Maps represent powerful tools to show the spatial variation of a variable in a straightforward manner. A crucial aspect in map rendering for its interpretation by users is the gamut of colours used for displaying data. One part of this problem is linked to the proportion of the human population that is colour blind and, therefore, highly sensitive to colour palette selection. The aim of this paper is to present a function in R - \texttt{cblind.plot} - which enables colour blind people to just enter an image in a coding workflow, simply set their colour blind deficiency type, and immediately get as output a colour blind friendly plot. We will first describe in detail colour blind problems, and then show a step by step example of the function being proposed. While examples exist to provide colour blind people with proper colour palettes, in such cases (i) the workflow include a separate import of the image and the application of a set of colour ramp palettes and (ii) albeit being well documented, there are many steps to be done before plotting an image with a colur blind friendly ramp palette. The function described in this paper (\ttt{cblind.plot}), on the contrary, allows to (i) automatically call the image inside the function without any initial import step and (ii) explicitly refer to the colour blind deficiency type being experienced, to further automatically apply the proper colour ramp palette.

High-resolution bathymetry, seismic reflection, and piston core data from a submarine channel on the western Niger Delta slope demonstrate that thick, coarse-grained, amalgamated sands in the channel thalweg/axis transition to thin, fine-grained, bedded sands and muds in the channel margin. Radiocarbon ages indicate that axis and margin deposits are coeval. Core data show that bed thickness, grain size, and deposition rate strongly decrease with increasing height above channel thalweg and/or distance from channel centerline. A 5 times decrease in bed thickness and 1–2 ψ decrease in grain size are evident over a 20 m elevation change (approximately the elevation difference between axis and margin). A simplified in-channel sedimentation model that solves vertical concentration and velocity profiles of turbidity currents accurately reproduces the vertical trends in grain size and bed thickness shown in the core data set. The close match between data and model suggests that the vertical distribution of grain size and bed thickness shown in this study is widely applicable and can be used to predict grain size and facies variation in data-poor areas (e.g., subsurface cores). This study emphasizes that facies models for submarine channel deposits should recognize that grain-size and thickness trends within contemporaneous axis-margin packages require a change in elevation above the thalweg. The transition from thick-bedded, amalgamated, coarser-grained sands to thin-bedded, nonamalgamated, finer-grained successions is primarily a reflection of a change in elevation. Even a relatively small elevation change (e.g., 1 m) is enough to result in a significant change in grain size, bed thickness, and facies.

We prove that if $T$ is a complete theory with weak elimination of imaginaries, then there is an explicit bijection between strict independence relations for $T$ and strict independence relations for $T^{\text{eq}}$. We use this observation to show that if $T$ is the theory of the Fra\"{i}ss\'{e} limit of finite metric spaces with integer distances, then $T^{\text{eq}}$ has more than one strict independence relation. Data analytics is the process of examining large amounts of varying data types to uncover hidden patterns, unknown correlations and other useful information. The Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Earth Science Data Analytics (ESDA) Cluster was created to facilitate the co-analysis of Earth science data and information. In addition to pioneering the definition of ESDA, the cluster has analyzed and compared data science/data analytics (DS/DA) university curricula with DS/DA techniques and skills necessary to fill the growing demand for DS/DA professionals. Here we identify the techniques utilized and skills needed to perform Earth science DS/DA, and survey University level DS/DA curricula currently available to prepare students for careers in Earth science DS/DA. Earth science DS/DA techniques and skills were identified through community discussions and presentations (including ESIP ESDA Cluster, literature search, discussions with scientists, and perspectives from students). The curricula of 267 DS/DA degree programs from 167 universities were analyzed to determine the DS/DA courses most often taught. Once compiled, this information was then used to identify, analyze, and report on gaps between the professional needs and the academic offerings. This study provides guidelines for both prospective students of Earth science DS/DA in pursuit of their professional career and teachers of Earth science DS/DA. It also serves as a starting point to examine this rapidly changing academic landscape and extrapolate from for future studies. Ultimately, we hope that the results of this study will enable a more holistic consideration of the development of Earth science data science and analytics curricula.

Transport of water, nutrients or energy fluxes in many natural or coupled human-natural systems occurs along different pathways that often have a wide range of transport timescales and might exchange fluxes with each other dynamically (e.g., surface-subsurface). Understanding this type of transport is key to predicting how landscapes will change under changing forcing. Here, we present a general framework for studying transport on a multi-scale coupled-connectivity system, via a multilayer network, which conceptualizes the system as a set of interacting networks, each arranged in a separate layer, and with interactions across layers acknowledged by interlayer links. We illustrate this framework by examining transport in river deltas as a dynamic interaction of flow within river channels and overland flow in the islands, when it is controlled by the flooding level. We show the potential of the framework to answer quantitatively questions related to the characteristic timescale of response in the system.

The aim of this article is to show how certain parabolic theorems follow from their elliptic counterparts. This technique is demonstrated through new proofs of five important theorems in parabolic unique continuation and the regularity theory of parabolic equations and geometric flows. Specifically, we give new proofs of an $L^2$ Carleman estimate for the heat operator, and the monotonicity formulas for the frequency function associated to the heat operator, the two-phase free boundary problem, the flow of harmonic maps, and the mean curvature flow. The proofs rely only on the underlying elliptic theorems and limiting procedures belonging essentially to probability theory. A compactness framework is established for approximate solutions to subsonic-sonic flows governed by the steady full Euler equations for compressible fluids in arbitrary dimension. The existing compactness frameworks for the two-dimensional irrotational case do not directly apply for the steady full Euler equations in higher dimensions. The new compactness framework we develop applies for both non-homentropic and rotational flows. One of our main observations is that the compactness can be achieved by using only natural weak estimates for the mass balance and the vorticity, along with the Bernoulli law and the entropy relation, through a more delicate analysis on the phase space. (now published in "The Depositional Record") Submarine fans are archives of Earth-surface processes and change, recording information about the turbidity currents that construct and sculpt them. The volume and recurrence of turbidity currents are of great interest for geohazard assessment, source-to-sink modeling, and hydrocarbon reservoir characterization. Yet, such dynamics are poorly constrained. This study integrates data from four Quaternary submarine fans to reconstruct the volume and recurrence of the formative turbidity currents. Calculated event volumes vary over four orders of magnitude (10^5 to 10^9 m3), whereas recurrence intervals vary less, from 50 to 650 years. The calculated turbidity-current-event volume magnitudes appear to be related to slope position and basin confinement. Intraslope-fan deposits have small event volumes (~ 10^6 m3) while ponded-fan deposits have very large event volumes (10^8 to 10^9 m3). Deposits in non-ponded, base-of-slope environments have intermediate values (10^7 to 10^8 m3). Sediment bypass in intraslope settings and flow trapping in ponded basins likely accounts for these differences. There seems to be no clear relationship between event recurrence and basin confinement. Weak scaling exists between event volume and source-area characteristics, but sediment storage in fluvial and/or intraslope transfer zones likely complicates these relationships. The methodology and results are also applied to reconstruct the time of deposition of ancient submarine-fan deposits. The volume and recurrence of submarine-fan-building turbidity currents form intermediate values between values measured in submarine canyons and channels (10^8 m3 and >10^3 yr), indicating that small, frequent flows originating in submarine canyons often die out prior to reaching the fan, while rare and very large flows mostly bypass the fan and deposit sediment on the abyssal plain. This partitioning of flow volume and recurrence along the submarine sediment-routing system provides valuable insights for better constraining geohazards, hydrocarbon resources, and the completeness of the stratigraphic record.

Metode yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini adalah pengambilan data dari PDAM Tirta Anoa Kota Kendari untuk kemudian dimodelkan menjadi suatu tabel transportasi agar Metode Vogel dapat diterapkan pada tabel transportasi tersebut untuk mendapatkan biaya minimum, yang tentunya akan membuat keuntungan menjadi maksimum. Dari hasil penelitian yang diperoleh terlihat bahwa PDAM Tirta Anoa Kota Kendari dapat menghemat biaya operasional 0,41 % dari biaya operasional sebelum diterapkan Metode Vogel.

In this paper, a tracer prognostic differential equation related to the marine chemistry HAMOCC model is studied. Recently the present 5 6 7 8 author found that the Navier -Stokes equation has no unique general solution [Geurdes, 2017]. The following question can therefore be justified. Do numerical solutions, found from prognostic equations akin to the Navier Stokes equation, provide unique nutrient distribution information.

In this paper, we consider the hamiltonian formulation of nonholonomic systems with symmetries and study several aspects of the geometry of their reduced almost Poisson brackets, including the integrability of their characteristic distributions. Our starting point is establishing global formulas for the nonholonomic Jacobiators, before and after reduction, which are used to clarify the relationship between reduced nonholonomic brackets and twisted Poisson structures. For certain types of symmetries (generalizing the Chaplygin case), we obtain genuine Poisson structures on the reduced spaces and analyze situations in which the reduced nonholonomic brackets arise by applying a gauge transformation to these Poisson structures. We illustrate our results with mechanical examples, and in particular show how to recover several well-known facts in the special case of Chaplygin symmetries., Comment: 43 pages. A generic class of metamaterials is introduced and is shown to exhibit frequency dependent double negative effective properties. We develop a rigorous method for calculating the frequency intervals where either double negative or double positive effective properties appear and show how these intervals imply the existence of propagating Bloch waves inside sub-wavelength structures. The branches of the dispersion relation associated with Bloch modes are shown to be explicitly determined by the Dirichlet spectrum of the high dielectric phase and the generalized electrostatic spectra of the complement. In this paper we use the notion of slice monogenic functions \cite{slicecss} to define a new functional calculus for an $n$-tuple $T$ of not necessarily commuting operators. This calculus is different from the one discussed in \cite{jefferies} and it allows the explicit construction of the eigenvalue equation for the $n$-tuple $T$ based on a new notion of spectrum for $T$. The Kantor-Koecher-Tits construction associates a Lie algebra to any Jordan algebra. We generalize this construction to include also extensions of the associated Lie algebra. In particular, the conformal realization of so(p+1,q+1) generalizes to so(p+n,q+n), for arbitrary n, with a linearly realized subalgebra so(p,q). We also show that the construction applied to 3x3 matrices over the division algebras R, C, H, O gives rise to the exceptional Lie algebras f4, e6, e7, e8, as well as to their affine, hyperbolic and further extensions., Comment: 6 pages. The aim of this paper is to inter-relate several algebraic and analytic objects, such as real-type algebraic curves, quadrature domains, functions on them and rational matrix functions with special properties, and some objects from Operator Theory, such as vector Toeplitz operators and subnormal operators. Our tools come from operator theory, but some of our results have purely algebraic formulation. We make use of Xia's theory of subnormal operators and of the previous results by the author in this direction. We introduce the notion of $R$-analytic functions. These are definable in an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field $R$ and are locally the restriction of a $K$-differentiable function (defined by Peterzil and Starchenko) where $K=R[\sqrt{-1}]$ is the algebraic closure of $R$. The class of these functions in this general setting exhibits the nice properties of real analytic functions. We also define strongly $R$-analytic functions. These are globally the restriction of a $K$-differentiable function. We consider singularities in the ElectroHydroDynamic equations. In a regime where we are allowed to neglect surface tension, and assuming that the free surface is given by an injective curve and that either the fluid velocity or the electric field satisfies a certain non-degeneracy condition, we prove that either the fluid region or the gas region is asymptotically a cusp. Our proofs depend on a combination of monotonicity formulas and a non-vanishing result by Caffarelli and Friedman. We provide a complete and rigorous description of phase transitions for kinetic models of self-propelled particles interacting through alignment. These models exhibit a competition between alignment and noise. Both the alignment frequency and noise intensity depend on a measure of the local alignment. We show that, in the spatially homogeneous case, the phase transition features (number and nature of equilibria, stability, convergence rate, phase diagram, hysteresis) are totally encoded in how the ratio between the alignment and noise intensities depend on the local alignment. In the present paper, we handle the problem of finding a hypersurface family from a given asymptotic curve in R^4. Using the Frenet frame of the given asymptotic curve, we express the hypersurface as a linear combination of this frame and analyze the necessary and sufficient conditions for that curve to be asymptotic. By defining a fat point subscheme of $P^2$ to be a 0-dimensional subscheme defined by a sheaf of integrally closed ideals one extends the notion of fat point subschemes to allow infinitely near points. With this notion of fat points, this preprint determines the number of generators in each degree in a minimal homogeneous set of generators for the homogeneous ideal defining any fat point subscheme supported at points of any plane conic, smooth or not. We study qualitative properties of positive solutions of noncooperative, possibly nonvariational, elliptic systems. We obtain new classification and Liouville type theorems in the whole Euclidean space, as well as in half-spaces, and deduce a priori estimates and existence of positive solutions for related Dirichlet problems. We significantly improve the known results for a large class of systems involving a balance between repulsive and attractive terms. We introduce what we call the second-order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle, which allows to replace local functionals of a conservative, one-dimensional stochastic process by a possibly nonlinear function of the conserved quantity. This replacement opens the way to obtain nonlinear stochastic evolutions as the limit of the fluctuations of the conserved quantity around stationary states. As an application of this second-order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle, we introduce the notion of energy solutions of the KPZ and stochastic Burgers equations. Under minimal assumptions, we prove that the density fluctuations of one-dimensional, stationary, weakly asymmetric, conservative particle systems are sequentially compact and that any limit point is given by energy solutions of the stochastic Burgers equation. We also show that the fluctuations of the height function associated to these models are given by energy solutions of the KPZ equation in this sense. Unfortunately, we lack a uniqueness result for these energy solutions. We conjecture these solutions to be unique, and we show some regularity results for energy solutions of the KPZ/Burgers equation, supporting this conjecture., Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)

We show that the local equivalence problem for second-order ordinary differential equations under point transformations is completely characterized by differential invariants of order at most 10 and that this upper bound is sharp. We analyze the extendability of the solutions to a certain second order differential equation on a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, which is defined by a general class of forces (both prescribed on $M$ or depending on the velocity). The results include the general time-dependent anholonomic case, and further refinements for autonomous systems or forces derived from a potential are obtained. These extend classical results for Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems. Using matrix iterations of ccc posets, we prove the consistency with ZFC of some cases where the cardinals on the right hand side of Cichon's diagram take two or three arbitrary values (two regular values, the third one with uncountable cofinality). Poroelasticity theory models the dynamics of porous, fluid-saturated media. It was pioneered by Maurice Biot in the 1930s through 1960s, and has applications in several fields, including geophysics and modeling of in vivo bone. A wide variety of methods have been used to model poroelasticity, including finite difference, finite element, pseudospectral, and discontinuous Galerkin methods. In this work we use a Cartesian-grid high-resolution finite volume method to numerically solve Biot's equations in the time domain for orthotropic materials, with the stiff relaxation source term in the equations incorporated using operator splitting. This class of finite volume method has several useful properties, including the ability to use wave limiters to reduce numerical artifacts in the solution, ease of incorporating material inhomogeneities, low memory overhead, and an explicit time-stepping approach. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first use of high-resolution finite volume methods to model poroelasticity. The solution code uses the CLAWPACK finite volume method software, which also includes block-structured adaptive mesh refinement in its AMRCLAW variant. We present convergence results for known analytic plane wave solutions, achieving second-order convergence rates outside of the stiff regime of the system. Our convergence rates are degraded in the stiff regime, but we still achieve similar levels of error on the finest grids examined. We also demonstrate good agreement against other numerical results from the literature. In general, for higher order elliptic equations and boundary value problems like the biharmonic equation and the linear clamped plate boundary value problem neither a maximum principle nor a comparison principle or -- equivalently -- a positivity preserving property is available. The problem is rather involved since the clamped boundary conditions prevent the boundary value problem {from} being reasonably written as a system of second order boundary value problems. It is shown that, on the other hand, for bounded smooth domains $\Omega \subset\mathbb{R}^n$, the negative part of the corresponding Green's function is "small" when compared with its singular positive part, provided $n\ge 3$. Moreover, the biharmonic Green's function in balls $B\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ under Dirichlet (i.e. clamped) boundary conditions is known explicitly and is positive. It has been known for some time that positivity is preserved under small regular perturbations of the domain, if $n=2$. In the present paper, such a stability result is proved for $n\ge 3$. In this paper, we study a (p-adic) geometric analogue for abelian varieties over a function field of characteristic p of the cyclotomic Iwasawa theory and the non-commutative Iwasawa theory for abelian varieties over a number field initiated by Mazur and Coates respectively. We will prove some analogue of the principal results obtained in the case over a number field and we study new phenomena which did not happen in the case of number field case. We propose also a conjecture which might be considered as a counterpart of the principal conjecture in the case over a number field. \par This is a preprint which is distributed since 2005 which is still in the process of submision. We study stochastic billiards on general tables: a particle moves according to its constant velocity inside some domain ${\mathcal D} \subset {\mathbb R}^d$ until it hits the boundary and bounces randomly inside according to some reflection law. We assume that the boundary of the domain is locally Lipschitz and almost everywhere continuously differentiable. The angle of the outgoing velocity with the inner normal vector has a specified, absolutely continuous density. We construct the discrete time and the continuous time processes recording the sequence of hitting points on the boundary and the pair location/velocity. We mainly focus on the case of bounded domains. Then, we prove exponential ergodicity of these two Markov processes, we study their invariant distribution and their normal (Gaussian) fluctuations. Of particular interest is the case of the cosine reflection law: the stationary distributions for the two processes are uniform in this case, the discrete time chain is reversible though the continuous time process is quasi-reversible. For regular one-dimensional variational problems, Ball and Nadirashvilli introduced the notion of the universal singular set of a Lagrangian L and established its topological negligibility. This set is defined to be the set of all points in the plane through which the graph of some absolutely continuous L-minimizer passes with infinite derivative. Motivated by Tonelli's partial regularity results, the question of the size of the universal singular set in measure naturally arises. Here we show that universal singular sets are characterized by being essentially purely unrectifiable -- that is, they intersect most Lipschitz curves in sets of zero length and that any compact purely unrectifiable set is contained within the universal singular set of some smooth Lagrangian with given superlinear growth. This gives examples of universal singular sets of Hausdorff dimension two, filling the gap between previously known one-dimensional examples and Sychev's result that universal singular sets are Lebesgue null. We show that some smoothness of the Lagrangian is necessary for the topological size estimate, and investigate the relationship between growth of the Lagrangian and the existence of (pathological) rectifiable pieces in the universal singular set. We study the real Monge-Amp\`ere equation in two and three dimensions, both from the point of view of the SYZ conjecture, where solutions give rise to semi-flat Calabi-Yau's and in affine differential geometry, where solutions yield parabolic affine sphere hypersurfaces. We find explicit examples, connect the holomorphic function representation to Hitchin's description of special Lagrangian moduli space, and construct the developing map explicitly for a singularity corresponding to the type $I_n$ elliptic fiber (after hyper-K\"ahler rotation). Following Baues and Cort\'es, we show that various types of metric cones over two-dimensional elliptic affine spheres generate solutions of the Monge-Amp\`ere equation in three dimensions. We then prove a local and global existence theorem for an elliptic affine two-sphere metric with prescribed singularities. The metric cone over the two-sphere minus three points yields a parabolic affine sphere with singularities along a "Y"-shaped locus. This gives a semi-flat Calabi-Yau metric in a neighborhood of the "Y" vertex. In the erratum, we correct a gap in the solution of the elliptic affine sphere equation (with the small caveat that a parameter in the equation, the cubic differential, must be smaller than we assumed before). The new proof still allows us to construct semi-flat Calabi-Yau metrics in a neighborhood of the "Y" vertex by appealing to the result of Baues-Cort\'es. We study rational curves on algebraic varieties, especially on normal affine varieties endowed with a $\C^*$-action. For varieties with an isolated singularity, we show that the presence of sufficiently many rational curves outside the singular point strongly affects the character of the singularity. This provides an explanation of classical results due to H.A. Schwartz and G.H. In this work we consider the identifiability of two coefficients $a(u)$ and $c(x)$ in a quasilinear elliptic partial differential equation from observation of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We use a linearization procedure due to Isakov [On uniqueness in inverse problems for semilinear parabolic equations. Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 1993] and special singular solutions to first determine $a(0)$ and $c(x)$ for $x \in \Omega$. The paper continues the discussion of symplectic aspects of Picard-Lefschetz theory begun in "Vanishing cycles and mutation" (this archive). There we explained how to associate to a suitable fibration over a two-dimensional disc a triangulated category, the "derived directed Fukaya category" which describes the structure of the vanishing cycles. The present second part serves two purposes. Firstly, it contains various kinds of algebro-geometric examples, including the "mirror manifold" of the projective plane. We propose efficient preconditioning algorithms for an eigenvalue problem arising in quantum physics, namely the computation of a few interior eigenvalues and their associated eigenvectors for the largest sparse real and symmetric indefinite matrices of the Anderson model of localization. We compare the Lanczos algorithm in the 1987 implementation by Cullum and Willoughby with the shift-and-invert techniques in the implicitly restarted Lanczos method and in the Jacobi-Davidson method. Our preconditioning approaches for the shift-and-invert symmetric indefinite linear system are based on maximum weighted matchings and algebraic multilevel incomplete $LDL^T$ factorizations. These techniques can be seen as a complement to the alternative idea of using more complete pivoting techniques for the highly ill-conditioned symmetric indefinite Anderson matrices. We demonstrate the effectiveness and the numerical accuracy of these algorithms. Our numerical examples reveal that recent algebraic multilevel preconditioning solvers can accelerative the computation of a large-scale eigenvalue problem corresponding to the Anderson model of localization by several orders of magnitude., Comment: 9 .eps figures, submitted to SIAM J. We prove that the knot invariant induced by a $\Bbb Z$-homology 3-sphere invariant of order $\leq k$ in Ohtsuki's sense, where $k\geq 4$, is of order $\leq k-2$. The method developed in our computation shows that there is no $\Bbb Z$-homology 3-sphere invariant of order 5. This result agrees with a conjecture of Rozansky based on physical predictions about the asymptotic behavior of Witten's Chern-Simons path integral., 14 pages, amslatex, 9 figures not included. We study the random geometry of first passage percolation on the complete graph equipped with independent and identically distributed edge weights, continuing the program initiated by Bhamidi and van der Hofstad [9]. We describe our results in terms of a sequence of parameters $(s_n)_{n\geq 1}$ that quantifies the extreme-value behavior of small weights, and that describes different universality classes for first passage percolation on the complete graph. We consider both $n$-independent as well as $n$-dependent edge weights. The simplest example consists of edge weights of the form $E^{s_n}$, where $E$ is an exponential random variable with mean 1. In this paper, we investigate the case where $s_n\rightarrow \infty$, and focus on the local neighborhood of a vertex. We establish that the smallest-weight tree of a vertex locally converges to the invasion percolation cluster on the Poisson weighted infinite tree. In addition, we identify the scaling limit of the weight of the smallest-weight path between two uniform vertices., This is the first paper in a series of two papers on "Long paths in first passage percolation on the complete graph". Let $(R,\fm)$ be a local ring and let $C$ be a semidualizing $R$--module. In this paper, we are concerned in $C$--injective and $G_{C}$--injective dimensions of certain local cohomology modules of $R$. Firstly, the injective dimension of $C$ and the above quantities of dimensions is compared. Then, as an application of the above comparisons, a characterization of a dualizing module of $R$ is given. Finally, it is shown that if $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension $d$ such that $\H_{\fm}^{d}(C)$ is $C$--injective, then $R$ is Gorernstein. This paper reviews some major episodes in the history of the spatial isomorphism problem of dynamical systems theory (ergodic theory). In particular, by analysing, both systematically and in historical context, a hitherto unpublished letter written in 1941 by John von Neumann to Stanislaw Ulam, this paper clarifies von Neumann's contribution to discovering the relationship between spatial isomorphism and spectral isomorphism. The main message of the paper is that von Neumann's argument described in his letter to Ulam is the very first proof that spatial isomorphism and spectral isomorphism are not equivalent because spectral isomorphism is weaker than spatial isomorphism: von Neumann shows that spectrally isomorphic ergodic dynamical systems with mixed spectra need not be spatially isomorphic., Comment: Forthcoming in: Archive for History of Exact Sciences. In this paper we explore the geometry and topology of cohomogeneity one manifolds, i.e. manifolds with a group action whose principal orbits are hypersurfaces. We show that the principal group action of every principal SO(3) and SO(4) bundle over S^4 extends to a cohomogeneity one action. As a consequence we prove that every vector bundle and every sphere bundle over S^4 has a complete metric with non-negative curvature. It is well known that 15 of the 27 exotic spheres in dimension 7 can be written as S^3 bundles over S^4 in infinitely many ways, and hence we obtain infinitely many non-negatively curved metrics on these exotic spheres. A further consequence will be that there are infinitely many almost free actions by SO(3) on S^7, i.e. all isotropy groups are finite. These actions preserve the Hopf fibration S^3 -> S^7 -> S^4 but do not extend to the disc D^8. This paper is devoted to obtain the one-dimensional group invariant solutions of the two-dimensional Ricci flow ((2D) Rf) equation. By classifying the orbits of the adjoint representation of the symmetry group on its Lie algebra, the optimal system of one-dimensional subalgebras of the ((2D) Rf) equation is obtained. For each class, we will find the reduced equation by the method of similarity reduction. By solving these reduced equations, we will obtain new sets of group invariant solutions for the ((2D) Rf) equation., Comment: 6 pages

A Souslin algebra is a complete Boolean algebra whose main features are ruled by a tight combination of an antichain condition with an infinite distributive law. The present article divides into two parts. In the first part a representation theory for the complete and atomless subalgebras of Souslin algebras is established (building on ideas of Jech and Jensen). With this we obtain some basic results on the possible types of subalgebras and their interrelation. The second part begins with a review of some generalizations of results from descriptive set theory concerning Baire category which are then used in non-trivial Souslin tree constructions that yield Souslin algebras with a remarkable subalgebra structure. For a class of systems of semi-linear elliptic equations, including \[ -\Delta u_i=f_i(x,u_i) - \beta u_i\sum_{j\neq i}a_{ij}u_j^p,\qquad i=1,\dots,k, \] for $p=2$ (variational-type interaction) or $p = 1$ (symmetric-type interaction), we prove that uniform $L^\infty$ boundedness of the solutions implies uniform boundedness of their Lipschitz norm as $\beta \to +\infty$, that is, in the limit of strong competition. This extends known quasi-optimal regularity results and covers the optimal case for this class of problems.
