Abstract

We report the first long-term measurements of the radiation quality factor of energetic charged particles on the surface of Mars. The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) aboard the Mars Science Laboratory rover, also known as Curiosity, has been operating on Mars since 2012. RAD contains thin silicon detectors that record the ionization energy loss of energetic charged particles. The particles are dominantly galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and the products of their interactions in the Martian atmosphere, with occasional contributions from solar energetic particles (SEPs). The quality factor on the surface of Mars is influenced by two factors: variations in the shielding provided by the atmosphere, and changes in the spectrum of the incident energetic particle flux due to the 11-year solar cycle. The two cannot be easily disentangled using the data alone, but insights can be gained from calculations and Monte Carlo simulations., (Copyright © 2019 The Committee on Space Research (COSPAR). Abstract

We determined radiogenic and cosmogenic noble gases in a mudstone on the floor of Gale Crater. A K-Ar age of 4.21 ± 0.35 billion years represents a mixture of detrital and authigenic components and confirms the expected antiquity of rocks comprising the crater rim. Cosmic-ray-produced (3)He, (21)Ne, and (36)Ar yield concordant surface exposure ages of 78 ± 30 million years. Surface exposure occurred mainly in the present geomorphic setting rather than during primary erosion and transport. Our observations are consistent with mudstone deposition shortly after the Gale impact or possibly in a later event of rapid erosion and deposition. The mudstone remained buried until recent exposure by wind-driven scarp retreat. Sedimentary rocks exposed by this mechanism may thus offer the best potential for organic biomarker preservation against destruction by cosmic radiation.

Abstract

The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft, containing the Curiosity rover, was launched to Mars on 26 November 2011, and for most of the 253-day, 560-million-kilometer cruise to Mars, the Radiation Assessment Detector made detailed measurements of the energetic particle radiation environment inside the spacecraft. These data provide insights into the radiation hazards that would be associated with a human mission to Mars. We report measurements of the radiation dose, dose equivalent, and linear energy transfer spectra. The dose equivalent for even the shortest round-trip with current propulsion systems and comparable shielding is found to be 0.66 ± 0.12 sievert.

Abstract

Protecting astronauts from the effects of space radiation remains one major stepping stone for the exploration of Mars. Long‐term exposure to radiation can lead to severe health effects and affects allowable mission duration. Mission designs for Mars include the use of radiation shelters that provide additional mass to surround the astronauts. This leads to incoming radiation losing energy through ionization processes. This is important during solar energetic particle events when solar protons can reach the surface with high intensities. Additionally, shelters provide a long‐term reduction of the exposure to galactic cosmic rays. As mass is an important time and cost factor in space travel, using natural sheltering already on Mars is a desirable option. One candidate is to use subterranean lava tubes that provide shelter from the radiation from above. Other options include craters, cliff walls, or rock overhangs. Here, we present the first in situ measurements of radiation sheltering by natural environments on the surface of Mars. The data were acquired with the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) on board the Curiosity rover in Gale crater on Mars. We show measurements from when Curiosity was parked close to Butte M12 in the Murray Buttes formation, which blocked out 19% of the surrounding sky view. During this time, from Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) sol 1456–1467, we find a decrease of 4% in the expected dose rate, and a decrease of 7.5% in the neutral particle environment. This proof of principle is an important step to validate plans to use natural sheltering on Mars. Plain Language Summary: Protecting astronauts on Mars from the exposure to space radiation remains one of the major challenges for the human exploration of the red planet. A viable option for this is to provide the astronauts with a radiation shelter that surrounds the astronauts with enough mass and material to reduce the effects of radiation. Since bringing additional material from Earth to Mars is extremely time and cost prohibitive, making use of natural terrain and rocks on Mars would theoretically be ideal for this purpose. Here, we present the first‐ever measurements taken on Mars with the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) that prove that natural terrain provides such radiation protection. While NASA's Curiosity rover was parked up close to a butte for 12 days, RAD measured a distinct decrease in radiation dose. This was due to the butte blocking out part of the sky and, thus, shielding the rover from the space radiation coming from the direction of the butte. Abstract

In deep space, personnel and equipment are exposed to the space radiation environment in the form of energetic particles, specifically galactic cosmic rays and sporadic solar energetic particle events. Radiation fields resulting from these particles are modified by shielding, but most radiation measurements in deep space have been made with detectors that were unshielded or very lightly shielded. In contrast, the space radiation environment on the International Space Station (ISS) is more complicated, with time‐dependent modification of the incident flux by the geomagnetic field and complex bulk shielding distributions; measured particle spectra inside the ISS are affected by both types of shielding. The geomagnetic field is also responsible for the existence of the South Atlantic Anomaly, a region of trapped energetic protons and electrons, and hence enhanced radiation dose, through which the ISS travels several times per day on average. Here our primary aim is to compare charged‐particle spectra at high linear energy transfer obtained by the Anomalous Long‐Term Effects in Astronauts instrument on ISS during high‐latitude portions of the orbit to data acquired at the same time by the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation and Radiation Assessment Detector instruments, both in deep space. The hypothesis being tested is that these spectra are the same, modulo shielding differences, since the effects of the geomagnetic field are expected to be minimal at high latitudes. Plain Language Summary: Exposure to highly energetic particle radiation in space is a concern for current and future human missions. To date, only the Apollo astronauts have ventured outside the protective effects of the Earth's magnetic field, but astronauts on future missions back to the Moon, or to Mars or other destinations in deep space, will not have this protection. In the high‐latitude parts of the orbit of the International Space Station, the magnetic shielding is weak, and in principle we expect the radiation environment there to be very similar to that in deep space. Here we present the first direct test of this hypothesis, using data obtained by three different particle detectors, one aboard the ISS, one in lunar orbit, and one that was in interplanetary space between Earth and Mars for part of the time period being studied, and on the surface of Mars for the rest of the period of interest. Abstract

Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover observations of the 2018/Mars year 34 global/planet‐encircling dust storm represent the first in situ measurements of a global dust storm with dedicated meteorological sensors since the Viking Landers. The Mars Science Laboratory team planned and executed a science campaign lasting approximately 100 Martian sols to study the storm involving an enhanced cadence of environmental monitoring using the rover's meteorological sensors, cameras, and spectrometers. Mast Camera 880‐nm optical depth reached 8.5, and Rover Environmental Monitoring Station measurements indicated a 97% reduction in incident total ultraviolet solar radiation at the surface, 30K reduction in diurnal range of air temperature, and an increase in the semidiurnal pressure tide amplitude to 40 Pa. No active dust‐lifting sites were detected within Gale Crater, and global and local atmospheric dynamics were drastically altered during the storm. This work presents an overview of the mission's storm observations and initial results. Most of the dust was sourced from outside Gale Crater, with no indications of dust lifting within the crater during the height of the storm. Meteorological conditions were substantially altered, with changes to the pressure, temperature, and humidity patterns. Dust devil activity ceased for several weeks due to the reduction in temperature contrast between the surface and atmosphere. There was no indication of unusual aeolian transport, suggesting Martian global dust storms are not a major cause of sand dune movement. Abstract

Abstract: On 10 September 2017, some of the strongest solar activity occurred in association with active region 12673 (AR2673), including an X‐class solar flare and a fast coronal mass ejection. Although AR2673 was not centrally facing Mars, the activity impacted the local space weather conditions at Mars. We give an overview of observations obtained from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN, Mars Science Laboratory, and Mars Express missions. Numerical results from the Wang‐Sheeley‐Arge (WSA)‐Enlil‐cone model together with Earth/L1 and STEREO‐A observations are also presented to provide some heliospheric context. We discuss the initial results on the space weather impacts at Mars, which include heating of the upper atmosphere by solar flare emissions, flare‐related enhancements of ion and neutral densities, solar energetic particles impacting the atmosphere and surface, bright emissions of a diffuse (global) aurora, deeply penetrating interplanetary magnetic fields over the Martian dayside, and enhanced atmospheric escape rates. Abstract

Abstract: The 10–12 September Solar Energetic Particle event produced the strongest increase of the radiation environment measured by the Radiation Assessment Detector on the surface of Mars since landing in August 2012. We report the details of the measurements of the energetic particle environment from Radiation Assessment Detector in Gale crater during this event. The Solar Energetic Particle event increased the low‐energy proton flux (below 100 MeV) by a factor of 30, and the higher‐energy proton flux by a factor of 4, above preevent levels. The 4He flux (below 100 MeV/nuc) rose by factors up to 10, and neutral particles by a factor of 2 above background. The increase started on 10 September around 19:50 UTC, peak‐level fluxes were reached on the morning of 11 September and prevailed for about 10 hr before decreasing toward background levels. The onset of a Forbush decrease on 13 September decreased the proton flux below preevent intensities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Going to Mars The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft containing the Curiosity rover, was launched from Earth in November 2011 and arrived at Gale crater on Mars in August 2012. Zeitlin et al. (p. 1080 ) report measurements of the energetic particle radiation environment inside the spacecraft during its cruise to Mars, confirming the hazard likely to be posed by this radiation to astronauts on a future potential trip to Mars. Williams et al. (p. 1068 , see the Perspective by Jerolmack ) report the detection of sedimentary conglomerates (pebbles mixed with sand and turned to rock) at Gale crater. The rounding of the rocks suggests abrasion of the pebbles as they were transported by flowing water several kilometers or more from their source.

Abstract

Mars' Atmosphere from Curiosity The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on the Curiosity rover that landed on Mars in August last year is designed to study the chemical and isotopic composition of the martian atmosphere. Mahaffy et al. (p. 263 ) present volume-mixing ratios of Mars' five major atmospheric constituents (CO 2 , Ar, N 2 , O 2 , and CO) and isotope measurements of 40 Ar/ 36 Ar and C and O in CO 2 , based on data from one of SAM's instruments, obtained between 31 August and 21 November 2012. Webster et al. (p. 260 ) used data from another of SAM's instruments obtained around the same period to determine isotope ratios of H, C, and O in atmospheric CO 2 and H 2 O. Agreement between the isotopic ratios measured by SAM with those of martian meteorites, measured in laboratories on Earth, confirms the origin of these meteorites and implies that the current atmospheric reservoirs of CO 2 and H 2 O were largely established after the period of early atmospheric loss some 4 billion years ago.

Abstract

International audience; "Jake_M," the first rock analyzed by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer instrument on the Curiosity rover, differs substantially in chemical composition from other known martian igneous rocks: It is alkaline (>15% normative nepheline) and relatively fractionated. Jake_M is compositionally similar to terrestrial mugearites, a rock type typically found at ocean islands and continental rifts. By analogy with these comparable terrestrial rocks, Jake_M could have been produced by extensive fractional crystallization of a primary alkaline or transitional magma at elevated pressure, with or without elevated water contents. The discovery of Jake_M suggests that alkaline magmas may be more abundant on Mars than on Earth and that Curiosity could encounter even more fractionated alkaline rocks (for example, phonolites and trachytes).

Abstract

Samples from the Rocknest aeolian deposit were heated to ~835°C under helium flow and evolved gases analyzed by Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite. H 2 O, SO 2 , CO 2 , and O 2 were the major gases released. Water abundance (1.5 to 3 weight percent) and release temperature suggest that H 2 O is bound within an amorphous component of the sample. Decomposition of fine-grained Fe or Mg carbonate is the likely source of much of the evolved CO 2 . Evolved O 2 is coincident with the release of Cl, suggesting that oxygen is produced from thermal decomposition of an oxychloride compound. Elevated δD values are consistent with recent atmospheric exchange. Carbon isotopes indicate multiple carbon sources in the fines. Several simple organic compounds were detected, but they are not definitively martian in origin.

Abstract

The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity scooped samples of soil from the Rocknest aeolian bedform in Gale crater. Analysis of the soil with the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) x-ray diffraction (XRD) instrument revealed plagioclase (~An57), forsteritic olivine (~Fo62), augite, and pigeonite, with minor K-feldspar, magnetite, quartz, anhydrite, hematite, and ilmenite. The minor phases are present at, or near, detection limits. The soil also contains 27 ± 14 weight percent x-ray amorphous material, likely containing multiple Fe 3+ - and volatile-bearing phases, including possibly a substance resembling hisingerite. The crystalline component is similar to the normative mineralogy of certain basaltic rocks from Gusev crater on Mars and of martian basaltic meteorites. The amorphous component is similar to that found on Earth in places such as soils on the Mauna Kea volcano, Hawaii.

Abstract

The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity, operating on the surface of Mars, is exposed to radiation fluxes from above and below. Galactic Cosmic Rays travel through the Martian atmosphere, producing a modified spectrum consisting of both primary and secondary particles at ground level. These particles produce an upward directed secondary particle spectrum as they interact with the Martian soil. Here we develop a method to distinguish the upward and downward directed particle fluxes in the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) instrument, verify it using data taken during the cruise to Mars, and apply it to data taken on the Martian surface. We use a combination of Geant4 and Planetocosmics modeling to find discrimination criteria for the flux directions. After developing models of the cruise phase and surface shielding conditions, we compare model‐predicted values for the ratio of upward to downward flux with those found in RAD observation data. Given the quality of available information on Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft and rover composition, we find generally reasonable agreement between our models and RAD observation data. This demonstrates the feasibility of the method developed and tested here. We additionally note that the method can also be used to extend the measurement range and capabilities of the RAD instrument to higher energies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The radiation environment in free space and the related radiation exposure is seen as one of the main health detriments for future long-duration human exploration missions beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The steady flux of energetic particles in the galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) produces a low dose-rate radiation exposure, which is heavily influenced by several factors including the solar cycle, the presence of an atmosphere, relevant magnetic fields (as on Earth) and of course by the relevant spacecraft shielding. Investigations of the GCR variations over the course of a solar cycle provide valuable data for exploration mission planning and for the determination of the radiation load received due to the GCR environment. Within the current work these investigations have been performed applying three datasets generated on board the International Space Station (ISS) with the DOSTEL instruments in the frame of the DOSIS and DOSIS-3D projects, with the CRaTER instrument in a Moon orbit and with the MSL-RAD instrument on the way to and on the surface of Mars. To derive GCR dose contributions on board the ISS two procedures have been developed separating the contributions from GCR from passing’s through the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), as well as ways to extrapolate the GCR dose measured on board the ISS to free space based on various ranges of the McIlwain L-shell parameter. At the end we provide a dataset spanning the timeframe for GCR measurements on the ISS (2009–2011 & 2012–2019), Moon (2009–2019) and Mars (2012–2019), thereby covering the time span from the deep minimum of solar cycle 23, the ascending phase and maximum of solar cycle 24, and the descending phase of cycle 24, which is ongoing at the time of this writing.

Abstract

Context: The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) has been measuring the radiation environment on the surface of Mars since August 6th 2012. MSL-RAD is the first instrument to provide detailed information about charged and neutral particle spectra and dose rates on the Martian surface, and one of the primary objectives of the RAD investigation is to help improve and validate current radiation transport models. Aims: Applying different numerical transport models with boundary conditions derived from the MSL-RAD environment the goal of this work was to both provide predictions for the particle spectra and the radiation exposure on the Martian surface complementing the RAD sensitive range and, at the same time, validate the results with the experimental data, where applicable. Such validated models can be used to predict dose rates for future manned missions as well as for performing shield optimization studies. Methods: Several particle transport models (GEANT4, PHITS, HZETRN/OLTARIS) were used to predict the particle flux and the corresponding radiation environment caused by galactic cosmic radiation on Mars. From the calculated particle spectra the dose rates on the surface are estimated. Results: Calculations of particle spectra and dose rates induced by galactic cosmic radiation on the Martian surface are presented. Although good agreement is found in many cases for the different transport codes, GEANT4, PHITS, and HZETRN/OLTARIS, some models still show large, sometimes order of magnitude discrepancies in certain particle spectra. We have found that RAD data is helping to make better choices of input parameters and physical models. Elements of these validated models can be applied to more detailed studies on how the radiation environment is influenced by solar modulation, Martian atmosphere and soil, and changes due to the Martian seasonal pressure cycle. By extending the range of the calculated particle spectra with respect to the experimental data additional information about the radiation environment is gained, and the contribution of different particle species to the dose is estimated.
