Surface organic ligands are critical in dictating the structures and properties of atomically precise metal nanoclusters. In contrast to the conventionally used thiolate, phosphine and alkynyl ligands, nitrogen donor ligands have not been used in the protection for well‐defined metal nanoclusters until recently. This review focuses on recent developments in atomically precise metal nanoclusters stabilized by different types of nitrogen donor ligands, in which the synthesis, total structure determination and various properties are covered. We hope that this review will provide insights into the rational design of N donor‐protected metal nanoclusters in terms of structural and functional modulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By directly reducing alkynyl–silver precursors, we successfully obtained a large alkynyl‐protected silver nanocluster, (C7H17ClN)3[Ag112Cl6(C≡CAr)51], which is hitherto the largest structurally characterized silver nanocluster in the alkynyl family. The cluster exhibits four concentric core–shell structures (Ag13@Ag42@Ag48@Ag9), and four types of alkynyl–silver binding modes are observed. Chloride was found to be critical for the stabilization and formation of the silver nanocluster. The release of chloride ions in situ from CH2Cl2 solvent has been confirmed by mass spectrometry. A golden fullerene Au32 cluster has been synthesized with amido and phosphine ligands as the protecting agents. Single‐crystal X‐ray structural analysis revealed that this gold nanocluster, [Au32(Ph3P)8(dpa)6] (SbF6)2 (Hdpa=2,2′‐dipyridylamine), has a stable pseudo‐Ih Au328+ core with S6 symmetry, which features an Au12@Au20 Keplerate cage co‐protected by Ph3P and dpa ligands. Quantum‐chemical studies were conducted to elucidate the origin of the special stability of this cluster, and suggest that it is electronically stabilized through metal–ligand interactions. Two homoleptic alkynyl‐protected gold clusters with compositions of Na[Au25(C≡CAr)18] and (Ph4P)[Au25(C≡CAr)18] (Na⋅1 and Ph4P⋅1, Ar=3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) were synthesized via a direct reduction method. 1 is a magic cluster analogous to [Au25(SR)18]− in terms of electron counts and metal‐to‐ligand ratio. Single‐crystal structure analysis reveals that 1 has an identical Au13 kernel to [Au25(SR)18]−, but adopts a distinctly different arrangement of the six peripheral dimer staple motifs. The steric hindrance of alkynyl ligands is responsible for the D3 arrangement of Au25. The introduction of alkynyl also significantly changes the optical absorption features of the nanocluster as supported by DFT calculations. This magic cluster confirms that there is a similar but quite different parallel alkynyl‐protected metal cluster universe in comparison to the thiolated one. Magic clusters Na[Au25(C≡CAr)18] and (Ph4P)[Au25(C≡CAr)18] (Ar=3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) exhibit novel connection between staples and the Au13 core. Abstract: Total structure determination of a ligand‐protected gold nanocluster, Au144, has been successfully carried out. The composition of title nanocluster is Au144(C≡CAr)60 (1; Ar=2‐FC6H4‐). The cluster 1 exhibits a quasi‐spherical Russian doll‐like architecture, comprising a Au54 two‐shelled Mackay icosahedron (Au12@Au42), which is further enclosed by a Au60 anti‐Mackay icosahedral shell. The Au114 kernel is enwrapped by thirty linear ArC≡C‐Au‐C≡CAr staple motifs. The absorption spectrum of 1 shows two bands at 560 and 620 nm. This spectrum is distinctly different from that of thiolated Au144, which was predicted to have an almost identical metal kernel and very similar ligands arrangement in 1. These facts indicate the molecule‐like behavior of 1 and significant involvement of ligands in the electronic structure of 1. The cluster 1 is hitherto the largest coinage metal nanocluster with atomically precise molecular structure in the alkynyl family. The work not only addresses the concern of structural information of Au144, which had been long‐pursued, but also provides an interesting example showing ligand effects on the optical properties of ligand protected metal nanoclusters. Intensely luminescent coinage metal cluster [Au12Ag14(C≡CPh)20(mdppz)4(CH3OH)8](BF4)6 { 1, mdppz = 2-(3-methylpyrazinyl)diphenylphosphine} was synthesized and structurally characterized. Twenty alkynyl ligands (PhC≡C-), four mdppz ligands, and eight methanol molecules were found to co-stabilize the metal cluster. Interestingly, when the weakly ligated methanol molecules were removed, the green luminescence of 1 significantly redshifted to yellow; exposing the resulting yellow sample in methanol vapor immediately restores the green luminescence. Thus reversible luminescence response can be observed by removing and restoring methanol. Other small solvent molecules with weak coordination ability such as Me2CO, MeCN, and C2H5OH were also found to be good agents to trigger the vapochromism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the first time total structure determination of homoleptic alkynyl-protected gold nanoclusters is reported. The nanoclusters are synthesized by direct reduction of PhC≡CAu, to give Au44(PhC≡C)28 and Au36(PhC≡C)24. The Au44 and Au36 nanoclusters have fcc-type Au36 and Au28 kernels, respectively, as well as surrounding PhC≡C-Au-C2(Ph)Au-C≡CPh dimeric 'staples' and simple PhC≡C bridges. The structures of Au44(PhC≡C)28 and Au36(PhC≡C)24 are similar to Au44(SR)28 and Au36(SR)24, but the UV/Vis spectra are different. The protecting ligands influence the electronic structures of nanoclusters significantly. The synthesis of these two alkynyl-protected gold nanoclusters indicates that a series of gold nanoclusters in the general formula Au x(RC≡C) y as counterparts to Au x(SR) y can be expected. An intensely luminescent gold(I)-silver(I) cluster [(C)(AuPPhpy2)6Ag6(CF3CO2)3](BF4)5 (PPhpy2=bis(2-pyridyl)phenylphosphine) ( 3) is synthesized by the reaction of [(C)(AuPPhpy2)6Ag4](BF4)6 with AgCF3CO2. All eight faces of the octahedral C@Au6 core in 3 are capped, that is, six faces are capped by silver ions and two by tetrafluoroborates. Cluster 3 is intensely luminescent in solution with a quantum yield of 92 %. Ligation of CF3CO2− ions is vital for the construction and emission properties of 3, as confirmed by DFT calculations. BF4− ions are involved in the protecting sphere of the metal core, as evidenced by 19F NMR data. The participation of phosphines, CF3CO2−, and BF4− ions in the protection of the emissive core and the enhancement of the rigidity of the cluster result in the high emission efficiency. A red-near-IR dual-emissive nanocluster with the composition [Au10Ag2(2-py−C≡C)3(dppy)6](BF4)5 ( 1; 2-py−C≡C is 2-pyridylethynyl, dppy=2-pyridyldiphenylphosphine) has been synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis reveals that 1 has a trigonal bipyramidal Au10Ag2 core that contains a planar Au4(2-py−C≡C)3 unit sandwiched by two Au3Ag(dppy)3 motifs. Cluster 1 shows intense red-NIR dual emission in solution. The visible emission originates from metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) from silver atoms to phosphine ligands in the Au3Ag(dppy)3 motifs, and the intense NIR emission is associated with the participation of 2-pyridylethynyl in the frontier orbitals of the cluster, which is confirmed by a time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculation. A convenient method for the synthesis of silver alkynyl compounds containing different nuclearities has been developed. The reaction of AgC≡CBut and AgX (X = CF3CO2−, C2F5CO2−) in the presence of auxiliary ligands L (L = bipyridine, bipy; 1,10-phenanthroline, phen; 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine, dppy) under different conditions afforded a family of new silver alkynyl compounds, namely, [Ag3(bipy)(C≡CBut)(CF3CO2)2]n (1), [Ag4(bipy)2(C≡CBut)(CF3CO2)3]n (2), [Ag6(phen)3(C≡CBut)2(C2F5CO2)4(MeOH)(EtOH)] (3), [Ag8L4(C≡CBut)2(C2F5CO2)6] (L = bipy, 4; L = phen, 5), [Ag10(dppy)2(C≡CBut)6X4] (X = CF3CO2−, 6; X = C2F5CO2−, 7), [Ag12(bipy)2(C≡CBut)8(C2F5CO2)4] (8) and [Ag12(phen)4(C≡CBut)6(CF3CO2)6]·2EtOH (9). Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that compounds 1 and 2 display infinite-chain structures, while the other seven compounds are discrete molecules containing silver nuclearities varying from 6 to 12. The chirality of a gold nanocluster can be generated from either an intrinsically chiral inorganic core or an achiral inorganic core in a chiral environment. The first structural determination of a gold nanocluster containing an intrinsic chiral inorganic core is reported. The chiral gold nanocluster [Au20(PP3)4]Cl4 (PP3=tris(2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyl)phosphine) has been prepared by the reduction of a gold(I)-tetraphosphine precursor in dichloromethane solution. Single-crystal structural determination reveals that the cluster molecular structure has C3 symmetry. It consists of a Au20 core consolidated by four peripheral tetraphosphines. The Au20 core can be viewed as the combination of an icosahedral Au13 and a helical Y-shaped Au7 motif. The identity of this Au20 cluster is confirmed by ESI-MS. A novel Pt(II) terpyridine complex that has a nicotinamide moiety linked to the terpyridyl ligand has been synthesized in good yield and studied structurally and spectroscopically. The complex, [Pt(Nttpy)-Cl](PF6)2 where Nttpy = 4'-(p-nicotinamide-N-methylphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, is observed to be brightly luminescent in the solid state at room temperature and at 77 K. The complex exhibits reversible vapochromic behavior and crystallographic change in the presence of several volatile organic solvents. Upon exposure to methanol vapors, the complex changes color from red to orange, and a shift to higher energy is observed in the emission maximum with an increase in excited-state lifetime and emission intensity. The crystal and molecular structures of the orange and red forms, determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction on the same single crystal, were found to be equivalent in the molecular sense and only modestly different in terms of packing. In both forms, the cationic Pt(II) complexes possess distorted square planar geometries. Analysis of the orange form's crystal packing reveals the presence of solvent molecules in lattice voids, Pt…Pt separations averaging 3.75 Å and a zigzag arrangement between nearest neighbor Pt atoms, whereas the red form is devoid of solvent within the crystal lattice and contains complexes stacked with a nearly linear arrangement of Pt(II) ions having an average distance of 3.33 Å. On the basis of the crystallographic data, it is evident that sorption of methanol vapor induces a change in intermolecular contacts and Pt…Pt interactions in going from red to orange. Disruption of the d8-d8 metallophilic interactions consequently alters the emitting state from ³[(d)σ*--π*(terpyridine)] that is formally a metal--metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) state in the red form to one in which the HOMO corresponds to a more localized Pt(d) orbital in the red form (³MLCT). Methanol drives the blue emissive complex, [Cu2(dppy)3(MeCN)](BF4)2(dppy = diphenylphosphino-pyridine), with a head-to-tail arrangement of the three bridging phosphine ligands to convert to its linkage isomer (head-to-head, green emissive) in the solid state, and the transformation could be reversibly realized through recrystallization in different solvents. Small anions play a big role in the preparation of an intensely luminescent gold(I)–silver(I) cluster. In their Communication on page 7117 ff. Q.‐M. Wang and co‐workers show that the stepwise addition of silver ions to the gold‐cluster precursor enhances the rigidity of the cluster. Abstract: Three heterometallic coordination polymers have been prepared by reacting tripodal metalloligand AlL3 (L=3-(4-pyridyl)acetylacetonate) with MCl2 (M=ZnII, CdII and HgII). The coordination preferences of the metal ions are found to have pronounced effects on the structural topologies. X-ray crystal structural analyses reveal that the complexes display three different kinds of structures. Complex 1 has a distorted ladder-like one-dimensional structure; 2 is a 2D layered structure consisting of rectangular moieties; 3 adopts a helical arrangement. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A large family of crystalline compounds with silver acetylenediide (Ag2C2) as a component have been synthesized and characterized. In most cases the C2 2− species is enclosed in a silver(I) polyhedron of 6–10 vertices, which may be symbolized as C2@Ag n (n =6–10). In the present review, emphasis is laid on our systematic studies in the controlled generation and supramolecular assembly of C2@Ag n polyhedra to form discrete molecules and higher-dimensional aggregates with the aid of co-existing anions and ancillary ligands. Atomically precise gold nanoclusters are ideal model catalysts with well-defined compositions and tunable structures. Determination of the ligand effect on catalysis requires the use of gold nanoclusters with protecting ligands as the only variable. Two isostructural Au38 nanoclusters, [Au38(L)20(Ph3P)4]2+ (L = alkynyl or thiolate), have been synthesized by a direct reduction method, and they have an unprecedented face-centered cubic (fcc)-type Au34 kernel surrounded by 4 AuL2 staple motifs, 4 Ph3P, and 12 bridging L ligands. The Au34 kernel can be derived from the fusion of two fcc-type Au20 via sharing a Au6 face. Catalytic performance was studied with these two nanoclusters supported on TiO2 (1/TiO2 and 2/TiO2) as catalysts. The alkynyl-protected Au38 are very active (>97%) in the semihydrogenation of alkynes (including terminal and internal ones) to alkenes, whereas the thiolated Au38 showed a very low conversion (<2%). This fact suggests that the protecting ligands play an important role in H2 activation.
