Euphemism is a linguistic phenomenon and a form of polite speech that clearly reflects the cultural and ethical behavior among members of a social community. In communication, speakers choose appropriate words and expressions based on the context, purpose, and content of their message to avoid discomfort for themselves and their interlocutors. The existence of euphemisms and the reasons for their formation are universal features across languages. This article examines Russian euphemisms and compares them with Vietnamese ones to enhance the teaching of Russian language, focusing on the thinking, cognition, and communication culture of Russian and Vietnamese people. The study presents, the theoretical basis for comparing linguistic and cultural characteristics of euphemisms in Russian and Vietnamese; and It also proposes several practical measures to improve the quality of Russian language teaching and learning. The relevance of the study is determined by the importance of studying the phraseological systems of a particular language through the prism of national and cultural code of ethnicity, a value-based approach to the linguistic and communicative paradigm on the example of the Kazakh, Russian and English languages, the creation of national speech universals, identifying the area of their functioning and understanding of phraseological structures by native and non-native speakers of the language. The purpose of the study is an in-depth analysis of national, and cultural characteristics through the verbalisation of thought processes displayed in a diachronic language section. The main method of investigation is theoretical, involving the collection and study of a wide range of scientific literature on the stated topic, the identification of the main national elements through the study of the lexical-structural realisation of the value priorities of the people at the level of speech behaviour. The study addresses the unique transmission of folk wisdom by intralingual and extralingual means, the verbalisation of a nation's thought activity and its results, different aspects of the study of these issues in world science for a complete language picture of a particular nation, the basic similarities, and differences in the mechanisms of operation of different language systems are analysed in detail. The materials presented in the study can be used in further phraseological studies on the moral values of the nation on the example of linguistic culture, the creation of linguistic studies on the influence of verbal and non-verbal factors on the development of people, to study the structural, semantic, stylistic characteristics of speech behaviour, to turn scientific interests into anthropocentric trends, to record and categorise the connotations of stable units and their speech equivalents in dictionaries, textbooks, scientific studies. The article examines the distinctions of the Russian language used by Ukrainians living in Poland. The study is based on the analysis of Facebook groups in the Polish segment, where both private and commercial messages are posted. The article presents the findings of an analysis of language insertions from the Polish language and other linguistic features of messages in online groups, specifically focusing on the use of toponyms and elements of speech etiquette of the Russian language. Additionally, data on the dynamics of changes in the number of group members and the frequency of Russian and Ukrainian language use in these groups from January to September 2022 are presented. It is known that the words with the letters "f" and "x" used in the Kazakh language originated from Arabic and Persian and are found in European words that entered through the Russian language. Of the article is to discuss the basics of translating the letters "f" and "x" into the Kazakh alphabet. The use of religious and European words in normative dictionaries, with the letters "f" and "x" and entered into the language through the Russian language, is analysed on the basis of the methods of linguistics and statistical analysis. The specifics of these letters in religious discourse and their use in onomastics will be determined. The reasons for the inclusion of the letters "f" and "x" in the improved new alphabet are mentioned. Investigating how the Kazakh language adopts and modifies foreign sounds can contribute to a broader understanding of linguistic adaptation. This paper explores how students build narrative in collaborative reading processes using the picture book Wazn Teez? (Ellis 2017) to construct the narrative in collaborative reading processes. The article presents the analysis of the changes, which have occurred in the linguistic and cultural public consciousness of the Ukrainians since the Russian invasion into Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The research was conducted based on the results of online survey involving respondents from the educational and cultural spheres (teachers, lecturers, museum and library workers, theatrical and literary workers). The choice of this target group was based on the assumption that this professional group is the most sensitive to any changes in the sphere we aim to study. People employed in culture and education are capable of self-reflection, and, in accordance with their professional functions, they have an obvious intellectual, moral, and ethical influence on society, thus bearing the responsibility for the situation and broadcasting their position and attitude to the linguistic situation and culture. According to the results of the survey, many bilingual informants refuse to use Russian, and Russian-speaking Ukrainians attempt to start speaking Ukrainian by studying it independently or taking courses. The analysis showed that Cancelled Russian culture is a phenomenon relevant not only for virtual space. Negative attitudes towards Russia are transferred to classical Russian literature, to Russian-language music content, and, to a lesser extent, to modern fiction. At the same time, a third of the respondents directly or indirectly approve of the use of taboo (swear) words and expressions in public space. According to the norms of the contemporary Russian standard language, the covert first argument of the adverbial participle (AP) has to be co-referential with the first argument of its matrix verb. However, other co-reference choices are a frequent phenomenon, as numerous publications both descriptive (Rappaport 1984; Jokojama 1984) and prescriptive (Ickovič 1982; Glovinskaja 2000) testify. Since the reasons for these divergent co-reference choices have been insufficiently addressed so far, we conducted an experiment that tested the influence of linguistic and sociodemographic factors on the co-reference choices. The linguistic factors tested are sentence semantics, argument structure of the verb and linear syntactic order of adverbial participle and matrix clause. Since the adverbial participle has been subject to an intensive normativization process, we assume that the degree of the respondents' familiarity with prescriptive language rules and the degree of their exposition to texts reflecting these rules influence respondents' co-reference choices. Therefore, we also tested for sociodemographic factors reflecting these degrees, namely the status of Russian as primary or secondary language, age, gender and highest level of education attained. Our data suggest a contrast between actual language use, in which the co-referential ambiguity of APs is resolved by verb and sentence semantics and the syntactic position of the AP, and the normative rules of Russian grammaticography, which allow only for co-reference with the first argument of the matrix clause. Long-lasting exposure to highly normatized text registers show effect, as respondents with master's degree or even higher levels of education significantly prefer co-reference with the first argument of the matrix clause even in ambiguous contexts. The paper is structured as follows: The first section gives a survey of the divergent co-reference choices discussed in the literature and identifies linguistic factors hypothesized to influence a speaker's choice. Section 2 discusses possible sociolinguistic factors affecting the co-reference choice. How these two types of factors are considered in the design of our experiment as well as participant sampling is described in section 3. This paper discusses one approach to investigating the concept of racism and related concepts in the linguistic image of the world of Russian language users. It focuses on the collection of data (associative experiments) and its psycholinguistic interpretation as well as on the theories behind the experiments, including the theory of linguistic consciousness (teorija jazykovogo soznanija). The study outcomes suggest that Russian language users condemn racism but express this condemnation in a culturally specific way, which might lead to significant misunderstandings and conflicts in the international context. This article contributes to Construction Grammar, historical linguistics, and Russian linguistics through an in-depth corpus study of predicate agreement in constructions with quantified subjects. Statistical analysis of approximately 39,000 corpus examples indicates that these constructions constitute a network of constructions ("allostructions") with various preferences for singular or plural agreement. Factors pull in different directions, and we observe a relatively stable situation in the face of variation. We present an analysis of a multidimensional network of allostructions in Russian, thus contributing to our understanding of allostructional relationships in Construction Grammar. With regard to historical linguistics, language stability is an understudied field. We illustrate an interplay of divergent factors that apparently resists language change. The syntax of numerals and other quantifiers represents a notoriously complex phenomenon of the Russian language. The present research combines three fields of inquiry in sign language linguistics: verbal agreement, person features, and syntactic complexity. These topics have previously been addressed in isolation, but little is known about their interaction. This study attempts to fill this gap by investigating subject agreement in complement clauses in Russian Sign Language. By means of corpus investigation and grammaticality judgments, I found that subject agreement in clausal complements of the control predicates try, love, want, begin, and modal can may be deficient – in particular, it can be reduced to the forms identical to first-person marking even in the case of a third-person subject controller. Deficient subject agreement in complement clauses is thus reminiscent of non-finite verbal forms in spoken languages. I further argue that the choice of first-person forms in deficient agreement reveals a default status of first person in sign languages, which is consistent with proposals regarding the modality-specific properties of first-person reference in these languages. The study of the spread of the Russian language outside of Russia over the past years has attracted the attention of researchers from different countries and is one of the important objects of sociological research. Russian language went into a decline during the 1990s when Central Asian Republics (CARs) simultaneously embarked on the process of nation and state building along with economic transition. The CARs desired to diversify their political and economic relations and to lessen their dependence on Russian Federation during their early transition period. Due to its own economic and political problems associated with its transition, Russia could not pay full attention to its former Soviet states during the immediate post- Soviet period. However, due to the Tsarist and particularly Soviet legacies, the economic connectivity and interdependence of former Soviet states on Russian Federation proved long lasting. The revival of Russian language in former Soviet Central Asian Republics is mainly due to the theory of Economics of Language which explores mutual effects of language and economic variables. It says that fluency and command over a dominant language i.e., a language of science and technology and trade provides more dividends. The CARs are still heavily dependent on trade and remittances of their nationals working in Russia. A large number of workers from the countries of Central Asia work in the Russian Federation. Their remittances contribute immensely to the Gross Domestic Product (GDPs) of these countries. The CARs re-started promoting Russian language in their countries due to a significant role of this language in their economies and economic relations with Russia. Since 2000, the Russian economic revival has naturally strengthened its political and economic role in the former Soviet space which also includes Central Asia. This article is investigating speech parts and adverbial lexemes study in Turkic linguistics. Most linguists divide the parts of speech into significant and auxiliary in full accordance with the tradition of Russian linguistics. Official words are defined as having predominantly grammatical functions, characterized by the absence of direct subject correlation, reduced phonetically. Official words classification is also applicable for syntactic criterion. Categorical, grammatical meanings exist based on word lexical meaning, where semantic feature is the leading part. Morphological features present in the English language are not all parts of speech, considering the syntactic function features. Linguistic complexity serves as an important measure of second language (L2) writing development. Complexity indices, however, rarely feature in the studies of learner languages other than English. Additionally, L2 writing studies have been criticized for the lack of consistency in defining proficiency. The current study addresses these gaps by exploring writing development in a less commonly studied language (i.e., Russian) while paying attention to the operationalization of proficiency. We analyzed lexical and syntactic complexity indices in a corpus of essays written by learners at different levels at the beginning and the end of an instructional program. Our analyses demonstrate that 9 complexity indices (i.e., mean word length, type–token ratio, percentage of high‐frequency words, mean sentence length, clauses per sentence, syntactic depth, proportion of subordinate clauses, and proportion of relative clauses) changed significantly over the course of the program; the same 9 indices showed significant correlation with the initial curricular placement, and all—with the exception of clauses per sentence—modestly or highly correlated with the final rating on the proficiency test. This paper investigates a monolingual approach to the teaching of linguistic minority pupils in an English primary school at Key Stage Two (7–11 years old). The work is based on a longitudinal case study of one Russian-speaking migrant pupil and her schooled experience. The analysis and discussion explicate the prohibition of the first or home language (Russian) in the school, and reveal how denying a seven-year-old migrant child permission to use her L1 is detrimental to her learning experience and her well-being. The focal data derive from participant-observation fieldnotes, visual artefacts and interviews with the child, her mother, and a class teacher over a 7-month period. Through an analysis of the participants' stancetaking, we show how the pupil's voice is inaudible in her struggle against a monolingual attitude towards her bilingualism and multicompetence. Our contribution therefore builds on work in critical migrant language education, to identify the importance of enabling the presence of the L1 in learning for migrant pupils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the role of cross-linguistic transfer versus general processing strategy in two groups of heritage speakers (n = 28 per group) with the same heritage language – Russian – and typologically different dominant languages: English and Estonian. A group of homeland Russian speakers (n = 36) is tested to provide baseline comparison. Within the framework of the Competition model (MacWhinney, 2012), cross-linguistic transfer is defined as reliance on the processing cue prevalent in the heritage speaker's dominant language (e.g. word order in English) for comprehension of heritage language. In accordance with the Isomorphic Mapping Hypothesis (O'Grady and Lee, 2005), the general processing strategy is defined in terms of isomorphism as a linear alignment between the order of the sentence constituents and the temporal sequence of events. Participants were asked to match pictures on the computer screen with auditorily presented sentences. Sentences included locative or instrumental constructions, in which two cues – word order (basic vs. inverted) and isomorphism mapping (isomorphic vs. nonisomorphic) – were fully crossed. The results revealed that (1) Russian native speakers are sensitive to isomorphism in sentence processing; (2) English-dominant heritage speakers experience dominant language transfer, as evidenced by their reliance primarily on the word order cue; (3) Estonian-dominant heritage speakers do not show significant effects of isomorphism or word order but experience significant processing costs in all conditions. The problem of lexical borrowing occupies one of the main places in linguistics, since the borrowing of foreign words is one of the ways to replenish the vocabulary of the language of any people. The reasons for borrowing are very diverse: this is the need to nominate new items, and some cultural superiority of the German nation in certain areas of activity, and the presence of bilingualism, and the spread of fashion for German. But the main reason should be considered the historical ties between the Russian and German peoples, since in the process of their relationship the need for borrowing was revealed. True, the etymological analysis of this vocabulary suggests that in most cases these are not native words in German, so we consider it appropriate, considering borrowings from German in Russian, to single out purely German words (group A), German words that came into Russian language through an intermediary language (group B), words that appeared in Russian from German, but are ultimately traced back to other languages (group C), and words that were influenced by two or more intermediary languages, one of which was German (group D). The present study analyzes the influence of the political environment on language with a focus on how people address strangers in the country. The study is important to assess how the political environment plays a role in influencing changes in expression and conditions of language. The significance and rationale of the study are provided in detail, explaining the purpose and objectives behind the investigation. Similarly, a comprehensive literature review focuses on the language and its significance, linguistics, a historical view of the Russian language, and Russia's political environment. Previous literature associating politics with the evolution of language in Russia and the impact of political changes on the language are discussed in the paper. The study adopted a pragmatist philosophy with a qualitative method to conduct an in-depth analysis of the research phenomenon. A review-based design was adopted, and secondary data sources were used for data collection. The results revealed that language has undergone various changes due history of political changes in the country and Russian became the means of communication in the country. Solzhenitsyn's formulation used in the title of the archaic lexis dictionary (Dictionary of the Russian Language Extension) contained the idea: “Archaisms very often do not deserve "premature death" and should be used in order to protect the Russian language from the harmful average standard”. Solzhenitsyn's idea is believed not to be developed and followed. Meanwhile, the analysis of modern media shows that the best texts invariably include units not from central common lexis. Nowadays archaization and dearchaization of lexis are natural and active language processes. A characteristic feature of the Russian language development at the turn of the XXXXI centuries is fairly considered to be the archaization of lexis that is objectively "chronologically stable". The article is devoted to the analysis of functions of archaic lexis in the media discourse from the point of view of modern linguistic ecology ideas. Archaisms are necessary for the modern language to nuance the thought, they are necessary as an opportunity to create a pathos media text, as a tropeic means with the widest range. The article analyzes and compares the linguocultural fields of svoë-mir-lad-pokoj-ujutdom-stroj-celovek-svoboda-porjadocnoe-teplota and cužoe-prostor-razdol'e-volja-ljudin-cužezemec-udal'-razgul-holod in Russian, and world(in its physical conception of the whole of all things)-peace-humanity-own-convenient-harmony-agreement-house-hearth-fire-warmth and world(in its negative theological conception, and its derivatives as mundanear)-filth (filthy)-alien-strange-will-foreigner in Spanish. Based on methods and concepts of linguoculturology such as the cultureme, the linguocultureme, the linguoconcept and the theory of linguocultural fields, the objective of this study is to know in depth the origin, interrelationship and cultural connotations of the analyzed linguoconcepts. The most remarkable result of the study is to verify that between these linguoconcepts of both languages there is a complex and non-univocal correlation of equivalences and differences. Much crosslinguistic acquisition research explores finiteness marking in typical development and Specific Language Impairment (SLI). Research into Russian, however, has focused on typical acquisition, not SLI. This article presents a first attempt to investigate finiteness marking in monolingual Russian-speaking children with SLI. We test two competing hypotheses: the Extended Optional Infinitive (EOI) hypothesis and the morphological richness account. The former predicts a large proportion of non-finite forms in the speech of children with SLI crosslinguistically. Due to the rich morphological verbal system of Russian, the latter hypothesis predicts that finiteness marking in Russian SLI will be relatively unimpeded, except for 'near-miss' errors. To test these predictions, we analyzed picture-story narrative samples collected from 67 monolingual Russian-acquiring children aged 4;1 to 4;11. All samples are part of the BiSLI corpus created by Tribushinina and colleagues and publicly available through the CHILDES project. We found that, similar to both aged-matched typically developing (TD) controls (N = 24) and younger TD children (N = 23), children with SLI (N = 20) are essentially adultlike in terms of finiteness marking of verbal forms in the matrix clause. The handful of errors observed in the SLI sample involved substitutions in only one inflectional category. These findings provide support for the morphological richness hypothesis over the EOI model of Russian SLI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the paper is to indicate and analyze the types of semantic distinctions between synonymous adjectives in Uzbek, Russian and English, thus determine features common for the three non-related languages. Based on the broad review of the theoretical data it is stated in the paper that a synonymic row represents a specific type of word relations based on the sameness/similarity of meaning and distinction. The distinctions which bear semantic, expressive and stylistic nuances, that serve to preserve gradation inside a synonymic row, are called shades of meaning. The comparative analysis of the examined data let us identify types of semantic distinctions in gradation, motivating circumstances, duration and frequency, nature of outward expression of the quality, range of described objects, semantic associations, evaluative attitude, logical emphasis, emotional colouring. We believe the paper findings may be useful for researchers who deal with contrastive linguistics, typology of nonrelated languages, lexicographic practice and may help those who study the English language to solve the difficulty of choosing the appropriate word in the communication discourse. The divergent positions of Nikolai Ivanovich Ilminsky (1822-1891) and Ismail Bey Gasprinskii (1851-1914) on education, provide the starting point for a reflection on the complex linguistic question in reference to the non-Russian communities of the Empire that took place at the end of the 19th century. Through the content of the social and literary activity of Ismail Bey Gasprinskii, I intend to deepen the point of view of the Crimean Tatar enlightener on the importance of the language of instruction in the inorodcy's (aliens) school, a tool necessary to counteract cultural and political isolation of Russian Muslims, to encourage the sblizhenie (rapprochement) between the Russians and Tatars. The socio-political implications of the linguistic question allow us to go beyond its borders, to reflect on the vopros ob inorodcach (question about aliens) and the current samobytnos (self-being) in connection with the issue of identities in multicultural Russia. The real research is devoted to the complex analysis of the set expressions with the meaning of mental abilities of the woman in two languages. The lexico-semantic microsystems and their ingredients are exposed to the detailed research. The work is done on the example of phraseological units, paremias (proverbs and sayings) and aphorisms of two structurally-different languages. The scope of the study is on a joint of the major disciplines of modern linguistic science which include ethnolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, lingvoculturology, and considers the verbalized ideas of the intellectual level of female persons in set expressions in the Russian and English linguistic picture of the world. The study opens new data which can be useful both at an explanation of language identities, and at the solution of some difficulties of the translation. The scientific novelty of the research is caused by the complex system analysis to which these expressions are exposed for the first time. It is necessary to discuss the questions connected with the verbalization of the concepts showing female intelligence, fresh interest of various branches of sciences both in the identity of the person in general and to such a narrow direction as the female intelligence exactly, changing of the woman’s role in the modern society.
