Abstract GO is of great interesting for membrane materials due to its unique properties including antimicrobial activity and antifouling property. However, the differences between GO nanosheets and layered GO membranes gained little attention. Herein, we fabricated GO membranes that have a thickness of around 30 nm and a void d-spacing of 0.67 nm (wet state) with single layer GO nanosheets of 10–75 nm in lateral size and investigated their antimicrobial and antifouling potential for practical use. It exhibits typical nanofiltration performance, with the rejections of 65.23%, 17.79%, 42.10% and 12.47% to Na 2 SO 4 , NaCl, Mg 2 SO 4 and MgCl 2 , respectively. The antimicrobial test demonstrated that GO nanosheets lose their antimicrobial activity after they stacked together. A 14-day test showing that GO membrane has excellent resistance for organic fouling, with reversible fouling of more than 98%. But when it comes to tapwater, the proportion of irreversible fouling is surging to more than fifty percent even after cleaning with 2000 mg/L of sodium hypochlorite. Thus, we suggested that there are more details should be investigated before put layered GO membrane into practical use. The desalting performance of graphene oxide (GO) membranes was further optimized using one-step carboxylation via nucleophilic substitution reactions between epoxy groups of graphene oxide (GO) and amino groups of glycine. GO and GO-COOH membranes with highly ordered structure were prepared by pressure-assisted self-assembly technique. The performance of GO and GO-COOH membranes was investigated and compared. The results showed that GO-COOH membranes exhibited not only higher permeability but also better salt rejections compared with pristine GO membranes. The surface physicochemical properties of GO-COOH membrane including negativity and hydrophilicity were improved as well. The transport mechanism revealed that the improvement of desalting properties was attributed to enhanced electrostatic repulsion by inducing effective negative charge. The higher permeability of GO-COOH membranes resulted from increased water nanochannels and improved surface hydrophilicity. This work studied the feasibility of ultrasonic-assisted (US-assisted) chemical cleaning of nanofiltration (NF) membranes that fouled with inorganic scales. We carried out US-assisted acid cleaning experiments by filter arsenic-rich brackish water to investigate the influencing conditions of US-assisted cleaning technology. We first optimized the proper ultrasonic power intensity (1 W/cm 2 ) in avoiding of membrane damage. US-assisted water flushing can recover the membrane water flux by around 75%, which suggested that the removal of inorganic scales was inadequate. However, US-assisted acid cleaning is efficient for removing the inorganic scales on membrane surface, and cleaning time was significantly shortened by 1/3 to 2/3 when compared with acid cleaning. It is worth to note that US-assisted acid cleaning can be carried out at a lower pH value of 3.0, while traditional acid cleaning usually conducted at pH of 2.0.This would reduce disposal amount of chemical contaminants by up to 90%. Additionally, our investigation suggests the optimal temperature for US-assisted acid cleaning was around 30 °C. Nanofiltration (NF) is an effective technology for fluoride rejection in drinking water which has characteristics of high water flux, high water recovery rate and low operation pressure, etc. However, high fluoride concentration severely influences the quality of its product water. Herein, nature diatomite was chosen to adsorb fluoride prior to NF process. The characterization of diatomite was investigated by SEM and XRD, and the feasibility was studied by XPS and FT–IR. The influences of diatomite dosage, pH, ionic strength and anions concentration were researched by batches of adsorption experiments. The presence of HA enhanced the adsorption of fluoride at pH < 5 while reduced fluoride adsorption at pH > 5. The adsorption process fitted the Langmuir isotherm and the adsorption kinetics fitted the pseudo-second-order rate equation. In addition, the combination of adsorption process and NF treatment was studied, which confirmed that the nature diatomite can ensure the permeate water of the NF system to meet the standard. Results of this study demonstrated that the nature diatomite was viable and effective to be used as the pretreatment adsorbent for NF system to defluorinate high fluoride water. This study explored the effect of increasing nanofiltration (NF) permeate recovery ( R NF ) by recirculation and dosage of chemicals on NF separation performance, concentration polarization ( CP ) and accumulation of scaling-prone ion concentration on NF membrane surface. The related coupling effect on seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination was also evaluated. The results show that when R NF for a single NF membrane element increased from 40% to 65%, pH of NF retentate and recycling ratio ( R r) increased from 5.02 and 0.75 to 5.10 and 3.58, respectively, with the dosage of both acid and antiscalant. In the same R NF range, the rejection of Ca 2 + , CO 3 2 − , SO 4 2 − , TDS and total hardness decreased from 35.1%, 78%, 96.3%, 18.2% and 56.1% to 28%, 76.9%, 96.1%, 10.9% and 33.9%, respectively, for NF in without chemical dosage. The CO 3 2 − and SO 4 2 − ion concentrations both in SWRO brine and on SWRO membrane surface were only around 0.12, 98, 0.12 and 99 mg·L − 1 , respectively, which were much lower than those in typical SWRO brine. Higher rejection for SO 4 2 − ion and higher selectivity of divalent ions over monovalent ions by the NF element were demonstrated in this study, which indicates that ESNA3 membrane yields a relatively higher efficiency of seawater pretreatment. Abstract: Pilot-scale experiments were carried out on a nanofiltration (NF)–seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) integrated membrane system (IMS) to evaluate scaling potential on NF and SWRO membrane surface using a kind of loosen NF membrane and costal seawater. The effect of NF permeate recovery (R NF ) increasing on the occurrence of scaling in the NF and SWRO module was investigated in term of concentration polarization modulus (CP) of scalant ions, Stiff and Davis Stability Index (S&DSI), as well as Supersaturation Index (SI) of CaCO3 and CaSO4. The results show that the salt rejection by the loosen NF module is only about 10%, while the rejection of SO4 2− is higher than 95%; S&DSI is always less than zero, indicating that CaCO3 scaling could not form on the NF membrane surface when R NF was less than 35%. is much higher than ; and at R NF of higher than 30%, SI of CaSO4 on NF membrane surface increased gradually higher than 1.0, which indicated that CaSO4 scale is more apt to form on the NF membrane surface than CaCO3 at that NF permeate recovery. For nanofiltration (NF) membranes, constructing the interlayer between the substrate and polyamide (PA) layer could balance the trade-off effect between the selectivity and permeability. However, the influencing mechanism of the interlayer to the PA layer is mostly indirect, and how to regulate the physicochemical properties of the PA layer to improve the membrane property remains to be investigated. In this study, porous Zn-TCPP nanosheets with active reaction sites were used to construct interlayer and directly participated in interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction through the edge COOH of nanosheets reacting with piperazine (PIP) to further regulate PA layer physicochemical properties. Controlling the amount of nanosheets involved in the reaction, NF membranes with striated Turing structures, higher negatively charged surface and larger effective filtration area were obtained. The NF membrane permeability with Zn-TCPP interlayer was significantly improved by 123 % while the Cl−/ SO 4 2 − selectivity was greatly enhanced to 72.69, meanwhile it showed excellent performance stability. This study presents a new perspective that the interlayer can modulate the NF membrane physicochemical properties to improve its performance by directly participating in the IP reaction. Membrane fouling is the main problem during the nanofiltration (NF) process of brackish water desalination due to the existence of natural organic matter, especially humic acid (HA). Moreover, the conventional membrane cleaning method would do great harm to the environment because large amount of chemicals were employed. In order to control organic fouling, a novel cleaning method via direct osmosis backwash (DOBW) by injecting high salinity (HS) solution was developed. Different operating conditions for HS-DOBW technology in the actual process were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that there was a strong driving force to lift and sweep the foulants from the membrane surface which would be carried over to the brine. The optimal conditions in terms of HS (150 kg/m 3 NaCl solution) flow rate of 0.121 L/min were selected for the subsequent experiments. The results showed that the fouling could be almost fully reversible (more than 99.78% permeate water flux recovery), and the membrane needed to be cleaned for about 10 min because of the appearance of HA on membrane surface at the fouling time of 24 h. Abstract: Pilot-scale tests were carried out on a nanofiltration (NF)–seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) integrated membrane system (IMS) using a kind of ultra-low pressure and high selectivity NF membrane (ESNA3, Hydranautics). Three different schemes were investigated for the NF seawater softening processes. The effect of increasing NF permeate recovery rate (R NF) on the potential of scaling in the NF and RO modules was investigated in term of concentration polarization modulus (CP) of scalant ions, Stiff and Davis Stability Index (S&DSI), and Supersaturation Index (SI) of CaCO3 and CaSO4. The results show that within the test range, high R NF, large permeate flux and low specific energy consumption (Es) could be achieved simultaneously for the loosen NF membrane. The Es for ESNA3 membrane could be lower than 0.95kWh·m−3. CP SO4 2− was larger than CP CO3 2− in the NF module under the NF retentate recycling operating conditions. The SI data indicated that at R NF of higher than 65% and with antiscalant addition and pH adjustment, CaSO4 would preferentially precipitate on NF membrane surface. However, with pH adjustment, the S&DSI values on the NF and SWRO membrane surface remained negative, which indicated that CaCO3 scaling could not form in the pilot test operating range. Abstract: An integrated membrane system (IMS) of ultrafiltration–nanofiltration (UF–NF) technology has been investigated extensively as a means of seawater softening for offshore oilfield water and polymer flooding. The results showed that the softened water generated by the selected NF membrane could meet the water flooding standard for offshore oilfield. At appropriate mixing ratio of softened water and formation water, scales may be avoided completely. Furthermore, the reservoir formation sensitivity evaluation proved the compatibility of NF permeation water with the formation core, which indicates that the permeation water of the selected NF membrane module could be safely used for offshore oilfield water flooding. The prepared aqueous polymer solution using NF softened seawater showed relatively high viscosity and stability at formation temperature for long time, which could meet the demand for offshore polymer flooding. Therefore, the UF–NF integrated membrane technology could efficiently resolve the softened water shortage problem in offshore oilfield water flooding and polymer flooding and ensure continuous and stable oil production. Abstract: An ultrafiltration–nanofiltration (UF–NF) integrated membrane system (IMS) was operated for 500h to examine the performance of the NF membrane in seawater desalination pretreatment. The rejection of divalent ions, TDS, TOC and UV254 by the NF membrane as well as the permeation flux decreased gradually with operating time before each chemical cleaning procedure, while the calculated Stiff and Davis Stability Index (S&DSI) increased gradually from negative up to positive. The result indicates that there exists inorganic fouling during the long run. However, the IMS produced excellent effluent with 93.6% removal of total organic carbon (TOC) for long-term operation. The TOC concentration of the NF permeation samples was in the range of 0.06–0.35mg/L. The chemical cleaning results indicated that inorganic fouling should be preferentially paid attention to, and a combination of citric acid cleaning and NaOH cleaning may achieve an optimal cleaning efficiency. Thin film nanocomposite (TFN) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane with improved separation performance was fabricated via interfacial polymerization reaction between amine-functionalized graphene quantum dots (af-GQDs) doped aqueous monomer solution of m -phenylenediamine (MPD) and n -hexane solution containing trimesoyl chloride (TMC) monomer. We emphasize the employment of extra-low content for both af-GQDs and MPD, so that we could maximize the function of these nanomaterials and eliminate their aggregation at the same time. The af-GQDs nanomaterials could regulate the interfacial polymerization process and could be strongly anchored in the polyamide film via covalent bonding, hence could prevent their loss while providing more channels for faster solvent penetration. As a result, the optimized OSN membrane, TFN-50, shows a super-smooth surface, with a surface roughness as low as 4.3 ± 0.2 nm, and excellent pure solvent permeances which reach 135.8, 112.7, and 69.8 L m−2 h−1 MPa−1 for methanol, DMF and ethanol, respectively, as well as a very high Rhodamine B (RDB, 479 Da) rejection of up to 99.2%, and an ethanol permeance of 61.4 L m−2 h−1 MPa−1. Furthermore, the TFN-50 OSN membrane still shows excellent filtration performance after being submerged in DMF for 336 h or continuous crossflow filtration with Rose bengal (RB, 1017 Da)/DMF solution for 136 h, demonstrating its excellent solvent resistance. The separation performance of current organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes are still not satisfied. In this work, an ultra-thin TpHz covalent organic frameworks (COFs) interlayer was in situ constructed in advance on polyimide substrate, then an ultra-thin polyamide separation layer incorporated with amino-functionalized graphene quantum dots (af-GQDs) was constructed via interfacial polymerization (IP). A high performance interlayered thin-film nanocomposite (iTFN) OSN membrane with integrally covalent bonding structure, ultra-thin and ultra-smooth surface was obtained after post crosslinking and activation. The effect of ultra-low concentrations for the polyamide reaction monomers, the COFs monomer Tp and the doped af-GQDs nanoparticle reveals that they could help to form a very thin (7–8 nm in thickness) and defect-free skin layer with very smooth surface (about 2.7 nm in roughness). The iTFN OSN membrane shows excellent solvent permeance and solute selectivity, with an ethanol permeance reaching 97.6 L m−2 h−1 MPa−1 and an RDB rejection higher than 99%. After a 180 h long-term filtration with 100 mg L−1 RB/DMF solution, it remained an RB rejection of higher than 99%, demonstrating its superior resistance to strong polar solvent. Our work paves a unique way for the fabrication of novel OSN membrane with both in situ constructed nanomaterials interlayer and nanomaterials incorporated in skin layer. A novel nanofiltration (NF) membrane is developed via polyethyleneimine (PEI) deposition on a hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (PAN) substrate enhanced by an electric field and chemical cross-linking to achieve improved desalting properties. Compared to the PEI static-deposition process, dramatic increase in salt rejection and substantial reductions of deposition time and PEI concentration are achieved for the membranes prepared by electro-deposition. What's more, the resulting membrane exhibited both stable flux and salt rejection in filtrating seawater for a relatively long term due to a significant membrane stability attributed to the electro-deposition. Desalting properties in terms of salt rejection and flux were found to be strongly affected by both hydrolysis and electro-deposition conditions. Under the optimal fabricating conditions, the resulting NF membrane exhibited a high flux of 24 L/m 2 h, excellent MgCl 2 rejection of ∼92% and low NaCl rejection of ∼39% when filtrating 2000 mg/L salt solution at 0.5 MPa. Under filtration of raw seawater at 1.8 MPa, the resulting membrane exhibited a high flux of 30.2 L/m 2 h and a significant improvement in seawater softening efficiency compared to various commercial NF membranes, which is attributed to its excellent separation efficiency between divalent and univalent ions. The current investigation demonstrated that polyelectrolyte NF membranes fabricated by electro-deposition and cross-linking led to excellent separation performance and satisfactory stability and durability that can be used in seawater softening for a relatively long time. A pilot-scale ultrafiltration (UF)–nanofiltration (NF) integrated membrane system (IMS) which included a self-cleaning crossflow UF filtration process and a dual-stage NF process with a capacity of 100 m 3 ·d − 1 NF permeation water was established for seawater softening investigation. The separation performance of the dual-stage NF process under different conditions, such as operating pressure, recovery rate, and inlet flowrate, was extensively investigated; long-term performance and energy consumption of the dual-stage NF process were analyzed as well. The results showed that during the long-term operation, UF could provide qualified filtrate for NF. The dual-stage NF process achieved high separation performance with good permeate quality, especially high rejection of Ca 2 + and Mg 2 + (> 90%). In addition, the dual-stage NF process showed good anti-fouling characteristics, with the normalized NF permeate flux maintaining at an essential constant value of about 14 L·m − 2 ·h − 1 at 3.5 MPa, and DOC rejection around 90% during the long-term experiment. Energy consumption of the dual-stage NF process increased with the increase of the operating pressure and the decrease of the raw seawater temperature, which was about 1.8 kWh·m − 3 at 3.5 MPa and 25 °C. Abstract: Dynamic layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technology was used to prepare as few as three to five bilayers of poly(diallyl-dimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) on negatively charged polysulfone (PS) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes of 50kDa MWCO and compared with those of the static assembly membranes. The prepared dynamic assembly (PDADMAC/PSS)4 nanofiltration (NF) membrane showed a permeation flux of 60Lm−2 h−1 at 1.0MPa, much higher than that of the commercial DL membrane (GE Osmonics, USA), but with a rejection of about 90% of SO4 2− which is relatively less than that of the DL membrane. The rejection performance showed that the dynamic–static assembly was more effective than others. Using dynamic–static assembly preparation, the rejection of (PDADMAC/PSS)3 membrane was about 90%, while the flux was about 55Lm−2 h−1 at 1.0MPa. The surface morphology of the prepared LBL membranes were characterized by SEM and AFM, and no defect was found. The surface morphology of the membrane prepared by dynamic–static assembly was almost the same as the commercial membranes. Abstract: Nanofiltration (NF) membranes are playing a more and more important role in brackish and seawater softening process, wastewater reclamation and other industrial separation. In this study, ultrafiltation (UF) and NF (ESNA3, Hydranautics) were assembled to an integrated membrane system (IMS) as pretreatment prior to seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) to evaluate the NF efficiency of seawater softening. The influences of NF feed property (the feed from UF1 with 100kDa MWCO and UF2 with 20kDa MWCO, respectively), operating pressure (0.5–3.0MPa), cross-flow velocity (0.028–0.048m/s) and feed temperature (5–17°C) on the softening efficiency in terms of the NF flux and ion rejection were investigated. The results showed that the high softening efficiency of NF membrane could be achieved using UF membrane with smaller MWCO (20kDa). NF system using UF2 as pretreatment process yielded a higher flux of 61.4L/(m2 h) with Ca2+, Mg2+, SO4 2− rejection of 44.37%, 73.26% and 99.82%, respectively, under the optimum operating conditions of operating pressure at 1.5MPa, cross-flow velocity at 0.035m/s and feed temperature at 12.5°C. And, the relatively excellent selectivity of divalent ions and univalent ions can be obtained by ESNA3 membrane compared to that of other NF membranes reported in the literature, indicating that the ESNA3 membrane seems to be appropriate for seawater softening process. We successfully fabricated a kind of novel sandwich-like thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) polyamide (PA) membranes via interfacial polymerization (IP) method on polyimide (PI) support surface which was modified by a layer of nanosized amine-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework - 8 (mZIF-8) nanoparticles for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN). Uniform distribution of the nanoparticles was obtained via directly immersing the PI support membrane in aqueous mZIF-8 suspension prior to the IP. A post-IP cross-linking procedure was conducted to enhance further the solvent resistance of the fabricated TFN OSN membranes. Ultra-smooth (average surface roughness of 13.7 nm) and ultra-thin (average thickness of about 33 nm) skin layer was achieved, together with high Rhodamine B (RDB, 479 Da) rejection (99.1%) and reasonable ethanol permeance (~28 L m−2 h−1 MPa−1), as well as nearly unchanged RDB rejection after being submerged in DMF at high temperature (80 °C) for 120 h, indicating their very good resistance in very harsh strong polar solvent circumstance and the promising aspect of their industrial application. • The OSN membrane was fabricated with covalent bonding between layers. • The mZIF-8 interlayer helped to form an ultra-smooth and ultra-thin skin layer. • OSN membrane permeance was effectively increased without sacrificing rejection. • The OSN membrane kept super stability in DMF at 80 °C for 120 h. Novel thin film nanocomposite (TFN) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes with sandwich-like structure were developed via interfacial polymerization (IP) using both low concentration m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC), on graphene quantum dots (GQDs)-polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified polyimide substrate surface, and followed by post-IP crosslinking and solvent activation. Such GQDs-interlayered OSN membranes have exhibited a remarkable reduced thickness (about 25 nm) and an ultra-low average surface roughness (less than 2 nm) of their IP skin layers, respectively. Both material features are rarely reported in literature. Meanwhile, our GQDs-interlayered OSN membranes have shown an increased Rhodamine B (479 Da) rejection (from 87.4% to 98.7%) and an increased ethanol permeance (from 33.5 to 40.3 L m−2 h−1 MPa−1) compared with the pristine OSN membrane. Superior solvent resistance was demonstrated after long immersion in pure N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF) at room temperature for 81 days, and at 80 °C for 45 days, and after a long-term consecutively filtration with Rose Bengal (1017 Da) DMF solution at 25 °C for 5 days, without scarifying solute rejection. Solvent resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) membranes are highly demanded in processing organic solutions especially those contain large molecules with molecular weight between 200 to 2000 Da, yet they have some drawbacks such as relatively poor solvent resistance and low solvent permeance. The current work presented an innovative class of amino-functionalized graphene quantum dots (aGQDs) embedded thin film nanocomposites (TFN) for SRNF membranes which were prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) and subsequent steps (chemical imidization, crosslinking, and solvent activation). The prepared membranes enabled covalent interactions not only between the IP skin layer and the substrate, but also between the IP layer and the embedded aGQDs. The ethanol permeance and surface porosity increased by 44% and 69%, respectively, with the embedment of aGQDs under the optimal conditions, while the Rhodamine B (RDB, 479 Da) rejection maintained essentially stable above 99%. Furthermore, our novel membranes exhibited excellent long-term stability, with a rejection of over 99% for Rose Bengal (RB, 1017 Da) during the continuous filtration of 100 mg L−1 RB/ N , N -dimethyl formamide (DMF) solution at room temperature for more than 768 h. They also exhibited good organic solvent resistance and high-temperature tolerance in both DMF and NMP solvents, with a RDB rejection of over 99% and an ethanol permeance of about 38 L m−2 h−1 MPa−1 after being immersed in DMF at 80 oC for 248 h, and a RDB rejection of over 99% and an ethanol permeance of about 41 L m−2 h−1 MPa−1 after being immersed in NMP at 80 oC for 232 h. The results demonstrated that the aGQDs-embedded TFN OSN membrane has vast potential in SRNF applications.
