To evaluate the computed tomography (CT) attenuation values, background noise, arterial depiction, and image quality in whole-body dual-energy CT angiography (DECTA) at 40 keV with a reduced iodine dose using deep-learning image reconstruction (DLIR) and compare them with hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR).Whole-body DECTA with a reduced iodine dose (200 mg iodine/kg) was performed in 22 patients, and DECTA data at 1.25-mm section thickness with 50% overlap were reconstructed at 40 keV using 40% adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction with Veo (hybrid-IR group), and DLIR at medium and high levels (DLIR-M and DLIR-H groups). The CT attenuation values of the thoracic and abdominal aortas and iliac artery and background noise were measured. Arterial depiction and image quality on axial, multiplanar reformatted (MPR), and volume-rendered (VR) images were assessed by two readers. Quantitative and qualitative parameters were compared between the hybrid-IR, DLIR-M, and DLIR-H groups.The vascular CT attenuation values were almost comparable between the three groups (p=0.013-0.97), but the background noise was significantly lower in the DLIR-H group than in the hybrid-IR and DLIR-M groups (p0.001). The arterial depictions on axial and MPR images and in almost all arteries on VR images were comparable (p=0.14-1). The image quality of axial, MPR, and VR images was significantly better in the DLIR-H group (p0.001-0.015).DLIR significantly reduced background noise and improved image quality in DECTA at 40 keV compared with hybrid-IR, while maintaining the arterial depiction in almost all arteries.

Background The bolus-tracking technique from single-energy CT has been applied to dual-energy CT (DECT) without optimization or validation. Further optimization is imperative because of a paucity of literature and differences in the attenuation profile of virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs). Purpose To determine the optimal trigger threshold with bolus-tracking technique for DECT angiography (DECTA) in a phantom study and assess the feasibility of an optimized threshold for bolus-tracking technique in DECTA at 40 keV with a 50% reduced iodine dose in human participants. Materials and Methods A phantom study with rapid kilovoltage-switching DECT was performed to determine the optimal threshold for each kiloelectron-volt VMI. In a prospective study, consecutive participants who underwent whole-body CT angiography (CTA) from August 2018 to July 2019 were randomized into three groups: single-energy CTA (SECTA) with standard iodine dose (600 mg of iodine per kilogram), DECTA with 50% reduced iodine dose (300 mg of iodine per kilogram) by using a conventional threshold, and DECTA with 300 mg of iodine per kilogram by using an optimized threshold. A trigger threshold of 100 HU at 120 kVp was used as a reference for comparison. Injected iodine doses and aortic CT numbers were compared among the three groups using Kruskal-Wallis test. Results Ninety-six participants (mean age ± standard deviation, 72 years ± 9; 80 men) were evaluated (32 participants in each group). The optimized threshold for VMIs at 40 keV was 30 HU. The median iodine dose was lower in the optimized DECTA group (13 g) compared with conventional DECTA (19 g) and SECTA (26 g) groups (P < .017 for each comparison). The median aortic CT numbers were higher in the order corresponding to conventional DECTA (655-769 HU), optimized DECTA (543-610 HU), and SECTA (343-359 HU) groups (P < .001). Conclusion The optimized trigger threshold of 30 HU for bolus-tracking technique during dual-energy CT angiography at 40 keV achieved lower iodine load while maintaining aortic enhancement. ©RSNA, 2021 Online supplemental material is available for this article. Pancreatic gastrinoma is a rare pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor with an incidence of about 0.5–21.5 cases per million people worldwide. The most common sites are the duodenum (75%), pancreas (20%), and other organs (5%). Gastrinomas are malignant in about 60–90% of cases (1-5). Malignant gastrinomas originating beneath the duodenal mucosa often metastasize to the liver, even if the tumor diameter is ≤1 cm. Therefore, in patients with gastrinoma and Zollinger–Ellison syndrome, it is important to determine the number and site(s) of gastrinoma(s), as well as the presence or absence of liver metastases. However, the detection sensitivity of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging is about 10–50%, that of angiography is 20–50%, and that of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy is 30–70%. Purpose The purpose of the study was to elucidate the usefulness of a dose evaluation method for reducing late genitourinary (GU) toxicity in high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) of prostate cancer. Methods and Materials GU toxicity was scored in accordance with the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.0. The prostatic urethra was divided into three segments (base = B, midgland = M, apex = A), which were subclassified into seven subgroups (B, M, A, BM, BA, MA, BMA) using a D10% color map of the urethra. Significance testing was conducted on urethral D0.1% and D10% among the seven subgroups. Grade Results Data of 174 patients with localized prostate cancer treated with HDR-BT combined with external beam radiotherapy between November 2011 and July 2014 were analyzed retrospectively. Median age was 74 (53–84) years, and median followup period was 44 (6–69) months. The number of Grade Conclusions A high-dose-area evaluation method using a urethral D10% color map may be helpful in reducing late GU toxicity in HDR-BT for prostate cancer.

To evaluate the feasibility and safety of n-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA)–Lipiodol–Iopamidol (NLI) as a liquid embolic material. In vitro, the ratio of NLI components was adjusted and the configuration of the mixtures was assessed visually in saline. In vivo, 14 wide-necked aneurysms were created on the common carotid and external iliac arteries of four female swine. Under balloon occlusion, 12 aneurysms were embolized with NLI prepared at a NBCA–Lipidol–Iopamidol ratio of 2:3:1 (NLI231), and two were embolized with NBCA–Lipiodol (NL) prepared at a NBCA–Lipiodol ratio of 1:2 (NL12) as a trial group. We performed angiography to evaluate the effectiveness of embolization and adhesion of the embolic material to the balloons or microcatheters. In vitro, NLI231 (33% NBCA) was considered to be the optimal ratio for aneurysm embolization based on its configuration and stability. In vivo, embolization using NLI231 was successful and no adhesion between the embolic material and the balloons or microcatheters was observed in all 12 aneurysms. Embolization with NL12 was impossible in the other two aneurysms due to leakage and adhesion of NL. The configuration of NLI changed at each ratio. NLI231 is a feasible and safe liquid embolic material for balloon-assisted embolization of wide-necked aneurysms in swine.

Objectives To investigate neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the uterine cervix cases for MRI features and staging, as well as pathological correlations and survival. Results FIGO was I in 42, II in 14, III in 1, and IV in 5 patients. T2-weighted MRI showed homogeneous slightly high signal intensity and obvious restricted diffusion (ADC map, low intensity; DWI, high intensity) throughout the tumor in most cases, and mild enhancement in two-thirds. In 50 patients who underwent a radical hysterectomy and lymphadenectomy without neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), intrapelvic T staging by MRI overall accuracy was 88.0% with reference to pathology staging, while patient-based sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for metastatic pelvic lymph node detection was 38.5%, 100%, and 83.3%, respectively. During a mean follow-up period of 45.6 months (range 4.3-151.0 months), 28 patients (45.2%) experienced recurrence and 24 (38.7%) died. Three-year progression-free and overall survival rates for FIGO I, II, III, and IV were 64.3% and 80.9%, 50% and 64.3%, 0% and 0%, and 0% and 0%, respectively. Materials and methods Sixty-two patients with histologically surgery-proven uterine cervical NEC were enrolled. Twelve received NAC. Clinical data, pathological findings, and pretreatment pelvic MRI findings were retrospectively reviewed. Thirty-two tumors were pure NEC and 30 mixed with other histotypes. The NECs were small cell type (41), large cell type (18), or a mixture of both (3). Conclusions Homogeneous lesion texture with obvious restricted diffusion throughout the tumor are features suggestive of cervical NEC. Our findings show that MRI is reliable for T staging of cervical NEC.

To compare the detectability of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and liver metastases between Gd-EOB-DTPA- and extracellular contrast materials (ECCMs) contrast-enhanced MR imaging contrast. Two hundred seventy-two patients with suspected pancreatic disease underwent Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MR imaging (EOB group, n = 79) or ECCMs-enhanced MR imaging (ECCM group, n = 193). The ECCM group were administered the following contrast agents: Gd-DTPA (n = 158), Gd-BT-DO3A (n = 28), Gd-DOTA (n = 5), and Gd-DTPA-BMA (n = 2). Signal intensities of pancreatic parenchyma, paraspinal muscle, PDAC (if present), and background noise were measured. The signal intensity ratio (SIR) of the pancreas and tumor-to-pancreas contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were also calculated. If present, the conspicuity of PDAC was evaluated with the arterial dominant phase images. Liver metastases, if present, were also evaluated for all sequences. Purpose: To compare the diagnostic value of mono-exponential, bi-exponential, and stretched exponential diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for differentiating benign and malignant hepatic lesions. Methods: This prospective study was approved by our Institutional Review Board and the patients provided written informed consent. Magnetic resonance imaging was acquired for 56 patients with suspected liver disease. This identified 90 focal liver lesions with a maximum diameter >10 mm, of which 47 were benign and 43 were malignant. Using home-built software, two radiologists measured the DWI parameters of hepatic lesions for three models: the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) from a mono-exponential model; the true diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (f) from a bi-exponential model; and the distributed diffusion coefficient (DDC) and water molecular diffusion heterogeneity index (α) from a stretched exponential model. The parameters were compared between benign and malignant hepatic lesions. Results: ADC, D, D*, f, and DDC values were significantly lower for malignant hepatic lesions than for benign lesions (P < 0.0001–0.03). Although logistic regression analysis demonstrated that DDC was the only statistically significant parameter for differentiating benign and malignant lesions (P = 0.039), however, the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve for differentiating benign and malignant lesions were comparable between ADC (0.98) and DDC (0.98) values. Conclusion: DDC values obtained from the stretched exponential model could be also used as a quantitative imaging biomarker for differentiating benign and malignant hepatic lesions, however, the diagnostic performance was comparable with ADC values.

Background Tumor hypoxia and glycolysis have been recognized as determinant factors characterizing tumor aggressiveness in malignant gliomas. To clarify in vivo hypoxia and glucose metabolism in relation to isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutation and chromosome 1p and 19q (1p/19q) codeletion status, we retrospectively analyzed hypoxia as assessed by positron emission tomography (PET) with [18F]-fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) and glucose metabolism as assessed by PET with [18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) in newly diagnosed malignant gliomas. Methods In total, 87 patients with newly diagnosed supratentorial malignant (WHO grade III and IV) gliomas were enrolled in this study. They underwent PET studies with FMISO and FDG before surgery. The molecular features and histopathological diagnoses based on the 2016 WHO classification were determined using surgical specimens. Maximal tumor-to-normal ratio (TNR) was calculated for FDG PET, and maximal tumor-to-blood SUV ratio (TBR) was calculated for FMISO PET. The PET uptake values in relation to IDH mutation and 1p/19q codeletion status were statistically analyzed. Results In all tumors and malignant astrocytomas, the median FMISO TBR in IDH-wildtype tumors was significantly higher than that in IDH-mutant tumors (P P IDH-wildtype tumors tended to be higher than that in IDH-mutant tumors, but the difference was not statistically significant. In WHO grade III anaplastic astrocytomas, there were no significant differences in median FMISO TBR or FDG TNR between IDH-mutant and IDH-wildtype tumors. In IDH-mutant WHO grade III anaplastic gliomas, there were no significant differences in median FMISO TBR or FDG TNR between anaplastic astrocytomas and anaplastic oligodendrogliomas. Conclusions Tumor hypoxia as assessed by FMISO PET was informative for prediction of the IDH mutation status in newly diagnosed malignant gliomas. However, the accuracy of the discrimination was not satisfactory for clinical application. On the other hand, glucose metabolism as assessed by FDG PET could not differentiate the IDH-mutant status. Moreover, PET studies using FMISO and FDG could not predict IDH mutation and 1p/19q codeletion status in WHO grade III tumors.

To evaluate the correlation between HeF obtained from gadoxetic acid-enhanced MR imaging and clinical biomarkers for the assessment of liver function. This prospective study was approved by our Institutional Review Board, and written informed consent was obtained from the patients. We recruited 48 patients carrying a known or suspected liver disease to undergo gadoxetic acid-enhanced MR imaging. The new model of the HeF was calculated from ΔR1 values of the liver and spleen. The HeF, quantitative liver-to-spleen contrast ratio (Q-LSC), and ΔT1 value (the reduction rate of the T1 value between the pre- and post-contrast images) were compared with the Child–Pugh and end-stage liver disease (MELD) scores. Among 48 patients, 40 were in Child–Pugh class A and 8 were in class B. The median HeF (P = 0.0001), Q-LSC (P = 0.015), and ΔT1 value (P = 0.0023) in patients in Child–Pugh class A were significantly higher than those in class B. The sensitivities, specificities, and area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curves for differentiating Child–Pugh class A and B were 95.0%, 87.5%, and 0.93 in the HeF; 77.5%, 75.0%, and 0.78 in the Q-LSC; and 57.5%, 100.0%, and 0.84 in the ΔT1 value, respectively. To evaluate the feasibility of optimized integrated combination of compressed sensing and parallel imaging technique (prototype Compressed SENSE) in gadoxetic acid-enhanced dynamic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.Sixty-one patients underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced dynamic imaging using enhanced T1 high-resolution isotropic volume excitation (eTHRIVE) with the Compressed SENSE (CS-eTHRIVE; C SENSE factor, 3.4; acquisition time, 10 s). Results were compared with 61 propensity score-matched patients who underwent conventional eTHRIVE (eTHRIVE; acquisition time, 20 s). For quantitative image analyses, signal intensity ratio (SIR) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), coefficient of variation (CV) of liver parenchyma were calculated in each dynamic phase. For qualitative image analyses, two radiologists rated the homogeneity of liver parenchyma, sharpness of liver edge and left external lobe, motion artifacts, and overall image quality in each dynamic phase using a five-point scale.SIRs of liver parenchyma with CS-eTHRIVE were significantly higher than with eTHRIVE in the hepatic arterial phase (HAP) (1.70 vs. 1.52) and transitional phase (TP) (2.18 vs. 2.06) (P ≤ 0.030). SNR of liver parenchyma were comparable between the two sequences in all phases. CV of liver parenchyma in HAP with eTHRIVE (0.079) was significantly higher than with CS-eTHRIVE (0.065) (P 0.001). Motion artifacts were significantly reduced with CS-eTHRIVE compared with eTHRIVE in all phases (P ≤ 0.005). The appearance ratio of extensive motion artifacts in HAP with CS-eTHRIVE (0/61; 0%) were significantly reduced compared with eTHRIVE (4/61; 6.6%) (P = 0.042). Overall image quality with CS-eTHRIVE was significantly better than with eTHRIVE in all phases (P ≤ 0.039).CS-eTHRIVE compared with eTHRIVE effectively reduced the acquisition time and extensive motion artifacts without degradation of image quality.

PURPOSE To compare four free-breathing scan techniques for gadoxetic acid-enhanced hepatobiliary phase imaging with conventional breath-hold scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS Gadoxetic acid-enhanced hepatobiliary phase imaging with six image acquisition sets performed in 50 patients. Image acquisition sets included fat-suppressed 3D T1-weighted turbo field echo with free-breathing pseudo-golden-angle radial stack-of-stars (FBRS) acquisition, FBRS with track (FBRST), FBRS with gate and track (FBRSG&T), thin-slice FBRS with gate and track (thin-slice FBRSG&T), free-breathing Cartesian acquisition (CartesianFB), and breath-hold Cartesian acquisition (CartesianBH). Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and image quality compared to the six-image acquisition sets. RESULTS Signal-to-noise ratio and CNR were significantly higher in FBRS, FBRST, FBRSG&T, and thin-slice FBRSG&T than in CartesianFB and CartesianBH (P < 0.001). Based on sharpness, motion artifacts, visibility of intrahepatic vessels, and overall image quality, thin-slice FBRSG&T had the highest image quality followed by CartesianBH and FBRSG&T (P < 0.001). Severe motion artifacts were observed in 25 patients in CartesianFB and three patients in CartesianBH, whereas image quality remained above the acceptable range in FBRSG&T, FBRST, FBRS, and thin-slice FBRSG&T in all cases. CONCLUSION Thin-slice FBRSG&T demonstrated excellent image quality compared with conventional CartesianBH in gadoxetic acid-enhanced hepatobiliary phase imaging. It can be apply to supplemental sequences of patients with unstable breath holding.

Objectives: To determine the optimal scan delay corresponding to individual hemodynamic status for pancreatic parenchymal phase in dynamic contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen. Methods: One hundred and fourteen patients were included in this retrospective study (69 males and 45 females; mean age, 67.9 ± 12.1 years; range, 39–87 years). These patients underwent abdominal dynamic contrast-enhanced CT between November 2019 and May 2020. We calculated and recorded the time from contrast material injection to the bolus-tracking trigger of 100 Hounsfield unit (HU) at the abdominal aorta (s) (TimeTRIG) and scan delay from the bolus-tracking trigger to the initiation of pancreatic parenchymal phase scanning (s) (TimeSD). The scan delay ratio (SDR) was defined by dividing the TimeSD by TimeTRIG. Non-linear regression analysis was conducted to assess the association between CT number of the pancreas and SDR and to reveal the optimal SDR, which was ≥120 HU in pancreatic parenchyma. Results: The non-linear regression analysis showed a significant association between CT number of the pancreas and the SDR (p < 0.001). The mean TimeTRIG and TimeSD were 16.1 s and 16.8 s, respectively. The SDR to peak enhancement of the pancreas (123.5 HU) was 1.00. An SDR between 0.89 and 1.18 shows an appropriate enhancement of the pancreas (≥120 HU). Conclusion: The CT number of the pancreas peaked at an SDR of 1.00, which means TimeSD should be approximately the same as TimeTRIG to obtain appropriate pancreatic parenchymal phase images in dynamic contrast-enhanced CT with bolus-tracking method. Advances in knowledge: The hemodynamic state is different in each patient; therefore, scan delay from the bolus-tracking trigger should also vary based on the time from contrast material injection to the bolus-tracking trigger. This is necessary to obtain appropriate late hepatic arterial or pancreatic parenchymal phase images in dynamic contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen.

To evaluate the image quality and iodine concentration (IC) measurements in pancreatic protocol dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) reconstructed using deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) and compare them with those of images reconstructed using hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR).The local institutional review board approved this prospective study. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants. Thirty consecutive participants with pancreatic cancer (PC) underwent pancreatic protocol DECT for initial evaluation. DECT data were reconstructed at 70 keV using 40% adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-Veo (hybrid-IR) and DLIR at medium and high levels (DLIR-M and DLIR-H, respectively). The diagnostic acceptability and conspicuity of PC were qualitatively assessed using a 5-point scale. IC values of the abdominal aorta, pancreas, PC, liver, and portal vein; standard deviation (SD); and coefficient of variation (CV) were calculated. Qualitative and quantitative parameters were compared between the hybrid-IR, DLIR-M, and DLIR-H groups.The diagnostic acceptability and conspicuity of PC were significantly better in the DLIR-M group compared with those in the other groups (p.001-.001). The IC values of the anatomical structures were almost comparable between the three groups (p = .001-.9). The SD of IC values was significantly lower in the DLIR-H group (p.001) and resulted in the lowest CV (p.001-.002) compared with those in the hybrid-IR and DLIR-M groups.DLIR could significantly improve image quality and reduce the variability of IC values than could hybrid-IR.Image quality and conspicuity of pancreatic cancer were the best in DLIR-M. DLIR significantly reduced background noise and improved SNR and CNR. The variability of iodine concentration was reduced in DLIR.

Objectives: To assess the feasibility of whole-body dual-energy computed tomographic angiography (DECTA) at 40 keV with 50% reduced iodine dose protocol. Methods: Whole-body CTA was performed in 65 patients; 31 of these patients underwent 120 kVp single-energy computed tomographic angiography (SECTA) with standard iodine dose (600 mgI/kg) and 34 with 40 keV DECTA with 50% reduced iodine dose (300 mgI/kg). SECTA data were reconstructed with adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction of 40% (SECTA group), and DECTA data were reconstructed with adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction of 40% (DECTA-40% group) and 80% (DECTA-80% group). CT numbers of the thoracic and abdominal aorta, iliac artery, background noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and arterial depiction were compared among the three groups. The CT dose index volumes (CTDIvol) for the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis were compared between SECTA and DECTA protocols. Results: The vascular CT numbers and background noise were found to be significantly higher in DECTA groups than in the SECTA group (p < 0.001). SNR was significantly higher in the order corresponding to DECTA-80%, SECTA, and DECTA-40% (p < 0.001). The arterial depiction was comparable in almost all arteries; however, intrapelvic arterial depiction was significantly worse in DECTA groups than in the SECTA group (p < 0.0001–0.017). Unlike the pelvic region (p = 0.055), CTDIvol for the thorax (p < 0.0001) and abdomen (p = 0.0031) were significantly higher in the DECTA protocol than in the SECTA protocol. Conclusion: DECTA at 40 keV with 50% reduced iodine dose provided higher vascular CT numbers and SNR than SECTA, and almost comparable arterial depiction, but had a degraded intrapelvic arterial depiction and required a larger radiation dose. Advances in knowledge: DECTA enables 50% reduction of iodine dose while maintaining image quality, arterial depiction in almost all arteries, vascular CT numbers, and SNR; however, it does not allow clear visualization of intrapelvic arteries, requiring a slightly larger radiation dose compared with SECTA with standard iodine dose.

To evaluate image quality, image noise, and conspicuity of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) in pancreatic low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) reconstructed using deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) and compare with those of images reconstructed using hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR). Our institutional review board approved this prospective study. Written informed consent was obtained from all patients. Twenty-eight consecutive patients with PDAC undergoing chemotherapy (14 men and 14 women; mean age, 68.4 years) underwent pancreatic LDCT for therapy evaluation. The LDCT images were reconstructed using 40% adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-Veo (hybrid-IR) and DLIR at medium and high levels (DLIR-M and DLIR-H). The image noise, diagnostic acceptability, and conspicuity of PDAC were qualitatively assessed using a 5-point scale. CT numbers of the abdominal aorta, portal vein, pancreas, PDAC, background noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the anatomical structures, and tumor-to-pancreas contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated. Qualitative and quantitative parameters were compared between the hybrid-IR, DLIR-M, and DLIR-H images. CT dose-index volumes and dose-length product in pancreatic LDCT were 2.3 ± 1.0 mGy and 74.9 ± 37.0 mGy•cm, respectively. The image noise, diagnostic acceptability, and conspicuity of PDAC were significantly better in DLIR-H than those in hybrid-IR and DLIR-M (all P < 0.001). The background noise was significantly lower in the DLIR-H images (P < 0.001) and resulted in improved SNRs (P < 0.001) and CNR (P < 0.001) compared with those in the hybrid-IR and DLIR-M images. DLIR significantly reduced image noise and improved image quality in pancreatic LDCT images compared with hybrid-IR.

Inhibitory deficits are one of the predominant causes of cognitive aging. This study examined age-related changes in response inhibition. In this study, young and older participants performed a bimanual/bipedal response inhibition task while we measured their brain activity via functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Participants performed most trials bimanually (bipedally). However, they had to occasionally cancel both responses [Stop/Stop (SS) trials] or the response of one hand/foot while responding with the other [Go/Stop (GS) trials]. The participants produced more errors in the selective (GS) than in the nonselective canceling trials (SS), and in by-foot response more than in by-hand response trials, irrespective of their age. However, older participants made more errors in the selective cancelation (GS) trials and by-foot responses than young participants did. Older participants showed more frontal brain activity than young participants. The GS trials triggered more activity in the frontal brain areas than the SS trials irrespective of age at many channels, while older participants recruited more brain activation in the GS trials than in the SS trials compared to young participants. Overall, older participants exhibited higher activity in the right, middle, and inferior frontal gyrus than did young participants when performing selective and nonselective inhibition response. These results suggest that neural activation of the core inhibition network declines with age and that compensational recruitment of additional networks is used to yield an expanded inhibition circuit.

Background The molecular features of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutation and chromosome 1p and 19q (1p/19q) codeletion status have pivotal role for differentiating gliomas and have been integrated in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification in 2016. Positron emission tomography (PET) with 3′-deoxy-3′-[18F]fluorothymidine (FLT) has been used to evaluate tumour grade and proliferative activity and compared with l-[methyl-11C]-methionine (MET) in glioma patients. Herein, we evaluated tracer uptakes of MET-PET/CT and FLT-PET/CT for differentiating glioma based on the 2016 WHO classification especially in relation to IDH1 mutation status. Methods In total, 81 patients with newly diagnosed supratentorial glioma were enrolled in this study. They underwent PET/CT studies with MET and FLT before surgery. The molecular features and histopathological diagnosis based on the 2016 WHO classification were determined using surgical specimens. The ratios of the maximum standardized uptake value (SUV) of the tumours to the mean SUV of the contralateral cortex (T/N ratios) were calculated on MET-PET/CT and FLT-PET/CT images. Results The mean T/N ratios of MET-PET/CT and FLT-PET/CT in IDH1-wildtype tumours were significantly higher than those in IDH1-mutant tumours (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic analysis for differentiating IDH1 mutation status showed that the area under the curve of the FLT T/N ratio was significantly larger than that of the MET T/N ratio (P < 0.01). The mean T/N ratio of FLT-PET/CT in IDH1-wildtype tumours was significantly higher than that in IDH1-mutant tumours among grade II and III gliomas (P = 0.005), but this was not the case for MET-PET/CT. Both MET-PET/CT and FLT-PET/CT were able to distinguish between grade II and III gliomas in IDH1-mutant tumours (P = 0.002 and P < 0.001, respectively), but only FLT-PET/CT was able to distinguish between grade III and IV gliomas in IDH1-wildtype tumours (P = 0.029). Conclusion This study showed that FLT-PET/CT can be used to determine the IDH1 mutation status and evaluate glioma grade more accurately than MET-PET/CT. FLT-PET/CT can improve glioma differentiation based on the 2016 WHO classification, but caution must be paid for tumours without contrast enhancement and further studies should be conducted with more cases.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of histographic analysis of iodine concentration (IC) and CT number on single-source dual-energy CT (DECT) to assess response to first-line chemotherapy in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who received first-line chemotherapy but not radiation therapy.This prospective study was approved by our institutional review board, and patients gave written informed consent. Sixty consecutive patients with PDAC undergoing first-line chemotherapy underwent DECT during the pancreatic parenchymatous phase (PPP) and the equilibrium phase (EP). The IC and CT number of PDAC were measured using PPP and EP iodine-based material decomposition and monochromatic images (65 keV), respectively. Histographic parameters for the IC and CT number of PDACs were obtained, and differences in mean IC (ΔIC) and CT number (ΔHU) between the PPP and the EP were calculated. These parameters were then compared between the response (partial response or stable disease) and nonresponse (progressive disease) groups.Among the histographic parameters, the kurtosis of IC during the PPP (p = 0.018) and ΔIC (p = 0.0004) were identified as significant for differentiating between the two groups. IC diagnostic factor was calculated using the following coefficients of logistic regression analysis: 0.52 - (1.45 × kurtosis of IC during PPP) + (0.69 × ΔIC). The sensitivity, specificity, and area under the ROC curve for differentiating between the two groups were 97.7%, 70.6%, and 0.889, respectively.The IC diagnostic factor is a potential biomarker for assessing chemotherapeutic response in patients with PDAC.

BACKGROUND Signal intensity on T1 -weighted images (T1 WI) is associated with pancreatic fibrosis and HbA1c levels. PURPOSE To evaluate the feasibility of the pancreatic T1 value for assessment of subjects with normal and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). STUDY TYPE A prospective single-institution study. POPULATION In all, 95 consecutive patients with a known or suspected pancreatic disease. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCES 3T/fast pancreatic T1 mapping using a modified Look-Locker sequence. ASSESSMENT Following the American Diabetes Association criteria, patients were classified into three groups, as follows: no-diabetes subject, HbA1c < 5.7%; prediabetes, 5.7% ≤ HbA1c < 6.5%; and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), HbA1c ≥ 6.5%. Pancreatic T1 value and signal intensity ratio (SIR = SIpancreas /SImuscle ) using T1 WI were compared with the HbA1c values. The objective of our study was to assess the preoperative resectability of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) using the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guideline, the general rules of the Japan Pancreas Society (JPS), and both of them combined.Eighty-six consecutive patients with PDAC (50 men and 36 women; mean age ± SD, 70.8 ± 9.0 years; age range, 49-86 years) underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced CT. Following the NCCN guideline, the degree of vascular invasion was evaluated to determine the NCCN score: 0 points for absence of vascular invasion, 1 point for tumor contact ≤ 180°, and 2 points for tumor contact180°. Direct invasion to adjacent structures was rated according to the general rules of JPS to determine the JPS score: 0 points for absence and 1 point for presence. The NCCN score, JPS score, and sum of the two scores, which we refer to as the "combined score," were compared with histopathologic or intraoperative findings as well as for the differentiation of R0 resection (negative resection margins) from R1 (microscopic tumor infiltration) and R2 (macroscopic residual tumor) using ROC curve analysis.The sensitivities, specificities, and areas under the ROC curves (AUCs) for the differentiation of R0 from R1 and R2 were 100.0%, 40.0%, and 0.725, respectively, with the NCCN score; 63.9%, 84.0%, and 0.824 with the JPS score; and 86.9%, 68.0%, and 0.874 with the combined score. The AUC of the combined score was significantly greater than that of the NCCN score (p = 0.0059).The assessment of resectability of PDAC based on the combined criteria of the NCCN guideline and general rules of JPS was superior to that based on either criterion alone.

To evaluate the feasibility, image quality, and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) using echo planar imaging (EPI) with Compressed SENSE (EPICS-DWI) of the abdomen and to compare them with conventional single-shot EPI with parallel imaging (PI) technique (PI-DWI).This prospective study included 46 participants with known or suspected upper abdominal diseases (19 men and 27 women, mean age, 68 years) who underwent MRI. DWI acquisition was performed using free-breathing two-dimensional fat-suppressed PI-DWI and EPICS-DWI with SENSE or compressed sensing (CS) factor, 3.0. Moreover, image noise and contour of liver and pancreas were qualitatively evaluated using a five-point scale. The mean ADC value and standard deviation (SD) of the liver, pancreas, and spleen were measured, and the coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated. Qualitative and quantitative parameters were compared between PI-DWI and EPICS-DWI using the Wilcoxon test.The mean image quality scores for image noise and contour of liver and pancreas were higher in EPICS-DWI compared with PI-DWI (P 0.0001). Moreover, the mean ADC values of the liver and pancreas were higher in EPICS-DWI compared with PI-DWI (P 0.0001), but that of spleen was not significantly different. The mean SD and CV of the liver, pancreas, and spleen were lower in EPICS-DWI compared with PI-DWI (P 0.0001-0.032).EPICS-DWI could be feasible in MRI of the abdomen and significantly improve image quality compared with PI-DWI in aggressive setting. ADC value measurements were higher in EPICS-DWI compared with PI-DWI.

To evaluate the use of deep-learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR) algorithms in dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen, and to compare the image quality and lesion conspicuity among the reconstruction strength levels.This prospective study included 59 patients with 373 hepatic lesions who underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen. All images were reconstructed using four reconstruction algorithms, including 40% adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-Veo (ASiR-V) and DLIR at low, medium, and high-strength levels (DLIR-L, DLIR-M, and DLIR-H, respectively). The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the abdominal aorta, portal vein, liver, pancreas, and spleen and the lesion-to-liver contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated and compared among the four reconstruction algorithms. The diagnostic acceptability was qualitatively assessed and compared among the four reconstruction algorithms and the conspicuity of hepatic lesions was compared between5 and ≥5 mm lesions.The SNR of each anatomical structure (p0.0001) and CNR (p0.0001) were significantly higher in DLIR-H than the other reconstruction algorithms. Diagnostic acceptability was significantly better in DLIR-M than the other reconstruction algorithms (p0.0001). The conspicuity of hepatic lesions was highest when using 40% ASiR-V and tended to lessen as the reconstruction strength level was getting higher in DLIR, especially in5 mm lesions; however, all hepatic lesions could be detected.DLIR improved the SNR, CNR, and image quality compared with 40% ASiR-V, while making it possible to decrease lesion conspicuity using higher reconstruction strength.

This study aims to compare the diagnostic values of mono-exponential, bi-exponential, and stretched exponential diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in differentiating hepatic hemangiomas and liver metastases.This prospective study was approved by our institutional review board, and written informed consent was obtained from all patients. In this study, 244 patients with known or suspected liver disease underwent magnetic resonance imaging. Among them, 37 patients who had focal hepatic lesions with a maximum diameter of ≥10 mm were evaluated. Using home-built software, two radiologists measured the DWI parameters of hepatic lesions for the three models: the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) from a mono-exponential model; the true diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (f) from a bi-exponential model; and the distributed diffusion coefficient (DDC) and water molecular diffusion heterogeneity index (α) from a stretched exponential model. The parameters were compared between hepatic hemangiomas and liver metastases.In total, 64 focal hepatic lesions were evaluated, of which 22 were identified to be hepatic hemangiomas and 42 were liver metastases. ADC, D, f, and DDC values were significantly lower in liver metastases than in hepatic hemangiomas (P 0.0001, 0.0001, 0.015, and 0.0001, respectively); whereas, the α value was significantly higher in liver metastases than in hepatic hemangiomas (P = 0.028). The areas under the ROC curve (AUCs) for differentiating hepatic hemangiomas and liver metastases in ADC, D, D*, f, DDC, and α were 0.940, 0.908, 0.608, 0.686, 0.952, and 0.667, respectively. The AUC values of ADC and DDC were significantly greater than those of D* (P 0.0001), f (P = 0.0001), and α values (P = 0.0001).ADC and DDC values from the mono-exponential and stretched exponential models could be considered as quantitative imaging biomarkers for differentiating hepatic hemangiomas and liver metastases.

Background Simultaneous acquisition of magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and diagnostic images is challenging in contrast-enhanced upper abdominal MRI. Purpose To evaluate the image quality of MRA of the abdomen acquired simultaneously with diagnostic MR images, and to compare the contrast effect, conspicuity of aortic branches, and pancreatic lesions in MRA between gadobutrol and gadoterate meglumine. Study type Prospective. Population Eighty-eight patients with known and suspected upper abdominal disease. Field strength/sequences 3T/4D-eTHRIVE (T1 -weighted fat-suppressed 3D fast gradient echo) for multiarterial phase imaging. Assessment The artery-to-muscle signal intensity ratio (SIR), conspicuity of aortic branches on the axial, maximum intensity projection (MIP), and volume-rendered (VR) images, and conspicuity of focal pancreatic lesions were compared between gadobutrol and gadoterate meglumine. The diameters of aortic branches were measured on axial MRA and computed tomography angiography (CTA) images and then compared. Statistical tests Quantitative and qualitative data were assessed with the Mann-Whitney U-test. The diameters of aortic branches between MRA and CTA were compared with a Spearman rank correlation test. Results View-sharing multiarterial phase imaging was successfully performed in all patients. The SIRs of common hepatic artery (P = 0.0051) and left renal artery (RA) (P = 0.045), vascular conspicuities of right and left hepatic arteries (P = 0.010 and 0.030) and right and left RAs on axial (P = 0.0065 and 0.036), and that of gastroduodenal artery on MIP (P = 0.039) with gadobutrol were significantly higher than those with gadoterate meglumine. The conspicuity of focal pancreatic lesions were comparable between the gadobutrol and gadoterate meglumine (P = 0.73). The vascular diameters on MRA and CTA were strongly correlated in all aortic branches (r = 0.842-0.942, P Data conclusion High-quality MRA of the abdomen was obtained simultaneously with the diagnostic MR images using view-sharing multiarterial phase imaging that also demonstrated comparable image quality between gadobutrol and gadoterate meglumine. Purpose To evaluate the value of view-sharing multi-hepatic arterial-phase (mHAP) imaging for diagnosis of hypervascular hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and methods Forty-seven consecutive patients with HCC underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging before angiographic and lipiodol CT. Hepatic arterial-phase images were obtained at 5 consecutive phases with shared central k-space of 25%, followed by portal venous, late (2 and 3 min), and hepatobiliary phase imaging. One-hundred-eight HCC nodules (size: 5–88 mm, mean size: 18.2 mm) confirmed on angiographic CT and lipiodol CT were evaluated for LI-RADS category and compared with single arterial-phase and mHAP findings regarding wash out, capsule, corona enhancement, and image quality. Results Twenty-four HCCs (22.2%) (size: 6–19 mm, mean size: 12.3 mm) were categorized as LR-3 based on the single arterial-phase. Capsule appearance (25.9%) and washout (57.4%) were most frequently observed in late phase (2 min). Corona enhancement was observed in 73.1% of all HCCs on mHAP. For the 24 HCCs of LR-3, corona enhancement was observed in 75% on mHAP and contributed to upgrade category. No significant difference was found in the frequency of corona enhancement between mHAP and angiographic CT ( P = 0.11). Image quality was valued as good or excellent in all cases. Conclusion View-sharing mHAP was feasible without compromising image quality and contributed to the improvement in diagnostic confidence for hypervascular HCC in gadoxetic acid-enhance MR imaging.

Purpose To compare diagnostic performance of unenhanced and CTA images (Image set 1) to that of combined unenhanced, CTA, and venous-phase images (Image set 2) for incidentalomas in patients with aortic aneurysm. Methods Preoperative CT Images of consecutive 240 patients were reviewed by two observers for incidentalomas. Diagnostic performance was assessed. Results Sensitivity was higher in Image set 2 than Image set 1 in observer 1 and overall (P = 0.03 and 0.00). AUCs for both observers were higher in Image set 2 than Image set 1 (P = 0.03 and 0.01). Conclusion Addition of venous-phase to CTA significantly improved diagnostic performance of incidentalomas.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal motor neuron disease. In ALS, both glucose consumption and neuronal intensity reportedly decrease in the cerebral motor cortex when measured by positron emission tomography (PET). In this study, we evaluated cervical spinal glucose metabolism, blood flow, and neuronal intensity of 10 ALS patients with upper extremity (U/E) atrophy both with 18F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (18F-FDG) PET and 11C-flumazenil (11C-FMZ) PET. On the ipsilateral side of C5 and T1 levels, 18F-FDG uptake increased significantly (*p < 0.05), and was correlated with the rate of progression of the ALS FRS-R-U/E score (R = 0.645, *p = 0.041). Despite this hyperglucose metabolism, the 11C-FMZ PET study did not show a coupled increase of spinal blood flow even though neuronal intensity did not decrease. These results indicate a strong correlation between hyperglucose metabolism and ALS progression alongside the uncoupling of flow-metabolism. This mechanism, which could result in subsequent motor neuronal death, may be a potential therapeutic target for ALS.

Purpose To investigate iodine dose concentration required for adequate hepatic parenchymal enhancement on fast-kilovoltage-switching dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) of the abdomen based on patient body weight. Materials and methods The protocol of this prospective study was approved by the local Institutional Review Board and written informed consent for study participation was obtained from all patients. The study cohort of 204 consecutive patients who underwent whole body single-source DECT to screen for tumor metastases and/or recurrence after surgical resection of malignant tumors were randomly assigned to one of three protocols according to the iodine dose (400, 500, and 600 mgI/kg). For each case, two radiologists quantitatively and qualitatively reviewed three energy levels (65, 70, and 75 kilo electron volt [keV]) of the portal venous phase virtual monochromatic images (VMIs). CT numbers of the liver and the qualitative hepatic parenchymal enhancement were compared among the VMIs with the three protocols and three energy levels. Results Hepatic enhancement (ΔHU > 50HU) was achieved at 65 keV with 400, 500, and 600 mgI/kg, at 70 keV with 500 and 600 mgI/kg, and at 75 keV with 600 mgI/kg. The hepatic parenchymal enhancement was graded as sufficient hepatic enhancement in 97%, 100%, and 99% at 65 keV with 400, 500, and 600 mgI/kg, 88% and 97% at 70 keV with 500 and 600 mgI/kg, and 84% at 75 keV with 600 mgI/kg, respectively. Conclusion The iodine dose can be reduced to 400 mgI/kg at 65 keV or 500 mgI/kg at 70 keV in DECT without compromising hepatic parenchymal enhancement.

Abundant evidence has shown that human and nonhuman primates have perceptual biases for rapid detection of evolutionarily fear-relevant stimuli (snakes) in terms of threat perception using the visual search paradigm. There are, however, several levels at which one can criticize these paradigms. In this chapter, I summarize the problems with visual search studies. Then, I explore electroencephalogram studies using the early posterior negativity (EPN), an event-related potential (ERP) component that reflects early selective visual processing of emotionally significant information, which increases when evolutionarily relevant threat stimuli are presented. Some studies have found that EPN amplitudes in response to snake images are larger than are those for spider or crocodile images. This larger EPN for snakes is interpreted as increased source activity in visual areas, as projected from the amygdala by triggering fear circuits. Of course, this projection route confers a significant advantage for primates to rapidly respond to potential risks, helping them to evolve efficiently. These results suggest that humans are predisposed to attend rapidly to snakes through our evolutionary lineage and confirm that spiders do not appear to hold special early attentional value.

There has been growing awareness of the correlation between an episode of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) later in life. It has been reported that TBI accelerated amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology and cognitive decline in the several lines of AD model mice. However, the short-term and long-term effects of TBI by the weight-drop method on amyloid-β pathology and cognitive performance are unclear in wild-type (WT) mice. Hence, we examined AD-related histopathological changes and cognitive impairment after TBI in wild-type C57BL6J mice. Five- to seven-month-old WT mice were subjected to either TBI by the weight-drop method or a sham treatment. Seven days after TBI, the WT mice exhibited significantly lower spatial learning than the sham-treated WT mice. However, 28 days after TBI, the cognitive impairment in the TBI-treated WT mice recovered. Correspondingly, while significant amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and amyloid precursor protein (APP) accumulation were observed in the TBI-treated mouse hippocampus 7 days after TBI, the Aβ deposition was no longer apparent 28 days after TBI. Thus, TBI induced transient amyloid-β deposition and acute cognitive impairments in the WT mice. The present study suggests that the TBI could be a risk factor for acute cognitive impairment even when genetic and hereditary predispositions are not involved. The system might be useful for evaluating and developing a pharmacological treatment for the acute cognitive deficits.

This chapter will discuss changes in psychological theories regarding concepts of how fear develops. In the early period of psychology, the psychology of learning exerted a strong influence, and it was thought that most behaviors and mental processes were acquired through experience; thus, phobias and fears of specific animals and places were believed to be acquired through learning. Once fear is felt toward a particular animal on one occasion, an individual becomes afraid of that animal through classical conditioning. Mowrer used a two-process model to explain that the avoidance response is maintained even if the animal does not cause any further fear in the individual. His theory was widely accepted not only by experimental psychologists but also by clinical psychologists.

The preparedness theory of phobias hypothesizes that certain associations tend not to form because the particular combination of stimulus and response was not “prepared” in the process of evolution. In this chapter, I will discuss subsequent theoretical developments as well as related experimental results. Specifically, in this chapter I will give an overview of the fact that, with regard to biological fear-related stimuli in classical conditioning of fear in people, (1) conditioning is quick, (2) there is high resistance to extinction, (3) associative learning is established even when the stimuli are subconscious, and (4) there are illusory correlations between stimuli and aversion.

In this chapter, I examined the possibility that quick detection of snakes is achieved not only by subcortical visual pathway but also by cortical processing such as V2 and V4. A larger EPN for snake pictures, which is considered to occur from visual cortical areas, emerges around 200 ms after the onset of the stimulus. It is thought to result from automatic selective visual attention to emotional stimuli, which may evoke priority processing because of their intrinsic affective significance, with the amygdala modulating activity in the visual cortex. Humans can identify one face among possible six faces, even if the stimuli were followed by a masking stimulus only 20–30 ms after the stimulus onset. Our recent study showed that macaques could select one target image among eight distractors, even when these images were followed by masking patterns after 50 ms. These suggest that visual information is processed by cortical areas as fast as subcortical areas at least for a single image. Early visual areas such as V2 and V4 play important role to discriminate textures. Snake skin (scale) constitutes a uniform texture. If snake scale is a critical feature to detect snakes for primates and humans, V2 and V4 may contribute to detect snakes quickly, which activations may be reflected as a larger EPN. I conclude this chapter with future directions for the better understanding of fear of snakes.

Objectives: To evaluate image quality and lesion detection capabilities of low-dose (LD) portal venous phase whole-body computed tomography (CT) using deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR). Methods: The study cohort of 59 consecutive patients (mean age, 67.2 years) who underwent whole-body LD CT and a prior standard-dose (SD) CT reconstructed with hybrid iterative reconstruction (SD-IR) within one year for surveillance of malignancy were assessed. The LD CT images were reconstructed with hybrid iterative reconstruction of 40% (LD-IR) and DLIR (LD-DLIR). The radiologists independently evaluated image quality (5-point scale) and lesion detection. Attenuation values in Hounsfield units (HU) of the liver, pancreas, spleen, abdominal aorta, and portal vein; the background noise and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the liver, pancreas, and spleen were calculated. Qualitative and quantitative parameters were compared between the SD-IR, LD-IR, and LD-DLIR images. The CT dose-index volumes (CTDIvol) and dose-length product (DLP) were compared between SD and LD scans. Results: The image quality and lesion detection rate of the LD-DLIR was comparable to the SD-IR. The image quality was significantly better in SD-IR than in LD-IR (p < 0.017). The attenuation values of all anatomical structures were comparable between the SD-IR and LD-DLIR (p = 0.28–0.96). However, background noise was significantly lower in the LD-DLIR (p < 0.001) and resulted in improved SNRs (p < 0.001) compared to the SD-IR and LD-IR images. The mean CTDIvol and DLP were significantly lower in the LD (2.9 mGy and 216.2 mGy•cm) than in the SD (13.5 mGy and 1011.6 mGy•cm) (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: LD CT images reconstructed with DLIR enable radiation dose reduction of >75% while maintaining image quality and lesion detection rate and superior SNR in comparison to SD-IR. Advances in knowledge: Deep learning image reconstruction algorithm enables around 80% reduction in radiation dose while maintaining the image quality and lesion detection compared to standard-dose whole-body CT.

Objective To assess the noncontrast two-dimensional single-shot balanced turbo-field-echo magnetic resonance angiography (b-TFE MRA) features of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) status following endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) and evaluate to detect endoleaks (ELs). Materials and Methods We examined four aortic stent-grafts in a phantom study to assess the degree of metallic artifacts. We enrolled 46 EVAR-treated patients with AAA and/or common iliac artery aneurysm who underwent both computed tomography angiography (CTA) and b-TFE MRA after EVAR. Vascular measurements on CTA and b-TFE MRA were compared, and signal intensity ratios (SIRs) of the aneurysmal sac were correlated with the size changes in the AAA after EVAR (AAA prognoses). Furthermore, we examined six feasible b-TFE MRA features for the assessment of ELs. Results There were robust intermodality (r = 0.92–0.99) correlations and interobserver (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.97–0.99) agreement. No significant differences were noted between SIRs and aneurysm prognoses. Moreover, “mottled high-intensity” and “creeping high-intensity with the low-band rim” were recognized as significant imaging findings suspicious for the presence of ELs (p < 0.001), whereas “no signal black spot” and “layered high-intensity area” were determined as significant for the absence of ELs (p < 0.03). Based on the two positive features, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for the detection of ELs were 77.3%, 91.7%, and 84.8%, respectively. Furthermore, the k values (0.40–0.88) displayed moderate-to-almost perfect agreement. Conclusion Noncontrast MRA could be a promising imaging modality for ascertaining patient follow-up after EVAR.

This data article contains supporting information regarding the research article entitled “Traumatic brain injury accelerates amyloid-β deposition and impairs spatial learning in the triple-transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer׳s disease” (H. Shishido, Y. Kishimoto, N. Kawai, Y. Toyota, M. Ueno, T. Kubota, Y. Kirino, T. Tamiya, 2016) [1]. Triple-transgenic (3×Tg)-Alzheimer׳s disease (AD) model mice exhibited significantly poorer spatial learning than sham-treated 3×Tg-AD mice 28 days after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Correspondingly, amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition within the hippocampus was significantly greater in 3×Tg-AD mice 28 days after TBI. However, data regarding the short-term and long-term influences of TBI on amyloid precursor protein (APP) accumulation in AD model mice remain limited. Furthermore, there is little data showing whether physical activity and motor learning are affected by TBI in AD model mice. Here, we provide immunocytochemistry data confirming that TBI induces significant increases in APP accumulation in 3×Tg-AD mice at both 7 days and 28 days after TBI. Furthermore, 3×Tg-AD model mice exhibit a reduced ability to acquire conditioned responses (CRs) during delay eyeblink conditioning compared to sham-treated 3×Tg-AD model mice 28 days after TBI. However, physical activity and motor performance are not significantly changed in TBI-treated 3×Tg-AD model mice.

To evaluate the value of adding single-shot balanced turbo field-echo (b-TFE) sequence to conventional magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) for the detection of common bile duct (CBD) stone. One hundred thirty-seven consecutive patients with suspected CBD stone underwent MRCP including single-shot b-TFE sequence. Twenty-five patients were confirmed with CBD stone by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography or ultrasonography. Two radiologists reviewed two image protocols: protocol A (conventional MRCP protocol: unenhanced T1-, T2-, and respiratory-triggered three-dimensional fat-suppressed single-shot turbo spin-echo MRCP sequence) and protocol B (protocol A plus single-shot b-TFE sequence). The sensitivity, specificity, positive (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV), and area under the receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) for the detection of CBD stone were compared. The sensitivity (72%) and NPV (94%) were the same between the two protocols. However, protocol B was greater in the specificity (99%) and PPV (94%) than protocol A (92% and 67%, respectively) (P = 0.0078 and 0.031, respectively). The AUC was significantly greater for protocol B (0.93) than for protocol A (0.86) (P = 0.026). Inclusion of single-shot b-TFE sequence to conventional MRCP significantly improved the specificity and PPV for the detection of CBD stone.

To identify predictive factors for embolic material conversion to N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) for the treatment of primary postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) after failed transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) using gelatin sponge (GS). Institutional review board approval was obtained. We retrospectively studied 62 consecutive women with primary PPH who underwent TAE between January 2006 and March 2015. Five of them were excluded for the following: cardiopulmonary arrest at arrival (n = 1), uterine inversion (n = 1), and hysterectomy after TAE (n = 3). Remaining 57 women (age range, 21–43 years; mean, 32.6 years) comprised study population. TAE was initially performed using GS in all cases and then converted to NBCA after two embolizations using GS with persistent hemodynamic instability or vaginal bleeding. The patients’ background, uterine height, vital signs, laboratory tests, disseminated intravascular coagulation score, and details of procedure were reviewed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine factors related to embolic material conversion. Technical success rate was 100%. Fourteen patients (25%) needed embolic material conversion to NBCA. Univariate analysis showed that uterine height, systolic blood pressure (sBP), and hemoglobin level were significantly related to embolic material conversion to NBCA (P = 0.029, 0.030, and 0.042). Logistic regression analysis showed that uterine height (odds ratio, 1.37; P = 0.025) and sBP (odds ratio, 0.96; P = 0.003) were associated with embolic material conversion to NBCA. Uterine height and sBP can be predictive factors for embolic material conversion to NBCA for the treatment of PPH. Level 4, Case Control Study

To evaluate the association between gadoxetic-acid-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging measurements and laboratory and clinical biomarkers of liver function and fibrosis.One hundred thirty nine consecutive patients with suspected liver disease or liver tumor underwent gadoxetic-acid-enhanced MR imaging. MR imaging measurements during the hepatobiliary phase included biliary tract structure-to-muscle signal intensity ratio (SIR). These measurements were compared with Child-Pugh classification, end-stage liver disease (MELD) score, and aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI).The SIRs of cystic duct and common bile duct were significantly correlated with Child-Pugh classification (P=0.012 for cystic duct and P0.0001 for common bile duct), MELD score (P=0.0016 and P=0.0033), and APRI (P=0.0022 and P=0.0015). The sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve were: (74%, 88%, 0.86) with the SIR of common bile duct for the detection of patients with Child-Pugh class B or C; (100%, 87%, 0.94) with the SIR of cystic duct for MELD score (10); (65%, 76%, 0.70) with the SIR of common bile duct for APRI (1.5).Gadoxetic-acid contrast enhancement of cystic duct and common bile duct could be used as biomarkers to assess liver function.
