Web 2.0 technologies have a great deal to offer while providing information services and can be used as a platform to increase the discoverability of digital collections, engage library patrons in library activities, and create online services that promote collaboration, cooperation, communication, and information sharing among public libraries at various levels in a country. The present study focuses on ICT-enabled information services provided by connemara public library and district central public libraries in Tamil Nadu, India. The study also tries to identify the extent to which Web 2.0 tools are used in public libraries to provide information services. A survey method using a questionnaire was adopted to collect data from connemara public library and selected district central public libraries of Tamil Nadu. Findings of the study show that connemara public library and district central libraries in Tamil Nadu are providing ICT-enabled information services but only a minority of these libraries are using Web 2.0 tools for the same. Analysis found that a minority of district central libraries in Tamil Nadu are using WhatsApp (28.57 %), Facebook (23.81 %), YouTube (14.29 %), Blog (9.52 %), Twitter (9.52 %) and Mobile Apps (4.76 %) to provide information services. Analysis shows that district central public libraries are using Web 2.0 to provide only very basic information to the users. Librarians are not exploiting the full potential of Web 2.0 tools in providing information services. ICT has revolutionized the way we create, share, and promote content. From crowd-sourcing to crowd-funding, ICT has made it easier than ever, including libraries and their users, to share, share, and promote library resources, services, and products. As a result, libraries are in a better position to leverage the power of ICT for the benefit of their resources and services. For centuries, information has played an important role in our lives. Librarians and information centers have always been seen as the custodians of information. However, with the ever-increasing amount of information available in the digital age, it's become increasingly challenging for libraries to provide the right information at the right time. This is where Crowdsourcing comes into play. Nowadays, with more and more catalogs and information being available online, users can perform various activities. For example, they can fine-tune the metadata of records. They can add new subject headers to records that library staff has missed. All of these activities revitalize the existing library services. As libraries continue to grow and add more services, they need an audience that can support them as they do so. With the development of technology and Web 2.0 ideas, Web users are increasingly supporting the concept of openness and knowledge sharing, as well as global collaboration. The concept of crowdsourcing was first introduced by Jeff Howe (2006), as 'the process of taking tasks traditionally performed by an agent and outsourcing them to an indeterminate, mostly large, group of people in the community through an open call.' The purpose of this study is to know the different types of web-based services provided by college libraries in Goa to their users. The study was conducted among the 20 College libraries affiliated with Goa University. A structured online questionnaire method was used to collect the data for the study. The change of internet from Internet Relay Chat to social media has become core part of continuous evolution and interactions of human beings. In this changing universe to be core part, one should be digitally literate and competent to accept and challenge the tasks easily. Web technologies are trending day by day, which aims to enhance social and economic standards and also to attract and contribute in growth and sustainable development. This paper aims to investigate about the actual aspect of digital literacy competency, frequently used databases, use of virtual media application, social media use preference, awareness of plagiarism detection software, web technologies awareness and utilization among library users of Visva-Bharati central library to fulfill their academic performance. Objective: The present study intends to investigate the private university libraries of Assam and their different kinds of library services and reference services, web 2.0 features and its different adopted methodology for the advancement of library services and how these library services are being provided and what are the technical or non-technical measures adopted by the library professional to perceived job performance. It also intends to carry out additional library facilities like an online learning support system and enabling future generations to utilize acquired knowledge from the study libraries. Methodology: For this study, both qualitative and quantitative approaches for data collection have been used. A structured questionnaire was prepared for librarians and the library user’s and sent to the head of the libraries to finds out the status and performance of references services and a questionnaire for each particular library user was also distributed among the categories of library user’s to carry out relevant information regarding user’s demand and perceptions. A personal interview with the librarians of the study libraries and the library users were also conducted for proper measurement. Findings: The study findings show that the adoption of different categories of reference services to facilitate the category of users and online learning support system by the study libraries where basic library services performed by 100% (13 numbers) ADBU, ADTU, MSSV, RGU, and 92% (12 numbers) AKU and 54% (7 numbers) KAV and RGU acquired highest 73% (16 numbers) for reference services and ADTU acquired highest 47% (7 numbers) for web-based reference services. The new, social Web is fun and easy to use. The same cannot usually be said of library Web sites and digital resources. Libraries would benefit from incorporating aspects of the Read/Write Web into their services. Wikis have recently been adopted to support a variety of collaborative activities within libraries. This article and its companion wiki, Library Wikis (http://librarywikis.pbwiki.com/), seek to document the phenomenon of wikis in libraries. This subject is considered within the framework of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW). The author identified thirty-three library wikis and developed a classification schema with four categories: (1) collaboration among libraries (45.7 percent); (2) collaboration among library staff (31.4 percent); (3) collaboration among library staff and patrons (14.3 percent); and (4) collaboration among patrons (8.6 percent). Examples of library wikis are presented within the article, as is a discussion for why wikis are primarily utilized within categories I and II and not within categories III and IV. With the growing recognition of the potentials of web 2.0 tools, a lot of academic libraries are adopting the technologies and investing heavily in training programs for their staff in order to improve their operations. This study investigated the use of web 2.0 tools and services by the library professionals in Lagos State tertiary institution libraries. Review of the literature was carried out on the availability of use, purpose of use, extent of use, and competency level required for the use of web 2.0 tools in tertiary institution libraries in Lagos State, Nigeria. Challenges and solutions were also proffered. The findings revealed that web 2.0 tools have great potentials for library service provision although they are a relatively new concept. The uses of web 2.0 tools were mostly for communication, research, collaboration, and leisure purposes; however, the extent of the use for service delivery was about average. This indicated that web tools were not sufficiently and efficiently used. Findings also revealed that the respondent librarian in the study area possessed a moderate level required skill needed in web-based technology environment. However, there is need to address certain limiting factors, such as technical hitches like unstable internet access, erratic power supply, and restrictive institutional policies, in order to take full advantage of web 2.0 tools for providing innovative library services and drawing patrons to the library. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that library managers in the study area should be provided with uninterrupted electricity power supply to overcome the erratic power situation experienced now, periodic training and re-training programs should be provided to librarians, this in effect will equip librarians with the necessary skill, and policies should be formulated that will guide the conduct and usage of web 2.0 tools for implementation. This paper canvases the relationship between new technology and museums, art galleries and libraries in the context of a so-called participatory culture. It draws on interviews, observations, intercept surveys and ethnographies of a range of cultural institutions in Australasia to examine how the online migration of public space impacts on engagement with these bodies. The aim is to explore the ways in which museums are transforming their practices in response to audiences who are accustomed to the two-way dialogue of Web 2.0 and their smartphones. How museums and their audiences perceive these types of physical and online interactive encounters is both a theme and a tension that balances opportunities for the public to talk back to the institution and each other. As libraries begin to embrace Web 2.0 technologies to serve patrons--ushering in the era of Library 2.0 -- unique dilemmas arise in the realm of information ethics, especially regarding patron privacy. The norms of Web 2.0 promote the open sharing of information--often personal information and the design of many Library 2.0 services capitalize on access to patron information and might require additional tracking, collection, and aggregation of patron activities. Thus, embracing Library 2.0 potentially threatens the traditional ethics of librarianship, where protecting patron privacy and intellectual freedom has been held paramount. The question is not whether libraries will move toward Library 2.0, but how they will do it, and whether they can preserve the contextual integrity of patron privacy and maintain their professional librarian ethic, while also providing enhanced services to their patrons. This article will provide an ethical examination of the emergence of new Library 2.0 tools and technologies in relation to existing ethical norms of information flow within the library context. By doing so, librarians and information professionals will be better situated to avoid--or at least renegotiate -- the impending Faustian bargain regarding patron privacy in the "2.0" era. Overview of the implementation of social web technologies in Spanish university libraries. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the application of podcast in academic and public libraries, focusing on its purposes and characteristic features. It seeks to measure the degree of adoption of podcast in different types of libraries across the continents.Design/methodology/approach – A content analysis method was used for data collection. Convenience sampling method was followed to select four samples of population, one from each of the four continents. Data were collected along the checkpoints developed by Nguyen and Tripathi and Kumar, and subsequently modified by the researcher. Microsoft Excel was used to analyze data.Findings – The analysis revealed that library podcasts have some basic features and are implemented for specific purposes. It also revealed that adoption of podcast varies along the geographical regions. The study found that extension of implementation of podcast is high in North American libraries whereas intension of adoption of podcast is high in Australian libraries. However, the reason of disproportionate use of library podcast may be attributed to the differential internet penetration rate along the regions. The paper also identifies areas where podcast is being effectively used by libraries across the world.Research limitations/implications – The present study was limited to North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, and the survey was completely internet-based, conducted on web sites available in English only. A combination of questionnaire and interview method may enable future researchers to measure the impact of podcast on users' and librarians' attitude and perception, which in turn, will determine the extent to which podcast is capable of motivating and engaging users to harness library facilities.Originality/value – Based on the research findings, the scope of the present study may potentially be expanded with the inclusion of different dimensions to gain a comprehensive understanding on the practicability and usefulness of podcast in different libraries belonging to diverse socio economical levels. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to debate the evolving relationship between libraries and users, and to justify the idea of participatory library and the use of the "participatory library" term. The paper also discusses the development trend of the participatory library and calls for empirical research on this area. Design/methodology/approach – Various sources of literature are collected and examined. Together with the inclusion of personal ideas and experience, a wide range of opinions on the contemporary library is compared and synthesised. Findings – The paper presents changes in the relationship between libraries and users in various periods of library development. It indicates an excessive attention on Library 2.0 while neglecting the participatory nature of the contemporary library. It also suggests that the term "participatory library" should be used as this term reflects the true nature of the contemporary library, and calls for empirical work on participatory library. Discovery interfaces are a very current topics in the field of library services. The expectations of users in this regard are growing due to the progress of Web 2.0. An integration of information resources and advanced services into a unified environment build on top of a federated search engines or a central index becomes necessary. The Xerxes platform developed by David Walker at the California State University meets the high requirements of users and presents an attractive interface. It recently got its first instance in Czech Republic. The assets of Xerxes are especially its openness and extensibility via a portfolio of advanced services. Libraries are offering more services through social media Web sites like Twitter and Facebook, and this presence online is encouraging more conversation between libraries and patrons, including collection development requests. A review of popular Twitter and Facebook library profiles reveals the most successful accounts to be those where the library actively engages its users online. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of information literacy (IL) and digital literacy under the circumstances and challenges of the Web 2.0 environment. Design/methodology/approach – Desk research was done in order acquire a picture about the nature of the Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 in regard to their influence on literacy requirements. The hypothesis that differential literacies have to be offered to diverging groups of users, similarly to traditional library services that cater for different user needs depending on the type of the given library was tested. Findings – Professional goals characterize first of all different groups of professionals, teaching staff and researchers, as well as students. Thus, their need in information is different from that of other categories of users. Consequently, they require literacies similar to services traditionally offered by academic and special libraries. Amateur content is more compatible with the mission of public libraries and it is more suitable for Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 applications. Research limitations/implications – New principles of IL are outlined in this paper which will help practitioners in designing goal-oriented IL education. Institutions, historians and the general public are interested in image collections as objects relating to an historic memory or to current social issues. Collections of images reveal certain traits specific to the Web that construct a scene that is useful to decode and to understand the characteristics of information and the communication associated with the publication of the document and its retrieval. This article uses the concept of Web 2.0 to define the concept of "library 2.0". It suggests that the recent analyses of the evolution of the service offer of libraries are necessarily linked to the knowledge of technologies and to the philosophy underlying the Web 2.0. The article discusses the use of Web 2.0 and social media by libraries. The growth of user-generated content in all information is acknowledged as an uncertain development for library services. Differences in the concepts of information literacy and digital literacy are discussed, particularly the role of production of information in overall digital literacy. It is argued that the primary impact of Web 2.0 on libraries is that it changes the nature of library users themselves by making them more interactive with information rather than passive consumers of information.

Library 2.0 literature has described many of the possibilities Web 2.0 technologies offer to libraries. Case studies have assessed local use, but no studies have measured the Library 2.0 phenomenon by searching public social networking sites. This study used library-specific terms to search public social networking sites, blog search engines, and social bookmarking sites for activity associated with librarians and library users. Blog search data about the recentness of activity or the popularity of a blog post indicate that Library 2.0 technology has many early adopters but provides less evidence of sustained use. The results follow a curve resembling the 80/20 rule and also resemble Chris Anderson's 'long tail' effect, in which very few authors create the vast amount of content. These exploratory results can be used as a starting point for future studies. Librarians who use tags to describe Web-based content might use these findings to select more effective tags. Librarians implementing a blog or a social networking presence might use this study to balance the benefits with the amount of work required to maintain an up-to-date presence. Patrons are comfortable accessing library information and resources online; however, hospital libraries often have difficulties creating and maintaining internal and external library Web sites that are easily accessible by library patrons. Librarians examined the use of a wiki to serve as an appropriate and effective means for providing the library patrons, employees of a large regional health system, access to library resources both on and off campus. This article will briefly discuss the methods the librarians used to choose a wiki client and create the site. Also included will be training tips used and handouts given to the other hospital system librarians to help familiarize themselves with the wiki site and empower them to assume responsibility for the maintenance of their library's page within the wiki. Finally, the article will discuss the overall utilization of the wiki site as well as the barriers encountered and possible reasons why the wiki was not as successful as hoped. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that Web 2.0 provides an exciting set of tools for librarians to help their students become more information-literate. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide an insight into the use of Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 technologies so that librarians can combine open source software with user-generated content to create a richer discovery experience for their users. Design/methodology/approach - Following a description of the current state of integrated library systems (ILS) and the developments with Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 technologies, examples are given of library suppliers and libraries which are making use of these technologies. Findings - Libraries are moving away from the traditional, vendor-sourced library catalogue software in favour of open source software that can be tailored to meet the community's needs by the people who are most familiar with those needs: library staff. Open source products and some vendor products outside the traditional ILS market allow libraries to pool data created by users: tags, reviews, comments. It discusses the areas covered by library marketing, including improvements in the library's image as an organization and libraries as a welcoming place for patrons. It indicates the importance of developing a connection with users. It also explains how circulation can be a viable part of effective marketing. In addition, the article examines the utilization of Web 2.0 technologies by libraries to improve communication with students and library users.

Web 2.0 components and the collaborative and participatory environment associated with their use can help enrich information search, discovery and retrieval systems, gathering the potential knowledge distributed among its users. These components can prove to be a precious asset in promoting Collective Intelligence by knowledge sharing, encouraging the users to evaluate the resources found, so that the next users, when conducting a similar search, first obtain the most relevant results ("Search > Find > Evaluate > Understand> Share" cycle). If one includes in these systems a component of aggregation of sources, records and contents, preferably using intelligent algorithms for retrieval of related information, one can give users a "one stop search" point, rich in content, for being not only an aggregator of multiple sources, but also for its participatory/collaborative component, with possible gains in communities' creation and identification (users with common study or research interests). This article exposes some core concepts for an innovative bibliographic information search system model, where not only the document is the point of reference, but to a new extent, the user himself and all its surrounding. Participants in this plenary session discussed how social networking sites and web 2.0 affect library users libraries, and librarians. The discussion also focused on the transformation of libraries and library services including personalized book search engines being developed by Google and others.
