With the number of new satellites increasing dramatically, comprehensive space surveillance is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging of satellites can provide an in-situ assessment of the satellites. This paper demonstrates that pseudo-noise signals can also be used for satellite imaging, in addition to classical linear frequency-modulated chirp signals. Pseudo-noise transmission signals offer the advantage of very low cross-correlation values. This, for instance, enables the possibility of a system with multiple channels transmitting instantaneously. Furthermore, it can significantly reduce signal interference with other systems operating in the same frequency spectrum, which is of particular interest for high-bandwidth, high-power systems such as satellite imaging radars. A new routine has been introduced to generate a wideband pseudo-noise signal with a peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) similar to that of a chirp signal. This is essential for applications where the transmit signal power budget is sharply limited by the high-power amplifier. The attainment of a substantial aperture in the rotating synthetic aperture imaging system involves the rotation of a slender rectangular primary mirror. This constitutes a pivotal avenue of exploration in space telescope research. Due to the considerable aspect ratio of the primary mirror, environmental disturbances can significantly impact its surface shape. Active optical technology can rectify surface shape irregularities through the detection of wavefront information. The Phase Diversity (PD) method utilizes images captured by the imaging system to compute wavefront information. In this study, the PD method is applied to rotating synthetic and other rectangular aperture imaging systems, employing Legendre polynomials to model the wavefront. The UAV-borne video SAR (ViSAR) imaging system requires miniaturization, low power consumption, high frame rates, and high-resolution real-time imaging. In order to satisfy the requirements of real-time imaging processing for the UAV-borne ViSAR under limited memory and parallel computing resources, this paper proposes a method of embedded GPU-based real-time imaging processing for the UAV-borne ViSAR. Based on a parallel programming model of the compute unified device architecture (CUDA), this paper designed a parallel computing method for range-Doppler (RD) and map drift (MD) algorithms. By utilizing the advantages of the embedded GPU characterized with parallel computing, we improved the processing speed of real-time ViSAR imaging. This paper also adopted a unified memory management method, which greatly reduces data replication and communication latency between the CPU and the GPU. The data processing of 2048 × 2048 points took only 1.215 s on the Jetson AGX Orin platform to form a nine-consecutive-frame image with a resolution of 0.15 m, with each frame taking only 0.135 s, enabling real-time imaging at a high frame rate of 5 Hz. In actual testing, continuous mapping can be achieved without losing the scenes, intuitively obtaining the dynamic observation effects of the area. The processing results of the measured data have verified the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed scheme, satisfying the processing requirements for real-time ViSAR imaging. Hence, image processing techniques are necessary to enhance the image quality. Conventional squinted sliding spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging suffers from substantial swath width reduction and complex processing requirements due to the continuous variation in the squint angle and the large range cell migration (RCM) throughout the data acquisition interval. A novel two-dimensional (2D) beam scanning mode for high-resolution wide swath (HRWS) imaging is proposed. The key to the novel imaging mode lies in the synchronous scanning of azimuth and range beams, allowing for a broader and more flexible imaging swath with a high geometric resolution. Azimuth beam scanning from fore to aft was used to improve the azimuth resolution, while range beam scanning was adopted to illuminate the oblique wide swath to avoid the large RCM and the serious swath width reduction. Compared with the conventional sliding spotlight mode, both the swath width and swath length could be extended. According to the echo model of this imaging mode, an echo signal preprocessing approach is proposed. The key points of this approach are range data extension and azimuth data upsampling. A designed system example with a resolution of 0.5 m, swath width of 60 km, and azimuth coverage length of 134 km is presented. Furthermore, a simulation experiment on point targets was carried out. Terahertz video synthetic aperture radar (THz-ViSAR) has tremendous research and application value due to its high resolution and high frame rate imaging benefits. However, it requires more efficient imaging algorithms. Thus, a novel multistage back projection fast imaging algorithm for the THz-ViSAR system is proposed in this paper to enable continuous playback of images like video. The radar echo data of the entire aperture is first divided into multiple sub-apertures, as with the fast-factorized back projection algorithm (FFBP). However, there are two improvements in sub-aperture imaging. On the one hand, the back projection algorithm (BPA) is replaced by the polar format algorithm (PFA) to improve the sub-aperture imaging efficiency. The imaging process, on the other hand, uses the global Cartesian coordinate system rather than the local polar coordinate system, and the wavenumber domain data of the full aperture are obtained step by step through simple splicing and fusion, avoiding the amount of two-dimensional (2D) interpolation operations required for local polar coordinate system transformation in FFBP. Finally, 2D interpolation for full-resolution images is carried out to image the ground object targets in the same coordinate system due to the geometric distortion caused by linear phase error (LPE) and the mismatch of coordinate systems in different imaging frames. The simulation experiments of point targets and surface targets both verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm. The visibility samples generated by the synthetic aperture interferometric radiometer (SAIR) under near-field observation conditions contain information about the distance from the target to the instrument. This requires a precise understanding of the target–instrument distance to guarantee imaging quality in near-field SAIR applications. In this paper, we introduce a novel distance estimate approach for near-field SAIR systems, which achieves satisfactory imaging performance in the absence of prior information on target–instrument distance. First, we reformulate the signal model of near-field SAIR from the fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) perspective. This formulation ties the distance that is variable to the visibility function in a straightforward manner, offering an efficient solution for image reconstruction in near-field SAIR. Subsequently, we present an iterative strategy for target–instrument distance estimation based on simulated annealing (SA). In each iteration, the modified average gradient (MAG) of images reconstructed within the FRFT framework is evaluated, and based on the Metropolis criterion, the estimated target–instrument distance is optimally updated iteratively. Finally, the validity and effectiveness of the proposed distance estimation method for near-field SAIR imaging systems are demonstrated through numerical simulation and real experiments. This paper presents an imaging system based on ultrawideband microwave radars for the detection of bleeding regions and strokes inside the human head. The proposed system is portable and focuses on revealing bleeding areas with unpredictable shapes using polarimetric data acquisition. A custom-designed dual-polarized bowtie patch antenna capable of pumping the UWB pulses inside the patient's head is designed and presented as the biomedical sensor for the system. The antenna dimensions are 25 × 25 m m 2 . It mitigates the mismatch between the air and skin needles of any coupling liquid, resulting in safe SAR levels below 0.5 W/kg and wideband operating bandwidth that covers 1.2-4.5 GHz with unidirectional radiations. To collect the raw polarimetric data, an elliptical array of the proposed antenna is formed around the patient's head model that includes 16 elements in direct contact with the phantom. The performance of the proposed method is validated through an imaging scenario with two nonuniform bleeding areas inside the patient head model. The whole structure is simulated with a Gaussian pulse as the excitation using CST Microwave Studio tools. To produce 2D images of the voxel model, the time-domain elliptical synthetic aperture radar (ESAR) imaging algorithm is applied. Accurately detecting the presence and shape of anomalies in reconstructed images using the proposed method demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed system and determines its advantages over single-polarization systems. An arc array synthetic aperture radar (AA-SAR) is a new type of omnidirectional observation and imaging system. Based on linear array 3D imaging, this paper introduces a keystone algorithm combined with the arc array SAR 2D imaging method and proposes a modified 3D imaging algorithm based on keystone transformation. The first step is to discuss the target azimuth angle, retain the far-field approximation method of the first-order term, analyze the influence of the forward motion of the platform on the along-track position, and realize the two-dimensional focusing of the target slant range–azimuth direction. The second step is to redefine a new azimuth angle variable in the slant-range along-track imaging and use the keystone-based processing algorithm in the range frequency domain to eliminate the coupling term generated by the array angle and the slant-range time. The corrected data are used to perform along-track pulse compression to obtain the focused image of the target and realize the three-dimensional imaging of the target. Finally, in this article, the spatial resolution of the AA-SAR system in the forward-looking state is analyzed in detail, and the change in the spatial resolution of the system and the effectiveness of the algorithm are verified through simulation. The novel rotating synthetic aperture (RSA) is a new optical imaging system that uses the method of rotating the rectangular primary mirror for dynamic imaging. It has the advantage of being lightweight, with no need for splicing and real-time surface shape maintenance on orbit. The novel imaging method leads to complex image quality degradation characteristics. Therefore, it is vital to use the image quality improvement method to restore and improve the image quality to meet the application requirements. For the RSA system, a new system that has not been applied in orbit, it is difficult to construct suitable large datasets. Therefore, it is necessary to study and establish the dynamic imaging characteristic model of the RSA system, and on this basis provide data support for the corresponding image super resolution and restoration method through simulation. In this paper, we first analyze the imaging characteristics and mathematically model the rectangular rotary pupil of the RSA system. On this basis, combined with the analysis of the physical interpretation of the blur kernel, we find that the optimal blur kernel is not the point spread function (PSF) of the imaging system. Therefore, the simulation method of convolving the input image directly with the PSF is flawed. Furthermore, the weights of a convolutional neural network (CNN) are the same for each input. This means that the normal convolutional layer is not only difficult to accurately estimate the time-varying blur kernel, but also difficult to adapt to the change in the length–width ratio of the primary mirror. To that end, we propose a blur kernel estimation conditional convolutional neural network (CCNN) that is equivalent to multiple normal CNNs. We extend the CNN to a conditional model by taking an encoding as an additional input and using conditionally parameterized convolutions instead of normal convolutions. The CCNN can simulate the imaging characteristics of the rectangular pupil with different length–width ratios and different rotation angles in a controllable manner. The results of semi-physical experiments show that the proposed simulation method achieves a satisfactory performance, which can provide data and theoretical support for the image restoration and super-resolution method of the RSA system. Systems that emit electromagnetic or sonic waves for diagnostic or interventional applications often have constraints on the size of their aperture, and thus produce an elongated focus in the axial dimension. This extended depth of focus limits imaging resolution and spatial specificity of the delivered energy. Here, we have developed a method that substantially minimizes the depth of focus. The method superimposes beams of distinct frequencies in space and time to create constructive interference at target and amplify deconstructive interference everywhere else, thus sharpening the focus. The method does not require labeling of targets or other manipulations of the medium. Using simulations, we found that the method tightens the depth of focus even for systems with a narrow bandwidth. Moreover, we implemented the method in ultrasonic hardware and found that a 46.1% frequency fractional bandwidth provides an average 7.4-fold reduction in the focal volume of the resulting beams. This method can be readily applied to sharpen the focus of interventional systems and is expected to also improve the axial resolution of existing imaging systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider the influence of the navigation data on the radar-image quality in a multiposition synthetic aperture radar system. We propose algorithms for adaptive synthesis with additional focusing, which provide both refinement of the navigation data using the primary radar information and the synthesis of images with improved quality. The proposed algorithms are efficient for processing the radar information obtained as a result of both the multiposition and monostatic survey. Using an example of processing the radio holograms, which were obtained from an airborne synthetic aperture radar with inaccurate navigation information, we show the efficiency of the method of a posteriori focusing, determine its efficiency conditions, and conclude on the necessity of adaptation (a priori focusing) in the case of insufficient accuracy of the navigation data. The monitoring of ships is of paramount importance for ocean and coastal area surveillance. The synthetic aperture radar is shown to be a key sensor to provide effective and continuous observation of ships due to its unique imaging capabilities. When advanced synthetic aperture radar imaging systems are considered, the full scattering information is available that was demonstrated to be beneficial in developing improved ship detection and classification algorithms. Nonetheless, the capability of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar to observe marine vessels is significantly affected by several imaging and environmental parameters, including the incidence angle. Nonetheless, how changes in the incidence angle affect the scattering of ships still needs to be further investigated since only a sparse analysis, i.e., on different kinds of ships of different sizes observed at multiple incidence angles, has been performed. Hence, in this study, for the first time, the polarimetric scattering of the same ship, i.e., a small fishing trawler, which is imaged multiple times under the same sea state conditions but in a wide range of incidence angles, is analysed. This unique opportunity is provided by a premium L-band UAVSAR airborne dataset that consists of five full-polarimetric synthetic aperture radar scenes collected in the Gulf of Mexico. Experimental results highlight the key role played by the incidence angle on both coherent, i.e., co-polarisation signature and pedestal height, and incoherent, i.e., multi-polarisation and total backscattering power, polarimetric scattering descriptors. Experimental results show that: (1) the polarised scattering component is more sensitive to the incidence angle with respect to the unpolarised one; (2) the co-polarised channel under horizontal polarisation dominated the polarimetric backscattering from the fishing trawler at lower angles of incidence, while both co-polarised channels contribute to the polarimetric backscattering at higher incidence angles; (3) the HV polarisation provides the largest target-to-clutter ratio at lower incidence angles, while the HH polarisation should be preferred at higher angles of incidence. Waves in the Marginal Ice Zone in the Okhotsk Sea are less studied compared to the Antarctic and Arctic. In February 2020, wave observations were conducted for the first time in the Okhotsk Sea, during the observational program by Patrol Vessel Soya. A wave buoy was deployed on the ice, and in situ wave observations were made by a ship-borne stereo imaging system and Inertial Measurement Unit. Sea ice was observed visually and by aerial photographs by drone, while satellite synthetic aperture radar provided basin-wide spatial distribution. On 12 February, a swell system propagating from east northeast was detected by both the stereo imaging system and the buoy-on-ice. The wave system attenuated from 0.34 m significant wave height to 0.25 m in about 90 km, while the wave period increased from 10 s to 15–17 s. This anomalous spectral downshifting was not reproduced by numerical hindcast and by applying conventional frequency-dependent exponential attenuation to the incoming frequency spectrum. The estimated rate of spectral downshifting, defined as a ratio of momentum and energy losses, was close to that of uni-directional wave evolution accompanied by breaking dissipation: this indicates that dissipation-driven nonlinear downshifting may be at work for waves propagating in ice. Speckle or multiplicative noise is a critical issue in coherence-based imaging systems, such as synthetic aperture radar and optical coherence tomography. Existence of speckle noise considerably limits the applicability of such systems by degrading their performance. On the other hand, the sophistications that arise in the study of multiplicative noise have so far impeded theoretical analysis of such imaging systems. As a result, the current acquisition technology relies on heuristic solutions, such as oversampling the signal and converting the problem into a denoising problem with multiplicative noise. This paper attempts to bridge the gap between theory and practice by providing the first theoretical analysis of such systems. To achieve this goal the log-likelihood function corresponding to measurement systems with speckle noise is characterized. Then employing compression codes to model the source structure, for the case of under-sampled measurements, a compression-based maximum likelihood recovery method is proposed. The mean squared error (MSE) performance of the proposed method is characterized and is shown to scale as $O\left({\sqrt {\frac{k \log n }{ m}}}\right)$ , where $k$ , $m$ and $n$ denote the intrinsic dimension of the signal class according to the compression code, the number of observations, and the ambient dimension of the signal, respectively. This result, while in contrast to imaging systems with additive noise in which MSE scales as $O\left({{\frac{k \log n }{ m}}}\right)$ , suggests that if the signal class is structured (i.e., $k \ll n$), accurate recovery of a signal from under-determined measurements is still feasible, even in the presence of speckle noise. Simulation results are presented that suggest image recovery under multiplicative noise is inherently more challenging than additive noise, and that the derived theoretical results are sharp. MC-GPU is a GPU-based Monte Carlo simulator that realizes enhanced computational speeds by exploiting the parallelism of the GPU architecture. Although MC-GPU is capable in theory of modeling XRD imaging systems, existing MC-GPU configurations are limited to simulating water or water-like materials. Here, we demonstrate MC-GPU's ability to rapidly simulate arbitrary materials and model real-world experimental X-ray diffraction (XRD) imaging systems. We found a mean-squared error (MSE) < 1.50E-02 and cross-correlation (CC) > 0.99 (with a speed-up of 1075x for MC-GPU compared to GEANT4) for all comparisons in the unit-testing/cross-validation phase. Additionally, we showcased MC-GPU's ability to model realistic experimental systems by modelling a fan beam coded aperture XRD imaging system. These results demonstrate MC-GPU's utility in rapidly simulating complex, real-world XRD imaging systems, which is critical in applications ranging from medical to security imaging. Multiple-input and multiple-output synthetic aperture radar (MIMO SAR) is a very potential technique for high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) imaging due to the fact that it can provide more degrees of freedom. In this article, an innovative MIMO-HRWS SAR imaging system is introduced with segmented phase coding (SPC) waveforms. However, it is well-known that the echo separation issue is the most technical challenge for MIMO SAR. It has shown that the separation of orthogonal echoes from cross correlation interference can be achieved by scan-on-receive (SCORE). However, this method often requires large computing resources on board, especially for null-steering process. For this, we propose a two-stage spaceborne–ground echo separation scheme. This scheme is mainly divided into two steps: the first step is a real-time SCORE beamforming process on board to reduce the downlink data volume, and the second step is a bandpass–null-steering process to suppress the interfering echoes on the ground. Thus, this scheme allows for the low computing resources on board and sufficient suppression of the interference simultaneously. Following this scheme, the MIMO-HRWS SAR system enables its number of equivalent phase centers nearly double that of the azimuth multichannel SAR system, leading to higher resolution and wider swath imaging. Finally, detailed simulation experiments for the MIMO-HRWS SAR imaging system are performed to verify the practicability and feasibility of the proposed scheme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microwave photonic synthetic aperture radar (MWP-SAR) offers a larger signal bandwidth than conventional SAR, and its theoretical resolution can be improved to centimeter level. To achieve same order of magnitude resolution in the azimuth direction, long synthetic aperture is always required, which results in extremely high requirements for the accuracy of imaging procedure. Compared with the conventional SAR imaging algorithms, two major problems should be considered: 1) the scattering characteristics of target might vary from the frequency of signal and the angle of incidence, which seriously affects the coherence of received echo and 2) the imaging of the MWP-SAR system is more sensitive to motion errors and therefore requires higher accuracy of motion compensation processing. To solve the above issues, a high-precision imaging method for MWP-SAR is proposed. First, based on the attribute scattering center (ASC) model, this article analyzes the target scattering characteristics with different frequencies and incident angles. Then, according to the influence of scattering phase on MWP-SAR imaging, an optimal subaperture division algorithm is proposed to guarantee the coherence of each subaperture data and better imaging results. Furthermore, to compensate for the effects of high-order motion errors, this article proposes a motion error estimation algorithm based on subimage registration, where the full-aperture high-order motion errors can be divided into multiple linear components, and the flight trajectory of platform can be accurately reconstructed. Finally, a full-aperture time-domain high-precision imaging method is presented, and the effectiveness of the proposed formation is verified by both simulation and actual airborne MWP-SAR data processing. The 3-D ultrasound (US) imaging addresses the limitation in field-of-view (FOV) in conventional 2-D US imaging by providing 3-D viewing of the anatomy. The 3-D US imaging has been extensively adapted for diagnosis and image-guided surgical intervention. However, conventional approaches to implement 3-D US imaging require either expensive and sophisticated 2-D array transducers or external actuation mechanisms to move a 1-D array mechanically. Here, we propose a 3-D US imaging mechanism using an actuated acoustic reflector instead of the sensor elements for volume acquisition with significantly extended 3-D FOV, which can be implemented with simple hardware and compact size. To improve image quality on the elevation plane, we implemented the synthetic aperture focusing (SAF) method according to the diagonal geometry of the virtual element array in the proposed imaging mechanism for elevation beamforming. We first evaluated the proposed imaging mechanism and SAF with simulated point targets and cyst targets. The results of point targets suggested improved image quality on the elevation plane, and the results of cysts targets demonstrated a potential to improve 3-D visualization of human anatomy. We built a prototype imaging system with a 3-D FOV of 38 mm (lateral) by 38 mm (elevation) by 50 mm (axial) and collected data in imaging experiments with phantoms. Experimental data showed consistency with simulation results. The SAF method enhanced quantifying the cyst volume size in the breast mimicking phantom compared with no elevation beamforming. Near-field high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging is mostly accompanied by a large number of data acquisition processes, which increases the system complexity and device cost. According to extensive reports, reducing the number of sampling points of a radar in space can greatly reduce the amount of data. However, when spatial sparse sampling is carried out, a ghost normally appears in the imaging results due to the high side lobes generated in the azimuth. To address this issue, a technique is introduced in this paper to recover the blank data through amplitude and phase compensation based on the correlation between sparse array sampling through adjacent points. Firstly, the data sampled by the sparse array is compressed in the range direction to obtain the expected data slices in the same range direction. Then, the blank element of the slice is compensated for with amplitude and phase to obtain full aperture data. Finally, the matched filter method is used to aid in the image reconstruction. The simulation results verified that the method proposed in this paper can effectively reconstruct the image under two kinds of sparse sampling conditions. Thus, a simple single-input single-output (SISO) synthetic aperture radar imaging test bench is established. Compared with the results of a 1 mm (1/4 λ) sampling interval, the quality of the reconstructed image under the condition of a 4 mm (1 λ) sampling interval still stands using our proposed method. Demonstrated by the experiment, the normalized root-mean-square error(NMSE) is 5.75%. Additionally, when the spatial sampling points are sampled randomly with 30% of the full sampling condition, this method can also restore and reconstruct the image with high quality. Due to the decrease of sampling points, the data volume can be reduced, which is beneficial for improving the scanning speed and alleviating the pressure of data transmission for near-field high resolution SAR imaging systems. The novel rotating synthetic aperture imaging system has the advantages of short processing cycle, light weight, low cost, and convenient transport, which is a potential development direction for future optical satellite payloads with ultra-large aperture. However, influenced by the coupling effects of the rectangular primary mirror, rotating imaging, and link perturbation, images from this system may have unique spatial and temporal variability with resolution anisotropy, resulting in the dynamics and weak features of targets. The insufficient recognition of system characteristics seriously restricts the application ability of corresponding target interpretation methods. To address this problem, we start with the analysis of system imaging characteristics and target interpretation mechanisms. Considering calculating texture, grayscale, and edge feature parameters in evaluation regions of different sizes, we propose a degradation assessment method based on multi-scale feature characterization. Then, combined with the theoretical calculation and practical target detection experiments, the influence of crucial parameters such as the aspect ratio and rotation angle of the primary mirror on the target interpretation capability is analyzed. This article proposes a new synthetic aperture radar (SAR), named as panoramic SAR, based on a combination of linear and rotational SARs, by which a large 360° panoramic view of the observed scene can be reconstructed. First, the system geometry and its imaging process based on the back-projection algorithm (BPA) are presented. The combined movement constitutes a 2-D synthetic aperture, and thus higher imaging resolutions can be obtained. The corresponding resolution analysis and the sampling criteria are discussed accordingly. Then, a novel dynamic piecewise compensation (DPC) algorithm, a recursive imaging process, is proposed to reduce the processing complexity significantly. The imaging implementation and the complexity are also studied respectively. Finally, a prototype of panoramic SAR is built based on an frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar and a moving platform, and the simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the proposed panoramic SAR principle and the DPC algorithm. High-frequency endoscopic ultrasound (HFEUS) imaging is an important tool commonly used in clinical practice for imaging hollow organs. The virtual source synthetic aperture (VSSA) method is effective in improving the imaging quality of HFEUS. However, interference from the motor control unit severely affects the accuracy of the conventional delay and sum (DAS) method, thus compromising the effectiveness of VSSA. In this article, a new computational method based on phase correction was proposed to overcome these shortcomings, which is named phase-corrected-and-sum (PCAS). Meanwhile, the parameters of coherence factor weighting (CFW) can be obtained from the correlation coefficient of the superimposed signals to further increase the imaging quality. Three kinds of imaging experiments were designed to evaluate the proposed method. Compared with the conventional method, the results show that the PCAS-CFW method improves the lateral resolution by about 10% and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) by about 44%. Therefore, this proposed method is capable of significantly improving HFEUS image quality, and this method can be easily integrated into current HFEUS imaging systems, showing great potential for clinical applications. Rotating Synthetic Aperture (RSA) technology is one of the distinctly advantageous Earth geostationary orbit optical remote sensing technologies. However, the continuous rotation of the RSA system's rectangular primary mirror results in a discernible drop in resolution along the shorter side of the mirror. Additionally, the captured images exhibit periodic and time-varying characteristics. To improve the image quality to meet interpretation needs, we first delineate the imaging process of the rotating primary mirror and analyze the characteristics of image degradation based on the system's imaging mechanism. Then, we propose a dual super-resolution (SR) framework based on Swin Transformer and introduce a self-supervised learning method for jointly training the unified SR network using wavelet fusion. The self-supervised learning method effectively utilizes the spatiotemporal correlation of the information contained in images captured at different rotation directions of the rectangular pupil. Moreover, the attention mechanism in Transformer can adopt a global perspective and utilize content-based interactions between image content and attention weights to model strong long-range dependencies in remote sensing images. This approach significantly enhances image quality along the pupil's shorter side, consequently yielding superior results. Extensive digital and semi-physical imaging experiments, involving six aspect ratios of the primary mirror, demonstrate that our SR method surpasses state-of-the-art methods. Rotating synthetic aperture (RSA) technology offers a promising solution for achieving large-aperture and lightweight designs in optical remote-sensing systems. It employs a rectangular primary mirror, resulting in noncircular spatial symmetry in the point-spread function, which changes over time as the mirror rotates. Consequently, it is crucial to employ an appropriate image-fusion method to merge high-resolution information intermittently captured from different directions in the image sequence owing to the rotation of the mirror. However, existing image-fusion methods have struggled to address the unique imaging mechanism of this system and the characteristics of the geostationary orbit in which the system operates. To address this challenge, we model the imaging process of a noncircular rotating pupil and analyse its on-orbit imaging characteristics. Based on this analysis, we propose an image-fusion network based on a vision transformer. This network incorporates inter-frame mutual attention and intra-frame self-attention mechanisms, facilitating more effective extraction of temporal and spatial information from the image sequence. Specifically, mutual attention was used to model the correlation between pixels that were close to each other in the spatial and temporal dimensions, whereas long-range spatial dependencies were captured using intra-frame self-attention in the rotated variable-size attention block. We subsequently enhanced the fusion of spatiotemporal information using video swin transformer blocks. Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is a valuable label-free modality that has gained significant interest due to its wide potentials, from basic biology to clinical applications. Most existing QPI systems measure microscopic objects via interferometry or nonlinear iterative phase reconstructions from intensity measurements. However, all imaging systems compromise spatial resolution for the field of view and vice versa, i.e., suffer from a limited space bandwidth product. Current solutions to this problem involve computational phase retrieval algorithms, which are time-consuming and often suffer from convergence problems. In this article, we presented synthetic aperture interference light (SAIL) microscopy as a solution for high-resolution, wide field of view QPI. The proposed approach employs low-coherence interferometry to directly measure the optical phase delay under different illumination angles and produces large space-bandwidth product label-free imaging. We validate the performance of SAIL on standard samples and illustrate the biomedical applications on various specimens: pathology slides, entire insects, and dynamic live cells in large cultures. The reconstructed images have a synthetic numeric aperture of 0.45 and a field of view of 2.6 × 2.6 mm2. A novel super-resolution volumetric photoacoustic microscopy, based on the theory of structured-illumination, is proposed in this paper. The structured-illumination will be introduced in order to surpass the diffraction limit in a photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) structure. Through optical excitation of the targeted object with a sinusoidal spatial fringe pattern, the object’s frequency spectrum is forced to shift in the spatial frequency domain. The shifting in the desired direction leads to the passage of the high-frequency contents of the object through the passband of the acoustic diffraction frequency response. Finally, combining the low-frequency image with the high-frequency parts in four regular orientations in the spatial frequency domain is equivalent to imaging the targeted object with an imaging system of two-fold bandwidth and thus half lateral resolution. In order to obtain the image of out-of-focus regions and improve the lateral resolution outside the focal region of a PAM imaging system, Fourier-domain reconstruction algorithm based on the synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) using the virtual detector concept is utilized for reduction in the required computational load and time. The performance of the proposed imaging system is validated with in vivo and ex vivo targets. The experimental results obtained from several tungsten filaments in the depth range of 1.2 mm, show an improvement of −6 dB lateral resolution from 55–287 μm to 25–29 μm and also an improvement of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) from 16–22 dB to 27–33 dB in the proposed system. Low-cost ultrasound imaging systems are desired for many applications outside of radiology and cardiology departments. By making ultrasound systems smaller and lower cost, the use of ultrasound has spread from these mainstays to other areas of the hospital such as emergency departments and critical care. To further miniaturize and reduce the cost of ultrasound systems, we have investigated novel Fresnel-based beamforming methods to reduce front-end hardware requirements. Previous studies with linear and curvilinear arrays demonstrated comparable imaging performance using Fresnel-based beamforming versus delay-and-sum (DAS) beamforming. In this work, we extend Fresnel-based beamforming to phased arrays with beam steering. To accomplish this in transmit mode, we introduce a technique called a gated transmit beamformer where multicycle bursts are gated using multiplexers. In receive mode, a 64-element 2.5-MHz phased array is broken up into four 16-element subapertures, and each subaperture performs Fresnel beamforming before a final beamforming step is done. Timing errors are inevitable with Fresnel-based beamforming leading to higher sidelobe and clutter levels. To suppress sidelobe and clutter contributions, we also combine this with our previous technique, dual apodization with cross correlation (DAX) to improve contrast. Field II simulations are performed to evaluate spatial resolution and contrast-to-noise ratio and compared to standard DAS beamforming. Fresnel-based and gated transmit beamforming is also implemented using synthetic aperture data from tissue-mimicking phantoms. In order to improve the image quality of a coded-aperture-based gamma-ray imaging apparatus, a method for removing Compton scattered and other multipixel events is presented that removes inaccurate position estimations from the data stream. In coded-aperture gamma-ray imaging detectors, scattering events that are shared between different partitions in the active medium can result in the inaccurate determination of the initial gamma-ray interaction position, the result of which is distortion in the angular reconstruction mapping. For coded-aperture system in which the rapid localization and identification of the emitting source is important, the distortion due to scattered radiation can increase the integration time of the system. We show, in both software and hardware implementations using a cerium-doped gadolinium aluminum gallium garnet pixelated scintillator array, that filtering the data to remove multipixel events can improve the image quality despite the efficiency loss associated with not utilizing all of the interactions within the detector. A 3-D synthetic transmit aperture ultrasound imaging system with a fully addressed array usually leads to high hardware complexity and cost since each element in the array is individually controlled. To reduce the hardware complexity, we had presented the large-pitch synthetic transmit aperture (LPSTA) ultrasound imaging for 2-D imaging using a 1-D phased array to reduce the number of measurement channels M (the product of number of transmissions, IT, and the number of receiving channels in each transmission, IR). In this article, we extend this method to a 2-D matrix array for 3-D imaging. We present both numerical simulations and experimental measurements. We combined L × L adjacent elements into transmission subapertures (SAP) and K × K adjacent elements into receive SAPs in synthetic transmit aperture (STA) imaging. In the image reconstruction, we conducted the first attempt to apply and integrate Gaussian-approximated spatial response function (G-SRF) with delay and sum (DAS) to improve the image contrast, especially for the near-field targets. The imaging performance obtained from G-SRF was also evaluated numerically and compared with the previously presented frequency-domain SRF (Freq-domain SRF). The 3-D large-pitch synthetic transmit aperture (3-D-LPSTA) with G-SRF can provide a computationally efficient solution compared with the standard 3-D-STA method. With approximately 1900-fold reduction in the number of measurement channels, 3-D-LPSTA can provide image contrast comparable with the standard 3-D-STA with a full array and significantly better than using a periodically sparse array with similar complexity. In addition to reducing the system complexity, the 3-D-LPSTA achieves 700-fold reduction in computational complexity and 523-fold reduction in data storage. Finally, we evaluated and implemented the G-SRF using phantom data, which were consistent with the simulation results showing that the G-SRF can improve the image contrast. The results demonstrate that the proposed 3-D-LPSTA shows the great potential for designing an inexpensive ultrasound system to ensure the real-time 3-D clinical ultrasound imaging using large arrays. This communication presents a freehand imaging system, which takes full advantage of a compact multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar to provide the real-time results by means of freehand movements. The system is based on a commercial radar-on-chip, equipped with four receivers and two transmitters, and an optical tracking system (i.e., motion capture system) for retrieving its position and attitude. The reduced size of the radar enables its handheld operation, making possible to create a synthetic aperture by moving the scanner over the area of interest. Due to the new degrees of freedom with respect to previous implementations based on quasi-monostatic topologies, a novel calibration strategy for the system is required in order to mitigate positioning errors. After calibration, the simulations and measurements are accomplished revealing that the novel freehand multistatic setup significantly outperforms the monostatic setup in terms of scanning speed and image quality. Optical sparse aperture imaging technology has promising applications in the next generation of high-resolution imaging systems, but the phasing errors correction of sparse aperture is an urgent problem to be addressed. In this paper, we propose a blind structured-illumination super-resolution imaging system using a sparse aperture as the transmitter to overcome phasing errors and obtain higher resolution. In our scheme, an unknown pattern is projected onto the object by a sparse aperture system. By translating the unknown pattern, a sequence of modulated raw images is obtained. Based on these low-resolution raw images, the super-resolution object and the unknown illumination pattern are jointly estimated by the Adam algorithm. Here we show, both in the simulation and experiment, the resolution of reconstructions using sparse aperture as transmitter are similar to those using monolithic lens. Furthermore, we validate that the proposed method can protect the reconstruction effect from piston error and widen the tolerance range of tip/tilt error (peak-valley values) up to 0.5λ. At the same time, our proposed system can also alleviate to some extent the problem of mid-frequency modulation transfer function (MTF) attenuation that exists in sparse aperture imaging. This paper discusses a modular implementation of synthetic aperture interferometry (SAI) using inexpensive telecommunications technologies that can be expanded for use in optical instruments with arbitrarily large fields of view. Exploiting multiple image sensors and multiple illumination sources, transmission and reflection SAI geometries, capable of emulating the phase contrast and interference modes of conventional interference microscopes, are considered. The point-spread and transfer characteristics of these geometries are illustrated for the case of a transmission mode instrument. It is shown that although imaging is strictly field dependent (i.e. shift-variant), the response of modular instruments is periodic and with careful choice of illumination and sensor positioning can be made quasi shift-invariant. We demonstrate SAI in a transmission configuration comprising of a single coherent imager that holographically records the field scattered from a test target sequentially illuminated by 16 different plane waves. This set-up is equivalent to a single module of a larger SAI system and since brightfield regions in the individual reconstructed images overlap, provides an ideal platform to examine the effect of tilt and phase offset errors in the illumination. Recently, remote sensing platforms such as drones, helicopters, and satellites have been increasingly used for accident monitoring. Images obtained by drones or helicopters have high resolution but small coverage because the platforms fly at a low altitude. In comparison, the images acquired from satellites, which operate in high orbits, have wide coverage and are thus more effective in monitoring vast maritime areas. However, because satellites capture images at a predetermined time according to the mission orbit, the observation period is limited. Therefore, a satellite imagery collection system based on satellites operating worldwide must be established to acquire images from the target time and place. This paper proposes an image collection system for acquiring satellite images of target areas in maritime accident scenarios. Based on a statistical analysis of historical maritime accident data, the main objects to be detected are selected, and the requirements are specified. Additionally, the spatial and revisit cycles and observation time of optical and synthetic aperture radar satellites are analyzed and an image collection system is established by selecting the satellites available for accident response. A fast synthetic aperture (SA) focusing algorithm is proposed in this article to overcome the problem of huge computational complexity in developing high-performance SA ultrasound imaging systems. The proposed method realizes the fast focusing of SA imaging by utilizing a virtual array (VA) technique in combination with nonuniform fast Fourier transform (VA-NUFFT) method. The computational performance of the VA-NUFFT algorithm is evaluated with the computational complexity under acceptable beam errors, compared with the conventional delay-and-sum (DAS) method and the frequency-domain direct method (DM), as well as a multiple NUFFT (M-NUFFT) method. Simulation results reveal that under a beam error level less than −57.4 dB, 25 and 10 reduction ratios of entire real operations can be achieved by the VA-NUFFT at larger SA scan lines of 2048, when compared with the DAS and DM, respectively. In the key SA focusing step, i.e., the “spatial process” step, the computational load of VA-NUFFT is lower than two orders of magnitude of that of the DM. SA imaging of a phantom with four cysts is also simulated and a contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) criterion is adopted for evaluation of imaging quality. The curved trajectory and long synthetic aperture time of medium-Earth-orbit (MEO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) lead to a 2-D spatial variation in the signals. Traditional methods treat the range and azimuth variations separately and usually suffer from high computational complexities. In this article, we investigate the Doppler rate distribution across a large scene and exploit an optimal imaging coordinate system, in which the MEO SAR signals satisfy the azimuth-shift-invariant property. Thus, the additional processing of the azimuth spatial variation in MEO SAR imaging algorithms can be avoided, and the efficiency of the image formation processor can be obviously improved. The Doppler linearization is used to address the higher-order Doppler parameters to achieve more precise focusing, and at the same time, addresses the azimuth time shift caused by the changes of signal distribution. A W-band multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar imaging system has been proposed. The $4 \times 4$ radar system that forms a 2-D virtual array operates at a center frequency of 94 GHz and bandwidth of 1 GHz with frequency-modulated continuous wave. A hybrid scheme comprising time- and frequency-division multiplexing is introduced for establishing orthogonal waveforms, where the transmit channels perform alternate transmission in pairs. The proposed scheme can efficiently extend the number of MIMO channels utilizing the existing hardware with simultaneous transmission. The design, implementation, measurements, and imaging results of the proposed radar system have been presented. The imaging performance was tested through outdoor experiments. The high-resolution performance was shown with images generated using a synthetic aperture radar. The impulse responses of all channels were measured, and the resolution was confirmed to be 0.15 m in all the channels. In addition, a human and a car at 100-m range were imaged using the proposed radar system. The polarimetric and interferometric capabilities were tested for multimode imaging with the MIMO configuration. Synthetic aperture imaging systems can be applied to equivalently get high-resolution images of traditional monolithic primary mirror systems with less weight and costs. Spatial modulation diversity (SMD), a newly developed post-processing technology applicable for such synthetic aperture systems, is very sensitive to Gaussian noise, which greatly limits its further application. In this paper, we propose an improved SMD strategy by introducing the deep denoising convolutional neural networks (DnCNN) into the image preprocessing to improve the robustness of SMD. Results of the numerical simulations demonstrate that the strategy proposed exhibits superior performance compared to the traditional SMD technique in terms of both the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of phase estimates and the structural similarity (SSIM) of image reconstruction. The architecture and implementation of a system for synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) reconstruction on ultrasonic data acquired using a hand-held device is described. The reconstruction and the measurement process are performed simultaneously, with the goal of providing instantaneous highly focused visual feedback to the engineer. The implementation is based on the 3D smartInspect system that is currently being developed at Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP. This system assists engineers by recording, displaying and protocolling manually acquired data. In this paper, it is shown that it is possible to enhance this system by adding simultaneous SAFT processing on top of the existing functionality. This improves the imaging quality of the system. Multistatic millimeter-wave imaging structures are superior to their monostatic counterparts for imaging natural objects of sudden profile variations. Multistatic image reconstruction is conventionally performed via synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-based methods which, in spite of their high accuracy, are computationally burdensome. On the other side, the Fourier-based image reconstruction in multistatic systems also faces few challenges including multidimensional interpolation, a plane-wave approximation of spherical waves, and $k$ -space partitioning. This paper presents a fast implementation of the SAR-based image reconstruction method in case of 1-D and 2-D multistatic arrays. The proposed implementation is Fourier based across the uniform direction in $k$ -space and SAR based along the nonuniform direction. Both methods are fully parallelizable and are arranged into a vector format to maximize memory usage and minimize the computational time. The extensive validation and benchmarking have been performed with both simulation and experimental data, which proves a $256\times $ improvement in the reconstruction time for the worst case scenario compared to that of in SAR-based methods with the same image quality. Furthermore, the reconstructed image performance is around $10\times $ better than the most recent Fourier-based reconstruction method, in terms of root-mean-square error metric, and with $28\times $ less computational time. Vibration greatly impairs the imaging quality of airborne synthetic aperture ladar (SAL), so the vibration phase error must be estimated and compensated before imaging. Limited by the laser's average power, the high pulse repetition frequency of the SAL will result in lower peak-power of the laser, thereby reducing the echo signal's single-pulse signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In the case of a low SNR, the coherence between channels worsens, and the vibration phase-error compensation method based on interferometry is difficult to apply. We analyze the imaging SNR and resolution of the echo signal when the airborne SAL observes noncooperative targets by intentionally broadening the transmitting and receiving beams, discussing the imaging processing flow of the low SNR signal under conditions of beam-broaden and platform vibration. The data processing flow includes the phase correction of the echo signal using the transmitting reference channel signal. Based on the flight parameters of the airborne SAL, the echo was dechirped and narrow-band filtered to reduce noise. After subaperture division, the spatial correlation algorithm was used to estimate and compensate the vibration phase error, and the range-Doppler algorithm was used to achieve strip imaging. At the same time, the phase gradient autofocus algorithm was introduced to improve the focusing effect. The processing results of flight experiment data of the airborne SAL corresponding to noncooperative targets at 1 km demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a sparse aperture imaging system, the piston error affects the co-phase of subapertures and reduces the imaging resolution. Based on the image quality evaluation function, the piston error correction can be converted into a class of optimization problems. In this paper, a metaheuristic algorithm is used to implement global search based on stochastic parallel gradient descent algorithm. A hybrid algorithm is obtained by combining the stochastic parallel gradient descent algorithm with the Gray Wolf algorithm. The hybrid algorithm is developed at the best three positions of the population (the head wolf) using the gradient direction of the SPGD algorithm, and the other populations keep moving toward the best three head wolves. This hybrid algorithm balances exploration and exploitation better in the piston error correction of sparse aperture systems. The hybrid algorithm has a good optimization speed while satisfying the correction accuracy. In the next generation of ultrasound imaging systems, Capacitive micromachined ultasonic transducer (CMUT) based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) is a promising research direction of transducers, which has wide application prospects. In this paper, based on the study of three imaging methods, including classical phased array (CPA) imaging, classical synthetic aperture (CSA) imaging and phased subarray (PSA) imaging, several different imaging schemes are designed for linear CMUT array, after that the performances of these imaging schemes are compared and analyzed. The effects of the three imaging methods are verified and analyzed based on the linear CMUT array. Through analysis, it is found that the image quality of the classical phased array imaging method is the best, the imaging quality of the above three imaging methods can be effectively improved by adopting the amplitude apodization and dynamic focusing method. The research results in this paper will provide theoretical basis and application reference for the design of ultrasonic imaging system based on linear CMUT array in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
