Introduction: In very old people, there is an increase in the incidence of senile cataract and its consequent visual deterioration and quality of life. Objective: To compare the clinical and refractive results, as well as the quality of life after cataract surgery of the first eye in octogenarian and nonagenarian patients. Material and Methods: A longitudinal, prospective, pre-experimental case series investigation was carried out in 56 octogenarian and 32 nonagenarian patients operated on for cataract of the first eye. The preoperative characteristics of the patient, pre- and postoperative visual function and quality of life, the surgical technique used, intraoperative and postoperative complications, as well as the postoperative ocular comorbidities found were studied, which were presented in the form of means, as well as absolute and relative frequencies in every separate group and then statistically compared with each other. Results: Visual function and self-perceived quality of life improved significantly postoperatively in both groups of patients, although octogenarians experienced quantitatively superior results in both variables. Age-related macular degeneration was the main comorbidity associated with postoperative visual difficulty in both age groups, but with a higher prevalence in nonagenarians. Conclusions: Cataract surgery of the first eye improves visual function and vision-related quality of life in octogenarian and nonagenarian patients, even in the presence of age-related macular degeneration and other ocular comorbidities related to postoperative visual difficulty. However, quantitatively inferior postoperative results are observed in nonagenarians

Objetivo: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar los síntomas persistentes, la satisfacción sanitaria y la calidad de vida general de los supervivientes de COVID-19 a los 30, 90 y 180 días del alta de la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos. Método: Estudio de cohorte prospectivo multicéntrico de supervivientes de COVID-19 dados de alta de ocho hospitales de Curitiba - Paraná (Brasil) entre septiembre de 2020 y enero de 2022. Las supervivientes de COVID-19 elegibles fueron entrevistados por teléfono. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo y se compararon los datos mediante la prueba Q de Cochran y la prueba no paramétrica de Friedman. Resultados: Sesenta y dos supervivientes del COVID-19 respondieron a las tres etapas de la entrevista. Los síntomas persistentes notificados con más frecuencia fueron fatiga, disnea leve y mialgia. A los 30, 90 y 180 días de seguimiento, la mayoría de los pacientes declararon una "buena" calidad de vida en general (59,7%, 62,9%, 51,6%, respectivamente) y un estado de salud "satisfactorio" (43,5%, 48,4%, 46,8%, respectivamente). Conclusión: Este estudio reveló la persistencia de los síntomas tras la infección por COVID-19, y la comprensión de estas consecuencias es el primer paso hacia el desarrollo de tratamientos médicos y estrategias de gestión para estos pacientes.

Introduction: mucopolysaccharidoses are a group of rare and innate disorders caused by the dysfunction or absence of lysosomal enzymes involved in the degradation of mucopolysaccharides or also called glycosaminoglycans. Objective: to describe clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of mucopolysaccharidosis. Method: a narrative bibliographic review was carried out, using the synthetic and historical-logical analytical methods, by analyzing the articles retrieved from the SciELO, Scopus and ClinicalKey databases. Filters were used for the selection of articles in English and Spanish languages; as well as articles published in the period 2018 to 2023. A total of 110 references addressing the main clinical epidemiological characteristics of the disease in question were selected. Results: mucopolysaccharidosis generally occurs in 1 in 28,000 live newborns; it is of autosomal recessive inheritance where mucopolysaccharidosis type II has X-linked inheritance. The characteristics of mucopolysaccharidosis are varied due to disseminated organ involvement; among the most visible are short stature, large head, microscopic face, thick lips and eyebrows, large eyes with corneal opacity, developmental or psychomotor delay with progressive neurological involvement. Conclusions: Mucopolysaccharidoses are a group of inherited metabolic diseases. In mucopolysaccharidosis an adequate diagnosis is essential to improve the life expectancy of patients. The treatment of mucopolysaccharidosis is based on reducing the progression of the disease with the consequent improvement of the patient's quality of life.

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus is one of the major public health problems in the world due to its high prevalence and great impact on people's quality of life. Objectives: to evaluate the influence of community intervention in type 2 diabetics of the Medical Office 175-176 of the "Hermanos Cruz" Polyclinic, in the period 2020-2022. Methods: a quasi-experimental study of community intervention was carried out. The universe consisted of 80 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and the sample consisted of 50 patients with diabetes mellitus who met the inclusion criteria. The study had 3 stages, diagnosis, intervention and evaluation, and a questionnaire was applied to determine the level of knowledge before and after the intervention. For the preparation and analysis of the tables, descriptive statistical tests were applied (percentage, means, standard deviation) and McNemar's test at the inferential level. Results: the largest number of patients were aged 60 years and over, more than half of them had a university degree. Before the application of the community intervention, most of them did not know about the aspects of diabetes mellitus, among them: definition, associated diseases, complications, risk factors, signs and symptoms, as well as habits and lifestyles. After the application of the educational intervention all patients significantly increased their cognitive level about the aspects related to diabetes mellitus. Conclusions: The effectiveness of the community intervention was demonstrated.

La enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) es una enfermedad con amplias implicaciones sociales y económicas, su incidencia mundial seguirá aumentando, siendo para la próxima década la cuarta causa global de muerte. El deterioro físico subsecuente a la disfunción pulmonar, trae consigo cambios multisistémicos que desencadenan la reducción de la capacidad funcional del individuo, dichos fenómenos están relacionados con la severidad de los síntomas y también el nivel detrimento del sistema cardiovascular y musculoesquelético. Por ende, los pacientes con EPOC tienden a reducir su calidad de vida relacionada con la salud (CVRS) y consigo, una reducción de la expectativa de vida. El tratamiento del paciente con esta enfermedad no se limita a la farmacoterapia y tratamientos paliativos secundarios, sino que también trasciende en la identificación e intervención de factores que afectan la CVRS. La presente revisión tuvo los objetivos de explorar, analizar y exponer evidencia científica conspicua que asocia a la funcionalidad y CVRS en pacientes con EPOC. Los hallazgos muestran la importancia de evaluar e intervenir los factores que reducen la CVRS. Alternativas como la educación y coaching en salud parecen lograr reducir el impacto de la enfermedad en diversas esferas del individuo.

The case report of an 18 years adolescent is presented. He was assisted at Armando García Aspurú Teaching Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba due to a history of psychomotor development retardation, wandering march, frequent falls, positive Gowers sign, diminished proximal muscular force in upper and lower limbs, twins pseudohypertrophy, atrophy of pectoralis and scapular quadriceps. The clinical signs and symptoms allowed to diagnose a Duchenne muscular dystrophy. As the necessary rehabilitative treatment could not be carried out, a progressive and severe musculoskeletal deterioration of the patient took place.

Objetivo: evaluar el efecto de la braquiterapia sobre la funcionalidad y la calidad de vida de mujeres con cáncer de cuello uterino. Método: estudio transversal y descriptivo realizado entre diciembre de 2019 y febrero de 2020 con 33 mujeres con neoplasia uterina en tratamiento de braquiterapia, monitoreadas en el Centro Oncológico do Nordeste - Brasil. Se aplicó el instrumento Funtional Assessment of Cancer Therapy – Cervix Cancer. Se compararon las medias de las subescalas y se analizó la correlación entre ellas por medio de las pruebas ANOVA y t de Student. Resultados: se evidenciaron requerimientos centrados en la autoimagen, la sexualidad y las quejas urinarias. La media de preocupaciones adicionales fue menor en los grupos etarios de 31 a 49 años (p=0.004) y de 60 a 75 (p=0.002). Conclusión: abordar cuestiones relacionadas con la sexualidad y las molestias urinarias contribuyen a la identificación precoz de los síntomas causados por la braquiterapia, así como a la implementación de medidas, proporcionando calidad de vida a la paciente.

Objetivo: analizar los efectos de la sexualidad sobre los trastornos mentales comunes y la calidad de vida de las personas ancianas. Método: estudio transversal realizado con 721 ancianos de todas las regiones de Brasil que respondieron a cuatro instrumentos: biosociodemográficos, EVASI, SRQ-20 y WHOQOL-Old entre los meses de julio y octubre de 2020. Los datos se analizaron mediante las pruebas de Mann-Whitney y del Modelo de Ecuaciones Estructurales, adoptando un intervalo de confianza del 95%. Severe autism is one of the levels of impairment of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in its fifth version. This study describes severe autism according to the scientific literature and discusses, from the information produced by the participants, its social impact on the family life of this subject. The research is characterized as descriptive-explanatory with quantitative and qualitative data in a perspective of qualitative approach for data analysis and interpretation. The results point to the intense suffering experienced by people with severe autism, as well as their families, as well as social impacts due to the absence of effective public policies that favor their quality of life and social inclusion. It is concluded that the invisibility of severe autism in Brazilian society is a factor that promotes and perpetuates mechanisms of social exclusion, besides the evidence of the need for further studies, research and dissemination on the subject.

Introduction: the informal caregiver plays an important role in the structure of families with dependent old people with stroke. Objective: to determine the behavior of overburden in informal caregivers of old people with stroke. Methods: analytical, cross-sectional study in a sample of 207 old people with stroke and their respective caregivers, chosen at simple random probability, belonging to Pedro Borras Astorga and Raul Sanchez Rodriguez university polyclinics, during 2018. Instruments were applied to collect the information to the variables studied, analyzing the univariate and the bivariate ones and through multiple linear regression. Results: female caregivers predominated, age group 30-44 years, with slight overburden and insufficient social support, 86,61 % did not present previous training. When carrying out care tasks the average was 41,87 months, with 5.68 hours of care per day. Introduction: early palliative care, in addition to improving the quality of life of patients and their families, reduces unnecessary hospitalizations, inappropriate and ineffective treatments, medical complications and related costs. Objective: to characterize clinically and epidemiologically patients with malignant tributary tumors of palliative care. Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in patients with histological diagnosis of malignant tributary tumors of palliative care at the “Daniel Codorniú Cruna” municipal hospital of Placetas municipality, Villa Clara, between the months of October 2017 and March 2018. Used a universe of 208 patients, selecting a sample of 110. The information obtained was processed using descriptive statistics techniques. Medical ethics was respected. Results: the male sex prevailed (55,5 %) and the ages between 40 and 69 years (47,3 %). The pre-university and secondary school levels (38,2 % and 27,3 %) respectively, as well as toxic smoking habits (31,8 %) and alcohol consumption (19,1 %) were highlighted. The most frequent location of the cancer was lung cancer (20,9 %) where 56,4 % of the patients were in stage IV of the disease. Conclusions: palliative care should be developed and accessible to all cancer patients who require it with the aim of improving the management of symptoms and their quality of life.

A population of 267 patients was used, selecting a sample of 214 patients. Results: the most frequent tumors were those of the digestive tract (32,2 %), among which mixed type pain (31,8 %) predominated. The most frequent type of pain among patients with malignant tumors was somatic (40,2 %). The pain was described as strong in 63,6 % of the patients. The episodic character prevailed over the permanent (58,9 %). Regarding general health, the majority of patients (85,0 %) defined it as bad and the overall quality of life was mostly evaluated as regular (51,4 %) and poor (44,8 %). Conclusions: the most frequent type of pain was somatic, followed by mixed and visceral. As for the intensity it was mostly described as a strong pain, of episodic character. General health and overall quality of life was valued mostly as regular and bad.

Introducción: la diabetes mellitus (DM) es la enfermedad crónica más prevalente en la posmenopausia. La deficiencia estrogénica paulatina que se sucede en el climaterio, produce síntomas y deterioro de algunos órganos y sistemas, con cambios negativos en la calidad de vida (CV). Objetivo: evaluar la presencia y severidad de síntomas relacionados con la menopausia, así como la CV que tienen mujeres climatéricas diagnosticadas con DM tipo II. Metodología: estudio transversal que involucra mujeres colombianas que padecen DM tipo II, residentes en la costa caribe y pacífica, en áreas urbanas y rurales, entre 40 y 59 años de edad, que hacen parte de la base de datos del proyecto CAVIMEC (Calidad de Vida en la Menopausia y Etnias Colombianas). Fueron valoradas con “Menopause Rating Scale” (MRS), escala especifica de CV para mujeres en menopausia, para establecer la prevalencia y la severidad de las manifestaciones menopáusicas, el deterioro de los dominios y la puntuación total de la escala. El formulario de datos socio-demográficos y la escala MRS fueron aplicados puerta a puerta en las residencias de las mujeres. Los datos se presentan en media±DS y porcentual. Resultados: 192 mujeres climatéricas afectadas de DM tipo II son evaluadas con MRS. Edad promedio 52.3±5.8. Escolaridad superior a seis años: 67.8%. En sobrepeso u obesidad: 66.2%. Nunca fumadoras: 63.2%. Cincuenta o más años de edad: 68.9%. Presencia concomitante de hipertensión arterial: 40.9%. Con pareja sexual: 58.5%. En posmenopausia el 63.7%, y entre estas la edad promedio de última regla fue a 48.4±4.3 años. Los síntomas más prevalentes fueron: oleadas de calor (70.3%), dolores músculo/articulares (69.2%), cansancio físico-mental (68.7%) y trastorno del sueño (68.2%), similares a los obtenidos en otras poblaciones colombianas, sin discriminar por presencia de DM. El problema severo más prevalente fueron los problemas sexuales (30.6%). El 25% de las mujeres tenían deterioro severo del dominio urogenital y el 16% deterioro severo de la calidad de vida. Conclusión: en mujeres colombianas climatéricas con DM se observa puntuación total del MRS similar a la población general. Introducción: la obesidad es una causa importante de morbimortalidad, considerada un problema de salud pública. La cirugía bariátrica es actualmente una de las estrategias utilizadas para reducir la obesidad, no obstante existen pocos datos sobre su impacto en la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud (CVRS). El objetivo fue comparar la calidad de vida de obesos programados para cirugía bariátrica con pacientes previamente intervenidos. Metodología: estudio comparativo transversal, en personas con obesidad que fueron reunidos así: [Grupo 1] Pacientes obesos con indicación médica para cirugía bariátrica y en proceso de programación operatoria. [Grupo 2] Pacientes con cirugía bariátrica de reciente intervención, no mayor a seis meses. [Grupo 3] Pacientes con cirugía bariátrica realizada entre seis meses y un año. [Grupo 4] Pacientes con más de un año de intervención de cirugía bariátrica. Los datos de contacto tomados de las historias clínicas de dos centros hospitalarios de Cartagena, Colombia. Fueron contactados, invitados a participar y se les aplicaron las escalas de calidad de vida, SF-36 y B.A.R.O.S. Los datos fueron analizados por medio del programa estadístico EPI-INFO versión 3.5.1 Resultados: en el estudio se incluyeron 94 personas de las cuales 66 (70.2%) eran mujeres y 28 (29.8%) hombres. Estaban distribuidos así: Grupo 1: 22; Grupo 2: 24; Grupo 3: 20 y Grupo 4: 28 personas. La cirugía que más se realizaron fueron: sleeve gástrico (59.7%) y bypass gástrico 40.3%. El promedio del índice de masa corporal en el grupo 1, programados a cirugía, fue 40.5 y el promedio de los intervenidos fue 29.9. La puntuación total y los dominios de la escala SF-36 se aumentó significativamente entre mayor tiempo existía desde la realización de la cirugía, o sea tenían mejor calidad de vida. También con la escala B.A.R.O.S. se observó mejoría en todos sus dominios, excepto sexual, en los grupos de personas intervenidos frente a los que estaban pendientes de la cirugía. Conclusiones: los pacientes obesos programados a cirugía bariátrica tuvieron peor calidad de vida que los ya intervenidos. Rev.cienc.biomed. 2014;5(1):79-87

El objeto de estudio de este artículo es la relación personal salud-paciente, describiendo sus atributos o variables (el conocimiento que el personal de salud debe tener para brindar a su atendido, los valores y principios éticos presentes y las “amenidades”, el medio y los recursos con que se cuentan para establecerla). Mención especial se hace de los costes, factor imponderable en esa relación, ya que en ocasiones facilitan y promueven la calidad de la atención médica y otras la dificulta hasta imposibilitarla o hacerla inexistente. Finalmente se analizan los criterios que pueden asegurar la validez y confiabilidad de los indicadores de evaluación de calidad de la atención médica, por lo que se concluye que esta valoración debe ser lo más amplia posible para considerar no solo el conocimiento, los principios éticos y las “amenidades” en la relación del personal de salud con el paciente, sino que debe abarcar los resultados de ésta (calidad de vida y duración).

Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) has a direct influence on the quality of life of people who suffer from it. Objectively measuring this impact at diagnosis and during treatment is important to improve the subsequent adherence to treatment. Based on different studies, general and specific disease scales for OSAHS have been created, which allow to evaluate different dimensions such as daytime symptoms, nocturnal symptoms, daytime sleepiness, emotions, the repercussion of the disease on the social interactions of people, as well as the patient’s perception of the treatment indicated.

Introducción: En la actualidad los estudiantes no se motivan para realizar actividad física en la clase de Educación Física y esto se agrava en el género femenino, dado que tienen mayores índices de obesidad y desmotivación, es un tema contingente en la actualidad de la educación chilena que debe ser abordado. Objetivo: Analizar los factores que inciden en la escasa motivación de estudiantes de género femenino de octavo grado básico en Educación Física. Métodos: El diseño de investigación fue de carácter mixto, ya que estuvo basado en la combinación de metodologías y técnicas de recolección de información cuantitativas y cualitativas. Resultados: Se realizaron análisis y evaluación de diagnóstico rendimiento mujeres y hombres de octavo grado básico en Educación Física. Análisis multivariados de las variables: práctica educativa, metodología y motivación de resultados validados que mostraron una tendencia en sus resultados. Conclusiones: El análisis confirma que las alumnas de octavo básico no se motivan y tampoco participan de forma regular en la clase de Educación Física, porque las actividades no se vinculan a sus intereses e inquietudes propias de una adolescente. Además, presentan desgano en realizar actividades deportivas aludiendo a las exigencias del profesor y actividades que están orientadas hacia los intereses del sexo masculino en desmedro del sexo femenino.

A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 250 operated patients due to senile cataract was carried out in the Ophthalmological Center in Santiago de Cuba, from January, 2015 to February, 2017 to determine the existence of modifications in the visual function and life quality of those affected patients. The following variables were analyzed: age, sex, best corrected visual acuity, colors vision, sensibility to contrast, functional evaluation and life quality before and after surgery. Absolute and relative frequencies were used as summary measures, as well as Chi-squared test of independence and homogeneity, to identify the statistically significant association. The male sex and the ages from 70 to 79 years prevailed. The visual function improved significantly after the surgery, what provided a better life quality, elevating the functional capacity, independence and autonomy of these aged patients.

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo para evaluar la influencia de la rehabilitación protésica en la calidad de vida de los pacientes desdentados totales tratados en las clínicas estomatológicas docentes “Ismael Clark Mascaró” y “La Vigía” en Camagüey, desde septiembre del 2009 a septiembre del 2013. El universo estuvo comprendido por 254 pacientes desdentados totales rehabilitados y una muestra de 43, a través de un muestreo probabilístico aleatorio. Se obtuvo un predominio del grupo de 50-69 años y el sexo femenino. Al determinar los problemas mecánicos se apreció que los flancos sobreextendidos, seguido de las inserciones frénicas sin liberar y la presencia de puntos prematuros de contacto, fueron las principales dificultades encontradas en los pacientes portadores de prótesis totales. La rehabilitación influyó en la calidad de vida de estos pacientes.

Desde finales del siglo pasado, la humanidad se enfrenta con un fenómeno de envejecimiento poblacional. La vejez es una etapa importante, final en la vida del ser humano. Como preocupación esencial reclama la atención de la sociedad. El objetivo del presente trabajo es presentar una revisión bibliográfica sobre el abordaje de la psicología de la vejez, tema que ha permanecido rezagado debido al conjunto de mitos, estereotipos y prejuicios que lo rodean. Sensibilizar a los profesionales con los cambios que ocurren en esta etapa de la vida es un gran reto: elevar la calidad de vida de estas personas, que cada vez constituyen un grupo mayoritario de nuestra sociedad.The old age is an important and final stage in the life of the human being. As an essential concern it requires the attention of society.The objective of this piece of work is to present a bibliographical review about the psychology of the old age.This theme has been left behind due to the group of myths, stereotypes and prejudices that surround it. To make professionals aware and more sensible to the changes that occur during this stage is a big challenge to increase life quality for this group of people which is bigger each time.

La estomatitis aftosa se considera como la más frecuente de las lesiones de la mucosa bucal y afecta alrededor del 20 % de la población, aunque en algunos estudios se han reportado cifras de hasta el 60 %. Se realiza este estudio con el objetivo de evaluar la efectividad de la tintura de propóleo al 5 % en el tratamiento de la estomatitis aftosa. Se realiza un ensayo clínico fase 2 aleatorizado, y se conforman 2 grupos de pacientes de ambos sexos, entre los 12 y 44 años de edad, con diagnóstico clínico de estomatitis aftosa. Al grupo estudio se aplica el propóleo al 5 % y al grupo control el tratamiento convencional, comparando los resultados obtenidos en ambos tratamientos. De estos resultados concluimos que con la aplicación de un método rápido, de bajo costo y de fácil ejecución, se obtuvieron resultados altamente satisfactorios, que corroboran la efectividad de la aplicación de la tintura de propóleo al 5 % en el tratamiento de la estomatitis aftosa. Se logró una rápida incorporación de los pacientes a sus actividades y el mejoramiento de la calidad de vida.Aphtous stomatitis is one of the most frequent lesions in the oral mucosa and affects almost 20% of the population, although some studies have reported figures up to 60%. This study was intended to evaluate the effectiveness of 5% propolis tinction for the treatment of aphtous stomatitis. A phase II randomized clinical assay was conducted on 2 groups of patients of both sexes aged 12-44 years, which were diagnosed with aphtous stomatitis. The study group was treated with 5% propolis tinction whereas the control group was applied the standard treatment. The achieved results were then compared. It was concluded that a rapid, low cost and easy-to-apply method like the 5% propolis tinction therapy yielded highly satisfactory results in treating aphtous stomatitis. This method also made the rapid return of patients to their daily activities and the improvement of their quality of life possible.
