The new prominence of ordinary voice in crime journalism – claims to have seen things, experienced things, felt things ‘first-hand’ – has the potential to decenter elite perspectives and open up crime news narratives to the voices of systemically criminalized subjects. However, I argue in this paper that the political potential of ordinary voice can only be realized in and through concrete instances of its use, and so needs to be examined within news texts as sites of micro-political struggle over meaning. Looking at Australian current affairs television coverage of so-called ‘African gang’ crime in Melbourne, this paper approaches crime news texts as sites of vulnerability politics, where different and sometimes competing claims to vulnerability encounter one another and struggle for public recognition. A close multi-modal analysis of three episodes of current affairs television uncovers four specific strategies of textual composition and presentation by which the criminalization of Black African youth is able to persist despite the testimonial interventions of the criminalized: appropriation, marginalization, subjugation and calculation. The paper concludes by considering the implications of this analysis for future studies of ordinary voice and citizen testimony in news reporting.

This article offers the concept of “economies of recognition” to analyze the moral frames that siblings caring for left-behind parents in China use to negotiate intimate connections to their emigrant brothers and sisters. We argue that the impact of family dislocation on sibling relations is shaped by family members’ co-constructed relational infrastructure. Our findings identify four types of relational infrastructure—collaboration, intrusion/interference, voluntary takeover, and feeling left behind—that mediate the impact of geographic proximity on parental caregiving. We suggest that the interplay between physical distance and elder care is emotionally experienced, interactionally evaluated, and symbolically understood. Understanding solidarity, conflicts, and ambivalence in the contexts of family crisis requires a close examination of how members of a care network attribute each other’s roles and contributions to power symmetry or asymmetry. This explains why the advice, information, money, people, and emotions that are circulated are thought of as helpful resources in some cases but perceived as constraints in others.

Employee voice in company strategic and governance decision-making in Anglophone countries commonly has few formal channels. This article’s investigation of labour’s (collective employees) interest expression in Australia and New Zealand finds that labour actors engage with company actors to craft a range of channels of expression and participation. In addition to actors’ utilisation of formal institutional provisions for adversarial collective bargaining and cooperative participation, actors utilise other ‘at the table’ arrangements that are typically of low salience. These include non-formal, inter-actor arrangements that facilitate contribution to decisions that can include matters of strategic importance. Labour actors engage with company actors in intricate micro-political relations to contribute influence in framing understandings and horizons of decisions and norm-building. Their quiet activities contribute regulatory effect in company decision-making.

Micro-Politics believes that there has been drastic change in the position of women in basic social relationships, within the families, workplace and other public spheres. Postfeministic notion of micro-politics is intended to provide insight into the complicated nexus of relationship and also to rethink this same concept in terms of postfeminism.

Despite the popularity of distributed leadership theory, the investigation of the micro-political aspects of such models have scarcely been explored, and insights on the cultural variety of distributed practices in schools are limited. The present study aimed to explore what micro-political aspects emerge in participative decision making in collectivist and individualist cultures. To this end, a multiple case study method was adopted, focusing on four Israeli public high schools. Schools were chosen to represent an ‘extreme’ case selection rationale: two non-religious urban schools representing individualist cases, and two communal schools in religious kibbutzim representing communal schools. The analysis shed light on three micro-political points of comparison between the prototypes of participative decision making in collectivist and individualist cultures related to control, actors, and stage crafting. The findings and implications are discussed.

Grounded in an ethnographic study of a US fast food chain, this paper explores how the rising employment polarization under neoliberalism may pose a threat to dignity via the predicament of adults doing youth work. We draw on Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition to develop a tripartite framework of the micro-politics of recognition, aimed as a middle-range construct for guiding empirical studies of work through the lens of dignity. We argue that a study of dignity at work, with the everyday human struggle for recognition as the focal point, may help to illuminate the realities of contemporary work and enable a humanistic critique of contemporary capitalism. We also highlight adulthood as the underarticulated yet morally laden identity signifier in organizational inquiry, which may gain added importance as more adults enter occupations where few institutional supports of adulthood exist.

In seeking a nuanced grasp of affective “animal spirits” that shape micro-political management behaviours viscerally, while locating their emergence within broad socio-cultural contexts, the present paper draws on the “lion” and “fox” animal spirits, whose inspiration for Pareto’s psychologistic sociological project we clarify from Chapter XVIII of Machiavelli’s The Prince. Our corresponding managerial ideal-types are initially explored for their heuristic allegorical potential, considering also how particular organisational risk conditions may inculcate and challenge them. These contextualised psycho-affective tendencies are then refined and grounded within recent behavioural-psychology research, through which their suitability for various socio-organisational risk contexts is further elaborated. The resulting framework, connecting emotional dispositions of leaders to longer term contexts, is held up as viable for focusing academic management and organisational research towards practice-related interventions, while also highlighting the Machiavellian-Paretian realist tradition as a source of living theory for social science.

Kişilerin bireysel olarak göç etme kararlarını etkileyen gündelik yaşam içinde mikro etkenler üzerinde yoğunlaşırken, çoğulculuğu ve tekilliği görmezden gelen bir gündelik hayatın eleştirel noktalarını ortaya koyma çabasındandır. Dolayısıyla ortaya çıkan göç hareketliliği, ait olduğu toplum yapısına ve iktidar ilişkilerine dair bir eleştiriyi içinde barındırır. Bu çalışma toplumsal değişim düşüncesinin gündelik hayatın içinden çıktığı ve bu değişimi gerçekleştirecek davranışların mikro politik bir direnişe dayandığı iddiasıyla hareket eder. Yapılan derinlemesine görüşmelerle bu iddia doğrulanma çabasındadır. Böylece gündelik hayat, deneyim, tekillik, arzu, kaçış çizgileri, akış kavramları üzerine odaklanarak bu kavramlarla birlikte “yerinden olma” hali kavramsal ve teorik olarak kurgulamaya çalışılmış ve kurgu çerçevesinde de yapılan derinlemesine görüşmelerle göç düşüncesi ve davranışı, gündelik hayatın içinde ortaya çıkmış mikro politik bir eylem ve tekilliğin direnişi olarak ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır.

The article examines two aspects of development presented through an ethnographic study of the project ‘Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development’. First is the discursive construction of project beneficiaries as poor, underdeveloped and backward in modernist literature. Second, the article captures inter-household negotiations around developmental resources in the context of microcredit. Drawing on participant observations, oral histories and household interviews, I explore the micro-politics of everyday life to reflect on the contesting representations of ‘beneficiary community’ and ‘project experts’. In addition, I analyse the struggle within the community for resources made available by the project. This illuminates the actors, networks and institutions involved in community development programmes and problematizes ideal conceptualization of communities as a site for collective participation. The article highlights practices of objectification and the creation of a populist discourse on participation that overlooks multiple layers of patronage, public and self-interest exercised by project beneficiaries in community development programmes. Additionally, the article investigates how the lack of ‘care’ in modernist participatory agricultural development discourse undermines the community’s aspirations for development and establishes a rupture between policy and practice.

Wie machen NGOs Politik? Als moralische Forderer stehen sie dabei vor einem Dilemma: Ihre Glaubwürdigkeit hängt am kompromisslosen Einsatz für ihre Prinzipien; ihr Überleben erfordert zugleich Kompromissbereitschaft im politischen Wettbewerb. Diese Studie arbeitet empirisch auf, wie NGOs in der Menschenrechtspolitik, Entwicklungszusammenarbeit und Humanitären Hilfe im Alltag mit diesem Dilemma umgehen. Sie zeigt, welche Regelsysteme NGOs nutzen, um Prinzipien und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit in der Aushandlung moralischer Forderungen auszugleichen. Deutlich wird dabei vor allem: Ob dieser Ausgleich dauerhaft gelingt, hängt im Alltag weniger von organisationalen Regeln, sondern in erster Linie vom kompetenten Handeln der Funktionärinnen und Funktionäre in NGOs ab. Sie sind es, die die moralische Integrität ihrer NGOs und damit deren Erfolgsgeheimnis erhalten, indem sie kollektive Moralvorstellungen immer wieder neu ausdeuten und die geteilten Werte im politischen Alltag einfordern. How do NGOs do politics? As principled organizations, they face a dilemma: their credibility depends on uncompromising commitment to their principles; at the same time, their survival requires a willingness to compromise in political competition. This study empirically examines how NGOs in human rights policy, development and humanitarian aid deal with this dilemma in everyday life. It shows which systems of organizational rules NGOs use to balance principles and competitiveness in the negotiation of moral demands. Above all, it becomes clear that whether this balance is achieved in the long term depends less on organizational rules than on competent actions of NGO functionaries. It is they who maintain the moral integrity of their NGOs and thus the secret of their success by constantly reinterpreting collective moral concepts and demanding the shared values in everyday political life.

What are the drivers of collective bargaining to achieve gender equality in companies? Although much research has been done on this question, answers tend to focus exclusively on the institutional perspective and to neglect the social and power relations at work. We address this deficiency in this article by taking a micro-political perspective. We trace the trajectory of a collectively bargained gender equality policy in a French company over 14 years and examine how management and unions contribute to the process. Our results show that the construction of a coalition between management and unions around gender equality, as well as the form taken by the bargained policy, are closely linked to the capabilities that these actors possess and mobilise. This study contributes to the understanding of gender equality bargaining and, more generally, to the micro-politics of collective bargaining. In doing so, it aims to connect organisation studies and industrial relations.

The connection between the everyday and the international has received growing attention in the field of international relations (IR) in recent years. To rethink the international in terms of the everyday, the mundane and the ordinary has brought attention to neglected spaces of the international and turned the everyday into a site of IR analysis. As many of the contributors to this special issue of Cooperation and Conflict note, the everyday has until now not been satisfactorily theorised in relation to IR. It seems clear, however, that to pay attention to the everyday is an attempt to decentralise notions of the international. By drawing on critical approaches to IR, the articles in this special issue unpack the notion of everyday IR and thus provide new and broadened understandings of what IR denote, and how we can make sense of the everyday as a generative site for these relations. This article focuses on the relevance that aesthetic practices play extending parental involvement and influence in school contexts in Spain. One rural, one urban and one peri-urban school have been included in the research. Participant observation and interviews were the main means of data production. In the results all the different schools promoted parents’ participation. However, differences in aesthetic practices and experiences were found. Parental involvement was developed in schools in different ways in relation to local contextual conditions and the salient characteristics of the geographic spaces the schools belonged to. Practical aesthetic knowledge produced multiple strategies of action.

Applying Feminist Institutionalism, the article analyzes the potential institutionalization of GM from a chronological perspective. It investigates to what extent new rules and norms can be incorporated into existing formal and informal rules. Examining key EP documents from the period between 2003 and 2019 and semi-structured interviews conducted with Members of the EP (MEPs) from different political groups and with EP staff in 2019 and 2020, the article provides an analysis of GM institutionalization. Overall, one can say that GM has become institutionalized over time, although implementation is quite heterogenous. This paper explores the role of gendered academic networks in the context of research evaluation, and women’s lived experiences of UK universities. Gendered power is conceptualised as an important aspect of inequality regimes, providing insight into how men maintain power and how power dynamics and informal networks function, characterised in this paper as ‘the hustle’. A case study comprising 80 in-depth, semi-structured qualitative interviews was completed in a UK university. Acker’s (2006) theory of inequality regimes informed the central analytical framework and Bradley's (1999) resource-based theory of power was used to explore the power dynamics in the case study. The findings have resulted in the creation of a conceptual framework which theorises the hybridised nature of inequality, gendered power and organisational lived experience, in which inequality regimes and gendered power interact and are mutually reinforced through informal processes. This paper argues, from the findings of the empirical research, that in the context of the neoliberal university, inequality regimes and gendered power interact, and are mutually reinforced through informal processes and networks- ‘the hustle’.

What shapes micro-political contest in the subsidiary of a multinational corporation? We use observational and interview data from a Pakistani subsidiary of a global company to address this question. We trace debate surrounding the entry of modern (self-service) retail through multiple voices. Following postcolonial theory, we show how top management create a narrative that combines the progressiveness of modern retail with the locally salient discourse of izzat/honour. This hybrid narrative defines the terrain and terms of micro-political contest for all others in the subsidiary. Our analysis shows how some workers adapt this hybrid story to support their interests, whilst the attachment of izzat to the modern restricts the possibility of resistance for others. We examine how the narrative enables the establishment of an elite and a dominated group. The postcolonial approach allows us to argue that the subsidiary is a specific site of micro-political struggle where both geo-political factors and relationships with other parts of the multinational corporation shape micro-political processes.

Elite men’s football in the UK has previously been portrayed as a harsh and competitive micro-political environment. This environment has been described as ‘uncaring’. Paradoxically, care has been identified as an essential aspect of coaching pedagogy. Thus, this study drew upon the experience of a case-study strength and conditioning coach to explore care in a Premier League Football Club. Specifically, a naturally occurring reflective diary served as a primary data source. Findings revealed that the coach ‘cared for’ an athlete through a ‘rules based’ approach, which thus far has not been described within coaching research. The narrative presented also suggested that care was constrained by the competitive context in which the coach operates. This context requires coaches to ‘care about’ results, and the associated implications for their own careers and other individuals around the club e.g. staff and supporters. Thus, this caring relationship was situated and influenced by wider contextual influences. This study should prompt significant consideration by coaches who might examine how their care is influenced by social, economic and micro-political factors, whilst simultaneously providing novel insights for coaching researchers who may further consider ‘rule based’ approaches to care. The term “International public opinion” is now also used by various actors outside the militant field. The media but also governments and international organizations that invoke international public opinion tend to make it a uniform and sometimes lively entity: public opinion can thus “be moved”; “indignant” and even undergo “psychological shocks”. Individuals are of crucial importance to world affairs, this idea is based on certain assumptions such as, acquisitions of better analytical skills, global political system has entered a period of prolonged turbulence which makes it particularly sensitive to micro politics influences and the upheaval of skills is considerable since citizens today shape the overall results in a much more important way than in the past.

This article explores how the institutional treatment of new family configurations weaves into patterns of everyday life, framing intimacy and family organisation. through the study of homoparental family configurations in the italian context, i will analyse the impact, on family configurations, of the gap between the juridical translation of filiation ties and the everyday exercise of parenting. t h e ethnographic gaze will illustrate parental and institutional efforts to make or unmake kinship ties which are neither "biogenetic" nor legally recognised. In this way, I will address how kin relations are constructed, deconstructed and defined by different actors, including children. This will provide some theoretical reflections on the "nature" of kinship and filiation, which must be resituated in its social and historical condition of possibility and in a "moral economy of filiation". Cet article explore la façon dont le traitement institutionnel de l’homoparentalité impacte la vie quotidienne, l’intimité et l’organisation familiale. A travers une étude sur des configurations homoparentales italiennes, je vais analyser l’impact du manque de la traduction juridique des liens de filiation des parents d’intention sur l’exercice quotidien de la parenté. Les données ethnographiques illustreront les efforts parentaux et institutionnels pour faire et défaire des liens de parenté qui ne sont ni « biogénétiques » ni reconnus légalement. Ce faisant, j’interrogerai la façon dont les relations de parenté sont construites, déconstruites et définies par différents acteurs, y compris des enfants. L’article conclut sur les implications théoriques concernant la « nature » de la parenté et de la filiation, qui doivent être resitués dans leurs conditions de possibilités au niveau socio-historique, voire dans une « économie morale de la filiation ».

Despite the welcome contributions of the reflective practice literature, understanding of the complexities, nuances and dilemmas of applied sport psychology practice is in need of further development. For example, there remains a paucity of inquiry addressing how practitioners make sense of, and subsequently write themselves into, the (micro)political landscape of a sporting organization. Utilizing a reflective, ethnographic approach, this paper examined the first author’s engagement with the socio-political dynamics of everyday life within a professional rugby league academy. Key themes identified were that; a) players simultaneously collaborate and compete with one another; b) tensions exist between the coaches; and c) most players end up being released. The micro-political workings of Ball (1987), and Kelchtermans (1996, 2009a, 2009b, 2011) were used as the primary heuristic frameworks, thus promoting the utility of these theories to inform critical appreciation of the day-to-day realities of applied sport psychology practice. The paper concludes by highlighting the potential benefits of researchers, educators, and practitioners better engaging with the contested, ambiguous, and professionally challenging demands of practice than that which has been achieved to date.

This paper explores the micro-politics of a cohousing community called Bin-Zib (Empty/Guests’ House) in Seoul, South Korea. In a society where home ownership has become a financial asset, the residents of Bin-Zib have attempted to turn the home into the common. This paper focuses on how paradoxical principles of the community create Bin-Zib as an argumentative space, where disputes constantly arise. The paper then shows how the practice of communing in Bin-Zib is essentially related to the everyday politics of subjectivation. Finally, the meaning of Bin-Zib in the inter-Asian context will be discussed.

How might political ideology help to shape an organizational field? We explore the discursive construction of the multinational hotel industry through analysis of one of its leading actors, Hilton International (HI), conceived by Conrad Hilton as a means of combatting communism by facilitating world peace through international trade and travel. While the politicized rhetoric employed at hotel openings reflected institutional diversity, it resonated in parallel with a strong anti-communist discourse. We show that through astute political sensemaking and sensegiving, macro-political discourse that is ideological and universalizing may be allied to micro-political practices in strategic action fields. Our study illuminates the processes of early-stage post-war globalization and its accompanying discourses, demonstrating that the foundation of a global industry may be ideologically inspired. Our primary contribution to theory is specific acknowledgement of the importance of political ideology as a particular ‘social skill’, helping to determine how international business has been ‘won’.

Norm contestation by local actors has emerged in recent years as an explanation for the failure of norm diffusion. This article contributes to the literature on norm contestation by analysing how norms diffused by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) pertaining to election observation and free and fair voting are re-constituted and contested by domestic actors in Kazakhstan. The study contributes to the idea of ‘constitutive localisation’ by emphasising a more fundamental level of disagreement beyond just congruence between the diffused norm and local beliefs; by demonstrating contestation can occur in the later stages in the norm diffusion cycle; by focusing on the micro-politics of contestation by local actors involved in the implementation of diffused norms; and by revealing how norm contestation is not necessarily a process of emancipatory politics, but a strategic act to serve authoritarian consolidation. Utilising a four-fold framework, the analysis illustrates how norms, while initially accepted by Kazakhstani authorities, are reconstituted through political discourse and/or practice, creating the moment of contestation. While this contestation is instrumentalised by political elites for their own advantage, it also remains an important element of agency within a normative order which they had little previous control over.
