This study is part of a research carried out between 1994 and 1996 on the Sacred Convent of Assisi. On this occasion, he was able to consult the manuscripts of Father Ilario Altobelli OFMConv (1560-1637) in the archive of the Irish Friars Minor of St. Isidore. The essay, divided into two parts, presents the description of the Basilica of San Francesco and the Sacred Convent of Assisi contained in a work by Fr. Altobelli, "Seraphic Genealogy". Part I outlines, in a short note, his biography and an analysis, summarizing code 2/30, of the Work. Part II contains the description of the Assisi complex and some reflections on research topics, which are still open. Finally, a section of images illustrates some sheets of the manuscript and the planimetric drawings of churches and convents contained in codex 2/30. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The most ancient Vitae Horatii are four: the one attributed to Svetonius, the biography contained in the commentary of Porphyrio and the two Vitae transmitted from the manuscripts of the Pseudacronian scholia. The reconstruction of the diffusion of the Vitae in the manuscript tradition and the comparison of their content allow to identify the relationships between them. Secondly, the work focuses on the two Pseudacronian Vitae, in order to establish whether they are an integral part of these scholia; furthermore, the first Vita seems to be an accessus to Horace.

The article focuses on the six historical sources listed by Morante at the end of La Storia. A novel (1974). The exploration of the author’s archives (the manuscripts of the novel along with the books with her annotations which she used for writing it) provides a valuable perpective for studying the narrative stragegies set forth by Morante to insert History into her novel. Based on this analysis, a reflection on Morante’s “philosophy of history” will be proposed, in order to explain why she decided to “fictionalize” History and to “historicize” her novel.

The essay aims to reconstruct the history of Manzoni’s Versi improvvisati sopra il nome di Maria through new documents and new witnesses. This short poem was first published by Ruggiero Bonghi in 1883 according to a copy that belonged to Gaetano Giudici. In 1922 Michele Scherillo provided a new edition with variants, on the basis of a new copy that was considered lost until now. The text given by Scherillo was accepted by Ghisalberti in 1957, therefore by all later publishers. Today, the manuscript that belonged to Scherillo has been found. It casts serious doubts on the publisher’s behavior, therefore on the most widespread form of the text., Il contributo ricostruisce la storia dei manzoniani Versi improvvisati sopra il nome di Maria alla luce di nuove testimonianze.

The paper focuses on the pre-text of Vittorio Alfieri’s Rime and analyzes the rubrics, journal-type notes and meta-notes (aimed at contextualize or comment the poems) in order to explore the role given by the author to his draft manuscripts. While Alfieri’s collection of poems has usually been considered as a sort of personal diary in which he made a literary transfiguration of event-based contents, we will show how Alfieri tends to use his manuscripts to seal his literary self-portrait to his biographical self., Il contributo si concentra sull’avantesto delle Rime di Vittorio Alfieri e analizza le didascalie, le note di carattere diaristico, e le metapostille (di contestualizzazione o di commento) per esplorare la funzione attribuita dall’autore ai suoi manoscritti di lavoro.

CHRISTIAN monasticism & religious orders ,BYZANTINE Empire ,FEMININE identity - Abstract
By highlighting the spiritual contribution that women could develop and express within their monasteries, the present essay attempts to redress the balance of an overall negative judgement of women monasteries as restricting institutions. According to historical data, monasteries were acting more like prisons to passive victims, than (sometimes last-resort) opportunities when other alternatives in life might have actually turned out even more restrictive and limiting to these women. Though in itself not a consolation, figures such as Irene of Chrysobalanton and Kassia emerge as ambassadors of such freedom that could be gained by women within monastic institutions. The contribution of women to their own spiritual guidance, as well as that of other laymen, and to the liturgical life of the church appear as outstanding achievements even against the background of the political function of monasteries as enforced places of penance for aristocratic women in disgrace. 23.

It is traditional to speak of the narrativity of an image, as soon as it transposes a narrative, or if it includes elements of temporality. This article proposes to widen the area of competence and the prerogatives of the image: the image would not be only “narrative” but “narrator”. It is indeed able to take in charge all the functions of the narrator as Genette describes them in Figures III. This theoretical proposition is demonstrated by means of a manuscript of Mélusine de Coudrette (BnF fr. 24383). The image can take on the five functions of the narrator according to Genette; six in reality, because we note the necessary dissociation of the explanatory and ideological functions. The miniatures do not only “tell” a story (narrative function), they participate in the organization of the narrative and the temporality of the events (function of management), establish a link with the reader (function of communication), provide explanations (explanatory function), support the ideological purpose of the text (ideological function), transmit an emotion (testimonial function). This reflection makes it possible to account for the role of images in the arrangement of the text within the manuscript and to reverse the role of text-image subordination, while opening perspectives on the narrative function of images in other media.

This paper draws attention to some features of the manuscript tradition of Livy’s account about the movement of the Roman troops under the command of Gnaeus Manlius Vulso from the Thracian Chersonese towards the Hebrus River. A strict adherence to the manuscripts is proposed and several widely accepted adjustments are questioned. Presented are some doubts in the reading of Gypseia as Cypsela. It is suggested a relation between the Thracians Corneli(i) and the Scipiones. Emphasized is the incorrect replacement of the phrase “templum Mendidium”, attested in all of the available codices, with “templum Bendidium” by the modern scholars and are presented arguments for a connection of that temple with the Ionian settlement of Mende, which is mentioned by some ancient authors in the downstream area of Hebrus River, not far from Aenos., Questo articolo richiama l’attenzione su alcune caratteristiche della tradizione manoscritta del racconto di Livio sul movimento delle truppe romane sotto il comando di Gneo Manlio Vulso dal Chersoneso Tracico verso il fiume Ebro.

Mariologia. Manoscritti. Vergine Maria., The second half of the 13th century, a period in which Alfonso X worked politically and culturally, represents the moment of greatest flowering of the Marian miracles in the European space. The collections of Marian miracles available at the time are both the product of a tradition of universally recognized works that narrate prodigious facts permitted by the mediation of the Virgin Mary, and the result of new additions to more traditional themes. Furthermore, the collections transmitted in Latin are joined by other collections in vernacular language originating not only from the pen of the new clerics or monks, but also from those of lay devotees, thus assuming completely new aspects and purposes. This contribution aims to offer a reasoned overview of these collections – both local and internationally distributed – accessible at least at the time of the sovereign Alfonso X, known as «The Wise».

Two manuscripts that once belonged to Hermann Suchier, forming part of a pious miscellany of the fifteenth century now largely lost, are preserved today in two U.S. libraries. Among the works they contain there are some vulgar texts from north-west Italy, mostly belonging to the narrative genre, some of which are still unpublished; among them there is a vernacularization of the Historia Apollonii Regis Tyri. The article provides a summary examination of the manuscripts and their content, focusing in particular on the narrative section and on the history of Apollonius of Tyre, which declines, partly in a new way, the fidelity to the Latin source.

- Abstract
In studies concerning the manuscript tradition of medieval Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry, the treatment of words beginning with h usually depends on etymological considerations. Accordingly, critical editors are more likely to spare the first letter of home and ha (Lat. hominem, habet) than that of hir and hũa (Lat. ire, unam). As this study shows, in the songbooks B and V and in the Sharrer parchment, etymology seems to play a secondary role at best, as initial h occurs almost exclusively in five lexemes: the noun home, the verb hir, the article hũu/ hũa and the adverbs hi and hu (Lat. ibi, ubi), which all drop their aitches when preceded by words with final vowel elision (e.g. «algun home» vs. «tod' ome», «quisera hir» vs. «quisera-m' ir», etc.). This h-/Ø alternation, characteristical of the 13th-14th century Portuguese (but not Galician) tradition, is the counterpart of the analogous treatment of h- in medieval French, Occitan and Italian. It constitutes an element of what might be defined the ortografia dionisina, distinct from the ortografía alfonsí of the Cancioneiro da Ajuda, the Vindel parchment and the MSS of the Cantigas de Santa María. International audience; This paper is meant to analyse the epic caesuras in the Old-French lyric poems with melody, according to those reported by Mölk and Wolfzettel’s Répertoire métrique. From a methodological point of view the relationship between editorial attitudes and musicology will be studied in the face of the problem of keeping or eliminating this kind of caesura.

The paper explores the meaning and role of the adoption of the iconographic motif of the woman in the act of writing in different contexts and ages, by outlining an overview starting with the archetypes related to classical culture, then examining the emblematic images created in the Middle Ages (not only the nun, the mystic, the virtuous women of De cleres et nobles femmes, but also the allegory of the Grammar and the representation of the writer Christine de Pizan), and concluding with the modern age cases (the Virgin as a pupil of Anna or teacher of Jesus, the ideal model of the “palace woman”, the composer, the academic, the aristocrat or the well educated middle-class woman while writing a private letter). This paper is not intended to present a complete overview of the iconographies concerning the relationship between woman and written culture, but to cast light on some emblematic examples, by giving priority as far as possible to three analysis themes: the figurative cases in which the female figure is caught in the act of writing rather than reading, the images in which the handwritten text is made visible in order to indicate the contents suitable for the female eye; the works painted by women artist, interesting as the result of an internal perspective connected with the emergence of a specific self-awareness.

The Corpus Rhythmorm Musicum (CRM) is a project created by Francesco Stella; here there are the critic editions of rhytmhi – Medieval Latin poems based on syllables and stretches – written from iv to ix century and provided at least with one melody transmitted by the manuscript tradition. After the first volume and CD-ROM publication (Florence, SISMEL, 2007), containing songs from non-liturgical sources, Luigi Tessarolo has reprogrammed the database for the web on 2011. In the database, freely accessible online (), for every rhythmus, in addition to the digital edition of poems and music (edited by S. Barrett), you can view all the collated manuscripts and their descriptions; the transcriptions of poems and melodies (together with the alphanumeric ones and the musical performances directed by G. Baroffio, who also found the modern transcriptions); the introductions with historical, literary and ecdotic profiles, the tabs Versi and Lingua. From these originate the linguistic tables edited by C. Cenni, F. Sivo, P. Stoppacci, the lexical statistics, a repertoire of rhythmic forms edited by E. D’Angelo and C. Pérez González and a search menu that allows you to ask complex questions to the database. Here we present the analysis possibilities offered by the CRM and we investigate the role played by the melodic element in the formation of these compositions. Finally, we indicate some studies arisen thanks to the database, as well as the ongoing projects: the edition of the rhythmi computistici – on calendar, astronomy and method for calculating Easter – and the rhythmic hymns.

The article focuses on the communicative skills of Vincent Ferrer and on his ability to merge catechesis and narrative inventiveness. The analysis is conducted on six versions of the sermon Repleti sunt omnes Spiritu Sancto (notes, reportationes, and model sermons), which were preached by Ferrer in different parts of Europe. The texts highlight how Pentecost provided Ferrer with the opportunity to develop a lively dramatisation of the biblical episode and how preaching gave to the faithful a mediated, and yet not simplistic access to the Bible. By presenting the apostolic community as the exemplary model for his listeners, Ferrer elaborated on both the role of preaching and the way to welcome the Holy Spirit.

The article addresses the issues and challenges of special collections management through the case study of Timbuktu manuscript collections. The dual issues of preservation and access are presented in the light of current librarianship trends, highlighting the potential weaknesses of special collections libraries when faced with new missions. Given that inclusion and civil growth are part of Lyon’s declaration on libraries, we should check to which extent we are able to comply with these requirements also with respect to special collections. The Malian projects provide a good point of view because of the number of activities that are currently being performed: the main activities and the way the work is organised are described, addressing at the same time the issue of access and scholar needs. A reflection is developed on the role of special collections in the changing landscape of libraries’ activities and missions.

This article explores the possibility of an aural and/or performative context for the reception and dissemination of Dudo of Saint-Quentin’s Historia Normannorum. Scholarship to date has produced two main schools of thought concerning the Historia Normannorum’s target audiences during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, one of which discusses Dudo’s work in the capacity of a Latin school book, thereby emphasising its didactic and educational purpose, whereas the other identifies the main circles of reception at the courts of the Norman dukes and their peers, thus stressing the text’s potential for dynastic self-fashioning, ritual and display. Drawing on the primary evidence of the surviving eleventh- and twelfth-century manuscripts, and combining it with recent theoretical work concerning the different modes of literary communication, this article argues that these schools of thoughts are not mutually exclusive. Based on a detailed study of the manuscripts’ punctuation and mise-en-page (including their use of colour), the article showcases the Historia Normannorum as a “multimedia text” that rather naturally lent itself to being read and/or performed in an aural setting. Conceptualising Norman literature and historiography in such a way significantly enriches and transforms our understanding of literary and poetic culture in the Norman and Anglo-Norman worlds.

The Italian Central Institute of Cataloguing (ICCU) has developed a web application to export manuscript descriptions from Manus OnLine (MOL), the Italian national catalogue of manuscripts, into TEI XML documents. As of June 2013, single descriptions can be downloaded from the MOL Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) as TEI XML documents by any user. The aim of the first tool is to supply manuscript descriptions to the institutions which produced them using MOL, because libraries and research organizations need to use their own data, outside the MOL project. The aim of the second service – exporting manuscript catalogues of entire collections as TEI XML files - is to promote exchange of data with other national and international projects. For these purposes, the ICCU needs a rich schema, not only a partial set of metadata, in order to be able to export complete structured manuscript descriptions. As bibliographical standards (MARC, Unimarc) cannot represent the entire structure of MOL descriptions adequately, ICCU adopted the TEI schema as an interchange standard. This paper describes solutions adopted by ICCU in encoding MOL contents within the TEI element and problems they encountered in performing this work. The encoding of information about material (), number of folios and physical dimensions of manuscripts () are discussed as well as a list of data pertaining to original letter cataloguing.
