with new measures that were not always scientifically tested before being used. At a time were legal decisions are made on animal welfare, it is crucial to rely on reliable welfare indicators in order to prevent false evaluation. The aim of this review is to identify the scientifically tested and reliable indicators of horses' welfare (e.g., body lesions, apathy, aggressiveness, stereotypic behaviours) from signals of temporary states related to acute pain emotions or stress and from popular beliefs, in order to give the scientific community and the horse industry accurate evaluation tools. Respiratory diseases cause significant economic losses (especially in the horse racing industry). The present study describes the detection and genetic characteristics of equine herpesvirus (EHV) from a total of 1497 samples from clinically healthy horses in Korea, including 926 blood samples, 187 lung tissues, and 384 nasal swabs. EHV-2 and EHV-5 were detected in 386 (41.7%; 95% CI: 38.5–44.9) and 201 (21.7%; 95% CI: 19.1–24.4) blood samples, respectively, and in 25 (13.4%; 95% CI: 8.5–18.2) and 35 (18.7%; 95% CI: 13.1–24.3) lung tissues, respectively. EHV-1 and EHV-4 were not detected in either blood or lung tissues. EHV-1, EHV-2, and EHV-5 were detected in 46 (12.0%; 95% CI: 8.7–15.2), 21 (5.5%; 95% CI: 3.2–7.7), and 43 (11.2%; 95% CI: 8.0–14.4) nasal swabs, respectively. EHV-4 was not detected in nasal swabs. Co-infection with EHV-2 and EHV-5 was detected in 11.6% (107/926) of the blood samples and 6.4% (12/187) of lung tissues. In nasal swabs, co-infection with EHV-1, EHV-2, and EHV-5 was detected in 0.8% (3/384) of samples. Phylogenetic analysis of the glycoprotein B gene showed that EHV-1, EHV-2, and EHV-5 strains demonstrated significant genetic diversity in Korea, with a nucleotide sequence identity among them that ranged from 95.7% to 100% for EHV-1, 96.2–100% for EHV-2, and 93.8–99.3% for EHV-5. These results are the first phylogenetic analyses of EHV-1 in Korea in nasal swabs from a nationwide population of clinically healthy horses. Simple Summary: Equines have a peculiar place in our society. From livestock to sport, through to landscape managers and leisure partners, equines show a wide range of little-known environmental advantages and assets. Today's wake-up calls about the environment are progressively putting pressure on stakeholders of the agricultural sector, including the equine industry. This study focusses on the main environmental consequences of equine use and possession in Europe based on scientific and technical sources under the lens of five leading sectors where equines show unique impacts as green assets. Now, more than ever before, it is important to highlight the role of equines as a green alternative in political debates and management practices to give them the place equines deserve in the ecological transition of agriculture. Despite the decline of equine populations in the middle of the 20th century, the European horse industry is growing again thanks to economic alternatives found in the diversification of the uses of equines (sports, racing, leisure, etc.). Equines have many environmental advantages, but the fragmentation of the sector and the lack of synthetic knowledge about their environmental impacts do not enable the promotion of these assets and their effective inclusion in management practices and European policies. To highlight the equine environmental impacts, a literature review was carried out to cover the main European stakes. This work led to the identification of five "green assets", fields where equines show unique environmental advantages compared to other agricultural productions. These green assets are linked to the nature of equines (grazing and domestic biodiversity), to their geographical distribution (land use), and to their use by human beings (tourism and work). Today, when searching for sustainable solutions to modern environmental issues, the use of equines is a neglected green alternative. Better knowledge and use of equine green assets could partly respond to more ecological agricultural needs and contribute to the development of this animal industry, which has a place in regional development and in Europe's sustainable transition. Simple Summary: Throughout horse industry modernization, sport horse breeds have been genetically evolved in accordance to their abilities in sport disciplines providing an opportunity to study selection signatures in the genome level. Future selection strategies of sport horse breeds can be optimized by improving our knowledge of genomic signatures of selection. The main goals of this study are identifying and investigating the genes and their biological pathways underlying selective pressures in sport and non-sport horse breeds. Here, we detected 49 genes as selective signals using fixation index, nucleotide diversity and Tajima's D approaches. Intriguingly, our findings in functional enrichment analysis revealed the selection footprints related to musculoskeletal system development. Detected candidate genes and biological pathways in this study may be helpful to widen our perspective in recent breeding efforts and genomic evolutionary mechanisms in sport horse breeds. Selective breeding has led to gradual changes at the genome level of horses. Deciphering selective pressure patterns is progressive to understand how breeding strategies have shaped the sport horse genome; although, little is known about the genomic regions under selective pressures in sport horse breeds. The major goal of this study was to shed light on genomic regions and biological pathways under selective pressures in sport horses. In this study, whole-genome sequences of 16 modern sport and 35 non-sport horses were used to investigate the genomic selective signals of sport performance, by employing fixation index, nucleotide diversity, and Tajima's D approaches. The functional enrichment analysis for candidate genes revealed novel significant biological processes related to musculoskeletal system development, such as limb development and morphogenesis, having been targeted by selection in sport breeds. According to American Horse Council statistics there are approximately 9 million horses in the U.S., and the equine industry contributes approximately $102 billion in indirect economic impact. Of the total number of horses approximately 45% are categorized as "Recreation", 30% "Showing", 10% "Racing", 15% "Other". However, I suggest that there are probably about 10% in the "showing" segment and 5% in the "other" segment that also could be classified in the "recreational" segment, resulting in approximately 60% of the horses in the U.S. falling into the recreational use segment. For purposes of this discussion I am defining the "equine industry" as any entity that provides goods and/or services to horse owners. So, how does the industry define the "back yard" or recreational horse owner? From an industry perspective the back-yard owner may participate in local or even regional organized events, competitions or shows. Their participation varies from occasional to regular yet seasonal. They also participate in recreational riding in parks or neighboring country side. The recreational owner does not view horse ownership as an income or business opportunity. Their buying decisions are based on dispensable income and not based on a business perspective of value or return on investment. However, that does not mean they are not immune to price sensitivity. Given this demographic perspective the back yard / recreational horse owner represents the majority of horse ownership in the U.S., and it is to this segment that industry hopes to glean much benefit from its product development and marketing investment. Amongst these efforts resides some interesting questions such as; what does the recreational horse owner drive the industry to provide (this is what we want), what does the industry drive the horse owner to desire (this is what you need if you want the best), and where can the recreational owner get the best information to make the best decision? Obviously, the recreational horse owner is of importance to the equine industry. How the industry can best foster, serve and grow the recreational segment provides ample opportunity for discussion and debate. Perhaps for the equine industry the answer may be as simple as making sure the recreational owner can easily answer the question "is this of benefit to the horse and/or the people that care for them"? Surveys of the horse industry have been undertaken more frequently in recent years with the realization that it has a significant economic impact on individual states and the nation as a whole. Our survey of Connecticut's horse industry was designed to arrive at an accurate horse count and determine the demographic and economic characteristics of Connecticu'ts horse industry. In order to gather this data, three survey instruments were developed: one for veterinarians to determine the horse count, one for horse owners to describe the industry's demographic characteristics, and one for businesses to evaluate economic impact of the industry. Included in the horse owners' survey were questions about the owner's willingness to sell the horse at fair market value. One of the fundamental limitations of previous horse surveys is that enumeration of horses is based on a survey of owners. With the incomplete nature of mailing lists, it is difficult to predict the margin of error using this method. By surveying a complete mailing list of veterinarians obtained from the state veterinary association, we determined that there are approximately 43,059 horses in Connecticut. This number correlates well with anecdotal reports. Of horse owners surveyed, 80% would not be willing to sell their horses at fair market value. The implication is that any statewide value of horses based on market prices alone is likely to seriously underestimate the true social value of horses. The methodology used in our survey may be of use to other states in order to get accurate horse counts and true values of horses. In addition to surveying veterinarians, a cross check of results could be obtained by surveying other service providers such as farriers or feed stores. The inclusion of the question about willingness to sell at fair market value question is also justified based on our findings. Finally, even though our three survey instruments attempt to reach the major interest groups associated with the industry, a wider population may need to be included to more accurately estimate the aesthetic and recreational value of horses.
