Molybdenum dioxide (MoO2), considering its near-metallic conductivity and surface plasmonic properties, is a great material for electronics, energy storage devices and biosensing. Yet to this day, room-temperature synthesis of large area MoO2, which allows deposition on arbitrary substrates, has remained a challenge. Due to their reactive interfaces and specific solubility conditions, gallium-based liquid metal alloys offer unique opportunities for synthesizing materials that can meet these challenges. Herein, a substrate-independent liquid metal-based method for the room temperature deposition and patterning of MoO2 is presented. By introducing a molybdate precursor to the surrounding of a eutectic gallium-indium alloy droplet, a uniform layer of hydrated molybdenum oxide (H2MoO3) is formed at the interface. This layer is then exfoliated and transferred onto a desired substrate. Utilizing the transferred H2MoO3 layer, a laser-writing technique is developed which selectively transforms this H2MoO3 into crystalline MoO2 and produces electrically conductive MoO2 patterns at room temperature. The electrical conductivity and plasmonic properties of the MoO2 are analyzed and demonstrated. The presented metal oxide room-temperature deposition and patterning method can find many applications in optoelectronics, sensing, and energy industries.

Atmospheric NO2 is of great concern due to its adverse effects on human health and the environment, motivating research on NO2 detection and remediation. Existing low-cost room-temperature NO2 sensors often suffer from low sensitivity at the ppb level or long recovery times, reflecting the trade-off between sensor response and recovery time. Here, we report an atomically dispersed metal ion strategy to address it. We discover that bimetallic PbCdSe quantum dot (QD) gels containing atomically dispersed Pb ionic sites achieve the optimal combination of strong sensor response and fast recovery, leading to a high-performance room-temperature p-type semiconductor NO2 sensor as characterized by a combination of ultra–low limit of detection, high sensitivity and stability, fast response and recovery. With the help of theoretical calculations, we reveal the high performance of the PbCdSe QD gel arises from the unique tuning effects of Pb ionic sites on NO2 binding at their neighboring Cd sites. Quantum dot-based NO2 sensors often suffer from low sensitivity or long recovery times. Here, the authors report that bimetallic PbCdSe quantum dot gels containing atomically dispersed Pb ionic sites enable ultra-sensitive and fast NO2 sensing.

Targeting the development of stimulus-responsive molecular materials with electronic functionality, we have synthesized and studied the redox and electronic properties of a new bimetallic iron hydrophobe [FeIII2(LN4O6)] (1). The new H6LN4O6 ligand displays bicompartmental topology capable of accomodating two five-coordinate HSFeIII ions bridged by tetraaminobenzene at a close distance of ca. 8 A. We show that the metal-based reduction processes in (1) proceed sequentially, as observed for electronically coupled metal centers. This species forms a well-defined Pockels-Langmuir film at the air–water interface, with collapse pressure of 32 mN m−1. Langmuir–Blodgett monolayers were deposited on gold substrates and used to investigate current–voltage (I–V) measurements. This unprecedented bimetallic hydrophobe [FeIII2(LN4O6)] (1) shows unquestionable molecular rectification and displays a rectification ratio RR between 2 and 15.

This paper describes the synthesis of a new type of nanowires, potassium tetracyanoplatinate sesquihydrate Krogmann salt or K(def)TCP. Seed-mediated electrocrystallization nucleates and confines the K(def)TCP crystals into nanowires. Our data show that the width of K(def)TCP scales proportionally with the diameter of the seed, which is consistent with the nanoconfinement effect of the seed. K(def)TCP nanowires are also electrodeposited on lithographic Au patterns as interconnects and tested for impedance-based gas sensing. The results demonstrate the use of electrocrystallization to construct nanowire sensing units directly on patterned substrates to enable scaling up of nanowire sensor technology. IMPACT STATEMENT We show for the first time nanowires directly formed as interconnects on electronic substrates by electrocrystallization are used as sensor materials to detect gases.

Layer-by-layer (LbL) films are assembled with poly(amido amine)s (PAAs), a type of polycations containing bioreducible disulfide bond, and DNA plasmids to enable LbL film degradation in physiologic conditions by reacting with glutathione or redox-active membrane proteins. The interior layer structure of the LbL films during assembly and disassembly is studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM), ellipsometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and fluorescence spectroscopy. Insertion of barrier layers in bioreducible LbL films is necessary to stabilize the interior layer structure and slow down the film degradation rate to achieve sequential gene delivery. Localized gene delivery from the LbL films is demonstrated using human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK 293) cells.

Purpose: Bombarding high-Z material with x-ray radiation releases Auger electrons and Coster–Kronig electrons, along with deeper penetrating fluorescent x-rays and photoelectrons. The Auger and Coster–Kronig electron penetration distance is on the order of nanometers to micrometers in water or tissue, creating a large dose enhancement accompanied by a RBE greater than 1 at the cellular level. The authors’ aim is to measure the gold nanofilm dose enhancement factor (DEF) at the cellular level with unlaminated radiochromic film via primary 50 kVp tungsten x-ray spectrum interaction, similar to an electronic brachytherapy spectrum. Methods: Unlaminated Gafchromic{sup ®} EBT2 film and Monte Carlo modeling were combined to derive DEF models. Gold film of thickness 23.1 ± 4.3 nm and surface roughness of 1.2 ± 0.2 nm was placed in contact with unlaminated radiochromic film in a downstream orientation and exposed to a 50 kVp tungsten bremsstrahlung, mean energy 19.2 keV. Film response correction factors were derived by Monte Carlo modeling of electron energy deposition in the film’s active layer, and by measuring film energy dependence from 4.5 keV to 50 kVp. Results: The measured DEF within a 13.6 μm thick water layer was 0.29 with a mean dose of 94 ± 9.4 cGymore » from Au emissions and 324 ± 32.4 cGy from the 50 kVp primary beam. Monte Carlo derived correction factors allowed determination of Au contributed dose in shallower depths at 0.25 μm intervals. Maximum DEF of 18.31 was found in the first 0.25 μm water depth. Conclusions: Dose enhancement from Au nanofilm can be measured at the cellular level using unlaminated radiochromic film. Complementing the measured dose value with Monte Carlo calculations allows estimation of dose enhancement at depth increments within the cellular range.« less

Forces between colloidal particles determine the performances of many industrial processes and products. Colloidal force measurements conducted between a colloidal particle AFM probe and particles immobilized on a flat substrate are valuable in selecting appropriate surfactants for colloidal stabilization. One of the features of inorganic fillers and extenders is the prevalence of rough surfaces-even the polymer latex particles, often used as model colloidal systems including the current study, have rough surfaces albeit at a much smaller scale. Surface roughness is frequently cited as the reason for disparity between experimental observations and theoretical treatment but seldom verified by direct evidence. This work reports the effect of nanoscale surface roughness on colloidal force measurements carried out in the presence of surfactants. We applied a heating method to reduce the mean surface roughness of commercial latex particles from 30 to 1 nm. We conducted force measurements using the two types of particles at various salt and surfactant concentrations. The surfactants used were pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, Pluronic F108, and a styrene/acrylic copolymer, Joncryl 60. In the absence of the surfactant, nanometer surface roughness affects colloidal forces only in high salt conditions when the Debye length becomes smaller than the surface roughness. The adhesion is stronger between colloids with higher surface roughness and requires a higher surfactant concentration to be eliminated. The effect of surface roughness on colloidal forces was also investigated as a function of the adsorbed surfactant layer structure characterized by AFM indentation and dynamic light scattering. We found that when the layer thickness exceeds the surface roughness, the colloidal adhesion is less influenced by surfactant concentration variation. This study demonstrates that surface roughness at the nanoscale can influence colloidal forces significantly and should be taken into account in colloidal dispersion formulations.

Major barriers for commercializing nanowire sensors are complicated synthesis technique and lack of scalable device assembly methods. Charge transfer salts (CTS), like tetrathiafulvalene bromide (TTFBr), have been well known for unique electric and chemical property. This talk will bring a controlled one-step deposition method to fabricate CTS nanowire sensors. By applying certain potentials to designed substrates, TTFBr nanowires can be directly deposited onto the electrodes. Varying deposition conditions and design of substrates are able to control the geometry, density and composition of TTFBr nanowires. TTFBr nanowire sensor shows high sensitivity, selectivity, and fast response towards ammonia gas. The detection limit is less than 1ppm and the response time, at room temperature, is less than 1 minute. Other CTS, like Cu- tetracyanoquinodimethane, can also be fabricated into nanowire sensor using the same method. This research shows a promising scalable fabrication method for various nanowire sensors and is being commercialized.

This paper describes electrochemical synthesis of nanorods of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) charge-transfer salt on gold nanoparticle (GNP) seeds. The seed-mediated process was monitored by cyclic voltammetry, AFM, and field-emission SEM. The electrodeposition of GNPs (nucleation seeds) on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) electrodes was studied as a function of the electrolytic conditions. The GNP size increases with increasing HAuCl4 concentration and decreasing applied overpotential. A morphological transition from quasi-spherical particles to dendritic aggregates occurs when the HAuCl4 concentration increases from 0.5 to 1 mM. The electrocrystallization of (TTF)Br0.76 on the GNP-decorated HOPG was investigated as a function of TTF concentration and GNP morphology. We observed a preferential nucleation of (TTF)Br0.76 on the GNP seed. The seed-mediated (TTF)Br0.76 crystals display a confined crystal morphology in comparison to those nucleated on bare HOPG. Nanopatterns have applications in many areas including sensors, optoelectronics, and crystallization screening. Particle lithography is a convenient method to manufacture nanoring nanopatterns based on organosilane surface chemistry. The pattern thickness is generally limited to the monolayer thickness. This work is focused on the chemical vapor deposition conditions that yield nanopatterns with multilayer thickness. The supra-monolayer n-octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) nanoring patterns are made using polystyrene particle lithography. The supra-monolayer nanopatterns are used as "nano-flasks" to deposit and nucleate nanoparticles of small organic molecules including n-docosane, aspirin, and clarithromycin. The supra-monolayer OTS nanopattern is an effective template for nanoparticle array deposition of all three chemicals with high degree of fidelity to the substrate pattern. The nanoparticle size is varied by solution concentration. The preferential deposition of the organic molecules inside the nanoring is attributed to the dewetting of the liquid film on the nanopattern. The dewetting process effectively distributes the liquid film among the "nano-flasks" so that millions of solution experiments can be carried out in isolated droplets with droplet volume as small as 1×10(-10) nL. The research demonstrates a method to manufacture "nano-flask" arrays for high-throughput nanoparticle deposition trials and manufacture of monodisperse organic/drug nanoparticles through self-assembly.

This paper describes nanorod formation induced by nanoparticle seeds. Carboxylic acids self-assemble on graphite into an epitaxial pattern. However, this persistent pattern is changed into nanorods by nanoparticles. Two control parameters have been identified, including nucleus/substrate contact angle and seed-to-critical nucleus size ratio. Effective carboxylic chain length and nanoparticle size range are identified, which can be related to the seed size effect. Some nanorods are detached when methyl-terminated nanoparticles are used, and the percentage of detached nanorods increases with increasing carbon chain length. In contrast, the nanorods do not detach from carboxyl-terminated nanoparticles. This study offers direct experimental evidence to molecular simulation prediction that nuclei display a confined morphology on a highly curved seed surface due to the difficulty of maintaining an unstrained structure and they readily detach from the surface during heterogeneous crystal nucleation. The aim of this study was to explore a cyclodextrin-erythromycin (CD-EM) complex for sustained treatment of orthopedic inflammation.Methods and results: Erythromycin was reacted with ß-cyclodextrin to form a nonhost-guest CD-EM complex using both kneading and stirring approaches. Physiochemical measurement data indicated that erythromycin and cyclodextrin formed a packing complex driven by intermolecular forces instead of a host-guest structure due to the limited space in the inner cavity of ß-cyclodextrin. The CD-EM complex improved the stability of erythromycin in aqueous solution and had a longer duration of bactericidal activity than free erythromycin. Cytotoxicity and cell differentiation were evaluated in both murine MC3T3 preosteoblast cells and RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells. The CD-EM complex was noncytotoxic and showed significant inhibition of osteoclast formation but had little effect on osteoblast viability and differentiation.Conclusion: These attributes are especially important for the delivery of an adequate amount of erythromycin to the site of periprosthetic inflammation and reducing local inflammation in a sustained manner.Keywords: erythromycin, cyclodextrin, drug stability, bactericidal activity, osteoclastogenesis

Micelle-based siRNA carriers (“micelleplexes”) were prepared from the A-B-C triblock copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PEG-PnBA-PDMAEMA), and their in vitro performance and in vivo biodistribution properties were compared with the benchmark PEGylated and basic polycation systems, PEG-PDMAEMA and PDMAEMA, respectively. The micelle architecture, incorporating increased PEG shielding and a larger particle size (~50 nm) than polycation-based complexes (polyplexes; ~10 nm), enhances siRNA delivery performance in two important aspects: in vitro gene silencing efficiency, and in vivo tumor accumulation. The in vitro gene silencing efficiency of the micelleplexes (24% in HeLa cells) was significantly better than the statistically-insignificant levels observed for PDMAEMA and PEG-PDMAEMA polyplexes under identical conditions. This enhancement is linked to the different mechanisms by which micelleplexes are internalized (i.e., caveolar, etc.) compared to PDMAEMA and PEG-PDMAEMA polyplexes. Folate-functionalization significantly improved micelleplex uptake but had negligible influence on gene silencing efficiency, suggesting that this parameter is not limited by cellular internalization. In vivo biodistribution analysis revealed that siRNA delivered by micelleplexes was more effectively accumulated and retained in tumor tissues than that delivered by PEGylated polyplexes. Overall, the micelle particle size and architecture appear to improve in vitro and in vivo delivery characteristics without significantly changing other properties, such as cytotoxicity and resistance to enzymes and dissociation. The self-assembled nature of micelleplexes is expected to enable incorporation of imaging modalities inside the hydrophobic micelle core, thus combining therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities. The findings from the present study suggest that the micelleplex-type carrier architecture is a useful platform for potential theranostic and tumor-targeting applications.

The effect of cross-linking layer-by-layer (LbL) films consisting of bioreducible poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (rPDMAEMA) and DNA is examined with regard to rigidity, biodegradability, cell adhesion, and transfection activity using 1,5-diiodopentane (DIP) cross-linker. DIP chemically reacts with the tertiary amines of rPDMAEMA, altering the chemical composition of these LbL films. The result is a change in surface morphology, film swelling behavior, and film rigidity, measured with AFM and ellipsometry. It is found that the apparent Young's modulus is increased more than 4 times its original value upon cross-linking. Cross-linking mass is additionally confirmed with a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). Comprehensive analyses of these experimental values were investigated to calculate the degree of cross-linking using the rubber elasticity theory and the Flory-Rehner theory. Additionally, the Flory-Huggins parameter, chi, was calculated. Good agreement in the two methods yields a cross-linking density of approximately 0.82 mmol/cm(3). The Flory-Huggins parameter increased upon cross-linking from 1.07 to 1.2, indicating increased hydrophobicity of the network and formation of bulk water droplets within the films. In addition, the effects of cross-linking on film disassembly by 1,4-dithiothreitol (DTT) are found to be insignificant despite the alteration in film rigidity. Mouse fibroblast cells and smooth muscle cells are used to study the effect of cross-linking on cell adhesion and cell transfection activity. In vitro transfection activity up to seven days is quantified using secreted alkaline phosphatase (SEAP) DNA. Film cross-linking is found to enhance cell adhesion and prolong the duration of cellular transfection. These results contribute to the development of bioreducible polymer coatings for localized gene delivery.

Dendrimers, with their well-defined globular shape and a high density of functional groups, are ideal nanoscale materials for templating sensor surfaces. This work exploits dendrimers as a versatile platform for capturing biomarkers with improved sensitivity and specificity. Synthesis, characterization, fabrication, and functional validation of the dendrimer-based assay platform are described. Bifunctional hydroxyl/thiol functionalized G4-polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer is synthesized and immobilized on to the polyethylene-glycol (PEG)-functionalized assay plate by coupling PEG-maleimide and dendrimer thiol groups. Simultaneously, part of the dendrimer thiol groups are converted to hydrazide functionalities. The resulting dendrimer-modified surface is coupled to the capture antibody in the Fc region of the oxidized antibody. This preserves the orientation flexibility of the antigen binding region (Fv) of the antibody. To validate the approach, the fabricated plates are further used as a solid phase for developing a sandwich type ELISA to detect IL-6 and IL-1β, important biomarkers for early stages of chorioamnionitis. The dendrimer-modified plate provides assays with significantly enhanced sensitivity, lower nonspecific adsorption, and a detection limit of 0.13 pg ml-1 for IL-6 luminol detection and 1.15 pg ml-1 for IL-1β TMB detection, which are significantly better than those for the traditional ELISA. The assays were validated in human serum samples from normal (non-pregnant) woman and pregnant women with pyelonephritis. The specificity and the improved sensitivity of the dendrimer-based capture strategy could have significant implications for the detection of a wide range of cytokines and biomarkers since the capture strategy could be applied to multiplex microbead assays, conductometric immunosensors and field effect biosensors.

The possibility of using surface topography for guidance of different biological molecules and cells is a relevant topic that can be applied to a wide research activity. This study investigated the adsorption of fibronectin to a diffraction grated silicon surface. The rectangular grating profile featured a controlled surface with 350 nm period and a corrugation depth of 90 nm. Results demonstrated that the controlled surface had a significantly positive effect on the fibronectin binding. Thus, nanoscale surface topography can enhance fibronectin binding.

This paper reports the disassembly of layer-by-layer (LbL) films of plasmid DNA and a reducible cationic polypeptide. To utilize a reducing microenvironment of cellular plasma membrane as a potential trigger, LbL films are assembled to contain both DNA and the TAT-based polypeptide (PTAT) with reducible disulfide bonds in the backbone. The assembly and disassembly processes are monitored by goniometry, ellipsometry, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The structure of the PTAT films is compared with that of non-reducible poly( l -lysine) (PLL) films. Both PTAT and PLL films exhibit exponential growth but with the contact angle alternating between characteristic values. Ellipsometry and AFM show a gradual and complete disassembly of the PTAT but not the PLL films in a 24 h period in the reducing environment in vitro. This study suggests a potential of using reducible LbL films for controlled DNA delivery.

The reactivity of aminosilane and vinylsilane with a dihydroxy (Bisphenol AF) crosslinkable fluoroelastomer containing only vinylidene fluoride (VF2) and hexafluoropropylene (HFP) was monitored using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The DSC results showed that the introduction of an aminosilane, or a combination of aminosilane and vinylsilane solutions, to the cure system of the fluoroelastomer resulted in a peak shift. This shift indicates that crosslinking in fluoroelastomer-silane system occurs at a lower temperature when aminosilane is present. Results also confirm that the organofunctional group on the silane reacts with the elastomer. XPS analysis of the silane-coated fluoroelastomer heated at 120 °C, 160 °C and 200 °C reveals that dehydrofluorination of the polymer is one of the steps in the reaction. It is our hypothesis that the amine group on the aminosilane is a contributor to the dehydrofluorination of the fluoroelastomer.

This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of polystyrene nanorods in hemicylindrical hemimicelles of a nonionic polyoxyethylene surfactant, C 12 E 5, on graphite. The surface structure is characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle goniometry. Uniformly aligned polystyrene nanorods are captured by AFM. The nanorod dimensions are studied as a function of the reaction time and styrene monomer concentration. The template synthesis using self-assembled surfactant surface aggregates promises to create functional and stable nanostructures for optoelectronics and surface engineering.

The influence of solvents (alcohols and binary mixtures of alcohol and water) on the structure and permeability of self-assembled layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) has been investigated by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). A decrease in the dielectric constant of the solvent medium increases the strength of electrostatic interactions between the polyelectrolyte chains because the Coulombic force is inversely proportional to the dielectric constant. The stronger attractions as a result of increased alcohol volume percentage in water drive the polyelectrolyte chains to contract, collapse, and coagulate. Consequently, subtle changes in the PEM film structure are observed. AFM images show that the originally smooth surface of the PEM film becomes rougher with aggregates and holes developing with increasing alcohol amount. Temperature- and pH-controlled association of terpolymers of N -isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) with 1-vinylimidazole (VI) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) has been investigated by light scattering and atomic force microscopy (AFM) in situ. The polymers contained 0–15 mol% VI and 0–2 mol% PEG. The phase transition temperatures ( T p ) have been in the range of 32–45 °C and exhibited significant dependence on the pH of solution in the pH range between 5 and 8. The T p of the polymers increased with increasing VI content and with decreasing pH, confirming major effect of VI ionization status on T p . The presence of PEG grafts in the polymer structure had augmenting effect on the magnitude of pH-responsiveness and on the pH-independent colloidal stability of the polymer particles formed above T p . Incorporation of VI into the polymer structure had similar, but pH-dependent effect on colloidal stabilization of the polymer particles. The size of the particles formed after the phase transition is driven by the association of the collapsed NIPA segments in the globule conformation and it decreased with decreasing pH. The phase transition temperature of the polymers could be adjusted to increase from temperatures below, to temperatures above body temperature upon decreasing pH from 7 to 6, suggesting that such polymers could provide a material platform for a variety of biomedical applications. AFM analysis in situ showed a fully reversible formation of particles in the solutions of the polymers above their T p .

The Layer-by-layer deposition of positively and negatively charged macromolecular species is an ideal method for constructing thin films incorporating biological molecules. We investigate the adsorption of fibronectin onto polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films using optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). PEM films are formed by adsorption onto Si(Ti)O2 from alternately introduced flowing solutions of anionic poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and cationic poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). Using OWLS, we find the initial rate and overall extent offibronectin adsorption to be greatest on PEM films terminated with a PAH layer. The polarizability density of the adsorbed protein layer, as measured by its refractive index, is virtually identical on both PAH- and PSS-terminated films; the higher adsorbed density on the PAH-terminated film is due to an adsorbed layer of roughly twice the thickness. The binding of monoclonal antibodies specific to the protein's cell binding site is considerably enhanced to fibronectin adsorbed to the PSS layer, indicating a more accessible adsorbed layer. With increased salt concentration, we find thicker PEM films but considerably thinner adsorbed fibronectin layers, owing to increased electrostatic screening. Using AFM, we find adsorbed fibronectin layers to contain clusters; these are more numerous and symmetric on the PSS-terminated film. By considering the electrostatic binding of a segmental model fibronectin molecule, we propose a picture of fibronectin adsorbed primarily in an end-on-oriented monolayer on a PAH-terminated film and as clusters plus side-on-oriented isolated molecules onto a PSS-terminated film.

The self-associating structures at the solid-liquid interface of three nonionic trisiloxane surfactants ((CH3)3SiO)2Si(CH3)(CH2)3(OCH2CH2)n OH (n = 6, 8, and 12), or BEn, are studied as a function of substrate properties by atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging and force measurement. These trisiloxane surfactants are known as superwetters, which promote rapid spreading of dilute aqueous solutions on low-energy surfaces. This study also attempts to relate the BEn surface aggregate structures at the solid-liquid interface to their superwetting behavior. Four substrates are used in the study: muscovite mica, highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, and oxidized silicon wafer with and without a full monolayer of self-assembled n-octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS). The concentration of BEn is fixed at 2 times the critical aggregation concentration (CAC). The BEn surfactants are only weakly attracted to hydrophilic surfaces, more on oxidized silicon than on mica. All three form ordinary planar monolayers on HOPG and OTS-covered oxidized silicon. The significance of surfactant adsorption on the AFM tip is investigated by comparing the force curves obtained by tips with and without thiol modification. The surface aggregate structures of the BEn surfactants correlate with their bulk structures and do not exhibit anomalous adsorption behavior. The adsorption behavior of the BEn superwetters is similar to that of the CmEn surfactants. Thus, our results confirm previous work showing that superwetting shares its main features with other classes of surfactants.

Through the direct measurement on the microscopic image of a two-dimensional (2-D) colloidal polycrystalline array, the statistical distribution profiles of the crystalline grain size and the defect density were determined. At the same time, an optical diffraction analysis method was developed to extract the mean values of these two parameters from the measured diffraction pattern. Results from the two methods were compared. We found that both parameters obey the Poisson distribution. For grain size, the discrete unit of the distribution is the average distance between the neighboring defects. It implies that the growth of crystalline grains displays a process of increasing grain size with this quantum value. A possible reason for this distribution is discussed based on the atomic force microscopy (AFM) images.

Synthetic vector-based gene delivery continues to gain strength as viable alternatives to viral vectors due to safety and other concerns. DNA release dynamics is key to the understanding and control of gene delivery from nanosystems. Here we describe atomic force microscope (AFM) application to the understanding of DNA release dynamics from bioreducible polycation-based nanosystems. The two nanosystems are polyplex nanoparticles and layer-by-layer (LbL) films.

This paper describes the formation of organic nanorods induced by monolayer-protected inorganic nanoparticles. Alkanes and alkane derivatives, such as n-carboxylic acids, self-assemble on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) into a persistent molecular packing structure that is dictated by the epitaxial interaction between the carbon chain plane and the HOPG basal plane. Carboxylic acids form 2-D crystalline layers consisting of nanostripe domains whose periodicity is one or two times the molecular chain length. However, when the molecular ordering occurs in the vicinity of a nanoparticle, this persistent HOPG-dominated nanostripe pattern is disrupted, and nanorods attached to the nanoparticles become the dominant structure. In order to understand the underlying mechanism of the nanoparticle-mediated nanorod formation, the effects of film-forming conditions, carboxylic acid chain length, nanoparticle size, and chemical composition of the nanoparticle are examined. It is determined that carboxylic acid nanorods can be induced by nanoparticles of different core materials including CdSe, CdS, and Au, as long as the protecting monolayer allows sufficient dispersion and colloidal stability of the nanoparticles in solution. A carboxylic chain length range amenable to the nanorod formation is identified, as is the relationship between the nanoparticle size and the number of nanorods per nanoparticle. This study contributes to the understanding of seed-mediated crystallization and molecular ordering. Moreover, it defines the parameters governing solution-based formation of hybrid nanostructures and nanopatterns incorporating dual functionality as defined by the inorganic nanoparticle and organic nanorod, respectively.

DNA release dynamics from layer-by-layer (LbL) films is an important aspect to consider with regards to localized gene delivery systems. The rate of DNA release and the condensation state of DNA during release are of particular interest in the field of gene delivery. A hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (RHB) containing bioreducible disulfide bonds is used to form interpolyelectrolyte complexes with DNA during LbL film assembly. During film disassembly, DNA is released in physiologic conditions due to the reducing nature of the RHB. Uncondensed DNA deposited on the surface was compared to DNA condensed by RHB in polyplex form by using two types of LbL films, RHB/DNA/RHB and polyplex terminated films, RHB/DNA/polyplex. LbL films with up to three layers are used in order to facilitate high-resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging. X-ray reflectivity, ellipsometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are also used. The film disassembly, rearrangement, and release of molecules from the surface due to thiol-disulfide exchange is conducted in reducing dithiothreitol (DTT) solutions. Salt is found to accelerate the overall rate of film disassembly. Additionally, it was found that the polyplex layer disassembles faster than the DNA layer. The predominant intermediate structure is the toroid structure for the polyplex layer and the fiber bundle structure for the DNA layer during film disassembly. This study offers a simple means to modulate DNA release from LbL films by utilizing both condensed and uncondensed DNA in different layers. The study highlights nanostructures, toroids, and bundles as dominant intermediate DNA structures during DNA release from LbL films.

Layer-by-layer (LbL) films were assembled on flexible stainless steel substrate using plasmid DNA and reducible hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (RHB) polycation. The films were characterized by XPS and their disassembly in reducing conditions confirmed by ellipsometry. Fibroblast and smooth muscle cell attachment and proliferation on DNA/RHB films were indistinguishable from those on control DNA/poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) films. In vitro transfection activity was evaluated using reporter plasmids encoding for secreted alkaline phosphatase (SEAP) and green fluorescent protein (GFP). DNA/RHB films showed higher and longer lasting transfection activity than control DNA/PEI films using SEAP plasmid. It was revealed through the use of GFP plasmid that DNA/RHB films transfected almost the entire cell population growing on the films. In vivo transfection activity was evaluated by subcutaneously implanting a stainless steel substrate coated with the DNA/RHB films containing SEAP plasmid DNA and measuring the levels of SEAP secreted into the blood circulation of rats. It was found that the plasma levels of SEAP peaked at approximately 160 ng SEAP/mL five days post-implantation.

Two-dimensional periodic structures with nanometer feature sizes have been widely used in many photonic devices. The profile and size of the nanostructure elements can greatly affect optical performances. Various practical subwavelength structures working in the visible and near infrared region have been fabricated using electron-beam writing or laser interference techniques. In this paper, we present a new technique which use nanosphere lithography (NSL) and reactive-ion etching to fabricate two-dimensional nanostructures with tunable nanoelement size and profile.

We use the self-assembled polystyrene nanosphere monolayer pattern to replace photoresist mask for the fabrication of 2D nanostructures on various substrates. The optical properties of these artificial structures are measured and compared with theoretical calculation.

We report the first results of self-assembled nanostructures using colloids for antireflection optical coatings. Two-dimensional (2D) periodic nano-structures were made by using self-assembled 2D colloidal crystals on top of a transparent substrate. An atomic force microscope was used to evaluate the quality of the nanostructure. The feature size of the structures was around 105 nm. This sub-wavelength structure is equivalent to an artificial film on top of the substrate. The effective refractive index of the film is found to be around 1.3. Such a low-index materials is desired for anti-reflection coating to reduce Fresnal reflection. We have observed the reduced reflection from glass surfaces as well as enhanced transmission. Our calculated results agree well with experimental measurement.

The morphology and stability of small unilamellar egg yolk phosphatidylcholine (EggPC) liposomes modified with the Pluronic® copolymer (poly (oxyethylene)–poly (oxypropylene)–poly (oxyethylene) (PEO–PPO–PEO)) with different compositions on mica surface have been investigated using atomic force microscopy. Morphology studies reveal significant morphological changes of liposomes upon incorporating the Pluronic® copolymer. Bilayers are observed for Pluronic® with small hydrophilic (PEO) chain lengths such as L81 [(PEO)2(PPO)40(PEO)2] and L121 [(PEO)4(PPO)60(PEO)4]; bilayer and vesicle coexistence is observed for P85 [(PEO)26(PPO)39.5(PEO)26] and F87 [(PEO)61.1(PPO)39.7(PEO)61.1]; and stable vesicles are observed for F88 [(PEO)103.5(PPO)39.2(PEO)103.5], F127 [(PEO)100(PPO)65(PEO)100], and F108 [(PEO)132.6(PPO)50.3(PEO)132.6]. The micromechanical properties of Pluronic®-modified EggPC vesicles were studied by analyzing AFM approaching force curve. The bending modulus ( k c ) of the Pluronic®-modified EggPC vesicles increased several-fold compared with that of the pure EggPC vesicles. The significant difference is due to the enhanced rigidity of the EggPC vesicles as a result of the incorporation of PPO molecules and PEO chains. Based on the analysis of onset point by AFM and diameters of vesicles by light scattering, it was concluded that the favorable model to describe the polymer–bilayer interaction is the membrane-spanning model.

The failure of prosthesis after total joint replacement is due to the lack of early implant osseointegration. In this study polyvinyl alcohol-collagen-hydroxyapatite (PVA-Col-HA) electrospun nanofibrous meshes were fabricated as a biomimetic bone-like extracellular matrix for the modification of orthopedic prosthetic surfaces. In order to reinforce the PVA nanofibers, HA nanorods and Type I collagen were incorporated into the nanofibers. We investigated the morphology, biodegradability, mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the prepared nanofibers. Our results showed these inorganic-organic blended nanofibers to be degradable in vitro. The encapsulated nano-HA and collagen interacted with the PVA content, reinforcing the hydrolytic resistance and mechanical properties of nanofibers that provided longer lasting stability. The encapsulated nano-HA and collagen also enhanced the adhesion and proliferation of murine bone cells (MC3T3) in vitro. We propose the PVA-Col-HA nanofibers might be promising modifying materials on implant surfaces for orthopedic applications.

We have created nanospirals by self-assembly during droplet evaporation. The nanospirals, 60–70 nm in diameter, formed when solvent mixtures of methanol and m-cresol were used. In contrast, spin coating using only methanol as the solvent produced epitaxial films of stripe nanopatterns and using only m-cresol disordered structure. Due to the disparity in vapor pressure between the two solvents, droplets of m-cresol solution remaining on the substrate serve as templates for the self-assembly of carboxylic acid molecules, which in turn allows the visualization of solution droplet evaporation one molecule at a time.

A new approach to the generation of nanoparticle arrays in periodic as well as non-periodic fashions has been discovered based on reduction of oxidized nanoscroll/nanoribbon precursors in the transmission electron microscope (carbothermal reduction) or by hydrogen annealing. Arrays consisting of nickel arsenide nanoparticles of size 3-4 nm have been generated.

This study investigated the adsorption of fibronectin to a rectangular diffraction grating silicon surface with 350 nm period and a corrugation depth of 90 nm. Results demonstrated a significantly positive effect on the fibronectin binding.
