Creating a workshop or article on ethics is incredibly difficult. Not only must one assume to follow the ethical road, but must also speak to participants or readers who may not feel the same. Embracing the ethical precepts that frame and color everything done in the library is the mountaintop experience in becoming a librarian. This article will focus on the responsibilities of librarians and the premise of ethics in school librarianship. The author starts by discussing the ethical framework of a profession and providing background on the beginnings of ethics. Furthermore, she proceeds by enumerating the codes of professional ethics and how they apply in library science. In conclusion, the author attempts to provide details on the premise of ethics in school librarianship by citing standards for school library programs, the effect of ethical codes of the American Library Association and the concept of ethics in general.
