Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has attracted considerable attention for producing 3D engineered cellular microenvironments that replicate complex and sophisticated native extracellular matrices (ECM) as well as the spatiotemporal gradients of numerous physicochemical and biological cues. Although various hydrogel-based bioinks have been reported, the development of advanced bioink materials that can reproduce the complexity of ECM accurately and mimic the intrinsic property of laden cells is still a challenge. This paper reports 3D printable bioinks composed of phenol-rich gelatin (GHPA) and graphene oxide (GO) as a component for a myogenesis-inducing material, which can form a hydrogel network in situ by a dual enzyme-mediated cross-linking reaction. The in situ curable GO/GHPA hydrogel can be utilized successfully as 3D-printable bioinks to provide suitable cellular microenvironments with facilitated myogenic differentiation of C2C12 skeletal myoblasts. Overall, we suggest that functional bioinks may be useful in muscle tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Nb2O5 has attracted much attention in various research filed such as hybrid capacitors, photo/electrocatalysis, and especially Li-ion batteries (LIBs) due to stable structure and high safety. Nevertheless, its low electronic conductivity (~ 3×10−6 S cm−1) degrades Li-storage performance that limits the practical use in LIBs. Here, we present a facile method for synthesis of T-Nb2O5 nanospheres/reduced graphene oxide composites by using niobium oxalate and bituminous coal as raw materials via a solvothermal method and subsequent calcination to enhance the conductivity of Nb2O5. In this work, the prepared Nb2O5 particles have excellent crystallinity that can be uniformly distributed onto the surface of the rGO layer to form Nb2O5/rGO composites. The electrochemical properties indicate that Nb2O5/rGO electrodes exhibit outstanding capacity, excellent reversibility, and superior cycle stability compared to other transition metal oxide-based electrodes. Notably, the initial capacities of the Nb2O5/rGO electrode at 0.02 A g−1 are 603 and 1104 mAh g−1, and the capacity still maintained 332 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g−1. Our synthetic approach provides a viable route to produce anode materials in a composite form facilitating nanostructured Nb2O5 with rGO exfoliated from bituminous coal for excellent performance in LIBs.

Cells respond directly to the chemical and topographical cues of the engineered substrate. To date, recent extensive studies have been witnessed on the wide development of biomimetic substrates that can regulate the cellular behaviors by establishing the specific cues of the substrate. It is well known that the topographical features with nanoscale and microscale strongly modulate the behaviors of cells, including adhesion, migration, proliferation, and differentiation. Herein, we present a simple and robust strategy to generate the patterned arrays of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on a substrate to be used for the cellular interfaces. The rGO patterned arrays were prepared by an evaporative self-assembly process, which is a highly efficient technique for the controlled deposition of rGO sheets on a flat substrate. Such periodic patterned arrays of rGO could be utilized as a micron topographic substratum for living cell culture to observe the growth and alignment behaviors of C2C12 skeletal and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). The exquisite evaluations showed that both cells were regularly grown along the rGO patterned arrays leading to the well-defined contact guidance, but the only C2C12 myoblasts exhibited slightly higher level in the morphological alignment features to the rGO patterned arrays, compared to the VSMCs. Our findings suggest that the nanotextured thin films and patterned arrays of rGO can serve as promising biomimetic substrates for skeletal muscle cells and provide subtle effects on cellular morphology discriminating in their responses.

Graphene nanoribbons are a greatly intriguing form of nanomaterials owing to their unique properties that overcome the limitations associated with a zero bandgap of two-dimensional graphene at room temperature. Thus, the fabrication of graphene nanoribbons has garnered much attention for building high-performance field-effect transistors. Consequently, various methodologies reported previously have brought significant progress in the development of highly ordered graphene nanoribbons. Nonetheless, easy control in spatial arrangement and alignment of graphene nanoribbons on a large scale is still limited. In this study, we explored a facile, yet effective method for the fabrication of graphene nanoribbons by employing orientationally controlled electrospun polymeric nanowire etch-mask. We started with a thermal chemical vapor deposition process to prepare graphene monolayer, which was conveniently transferred onto a receiving substrate for electrospun polymer nanowires. The polymeric nanowires act as a robust etching barrier underlying graphene sheets to harvest arrays of the graphene nanoribbons. On varying the parametric control in the process, the size, morphology, and width of electrospun polymer nanowires were easily manipulated. Upon O2 plasma etching, highly aligned arrays of graphene nanoribbons were produced, and the sacrificial polymeric nanowires were completely removed. The graphene nanoribbons were used to implement field-effect transistors in a bottom-gated configuration. Such approaches could realistically yield a relatively improved current on&ndash, off ratio of ~30 higher than those associated with the usual micro-ribbon strategy, with the clear potential to realize reproducible high-performance devices.

Graphical Abstract The topographical interface of the extracellular environment has been appreciated as a principal biophysical regulator for modulating cell functions, such as adhesion, migration, proliferation, and differentiation. Despite the existed approaches that use two-dimensional nanomaterials to provide beneficial effects, opportunities evaluating their impact on stem cells remain open to elicit unprecedented cellular responses. Herein, we report an ultrathin cell-culture platform with potential-responsive nanoscale biointerfaces for monitoring mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). We designed an intriguing nanostructured array through self-assembly of graphene oxide sheets and subsequent lithographical patterning method to produce chemophysically defined regions. MSCs cultured on anisotropic micro/nanoscale patterned substrate were spontaneously organized in a highly ordered configuration mainly due to the cell-repellent interactions. Moreover, the spatially aligned MSCs were spontaneously differentiated into smooth muscle cells upon the specific crosstalk between cells. This work provides a robust strategy for directing stem cells and differentiation, which can be utilized as a potential cell culture platform to understand cell–substrate or cell–cell interactions, further developing tissue repair and stem cell-based therapies. Background The excellent physicochemical properties of graphene-based materials, including graphene oxide (GO) and reduced GO (rGO), offer significant technological potential as multifunctional nanomaterials in biomedical fields. Lutein is a type of carotenoid that forms human macular pigments in the retina, where it inhibits harmful blue light and contributes to the strengthening of the antioxidant defense of retinal pigment epithelium cells. Methods Synthesis of the Lutein-rGO (Lu–rGO) complex was carried out for the optimized concentration. Then characterization of material was analyzed through ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis spectra), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Antioxidant activity of Lu–rGO complex was measured by 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), glutathione (GSH) oxidation assay. Then, oxidative stress induction by blue light and analyzed intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Results and Conclusion Based on the FT-IR measurement, the reduction efficiency defined by area was found to be 87.3%, the ID/IG ratio of 0.98 demonstrated by the Lu–rGO complex in the Raman spectrum was slightly higher than that of the original GO. The exhibited significant decrease in the peak intensities of the oxygen functional groups of the XPS spectra of the Lu–rGO complex was observed compared with the GO. In the TEM image for the Lu–rGO complex, folded and wrinkled nanostructures over the lutein-covered rGO surface were evidenced by tight molecular binding. The Lu–rGO complex provided superior DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity than GO and lutein alone, and the oxidation of GSH was suppressed. It was confirmed that the content of intracellular ROS and lysosomes, increased by blue light, was reduced after treatment with the Lu–rGO complex on ARPE-19 cells. Background Titanium (Ti) has been utilized as hard tissue replacement owing to its superior mechanical and bioinert property, however, lack in tissue compatibility and biofunctionality has limited its clinical use. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is one of the graphene derivatives that possess extraordinary biofunctionality and are known to induce osseointegration in vitro and in vivo. In this study, rGO was uniformly coated by meniscus-dragging deposition (MDD) technique to fabricate rGO-Ti substrate for orthopedic and dental implant application. Methods The physicochemical characteristics of rGO-coated Ti (rGO-Ti) substrates were evaluated by atomic force microscopy, water contact angle, and Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were cultured on the rGO-Ti substrate, and then their cellular behaviors such as growth and osteogenic differentiation were determined by a cell counting kit-8 assay, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay, and alizarin red S staining. Results rGO was coated uniformly on Ti substrates by MDD process, which allowed a decrease in the surface roughness and contact angle of Ti substrates. While rGO-Ti substrates significantly increased cell proliferation after 7 days of incubation, they significantly promoted ALP activity and matrix mineralization, which are early and late differentiation markers, respectively. Conclusion It is suggested that rGO-Ti substrates can be effectively utilized as dental and orthopedic bone substitutes since these graphene derivatives have potent effects on stimulating the osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs and showed superior bioactivity and osteogenic potential.

Over the past few decades, carbon nanomaterials, including carbon nanofibers, nanocrystalline diamonds, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanodots, and graphene and its derivatives, have gained the attention of bioengineers and medical researchers as they possess extraordinary physicochemical, mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Recently, surface functionalization with carbon nanomaterials in dental and orthopedic implants has emerged as a novel strategy for reinforcement and as a bioactive cue due to their potential for osseointegration. Numerous developments in fabrication and biological studies of carbon nanostructures have provided various novel opportunities to expand their application to hard tissue regeneration and restoration. In this minireview, the recent research trends in surface functionalization of orthopedic and dental implants with coating carbon nanomaterials are summarized. In addition, some seminal methodologies for physicomechanical and electrochemical coatings are discussed. In conclusion, it is shown that further development of surface functionalization with carbon nanomaterials may provide innovative results with clinical potential for improved osseointegration after implantation.

Patterning of surfaces with a simple strategy provides insights into the functional interfaces by suitable modification of the surface by novel techniques. Especially, highly ordered structural topographies and chemical features from the wide range of interfaces have been considered as important characteristics to understand the complex relationship between the surface chemistries and biological systems. Here, we report a simple fabrication method to create patterned surfaces over large areas using evaporative self-assembly that is designed to produce a sacrificial template and lithographic etch masks of polymeric stripe patterns, ranging from micrometer to nanoscale. By facilitating a roll-on-plate geometry, the periodically patterned surface structures formed by repetitive slip-stick motions were thoroughly examined to be used for the deposition of the Au nanoparticles decorated graphene oxide (i.e., AuNPs, ~21 nm) and the formation of conductive graphene channels. The fluorescently labeled thiol-modified DNA was applied on the patterned arrays of graphene oxide (GO)/AuNPs, and biotin-streptavidin sensitive devices built with graphene-based transistors (GFETs, effective mobility of ~320 cm2 V&minus, 1 s&minus, 1) were demonstrated as examples of the platform for the next-generation biosensors with the high sensing response up to ~1 nM of target analyte (i.e., streptavidin). Our strategy suggests that the stripe patterned arrays of polymer films as sacrificial templates can be a simple route to creating highly sensitive biointerfaces and highlighting the development of new chemically patterned surfaces composed of graphene-based nanomaterials.

Graphene, a two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanomaterial, has received great attention owing to its advantageous characteristics, including superior electrical, chemical and physical properties. In particular, exfoliation of graphite with strong oxidants has been explored to prepare a suspension of individual 2D graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets dispersed in various types of solvents. This colloidal suspension can readily be employed in a wide range of promising potential applications. However, one major challenge is to assemble such individual nanosheets on defined areas of surfaces forming specific structures. Here, we developed a simple and robust one-step strategy to create highly regular ordered nanostructures composed of chemically reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheet building blocks on SiO2/Si or glass substrates over large areas. An aqueous suspension of rGO nanosheets dispersed in a volatile solvent was subjected to a confined geometry to induce a spontaneous formation of rGO patterned arrays with unprecedented regularity by utilizing both a controlled coffee ring effect and consecutive stick-slip motions of rGO solutions during the drying process. As a result, the generation of ultrathin nanotextured films in the form of micropatterns (i.e., concentric gradient rGO coffee rings) was effectively tailored. As a biological approach, to fully utilize patterned rGO associated with the nanoscale surface topography, we used these patterned rGO arrays as a biomimetic in vitro architecture to study interfacial interactions of living cells such as fibroblasts, myoblasts, and neuronal cells. The observed results show that the patterned rGO arrays can be used as manipulated cellular responsive templates to form living cell assemblies and related patterns that are useful for regenerative tissue engineering.

The ongoing expedition to harvest ambient renewable energies from the environment by wearable fabric-based nanogenerators is a promising route to sustainably drive the small electronics with unprecedented opportunities in next-generation self-powered devices. Here, we report a simple method to fabricate a washable, breathable and wearable triboelectric nanogenerator that harvests the energy of triboelectricity through an enhanced friction surface area made of the gold nanodot-pattern crafted by electron-beam sputtering on an inexpensive polyurethane surface. The gold deposition which crops-up as regular small islands, under oxygen plasma is subsequently, etched into nanodot-pattern on a polyurethane surface to convert mechanical energy into an electrical signal via in-plane sliding mode with a maximum output of ~2 μW. The nanodot engineering plays an important role to improve the active sliding frictional area, as well as the corresponding output-performance of the triboelectric nanogenerator. To demonstrate the potential applications of our approach, we designed a self-powered wearable device integrated with clothes to harvest different kinds of mechanical energies from the human motion. To elevate the power output-performance, we fabricated waterproof fiber with flutter membrane and quantified triboelectric charge against airflow speed. At mild wind speed, the fabricated triboelectric nanogenerator shows a maximum output of 70 µW. Besides, as an example of practical application, the nanogenerator constructed can produce an improved capacitor charge voltage to drive dozens of light-emitting diodes and apply them to low power consumption devices. This technology is produced in a simple and cost-effective manner and reports an easy way to produce an energy harvesting system based on triboelectric effects using a sustainable and renewable energy source of body motions and air flows. This system is expected to be one of the best green energy sources for portable and wearable electronic devices in the near future.

There is a critical demand for the highly qualified synthesis of graphene with precisely controlled thickness over a large coverage area. Selective growth can be considered as one method of preparing a vertically stacked graphene, but it usually requires elaborately alloyed substrates for chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Here, we report on a newly developed synthesis strategy for a selectively patterned grown graphene sheet in a spatially defined multithickness scale, exhibiting single- and bilayer graphene produced by a conventional CVD process. In particular, a sequential CVD growth technique on a single Cu substrate was used to produce highly ordered and alternatively patterned single- and bilayer graphene, maintaining its continuous configuration in a simplified and scalable manner. Our regrowth process did not require multiple transfer procedures or an alloying catalytic substrate to satisfy the properties of graphene associated with the needs for various applications. We also investigated the most valid mechanisms for our regrowth CVD process, which suggests that it is useful for the cost-effective synthetic approach into a built-in heterostructured single- and bilayer graphene. Finally, we demonstrated the possible accesses of transparent flexible electrodes and monolithically self-integrated all-graphene-based thin-film transistors to fully utilize regrown graphene.

Rotating cylindrical stamp-based nanoimprint technique has many advantages, including the continuous fabrication of intriguing micro/nanostructures and rapid pattern transfer on a large scale. Despite these advantages, the previous nanoimprint lithography has rarely been used for producing sophisticated nanoscale patterns on a non-planar substrate that has many extended applications. Here, the simple integration of nanoimprinting process with a help of a transparent stamp wrapped on the cylindrical roll and UV optical source in the core to enable high-throughput pattern transfer, particularly on a fabric substrate is demonstrated. Moreover, as a functional resin material, this innovative strategy involves a synergistic approach on the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymer, which are spatially organized free-standing perforated nanostructures such as nano/microscale lines, posts, and holes patterns on various woven or nonwoven blank substrates. The proposed materials can serve as a self-encoded filtration medium for selective separation of formaldehyde molecules. It is envisioned that the combinatorial fabrication process and attractive material paves the way for designing next-generation separation systems in use to capture industrial or household toxic substances.

Owing to the surface interactions at the biomaterial-cell interface inevitable for improved cellular functions, a variety of efforts has been made for the development of the physical and chemical strategies to synchronize and adjust cellular behaviors by utilizing the micro/nanopatterned structures. As one of the most recent emerging nanomaterials, graphene oxide (GO) or reduced GO has increasingly utilized as biocompatible scaffolds, antibacterial films, and biosensor platforms. Here, we report a simple fabrication method for the alternately patterned arrays of the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptide and GO (RGD/GO) on a single substrate of glass via a sequential process of self-assembly. The responses of fibroblasts to the nanoscopic topographical cues and their preference were explored on the well-separated GO microstructures with or without micropatterned RGD stripes. When separately cultured on those two different arrays of GO and RGD/GO micropatterns, the cells expressed noticeable discrimination in cellular behaviors such as the adhesion, localized population and alignment, and proliferation, according to the presence and absence of alternate RGD patterns. It was also revealed that the GO surface exhibits preferable interactions with cells through the developed focal adhesion sites to the RGD surface. Conclusively, our findings suggest that alternate micropatterns of RGD peptide and graphene family nanomaterials (i.e., GO) may not only be employed for an analyzing device to precisely control the cell migration/motility but also applied in a biosensor interface for electrochemical detection and analysis of cellular responsiveness under a specific external stimulus.

In recent years, much research has been suggested and examined for the development of tissue engineering scaffolds to promote cellular behaviors. In our study, RGD peptide and graphene oxide (GO) co-functionalized poly(lactide-co-glycolide, PLGA) (RGD-GO-PLGA) nanofiber mats were fabricated via electrospinning, and their physicochemical and thermal properties were characterized to explore their potential as biofunctional scaffolds for vascular tissue engineering. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the RGD-GO-PLGA nanofiber mats were readily fabricated and composed of random-oriented electrospun nanofibers with average diameter of 558 nm. The successful co-functionalization of RGD peptide and GO into the PLGA nanofibers was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic analysis. Moreover, the surface hydrophilicity of the nanofiber mats was markedly increased by co-functionalizing with RGD peptide and GO. It was found that the mats were thermally stable under the cell culture condition. Furthermore, the initial attachment and proliferation of primarily cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) on the RGD-GO-PLGA nanofiber mats were evaluated. It was revealed that the RGD-GO-PLGA nanofiber mats can effectively promote the growth of VSMCs. In conclusion, our findings suggest that the RGD-GO-PLGA nanofiber mats can be promising candidates for tissue engineering scaffolds effective for the regeneration of vascular smooth muscle.

A new type of quasi-distributed sensor system is implemented using an active mode locking (AML) laser cavity with multiple partially reflecting segments. The mode locking frequency of the AML laser is linearly proportional to the overall lasing cavity length. To implement multiple resonators having multiple reflection points installed in a sensing fiber, two types of partial reflectors (PRs) are implemented for an in-line configuration, one with fiber Bragg grating and the other with a fiber Fabry&ndash, Perot interferometer. Since the laser has oscillated only when the modulation frequencies for the mode locking frequency match with the corresponding resonator lengths, it is possible to read the multiple partially reflecting segments along the sensing fiber. The difference between two corresponding mode locking frequencies is changing proportionally with the segment length variation between two PRs upon strain application. The segment length change caused by the applied strain can be successfully measured with a linear sensitivity between mode locking frequency and displacement, linearity over 0.99, and spatial position resolution below meter order.

A disposable glucose biosensor has been fabricated on the surface of a cost-effective pencil graphite electrode (PGE) by an electrochemical method, using glucose oxidase (GOx) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Electrochemical pre-treatment of the PGE enables the adsorption of the rGO–GOx biocomposite. The biocomposites of GOx and rGO were simply prepared by the electrochemical potential cycling method. Efficient immobilization of rGO–GOx is confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry measurements. The rGO nanosheets enhance direct electron transfer (DET) between GOx and the electrode surface. Determination of glucose indirectly by O2 reduction was achieved, which showed high sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility and stability without a redox mediator. The sensor exhibits a linear current response for a wide range of glucose concentrations between 1.0 × 10−5 and 1.0 × 10−3 M (R = 0.998), and a dynamic range up to 10.0 × 10−3 M with a detection limit of 5.8 μM. The rGO–GOx biosensor showed an excellent anti-interference ability against electroactive species and proved to be useful for the determination of glucose in human serum samples.

Osteoprogenitor cells, known as preosteoblasts, that arise from mesenchymal stem cells in the bone marrow are types of cells that work in the growth or repair of bones. These cells possess the prominent potential to differentiate toward the osteogenic lineage, and therefore offer promising opportunities for bone tissue engineering and regenerative therapy. However, to fully exploit the application of osteoprogenitor cells in bone regeneration, it is critical to develop biochemical, physical or pharmaceutical factors that can precisely control their osteogenic differentiation. In this study, we hypothesized that reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) composites could synergistically enhance the osteogenic differentiation of preosteoblasts. Without interference with the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts, rGO/HAp composites synergistically enhanced the osteogenic differentiation of the preosteoblasts, which had been confirmed by determining alkaline phosphatase activity and mineralization of calcium and phosphate as early and late stage markers of osteogenic differentiation. This osteogenic activity mediated by rGO/HAp composites was further accelerated under osteogenic culture conditions. It is suggested that rGO/HAp hybrid composites can serve as biocompatible, transferable, and implantable scaffolds for bone regeneration because these graphene-based composite materials have the potential to promote spontaneous osteogenesis in the absence of any osteogenic factors.

The interfacial friction of graphene transferred on a SiO2 grating was investigated using a lateral force microscope with various sliding directions. Quantification of the frictional force of graphene, using adhesion force and friction loop measured from both sloped and flat surfaces, revealed that graphene has a low surface energy and repetitive friction switching from 0.066 to 0.087, which indicates an extremely low shear strength of the contact junction, along with a peculiar periodicity of 60°, which is consistent with the lattice periodicity of graphene. The observed periodicity was attributed to the atomistic incommensurability at the interface, with minimal lattice deformation under interfacial sliding conditions.

We present broadband antireflective microstructures (AMSs) for high-performance imaging systems in mid- and far-infrared wavelength ranges. Diffraction efficiencies of AMSs on ZnS substrates were calculated using a rigorous coupled wave analysis method. The results show the effect of height, period, and shape of AMSs on the reflection characteristics. We also discuss the optimum geometry of AMSs by considering fabrication tolerances.

Tissues are often damaged by physical trauma, infection or tumors. A slight injury heals naturally through the normal healing process, while severe injury causes serious health implications. Therefore, many efforts have been devoted to treat and repair various tissue defects. Recently, tissue engineering approaches have attracted a rapidly growing interest in biomedical fields to promote and enhance healing and regeneration of large-scale tissue defects. On the other hand, with the recent advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology, various nanomaterials have been suggested as novel biomaterials. Graphene, a two-dimensional atomic layer of graphite, and its derivatives have recently been found to possess promoting effects on various types of cells. In addition, their unique properties, such as outstanding mechanical and biological properties, allow them to be a promising option for hard tissue regeneration. Herein, we summarized recent research advances in graphene-based nanocomposites for hard tissue regeneration, and highlighted their promising potentials in biomedical and tissue engineering.

Graphene is a two-dimensional atomic layer of graphite, where carbon atoms are assembled in a honeycombed lattice structure. Recently, graphene family nanomaterials, including pristine graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide, have increasingly attracted a great deal of interest from researchers in a variety of science, engineering and industrial fields because of their unique structural and functional features. In particular, extensive studies have been actively conducted in the biomedical and related fields, including multidisciplinary and emerging areas, as their stimulating effects on cell behaviors have been becoming an increasing concern. Herein, we are attempting to summarize some of recent findings in the fields of tissue regeneration concerning the graphene family nanomaterial-functionalized biomimetic scaffolds, and to provide the promising perspectives for the possible applications of graphene family nanomaterial.

Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) have great potential as cell sources for bone tissue engineering and regeneration, but the control and induction of their specific differentiation into bone cells remain challenging. Graphene-based nanomaterials are considered attractive candidates for biomedical applications such as scaffolds in tissue engineering, substrates for SC differentiation and components of implantable devices, due to their biocompatible and bioactive properties. Despite the potential biomedical applications of graphene and its derivatives, only limited information is available regarding their osteogenic activity. This study concentrates upon the effects of reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-coated hydroxyapatite (HAp) composites on osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. The average particle sizes of HAp and rGO were 1270 ± 476 nm and 438 ± 180 nm, respectively. When coated on HAp particulates, rGO synergistically enhanced spontaneous osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs, without hampering their proliferation. This result was confirmed by determining alkaline phosphatase activity and mineralization of calcium and phosphate as early and late stage markers of osteogenic differentiation. It is suggested that rGO-coated HAp composites can be effectively utilized as dental and orthopedic bone fillers since these graphene-based particulate materials have potent effects on stimulating the spontaneous differentiation of MSCs and show superior bioactivity and osteoinductive potential.

In recent years, graphene and its derivatives have attracted much interest in various fields, including biomedical applications. In particular, increasing attention has been paid to the effects of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on cellular behaviors. On the other hand, dicalcium phosphate (DCP) has been widely used in dental and pharmaceutical fields. In this study, DCP composites coated with rGO (DCP-rGO composites) were prepared at various concentration ratios (DCP to rGO concentration ratios of 5:2.5, 5:5, and 5:10 μg/mL, respectively), and their physicochemical properties were characterized. In addition, the effects of DCP-rGO hybrid composites on MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts were investigated. It was found that the DCP-rGO composites had an irregular granule-like structure with a diameter in the range order of the micrometer, and were found to be partially covered and interconnected with a network of rGO. The zeta potential analysis showed that although both DCP microparticles and rGO sheets had negative surface charge, the DCP-rGO composites could be successfully formed by the unique structural properties of rGO. In addition, it was demonstrated that the DCP-rGO composites significantly increased alkaline phosphatase activity and extracellular calcium deposition, indicating that the DCP-rGO hybrid composites can accelerate the osteogenic differentiation by the synergistic effects of rGO and DCP. Therefore, in conclusion, it is suggested that the DCP-rGO hybrid composites can be potent factors in accelerating the bone tissue regeneration.

A zero-power, low-cost ultraviolet (UV)-C colorimetric sensor is demonstrated using a gallium oxide and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid via photoelectrochemical reactions. A wide bandgap semiconductor (WBS) such as gallium oxide with an energy bandgap of 4.9 eV generates electron-hole pairs (EHPs) when exposed under a mercury lamp emitting 254 nm. While the conventional UVC sensors employing WBS convert the generated EHPs into an electrical signal via a solid-state junction device (SSD), our newly proposed UVC sensory system works by converting EHPs into an electrochemical reaction. The electrochemical reaction causes the degradation of a cationic thiazine redox dye, methylene blue (MB) and thereby spontaneously changes its color. As more rGO was hybridized with the gallium oxide, MB degradation was effectively expedited. Thus, the level of MB degradation under UVC can be evaluated as a UVC indicator. Unlike conventional SSD-based UVC sensors, our responsive colorimetric sensor can be applied where needed inexpensively and zero power.

The development of three dimensional (3D) scaffolds for promoting and stimulating cell growth is one of the greatest concerns in biomedical and tissue engineering. In the present study, novel biomimetic 3D scaffolds composed of polyurethane (PU) foam and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were designed, and their potential as 3D scaffolds for skeletal tissue regeneration was explored. The GO-coated PU foams (GO-PU foams) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. It was revealed that the 3D GO-PU foams consisted of an interconnected foam-like network structure with an approximate 300 μm pore size, and the GO was uniformly distributed in the PU foams. On the other hand, the myogenic stimulatory effects of GO on skeletal myoblasts were also investigated. Moreover, the cellular behaviors of the skeletal myoblasts within the 3D GO-PU foams were evaluated by immunofluorescence analysis. Our findings showed that GO can significantly promote spontaneous myogenic differentiation without any myogenic factors, and the 3D GO-PU foams can provide a suitable 3D microenvironment for cell growth. Furthermore, the 3D GO-PU foams stimulated spontaneous myogenic differentiation via the myogenic stimulatory effects of GO. Therefore, this study suggests that the 3D GO-PU foams are beneficial to myogenesis, and can be used as biomimetic 3D scaffolds for skeletal tissue engineering.

Cylindrical silk fiber (SF) was coated with Graphene oxide (GO) for capacitive humidity sensor applications. Negatively charged GO in the solution was attracted to the positively charged SF surface via electrostatic force without any help from adhesive intermediates. The magnitude of the positively charged SF surface was controlled through the static electricity charges created on the SF surface. The GO coating ability on the SF improved as the SF’s positive charge increased. The GO-coated SFs at various conditions were characterized using an optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, and LCR meter. Unlike the intact SF, the GO-coated SF showed clear response-recovery behavior and well-behaved repeatability when it was exposed to 20% relative humidity (RH) and 90% RH alternatively in a capacitive mode. This approach allows humidity sensors to take advantage of GO’s excellent sensing properties and SF’s flexibility, expediting the production of flexible, low power consumption devices at relatively low costs.

In this study, vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanowires (NWs) with a diameter of 100–200 nm and a length of up to several micrometers as cathode for lithium ion batteries are synthesize using an electrospinning method. The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and V2O5 NWs (GVO) composites are form by wet mixing the electrospun V2O5 NWs and rGO. Surface morphologies, microstructure and elemental mapping, and chemical bonding states of the composites are characterize. The initial and 60 cycles discharge capacities of GVO composite composed of 1 wt% rGO show up to 225 mAh g−1 and 125 mAh g−1, even higher than pure V2O5 NWs, when the lithium ion battery cycled between 2.0 and 4.0 V with a rate of 0.2 C, because of highly conductive rGO. The GVO composite could be promising as a high performance cathode for lithium ion batteries.

The zero (0-D) and one-dimensional (1-D) carbon nanomaterials have gained attention among researchers because they exhibit a larger surface area to volume ratio, and a smaller size. Furthermore, carbon is ubiquitously present in all living organisms. However, toxicity is a major concern while utilizing carbon nanomaterials for biomedical applications such as drug delivery, biosensing, and tissue regeneration. In the present review, we have summarized some of the recent findings of cellular and animal level toxicity studies of 0-D (carbon quantum dot, graphene quantum dot, nanodiamond, and carbon black) and 1-D (single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes) carbon nanomaterials. The in vitro toxicity of carbon nanomaterials was exemplified in normal and cancer cell lines including fibroblasts, osteoblasts, macrophages, epithelial and endothelial cells of different sources. Similarly, the in vivo studies were illustrated in several animal species such as rats, mice, zebrafish, planktons and, guinea pigs, at various concentrations, route of administrations and exposure of nanoparticles. In addition, we have described the unique properties and commercial usage, as well as the similarities and differences among the nanoparticles. The aim of the current review is not only to signify the importance of studying the toxicity of 0-D and 1-D carbon nanomaterials, but also to emphasize the perspectives, future challenges and possible directions in the field.

Recently, the portable and wearable electronic devices, operated in the power range of microwatt to miliwatt, become available thank to the nanotechnology development and become an essential element for a comfortable life. Our recent research interest mainly focuses on the fabrication of piezoelectric nanogenerators based on smart nanomaterials such as zinc oxide novel nanostructure, M13 bacteriophage. In this talk, we present a simple strategy for fabricating the freestanding ZnO nanorods/graphene/ZnO nanorods double sided heterostructures. The characterization of the double sided heterostructures by using SEM, and Raman scattering spectroscopy reveals the key process and working mechanism of a formation of the heterostructure. The mechanism is discussed in detail in term of the decomposed seed layer and the vacancy defect of graphene. The approach consists of a facile one-step fabrication process and could achieve ZnO coverage with a higher number density than that of the epitaxial single heterostructure. The resulting improvement in the number density of nanorods has a direct beneficial effect on the double side heterostructured nanogenerator performance. The total output voltage and current density are improved up to~2 times compared to those of a single heterostructure due to the coupling of the piezoelectric effects from both upward and downward grown nanorods. The facile one-step fabrication process suggests that double sided heterostructures would improve the performance of electrical and optoelectrical device, such as touch pad, pressure sensor, biosensor and dye-sensitized solar cells. Further, ioinspired nanogenerators based on vertically aligned phage nanopillars are inceptively demonstrated. Vertically aligned phage nanopillars enable not only a high piezoelectric response but also a tuneable piezoelectricity. Piezoelectricity is also modulated by tuning of the protein's dipoles in each phage. The sufficient electrical power from phage nanopillars thus holds promise for the development of self-powered implantable and wearable electronics.

Photolithography is a unique process that can effectively manufacture micro/nano-sized patterns on various substrates. On the other hand, the meniscus-dragging deposition (MDD) process can produce a uniform surface of the substrate. Graphene oxide (GO) is the oxidized form of graphene that has high hydrophilicity and protein absorption. It is widely used in biomedical fields such as drug delivery, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering. Herein, we fabricated uniform GO micropatterns via MDD and photolithography. The physicochemical properties of the GO micropatterns were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, cell migration on the GO micropatterns was investigated, and the difference in cell migration on triangle and square GO micropatterns was examined for their effects on cell migration. Our results demonstrated that the GO micropatterns with a desired shape can be finely fabricated via MDD and photolithography. Moreover, it was revealed that the shape of GO micropatterns plays a crucial role in cell migration distance, speed, and directionality. Therefore, our findings suggest that the GO micropatterns can serve as a promising biofunctional platform and cell-guiding substrate for applications to bioelectric devices, cell-on-a-chip, and tissue engineering scaffolds.

Neurons are electrically excitable cells that transmit and process information in the nervous system. Recently, the differentiation of human neural stem cells to neurons has been shown to be enhanced on graphene substrates, and differentiated neurons have been shown to be able to still carry electrical signals when stimulated by graphene electrodes. Graphene films grown by using chemical vapor deposition were transferred onto glass coverslips by using the scooping method and were then coated with fetal bovine serum for a neuronal cell culture. The graphene substrates as biomimetic cues have been shown to enhance the neurite outgrowth of PC-12 cells. Our findings suggest that graphene has a unique surface property that can promote neuronal cells, which should open tremendous opportunities in neuroscience, neural engineering and regenerative medicine.

This study concentrates upon investigating differential cellular responses to carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) such as pristine graphene flakes, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs), in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) vs. the L-929 fibroblast cell line. Characterizing the surface morphology of each CNP by using scanning electron microscopy, we determined their cytotoxicity profiles by quantifying the mitochondrial activity. Graphene was found to have an irregular flake-like shape with various lengths within the ranges of 50 ∼ 1500 nm. The estimated sizes of the SWCNTs and the MWCNTs were about 400 nm and 1000 nm in diameter, respectively and several µm in length. All the CNPs tested here exerted adverse effects on the viability of HDFs even at 15.6 ppm, through intracellular uptake whereas except MWCNTs, they did not show any cytotoxicity against L-929 cells at 250 ppm. This result suggests that CNPs can have a differential influence on normal fibroblasts vs. immortalized ones.

A multi-performance MWCNT-reinforced chitosan nanocomposite was fabricated by two methods: a freeze-drying process associated with the sublimation and compression (SAC) method; and the casting-evaporation (CE) method. We obtained ordered and multilayered structures with limited porosity, and well-dispersed MWCNT structures of the chitosan nanocomposite, especially with the SAC method. In the case of the nanocomposite films prepared by the CE method, the mechanical strength and elongation were significantly increased by up to about 40% compared with the pure chitosan films. On the other hand, the ordered and porous multilayered pure chitosan films prepared by the SAC method showed significantly lower tensile strength and elongation compared to the pure solid chitosan films. However, the relative enhancement of the mechanical properties of multilayered MWCNT/chitosan nanocomposites with porosity was higher, especially in terms of the elongation, which showed a twofold improvement in strain. The relaxed bond, which could be a relatively strong hydrogen bond, between the functional groups in the chitosan chains and the functionalized surface of the MWCNTs might be stretched under stress, thereby improving the ductility of the multilayered nanocomposite films. In addition, the viscoplastic behavior of the films by the CE method could become more active with increasing strain rate. Interestingly, ordered and porous pure chitosan films did not reveal the viscoplastic behavior; it rather presented strain softening and viscoelastic characteristics. However, the interaction between the chitosan chains and the surface-modified MWCNTs could regenerate viscoplasticity of the chitosan films.

This paper describes the fabrication and design principles for using transparent graphene interconnects in stretchable arrays of microscale inorganic light emitting diodes (LEDs) on rubber substrates. We demonstrate several appealing properties of graphene for this purpose, including its ability to spontaneously conform to significant surface topography, in a manner that yields effective contacts even to deep, recessed device regions. Mechanics modeling reveals the fundamental aspects of this process, as well as the use of the same layers of graphene for interconnects designed to accommodate strains of 100% or more, in a completely reversible fashion. These attributes are compatible with conventional thin film processing and can yield high-performance devices in transparent layouts. Graphene interconnects possess attractive features for both existing and emerging applications of LEDs in information display, biomedical systems, and other environments.

The conversion of graphene oxide (GO) into reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is imperative for the electronic device applications of graphene-based materials. Efficient and cost-effective fabrication of highly uniform GO films and the successive reduction into rGO on a large area is still a cumbersome task through conventional protocols. Improved film casting of GO sheets on a polymeric substrate with quick and green reduction processes has a potential that may establish a path to the practical flexible electronics. Herein, we report a facile deposition process of GO on flexible polymer substrates to create highly uniform thin films over a large area by a flow-enabled self-assembly approach. The self-assembly of GO sheets was successfully performed by dragging the trapped solution of GO in confined geometry, which consisted of an upper stationary blade and a lower moving substrate on a motorized translational stage. The prepared GO thin films could be selectively reduced and facilitated from the simple laser direct writing process for programmable circuit printing with the desired configuration and less sample damage due to the non-contact mode operation without the use of photolithography, toxic chemistry, or high-temperature reduction methods. Furthermore, two different modes of the laser operating system for the reduction of GO films turned out to be valuable for the construction of novel graphene-based high-throughput electrical circuit boards compatible with integrating electronic module chips and flexible humidity sensors.

Hundreds of gradient concentric rings of linear conjugated polymer, (poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4- phenylenevinyl-ene], i.e., MEH-PPV) with remarkable regularity over large areas were produced by controlled "stick-slip" motions of the contact line in a confined geometry consisting of a sphere on a flat substrate (i.e., sphere-on-flat geometry). Subsequently, MEH-PPV rings were exploited as a template to direct the formation of gradient concentric rings of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with controlled density. This method is simple, cost effective, and robust, combining two consecutive self-assembly processes, namely, evaporation-induced self-assembly of polymers in a sphere-on-flat geometry, followed by subsequent directed self-assembly of MWNTs on the polymer-templated surfaces.

Well-aligned ZnO nanostructures have been intensively studied over the last decade for remarkable physical properties and enormous applications. Here, we describe a one-step fabrication technique to synthesis freestanding ZnO nanorod/graphene/ZnO nanorod double heterostructure. The preparation of the double heterostructure is performed by using thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and preheating hydrothermal technique. In addition, the morphological properties were characterized by using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The utility of freestanding double heterostructure is demonstrated by fabricating the piezoelectric nanogenerator. The electrical output is improved up to 200% compared to that of a single heterostructure owing to the coupling effect of the piezoelectricity between the arrays of ZnO nanorods on the top and bottom of graphene. This unique double heterostructure have a tremendous potential for applications of electrical and optoelectrical devices where the high number density and specific surface area of nanorod are needed, such as pressure sensor, immuno-biosensor and dye-sensitized solar cells.

Recently, graphene-based nanomaterials, in the form of two dimensional substrates or three dimensional foams, have attracted considerable attention as bioactive scaffolds to promote the differentiation of various stem cells towards specific lineages. On the other hand, the potential advantages of using graphene-based hybrid composites directly as factors inducing cellular differentiation as well as tissue regeneration are unclear. This study examined whether nanocomposites of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) (rGO/HAp NCs) could enhance the osteogenesis of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts and promote new bone formation. When combined with HAp, rGO synergistically promoted the spontaneous osteodifferentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells without hindering their proliferation. This enhanced osteogenesis was corroborated from determination of alkaline phosphatase activity as early stage markers of osteodifferentiation and mineralization of calcium and phosphate as late stage markers. Immunoblot analysis showed that rGO/HAp NCs increase the expression levels of osteopontin and osteocalcin significantly. Furthermore, rGO/HAp grafts were found to significantly enhance new bone formation in full-thickness calvarial defects without inflammatory responses. These results suggest that rGO/HAp NCs can be exploited to craft a range of strategies for the development of novel dental and orthopedic bone grafts to accelerate bone regeneration because these graphene-based composite materials have potentials to stimulate osteogenesis.

Because of its excellent charge carrier mobility at the Dirac point, graphene possesses exceptional properties for high-performance devices. Of particular interest is the potential use of graphene nanoribbons or graphene nanomesh for field-effect transistors. Herein, highly aligned DNA nanowire arrays were crafted by flow-assisted self-assembly of a drop of DNA aqueous solution on a flat polymer substrate. Subsequently, they were exploited as "ink" and transfer-printed on chemical vapor deposited (CVD)-grown graphene substrate. The oriented DNA nanowires served as the lithographic resist for selective removal of graphene, forming highly aligned graphene nanoribbons. Intriguingly, these graphene nanoribbons can be readily produced over a large area (i.e., millimeter scale) with a high degree of feature-size controllability and a low level of defects, rendering the fabrication of flexible two terminal devices and field-effect transistors.

Using the cold crucible melting method, which has been found to be the best technique for the melt preparation of highly refractory materials, melting and discharge experiments for TiO 2 , ZrO 2 and UO 2 /ZrO 2 mixtures were conducted. The cold crucible, 15 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height, was used to get from 3 to 10 kg melts depending on the materials. Volatile gases generated during the melting period were well released through a hole of ∼2 cm in diameter and 10 cm in depth. The rubble crust layer with a gas vent hole, which is stably formed at the top of the melt, contributed to reduce the radiation loss from the melt surface. In reducing the thickness of the bottom crust, a partitioned plug is more effective than a solid plug, resulting in the easy achievement of the melt discharge. The most important factors for successful melting and discharge of refractory materials are the gas release hole and the plug shape. The developed melt discharge method was successfully applied to the fuel coolant interaction experiment using ZrO 2 and UO 2 /ZrO 2 mixtures.

Because of recent research advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology, there has been a growing interest in functional nanomaterials for biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering scaffolds, biosensors, bioimaging agents and drug delivery carriers. Among a great number of promising candidates, graphene and its derivatives—including graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide—have particularly attracted plenty of attention from researchers as novel nanobiomaterials. Graphene and its derivatives, two-dimensional nanomaterials, have been found to have outstanding biocompatibility and biofunctionality as well as exceptional mechanical strength, electrical conductivity and thermal stability. Therefore, tremendous studies have been devoted to employ functional graphene nanomaterials in biomedical applications. Herein, we focus on the biological potentials of functional graphene nanomaterials and summarize some of major literature concerning the multifaceted biomedical applications of functional graphene nanomaterials to coated substrates, patterned arrays and hybrid scaffolds that have been reported in recent years.

The effect of the dimensionality of metallic nanoparticle-and carbon nanotube-based fillers on the mechanical properties of an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) polymer matrix was examined. ABS composite films, reinforced with low dimensional metallic nanoparticles (MNPs, 0-D) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs, 1-D) as nanofillers, were fabricated by a combination of wet phase inversion and hot pressing. The tensile strength and elongation of the ABS composite were increased by 39% and 6%, respectively, by adding a mixture of MNPs and CNTs with a total concentration of 2 wt%. However, the tensile strength and elongation of the ABS composite were found to be significantly increased by 62% and 55%, respectively, upon addition of 3-D heterostructures with a total concentration of 2 wt%. The 3-D heterostructures were composed of multiple CNTs grown radially on the surface of MNP cores, resembling a sea urchin. The mechanical properties of the ABS/3-D heterostructured nanofiller composite films were much improved compared to those of an ABS/mixture of 0-D and 1-D nanofillers composite films at various filler concentrations. This suggests that the 3-D heterostructure of the MNPs and CNTs plays a key role as a strong reinforcing agent in supporting the polymer matrix and simultaneously serves as a discrete force-transfer medium to transfer the loaded tension throughout the polymer matrix.

Sheets of graphene and arrays of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are formed separately using chemical vapor deposition techniques onto different optimized growth substrates. Techniques of transfer printing provide a route to integration, yielding two terminal devices and transistors in which patterned structures of graphene form the electrodes and the SWNTs arrays serve as the semiconducting channels.
