Electroreduction of nitrite (NO2−) to ammonia (NH3) provides a sustainable approach to yield NH3, whilst eliminating NO2− contaminants. In this study, Ni nanoparticles strutted 3D honeycomb‐like porous carbon framework (Ni@HPCF) is fabricated as a high‐efficiency electrocatalyst for selective reduction of NO2− to NH3. In 0.1 M NaOH with NO2−, such Ni@HPCF electrode obtains a significant NH3 yield of 12.04 mg h−1 mgcat.−1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 95.1 %. Highlights: By employing side-chain regulation, the photothermal therapy response of conjugated diradical polymer can red-shift from near-infrared (NIR)-I to the NIR-II region. This strategy offers new radical materials in developing NIR-II photothermal materials. The conjugated diradical polymer TTB-2 receives a record-high photothermal conversion efficiency of 87.7%, far beyond the recently reported NIR-II photothermal agents. Such conjugated diradical polymer must enrich the NIR-II photothermal agents' library and provide important insight for more diradical polymer construction. The conjugated diradical polymer nanoparticles TTB-2 NPs achieve good tumor photoablation with navigation of photoacoustic imaging in the NIR-II window, without any side effect. Furthermore, the efficient photo-immunity effect prevents the pulmonary metastasis of breast cancer. Massive efforts have been concentrated on the advance of eminent near-infrared (NIR) photothermal materials (PTMs) in the NIR-II window (1000–1700 nm), especially organic PTMs because of their intrinsic biological safety compared with inorganic PTMs. However, so far, only a few NIR-II-responsive organic PTMs was explored, and their photothermal conversion efficiencies (PCEs) still remain relatively low. Herein, donor–acceptor conjugated diradical polymers with open-shell characteristics are explored for synergistically photothermal immunotherapy of metastatic tumors in the NIR-II window. By employing side-chain regulation, the conjugated diradical polymer TTB-2 with obvious NIR-II absorption was developed, and its nanoparticles realize a record-breaking PCE of 87.7% upon NIR-II light illustration. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that TTB-2 nanoparticles show good tumor photoablation with navigation of photoacoustic imaging in the NIR-II window, without any side-effect. Moreover, by combining with PD-1 antibody, the pulmonary metastasis of breast cancer is high-effectively prevented by the efficient photo-immunity effect. Thus, this study explores superior PTMs for cancer metastasis theranostics in the NIR-II window, offering a new horizon in developing radical-characteristic NIR-II photothermal materials. Zinc oxide has been of interest because of its efficient redox capacity in the UV spectral region. However, the high bandwidth limits its application in the visible region. Although synthesizing heterojunctions and doping with other elements have become the focus of the problem, it inevitably has an impact on the environment. In contrast, the template method is not only environmentally friendly but also can be used to increase the degradation rate by changing the nanoparticle mesoporous structure. Microporous/mesoporous zinc oxide with multi-level structure was synthesized using anhydrous ethanol as a green templating agent in a mild and energy-efficient method. The prepared nZnO was characterized using XRD, SEM, BET, and HR-TEM. XRD confirmed that the formation of hexagonal wurtzite zincite nZnO with good crystallinity. SEM results showed that the products were flower-like structures composed of nanosheets with a thickness of 20 nm and an average diameter of 400 nm. TEM and BET confirmed the presence of pits with diameters ranging from about 1 nm to 20 nm existed on the surface of the nanosheets, while the specific surface area of 28.05 m2/g and the pore volume of 0.069 cm3/g also provide advantages for nZnO as a photocatalytic material. The synthesized nZnO overcame the disadvantage of responding only in the UV region, and the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of MB reached 93.2% after 60 min of xenon lamp irradiation, and stabilized at 86.15% after five photocycling tests. Compared with other kinds of templates, anhydrous ethanol has the advantages of environmental friendliness and simple post-processing, and it also provides ideas for the synthesis of multilevel structures of other nanomaterials. The electrocatalytic sulfur reduction reaction (SRR) would allow the production of renewable high‐capacity rechargeable lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries using sustainable and nontoxic elemental sulfur as a cathode material, but its slow reaction rate causes a serious shuttle effect and dramatically reduces the capacity. We found that a catalyst composed of Pd nanoparticles supported by ordered mesoporous carbon (Pd/OMC) had a high reaction rate in the SRR, and a Li‐S battery assembled with this catalyst had a low shuttle constant of 0.031 h−1 and a high‐rate performance with a specific capacity of 1527 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C which is close to the theoretical value. The high activity of Pd/OMC with a d‐orbital vacancy of 0.87 e was predicted from a volcano relationship between the d charge for the metal and the adsorption activation entropy and reaction rate for the SRR by examining Pd, Au, Pt, Rh, and Ru transition‐metal nanocatalysts. The strategy of using a single electronic structure descriptor to design high‐efficiency SRR catalysts has suggested a way to produce practical Li‐S batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Long before we recognized how significant they were, nanoparticles were already all around in the environment. Since then, an extensive number of synthetic nanoparticles have been engineered to improve our quality of life through rigorous scientific research on their uses in practically every industry, including semiconductor devices, food, medicine, and agriculture. The extensive usage of nanoparticles in commodities that come into proximity with human skin and internal organs through medicine has raised significant concerns over the years. TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are widely employed in a wide range of industries, such as cosmetics and food packaging. The interaction and internalization of TiO2 NPs in living cells have been studied by the scientific community for many years. In the present study, we investigated the cell viability, nanomechanical characteristics, and fluorescence response of NIH-3T3 cells treated with sterile DMEM TiO2 nanoparticle solution using a liquid-mode atomic force microscope and a fluorescence microscope. Two different sorts of response systems have been observed in the cells depending on the size of the NPs. TiO2 nanoparticles smaller than 100 nm support its initial stages cell viability, and cells internalize and metabolize NPs. In contrast, bigger TiO2 NPs (> 100 nm) are not completely metabolized and cannot impair cell survival. Furthermore, bigger NPs above 100 nm could not be digested by the cells, therefore hindering cell development, whereas below 100 nm TiO2 stimulated uncontrolled cell growth akin to cancerous type cells. The cytoskeleton softens as a result of particle internalization, as seen by the nanomechanical characteristics of the nanoparticle treated cells. According to our investigations, TiO2 smaller than 100 nm facilitates unintended cancer cell proliferation, whereas larger NPs ultimately suppress cell growth. The development of high‐efficiency and good biocompatible photothermal therapy platforms is conducive to avoiding the risks of nano‐preparations in vivo. The poly‐L‐lactic acid (PLLA) indicated good biodegradability and biocompatibility. Inspired by natural melanin and the extraordinary nontoxic mussel biopolymer, polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs) with photothermal efficacy have attracted increasing attention. Herein, we performed the study of blended PDA/PLLA and coated PDA@PLLA electrospun nanofibers (ESNFs) for photothermal therapy. In photothermal experiment, the PDA@PLLA ESNF displayed higher light‐to‐heat conversion and photothermal stability than that of PDA/PLLA and PLLA ESNF. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments tested that three kinds of ESNF exhibited low toxicity and outstanding biocompatibility. Moreover, the PDA@PLLA ESNF showed better property for the cell proliferation due to the rough surface and good hydrophilicity. The in vivo photothermal potentiality of the PLLA, PDA/PLA and PDA@PLLA ESNF was evaluated in nude mice of inoculating the tumor, in which the PDA/PLA and PDA@PLLA ESNF significantly inhibited the tumor increasing compared to control group. Especially, the PDA@PLLA ESNF showed better photothermal therapy, which made the tumor irreversible ablate at local tumor tissue. Due to the strong oxidizing properties of H2O2, excessive discharge of H2O2 will cause great harm to the environment. Moreover, H2O2 is also an energetic material used as fuel, with specific attention given to its safety. Therefore, it is of great importance to explore and prepare good sensitive materials for the detection of H2O2 with a low detection limit and high selectivity. In this work, a kind of hydrogen peroxide electrochemical sensor has been fabricated. That is, polypyrrole (PPy) has been electropolymerized on the glass carbon electrode (GCE), and then Ag and Cu nanoparticles are modified together on the surface of polypyrrole by electrodeposition. SEM analysis shows that Cu and Ag nanoparticles are uniformly deposited on the surface of PPy. Electrochemical characterization results display that the sensor has a good response to H2O2 with two linear intervals. The first linear range is 0.1–1 mM (R2 = 0.9978, S = 265.06 μA/ (mM × cm2)), and the detection limit is 0.027 μM (S/N = 3). The second linear range is 1–35 mM (R2 = 0.9969, 445.78 μA/ (mM × cm2)), corresponding to 0.063 μM of detection limit (S/N = 3). The sensor reveals good reproducibility (σ = 2.104), repeatability (σ = 2.027), anti-interference, and stability. The recoveries of the electrode are 99.84–103.00% (for 0.1–1 mM of linear range) and 98.65–104.80% (for 1–35 mM linear range). Furthermore, the costs of the hydrogen peroxide electrochemical sensor proposed in this work are reduced largely by using non-precious metals without degradation of the sensing performance of H2O2. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent joint disease that affects all the tissues within the joint and currently lacks disease-modifying treatments in clinical practice. Despite the potential of rapamycin for OA disease alleviation, its clinical application is hindered by the challenge of achieving therapeutic concentrations, which necessitates multiple injections per week. To address this issue, rapamycin was loaded into poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (RNPs), which are nontoxic, have a high encapsulation efficiency and exhibit sustained release properties for OA treatment. The RNPs were found to promote chondrogenic differentiation of ATDC5 cells and prevent senescence caused by oxidative stress in primary mouse articular chondrocytes. Moreover, RNPs were capable to alleviate metabolism homeostatic imbalance of primary mouse articular chondrocytes in both monolayer and 3D cultures under inflammatory or oxidative stress. In the mouse destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) model, intra-articular injection of RNPs effectively mitigated joint cartilage destruction, osteophyte formation, chondrocytes hypertrophy, synovial inflammation, and pain. Anode materials based on the TiO2 nanoparticles of different morphologies were prepared using the hydrothermal method and characterized by various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and N2 absorption. The TiO2 nanoparticles prepared were used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), and their electrochemical properties were tested using discharging/charging measurements. The results showed that the initial morphology of the nanoparticles plays a minor role in battery performance after the first few cycles and that better capacity was achieved for TiO2 nanobelt morphology. The sharp drop in the specific capacity of LIB during their first cycles is examined by considering changes in the morphology of TiO2 particles and their porosity properties in terms of size and connectivity. Developing a nanosystem that can perform multimodal imaging-guided combination therapy is highly desirable but challenging. In this study, we introduced multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of graphene oxide-grafted hollow mesoporous organosilica loaded with the drug doxorubicin (DOX) and photosensitizers tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP). These NPs were encapsulated by thermosensitive liposomes that release their contents once the temperature exceeds a certain threshold. Metal oxide NPs grown on the graphene oxide (GO) surface served multiple roles, including enhancing photothermal efficiency, acting as contrast agents to improve magnetic resonance imaging, increasing the sensitivity and specificity of photoacoustic imaging, and catalysing hydrogen peroxide for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). When locally injected, the HMONs-rNGO@Fe3O4/MnOx@FA/DOX/TPP NPs effectively enriched in subcutaneous Hela cell tumour of mice. The photothermal/photodynamic/chemo combination therapy triggered by near-infrared (NIR) successfully suppressed the tumour without noticeable side effects. The catalysis reaction mechanism at nano/atomic scale attracted intense attention in the past decades. However, most in situ characterization technologies can only reflect the average information of catalysts, which leads to the inability to characterize the dynamic changes of single nanostructures or active sites under operando conditions, and many micro–nanoscale reaction mechanisms are still unknown. The combination of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) holder system with MEMS chips provides a solution for it, where the design and fabrication of MEMS chips are the key factors. Here, with the aid of finite element simulation, an ultra-stable heating chip was developed, which has an ultra-low thermal drift during temperature heating. Under ambient conditions within TEM, atomic resolution imaging was achieved during the heating process or at high temperature up to 1300 °C. Combined with the developed polymer membrane seal technique and nanofluidic control system, it can realize an adjustable pressure from 0.1 bar to 4 bar gas environment around the sample. Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common malignant bone tumor in adolescents, and the clinical treatment of OS mainly includes surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. However, the side effects of chemotherapy drugs are an issue that clinicians cannot ignore. Nanomedicine and drug delivery technologies play an important role in modern medicine. The development of nanomedicine has ushered in a new turning point in tumor treatment. With the emergence and development of nanoparticles, nanoparticle energy surfaces can be designed with different targeting effects. Not only that, nanoparticles have unique advantages in drug delivery. Nanoparticle delivery drugs can not only reduce the toxic side effects of chemotherapy drugs, but due to the enhanced permeability retention (EPR) properties of tumor cells, nanoparticles can survive longer in the tumor microenvironment and continuously release carriers to tumor cells. Preclinical studies have confirmed that nanoparticles can effectively delay tumor growth and improve the survival rate of OS patients. Nanoparticles have a negative effect on the preparation of Gallium Nitride (GaN) by Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD). We developed a particle tracking and particle-wall collision model coupled with the bulk gas flow solver to investigate the motion and deposition of nanoparticles in single-wafer and multi-wafer reactors. The results indicated that for the single-wafer reactor, there is no particle deposition on the reactor wall and susceptor, but there is the endless movement of some particles within the reactor, which should be avoided. For the multi-wafer reactors, some of the nanoparticles are deposited near the axis, and those whose initial position is beyond a certain position from the axis are trapped in a vortex above the receptor, resulting in more complex by-products, although no particles are trapped in endless motion. Moreover, the effects of the rotational speed of the susceptor on the deposition rate for both the single-wafer reactor and the multi-wafer reactor were also simulated and analyzed. The rapid construction of water electrolysis catalysts by a sacrificing template in an electrochemical environment is rarely a concern. Herein, using a fluorine‐rich (F‐rich) nickel fluoride (NiF2) grown on nickel foam (NF) as a sacrificial template, a highly effective alkaline catalyst is designed. In terms of in situ reassembling, the NiF2 template can be transformed into nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) in oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively, after only 100 CV cycles, on account of the rapid ion exchange of F− and OH− in an electrochemical environment. Due to the presence of nanocatalytic units, abundant lattice defects, and porous large specific surface structures caused by the reconstruction, it only takes low overpotentials of 57 mV for HER and 228 mV for OER (@10 mA cm−2), with outstanding stability up to 15 d (@100 mA cm−2). Consequently, only a low cell voltage of 1.53 V (@10 mA cm−2) is needed for overall water splitting, superior to commercial noble metal catalysts as benchmarks. Meanwhile, it can output stable current densities of 10, 100, and 500 mA cm−2 approaching 10 d under constant cell voltages of 1.55, 2.0, and 2.5 V, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RNA interference (RNAi) can mediate gene-silencing by knocking down the expression of a target gene via cellular machinery with much higher efficiency in contrast to other antisense-based approaches which represents an emerging therapeutic strategy for combating cancer. Distinct characters of nanoparticles, such as distinctive size, are fundamental for the efficient delivery of RNAi therapeutics, allowing for higher targeting and safety. In this review, we present the mechanism of RNAi and briefly describe the hurdles and concerns of RNAi as a cancer treatment approach in systemic delivery. Furthermore, the current nanovectors for effective tumor delivery of RNAi therapeutics are classified, and the characteristics of different nanocarriers are summarized.

The development of cancer nanotherapeutics has attracted great interest in the recent decade. Cancer nanotherapeutics have overcome several limitations of conventional therapies, such as nonspecific biodistribution, poor water solubility, and limited bioavailability. Nanoparticles with tuned size and surface characteristics are the key components of nanotherapeutics, and are designed to passively or actively deliver anti-cancer drugs to tumor cells. We provide an overview of nanoparticle-based drug delivery methods and cancer therapies based on tumor-targeting delivery strategies that have been developed in recent years.

Biocompatible and biodegradable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and has frequently been used to develop potential vaccine delivery systems. The immunoregulation and immunopotentiation of Chinese yam polysaccharide (CYP) have been widely demonstrated. In the current study, cell uptake mechanisms in dendritic cells (DCs) were monitored in vitro using confocal laser scanning microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and flow cytometry. To study a CYP-PLGA nanoparticle-adjuvanted delivery system, CYP and ovalbumin (OVA) were encapsulated in PLGA nanoparticles (CYPPs) to act as a vaccine, and the formulation was tested in immunized mice. The CYPPs more easily underwent uptake by DCs in vitro, and CYPP/OVA could stimulate more effective antigen-specific immune responses than any of the single-component formulations in vivo. Mice immunized using CYPP/OVA exhibited more secretion of OVA-specific IgG antibodies, better proliferation, and higher cytokine secretion by splenocytes and significant activation of CD3+CD4+ and CD3+CD8+ T cells. Overall, the CYPP/OVA formulation produced a stronger humoral and cellular immune response and a mixed Th1/Th2 immune response with a greater Th1 bias in comparison with the other formulations. In conclusion, the data demonstrate that the CYPP-adjuvanted delivery system has the potential to strengthen immune responses and lay the foundation for novel adjuvant design.

l-Carnitine, obligatory for oxidation of fatty acids, is transported into cells by the Na+-coupled transporter OCTN2 and the Na+/Cl–-coupled transporter ATB0,+. Here we investigated the potential of L-carnitine-conjugated poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (LC-PLGA NPs) to deliver chemotherapeutic drugs into cancer cells by targeting the nanoparticles to both OCTN2 and ATB0,+. The cellular uptake of LC-PLGA NPs in the breast cancer cell line MCF7 and the colon cancer cell line Caco-2 was increased compared to unmodified nanoparticles, but decreased in the absence of co-transporting ions (Na+ and/or Cl–) or in the presence of competitive substrates for the two transporters. Studies with fluorescently labeled nanoparticles showed their colocalization with both OCTN2 and ATB0,+, confirming the involvement of both transporters in the cellular uptake of LC-PLGA NPs. As the expression levels of OCTN2 and ATB0,+ are higher in colon cancer cells than in normal colon cells, LC-PLGA NPs can be used to deliver chemotherapeutic drugs selectively into cancer cells for colon cancer therapy. With 5-fluorouracil-loaded LC-PLGA NPs, we were able to demonstrate significant increases in the uptake efficiency and cytotoxicity in colon cancer cells that were positive for OCTN2 and ATB0,+. In a 3D spheroid model of tumor growth, LC-PLGA NPs showed increased uptake and enhanced antitumor efficacy. These findings indicate that dual-targeting LC-PLGA NPs to OCTN2 and ATB0,+ has great potential to deliver chemotherapeutic drugs for colon cancer therapy. Dual targeting LC-PLGA NPs to OCTN2 and ATB0,+ can selectively deliver chemotherapeutics to colon cancer cells where both transporters are overexpressed, preventing targeting to normal cells and thus avoiding off-target side effects.

Zebrafish were used as an in vivo model to evaluate the effects of PEG-b-PCL nano-micelle on cardiovascular development. The results showed that PEG-b-PCL nano-micelle caused embryo mortality as well as embryonic and larval malformations in a dose-dependent manner. To determine PEG-b-PCL nano-micelle effects on embryonic angiogenesis, a critical process in zebrafish cardiovascular development, growth of intersegmental vessels (ISVs) and caudal vessels (CVs) in flk1-GFP transgenic zebrafish embryos using fluorescent stereomicroscopy were examined. The expression of fetal liver kinase 1 (flk1), an angiogenic factor, by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and in situ whole-mount hybridization were also analyzed. PEG-b-PCL nano-micelle decreased growth of ISVs and CVs, as well as reduced flk1 expression in a concentration-dependent manner. Parallel to the inhibitory effects on angiogenesis, PEG-b-PCL nano-micelle exposure upregulated p53 pro-apoptotic pathway and induced cellular apoptosis in angiogenic regions by qPCR and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) apoptosis assay. This study further showed that inhibiting p53 activity, either by pharmacological inhibitor or RNA interference, could abrogate the apoptosis and angiogenic defects caused by PEG-b-PCL nano-micelles, indicating that PEG-b-PCL nano-micelle inhibits angiogenesis by activating p53-mediated apoptosis. This study indicates that polymeric PEG-b-PCL nano-micelle could pose potential hazards to cardiovascular development. Amorphous nanoparticles have attracted a large amount of interest due to their superior catalytic activity and unique selectivity. The Ni-B amorphous nanoparticles were synthesized from aqueous reduction of NiSO4 by sodium borohydride in microscale interface at room temperature. The size, morphology, elemental compositions, and the chemical composition on the surface of Ni-B amorphous nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). All the results showed that the synthesized particles are Ni-B amorphous nanoparticles with uniform in size distribution and having good dispersion. The mean particle diameter of Ni-B amorphous nanoparticles was around 9 nm. The present work provides an alternative synthesis route for the Ni-B amorphous nanoparticles.

Herein, we prepared cationic 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium propane/methoxypoly (ethyleneglycol) (DPP) nanoparticles to deliver doxorubicin (Dox) for intravesical therapy of bladder cancer. The DPP micelles have a mean dynamic diameter of 18.65 nm and a mean zeta potential of +19.6 mV. The DPP micelles could prolong the residence of Dox in the bladder, enhance the penetration of Dox into the bladder wall, and improve cellular uptake of Dox. The encapsulation by DPP micelles significantly improved the anticancer effect of Dox against orthotopic bladder cancer in vivo. Here, we prepared doxorubicin (Dox)- and thioridazine (Thio)-coloaded methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(L-lactic acid) (MPEG-PLA) nanoparticles (NPs) for breast cancer therapy. These NPs have an average particle size of 27 nm. The drug loading efficiencies of Thio and Dox are 4.71% and 1.98%, respectively. Compared to the treatment of Thio or Dox alone, the combination of Thio and Dox exhibited a synergistic effect in inhibiting the growth of 4T1 breast cancer cells in vitro. In addition, the Thio- and Dox-coloaded MPEG-PLA NPs could efficiently suppress the growth of breast cancer cells in vivo. This study suggests that Thio- and Dox-coloaded MPEG-PLA NPs might have potential applications in breast cancer treatment. In this work, NiCo2O4 nanoparticles with enhanced supercapacitive performance have been successfully synthesized via a facile sol-gel method and subsequent calcination in air. The morphology and composition of as-prepared samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray dif­fraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy (Raman). The electrochemical per­formances of NiCo2O4 nanoparticles as supercapacitor electrode materials were evalu­ated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD) tests in 3 mol L-1 KOH aqueous solution. The results show that as-prepared NiCo2O4 nanoparticles have diameters of about 20-30 nm with uniform distribution. There are some interspaces between nanoparticles observed, which could increase the effective contact area with the electrolyte and provide fast path for the insertion and extraction of electrolyte ions. The electrochemical tests show that the prepared NiCo2O4 nanoparticles for supercapacitors exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with high specific capacitance and good cycle stability. The specific capacitance of NiCo2O4 electrode has been found as high as 1080, 800, 651, and 574 F g-1 at current densities of 1, 4, 7, and 10 A g-1, respectively. Notably, the capacitance retention rate (compared with 1 A g-1) is up to 74.1 %, 60.3 %, and 53.1 % at current densities of 4, 7, and 10 A g-1, respectively. After 100 cycles, higher capacitance retention rate is also achieved. Therefore, the results indicate that NiCo2O4 material is the potential electrode material for supercapacitors.

RNA interference (RNAi) is a biological process through which gene expression can be inhibited by RNA molecules with high selectivity and specificity, providing a promising tool for tumor treatment. Two types of molecules are often applied to inactivate target gene expression: synthetic double stranded small interfering RNA (siRNA) and plasmid DNA encoding short hairpin RNA (shRNA). Vectors with high transfection efficiency and low toxicity are essential for the delivery of siRNA and shRNA. In this study, TDAPEI, the synthetic derivative of low-molecular-weight polyethylenimine (PEI), was cross-linked with imine bonds by the conjugation of branched PEI (1.8 kDa) and 2,5-thiophenedicarboxaldehyde (TDA). This biodegradable cationic polymer was utilized as the vector for the delivery of plasmid DNA expressing anti-VEGF-shRNA. Compared to PEI (25 kDa), TDAPEI had a better performance since experimental results suggest its higher transfection efficiency as well as lower toxicity both in cell and animal studies. TDAPEI did not stimulate innate immune response, which is a significant factor that should be considered in vector design for gene delivery. All the results suggested that TDAPEI delivering anti-VEGF-shRNA may provide a promising method for tumor treatment.

Along with the excessive use of antibiotics, the emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria has become a public health problem and a great challenge vis-à-vis the control and treatment of bacterial infections. As the natural predators of bacteria, phages have reattracted researchers’ attentions. Phage therapy is regarded as one of the most promising alternative strategies to fight pathogens in the post-antibiotic era. Recently, genetic and chemical engineering methods have been applied in phage modification. Among them, genetic engineering includes the expression of toxin proteins, modification of host recognition receptors, and interference of bacterial phage-resistant pathways. Chemical engineering, meanwhile, involves crosslinking phage coats with antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides, heavy metal ions, and photothermic matters. Those advances greatly expand the host range of phages and increase their bactericidal efficiency, which sheds light on the application of phage therapy in the control of multidrug-resistant pathogens. This review reports on engineered phages through genetic and chemical approaches. Further, we present the obstacles that this novel antimicrobial has incurred.
