This document is a compilation of abstracts of 28 research papers presented at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The major portion of the reports concerned methods of instruction; nine were related to college mathematics, ten on secondary school mathematics, and two at the elementary school mathematics level. Five reports involved research on learning theories and two dealt with teacher education. (JP)

This is the first issue of a new quarterly series containing expanded abstracts of recent research in mathematics education. (Previous issues were occasional publications of the School Mathematics Study Group.) The twenty abstracts review research articles published in the past two years, and are classified in four sections: (1) Aspects of mathematics learning, (2) Mathematics instruction and instructional materials, (3) Mathematics achievement and its correlates, and (4) Teacher education and evaluation. Each abstract includes an objective indication of the purpose, rationale, research design and procedure, findings, and interpretation of the investigation as originally reported, together with a critical analysis by the abstractor. All abstractors are mathematics educators in professional positions. For ease of reference, each abstract includes the ERIC accession numbers, descriptors, and identifiers of the article. Future issues of this publication will include abstracts of non-journal material available through the ERIC service. (MM)

This is a collection of 20 abstracts of research papers presented at the 50th annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Four papers were presented at each of five research reporting sections: (1) mathematics instruction and instructional materials, (2) aspects of mathematics learning, (3) general research topics in mathematics education, (4) mathematics achievement and its correlates, and (5) teacher education and evaluation. Topics covered include the teaching of division, CAI, feedback, solving open sentences, learning strategies, studying mathematics texts, negations and problem solving, low achievers, addition and subtraction, remedial mathematics in the junior college, inquiry-centered teaching, mastery learning at the elementary level, mathematics teachers' learning strategies, teacher education, videotapes and audiotapes in questioning, and evaluation of elementary school teachers. Expanded abstracts and critical analyses are given for each of 13 research articles. Six articles are concerned with evaluating methods of instruction, four deal with evaluation of student achievement and attitudes, one is concerned with test construction, and three articles investigate patterns of learning and learning hierarchies. This document is a compilation of abstracts of 20 research papers presented at the 51st Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Six reports concern methods of instruction, eight investigate patterns of learning, three deal with evaluation of attitudes, and three reports cover tests and test construction. (DT)

An expanded abstract including statements of purpose, rationale, design and procedure, findings, and interpretations is given for 18 selected research articles. Following each, a short critical analysis is presented by a professional in the field. Among the research topics covered are achievement, attitudes, laboratories, error trends, and learning styles. This quarterly publication has added a new feature beginning with this issue. A listing of all mathematics education research reports that have been included in ERIC publications (RIE and CIJE) the preceding quarter is given to help readers keep abreast of continuing research efforts. Four of the articles are concerned with evaluating methods of instruction, seven deal with evaluation of achievement and attitudes, two present research in teacher education, and the remaining four articles investigate basic patterns of learning.
