The propensity of uranyl for hydrolysis in aqueous environments prevents precise control of uranyl species in the scenarios of on-demand separation and tailored synthesis. Herein, using cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) as the macrocyclic molecule and 4,4'-bipyridine-N,N'-dioxide (DPO) as the string molecule, we propose a new kind of multidentate pseudorotaxane ligand, DPO@CB[7] for capturing uranyl species at different pH's. With the aprotic nature of DPO for metal coordination, the coordination ability of the DPO@CB[7] ligand is less affected by pH and can work in a wide range of pH's. Furthermore, by adaptive uranyl coordination, this aprotic pseudorotaxane ligand achieves effective recognition for different uranyl species ranging from monomeric to tetrameric originating from hydrolysis at varying pH's, and four novel uranyl-rotaxane compounds (URC1-4) are successfully obtained. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the DPO@CB[7] ligand coordinates with uranyl centers from monomeric to tetrameric in four different modes, as a result of structural flexibility of the DPO@CB[7] pseudorotaxane ligand. A detailed discussion for conformation flexibility of the DPO@CB[7] ligand has been conducted on the position changes of the DPO ligand trapped in the CB[7], which thus reveals good adaptivity of DPO@CB[7] that is noncovalently bonded as a supramolecular motif. In addition, characterization of the physicochemical properties of URC1 and URC2 with high phase purity, including powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and luminescence properties, are also provided. This work provides a good case of an adaptive pseudorotaxane ligand for the recognition and capture of different uranyl species and will bring valuable hints to the design of multifunctional supramolecular ligands for actinide separation in the future.

Although 1,10-phenanthroline-based ligands have recently shown vast opportunities for the separation of trivalent actinides (Ans(III)) from lanthanides (Lns(III)), the optimization and design of the extractant structure based on the phenanthroline framework remain hotspots for further improving the separation. Following the strategy of hard and soft donor atom combination, for the first time, the quinoline group was attached to the 1,10-phenanthroline skeleton, giving a lipophilic ligand, 2,9-diacyl-bis((3,4-dihydroquinoline-1((2H)-yl)-1),10-phenanthroline (QL-DAPhen)), for Am(III)/Eu(III) separation. In the presence of sodium nitrate, the ligand can effectively extract Am(III) over Eu(III) in HNO3 solution, with the separation factor (SFAm/Eu) ranging from 29 to 44. The coordination chemistry of Eu(III) with QL-DAPhen was investigated by slope analysis, NMR titration, UV-vis titration, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, and theoretical calculations. The experimental results unanimously confirm that the ligand forms both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with Eu(III), and the stability constants (log β) of each of the two complexes were obtained. Density functional theory calculations show that the Am-N bonds have more covalent characteristics than the Eu-N bonds in the complexes, which reveals the reason why the ligand preferentially bonds with Am(III). Meanwhile, the thermodynamic analysis reveals that the 1:1 complex is more thermodynamically stable than the 1:2 complex. The findings of this work have laid a solid theoretical foundation for the application of phenanthroline-based ligands in the separation of An(III) from practical systems.

The interlayer regulation of layered environmental adsorption materials such as two-dimensional early transition metal carbides and carbonitrides (MXenes) plays an important role in their purification performance for specific pollutants. Here the enhanced uptake of ThIV by multilayered titanium carbides (Ti3C2Tx) through a hydrated intercalation strategy is reported. ThIV adsorption behaviors of three Ti3C2Tx samples with different c lattice parameters were studied as a function of contact time, pH, initial concentration, temperature and ion strength in batch experiments. The results indicated that the ThIV uptake was pH and ionic strength dependent, and the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the heterogeneous isotherm (Freundlich) model. Thermodynamic data suggested that the adsorption process of all MXene samples was a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The dimethyl sulfoxide intercalated hydrated Ti3C2Tx featured the largest interlayer space and exhibited the highest ThIV adsorption capacity (162 mg g−1 at pH 3.4 or 112 mg g−1 at pH 3.0), reflecting the significant increase in available adsorption sites from Ti3C2Tx interlayers. The adsorption mechanism has been clarified based on adsorption experiments and spectroscopic characterizations. An ion exchange process was proposed for the interaction between hydrated MXenes and ThIV, where H+ from surface [Ti−O]−H+ groups were the primary active sites on Ti3C2Tx. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) fitting results, in combination with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses, clearly indicated that ThIV mainly formed the outer-sphere complexes on Ti3C2Tx surface through electrostatic interaction under strong acid conditions, while at pH > 3.0 the adsorption mechanism was determined by inner-sphere coordination and electrostatic interaction together.

In this work, we focused on the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) with four hydrophilic sulfonated ligands (L) based on the framework of phenanthroline and bipyridine through scalar relativistic density functional theory. We studied the electronic structures of [ML(NO3)3] (M = Am, Eu) complexes and the bonding nature between metal and ligands as well as evaluated the separation selectivity of Am(III)/Eu(III). The tetrasulfonated ligand L2 with a bipyridine framework has the strongest complexing ability for metal ions probably because of the better solubility and flexible skeleton. The disulfonated ligand L1 has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity, which is attributed to the covalent difference between the Am-N and Eu-N bonds based on the quantum theory of atoms in the molecule analysis. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the four hydrophilic sulfonated ligands are more selective toward Am(III) over Eu(III). In addition, these hydrophilic sulfonated ligands show better complexing ability and Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity compared to the corresponding hydrophobic nonsulfonated ones. This work provides theoretical support for the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) using hydrophilic sulfonated ligands.

Herein we present a new metalloligand, Th6L12 [IHEP-10; L = 4-pyrazolecarboxylic acid (H2PyC)], which can be used to generate a novel multicomponent heterometallic metal-organic framework (MOF), [[Cu3(μ3-OH)(NO3)(H2O)2]2Th6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4(PyC)6(HPyC)6(H2O)6](NO3)2 (IHEP-11), through further assembly with second [Cu3(μ3-OH)(PyC)3] clusters. In IHEP-11, six Cu3 clusters are connected by six NO3- anions to form an unprecedented annular Cu18 cluster, which can be viewed as a 12-connected node to link with 12 Th6 clusters, resulting a 4,12-connected shp net. Benefiting from the cationic framework and 3D porous structure, IHEP-11 can efficiently remove ReO4- (an analogue of radioactive 99TcO4-) from aqueous solution in a wide pH range. This work highlights the feasibility of constructing multicomponent MOFs through a step-by-step synthesis strategy based on metalloligands.

Separation of trivalent actinide (An(III)) and lanthanide (Ln(III)) is a worldwide challenge of nuclear waste treatment. Designing ligands with efficient An(III)/Ln(III) separation performance is still one of the key issues for the disposal of accumulated radioactive waste and the recovery of minor actinides. Recently, N-heterocyclic ligands modified with amide groups have shown excellent An(III)/Ln(III) separation performance. The preorganized structure of the ligands has a great impact on the An(III)/Ln(III) separation performance. We theoretically investigated the extraction behaviors of Am(III) and Eu(III) using phenanthroline (L1 and L2) and bipyridine (L3 and L4) based ligands with a completely or partially preorganized structure. The properties of these ligands and their coordination structures, bonding nature and thermodynamic behaviors with the Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes have been systematically studied in a theoretical fashion. The analyses of the bonding nature suggest that the Am-N bonds possess more covalence than the Eu-N bonds. The thermodynamic results indicate that L2 with a completely preorganized structure has the strongest extraction ability and the best Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity, while L3 with the most flexible skeleton appears to have the weakest extraction ability and the lowest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. And L1 and L4 have similar performances with regard to Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. The results suggest that a certain degree of preorganization of the ligand structure can enhance the extraction ability and Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. This work provides valuable information for designing efficient ligands for An(III)/Ln(III) separation by the preorganization strategy.

Monitoring and quantification of the photoresponsive behavior of metal-organic frameworks that respond to a light stimulus are crucial to establish a clear structure-activity relationship related to light regulation. Herein, we report the first azobenzene-modified photoresponsive thorium-organic framework (Th-Azo-MOF) with the formula [Th6O4(OH)4(H2O)6L6] (H2L = (E)-2'-p-tolyldiazenyl-1,1':4',4'-terphenyl-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid), in which the utilization of a thorium cluster as a metal node leads to one of the largest pore sizes among all the azobenzene-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The phototriggered transformation of the trans isomer to the cis isomer is monitored and characterized quantitatively by comprehensive analyses of NMR and UV spectroscopy, which reveals that the maximum isomerization ratio of cisTh-Azo-MOF in the solid state is 19.7% after irradiation for 120 min, and this isomerization is reversible and can be repeated several times without apparent performance changes. Moreover, the isomerization-related difference in the adsorption of the Rhodamine B guest is also illustrated and a possible photoregulated mechanism is proposed. This work will shed light on new explorations for constructing functionalized actinide porous materials by the elegant combination of actinide nodes with tailored organic ligands and furthermore will provide a comprehensive understanding of photoisomerization processes in MOF solids and insight into the mechanism on photoregulated cargo adsorption and release by photoactive MOFs.

The fractionation of high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants simplifies the handling of its components, and facilitates the reduction of radiotoxic effects on the environment. The search and study of new ligands for solvent extraction, as one of the methods in fractionation, remains a complex and important research task. In this work, four pyridine diphosphonate ligands were synthesized. These ligands are part of the class of the N,O-donor extractants, which are selective towards Am(III). The separation factor SF(Am/Eu) for the best extractant reached values up to 10. The influence of the substituents on the efficiency of extraction and complexation of trivalent f-elements, the kinetics of extraction, and the behavior of the ligand at the interface were described. The effect of nitric acid concentration on the extraction was shown. The stoichiometry of the complexes was determined by slope analysis in solvent extraction experiment and verified by spectrophotometric titration in acetonitrile. Liquid tension experiments with a pendant drop method revealed the interfacial properties of the ligands in "F-3 solvent/H

U(VI) and Eu(III), as representative elements of the hexavalent actinide and trivalent lanthanides (always as a chemical analogue for trivalent actinide), respectively, have attracted more and more attentions due to the widespread use of nuclear energy. Much effort has been focused on developing versatile materials for their uptake from aqueous solution. For the first time, we report here UiO-66 and its mono- (UiO-66-COOH) and di-carboxyl (UiO-66-2COOH) functional derivatives as robust adsorbents for efficient U(VI) and Eu(III) removal. It is found that the introduction of carboxyl groups greatly reduces the surface charge of UiO-66, thus guaranteeing excellent adsorption capacity at low pH. At pH = 3, for example, the adsorption capacity of UiO-66-2COOH for U(VI) and Eu(III) is more than 100 and 60 mg/g, respectively, while almost no adsorption occurs for pristine UiO-66. At pH = 4, both UiO-66-COOH and UiO-66-2COOH show high performance on U(VI) and Eu(III) removal. UiO-66-COOH has adsorption capacities of 80 and 43 mg/g for U(VI) and Eu(III), respectively, while the values for UiO-66-2COOH reach 150 and 80 mg/g, respectively. Also, all these materials achieve adsorption equilibrium within 100 min. More importantly, combining the needs of practical applications and the characteristics of high stability, high porosity, and excellent adsorption performance of UiO-66-2COOH, dynamic adsorption column experiments were successfully conducted; ∼99% U(VI)/Eu(III) can be efficiently adsorbed, and >90% adsorbed U(VI)/Eu(III) can be re-collected with dilute nitric acid solution, even after four adsorption-desorption cycles. The findings of this work demonstrate the application potential of metal-organic framework materials to remove radionuclides from environmental samples or nuclear waste liquids.

Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the major form of pancreatic cancer with the worst outcomes. Early detection is key to improving the overall survival rate of PDAC patients. Recent studies have demonstrated that microRNA (miRNA) signatures in plasma small extracellular vesicles (EVs) are potential biomarkers for the early detection of PDAC. However, published results are inconsistent due to the heterogeneity of plasma small EVs and the methods used for small EV isolation. We have recently refined the process of plasma small EV isolation using double filtration and ultracentrifugation. In the present study, we applied this protocol and analyzed plasma small EV miRNA signatures by small RNA sequencing and quantitative RT-PCR in a pilot cohort, consisting of patients with early-stage PDAC, and age- and gender-matched healthy subjects (n = 20). We found, via small RNA sequencing, that there are several miRNAs enriched in plasma small EVs of PDAC patients, and the levels of miR-18a and miR-106a were confirmed by quantitative RT-PCR to be significantly elevated in patients with early-stage PDAC compared with age- and gender-matched healthy subjects. Furthermore, using an immunoaffinity-based plasma small EV isolation approach, we confirmed that the levels of miR-18a and miR-106a in plasma small EVs were significantly higher in PDAC patients versus the healthy subjects. We thus conclude that the levels of miR-18a and miR-106a in plasma small EVs are promising biomarkers for the early detection of PDAC.

Mutual separation of trivalent americium (Am3+) and curium (Cm3+) ions through liquid–liquid extraction is challenging due to the similarity in their chemical properties. Three N, O combined extractants 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid di(N-ethyl-4-fluoroanilide) (Et(pFPh)DPA), diphenyl(2-pyridyl)phosphine oxide (Ph2PyPO), and alkyldiamide amine with 2-ethylhexylalkyl chains (ADAAM(EH)) have been identified to exhibit selectivity for Am3+ over Cm3+. In this work, the structures, bonding nature, and thermodynamic behaviors of a series of representative Am- and Cm-complexes with these ligands have been systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on our calculations, the ONO angle formed by three donor atoms of the ligand in the Am-complex is slightly larger than that in its Cm-analogue. The studied ligands show their preference toward Am3+ by opening their “mouths” slightly wider. According to the Mayer bond order and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses, the interactions between the O donor atoms of these ligands and Am3+ and Cm3+ ions show some weak partial covalent character, and compared to the Am–O bond, there is relatively more covalency in the Cm–O bond in the corresponding complex. However, opposite results can be found in the Am–N and Cm–N bonding for the first two ligands. Particularly, for the better separation ligand ADAAM(EH), the Am–N and Cm–N interactions are extremely weak and no covalent character exists in the bonding. Nevertheless, the difference between the very weak Am–N and Cm–N interactions still leads to a better performance of ADAAM(EH). Based on the comparison of these ligands, we can find that weakening the binding ability of N atoms in the ligand may increase the difference between the Am–N and Cm–N interactions, thus enhancing the Am3+/Cm3+ separation ability of the ligand. Our study might provide new insights into understanding the selectivity of these three N, O combined ligands toward minor actinides and pave the way for designing efficient Am3+/Cm3+ extraction and separation ligands.

Herein, we report a new uranyl–organic polyhedron U4L4 (L = BTPCA) assembled from uranyl and a semirigid tritopic ligand. By adjusting the carbon chain length of organic templates, two complexes can be obtained based on the diverse secondary assembly of U4L4 cages. The mechanism of different arrangements of U4L4 cages induced by organic templates was explored in detail.

A synergistic strategy for enhancing U(VI) capture under highly acidic conditions (2 M HNO3) by radiation resistant phosphonate-functionalized two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks with tailor-made binding sites bearing a strong affinity was described. The combination of the radiation resistant characteristic with a strong acid-resistant property endows COFs with practical capabilities for actinide capture from real radioactive liquid waste.

The stability of many MOFs is not satisfactory, which severely limits the exploration of their potential applications. Given this, we have proposed a strategy to improve the stability of MOFs by introducing alkali metal K+ capable of coordinating with metal nodes, which finally induces the interpenetrating uranyl-porphyrin framework to connect as a whole (IHEP-9). The stability experiments reveal that the IHEP-9 has good thermal stability up to 400 °C and can maintain its crystalline state in the aqueous solution with pH ranging from 2 to 11. The catalytic activity of IHEP-9 as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for CO2 cycloaddition under the driving of visible light at room temperature is also demonstrated. This induced interpenetration and fixation method may be promising for the fabrication of more functional MOFs with improved structural stability.

The design and development of a water-soluble heterocyclic ligand are believed to be an alternative way for improving the separation efficiency of actinides from lanthanides. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel hydrophilic multidentate ligand: disulfonated N,N'-diphenyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline (DS-Ph-DAPhen) with soft and hard donor atoms, as a masking agent in aqueous solutions for Am(III) separation. The combination of N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyldiglycolamide in kerosene and DS-Ph-DAPhen in aqueous phases could separate Am(III) from Eu(III) across a range of nitric acid concentrations with very high selectivity. The coordination behaviors of Eu(III) with DS-Ph-DAPhen in aqueous solutions were studied by UV-vis titration, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. The results indicated that Eu(III) ions could form both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with the DS-Ph-DAPhen ligand in aqueous solution. Density functional theory calculation suggests that there are more covalent characters for Am-N bonds than that for Eu-N bonds in the complexes, which supports the better selectivity of the DS-Ph-DAPhen ligand toward Am(III) over Eu(III). This work demonstrates a feasible alternative approach to separating trivalent actinides from lanthanides with high selectivity.

The separation of actinides has a vital place in nuclear fuel reprocessing, recovery of radionuclides, and remediation of environmental contamination. Here we propose a new paradigm of nanocluster-based actinide separation, namely, nanoextraction, that can achieve efficient sequestration of uranium in an unprecedented form of giant coordination nanocages using a cone-shaped macrocyclic pyrogallol[4]arene as the extractant. The U24-based hexameric pyrogallol[4]arene nanocages with distinctive [U2(PG)2] binuclear units (PG = pyrogallol) that rapidly assembled in situ in monophasic solvent were identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering. Comprehensive biphasic extraction studies showed that this novel separation strategy has enticing advantages such as fast kinetics, high efficiency, and good selectivity over lanthanides, thereby demonstrating its potential for efficient separation of actinide ions.

Diglycolamide-based ligands have recently received increased attention due to their outstanding affinity for trivalent actinides and lanthanides. The structure optimization of the ligands, however, still remains a hot topic to achieve better extraction performance. In this work, we prepare and investigate three multidentate diglycolamide ligands for the selective separation of Eu(III) over Am(III) from a nitric acid solution to explore the effect on the extraction of alkyl groups on the nitrogen atoms in the center of the BisDGA ligands. The introduction of ethyl or isopropyl groups on the central nitrogen atoms greatly increased the distribution ratios of trivalent metal ions and enhanced the separation factor of Eu(III) over Am(III). The complexation behaviors of Eu(III) and Am(III) ions were studied by slope analyses, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The results indicated that the trivalent metal ions were extracted as 1:2 and 1:3 complexes for all three BisDGA ligands during the extraction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verified the relevant experimental conclusion that the selectivity of THEE-BisDGA for Eu(III) is better than that for Am(III). The metal-DGA bonds in the ML3(NO3)3 complexes seem to be stronger than those in ML2(NO3)3 complexes.

In molten LiCl salt at 973 K, Nd-Si alloy was successfully prepared by direct electro reduction of a mixed oxide of Nd2O3-SiO2 or Nd2O3-Si at a constant potential. The reduction mechanism was studied by CV through metal cavity electrode in conjunction with XRD, SEM and EDS results of the electrolytic products under different conditions. It was found that the reduction process of Nd2O3-SiO2 was carried out in two steps. First, SiO2 was reduced to elemental silicon, and then Nd2O3 was deposited on silicon to form Nd-Si alloys. In addition, the effects of the electrolysis voltage have been investigated. As a result, it was found that the reduction rate increased with the increasing of the electrolysis voltage, and it was easy to prepare pure Nd-Si alloys when the atomic content of silicon was 50% in the mixed oxides. This work first reported the preparation of Nd-Si alloy by direct electroreduction of its oxides.

In this work, we systematically explored a series of heterocyclic N-donor ligands (L1 = dipyridazino[4,3-c:3',4'-h]acridine, L2 = dipyridazino[3,4-a:4',3'-j]phenazine, L3 = 2,6-di(cinnolin-3-yl)pyridine)), as well as their substituted derivatives, and compared their extraction and complexation ability toward An(III) and Ln(III) ions by using quasi-relativistic density functional theory (DFT). We found that the pyridazine N atoms probably play a notable role in electron donation to metal cations by molecular orbital (MO) and bond order analyses. Besides, the calculated results clearly verified that these N-donor ligands possess higher coordination affinity toward Am(III) over Eu(III). The rigid ligands (L1 and L2) exhibit higher selective abilities for the Am(III)/Eu(III) separation compared with that of the flexible ligand (L3). For each ligand, the 1:2 (metal/ligand) extraction reaction is predicted to be most probable in the separation process. The introduction of an alkyl group on the lateral chain or an electron-donating group on the main chain gives rise to a better extraction performance of the ligands, and the CyMe4 or MeO substituted ligands show higher extraction and separation ability. Simultaneous introduction of CyMe4 and MeO groups can enhance the extraction ability of the ligand to metal ions, but the separating ability depends on the differences of the extraction capacity of An(III) and Ln(III). This work can help to gain a more in-depth understanding the selectivity differences of similar N-donor ligands and provide more theoretical insights into the design of novel extractants for An(III)/Ln(III) separation.

Efficient separation of neptunium and plutonium from spent nuclear fuel is essential for advanced nuclear fuel cycles. At present, the development of effective actinide separation ligands has become a top priority. As common adsorbents for extracting uranium from seawater, amidoxime-based adsorbents may also be able to separate actinides from high-level liquid waste (HLLW). In this work, the complexation of Np(IV,V,VI) and Pu(IV) and alkyl chains (R = C13H26) modified with amidoximate (AO−) and carboxyl (Ac−) functional groups was systematically studied by quantum chemical calculations. For all the studied complexing species, the RAc− and RAO− ligands act as monodentate or bidentate ligands. Complexes with AO− groups show higher covalency of the metal–ligand bonding than the analogues with Ac− groups, in line with the binding energy analysis. Bonding analysis verifies that these amidoxime/carboxyl-based adsorbents possess higher coordination affinity toward Pu(IV) than toward Np(IV), and the Np(VI) complexes have stronger covalent interactions than Np(V). According to thermodynamic analysis, these adsorbents have the ability to separate Np(IV,V,VI) and Pu(IV), and also exhibit potential performance for partitioning Pu(IV) from Np(IV) under acidic conditions. This work can help to deeply understand the interaction between transuranium elements and amidoxime-based adsorbents, and provide a theoretical basis for the separation of actinides with amidoxime-based adsorbents.

Hybrid donor extractants are a promising class of compounds for the separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides. Here, we investigated a series of sterically loaded diphosphonate ligands based on bipyridine (BiPy-PO-iPr and BiPy-PO-cHex) and phenanthroline (Phen-PO-iPr and Phen-PO-cHex). We studied their complex formation with nitrates of trivalent f-elements in solvent extraction systems (Am and Eu) and homogeneous acetonitrile solutions (Nd, Eu, and Lu). Phenanthroline extractants demonstrated the highest efficiency and selectivity [SF(Am/Eu) up to 14] toward Am(III) extraction from nitric acid solutions among all of the studied diphosphonates of N-heterocycles. The binding constants established by UV-vis titration also indicated stronger binding of sterically impaired diphosphonates compared to the primary substituted diphosphonates. NMR titration and slope analysis during solvent extraction showed the formation of 2:1 complexes at high concentrations (>10-3 mol/L) for phenanthroline-based ligands. According to UV-vis titrations at low concentrations (10-5-10-6 mol/L), the phenanthroline-based ligands formed 1:1 complexes. Bipyridine-based ligands formed 1:1 complexes regardless of the ligand concentration. Luminescence titrations revealed that the quantum yields of the complexes with Eu(III) were 81 ± 8% (BiPy-PO-iPr) and 93 ± 9% (Phen-PO-iPr). Single crystals of the structures [Lu(μ2,κ4-(iPrO)2P(O)Phen(O)2(OiPr))(NO3)2]2 and Eu(Phen-PO-iPr)(NO3)3 were obtained by chemical synthesis with the Phen-PO-iPr ligand. X-ray diffraction studies revealed a closer contact of the f-element with the aromatic N atoms in the case of sterically loaded P═O ligands compared with sterically deficient ligands. Density functional theory calculations allowed us to rationalize the observed selectivity trends in terms of the bond length, Mayer bond order, and preorganization energy.

A novel two-dimensional double-layer anionic uranyl-organic framework, U-TBPCA {[NH2(CH3)2][(UO2)(TBPCA)], where H3TBPCA = 4,4',4″-s-triazine-1,3,5-triyltripamino-methylene-cyclohexane-carboxylate}, with abundant active sites and stability was obtained by assembling UO2(NO3)2·6H2O and a triazine tricarboxylate linker, TBPCA3-. Due to the flexibility of the ligand and diverse coordination modes between carboxyl groups and uranyl ions, U-TBPCA exhibits an intriguing topological structure and steric configuration. This double-layer anionic uranyl-organic framework is highly porous and can be used for selective adsorption of cationic dyes. Due to the presence of high-density metal ions and basic -NH- groups, U-TBPCA acts as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition reaction of carbon dioxide with epoxy compounds. Moreover, the various modes of coordination between the tricarboxylic ligand and uranyl ion were studied by density functional theory calculations, and several simplified models were established to probe the influence of hydrogen bonding between carbon dioxide and U-TBPCA on the ability of U-TBPCA to bind carbon dioxide. This work should aid in improving our understanding of the coordination behavior of uranyl ion as well as the development and utilization of new actinide materials.

In the process of spent fuel reprocessing, it is highly difficult to extract transplutonium elements from adjacent actinides. A deep understanding of the electronic structure of transplutonium complexes is essential for development of steady ligands for in-group separation of transplutonium actinides. In this work, we have systematically explored the potential in-group separation ability of transplutonium elements of typical quadridentate N-donor ligands (phenanthroline-derived bis-triazine, BTPhen derivatives) through quasi-relativistic density functional theory (DFT). Our calculations demonstrate that ligands with electron-donating groups have stronger coordination abilities, and the substitutions of Br and phenol at the 4-position of the 1,10-phenanthroline have a higher effect on the ligand than those at the 5-position. Bonding analysis indicates that the covalent interaction of An3+ complexes becomes stronger from Am to Cf apart from Cm, which is because the energy of the 5f orbital gradually decreases and becomes energy-degenerate with the 2p orbitals of ligands. The most negative values of binding energies indicate the higher stability of Cf3+ complexes, in line with the larger covalency in the Cf-L bonds compared with An-L (An = Am, Cm, Bk). In addition, electron-donating group phenol can enhance the covalent interaction between ligands and heavy actinides. Consequently, the extraction ability of ligands with electron-donating substituents for heavy actinides is generally stronger than other ligands. Nevertheless, these ligands exhibit diverse separation abilities to in-group actinide recovery. Therefore, the enhancement of covalency does not necessarily lead to the improvement of separation ability, which may be caused by different extraction abilities. Compared with the tetradentate N, O-donor ligands (2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthrolinel, DAPhen derivatives), species with BTPhen ligands display stronger covalent interaction and higher extraction capacity. In terms of in-group separation ability, the BTPhen ligands seem to have advantages in separation of californium from curium, while the DAPhen ligands possess stronger abilities to separate americium from curium. These results may afford some afflatus for the development of effective agents for in-group separation of transplutonium elements.

In the present work, we proposed regulating uranyl coordination behavior of cucurbituril-bipyridinium pseudorotaxane ligand by utilizing meta-functionalized bipyridinium dicarboxylate guest. A tailored pseudorotaxane precursor involving 1,1'-(hexane-1,6-diyl)bis(3-cyanopyridin-1-ium) bromide (C6BPCN3) and cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) has designed and synthesized. Through in situ hydrolysis of the pseudorotaxane ligands and their coordination assembly with uranyl cations, seven new uranyl-rotaxane coordination polymers URCP1-URCP7 have been obtained under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of different anions. It is demonstrated that the variation of carboxylate groups from para- to meta-position greatly affected the coordination behaviors of the meta-functionalized pseudorotaxane linkers, which are enriched from simple guest-only binding to host-guest simultaneous coordination and synergistic chelating. This effective regulation on uranyl coordination of supramolecular pseudorotaxane can be attributed to the proximity effect, which refers to the meta-position carboxyl group being spatially closer to the portal carbonyl group of CB[6]. Moreover, by combining other regulation methods such as introducing competing counterions and modulating solution acidity, the nuclearity of the uranyl center and the coordination patterns of the pseudorotaxane ligand can be diversely tuned, which subsequently exert great influence on the final dimensionality of resultant uranyl compounds. This work presents a large diversity of uranyl-based coordination polyrotaxane compounds with fascinating mechanically interlocked components and, most importantly, provides a feasible approach to adjust and control the metal coordination behavior of the pseudorotaxane ligand that might expand the scope of application of such supramolecular ligands.

Phenanthroline-diamide ligands have been reported in the selective separation of actinides over Eu(III); on the contrary, relevant basic coordination chemistry studies are still limited, and extraction under actual application conditions is rarely involved. In this work, N,N'-diethyl-N,N'-ditolyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline [Et-Tol-DAPhen (L)] was applied to explore the coordination performance of lanthanides in simulative high-level liquid waste. For the first time, cascade countercurrent extraction was conducted with Et-Tol-DAPhen as the extractant, which reveals the periodic tendency of the extraction efficiency of lanthanides to decrease gradually as the atomic number increases. Comparison of elements with similar radii verifies the hypothesis that the increase in the atomic number leads to a decrease in the ionic radius, thus reducing the coordination and extraction capacity of ligands. Slope analysis, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and ultraviolet-visible titration results show that the ligand forms 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with lanthanides and the coordination ability follows the tendency of extraction efficiency, and the first crystal structures of Lns(III) with a phenanthroline-diamide ligand, i.e., [LaL(NO3)3(H2O)] and [LaL2(NO3)2][(NO3)], were obtained, which confirms the conclusions described above. This work promises to enhance our comprehension of the chemical properties of Lns(III) and offer new clues for the design and synthesis of novel separation ligands.

The group actinide extraction ligand, N,N′-diethyl-N,N′-ditolyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline (Et-Tol-DAPhen) has been successfully developed in our laboratory recently. In this work, the extraction behaviors of the tetradentate Et-Tol-DAPhen toward Am(III) and Pu(IV) by using 1-(trifluoromethyl)-3-nitrobenzene as the diluent were systematically explored. The effects of HNO3 and ligand concentration as well as temperature were studied in detail. In addition, the selectivity of this ligand towards actinides and the stripping performance of the extraction system were also investigated to assess its potential application for group actinide separation over trivalent lanthanides (Ln(III)). According to our results, Et-Tol-DAPhen exhibits large distribution ratios for both Am(III) and Pu(IV) with high separation factors over Pm(III) in a wide range of acidity. Moreover, Am(III) and Pu(IV) can be efficiently stripped into the aqueous phase via three stages of batch back extraction. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the ligand selectivity towards actinides over Ln(III) probably results from the higher covalency of An-N bonds. The consistency between calculated thermodynamic parameters and experimental observations demonstrates the reasonability of the proposed extraction mechanism. Our findings afford insightful extraction parameters of Et-Tol-DAPhen towards actinides with different oxidation states and justify its versatile coordination abilities with respect to group actinide separation over lanthanides.

The electrochemical behavior of Th(IV) on a bismuth electrode in LiCl–KCl eutectic was investigated by various electrochemical techniques, aiming at in-depth elucidation of basic electrochemical and thermodynamic properties of Th in molten salt. The results of cyclic voltammetry and coulometric titration indicated that the reduction of Th(IV) on a liquid Bi electrode occurred at −0.92 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and was a one-step process with four electrons transferred. In addition, thermodynamic properties of Th in liquid Bi medium were evaluated by coulometric titration method in the temperature range from 723 to 798 K. The redox peaks of Bi2Th intermetallic compound were detected at −1.13 and −1.05 V, and the corresponding Gibbs free energy of formation was measured by open circuit chronopotentiometry (OCP). Finally, galvanostatic electrolysis (GE) was conducted on a liquid Bi electrode to extract Th from molten salt at 773 K. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) were applied to characterize the composition and morphology of the products, and revealed the formation of Bi2Th intermetallic compound.
