For the stability of composite fibre spinning, the difference in and distribution of the polymer melt velocity during the spinning are among the factors of importance. Based on the basic equation for the control of composite spinning dynamics, boundary conditions are identified and reported in this paper. A mathematical model for the symmetric and asymmetric distribution of the melt flow velocity in the microhole of the spinneret of the composite spinning assembly was developed. The accuracy of the mathematical model was also ascertained. It gives a theoretical basis for the designing of a composite spinning assembly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A large variety of acid-free Asian and Western papers offer objects conservators numerous applications in their work. Not only have objects conservators borrowed this extraordinary material - paper - from the field of paper conservation but they have also adopted many of the well-developed methods and techniques of handling and manipulating it in their 3-D treatments. Paper meets all material criteria in modern conservation practice, including reversibility, strength, inertness, long-term stability, minimal change in color over time, and compatibility with the original artwork. Additional attractive characteristics are that it is light weight, non-toxic, hydrophilic, it conforms well to surfaces, and is not affected by the solvents typically used. Also, the cost of paper varies but is not excessively high. Finally, having the option of using paper in sheet, fiber or powder form - either in a dry or wet state - allows for even wider applications. This article is a survey of the wide range of applications of paper in objects conservation. Its use can have two very different functions. It can serve as a restoration material, thereby remaining with the artwork after the treatment is complete, and as a tool during treatment, thereby not remaining with the artwork after the treatment is complete. Materials sliding on a larger substrate age faster than the substrate itself, but no available model of friction takes into account this aspect. We developed a model based on the memory effect of both the mobile and the plane samples, separately, and characterized by macroscopic geometric measurements (e.g., sliding distances and samples sizes). We studied the contact between fresh paper samples and samples that have already underwent several slidings. Experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement. Finally, we used our model to demonstrate how the existing test methods can lead to differences in the measured forces of friction. Paper properties determine the product application potential and depend on the raw material, pulping conditions, and pulp refining. The aim of this study was to construct mathematical models that predict quantitative relations between the paper density and various mechanical and optical properties of the paper. A dataset of properties of paper handsheets produced with pulps of Acacia dealbata, Acacia melanoxylon, and Eucalyptus globulus beaten at 500, 2500, and 4500 revolutions was used. Unsupervised classification techniques were combined to assess the need to perform separated prediction models for each species, and multivariable regression techniques were used to establish such prediction models. It was possible to develop models with a high goodness of fit using paper density as the independent variable (or predictor) for all variables except tear index and zero-span tensile strength, both dry and wet. An in-plane elasto-plastic material model and a hygroexpansivity-shrinkage model for paper and board are introduced in this paper. The input parameters for both models are fiber orientation anisotropy and dry solids content. These two models, based on experimental results, could be used in an analytical approach to estimate, for example, plastic strain and shrinkage in simple one-dimensional cases, but for studies of the combined and more complicated effects of hygro-elasto-plastic behavior, a numerical finite element model was constructed. The finite element approach also offered possibilities for studying different structural variations of an orthotropic sheet as well as buckling behavior and internal stress situations under local strain differences. A few examples are presented of the effect of the anisotropy and moisture streaks under stretching and drying conditions on strain differences and buckling. The internal stresses were studied through a case in which the drying of different layers occurred at different stages. Both the anisotropy and moisture streaks were capable of rendering the buckling of the sample visible. The permanency of these defects highly depends on several process stages and tension conditions of the sheet, as demonstrated in this paper. The application possibilities of the hygro-elasto-plastic model are diverse, including investigation into several phenomena and defects appearing in drying, converting and printing process conditions. Significant dimensional variations may occur in paper-based materials when subjected to changes in moisture content. Moisture induced deformations are governed by the swelling of individual fibres, which is transferred through inter-fibre bonds to the entire fibrous network. Complex interactions between mechanical and hygro-expansive properties take place in the bonding areas, affecting the overall material response. In most network models, the role of these inter-fibre bonds is not explicitly incorporated. This work presents a periodic meso-structural model for the discrete fibrous network, which considers the free-standing fibre segments and inter-fibre bonds. Despite its simplicity, the reference unit-cell enables the incorporation of relevant micro- and meso-structural features such as network structure, fibres and bond geometry and hygro-elastic properties. The proposed model is solved analytically through a proper homogenization strategy, allowing to recover the paper’s anisotropic hygro-mechanical response in terms of effective elastic constants and effective hygro-expansive coefficients, exploiting the coupling at the meso-structural level between hygroscopic and mechanical behavior. A comparison with experimental results obtained from the literature shows that the presented approach is quite accurate in predicting the overall paper response, thereby revealing the influence of several meso-scale parameters (e.g. fibre orientation, dimensions, mechanical strength). To model advanced 3-D forming strategies for paper materials, the effects of environmental conditions on the mechanical behavior must be quantitatively and qualitatively understood. A tensile test method has been created, verified, and implemented to test paper at various moisture content and temperature levels. Testing results for one type of paper for moisture contents from 6.9 to 13.8 percent and temperatures from 23 to 168 degrees Celsius are presented and discussed. Coupled moisture and temperature effects have been discovered for maximum stress. Uncoupled effects have been discovered for elastic modulus, tangent modulus, hardening modulus, strain at break, tensile energy absorption (TEA), and approximate plastic strain. A hyperbolic tangent function is also utilized which captures the entire one-dimensional stress-strain response of paper. The effects of moisture and temperature on the three coefficients in the hyperbolic tangent function may be assumed to be uncoupled, which may simplify the development of moisture- and temperature-dependent constitutive models. Abstract: Adding slicing to push cutting processes can significantly reduce cutting forces. Creating an appropriate model for the calculation of forces is necessary to completely understand manufacturing processes. In this investigation, a model detailing the cutting forces of stacked thin material using an asymmetrical knife is developed. Equilibrium of forces and frictional effects at the cutting edge are analyzed to determine the components in vertical and horizontal direction of the total cutting force, and their dependency on the slice-push ratio. The friction effects of the new model are based on Coulomb friction. For comparison purposes, an existing shear friction model is extended to discuss the new presented Coulomb friction model. The objective of this research is to understand more fully the out-of-plane auxetic behavior of paper. In the reported research, initial characterization of the auxetic properties of common, commercially available papers is described. The results of these experiments suggest that the auxetic response seen in paper structures is related to the cellulose fiber network structure, as previously suggested, and is related to inter-fiber bonding and fiber organization in the sheet. These results also indicate that further study is needed to understand how materials and processing variables influence auxetic behavior. A mathematical model, attempting to explain auxetic response in an idealized arrangement of fibers is included. Ultimately, the fundamental understanding resulting from this research should lead to new product development opportunities for forest product-based paper materials as well as to the establishment of predictive structure-property relations for auxetic materials using paper as a model system. Abstract: In this work we present a mathematical model describing the coupled heat and moisture transport in paper. The model is solved numerically and the numerical solution is used to study the interdependency of the moisture and temperature distribution in paper. The results show that variation with temperature of the saturated water vapor concentration and the sorption isotherm parameters are both important for inducing moisture desorption. It is also found that for steep relative humidity ramps moisture sorption generates temperature increments that slow down the sorption process itself. The model is also used to study the moisture gradients in a paper sheet inside a printer from Océ Technologies, which contains a warm print surface. The results predict changes in moisture content of only 0.2%, which suggests that no deformations are induced on the printed sheet. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We study the static and dynamic properties of networks of crumpled creases formed in hand crushed sheets of paper. The fractal dimensionalities of crumpling networks in the unfolded (flat) and folded configurations are determined. Some other noteworthy features of crumpling networks are established. The physical implications of these findings are discussed. Specifically, we state that self-avoiding interactions introduce a characteristic length scale of sheet crumpling. A framework to model the crumpling phenomena is suggested. Mechanics of sheet crushing under external confinement is developed. The analysis of Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP) experiments involves mathematical modeling of the fluorescence recovery process. An important feature of FRAP experiments that tends to be ignored in the modeling is that there can be a significant loss of fluorescence due to bleaching during image capture. In this paper, we explicitly include the effects of bleaching during image capture in the model for the recovery process, instead of correcting for the effects of bleaching using reference measurements. Abstract: The migration of components from paper into Tenax® was studied to determine the influence of molecular size and chemical character of the migrant and the influence of paper characteristics in the migration process. The Weibull model was applied because Fick’s 2nd law of diffusion gave poor fits in some cases. The migration pattern depended on the migrants molecular size and was independent of temperature in the studied range. The migration rate decreased with the migrant molecular size. The influence of the migrants character (polarity and vapour pressure) on the migration behaviour was also studied: nonpolar migrants with high vapour pressure presented low relative migration values and polar migrants presented high values of relative migration. Results indicated that the apparent partition coefficient between paper and the simulant Tenax® increased with the migrant vapour pressure and with both the paper grammage and the recycled pulp content. Abstract: A new two-dimensional network model is proposed as a micromechanics model to simulate paper’s failure process due to sequentially breakages of fibers and/or bonds. Paper is approximated as a network composed of fibers any two of which link to each other by their intersecting point, namely so-called bond. Fibers distribute along three particular directions, leading to network’s macro-level isotropy. In the framework of finite element method, nodes correspond to fiber-to-fiber bonds, while elements are fiber segments between every two neighboring nodes and described by Timoshenko beam theory. Element breaks when its equivalent internal tensile stress reaches the tensile strength of fiber. Strength of nodes, i.e. fiber-to-fiber bonds is assumed to be dependant on shearing interaction between fibers, considering the dominant interaction is shearing in a plane problem. Numerical examples show the model’s capacity of reflecting basic failure characteristic in paper. Influences of fiber length and the ratio of fiber strength to bond strength are analyzed in detail. The article discusses a study on the mechanical characteristics of paper packaging. The ecological aspects of paper packaging, such as biodegradability and its low production costs have made these type of packaging widely used. The study used computational modeling, and possible mathematical models, to determine the strength of paper packaging under compression.

Abstract: In this study, the determinability of time related colour changes in prints made using ink that dries on matte coated paper with the offset printing technique and infrared method, has been investigated with artifical neural networks after analysis of the experimental and numerical methods. In the experimental part a ECI 2002 CMYK test scale is printed on a 135g/m2 matte coated. The prints obtained were measured with a spectrophotometer at certain intervals and by converting the reflection data obtained into the CIELAB colour description spectrum, time related changes in printed colours have been determined. In the empirical study however, colour changes in prints made on matte coated paper using inks that dry with the infrared method are modelled numerically. The average deviation has been found to be 0.4%. As a result, artificial neural networks can be used with the aim to digitally calculate time related colour changes in the offset printing system. Abstract  In this paper it is shown that the well known special orthotropy of paper, explained by micromechanical models of complex bodies, actually corresponds to a special case of orthotropy of a plane elastic body. The article presents a conceptual framework using simulation to predict effluent biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) characteristics as a function of improved wastewater treatment. These simulations use equations that describe BOD kinetics. They also able to reproduce trends in f-ratio observed at various pulp and paper facilities and predict BOD reactivity as a function of treatment.

The article focuses on the prediction of the tensile breaking strength, the most commonly used physical property for paper characterization. It develops a novel three-dimensional computational simulator of paper structure to better understand the influence of fiber morphology on paper properties. It also discusses the development of the tensile strength model.

Abstract: The influence of the hydrothermal treatment conditions of rice straw (temperature – 150–190°C , time – 0–20min after reaching the operation temperature – and liquid/solid ratio – 6–8), on the composition of liquid and solid fractions was studied. Polynomial models were found for to reproduce the experimental results with errors less than 6%. Operating to 190°C, 15min and 9 liquid/solid ratio was obtained high values of glucose (1.92g/L), xylose (3.97g/L), arabinose (0.99g/L) and acetic acid (1.96g/L), what allows to save capital when not operating with the maximum time and/or liquid/solid ratio; yield in the solid fraction is 88.1% and lignin content 24.43%. If what it is required to obtain good values of yield (96.46%) and lignin content, is necessary to operate to 150°C, obtaining lower concentrations glucose (1.11%), xylose (2.78%), arabinose (0.56%) and acetic acid (0.39%). Ethanolamine pulping of solid fraction of hydrothermal treatment provides pulp with higher or similar properties to those obtained of pulping rice straw with ethanolamine or soda. The aim of this article is to develop an experiment and a procedure to investigate the restoration of water-damaged paper and archival materials using freeze drying in order to allow a reproducible test and comparison of the influence of different operating conditions on drying time and restored paper quality. Firstly, a reproducible method for the preparation of soaked samples simulating water-damaged paper has been developed. Then, the samples have been freeze-dried in a laboratory-scale apparatus that allowed monitoring the temperature as well as the weight of the samples. The technique of evaporative freezing, which reduces the drying time required, has been used in this case. An innovative procedure for the visualization of the progress of the drying process has been validated, thus allowing the validation of a simple phenomenological model of the time evolution of the ice core volume; in addition, data on the residual moisture of the dried paper sheets in different zones have been given. This paper proposes a new method to improve re performance of intra-field interpolation which is the mos~ important element of deinterlacing method. Traditional edge- based methods were poor at determining accurate edge iirection which decides interpolation performance. The 7roposed method decides the direction and slope of edge based on locally adaptive-thresholded binary image to mprove efficiency and accuracy, and it also increased the ~orizontal size of search window to 15 for better direction ietermination at gentle slope. Compared to traditional edge- based methods, interpolation based on binary image, which is ,`enerated using the proposed method, leads to great erformance improvement. This paper presents an implementation of an ~daptive beamformer in a hands-free unit. The proposec~ ~daptive beamformer suppresses stationary noise an~ nterference sound. The adaptive beamformer and acoustic `cho canceller were implemented in a compact hands-free mit with a low-cost DSP. Abstract: This paper describes hybrid mathematical model which couples the mechanics of the mass/spring model to the acoustic wave propagation model for use in generating the acoustic signal emitted by complex structures of paper fibres under strain. A discussion of the coupling method is presented including remarks on the errors encountered intrinsic to the discretisation scheme. The numerical results of a vibrating rubber band and a vibrating paper fibre are compared to their experimental counterparts. The fundamental frequencies of the acoustic signals are compared showing a close agreement between the experimental and numerical results. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this paper, a finite element procedure is used to study the dynamic behaviour of a paper web in a free span between two rollers, including effects of transport velocity and surrounding air. The paper web is modelled as a three-dimensional orthotropic structure. The influence of air is accounted for by utilizing fluid–solid interaction analyses based on acoustic theory. The contribution of transport velocity is included through gyroscopic matrices and forces. The structural response on harmonic excitations has been studied using linear and non-linear models. Results show that air significantly reduces eigenfrequencies of the web. So called “edge-flutter” is nothing but the result of skew tension profile. Excessive web vibration can be eliminated by adjusting the web tension. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Within our research work we determined the Young's modulus distribution in the paper plane on the basis of results of tensile tests in selected directions. Using mathematical relationships valid for orthotropic materials, the moduli were calculated theoretically. The tensile stiffness orientation angle (TSA), and the TSO and TSI indices were also determined in order to define the deviations of the main axes of orthotrophy in the paper plane as determined by the machine and the cross directions. The calculation results were compared with measured values. They justified the conclusion that paper may be treated as an orthotropic material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study investigates two models—two limiting cases—for the internal heat and mass transfer in a multicylinder dryer: the first model assumes that complete redistribution of heat and moisture in the thickness direction occurs instantaneously. The second model assumes that moisture transfer occurs only by vapor diffusion and that heat transfer takes place by conduction and condensation. The two models are written in dimensionless form, and applied for the same set of standard paper machine data. For basis weights below approximately 0.05 kg d.s./m2 the results are so close that the first, simple model is sufficient. A higher limiting basis weight—approximately 0.16 kg d.s./m2—was previously indicated by comparison of model predictions, assuming the simple model, to extensive sets of machine data from four different paper machines. A mathematical model describing the heat and mass transfer in the dryer section of a paper machine has been applied to the production data from four paper machines. Model predictions for the machine speed are compared to actual machine speeds for a total of 163 data sets. The mathematical model assumes that the temperature and moisture content remain homogeneous in the thickness direction of the sheet. For three paper machines producing paper with basis weights ranging from 0.056 to 0.159 kg d.s./m2 the model predictions are adequate. For the paper machine producing the heaviest grades with basis weights ranging from 0.189 to 0.390 kg d.s./m2 the model predictions are flawed by a systematic error. For low machine velocities/high basis weights the machine velocity is over-predicted and for high machine velocities/low basis weights the machine velocity is under-predicted. This systematic error is caused by the assumption of homogeneous moisture content and temperature within the sheet being severely in error for thick sheets. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The dynamic theory of oligopoly up to the end of the nineteen-fifties consisted mainly of the basic work of economists A. Cournot who showed that a linear duopoly is stable. In 1959 economist R.D. Theocharis proved that Cournot obtained his result by accident, since his model becomes unstable if more than two oligopolists act on the market. Theocharis' paper gave rise to a variety of successive publications, in which the duopoly of Cournot was modified in many respects; especially with regard to the Cournot-behaviour-rule, that consists, strictly speaking, of two assumptions, namely: Assumption C1: Each oligopolist computes his optimal quantity on the basis that the quantities of all his rivals remain unchanged and; Assumption C2: Every seller adjusts his output completely and instantaneously to the one that he derived according to Assumption C1.

A simple linear model is constructed for production, use and recycling of various paper and related products. This model is used to estimate the maximum feasible recycling rate given the current state of pulp and paper technology. Parametric linear programming is used to investigate the effect of the efficiency of collecting, sorting and transporting waste paper on the fraction recycled. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On the basis of a variety of evidence, including the paper with Professor Harold Watts and a paper by the author, the case for seeking and frequently using disaggregated data seemed strong, but one nagging concern remained. Suppose, as seems likely, the microcomponents exhibit different behaviors. In this case it might not be sensible to pool the data and treat it as a single sample from a single universe. This paper copes directly with this issue, and demonstrates the importance of using disaggregated data even when microcomponents. Instead of using a simulation to study aggregation across components with different behaviors, one could have attempted a mathematical deduction of the effects. In order to do this certain simplifying assumptions would need to be introduced in order to make the problem tractable. Another approach to the problem of aggregation is to use data from the real world to fit models at different levels of aggregation, and then to evaluate the relative worth of these models by means of some quantitative measure.
